Your Comprehensive Directory of Local Businesses and Services
Dear Neighbours I am starting this month’s note with an explanation. You’ll notice that the logo on the front now says Discover Chandlers Ford, rather than The Chandlers Ford Directory. We’ve been The Chandlers Ford Directory for nearly eight years, so why change now? Several reasons in fact. When we started the magazine nearly 8 years ago it truly was a directory as we had little content other than advertising. It is still very much a source of local services and trades, but has grown to include far more community, general and useful information. So it’s not really a directory in the same way as it was. But actually more than that, behind the scenes, the business has been growing. Together with a friend and business partner we collectively have several magazines in the area (Hedge End, Southampton, Romsey and the Meon Valley) and we wanted a consistent name across all the publications. One of the magazines was already called Discover and had a logo we liked. So – without too much analysis of the name – that’s what we went for. When Apple and Blackberry are names used for computers and meerkats advertise insurance, linking Discover with a community magazine seems more relevant than many brands these days. So this month’s edition of “Discover Chanders Ford” (I admit, it still feels a bit odd) includes several features related to the Diamond Jubilee celebrations taking place at the beginning of June. Looks to be great fun and I’m sure many of you will be organising a street party, much as last year for the Royal Wedding. On the topic of ‘what’s on’, purely by luck I found out just a couple of hours before going to print this month that there is an event being run by the Chandlers Ford Parish Council on the May Day bank holiday. Disappointingly, despite considerable resources and money being spent on the event, it would seem nobody thought tell us about it so we’ve only been able to include the basic details on the what’s on pages (80 and 81) where you’ll also find details of lots of other May and June events. If you know of any free, charity or general community events taking place, do please email over details by our deadline (the 19th of each month). Tania

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE The Supercar Made in Eastleigh ‘Supercar’ and ‘Eastleigh’ are words that don’t naturally seem to belong in the same sentence. The Lord Nelson class locomotives made in Eastleigh – of course. The supercar made in Maranello – indeed. But supercar and Eastleigh? Some mistake surely? No, no mistake. In 1960 John Gordon and Jim Keeble showed a prototype called the Gordon GT at that year’s Geneva Motor Show. Reviewing the prototype in October 1960, Autocar
magazine wrote, “This journal looks back on the most electrifying vehicle that it has ever tested.” But it would be another three years before their masterpiece came into production in a hangar at Eastleigh airport. Three years of struggling with all the difficulties that can beset a small team trying to produce an enormously ambitious new car on a miniscule budget. Their car, renamed the Gordon-Keeble, was heralded by a full-page advertisement in the 13
March 1964 issue of Autocar magazine. The advertisement took the form of a questionnaire. Some of the questions posed by the advert were: Do you like driving really fast? Do you like to have a car which all eyes admire? Do you like, on occasion, to amble along any old how in top gear? Do you like, on occasion, to make full use of a superb four-speed gearbox and go like a scalded cat? And Can you beg, borrow or steal £2,800? The car was a full four-seater with a decent sized boot. It

was powered by a 5.4-litre V8 engine, the one used in the Chevrolet Corvette, mounted in a space-frame chassis, and clothed in a stunningly beautiful fibreglass body. The body design was the work of a new recruit to Bertone’s famous automotive styling studio in Turin, a young lad called Giorgetto Giugiaro. Car enthusiasts will have heard of him! It was only his second design assignment for Bertone. Half a century later, the young Giugiaro’s design still looks simply stunning and attracts admiration wherever the car is seen. As well as looking great, the car’s performance was electrifying (0-60 in about 6 seconds) and it handled well. The first production car was assembled in late 1963 and shown to the press at London’s Savoy hotel in December of that year. It was now called the GordonKeeble GK1. Every production car was tested by engineer Jim Keeble himself on a circuit of Hampshire roads that included Winchester, Sutton Scotney and the old Winchester by-pass. In his invaluable history of the GordonKeeble, author Charles
8
Giles tells us that “any car which would not exceed an indicated 140 mph would be rejected and returned to the factory for further attention.” In an attempt to undercut better known makes, the car was initially priced at £2,798, a figure that Jim Keeble always thought was too low. The price was later increased to £3,626-11s-3d, but it was still too low, and the company was soon in trouble financially. Component supply problems followed and the company went into receivership in 1965. The GordonKeeble’s emblem is a tortoise, which has always prompted curiosity. The accepted explanation is that during a publicity photo shoot a tortoise walked across in front of the car. Someone picked the creature up and
C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61
placed it on the bonnet of the car, whereupon the tortoise urinated, stripping some of the paintwork. The owners must have felt the incident to be an omen. In July 2010, I went to Eastleigh’s central recreation ground to see a group of Gordon-Keeble cars parade at the end of a 100-mile rally run by the Gordon-Keeble Owners’ Club. The event was part of a celebration of 100 years flying from Eastleigh airport, where the cars were assembled. Of the 100 cars produced, about 90 still survive, largely thanks to that rust-free fibreglass body. They still look fabulous. Most, of course, are in expensively exquisite condition. But it is not a car for today’s petrol prices. The Autocar road test returned a figure of 14.5 mpg overall. Those wonderful Lord Nelson class locomotives may yet enjoy a Second Coming. by Stephen Harvey

DIAMOND JUBILEE TRIBUTE 5 June, Southampton
The world-famous Red Arrows will be an extra highlight of the Cunard's Three Queens Diamond Jubilee Event in Southampton on the 5th June. In what is expected to be the biggest celebration outside London all three ships of the Cunard fleet will sail up the Solent in formation for the first time on the morning, in preparation for a day of special tributes, celebrations and displays. The aerial display team’s focus will be above the Marchwood area of the docks. The display will begin around 6pm and is expected to last almost 25 minutes. The combined sight of Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria together with a seven-aircraft Red Arrows squadron will create both an outstanding spectator experience and a fitting commemoration of Her Majesty’s 60 year reign. The ships will approach the port soon after first light on Tuesday 5 June, sailing in single file up the Solent, with a flotilla of small boats expected to
10
welcome them in. As Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria tie up at their berths, Queen Mary 2 will follow on, turning in the upper swinging ground and then passing each ship in turn, with crew lining the foredeck of all three vessels, and the ships’ whistles sounding in salute of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. After the Red Arrows display, as darkness falls, the celebrations will culminate in an evening spectacular where all three ships will be brought within close proximity of each other, and a fusillade of fireworks and special effects will light up the evening sky beyond them. Queen Mary 2 will then lead Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth in single file down the Solent as all three ships set out on

their celebratory Diamond Jubilee voyages. Mayflower Park will provide the best vantage point for those interested in seeing the arrival of the fleet, the fireworks, and the departure of Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. For the Red Arrows display, Hythe Marina and Town Quay will also offer good viewing. Please note there will be no public parking in Mayflower Park on Tuesday 5 June, please use city centre car parks or public transport. Queries can be sent to: events@southampton.gov.uk

A Queen By Any Other Name There won’t be many republicans in evidence in London this summer. Even non-royalists will be caught up in the pageantry of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations; an event guaranteed, even more so than the Olympics, to lift the nation’s spirits at a time of general despondency. As part of the celebrations The Queen has granted city status to four UK towns: Perth in Scotland; St Asaph in Wales; Chelmsford in England and Armagh in Northern Ireland. There was another time in history when the country’s collective spirits needed lifting – sixty years ago. Residential streets were closed to traffic so that local communities could hold street parties. Bunting and Union flags hung from lines strung from upstairs windows on either side of the streets. Makeshift tables sagged under the weight of sandwiches, jelly and custard and bottles of Tizer. Games were organised, one of which consisted of the father of a family threading a needle and cotton which he then handed to his impatiently waiting offspring who would sprint down the road to the mother. The mother would sew a button onto a square of material which the offspring would then rush to the referee. Not all the families could participate in this game; some of the fathers had not returned home eight years previously. In the evening we sat round our wireless sets to listen to our new Queen’s speech: “…Throughout all my life I shall strive to be worthy of your trust…” In this speech the Queen also paid tribute to the support of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the speech is as valid and as relevant today as it was sixty years ago. Times changed. Britain changed; in some cases beyond recognition. But there has been one constant: a tower of strength whose influence will not be fully appreciated until she is no longer with us. In a much earlier speech, made in Cape Town on her
twenty-first birthday, 21 April 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth declared “… my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service…” Well, we all know now that it was to be long. We also know that she meant every word she said. How differently history would have read had her would-be assassin, Marcus Sarjeant, succeeded in acquiring a real gun and live ammunition. The mentally disturbed teenager fired six blank shots at the Queen as she rode in the Trooping the Colour ceremony on 13 June 1981. He was quickly overpowered by Police Sergeant John Woodcock and St John Ambulance man John Heaseman. He told them “I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a somebody.” And he had written a diary entry: ‘I am going to stun and mystify the world. I will become the most famous teenager in the world.’ Fortunate not to have been shot on the spot he escaped with five years imprisonment. But most notable was Elizabeth II’s majestic reaction to the incident. As her horse,

nineteen-year-old Burmese, panicked and reared she calmly brought him under control and continued with the scheduled ride to Horseguards Parade, comforting him with a few pats on the neck while turning to smile at the cheering crowd. This was, allegedly, the second attempt on the Monarch’s life. According to a retired senior police officer in Australia he was in charge of an investigation in 1981 after a train carrying the Queen and Prince Philip collided with a large log which had been placed on the track after police and a pilot train had passed along the route. The retired officer, Mr McHardy, who claims to have interviewed suspects including IRA sympathisers says the Australian government issued a suppression order to avoid embarrassment. There has so far been no comment from Buckingham Palace on the validity of these claims. True or false I doubt that the Queen loses much sleep over these stories. She has, over the past eight decades, proved herself indomitable. It was the Queen’s consort, HRH Prince Philip,
who pointed out that sometimes a position is more important than the person who occupies that position. With typical clarity he had put the concept in a nutshell: if a nation chooses to have a figurehead then there must be a human to give that position substance, but the human is secondary to the position, not vice versa. For the past sixty years we have been fortunate in having a person worthy of that position; a person of supreme dignity and dedication the like of which this country may never see again. God Save the Queen. By Daniel Hicks

No smudges, chips or drying time – just fabulous nails. If you’ve ever had a manicure or pedicure you will know that although the results look great, the drying time is a real pain. Hobbling around barefoot or being unable to use your hands for a half a day is really inconvenient, and it’s just so easy to catch a nail and find that the perfect finish is ruined. However there are two fantastic products available give you all the benefits with none of drawbacks. Firstly, produced by Creative Nail Design, Shellac is a revolutionary product which applies like polish, wears flawlessly for 14 days of high gloss shine, and is removed in minutes. Shellac paints on like polish and each coat is cured in a UV light so there is zero drying time.
Imagine being able to slip on your shoes or boots straight after your pedicure, or coming home from your two weeks in the sun with the same immaculate manicure that you started with. The second option is Minx™ nail veneers which are saucy, fashionable, dramatic nail coatings, popular with celebrities, designers and models worldwide, yet affordable for all. With a cool, huge range of designs to choose from, your fingers and toes will truly stand out from the crowd. Whether you have natural or enhanced nails, Minx will extend fashion to the very ends of your fingertips! Both Shellac and Minx are available at Mystique Beauty – visit the website for details or call Louise.

'It's Good to Talk' - The Role of Mediation Under legislation that was brought into force last year, the vast majority of married couples who wish to end their relationships and begin divorce proceedings will have to go through a process of ‘Mediation’. Over the past twelve months, a number of people who have come to see me have either been unaware of the term or unsure of what it means, so let me explain. Mediation is a private and confidential dispute resolution process in which an independent, neutral person, the ‘mediator’, is appointed to support both parties in reaching an amicable settlement before there is a need to spend further time and often a great deal of money in Court. It is a process which, rather than looking back into the history of their relationship, is focused on each individual and their futures without ignoring the emotion and pain of separation. Mediation provides the forum to calmly explore the motivations and agendas of parties in order to potentially open up a whole range of solutions that can satisfy both individuals and reach a mutually acceptable, lasting agreement for the future. Through mediation, a dialogue can usually be established that enables couples to work together. It can offer not only critical examination of issues but also creative solutions beyond the powers and remit of the judicial process in Court. At the core of mediation is the concept of confidentiality. Mediation involves not only joint meetings attended by the mediator and both parties, but also private meetings between the
mediator and the individual parties alone. This can usually help avoid the raw emotion that is inevitable in a lot of initial face-to-face meetings. What is discussed in those meetings remains entirely confidential, although the financial aspects can be disclosed. There are great benefits to the process of talking things through in private in order to find ways of moving forward, especially if there are children involved, and Mediation is an ideal mechanism for dealing with disagreements as well as being an aid to the negotiation process. Each individual should ideally be accompanied by a solicitor to advise, support and help them ensure that, amongst all the discussions and potential emotions, whatever proposed settlements or solutions are put forward are both fair and serve the interests of both parties. Since last April, anyone contemplating court proceedings must attend a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) to have the process and options explained to them. If they do not, a judge may refer the proceedings to mediation at a later date. Some mediators offer a free initial meeting, so it is always worthwhile making enquiries. Mediation is definitely here to stay and I believe it is my job and that of my colleagues in the legal profession to make sure people fully understand this worthwhile process.

Life Changing Life Coaching
Most people have something (or several things) in their life they’d like to change. Some feel a general dissatisfaction. Others can pinpoint specifics; work, weight, partner, image, confidence. Bizarrely, very few make changes; the majority simply accept their situation and enjoy a daily moan instead. It doesn’t need to be this way. We can’t change the past but we do have control of our future. You can choose to carry on doing the same things and let life follow the same course or you can choose to make changes to your thinking and behaviour and shape your future. There are many reasons people carry on leading lives they aren’t happy with. It’s often as simple as being so busy they’ve never taken time to stop and think about their life. Or they don’t know how or where to start turning their lives around. Or maybe they know what needs doing but need support and motivation to actually do it. Working with a life coach or an objective friend and following the principles of life coaching is an effective way to transform your life. The first step is to stop and think about how happy you are with your life. You need to know what’s going on before you can ‘fix it’. Take a moment right now and consider how happy you are. Give each area a mark out of ten, ten equals wouldn’t change a thing.

Can you imagine how you’ll feel when you’ve changed that area of your life? Isn’t that feeling worth some time and effort? Life coaching provides support, guidance and motivation to create practical achievable plans to change your life.
5 LIFE CHANGING TIPS Take time out regularly and ask yourself if you’re happy with each area of your life. Choose one thing at a time to change to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Be specific about what you want to achieve and by when. Set small achievable actions. Over time they lead to big changes. Be realistic about what you can get done each week. Set yourself up to succeed.

A Proverbial Life... Many hands make light work
There are some jobs that you try to ignore, to delay or to offload onto someone else. However, eventually the day arrives when you know that you can’t possibly leave it any longer. That day arrived for me last month the loft just had to be cleared. It was jam packed full of ‘stuff’ - littered with the detritus of living in the same house for 25 years. As I lay in bed at night, I convinced myself the rafters were groaning under the combined weight of all this junk. I could feel the oppressive bulk of accumulated possessions pressing down on me, threatening to crash through the ceiling and pin me to the bed. Now, clearing out the loft is - in this house - a controversial issue. No – one wants to do it, or sees the need for it to be done. Apparently, the loft contains priceless treasures that cannot be disturbed, ‘things’ that we may need at some future date or items vital to human life and happiness. However I do know that once something goes up there it never, ever reappears. If it never reappears then we don’t need it – right? This has caused several family debates. Adult sons, no longer living at home, protest that all their childhood possessions are stored there. An eighteen year old daughter – still at home - complains that her soft toys from childhood are there and that she wants them. Well, if she wants them what are they doing in the loft? Eldest son suddenly remembered the Scalextric set confined to the loft for nearly twenty years. Someone then had the bright idea of getting it down to see if it was still working. So, despite my protests, three grown men (four if you include their father), rushed upstairs in a state of high excitement to see what they could find. They didn’t bother with a step ladder but stood on shoulders to gain access, then hauled each other up – I think it’s a macho thing. I stood at the bottom of the stairs, shouting threats of the dire consequences that would befall them if they came crashing through the ceiling.
Several hours later, the living room looked like an advertisement for a car boot sale. There were toys, games, a scooter, boxes of books, broken electrical equipment and other assorted junk scattered around. The Scalextric set had been rediscovered, tested and found to be wanting. Looking at the mess, I consoled myself with the thought that at least most of the ‘stuff’ was now out of the loft – the rafters wouldn’t collapse tonight. That was until they began discussing all the other booty still up there; it seemed that this was just a tiny selection of what the loft contained. However, they did eventually admit that most of it was junk that could be disposed of. We agreed that if there was anything they held dear, then it was to be removed to their own homes. Hurrah. Finally, it was decided that as there was so much sorting out to do it should be a group effort. A date’s been set for the big clearout. Hopefully, it will be a warm, dry day, as everything will have to go into a ‘holding’ area in the garden for sorting into categories: keep, donate, recycle or throw out. It’s going to be a mammoth task – I’ve booked a skip. I’m secretly hoping that we may just find something I lost many years ago...I’ve always been convinced it was in a suitcase in the loft. by A. O’Brien

Working from home I am a media person. I’ve been a journalist, author, and occasional broadcaster since 1976. In those 35 years I’ve reported on everything from Parish Councils to Parliament. I’ve written everything from news in brief paragraphs to books, under headlines ranging from “spate of bicycle thefts rocks village” to “the Art Nouveau riches of Rennes”. I’ve edited newspapers and magazines. I’ve been a regular columnist on Radio 4’s Home Truths (I actually met Peelie himself once) and I’ve even done a bit of TV. Yup, I’m a media person all right. Or at least, I thought I was. Then digital media came along and now I’m beginning to wonder. Working in the media used to be simple. You wrote news stories about things that had happened, or you wrote longer pieces about things you thought people might be interested in. Then, if you were on radio or TV, you read out what you’d written. Even when computers first came along they didn’t change things much: you just wrote on a screen instead of on an unwieldy sandwich of copy-paper and carbons. It was much easier to do the necessary rewrites on screen than on paper, too. So, a boon all round. I started losing the plot when mobile phones came along. At first they too were great. Mobile phones meant a desk head could keep track of the reporting team whatever pub they were in; and for the reporter there was no frantic search for a working phone box near the magistrates’ court or council chamber. The rot started with texting. I never bothered to learn how to text: I rang people; if they didn’t answer I left a message and they rang back. So although I have been shown how to do it I’ve forgotten what I was shown. No big deal. I don’t miss it. But then unlike many people I rarely need a mobile for work. I’m a wee bit deskbound – a dismissive term used in my trade of lazy hacks who prefer to use the phone rather than getting out and meeting people. The landline, obsolete though it may be, is perfectly adequate – and

actually, I rather resent those business contacts of mine who have forsaken the landline altogether since calls to mobiles cost more. As for the Blackberry – it’s nothing more than a laptop for a squirrel! The problem for me isn’t just getting my head round this dazzling piece of technology: it’s getting my fingers to hit one key at a time. So yes, I do have a mobile: it’s a £10 pay-as-you go dead basic Nokia, and it lives in the glove compartment of my car and is used only for telling appointments I’m going to be late, asking for directions to my meeting, or calling the RAC. Facebook, though – that’s another matter. I saw Facebook as a way of marketing my e-book (Lager: The Story of the World’s favourite Beer, £3.34 on Kindle or £2.95 at www.authorsonline.co.uk – a brilliant read even if you’re not interested in lager and the ideal gift!). Since I eagerly started my page I’ve accrued 300+ friends, four of whom have bought the book so far. Friends? Huh. I know there are ways of marketing one’s wares through Facebook, it’s just that as I slip further and further down the digital food-chain I find it harder and harder to work out how to use such media. I guess that’s why teenagers were invented, of which I fortunately possess two. by Ted Bruning

Downsizing May 2012
by Pamela Cormacey
An article written in “Science Daily March 2010” quotes “That people in developed nations are living in good health as much as a decade longer than their parents did”. Although this is an amazing step forward in scientific terms, it can present problems for our ageing population, as they often own large homes which become increasingly difficult to maintain both financially and physically. Jonathan Rees Property Services has the expertise to help you through the transition from the sale of your property to downsizing to either a smaller bungalow/apartment, or alternatively Independent Retirement/Assisted Living. We are currently working in close co-operation with McCarthy & Stone, who are the Market Leaders for Independent Retirement Living and who are currently building a new ‘Assisted Living’ Development in Eastleigh, which will provide excellent accommodation of one and two bedroom luxury apartments. This site is conveniently located on Leigh Road and is within easy reach of Eastleigh Town Centre and Mainline Railway Station. ‘Assisted Living’ enables you to retain independent home ownership, without the worries and responsibilities of a house and garden and gives you the extra benefit of round-the-clock support, should you need it. Everything is designed for your comfort and convenience and with security often a particular concern for the older homebuyer, this is well catered for with advanced security systems and CCTV cameras at the main entrance to the development, together with 24 hr emergency call service. All apartments have a fitted kitchen, a level access shower, in addition to a bath and full wheelchair access. Facilities include lunch served daily in the waitress service restaurant, a laundry and residents’ lounge, where you can socialise with fellow residents, if you so wish. There is also a hotel style guest suite where visiting friends and family can stay, a function room and lifts to all floors. One hour of domestic assistance is provided every week as an integral part of the service charge. Assistance can be given with day-to-day chores such as cleaning, washing, ironing and shopping. Additional domestic assistance can be purchased on request, tailored to meet individual needs, either on a short or long term basis. Personal care can be arranged to suit individual residents’ needs by the on-site care team. As your needs change, personal care can be increased or decreased to meet your needs. If you are thinking of downsizing into Retirement Living in 2012, or just wanting to move to a smaller apartment or bungalow, then please do contact Pamela Cormacey, who is a specialist in Independent Retirement Living and will be delighted to give you a free market appraisal of your home and, if required, more information about the new McCarthy and Stone Assisted Living development at Eastleigh. DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story A letter from the Queen “You know, when I was your age I received a letter from the Queen.” Ellen announced to her son in a transparent attempt to impress him. Charlie looked up from the book he was reading; his beautiful eyes were alight. “Wow! Why did the Queen send you a letter?” Ellen squeezed into the armchair next to him. “I drew a picture of the Queen and sent it to her. So she sent me a thank you letter.” “This Queen?” he asked, “this actual Queen we have now?” Charlie let this news sink in for a moment and then asked, “do you think if I drew a picture the Queen would send me a letter as well?” Ellen smiled, “why not Charlie? It’s worth a try isn’t it?” She enjoyed the quiet hour he spent at the dining table, drawing his picture in deep concentration. Once he had finished he proudly presented it to her. “What do you think Mum? I think she’ll like it.” “It’s lovely,” she agreed. “I think any reigning monarch would be delighted with a drawing of themselves fighting a dalek, armed with just a sceptre and a corgi.” “It’s not a sceptre, it’s a sonic screwdriver,” he said, rifling through her purse for the stamps. The next morning on their way to school Charlie posted his picture. After much deliberation he had addressed it to ‘Her Royal Highness the Queen, care of Buckingham Palace, or Balmoral, if she’s on holiday’. Ellen popped round to see her parents on the way back. Her mum was folding a pile of laundry. “Mum do you remember that letter I had from the Queen?” Her mum chuckled. “That old thing. It took your Dad forever to decide how the Queen would sign her name.” Ellen’s jaw dropped. “Dad? You mean it was really from Dad?” Her mum looked surprised. “Don’t you remember? We’d just exchanged contracts on Sandmere Drive and I suggested you draw a picture for the Queen to keep you quiet while we did the packing.” A memory came back to Ellen of drawing a picture at the little breakfast bar in their first house, surrounded by

piles of newspaper and tea chests. Her Mum patted her hand. “Did you never wonder how the Queen knew your change of address?” Ellen let out a heavy sigh and slumped onto the pile of clean washing. “In that case, do you think Dad would mind writing another for me?” The following week Charlie never once mentioned the letter from the Queen, but Ellen noticed that he was always first into the hallway every time he heard the postman clicking open the garden gate. Then one day, she heard the clatter of the letterbox followed by a little cry of delight. She sighed with relief, and mouthed the words “Thank you Dad”. Charlie came skipping through to the kitchen. “I’ve got post.” His face was beaming. “What is it?” she said, knowing full well. He held up a brown manila envelope. “I don’t know what this is, but it looks like Granddad’s writing.” Ellen’s heart sank. Clearly her son was much smarter than she had been at his age. “But look at this!” he added. Charlie held up another envelope. It was crisp and white with Charlie’s name clearly typed on the front. He placed it in Ellen’s hands with a look of awe on his face. She turned it over. Where it was sealed, embossed in gold, were the lion and the unicorn of the royal coat of arms. by Jackie Brewster

Masala Lounge opens in Chandlers Ford The venue at the top of the spiral staircase in the Fryern Arcade has been home to a number of businesses over the years. It has recently changed hands again, but if our experience attending the opening night is anything to go by, this one should be here to stay. In mid-April, the Masala Lounge offering Asian Fusion Cuisine opened its doors for the first time. With what must have been a significant budget not to mention a lot of work, the whole restaurant has been transformed to complement the new dining style. An excellent first impression with a warm atmosphere, tasteful décor and comfortable seating. On the night we were offered a buffet style selection. We chose our starters from crispy onion potato bhaji, Thai style spring rolls and butterfly prawn tails with a spicy dipping sauce. All our choices were really tasty but the main course dishes were beckoning.

Traditional dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala are always popular and indeed it was delicious. Kevin’s favourite was what he thought was the Lamb Rogan Josh (in his haste to tuck in, he forgot to ask) which I had to agree was superb with tender pieces of lamb, but it was just beaten for me by the hot Thai chicken green curry with chilli, peppers, bamboo shoots and aubergine. But honestly, every dish was superb. This style of food is sometimes rather heavy and oily but the dishes at the Masala Lounge definitely weren’t. The freshness of the ingredients really shone through and it was clear that the chef had a real skill. It was some of the best ‘Indian’ food we’d ever had and we are happy to endorse them as a very welcome addition to Chandlers Ford.

It presents fascinating montages of the Polaroids he took on every shoot, on display for the first time. It also presents a striking group of Lichfield’s iconic photographs of the royal, the rich and the famous, including a young Bob Geldof, Sir John Gielgud and Joanna Lumley. Particularly striking – and timely in this Diamond Jubilee year – is Lichfield’s double portrait of HRH The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Lichfield started out in the 1960s as a photographer’s assistant on £3 a week, but over the next four decades he gained international renown, contributing numerous now-famous photographs to newspapers, prestigious

magazines and private collections. Though he was the 5th Earl of Lichfield and cousin to the Queen, in his professional life he was known simply as Patrick Lichfield.

Over the years Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh – 1971 to 2004 - Lichfield produced thousands of Polaroids – preparatory ‘snaps’ of enormous interest and insight into his sitters. Lichfield once said, “Polaroids tell us so much of that moment in time, and my own diaries – if ever I wrote them – would contain dozens of them.” Now visitors can gaze into his dazzling world and enjoy this unique record of his illustrious career. by Patrick Lichfield

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS
The Way I See It
News Sheet or Confuse Sheet? I’ve worked on some eccentric publications in my time, including a local paper which banned the title ‘Councillor’. The editor forbade us to put that word in front of any councillor’s name. So, if someone called Smith was on the council, he could not be described in the paper as ‘Cllr Smith’. Instead, he had to be called plain ‘Mr Smith’ (or Mrs or Miss Smith). The thinking was that councillors were self-important meddlers who didn’t deserve a title. This absurd rule hindered us reporters in writing about council meetings. It was difficult to differentiate between what was said by people on the council and what was said by members of the public. More important, the ban on giving council members their historic title was unjust. Council members deserve the status that ‘Councillor’ brings. For most residents, standing for election and risking rejection by voters would be too much to bear. Even if they succeed in getting elected, councillors face years of thankless toil for little or no pay. You don’t get rich being a councillor, and there aren’t many laughs in it either. I’m not saying they’re all saints, but generally local politicians have my respect. That’s why it pains me to see councillors sometimes humiliate themselves through inter-party squabbles, rows and misleading propaganda. Nowhere is the inter-party knockabout more embarrassing than in the political news sheets posted through our front doors here in the Chandlers Ford area. You expect some bias in a political freebie but the distortion in the Tory and Lib Dem papers borders on comedy. Each paper suggests that its party is the sole source of sense on the council, while the other party
64
C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61
produces only abysmal blunders. Readers of these propaganda sheets need to be wary of parties seeking credit for policies that were in fact introduced by someone else. Just describing some new facility on the front page of a paper carrying a Conservative or Lib Dem banner can give the impression that it was that party that made it happen. A similar device is to say that your party is ‘backing’ a popular idea, without mentioning that it wasn’t actually your party which put the idea into action. Lib Dems and Tories are the only mainstream parties on Eastleigh council, so it’s not surprising that each aims most of its knocking copy at the other. One party newssheet also attacks Labour, which currently doesn’t have a single seat on the council. ‘Labour can’t win here’ is the sort of headline used for this, together with a graph showing Lib Dems and Tories with high numbers of votes, and Labour in a very low third place. Banging on about Labour not being in the race is a poison. It discourages people from voting for what they want. If this profoundly undemocratic idea is followed, no new party will ever get a foothold. We’ll be stuck with the Tories and Lib Dems forever. I say vote for what you want, not for who you think will win.

Keeping
Peststheat Bay Natural Way More and more people have become concerned about using chemicals in the garden. Indeed, some gardeners have used chemicals rarely, if at all, for many years. It may be that you are worried about wildlife and conservation in general or you may also be concerned about using gardening pesticides on plants that children or pets might play near, or that you intend to eat. Greener gardening is not difficult, it is just different. Some of the most infuriating pests are to be found in greenhouses, conservatories and other protected areas, where they can thrive and breed rapidly. It is a great help to know that there are now many ‘natural’ controls available in the form of predators and parasites, which can be purchased from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood. com) and then released into your greenhouse or conservatory. These insects or mites do a great job of keeping many common pests at bay, including whitefly, red spider mite and mealy bugs. There are also excellent controls available for slugs and for vine weevils, both of which can be used successfully outside too. For those who are troubled by pests such as leather jackets (symptoms are deteriorating patches in the lawn, shortly followed by the lawn being ripped up by birds or badgers searching for the ‘delicious’ grubs) or chafer grubs (also responsible for damage caused by eating plant roots), there are now biological controls available to keep these at bay too. There is also
a fairly new control available, which sends ants off in the other direction – wonderful if you like to lie on the lawn or enjoy meals in your garden without being nipped! I garden organically so I use these biological controls regularly. If your conservatory is also used as a place where you or the family relax or perhaps enjoy a drink or a meal, I’d say it is especially important not to fill it full of potentially harmful chemicals. If you want to try these controls then you will need to make sure that your greenhouse or conservatory is not already packed full of chemical residues - otherwise they may kill the beneficial creatures you are introducing. For whitefly you need a tiny parasitic wasp called Encarsia and for red spider mite you need another mite, this time the predatory Phytoseiulus. Introduce these in amongst the infested plants and they will automatically go in search of the pests, soon getting their numbers under control and all without you having to lift a finger.

It may sound off-putting to release wasps into your greenhouse or conservatory (or mites come to that) but these little creatures are tiny and will not bite or sting: they are only interested in the pests. Biological controls, including those for slugs and vine weevils, are all tricky for garden centres to stock, as what you are buying are living creatures which won’t survive if left sitting on a warm shelf for too long. Mail order is therefore the best way to buy generally, with your predators or parasites arriving in the post along with strict instructions for storage (they should usually be kept in the fridge) and for using before the use-by date expires. But don’t let this put you off: biological controls are excellent and are used by many professional growers. To ensure success you must follow the instructions precisely and make sure you introduce the control when there are a few, but
68
C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61
not too many, pests around. If you wait until the air is choked with whitefly it can be a bit too much of an uphill struggle for the tiny little wasps. But the great thing is that you can relax in the knowledge that you’re not jeopardising any wildlife and that, in many cases, the biological control becomes self-perpetuating as the ‘critters’ you have bought breed and spread within the greenhouse. Now that’s what I call useful. by Pippa Greenwood Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and sign up for her newsletter (and receive a free ebook on organic gardening) and shop from the new products area which offers a great selection of biological controls (for slugs, vine weevils, red spider mite, whitefly etc) plus growing frames, cloches, raised bed kits and lots, lots more.

Freecycle®
Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ EastleighFreecycle/messages

Test Valley – 01264 368000 http://www.testvalley.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=5200 Eastleigh Borough Council – 023 8068 8000 http://www.eastleigh.gov.uk/waste-recyclingenvironment.aspx
Agreement to go ahead with arrangements to replace Eastleigh's Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) with a new facility in a new location, has been agreed subject to a planning consent. Hampshire County has been working with Eastleigh Borough Council on plans to build a new Household Waste Recycling Centry at Stoney Croft Rise, off Chestnut Avenue in Eastleigh (near the BMW garage). This would replace the existing facility located at Woodside Avenue. The split level arrangement planned for the proposed new HWRC would make it easier for local residents to deposit their household waste and recyclables. Instead of having to walk up steps to deposit waste into the container bins, residents will be able to deposit their recycled waste into the bins from upper level walkways in between. In all, it is proposed that there will be seven double bin bays, as well as additional storage for other types of waste. Another benefit of the split level layout is that full waste containers can be removed and replaced without having to temporarily close the public area (as is the case at the current site), because servicing vehicles can reach the containers directly from the lower level, without disruption, reducing congestion and ensuring that the HWRC can remain open for residents. The design for the new HWRC includes providing a new access road with an on-site vehicle lane to enable vehicles to queue off the highway reducing congestion to the local road network and car parking including provision for disabled residents. Subject to satisfactory agreement of terms between both councils, the granting of planning permission and an Environmental Permit, building of a new, split-level HWRC could begin in 2013 Set to cost in the region of £1 million, construction would be funded by Eastleigh Borough Council who, in turn, would become the land owners of the site on which the current facility is located.
