Your Comprehensive Directory of Local Businesses and Services
Dear Neighbours I am starting this month’s note with an explanation. You’ll notice that the logo on the front now says Discover Chandlers Ford, rather than The Chandlers Ford Directory. We’ve been The Chandlers Ford Directory for nearly eight years, so why change now? Several reasons in fact. When we started the magazine nearly 8 years ago it truly was a directory as we had little content other than advertising. It is still very much a source of local services and trades, but has grown to include far more community, general and useful information. So it’s not really a directory in the same way as it was.

But actually more than that, behind the scenes, the business has been growing. Together with a friend and business partner we collectively have several magazines in the area (Hedge End, Southampton and the Meon Valley) and we wanted a consistent name across all the publications. One of the magazines was already called Discover and had a logo we liked. So – without too much analysis of the name – that’s what we went for. When Apple and Blackberry are names used for computers and meerkats advertise insurance, linking Discover with a community magazine seems more relevant than many brands these days.

So, this month’s edition of “Discover Chandlers Ford” (I admit, it still feels a bit odd) includes several features about RMS Titanic. In April 1912 – 100 years ago – Titanic sailed from Southampton staffed with a crew of mostly local workers. You can imagine then, what a devastating effect the events of the night of the 15th April must have had on the city and the surrounding communities.

Slow Computer? - Time for a Spring Clean We regularly get customers contacting us reporting that their PC or laptop has become very slow and almost unusable. Sometimes in desperation or on advice from a friend or even their telephone/broadband provider, they have run their system install disk and wiped the machine clean. The problem here is that whilst on occasion what is termed a format/reload is necessary in order to resolve system problems, it does wipe everything off the hard drive, including all the saved documents such as letters, photographs and programs. There are good and bad utilities available on the internet that promise to speed up your PC but
some end up causing more problems than they are worth. In 90% of the cases that come into our workshop, we are able to carry out a cleanup of the system that the ordinary Windows tools fall short of and to install inexpensive extra memory to make the computer run much faster and more efficiently. By removing memory hungry software and replacing it with leaner alternatives (often free) it is possible to ease the burden on your system even further and there are other useful tips and measures that can make a real difference to how your computer runs. So if you are frustrated with how your PC or laptop is ‘treating you’ and its future is looking window bound, just remember that from time to time we all need a bit of looking after and an energy boost! Nigel Powell is the Managing Director of Widenet Computer Services, who offer computer support to private customers as well as local businesses, either at their offices in Romsey or by visiting them onsite.

DISCOVER MONTHLY FE ATURE
Titanic: Read all About it
It is now 100 years since RMS Titanic disappeared beneath the waves of the Atlantic. Yet public fascination with the story is as strong as ever. Why should this be? Even as you flick through the pages of this magazines, that familiar image catches your eye; the stately lines of that fourfunnelled ocean liner and that single evocative word…Titanic. It’s not as if there is any shortage, unfortunately, of shipwrecks, before or after this catastrophe. Titanic was not even the ‘largest’ ship in the world really. This title had already gone to the first of her sister ships, the lesser-known Olympic, which had made its maiden voyage on 14 June 1911. Their dimensions were the same, with a length of 882 feet 9 inches and a beam of 92 feet 6 inches. But the Titanic’s displacement tonnage was the greater as a result of internal changes to the original design, so she succeeded her sister on a technicality. The third and last ship in the ‘Olympic class’, Britannic, was 21 feet longer. This ship struck a German mine in the Aegean Sea on 21st November 1916 and sank in an almost identical fashion to the Titanic, going down bow first as the forward compartments flooded. Watertight doors should have prevented this happening, but film of the wreck, shot in 2004, shows that the doors had been left wide open, probably to provide relief from the scorching heat. Britannic had been designed for
8

service in the somewhat cooler climes of the North Atlantic but had been requisitioned by the Admiralty for use as a hospital ship. At the time of the collision she was bound for the Greek island of Kea to collect 3,000 casualties so mercifully there were no passengers on board. There were, however, 30 fatalities, caused when two prematurely-launched lifeboats were sucked into the blades of a propeller. One of the survivors of the wrecked lifeboats was nurse Violet Jessop. This lady had also survived the Titanic’s sinking and been on board the Olympic when it collided with the cruiser HMS Hawke on 20 September 1911. I don’t know what became of her after the sinking of Britannic but I think if I’d had anything to do with it I would have banned her from further travel with the White Star Line. Revenge for Britannic was exacted on 18th May 1918, when Captain Hays, while commanding the first (and last remaining) of the three ships, Olympic, succeeded in ramming and sinking a U-boat, the only recorded case of a merchant ship sinking an enemy warship during World War I. In 1933 Olympic collided with the Nantucket Lightship, killing seven of the lightship’s crew; yet
DISCOVER MONTHLY FE ATURE none of these events is so indelibly written into history as the fate of RMS Titanic. No doubt the fact that the Titanic sank on her maiden voyage, coupled with the ballyhoo of that occasion, the huge loss of life and the subsequent shock waves which reverberated around the world served as a foundation for the ongoing intrigue. Another factor could be the White Star Line’s official description of the ships’ construction, which concluded ‘… practically making the vessel unsinkable.’ These five words were seized upon, edited, embellished and misquoted a thousand times after the sinking, giving the impression of it being a challenge to the Almighty; the very name of the ship an arrogant suggestion of a rival god. This angle was exploited in the James Cameron film Titanic, when Rose’s fiancee, Cal, declares “God Himself could not sink this ship”. Preoccupation with the disaster was immediate, with the first of many films portraying the catastrophic events of that night, In Nacht und Eis, being released in Germany that same year. It has also been the subject of dozens of books, articles and songs, an example of how this selfperpetuating fascination feeds upon itself to become something other than the sum of its parts, a separate entity. There is Titanic the ship – the wreck – the historical event. And there is Titanic the phenomenon. Long after the wreck is nothing more than a stain on the floor of the ocean this legend will live on, a nebulous memorial to the 1,517 men, women and children who perished in the freezing waters of the Atlantic on the 15th April 1912. But what would those victims have thought of this remembrance? Would they feel it a fitting tribute? Or do their ghosts look down with disdain, or disgust, at the morbid vultures picking over the heartbreaking remains of their lives. In conclusion it has to be said that there is no conclusion; as memories die they are replaced with memories of memories. And stories of stories. But probably not another film; how could anything follow the 1997 blockbuster? This film has grossed in excess of $2 billion, making the production cost of $200 million seem insignificant in comparison – a drop in the ocean. By Patrick Cousins
Titanic Myths
The band played until the very end This wouldn’t have been possible as the ship was listing and the band members would have been unable stay standing upright.
The Titanic was trying to set a speed record Communication was not as it is today and arrangements for the arriving passengers would have been made days or weeks in advance. If they had reached New York ahead of schedule most of them would have been left standing at the docks.
Third class passengers were locked below deck There was no attempt to keep third class passengers from getting into the lifeboats, or to divide potential survivors by class in any way. The reason relatively few ‘steerage’ passengers survived was partly due to being so far from the deck, and partly because many didn’t speak English and wouldn’t have understood the evacuation instructions.
White Star Line said Titanic was unsinkable The promotional material actually said “...as far as it is possible to do [Titanic] is designed to be unsinkable”.
The high number of casualties was due to insufficient lifeboats Whilst it’s true that there were only enough lifeboat spaces for around one third of the passengers, not all the lifeboats were launched. Panic and interference from passengers coupled with not enough skilled manpower, meant time ran out anyway and the last two lifeboats floated off the sinking ship. Indeed the first lifeboat that was launched had a capacity of 50 people but had just 12 passengers onboard.

PPI Mis-selling What is it? And how does it affect me? Payment Protection Insurance “PPI” was an insurance offered by Banks on any new loan or credit card or overdraft. The idea behind PPI was that if you couldn’t repay the loan because you became ill, had an accident preventing you from working or were made redundant the policy would continue the payments on your behalf. Because these insurance policies were so profitable the Banks effectively made them compulsory and because their loans were then effectively insured against non-payment they could lend ever more to unsuspecting customers. However, when customers needed to make a claim, the insurers who were often subsidiaries of the banks, wouldn’t honour the policies. So at their most vulnerable time consumers found

that they had bought worthless insurance policies. This has led to a public outcry and the Courts have effectively decided that almost all PPI policies were mis-sold. This means that if you have taken out a mortgage, loan, credit card or bank overdraft in the last 10 years or so then there is a fair chance that you have been mis-sold the PPI that you have been paying for and as such you are entitled to a refund of all the premiums you have paid. At Atherton Bailey we recovered almost £30,000 for one couple who were mis-sold PPI on their mortgage. We do charge a fee of 20% of everything we are able to recover but we work on a no win no fee basis so if for any reason we don’t recover anything then you have nothing to pay. So if you are or have been paying for a PPI then contact us on 023 80651441 to discuss what we can do for you.

Slugs &
Snails This is the time of year when you’re likely to start to notice the presence of slugs and snails in your garden, greenhouse, coldframe, window box....indeed just about everywhere. It never ceases to amaze me how much damage something as small as a slug can do and in such a short space of time. But then the truth of it is, there is never just one slug or one snail, you can always be sure that there will be hoards of them. I garden on clay and our soil is alkaline and so we have a plentiful supply of snails; if you garden on an acidic soil you will generally find that snails are not a problem as they need the calcium to make their shells. To say that they infuriate me would be an understatement, but the type I hate most are those small grey-black keeled slugs that do such a lot of damage to crops such as potatoes. I garden without chemicals so there is no question of using pellets, but I have tried pretty well every other trick in the book. I use the biological control nematode Phasmarhabdites hermaphrodita. Although quite expensive it works brilliantly against slugs and poses no environmental problems. If you time the applications so that the crops, flowers or other plants are protected while they are at their most vulnerable, then it shouldn’t be too much of an outlay. Slug and snail traps also work well, whether you buy your own ‘Slug Pubs’ or make them by plunging plastic beakers into the soil close to susceptible plants and then part filling them with beer. I once did a mini trial on Gardeners’ Question Time to see which beers slugs and snails liked best, and Guinness came out tops....
with alcohol-free lager proving least popular! I also find that stale milk works well and if you add a small quantity of grain or porridge oats to the liquid, the pests come in at an amazing rate. Make sure that you leave a centimetre or so of the rim of the beaker protruding above the soil level so that beneficial creatures such as ground beetles don’t fall in. If you create barriers around plants this can help, but I find it less reliable. My preferred materials are coco-shell, pine needles and crushed shells. But whatever you use do remember to put a complete circle around the base of the plant, not just a ring or the slugs may simply come up inside the ring and of course check it regularly, replenishing the material as necessary. So before they start to really get a hold, show them who is boss, and take action straight away: • Encourage wildlife such as ground beetles, birds and hedgehogs • Create barriers around particularly susceptible plants. • Buy or make slug traps. • If growing potatoes concentrate on earlies and lift these as soon as possible, and grow varieties that show some resistance to attack. • Use the biological control as a soil drench to control slugs (not snails) • Attach copper strip around the circumference of pots containing slug susceptible plants. • Go on night-time slug and snail hunts. • In late autumn collect up snails from their hibernating places.

We're Lovin' It... Is it just me who’s not really that bothered about the Olympics? It can’t just be me. There must be others. Other people who think that spending the best part of a grand (the top asking price for a ticket to the men’s 100-metre final) on precisely 9.36 seconds of entertainment is a little bit barmy; other people who are wondering what we’re going to do with all the empty stadiums; fellow Londoners, perhaps, who aren’t relishing the prospect of an extra hundred bajillion people being pumped into our famously crowded capital (trust me, I’ve been to the Jamie Oliver shop on a Saturday afternoon and that place is murder already). Admittedly it’s important that somebody enjoys all the shiny new facilities that my inflated council tax has been paying for over the last five years, but still. I know what you’re thinking - if the second round of the women’s equestrian dressage tournament doesn’t fill you with excitement, just ignore it. Let it pass you by. But I can’t, you see, because something about the whole crazy spectacle is really bugging me. The London 2012 Olympic Games are being sponsored by McDonalds. McDONALDS. Now I love a Big Mac as much as the next man, don’t get me wrong. But do I think it’s a smart idea for the world’s most high-profile sporting event to stand shoulder-toshoulder with a fast-food conglomerate? (For anybody still not quite sure, by the way, the answer is no.) I’d be genuinely intrigued to read the project folder on this one. Somebody, somewhere, came up with this notion and spent some considerable time (not to mention taxpayers’ money) making it happen. Worse, a whole host of other people on whichever board it was, chose not to stop them doing it. But come on, folks. The Olympic Games - the most ancient ritual in the sporting calendar, a towering testament to mankind’s extraordinary physical prowess - sponsored by cheeseburgers? Is there anyone else out there who thinks that’s barking mad? Curious to discover whether, in an effort to temper its bizarre championing of junk food, London 2012 is also aligning itself with one or two more wholesome brands (milk, perhaps, or at the very least Evian), I visited the

official website and nearly fell off my chair. There, sitting innocently underneath those famous golden arches, I found Coca-Cola… and Cadbury’s! Apparently not content with extolling the obvious nutritional virtue of the Chicken Legend, it seems the Olympic committee has gone the whole hog and attached itself to fizzy drinks and chocolate as well. So there you have it. The holy trinity of heart disease. Once upon a time, a story like this would have belonged in the You-Won’t-BelieveWhat-Those-Crazy-Americans-Have-DoneNow file. So are we really going to stand for this, Britain? Because if we let this one slip by unchallenged, what’s coming next? Greenpeace, sponsored by The National Rifle Association? The UK Heart & Lung Institute, brought to you today by Benson & Hedges? The Ku Klux Klan presents Children In Need? Or maybe I’m overreacting. I mean, obesity isn’t particularly a problem amongst young people today, right, so why get so worked up? So what if we’re effectively telling kids that Usain Bolt would never have got where he is today without his patented Big Mac & Fries McDiet? They’ll see through it… right? Finesse Energy, one of the first UK Government approved MCS contractors, has installed thousands of solar panels since 2008 all over the South for houses, housing associations, and industrial. Under the new tariff our installation costs are around 1/3rd less than when the scheme started in 2009 still delivering a similar rate of return in many cases. Working from home Spring is here at last, and with it comes the end of a dreadful dilemma that has been plaguing me since November – whether to turn on the central heating or not? Our new house is a dreadful wind-tunnel. An icy blast rips straight through it from the illfitting front door to the catflap in the kitchen. The dining room that serves as my office is right in the middle of the house and man! Is it cold! The fact that the ancient wooden sash windows are more gap than glass doesn’t help, but as the house is listed and in a conservation area they can’t be replaced. The central heating comes on at 6.30am, the boiler coming alive with a rattle and a roar that served the entire household as an alarm-clock until we got used to it. By 7am the house is toasty – almost too toasty, in fact. Then one by one the family emerges, blinking and bleary, breakfasts, and departs for whatever quotidian joys await. Leaving me and my dilemma. The heating is timed to go off at 9.30, and within a few moments the house has gone polar again. I could just turn it on again, but it seems wasteful to heat the whole house when I’m sitting on my tod in a single room. On the other hand I could go round turning off all the radiators in the rooms that aren’t being used, but it takes forever and anyway, I no longer particularly want to go into my teenage son’s room. I’m sure some of the old washing that’s strewn about the place is alive and could well be dangerous. Besides, then I’d have to do the same tour again and turn all the radiators on when the heating shudders back into life at 4.30. Could I be bothered? I most certainly could not! The alternative is to make do with a single bar of the ancient electric fire in the dining room. This does the job all right – on one side of me, which gets char-grilled, while the other remains deep frozen. But here’s the dilemma (and it’s one that we middle-class liberals get genuinely handwringing about, so don’t laugh): which alternative is the less destructive to Lifeboat Earth? Is it the
26

carbon-rich fumes wheezing into the atmosphere from the flue of the gas boiler, or is it whatever eco-outrages are perpetrated in order to squirt a trickle of current into the electric fire? I really don’t know, and it’s doing my head in. On a more prosaic note, I don’t know which alternative is the more expensive, either. A manlier man than me could probably read the meters and sort the data to make meaningful comparisons. But for me and the bills it’s out of sight, out of mind. There is, of course, a politically correct option, which would be to insulate the house properly. But how do you insulate a 17th-century cottage without ripping out the entire interior and, effectively, starting from scratch? Cavity wall insulation? Don’t make me laugh! The windows we’ve already dealt with. As for loft insulation – well, the loft is the attic bedroom, my son’s sinister eyrie. If you tried to clad the sloping ceiling with insulating foam and then put up the necessary plasterboard the headroom would be reduced still further and the poor boy would have to bend double to get in. And anyway, even if there are grants available towards the cost I have a feeling that persuading the landlord to make any additional investment that might be necessary would be about as easy as converting Iran to Wesleyan Methodism. So there’s only one thing for it. Before next winter comes, I’ll have to buy a jumper. by Ted Bruning

A Proverbial Life... Ne'er cast a clout till May be out I’ve come to the conclusion I’m a wimp who must always be warm, comfortable and, if possible, cosseted from the vagaries of the British weather. If there’s a nip in the air I’ll be wrapped up warmly. If it’s raining I’ll be wearing boots, raincoat and carrying an umbrella. If it’s windy I’ll be buttoned up, tucked in and firmly anchored to my clothing. Yep, I’m definitely a wimp. I never used to think I was a wimp. I was just sensible, dressed appropriately and ‘keeping out the chill’. However, a number of recent events have caused me to question this belief. Firstly, last week the sun shone briefly, weakly and without any warmth. It certainly wasn’t hot enough to discard any clothing, but that’s just what I saw in my local town. Several people (admittedly in their teens) strutting around in shorts and t-shirts. Now, from a distance they looked very nice, but up close the chattering teeth, goose bumps and mottled legs told the true story. I was so tempted to tell them to put on something warm. Not that it’s any of my business...but I am at that age when I feel I can comment on anything and everything. Secondly, whilst driving home one very wet night, I saw a large crowd of teenagers (there’s a theme developing here), absolutely soaked to the skin. All their finery dripping wet, their hair bedraggled, mud splashed up the back of bare legs and trousers trailing in the puddles. They strolled casually, heads down, shoulders hunched against the rain and sleeves pulled down over their hands – as if that would keep them dry! As it had been raining steadily all day I assume they had not simply been ‘caught out’ by the weather, but had gone out without coats or jackets. I drove past at a snail’s pace to avoid splashing
30

them further, but they were so wet already that I’m sure they wouldn’t have noticed a tidal wave engulfing them. I also resisted the urge to wind down the window, ask them where their coats were and advise them that a bin bag made a good emergency waterproof – not that they had any bin bags of course. Finally, I saw a male jogger cracking along at a great pace one very chilly morning; clutching a plastic bottle of water, headphones in ears and wearing what looked like very expensive trainers. His only other clothing was a pair of tiny black silky shorts; he was totally bare chested (I would like to say ‘topless’ but I’m not sure if this applies to males). Jogging or running would soon have anyone ‘glowing’, but this guy was positively steaming heat into the cold morning air – can’t be good for you. I mentioned him to my son who said that perhaps he was training for an Iron Man event. I didn’t even know such things existed. If he doesn’t take care he’ll soon be ‘rusty man’ with the amount of sweat he was generating. So there you have it – I’m a wimp (or I could just be getting old). I like to be dry, warm and protected from the elements. As the months pass I will gradually divest myself of layers of clothing: first the hat and scarf, then the boots and finally the coat. A good indication that summer has arrived is when I’m seen without a cardigan... but I’ll always have one close to hand. by A. O’Brien

RMS Titanic
Southampton Remembers
At 11.40pm on the 14th April 1912 RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic, near Newfoundland. At 12.20am on the 15th April the crew was given the order to send away women and children in the ship’s lifeboats. Titanic sank at 2.20am on the 15th April. Of the 1523 people who lost their lives 549 came from Southampton. The disaster, which made headlines across the world, had a devastating effect on the people of the city. 100 years after the tragic sinking of the White Star liner RMS Titanic, the city recognises our unique link to the tragedy. The disaster struck at the heart of Southampton as hundreds of city residents went down with the fated vessel. Events across the city give you the chance to connect with the voices of the past that echo through history, telling the story of that disastrous night.

TITANIC ART EXHIBITION 17 March – 29 April 2012 Southampton City Art Gallery, Civic Centre, Commercial Road, SO14 7LP Retracing the Unsinkable: The Titanic Centenary. All residents of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and Dorset were invited to submit their artwork for this 'open exhibition.' This year the theme is the Titanic. We encouraged artists of all ages working in a range of media to rise to the challenge of creating a new piece of work based on this theme. There has been a fantastic response to the invitation with over 200 entries and the successful submissions are now being exhibited at Southampton City Art Gallery from 17th March – 29th April 2012. A TITANIC DAY FOR ALL THE FAMILY 2 April at 11am and 3pm Southampton City Art Gallery, Civic Centre, SO14 7LP Free drop in session. An exciting array of activities will be on offer for all the family to commemorate the Titanic Centenary including rhymes, songs & shanties, acting & filming opportunities, competitions, creative writing and face painting. ANCESTORS LOST AT SEA 4 April 7pm - 9pm Southampton Central Library, Civic Centre, SO14 7LP The Titanic was just one of hundreds of thousands of British merchant ships that have been lost in peace and war. Was your ancestor on board one? A crew member, a passenger, maybe even the captain? Have you been trying to trace a ship that disappeared? This event will help you find out more using web sites, Southampton Library’s collection, and the resources of the National Archives. The event is Free but a ticket must be collected from the Local Studies Library from 1st February

In researching for their latest production Titanic,
the Southampton Story they were able to call on first-hand accounts from family members as well as witness accounts from the enquiries and the records of the Titanic Fund. The theatre company specialise in site specific productions about real historical incidents and Titanic, the Southampton Story is no exception, using real buildings from the period as backdrops the performance will focus on the experiences of the crew and their families from the excitement of the maiden voyage through to the aftermath of the tragedy. Their stories, taken from actual accounts, mirror the experiences of hundreds of passengers on board the liner on that frozen night. The
hand of fate or destiny. That immeasurable force which in that split second changes your life turns from magic to tragic. Are the characters really the people they seem or do they have a hidden story? Will they survive the tragedy or like more than 1500 unfortunates that night, perish? Home Office Create the Perfect
Whether you have a dedicated room, a corner of the kitchen, a converted outbuilding or are simply looking to squeeze an office in under the stairs, our expert Katherine Sorrell’s guide will help you create a work space that’s not just efficient and functional, but also inviting and comfortable.
Size matters Start by considering the size of desk you require. The bigger the better – you will never regret having plenty of space on which to spread out. Do you also need a table and chairs for meetings, or perhaps a sofa or chaise longue on which to recline and read or think? And storage is vital, whether it’s a shelf above the desk, plan chests, filing cabinets, drawers or stacking boxes. Bear in mind that some things will need to be within arm’s reach, while lessused items can be stored on high shelves or deep cupboards, not necessarily in the same room. In awkward rooms, such as lofts, understairs or other small areas, built-in storage will make the most of the space; otherwise you may consider cheaper, free-standing options. Get technical A good start is to count up your electrical appliances and ensure that you install enough plug sockets in the right places (about three inches above the work surface is good, plus some hidden lower down, too) to accommodate them all. Place electrical items together so you don’t end up with long stretches of cable between them, and clip trailing wires to backs of table legs where possible. Alternatively, going wireless eliminates some cables entirely, and gives you greater flexibility about where to site your equipment.
In this pretty home office, a wall shelf and natural, neutral storage boxes, baskets, bags and trays from The Holding Company (020 8445 2888; theholdingcompany.co.uk) provide a variety of storage for papers and other work essentials.
Light fantastic Good task and general lighting is vital to avoid eye strain when working at home. The more natural light the better – though beware glare from direct sun, and position your desk at right angles to a window if possible. For working on dim days and in the evenings, fit overhead lighting that doesn’t cast any shadows over your working area – track lighting, spots inset into the ceiling and wall lamps are all options. Desk lamps should ideally be adjustable. Alternatively, consider wiring one or two adjustable lamps into the wall above your desk. Fabulous furniture Conventional office furnishings are great for efficiency, but tend to look out of place in a home. While ensuring that your desk and chair are comfortable, seek out furnishings that suit ...Continued on page 58

your home and your personality. Plenty of chain stores and independent shops sell home office furniture at a range of prices, but you could also consider hunting around junk shops, secondhand office furniture stores and salvage yards for interesting alternatives, such as old school lockers, a trestle resting on a pair of metal filing cabinets, a distressed kitchen unit or a desktop made from blackboard. Add functional accessories that will brighten up your day, such as colourful waste bins or funky pen holders, and some finishing touches, such as plants, pictures and scented candles that will make this a space where you really want to spend time. Shared spaces If your office space is shared with your dining room, kitchen, bedroom or living room, you will probably want to conceal it as much as possible when it’s not in use. Build a large cupboard in a recess next to a chimneybreast, for example, and behind the doors you should be able to squeeze in a desk with some shelving above. In a kitchen you might consider removing a
unit. That said, think carefully about whether the room’s two purposes will conflict – if you need to work with the children running around, or when a partner wants to sleep, it’s going to be a problem. You might be better off converting the loft, or fitting an office under the stairs, on a large landing or even in the garden shed. Top: This clever extendable letter rack can either be placed on your desk or mounted on the wall. Extension magazine rack, £35.55, Red Candy (0121 2247728; redcandy.co.uk). Bottom: File away your work disks in plain and simple labelled boxes. Kassett CD boxes with lids, £2.99 each, Ikea (0845 358 3363; ikea.co.uk).

Safety Groups Say
Older Drivers Get A ‘Bad Press’ Road safety organisations have said forcing elderly drivers to retake their test when they reach a certain age is not the best way to improve road safety. There has been a recent spate of accidents involving older drivers who police have claimed were not fit to hold a licence. One accident saw a 16-yearold girl killed by an 87-yearold driver who swerved onto the pavement in Colchester, Essex crushing the girl against a wall. Police had asked the driver to give up his licence three days before the fatal crash after he was involved in a separate crash, an inquest heard. However, road safety groups have told us that they think incidents involving elderly drivers are more widely reported in the press – heightening the public’s negative perception of older drivers. “Older drivers do of course make mistakes as do all drivers, said Adrian Walsh, director of charity RoadSafe. “There is evidence to show that risk increases as drivers get older, but the type of error is quite different from young drivers – most of them are to do with errors of judgement rather than breaches of the law and most are ‘lapses’. One thing is quite clear – older drivers take less risks.”
Andrew Howard, head of road safety at The AA, agreed, adding: “It is very difficult to base decisions about older drivers on the more outrageous accidents that they have. After all we don’t base our rules on all young drivers around those who pinch cars, speed or drive stupidly to impress their friends. “By and large, most older drivers are safe drivers. Risk curves fall from teenage to late 40s and only really begin to turn up again by late 60s/ early 70s and sharply by 80s. Even then they struggle to have a risk level challenging the youngest (and fittest) drivers.” Howard added that stopping older people driving would have immense costs too – both personally and to the economy as other forms of transport would have to be funded. The Institute of Advanced Motorists said they think older drivers get an “unfair press”. “In terms of the number of crashes they have they are one of the safest groups on the road and far safer than young drivers between the ages of 17-24,” said the IAM’s Neil Greig. “When an older driver knocks down a pedestrian or drives the wrong way up a dual carriageway they get banner headlines and calls for tough
retests. The vast majority of older drivers are responsible adults who know their weaknesses and change their driving to cope with them.” The IAM wants to see voluntary assessments made widely available, such as its DriveCheck55, where drivers can refresh their skills, discuss the high risk factors and get an independent assessment without fear of losing their licence. Meanwhile, Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said there is no evidence older drivers have more accidents. “In fact their safety record is better than that of many young drivers - but their frailty means that when they are involved in collisions they are more likely to be killed or seriously injured,” he explained. “Rather than introducing compulsory retesting for older drivers, we would like to see the greater promotion of voluntary refresher courses. Insurance policies which offer discounts to older drivers who do not drive at the riskiest times – such as at night – and on the most dangerous roads would also help.”

Life Changing Life Coaching
Most people have something (or several things) in their life they’d like to change. Some feel a general dissatisfaction. Others can pinpoint specifics; work, weight, partner, image, confidence. Bizarrely, very few make changes; the majority simply accept their situation and enjoy a daily moan instead. It doesn’t need to be this way. We can’t change the past but we do have control of our future. You can choose to carry on doing the same things and let life follow the same course or you can choose to make changes to your thinking and behaviour and shape your future. There are many reasons people carry on leading lives they aren’t happy with. It’s often as simple as being so busy they’ve never taken time to stop and think about their life. Or they don’t know how or where to start turning their lives around. Or maybe they know what needs doing but need support and motivation to actually do it. Working with a life coach or an objective friend and following the principles of life coaching is an effective way to transform your life. The first step is to stop and think about how happy you are with your life. You need to know what’s going on before you can ‘fix it’. Take a moment right now and consider how happy you are. Give each area a mark out of ten, ten equals wouldn’t change a thing.

Can you imagine how you’ll feel when you’ve changed that area of your life? Isn’t that feeling worth some time and effort? Life coaching provides support, guidance and motivation to create practical achievable plans to change your life.
5 LIFE CHANGING TIPS Take time out regularly and ask yourself if you’re happy with each area of your life. Choose one thing at a time to change to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Be specific about what you want to achieve and by when. Set small achievable actions. Over time they lead to big changes. Be realistic about what you can get done each week. Set yourself up to succeed.

Charity Skydiver Calls On Thrill Seekers To Follow In His Fearless Footsteps Peter Jackson, who jumped out of an aeroplane last year in support of care charity Brendoncare, is urging other thrill-seekers and adrenaline-junkies to give it a go. He said: “Although I’ve always been vaguely terrified of flying, care for older people is something that has always been close to my heart. So when the opportunity came along to raise money for this great cause by taking part in a Skydive I jumped at the chance! I would recommend it to anyone looking for an adrenaline rush or just a unique view of the countryside.” Brendoncare, which supports older people in the south through 10 care centres and 60 friendship clubs, is organising the fundraising skydive on Sunday 27th May 2012 at Old Sarum Airfield near Salisbury. Lisa Fletcher, Brendoncare’s Community Fundraiser said: “This will be a 120 mph gravity powered exhilarating descent towards mother earth! At 5000 ft the instructor will deploy the parachute for a 5 minute canopy ride back to the landing area. If this whets your appetite and you would like to jump out of a plane whilst raising money for local older people, all you need to do is raise the minimum sponsorship fee of £400 and your jump is free. To join this exciting challenge, or for further information, please contact me on 01962 852133. Or you can book directly with Skydive South Coast on 01722 323628. Brendoncare’s mission is to care for older people with dignity and respect, providing care for life in care centres, and tackling social isolation through friendship and well-being clubs. The Cost of 'Going it Alone' A lady came to see me recently who had lost her father back at the beginning of 2008. Because she had felt the estate he left behind was quite straightforward, the lady and her brother administered the execution of their father’s Will themselves. She came to see me because she had recently learned about the provision of transfer for nil rate inheritance tax allowance from one estate to another and realised that it had never been used by her parents when her mother died ten years before her father. She subsequently worked out that if her parents had used this transfer allowance, she and her brother would have avoided paying over £10,000 of Inheritance Tax and was coming to see me to see if there was anything I could do retrospectively. Legislation dictates that in order to use the nil rate inheritance tax transfer, you have to claim the right within two years of the person’s death. Extensions for special circumstances can be granted by HM Revenue & Customs, but at their discretion. The key to this lady’s case was whether the information she had just learned was made clear or accessible to her at the time she was administering her father’s Will. HMRC confirmed that the allowance could have been transferred on the death of her second parent to the lady and her brother as beneficiaries of the estates, but reiterated that
is should have been applied for and approved within the designated timescale. However, in recent years there have been a number of changes at HMRC as there are an increasing number of cases such as these being brought to their attention. After explaining the situation in a series of correspondence, my client did receive a cheque for the money that should have been received through the nil rate transfer. I cannot stress enough how fortunate this individual was. HMRC is very clear with their deadlines and it has to be a pretty strong case for anyone to be awarded money who has not worked within these timescales. I am sure the majority of you can predict the point I am now going to make– the importance of seeking professional advice. Well, as the professional, I would say that wouldn’t I? But in all seriousness, when talking about potentially missing out on thousands of pounds that rightfully belongs to the beneficiaries of an estate, the fees of having an experience professional handle financial affairs such as these proves to be a wise investment. Whilst people may think that an estate is simple to administer, that might well be because they haven’t got the experience or specific knowledge to realise how and when unnecessary funds are being handed over in inheritance tax. There are pitfalls in going it alone, so never be afraid to ask.

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE Strange Pub Names in Southern Hampshire The Red Lion is said to be the commonest pub name in England. Hard on its heels are the Royal Oak, the White Hart and the Rose and Crown. But what of those strange pub names, some of them unique, that you encounter from time to time? We have our fair share in southern Hampshire. Bitterne and Sholing offer the Humble Plumb and the Spike Islander. My visit to the Humble Plumb in Commercial Street in Bitterne revealed a spickand-span and friendly pub but yielded no explanation for the name other than that ‘Plumb’ appears to mean plumber, as its sign suggests. In days gone by the pub was called the Commercial Inn, but when and why its name was changed seems to have become lost in the mists of time.

The Spike Islander, in Sholing, refers to an early nickname for the Sholing area, Spike Island. There are various, disputed explanations for the nickname. One refers to the spiky gorse that once covered the area; another refers to the settlements of gypsies (‘pikeys’) around Woolston, Weston and Netley; yet another suggests the name is derived from the spike shaped peninsula formed by the rivers Itchen and Hamble. No Red Lions or White Harts for the village of Horton Heath, which seems to be making a speciality of unusual names. The pub known for many years as the Rising Sun at some point became the Lapstone, possibly the only pub in England with that name. The dip in which the pub lies has long been known as Lapstone Bottom. According to my dictionaries, a lapstone is a stone held in a cobbler’s lap when beating leather to make shoes. But the pub’s sign suggests that the name refers to a tree stump on which cattle stood to drink from a stream. Only a mile or so down the road from the Lapstone is a pub called the Brigadier Gerard, once the Old New Inn. Readers of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will know that Brigadier Gerard was a comic character in a series of adventure stories. But the pub is named after the famous and much loved racehorse of the early 1970s. Brigadier Gerard won 17 of his 18 races, always ridden by Joe Mercer. The Flower Pots in Cheriton, near Alresford, is, I believe, the

only pub with that name, though there is a Flower Pot (singular) in Hounslow. The pub was once a farmhouse and home to the head gardener of nearby Avington Park. This is said to be the origin of its name. It is a very traditional and popular pub, much appreciated by those who remember what pubs used to be like and prefer them that way. No piped music or big screens here, just good beer and genuinely home-prepared food. One of the most interesting of all our local pub names is the Trusty Servant in the village of Minstead in the New Forest. Its sign depicts a composite creature with a pig’s snout, an ass’s ears, stag’s feet, what look like fire irons in his left hand, and bearing a sword and shield. The picture appears to have its origins in a painting in Winchester College, but apparently there are similar, and earlier, depictions of the same creature elsewhere in Europe. There used to be a board beneath the sign bearing this rhyme: A Trusty Servant's portrait would you see, This emblematic figure well survey. A porker's snout not nice in diet shows; A padlock shut, no secret he'll disclose; Patient the ass his master’s wrath will bear; Swiftness in errand, the stag's feet declare; Laden his left hand, apt to labour saith; The vest his neatness, open hand his faith; Girt with his sword, his shield upon his arm, Himself and master he'll protect from harm. A little explanation may help. The rhyme catalogues the virtues of the perfect servant. The pig’s snout shows that he is not a fussy eater, but willing to consume his master’s leftovers. His ass’s ears show his patience when beaten by his master, while his stag’s feet indicate how fast he will run on his master’s business. Other characteristics are mentioned in the rhyme. The prize for the most unlikely conjunction of pub name and location must surely go to the
long gone Sociable Plover pub in the Paulsgrove area of Portsmouth. The Sociable Plover is an internationally endangered wading bird of west Asia that has made only a few appearances in Britain and just one in Hampshire. In October 1986 one appeared for a few days in the Titchfield Haven area before moving on for a couple of weeks to HMS Daedalus airfield at Lee-on-Solent. What made someone decide to name a pub in Paulsgrove after this rare and handsome bird? We may never know. But you certainly couldn’t make it up. by Stephen Harvey

Easter It’s been a long road from the glory of Jesus Christ’s death resurrection – the central miracle of the Christian faith – to gorging on chocolate. And it’s a road that those of a philosophical bent might liken to the descent of Western civilisation into gluttonous consumerism. But leaving such considerations aside, how did it happen? Let’s start with the word itself, Easter. We have it on the word of the Venerable Bede, writing in the very early 8th century, that “Eostre” is derived from “Eostre-monath”, the month in which pagan Saxons celebrated the festival of the goddess Eostre. It’s a simple explanation, and one with which scholars of philology have had endless fun ever since – some even denying that there ever was a goddess Eostre and that Bede (uncharacteristically) made the whole thing up. But “eostre” is cognate with “öster”, the German for east, and is therefore associated with sunrise and hence spring, so Bede’s explanation at least has context on its side. Indeed the feast is only called “Easter” in Germanic countries: in France it’s called “Pâques”, a variation on the Jewish spring festival Pesach, and other Latin countries use names of the same derivation. Fascinating stuff, but it doesn’t get us much closer to the chocolate. And the answer is eggs. Eggs have been associated with spring since... well, since birds started laying them in spring. There are Persian wall-paintings of eggs being given as gifts from 2,500 years ago; the tradition survived the country’s conversion

to Islam and persists to this day. In Egypt, another Islamic country, there is a seasonal tradition of egg decorating of unknown antiquity; in eastern Orthodox countries they paint eggs red (for Christ’s blood) and green (for returning spring); in England and North-Western Europe there is a tradition of rolling coloured eggs down hills at Eastertime, echoing the rolling away of the stone from the Holy Sepulchre; in America the White House puts on an annual display of decorated eggs from every state of the union, and favoured children (how are they selected?) are invited to a spot of egg-rolling on the White House lawn. Egg decoration seems to have evolved into making eggs out of solid chocolate in France or Germany in the early 19th century, and the first Easter egg in England came from Cadbury’s in 1842. These eggs can hardly have been for the mass market since the chocolate of the time was very expensive and also very bitter. Finer, less harsh, and less expensive chocolate was made possible by more sophisticated processing equipment in the later 19th century, and Cadbury’s produced its first hollow egg (filled with sweets) in 1875. The first milk chocolate Easter egg followed exactly 30 years later and... well, what more do we need to know? Except that Easter eggs sell for a far higher price per gram than the slab chocolate of which they’re made, and as they’ll keep almost indefinitely any left unsold can simply go into cold store until next year – at which time next year’s prices can be charged for last year’s stock. As I said, it’s all a very long way from the Mount of Olives! Well, that’s just about it for Easter – except that I forgot Easter bunnies. Well, springtime, fertility, rabbits, breeding, etcetera... need I say more? Oh, and Easter bonnets. Sorry, no idea. By Ted Bruning

Friends of Hocombe Mead Update, Spring 2012 Now that we are well into 2012 I thought that an update might be appropriate. Last year a great deal of maintenance and conservation work was carried out on the Mead. In addition to the usual coppicing and raking of the South Meadow the one remaining area of heathland was cleared and replanted with indigenous heathers that had been raised from cuttings by John Caplen. Clearing the ground of rough grasses and bracken also stimulated the germination of heather seed that had been dormant in the soil. Some of the holly that has encroached into the woodland was also cleared and boardwalks were maintained. Notice boards and interpretation boards were repaired and/or replaced in response to damage and removal by vandals. During this year the Friends of Hocombe Mead will continue work in line with the Plan to conserve, improve and diversify the habitats in the Mead. Work will continue in coppicing, maintenance of the meadows, removal of encroaching species and maintenance of reclaimed heathland. Anyone wishing to help
with this work is welcome to come along on any second Thursday of the month to the Ashdown Road entrance at 10.00 am. Events to raise the profile of Hocombe Mead and extend the enjoyment of it have been planned for the first part of 2012. The programme of event organised so far are: Woodland Flowers – Sunday 22 April, 10.00 am at Ashdown Road entrance Hints and Tips on Photograpy of Hocombe Mead – Saturday 12 May, 10.00am Ashdown Road entrance June Event – Date and time to be Notified Story telling – July -Date and time to be notified Woodland School – Autumn – Date and time to be notified We hope that you will be able to come along to some, if not all, of the events and enjoy the inspiring habitats of Hocombe Mead. News from
Chandlers Ford and Winchester MP Steve Brine
The job of Member of Parliament requires me to be a generalist, like a GP in some respects, but in Westminster you tend to specialise and have periods when you really home in on a particular area of policy. I tend to work on health matters (especially the fight against cancer), on environmental matters and I have recently been elected to the powerful Justice Select Committee. Our job is to look very closely indeed at Ken Clarke (never a dull moment I can assure you!) and examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Ministry of Justice, Attorney General's Office and Crown Prosecution Service among others. I was really pleased to join the committee, which is currently looking at the way Freedom of Information legislation is working and how Youth Justice is administered in England. I am personally very interested in the whole agenda around prison reform, reducing re-offending rates and crime diversion so hope to use my new position to promote those causes within Parliament. If you have thoughts on any of these issues I would be especially pleased to hear from you. Following a moving visit to my surgery recently I am also working with the campaigning website MumsNet on a new campaign to improve the care given to couples who experience miscarriage. I am sure many readers of this column will have some experience of miscarriage or know people who have because it is much more common than we might think. See www. stevebrine.com/miscarriagecare. Since I last wrote for the Chandlers Ford Directory I have also attended a very special service at St Paul’s Cathedral in London for the consecration of the new Bishop of Winchester, delivered the annual MPs breakfast briefing to our local business community and
spoken about against the latest attack on Christianity as a result of the court ruling that bans prayers before council meetings in this country. I’ve spoken in the House of Commons on removing illegal workers, the new diversity on our High Street when it comes to lending money to small business and the future of (truly) local television in this country. I also welcomed the Health Secretary to our constituency to show him the acute stroke service we are lucky enough to have at the RHCH and which is one of the leading centres of its kind in the South of England. You can see a short film from the visit via my website. If you would like to get in touch on any issue you feel strongly about or need my help, please don't hesitate to get in touch via steve.brine.mp@ parliament.uk. There is also a huge amount of information about my work locally and in Westminster at www. stevebrine.com and remember my regular surgery held at the Dovetail Centre in Winchester Road. If you live in the area and would like an appointment please do contact me. by Steve Brine MP

Eastleigh & Chandlers Ford Probus Club The Probus Organisation The concept of Probus was born in the United Kingdom and has grown to be a huge success and has spread all over the world. Currently there are approximately 186,000 Probus Members in the United Kingdom and many others around the world. The word Probus is an abbreviation of the words PROfessional and BUSiness. However, membership is not restricted to these two groups: it embraces those who held a position of responsibility during their working lives. Probus clubs provide a support network for active retirees to attend regular meetings with people who enjoy the camaraderie that belonging to an autonomous membership club brings. During retirement it is important that membership of any organisation should be fun and be something to look forward to participating in, and we can ensure that Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford Probus Club which was inaugurated in 1975 fulfils these criteria. Many clubs have extensive networking
Improvements to travelling by train from Chandlers Ford Using the train from Chandlers Ford station has now become even more comfortable thanks to the opening of a new refreshments stall. Staffed by volunteers of the “not for profit” Three Rivers Community Rail Partnership in the station’s waiting room, drinks and snacks are now available every weekday morning between 0645 and 1015 to help provide a refreshing start to your journey. But it’s not just limited to train travellers as anyone can call in. All proceeds are paid into the Partnership to
and social programmes, which include group trips, holidays, and involvement in community projects. We are one of three clubs that meet in Chandlers Ford. The Story of the ‘Probus’ ‘P’ Right from the onset and the original concept for a lapel badge, it became obvious that the “simpler the better” principle would apply. It should be small, attractive, dignified and instantly recognisable. It was decided early on that the logo had to be based around a ‘P’ in a circle. ‘P’ for Probus encompassed by a circle, representing the circle of friends and companions gathered together as a club. The Eastleigh & Chandlers Ford Probus Club meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 12.30pm at the Kings Court Centre, 81 Winchester Road in Chandlers Ford. We have an excellent meal and a speaker. The Ladies are invited to join us at the August and December meetings. In addition we normally meet with the Ladies on the 4th Thursday of each month at the same location for a coffee morning. The main committee structure of The Eastleigh & Chandlers Ford Probus Club is the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Speaker Secretary, Social Secretary and Welfare Officer. help provide plants and flowers around the station, buy equipment to clear and maintain the disused platform, and generally support and publicise the work of the organisation. If you also have 4 hours a week to spare, the Partnership is looking for additional volunteers to join the staffing rota, as we are already considering extending opening hours. Whether you are a train user or not, we would welcome your feedback and ideas about how to develop this initiative. Visit us at the station for a chat or contact us through our website www.threeriversrail.com, which also gives further information about train times and Partnership events and news. Freecycle®
Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ EastleighFreecycle/messages

Agreement to go ahead with arrangements to replace Eastleigh's Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) with a new facility in a new location, has been agreed subject to a planning consent. Hampshire County has been working with Eastleigh Borough Council on plans to build a new Household Waste Recycling Centry at Stoney Croft Rise, off Chestnut Avenue in Eastleigh (near the BMW garage). This would replace the existing facility located at Woodside Avenue. The split level arrangement planned for the proposed new HWRC would make it easier for local residents to deposit their household waste and recyclables. Instead of having to walk up steps to deposit waste into the container bins, residents will be able to deposit their recycled waste into the bins from upper level walkways in between. In all, it is proposed that there will be seven double bin bays, as well as additional storage for other types of waste. Another benefit of the split level layout is that full waste containers can be removed and replaced without having to temporarily close the public area (as is the case at the current site), because servicing vehicles can reach the containers directly from the lower level, without disruption, reducing congestion and ensuring that the HWRC can remain open for residents. The design for the new HWRC includes providing a new access road with an on-site vehicle lane to enable vehicles to queue off the highway reducing congestion to the local road network and car parking including provision for disabled residents. Subject to satisfactory agreement of terms between both councils, the granting of planning permission and an Environmental Permit, building of a new, split-level HWRC could begin in 2013 Set to cost in the region of £1 million, construction would be funded by Eastleigh Borough Council who, in turn, would become the land owners of the site on which the current facility is located.
