Dear Neighbours You should be receiving this month’s magazine during the Jubilee weekend. This is the second year we’ve had an extended bank holiday, with the Royal Wedding last year and I remember from then what a wonderful sense of community spirit and optimism it brings to us all. With the news full of gloom, a few days enjoying life’s simple pleasures is a relief. On page 10 you’ll see that I’ve put details of a special Jubilee event taking place in Southampton on Tuesday 5th. It’s expected to be the biggest celebration outside of London and one that we are definitely planning to go along to. In fact June and July are two of the busiest months for special events and fairs and our usual “what’s on” section towards the back of the magazine lists many of these. I was doing some research this month for July and August’s magazine and was planning to mention the big sporting event taking place in London. Do I mean ‘The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games’? Yes I do, but one is only allowed to mention the event in print a) provided you use the right words b) as long as you don’t in any way associate yourself with it and c) provided you don’t use the logo, the rings or any of the other trademarked symbols. The best I could find was some advice that said including a mention in editorial ‘should’ be acceptable. With such a minefield, it becomes easier not to mention it at all. So enjoy ‘the 2012 games’ (another approved phrasing) on the television or in the press with their huge legal departments, because when it comes to publicising it here, I’m going to run a mile (groan, forgive the pun!). Till next time. Tania

DISCOVER HERITAGE

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE The Supercar Made in Eastleigh ‘Supercar’ and ‘Eastleigh’ are words that don’t naturally seem to belong in the same sentence. The Lord Nelson class locomotives made in Eastleigh – of course. The supercar made in Maranello – indeed. But supercar and Eastleigh? Some mistake surely? No, no mistake. In 1960 John Gordon and Jim Keeble showed a prototype called the Gordon GT at that year’s Geneva Motor Show. Reviewing the prototype in October 1960, Autocar

magazine wrote, “This journal looks back on the most electrifying vehicle that it has ever tested.” But it would be another three years before their masterpiece came into production in a hangar at Eastleigh airport. Three years of struggling with all the difficulties that can beset a small team trying to produce an enormously ambitious new car on a miniscule budget. Their car, renamed the Gordon-Keeble, was heralded by a full-page advertisement in the 13

March 1964 issue of Autocar magazine. The advertisement took the form of a questionnaire. Some of the questions posed by the advert were: Do you like driving really fast? Do you like to have a car which all eyes admire? Do you like, on occasion, to amble along any old how in top gear? Do you like, on occasion, to make full use of a superb four-speed gearbox and go like a scalded cat? And Can you beg, borrow or steal £2,800? The car was a full four-seater with a decent sized boot. It

was powered by a 5.4-litre V8 engine, the one used in the Chevrolet Corvette, mounted in a space-frame chassis, and clothed in a stunningly beautiful fibreglass body. The body design was the work of a new recruit to Bertone’s famous automotive styling studio in Turin, a young lad called Giorgetto Giugiaro. Car enthusiasts will have heard of him! It was only his second design assignment for Bertone. Half a century later, the young Giugiaro’s design still looks simply stunning and attracts admiration wherever the car is seen. As well as looking great, the car’s performance was electrifying (0-60 in about 6 seconds) and it handled well. The first production car was assembled in late 1963 and shown to the press at London’s Savoy hotel in December of that year. It was now called the GordonKeeble GK1. Every production car was tested by engineer Jim Keeble himself on a circuit of Hampshire roads that included Winchester, Sutton Scotney and the old Winchester by-pass. In his invaluable history of the GordonKeeble, author Charles

8

Giles tells us that “any car which would not exceed an indicated 140 mph would be rejected and returned to the factory for further attention.” In an attempt to undercut better known makes, the car was initially priced at £2,798, a figure that Jim Keeble always thought was too low. The price was later increased to £3,626-11s-3d, but it was still too low, and the company was soon in trouble financially. Component supply problems followed and the company went into receivership in 1965. The GordonKeeble’s emblem is a tortoise, which has always prompted curiosity. The accepted explanation is that during a publicity photo shoot a tortoise walked across in front of the car. Someone picked the creature up and

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

placed it on the bonnet of the car, whereupon the tortoise urinated, stripping some of the paintwork. The owners must have felt the incident to be an omen. In July 2010, I went to Eastleigh’s central recreation ground to see a group of Gordon-Keeble cars parade at the end of a 100-mile rally run by the Gordon-Keeble Owners’ Club. The event was part of a celebration of 100 years flying from Eastleigh airport, where the cars were assembled. Of the 100 cars produced, about 90 still survive, largely thanks to that rust-free fibreglass body. They still look fabulous. Most, of course, are in expensively exquisite condition. But it is not a car for today’s petrol prices. The Autocar road test returned a figure of 14.5 mpg overall. Those wonderful Lord Nelson class locomotives may yet enjoy a Second Coming. by Stephen Harvey

DIAMOND JUBILEE TRIBUTE 5 June, Southampton

The world-famous Red Arrows will be an extra highlight of the Cunard's Three Queens Diamond Jubilee Event in Southampton on the 5th June. In what is expected to be the biggest celebration outside London all three ships of the Cunard fleet will sail up the Solent in formation for the first time on the morning, in preparation for a day of special tributes, celebrations and displays. The aerial display team’s focus will be above the Marchwood area of the docks. The display will begin around 6pm and is expected to last almost 25 minutes. The combined sight of Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria together with a seven-aircraft Red Arrows squadron will create both an outstanding spectator experience and a fitting commemoration of Her Majesty’s 60 year reign. The ships will approach the port soon after first light on Tuesday 5 June, sailing in single file up the Solent, with a flotilla of small boats expected to

10

welcome them in. As Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria tie up at their berths, Queen Mary 2 will follow on, turning in the upper swinging ground and then passing each ship in turn, with crew lining the foredeck of all three vessels, and the ships’ whistles sounding in salute of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. After the Red Arrows display, as darkness falls, the celebrations will culminate in an evening spectacular where all three ships will be brought within close proximity of each other, and a fusillade of fireworks and special effects will light up the evening sky beyond them. Queen Mary 2 will then lead Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth in single file down the Solent as all three ships set out on

their celebratory Diamond Jubilee voyages. Mayflower Park will provide the best vantage point for those interested in seeing the arrival of the fleet, the fireworks, and the departure of Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. For the Red Arrows display, Hythe Marina and Town Quay will also offer good viewing. Please note there will be no public parking in Mayflower Park on Tuesday 5 June, please use city centre car parks or public transport. Queries can be sent to: events@southampton.gov.uk

D-Day Commemorate or Celebrate?

Wednesday 6th June is the 68th anniversary of D-Day, which means very few of the 350,000 Allied soldiers and sailors (and I don’t know how many airmen) who took part are still with us to commemorate one of the most momentous battles of World War II. D-Day, it seems, hasn’t been celebrated as it should. The focus of Britain’s military commemoration has always been Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, when we mourn the dead of both world wars, as we should. But D-Day was a different battle and should be marked in a different way. The courage of the 200,000 naval and 160,000 army personnel who set out for Normandy on that stormy Tuesday is worth celebrating for itself. They faced 59 German divisions, approaching 700,000 men, who had spent four years digging themselves in and converting every beach on the French seaboard into a death-trap of landmines, barbed wire, tank traps, machine guns and artillery. To the soldiers, Operation Neptune must have seemed like an enormous gamble on their life. Of course, the odds weren’t as long as seemed. Those 59 German divisions were scattered over France, Belgium, and the Netherlands and the prolonged bombing of their communication lines made rallying quickly impossible. German high command was expecting an invasion to be launched in the obvious place, the Pas de Calais. A huge army remained there long after it was clear that the Normandy landings were no mere diversion. Many of the thin cordons of troops along the Norman coast were conscripted Poles and Russians, never trusted by the Germans (rightly, as most of them deserted quickly and many Poles turned up at Arnhem on the Allied side). The German forces had been rendered negligible by a long campaign of attrition and thanks to Hitler’s paranoia and indecision, command of the ground forces was divided and virtually paralysed. For their part, the Allied commanders enjoyed

Normandy Invasion, June 1944 A convoy of Landing Craft Infantry (Large) sails across the English Channel toward the Normandy Invasion beaches on “D-Day”, 6 June 1944. Each of these landing craft is towing a barrage balloon for protection against low-flying German aircraft.

overwhelming air and naval superiority. They had gained valuable experience of amphibious operations in North Africa and Italy, and had dedicated two years to planning and reconnaissance. They had the attacker’s advantage, concentrating their armies, while forcing the defenders to disperse theirs. Eisenhower, Montgomery and the rest had good reason to feel nervous, but confident. It can’t have seemed like that to the men in the landing craft, though. Their prospects of victory as an army might have been better than fair, but so were their personal prospects of injury or death. In the event, the mainly British, American, and Canadian invaders fared surprisingly well. The next two months were an arduous slogging match, but “only” 4,400 Allied lives were claimed out of 150,000 – 4,400 too many, but at 3%, rather better than the Somme. Indeed to a soldier of the Red Army, with memories of Stalingrad and Kharkov (the largest tank-battle in history), D-Day must have seemed not much more than a skirmish. But D-Day is important for more than just its scale and what it achieved towards the downfall of Nazi Germany. D-Day should stand as a beacon for democracy against totalitarianism. Totalitarian regimes may appear strong, but they are hollow. Willing confederations of free men and women uniting their energy, intelligence and courage towards a common goal are always stronger than a people that only obey orders. Tuesday 6th June 1944 proved that, and we should celebrate the day not with the wreaths and silences of Remembrance Sunday but with fireworks and a joyous chorale. We could call it Democracy Day. by Ted Bruning

Beach Uncool After a recent tour of Cape Town with The Lightyears, I stepped off the plane into the freezing London air with my drummer at my side. ‘I’m not sure I can get used to this weather again,’ said Tony, zipping up his jacket. ‘I don’t mind it myself,’ I replied. ‘I quite like the weather in Britain.’ Tony dropped his bag on the tarmac and gawped at me. ‘You like our weather?’ he croaked at me. I scratched my head. ‘Um… yeah. Is that… okay?’ ‘No, it is not okay!’ he retorted, looking almost hurt. ‘It’s un-British, mate.’ There I was, displaying heartfelt pride in my good old Blighty, and I was shot down for being unpatriotic. But I can’t blame Tony, because you lot all feel the same way, don’t you? For you - the people of the United Kingdom - complaining about the drizzle is an obligatory national pastime, whereas expressing any kind of affection for the British climate is tantamount to punching the Queen. But consider this. As a nation, Britons simply look better in the winter. Wrapped up in our high-collared coats and flowing scarves, we’re striking, almost continental. But strip us bare and stick us in a pair of Speedos and we just look creepy. In South Africa, the climate and the food and the lifestyle have gifted the locals fit, lean, lusty bodies - bodies that actually look good on the beach. I, on the other hand, can tell you with near-on scientific accuracy that I look at least a thousand times better in a long winter coat than I do in swimming trunks. This is because I am hopelessly Beach Uncool - and if you’re reading this and you’re British then, I’m sorry, unless you’re one of those tedious people who use ‘benchpress’ as a verb and don’t eat any carbohydrates (or you’re a liar), you are too. For those unfamiliar with the concept of Beach Uncool, allow me to furnish you with an anecdote. A very good (English) friend of mine recently married a strapping Capetonian rugby player, and during the early stages of their courtship I happened to accompany them on a family trip to the beach. After a few hours the washboard-stomached boyfriend announced that he was hungry, and suggested picking up some fresh

baguettes from the nearby kiosk. His new girlfriend’s mother, however, had other ideas. ‘No need to spend all that money,’ she replied gleefully, ‘I’ve brought a picnic!’. He then watched with a combination of terror and confusion as his future mother-in-law produced a bright orange cool bag, reached inside and pulled out a flask of lemon squash and a tin-foil pouch filled with cold mackerel wraps. Mackerel. Wraps. I should add, of course, that there is no shame in being Beach Uncool. It doesn’t mean you have to stay away from the coast altogether, but if you want to look good while doing it, go in the winter. That’s when the Brits look good on a beach. When we’re windswept, rosy-cheeked, and preferably accompanied by a dog. An imposing mist cloaking the horizon, flecks of salty sea spray clinging to our skin, trussed up in thick scarves and chunky knitwear. That’s the look for us. Not pink as a packet of cheap ham, knobbly-kneed and trying to figure out how all that sand got into our pants and eating mackerel wraps. That’s not cool, and it never will be. One other thing. Whilst we’re on the subject of being un-British, I really think that, as a national dish, fish and chips is massively overrated. Don’t tell anyone though. I’ll be deported. No smudges, chips or drying time – just fabulous nails. If you’ve ever had a manicure or pedicure you will know that although the results look great, the drying time is a real pain. Hobbling around barefoot or being unable to use your hands for a half a day is really inconvenient, and it’s just so easy to catch a nail and find that the perfect finish is ruined. However there are two fantastic products available give you all the benefits with none of drawbacks. Firstly, produced by Creative Nail Design, Shellac is a revolutionary product which applies like polish, wears flawlessly for 14 days of high gloss shine, and is removed in minutes. Shellac paints on like polish and each coat is cured in a UV light so there is zero drying time.

Imagine being able to slip on your shoes or boots straight after your pedicure, or coming home from your two weeks in the sun with the same immaculate manicure that you started with. The second option is Minx™ nail veneers which are saucy, fashionable, dramatic nail coatings, popular with celebrities, designers and models worldwide, yet affordable for all. With a cool, huge range of designs to choose from, your fingers and toes will truly stand out from the crowd. Whether you have natural or enhanced nails, Minx will extend fashion to the very ends of your fingertips! Both Shellac and Minx are available at Mystique Beauty – visit the website for details or call Louise.

'It's Good to Talk' - The Role of Mediation Under legislation that was brought into force last year, the vast majority of married couples who wish to end their relationships and begin divorce proceedings will have to go through a process of ‘Mediation’. Over the past twelve months, a number of people who have come to see me have either been unaware of the term or unsure of what it means, so let me explain. Mediation is a private and confidential dispute resolution process in which an independent, neutral person, the ‘mediator’, is appointed to support both parties in reaching an amicable settlement before there is a need to spend further time and often a great deal of money in Court. It is a process which, rather than looking back into the history of their relationship, is focused on each individual and their futures without ignoring the emotion and pain of separation. Mediation provides the forum to calmly explore the motivations and agendas of parties in order to potentially open up a whole range of solutions that can satisfy both individuals and reach a mutually acceptable, lasting agreement for the future. Through mediation, a dialogue can usually be established that enables couples to work together. It can offer not only critical examination of issues but also creative solutions beyond the powers and remit of the judicial process in Court. At the core of mediation is the concept of confidentiality. Mediation involves not only joint meetings attended by the mediator and both parties, but also private meetings between the

mediator and the individual parties alone. This can usually help avoid the raw emotion that is inevitable in a lot of initial face-to-face meetings. What is discussed in those meetings remains entirely confidential, although the financial aspects can be disclosed. There are great benefits to the process of talking things through in private in order to find ways of moving forward, especially if there are children involved, and Mediation is an ideal mechanism for dealing with disagreements as well as being an aid to the negotiation process. Each individual should ideally be accompanied by a solicitor to advise, support and help them ensure that, amongst all the discussions and potential emotions, whatever proposed settlements or solutions are put forward are both fair and serve the interests of both parties. Since last April, anyone contemplating court proceedings must attend a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) to have the process and options explained to them. If they do not, a judge may refer the proceedings to mediation at a later date. Some mediators offer a free initial meeting, so it is always worthwhile making enquiries. Mediation is definitely here to stay and I believe it is my job and that of my colleagues in the legal profession to make sure people fully understand this worthwhile process.

News from

Chandlers Ford and Winchester MP Steve Brine

From the weather to the Budget it has been an eventful 2012 so far and the life of an MP is never without great interest or even greater challenge. Since my last column I have tackled the sensitive subject of assisted suicide and spoke in a moving debate in the House of Commons. I would like to thank the many local residents from Chandler’s Ford who wrote to me in advance of that debate. In the end, we agreed unanimously to the motion which supported the Director of Public Prosecutions policy in this area and called for greater access to high quality palliative care. You can see what I said exactly via www.stevebrine.com/assistedsuicide. As the new parliamentary session is now underway following the Queen’s Speech (I still take a moment to pinch myself when sitting on the green benches and Black Rod knocks on the Commons door!) we will I suspect have big arguments ahead over sentencing reform, gay ‘marriage’, the implementation of the coalition’s welfare reforms and controversial proposals to increase the government’s ability to monitor email, web and social media traffic. On this final point, I have to admit my initial reaction when I heard about this was abject horror. It is vital that the police and security services are able to obtain the very latest communications data in certain circumstances to investigate serious crime and terrorism and to protect the public but I am also clear I entered politics to protect the public from an overbearing state and was very clear before entering Parliament in 2010 that I am on the side of evidence-based policy making that protects our country from external (and sadly internal) threats while having the utmost regard for an individual’s privacy. Since my last column I have brought the Prisons Minister to HMP Winchester and the Education Secretary (Michael Gove) to Peter Symonds to hear about their remarkable success again this year in getting local students into Oxbridge and the impressive results the college continues to score in maths tuition. I also brought the Schools Minister to Thornden School recently to catch-up on progress now it has Academy Status. As ever, Thornden did itself proud and we both thoroughly enjoyed our session with the team producing the 2012 Year Book – if only they had done that at my school!

Schools minister Nick Gibb visits Thornden School. And I continue plugging away through my work with parish councils, Ministers and the Highways Agency about the longterm future of the surface on our stretch of the M3 and what, in this extremely tight financial climate, we can possibly do to alleviate the blight I am well aware it causes many of you, especially in Scantabout. I don’t believe in making silly promises I know I can’t keep, and there is no good news imminent so far as I can ascertain, so I won’t mislead you but I can say I will never give up on this one. Finally for now, my constituents will be aware that I shared many of their concerns about the first draft of the National Planning Policy Framework and its ‘presumption in favour of sustainable development’. I had a huge amount of correspondence on the issue and shared all of it with the Minister as well as met with him and his team to make positive suggestions. The final document is much improved and I note the CPRE have since expressed support for the revised policy. You can find out all about this, see what I said in the House of Commons initially and upon publication of the final NPPF via www. stevebrine.com/nppf. If you would like to get in touch on any issue you feel strongly about or need my help, please don't hesitate to get in touch via steve.brine.mp@parliament.uk. There is also a huge amount of information about my work locally at www.stevebrine.com. And remember, I continue to hold a regular surgery in Chandler’s Ford at the Dovetail Centre on Winchester Road. Do get in touch if you need to see me. by Steve Brine MP

A Proverbial Life... Pride goes before a fall In this house the easiest way to put a smile on anyone’s face is to bake a cake. I love to cook, to bake and to feed people; just as well really considering the size of my family. With this passion for baking comes a sort of smug pride in my abilities. I know I can bake, I know it will be good, I know that it will attract compliments – in fact, I expect it. There I’ve admitted it: I take pride in my ability to whip up cakes, biscuits, buns and bread. I love producing baked delights for family and friends, basking in the resulting compliments. However, my reign as Queen Baking Bee may be coming to an end. A recent family gathering required a group effort to produce an affordable celebration buffet. The menu was compiled; various members allocated assorted dishes to prepare and tasks to perform. The celebration cake was, of course, my responsibility. I spurned offers of help, rejected suggested ‘easy recipes’ and began - in my mind at least - to elevate my status to that of Master Baker. My darling, adored daughter in-law suggested that she could make a sponge based cake for the children. In my capacity as Master Baker I provided her with a simple recipe and suggestions for ‘jazzing’ it up to make it more attractive. I was confident in her ability to make a decent job of it

and, after all, it was ‘only’ for the children. I made a start on my own contribution the following week, the base of which was a large, rich, fruit cake needing several weeks to mature before decoration. An afternoon was spent carefully weighing a huge range of expensive dried fruits, nuts, exotic sugars, spices and butter. The cake tin was carefully buttered and oh so carefully lined with baking parchment. A cuff of double thickness brown paper was prepared for tying round the tin, warding off any possibility of burning during the long, slow bake. For goodness sake, this cake even had a ‘hat’ of tin foil to prevent it getting too brown on top. I was taking no chances on this one. Finally, everything had been beaten into a delicious, fragrant mass ready for baking. It looked a little dry, but then again it did have a huge amount of dried fruits and nuts in it. I tipped it into the tin, carefully smoothed the top and placed it in the oven. Five minutes later I noticed them: six eggs that should have been in the cake... sitting happily in their box on the worktop. After a moment of sheer panic I made an executive decision: I whipped the uncooked cake from the oven, tipped everything into the mixer, added the eggs, buttered and relined the tin and put the whole lot back in the oven – it

might just work. Four hours later I removed the cake from the oven and it looks fine. I say ‘looks fine’ as I can’t cut it open to see inside; goodness knows what’s going on ‘in there’, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will all be ok. Fruit cakes are more forgiving than a sponge based mixture – aren’t they? Later that week my daughter in law emailed a photograph. She’d decided to do a practice run on her cake, but instead of doing just the one sponge she’d baked several. They’d been stacked, trimmed, filled with buttercream, covered in different coloured fondant icings and decorated with fondant shapes, toys and patterns. It looked fantastic. ‘I’ve gone a bit mad as it was for the children,’ she said, ‘what do you think?’ As I said earlier, I think my reign as Queen Baking Bee may be coming to an end. by A. O’Brien

Working from home II used to think that when the kids left school they’d be self-sufficient grownups and I wouldn’t have to worry about them anymore. Hah! Let me tell you about my mornings. Three days a week my son, who is 19, goes to college less than 20 miles away. But the free bus winds around every village and takes an hour and a half. He has to catch it at 7.30, which means leaving the house at 7.25. Now if that was me I’d be up at 6.30 to give myself plenty of time for breakfast and a shower. But not my son. In his opinion, breakfast and a shower are for wusses and he can put off leaving bed until 7.20. Which is all well and good, if he can make it. But for a teenager, waking up is hard to do. So he sets his alarm to go off three times at five-minute intervals between 6.40 and 6.55. And if the first blast isn’t enough to drag him back from dreamland, it certainly does the trick for me. I’m wide awake, waiting for the second blast and the third. The wait between blasts is bad enough, but what comes next is worse. He inhabits the attic; the parental bedroom is directly underneath. I can hear everything. Or rather, I can’t hear anything. I can’t hear him heave himself

38

reluctantly out of bed. I can’t hear him stumbling around looking for something clean to wear among the piles of dirty clothes. I can’t hear him trudge down the attic stairs to the bathroom. I can’t hear the bathroom door open and close and the bolt slam home. I’m on a knife-edge. Is he going to make it or isn’t he? If he misses the free college bus he’ll have to take two ordinary buses, pay more than £5, and be late. Eventually I can’t bear it any more. I don’t actually have to get up – my office is all of three paces from the foot of our stairs; but I can’t stick it out. I rap tentatively on his door. Only now he’s 19 and a man I can’t bawl him out for the lazy idle git that he is. Instead, I have to say something neutral like: “Everything under control up there?” I still receive the same old teenage mouthful back, though. Now I know perfectly well that I should let him stew. If he can’t get up in time for the free bus, then let him pay. He’s a grown man now and ought to take the consequences of his own actions, or rather, inactions. He’ll never learn otherwise. But it’s easier said than done. I challenge any parent not to look at that great hulking thing looming in the

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

doorway and not see an image of their little boy aged four. Not that this kind of sentimentality would find much favour with him. He insists that he’s grown up and can do all the things that grownups do. He drinks, he smokes, he stays out all night and we can’t stop him. Not that we would want to. But I can’t help thinking that his claim to adulthood would have a little more credibility if he embraced the downsides, too. Like picking up his dirty laundry more frequently than every fortnight. Like washing up occasionally. Like vacuuming his bedroom and even changing his sheets. And like getting up in the morning without causing me a nervous breakdown!

Downsizing May 2012

by Pamela Cormacey

An article written in “Science Daily March 2010” quotes “That people in developed nations are living in good health as much as a decade longer than their parents did”. Although this is an amazing step forward in scientific terms, it can present problems for our ageing population, as they often own large homes which become increasingly difficult to maintain both financially and physically. Jonathan Rees Property Services has the expertise to help you through the transition from the sale of your property to downsizing to either a smaller bungalow/apartment, or alternatively Independent Retirement/Assisted Living. We are currently working in close co-operation with McCarthy & Stone, who are the Market Leaders for Independent Retirement Living and who are currently building a new ‘Assisted Living’ Development in Eastleigh, which will provide excellent accommodation of one and two bedroom luxury apartments. This site is conveniently located on Leigh Road and is within easy reach of Eastleigh Town Centre and Mainline Railway Station. ‘Assisted Living’ enables you to retain independent home ownership, without the worries and responsibilities of a house and garden and gives you the extra benefit of round-the-clock support, should you need it. Everything is designed for your comfort and convenience and with security often a particular concern for the older homebuyer, this is well catered for with advanced security systems and CCTV cameras at the main entrance to the development, together with 24 hr emergency call service. All apartments have a fitted kitchen, a level access shower, in addition to a bath and full wheelchair access. Facilities include lunch served daily in the waitress service restaurant, a laundry and residents’ lounge, where you can socialise with fellow residents, if you so wish. There is also a hotel style guest suite where visiting friends and family can stay, a function room and lifts to all floors. One hour of domestic assistance is provided every week as an integral part of the service charge. Assistance can be given with day-to-day chores such as cleaning, washing, ironing and shopping. Additional domestic assistance can be purchased on request, tailored to meet individual needs, either on a short or long term basis. Personal care can be arranged to suit individual residents’ needs by the on-site care team. As your needs change, personal care can be increased or decreased to meet your needs. If you are thinking of downsizing into Retirement Living in 2012, or just wanting to move to a smaller apartment or bungalow, then please do contact Pamela Cormacey, who is a specialist in Independent Retirement Living and will be delighted to give you a free market appraisal of your home and, if required, more information about the new McCarthy and Stone Assisted Living development at Eastleigh. DISCOVER SHORT STORY

Short Story Bernard's Unlikely Catch Bernard has been fishing on the canal bank since before breakfast. The grey cloud and drizzle have slowly burnt off, and the sun is now peeping shyly from behind fluffy clouds. Early on, the occasional dog walker strolled past and nodded to him. But if anyone lingered too long, or looked as though they wanted to chat, he would pull his cap down and hunch over his fishing pole. Bernard prefers the peace and quiet. He casts another handful of wriggling maggots into the dull water, but the perch aren’t nibbling today and his keep-net has been empty all morning. In the distance he hears the rattle of a bicycle. He glances along the towpath and sees a young woman peddling towards him. She’s riding an old fashioned butcher’s bike with a basket on the front. In it, a flowery shopping bag bounces up and down, as she awkwardly veers along the bumpy path. “Yes it’s a lovely bike, Marjorie, reconditioned,” she declares loudly. Bernard frowns. There appears to be no sign of Marjorie. He then notices the sunlight glinting off a silver object in her ear. “Daft thing’s talking on the phone and not looking where she’s going,” Bernard thinks.

50

Just as she’s about to pass him, a mallard takes flight, quacking in a flurry of alarm. It skims the top of her head and disappears over the hedgerow. The woman cries out and swerves, the front wheel of her bike leaving the narrow path with a jolt and veering towards the canal. With complaining brakes she comes to an abrupt stop. Bernard thinks she’s had a lucky escape, but then in dreadful slow motion, the woman and her bike begin to topple sideways. She puts her foot down to stop herself but beneath it is only water. As she falls the woman lets out a long squeal, then both woman and bike slap straight into the canal. Bernard wipes the drops of cold water from his face and stares dumbstruck at the water. A couple of bubbles break the surface and then the woman bursts up, gasping and flapping her arms about wildly. “You can stand up,” Bernard says gruffly. “It’s not deep.” She struggles to her feet, apparently unhurt, but with grimy rivers flowing down her hair and face. She tries to steady herself and makes a grab for the fishing pole. Bernard carefully moves it out of her reach, as after all these things cost money. Then, feeling

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

more charitable he rises to his feet, and reaches out, offering her his hand. Unsteadily she slips on the slimy canal bottom, flails, then manages to take the outstretched hand. Bernard drags her and the heavy bike out, both scummy with mud and bedraggled in duck weed. The woman sits down squelching on the grass next to Bernard, then spits in a most unladylike fashion into the water. “Well, that was a surprise.” She gasps. She begins to wring the water out of her hair, then freezes as though stung. “My mobile!” She drags her sodden bag out of the bicycle basket, water pouring from it like a sieve. Bernard doesn’t fancy the mobile’s chances, but says nothing. She opens the bag, thrusts her hand inside and then without warning she screams and throws the bag into the air. Bernard is bewildered. He stares at the woman as she points at the bag, opening and closing her mouth. Gingerly, he picks the bag up and looks inside. There, thrashing and twisting, is a beautiful perch. “Well, that’s one way to catch ‘em.” He chuckles. by Jackie Brewster

Masala Lounge opens in Chandlers Ford The venue at the top of the spiral staircase in the Fryern Arcade has been home to a number of businesses over the years. It has recently changed hands again, but if our experience attending the opening night is anything to go by, this one should be here to stay. In mid-April, the Masala Lounge offering Asian Fusion Cuisine opened its doors for the first time. With what must have been a significant budget not to mention a lot of work, the whole restaurant has been transformed to complement the new dining style. An excellent first impression with a warm atmosphere, tasteful décor and comfortable seating. On the night we were offered a buffet style selection. We chose our starters from crispy onion potato bhaji, Thai style spring rolls and butterfly prawn tails with a spicy dipping sauce. All our choices were really tasty but the main course dishes were beckoning.

Traditional dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala are always popular and indeed it was delicious. Kevin’s favourite was what he thought was the Lamb Rogan Josh (in his haste to tuck in, he forgot to ask) which I had to agree was superb with tender pieces of lamb, but it was just beaten for me by the hot Thai chicken green curry with chilli, peppers, bamboo shoots and aubergine. But honestly, every dish was superb. This style of food is sometimes rather heavy and oily but the dishes at the Masala Lounge definitely weren’t. The freshness of the ingredients really shone through and it was clear that the chef had a real skill. It was some of the best ‘Indian’ food we’d ever had and we are happy to endorse them as a very welcome addition to Chandlers Ford.

Melanie and I play a type of Scrabble game on our iphones called Wordfeud and pretty much always have a game on the go. So for her birthday I asked Alison at Made For You to make a cake that looked something like the game. I sent Alison a screen snapshot of the game, chose a couple of words and this picture is of the finished cake. Melanie did keep it for a day or two so she could show her friends and family, meaning everybody was able to enjoy the ‘joke’, admire the artistry, and eat the cake – which was delicious. It was an inspired idea – even if I do say so myself – but Alison did a fantastic job of interpreting my ideas. A whole hearted recommendation from me.

Business Profile:

Bowyer's of Abbotts Ann Richard and Valerie Bowyer know their antiques. They have recently returned to this area after over 35 years running an antiques shop where they exported antiques all over the world. But Richard’s original skill – before buying and selling – was restoration, having been involved in that business since the age of 17. He knows his skill is both unusual and sought after. “I have a highly equipped workshop and that takes years to build up. I have clients ask for furniture restoration, repairs, polishing and waxing and that takes a range of tools as well as a lot of experience”. But he tells us it’s not just antiques he’s asked to do. “I receive requests to work on more modern pieces such as Ercol as well as older furniture”. Offering a collection and delivery service, Richard and Valerie expect to travel to their clients so that they can advise on the best treatment for those important heirlooms.

Patrick Lichfield: The Polaroids A stunning exhibition of photographs by Patrick Lichfield is being displayed at Mottisfont from the 19 May to the 1 July, offering a unique insight into his glamorous world. It presents fascinating montages of the Polaroids he took on every shoot, on display for the first time. It also presents a striking group of Lichfield’s iconic photographs of the royal, the rich and the famous, including a young Bob Geldof, Sir John Gielgud and Joanna Lumley. Particularly striking – and timely in this Diamond Jubilee year – is Lichfield’s double portrait of HRH The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Lichfield started out in the 1960s as a photographer’s assistant on £3 a week, but over the next four decades he gained international renown, contributing numerous now-famous photographs to newspapers, prestigious

magazines and private collections. Though he was the 5th Earl of Lichfield and cousin to the Queen, in his professional life he was known simply as Patrick Lichfield.

Image: HRH The Queen and

Over the years Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh – 1971 to 2004 - Lichfield produced thousands of Polaroids – preparatory ‘snaps’ of enormous interest and insight into his sitters. Lichfield once said, “Polaroids tell us so much of that moment in time, and my own diaries – if ever I wrote them – would contain dozens of them.” Now visitors can gaze into his dazzling world and enjoy this unique record of his illustrious career. by Patrick Lichfield

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS

The Way I See It

News Sheet or Confuse Sheet? I’ve worked on some eccentric publications in my time, including a local paper which banned the title ‘Councillor’. The editor forbade us to put that word in front of any councillor’s name. So, if someone called Smith was on the council, he could not be described in the paper as ‘Cllr Smith’. Instead, he had to be called plain ‘Mr Smith’ (or Mrs or Miss Smith). The thinking was that councillors were self-important meddlers who didn’t deserve a title. This absurd rule hindered us reporters in writing about council meetings. It was difficult to differentiate between what was said by people on the council and what was said by members of the public. More important, the ban on giving council members their historic title was unjust. Council members deserve the status that ‘Councillor’ brings. For most residents, standing for election and risking rejection by voters would be too much to bear. Even if they succeed in getting elected, councillors face years of thankless toil for little or no pay. You don’t get rich being a councillor, and there aren’t many laughs in it either. I’m not saying they’re all saints, but generally local politicians have my respect. That’s why it pains me to see councillors sometimes humiliate themselves through inter-party squabbles, rows and misleading propaganda. Nowhere is the inter-party knockabout more embarrassing than in the political news sheets posted through our front doors here in the Chandlers Ford area. You expect some bias in a political freebie but the distortion in the Tory and Lib Dem papers borders on comedy. Each paper suggests that its party is the sole source of sense on the council, while the other party

64

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

produces only abysmal blunders. Readers of these propaganda sheets need to be wary of parties seeking credit for policies that were in fact introduced by someone else. Just describing some new facility on the front page of a paper carrying a Conservative or Lib Dem banner can give the impression that it was that party that made it happen. A similar device is to say that your party is ‘backing’ a popular idea, without mentioning that it wasn’t actually your party which put the idea into action. Lib Dems and Tories are the only mainstream parties on Eastleigh council, so it’s not surprising that each aims most of its knocking copy at the other. One party newssheet also attacks Labour, which currently doesn’t have a single seat on the council. ‘Labour can’t win here’ is the sort of headline used for this, together with a graph showing Lib Dems and Tories with high numbers of votes, and Labour in a very low third place. Banging on about Labour not being in the race is a poison. It discourages people from voting for what they want. If this profoundly undemocratic idea is followed, no new party will ever get a foothold. We’ll be stuck with the Tories and Lib Dems forever. I say vote for what you want, not for who you think will win.

Lawns A lawn is an essential part of most gardens, but how can you make sure yours looks good? Feeding a lawn is essential to ensure it looks lush and green. Feeding keeps the grasses growing vigorously enough to help keep out moss and weed growth. A poorly maintained and inadequately fed lawn is far more likely to be invaded by moss, weeds and is prone to disease. Choose a lawn fertilizer formulated for the specific needs of the grass at this time of year; nitrogen is often in short supply largely because it is so important in the formation of the grass and, as this is constantly being removed by mowing, it’s constantly necessary to replace it. There are also many other nutrients, in particular phosphorus, potassium and iron which help to promote and maintain top quality growth. The precise amount of fertilizer that your lawn requires is determined by many factors including soil type, frequency of irrigation or rainfall, frequency of mowing and whether clippings are left on the lawn. If your lawn has a weed problem and you’re happy using chemicals, it’s easiest to use a product containing both weed killers (usually two different ones to provide best overall control) and a fertilizer. Applying these together ensures rapid grass growth to fill in the gaps

left by the dead weeds. If you have time, there is a marginally better effect if you feed the lawn with the spring feed then wait a couple of weeks before applying the weed killer. Small infestations of weeds can be removed effectively by hand, using a daisy grubber or even an old kitchen knife. A proprietary moss killer should take care of the moss, but follow the instructions carefully to ensure that the mosses have been thoroughly killed before you attempt to rake them out. If living moss is raked out the problem becomes worse. It’s worth remembering that once the moss is dead the lawn will look worse than when the moss was alive. Once you have raked the dead moss out, the overall effect is even worse – all the bare patches may make you despair, but if you keep the lawn well fed or, if necessary over-seed the worst looking areas as well, it will soon green up. Regular mowing is essential. A lawn which is left for too long before the grass is cut will soon lose its good, green appearance and when it’s finally cut, you may well wonder if it will ever look right again. If cut frequently, so that only small amounts of grass are removed at any one time, it should grow dense and green. As ...Continued on page 68

a rule, you should try to remove up to 30% of the grass growth at a single mowing. During spring, once the weather starts to warm up, the frequency of cut will be noticeably greater than in early spring. With the onset of summer the rate increases rapidly again. However, if the weather is dry and the lawn isn’t well watered, growth rate will be correspondingly slow. If the grass is to be well walked on or used as a playing surface then the cut should be kept to ¾-1 inch. If you want a really smart lawn for show that isn’t subjected to pounding feet, then keep the grass to ¼ inch or slightly longer, but remember that to achieve this during summer you will need to use the mower several times a week – another good reason for keeping a more low-key lawn! What about mowers? The range seems to be ever increasing and the one you choose will probably be determined by cost as well as the job you want your machine to do. If you have a level, fairly high-quality lawn then a cylinder mower is best, as it tends to give a better quality cut. If the surface of your lawn is the

68

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

slightest bit uneven then a rotary mower is a better choice as it will cope much better in ‘adverse’ situations and, in most cases the cut it gives is perfectly adequate. If you remove a fair amount of grass at each cut then the clippings should definitely be raked up immediately. However, if you cut the lawn regularly and produce only tiny clippings then, particularly during very dry weather, there may be some advantage to leaving them on the lawn where they can act like a mulch and help to conserve soil moisture. Freecycle®

Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EastleighFreecycle/ messages
