01489 660022 When compiling the magazine this month I found there is so much happening in the area in May and June that I could hardly keep up with it; Garden Fairs, Festivals, Carnivals... fantastic. Indeed, as I write, Melanie and I are going to the Wickham Beer Festival (Discover is sponsoring a barrel of beer; our husbands think this means they are obliged to drink the contents!). Dates of the other events are highlighted in my calendar to attend too. Why am I so impressed, you may ask? In an earlier edition, I mentioned that I live in Chandlers Ford and publish Discover Chandlers Ford. It’s a mere 6 miles away from Meon Valley yet, when I compare the community spirit in Chandlers Ford with the Meon Valley, it might as well be the other side of the country. My problem in Chandlers Ford is finding a sufficient number of events to make up a list; in the Meon Valley the problem is finding enough space to list them all. I can tell you that in Chandlers Ford nothing like this takes place. Nearly two years ago there was a community fair, but it didn’t run last year so “who knows?” for this year. Apart from that, zilch. Yet there are more homes in Chandlers Ford than we distribute to in the Meon Valley (SO32, PO17 5, PO17 6 and GU32 1 totals 13,300 homes compared to Chandlers Ford’s 13700) and the latter area is much more compact. I have no explanation, but I’m sharing this to let you know that not only are you fortunate to have so much happening, but the real fortune is to have so many wonderful people prepared to volunteer their time to organise these events, many of which are raising money for charity. We appreciate that Meon Valley residents support Discover by using the excellent businesses that advertise with us, and in turn we do what we can to support the community. So, this month we’ve featured as much as we have space for on the exciting forthcoming months in the Meon Valley. Hope we’ll see you there! Tania

Counselling with Julie Chivers: The Carer's Trap I have begun to meet a number of people who find themselves in what I describe as a carer’s trap. There is a generation now who find themselves with the responsibility of not only looking after their children, but also looking after their parents or in-laws too. This can cause tension in families and possibly feelings of guilt; how does the carer prioritise their time? Let’s not forget most carers are working too.

the situation through with a counsellor such as myself can create some thinking space by letting go of some of the frustration. This space leaves room to explore different ways of approaching certain problems and maybe, for the first time in a long time, allowing yourself – the carer in the equation - some time. After all, if things are not right with the carer, they won’t be right with those being cared for either.

Clients I have met in this situation describe feeling overwhelmed, lacking control and somehow feeling they are never in the right place, or doing the right thing, at the right time – or so they believe. The frustrations of chasing their tail can be debilitating.

This is where counselling can help. As a counsellor I can sit alongside you, providing somewhere to talk about the feelings and responsibility and hopefully discovering what is manageable.

With a mind overflowing with responsibilities how do you think straight? Sometimes talking

A Queen By Any Other Name There won’t be many republicans in evidence in London this summer. Even non-royalists will be caught up in the pageantry of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations; an event guaranteed, even more so than the Olympics, to lift the nation’s spirits at a time of general despondency. As part of the celebrations The Queen has granted city status to four UK towns: Perth in Scotland; St Asaph in Wales; Chelmsford in England and Armagh in Northern Ireland. There was another time in history when the country’s collective spirits needed lifting – sixty years ago. Residential streets were closed to traffic so that local communities could hold street parties. Bunting and Union flags hung from lines strung from upstairs windows on either side of the streets. Makeshift tables sagged under the weight of sandwiches, jelly and custard and bottles of Tizer. Games were organised, one of which consisted of the father of a family threading a needle and cotton which he then handed to his impatiently waiting offspring who would sprint down the road to the mother. The mother would sew a button onto a square of material which the offspring would then rush to the referee. Not all the families could participate in this game; some of the fathers had not returned home eight years previously. In the evening we sat round our wireless sets to listen to our new Queen’s speech: “…Throughout all my life I shall strive to be worthy of your trust…” In this speech the Queen also paid tribute to the support of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the speech is as valid and as relevant today as it was sixty years ago. Times changed. Britain changed; in some cases beyond recognition. But there has been one constant: a tower of strength whose influence will not be fully appreciated until she is no longer with us. In a much earlier speech, made in Cape Town on her

twenty-first birthday, 21 April 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth declared “… my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service…” Well, we all know now that it was to be long. We also know that she meant every word she said. How differently history would have read had her would-be assassin, Marcus Sarjeant, succeeded in acquiring a real gun and live ammunition. The mentally disturbed teenager fired six blank shots at the Queen as she rode in the Trooping the Colour ceremony on 13 June 1981. He was quickly overpowered by Police Sergeant John Woodcock and St John Ambulance man John Heaseman. He told them “I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a somebody.” And he had written a diary entry: ‘I am going to stun and mystify the world. I will become the most famous teenager in the world.’ Fortunate not to have been shot on the spot he escaped with five years imprisonment. But most notable was Elizabeth II’s majestic reaction to the incident. As her horse,

who pointed out that sometimes a position is more important than the person who occupies that position. With typical clarity he had put the concept in a nutshell: if a nation chooses to have a figurehead then there must be a human to give that position substance, but the human is secondary to the position, not vice versa. For the past sixty years we have been fortunate in having a person worthy of that position; a person of supreme dignity and dedication the like of which this country may never see again. This was, allegedly, the second attempt on the Monarch’s life. According to a retired senior police officer in Australia he was in charge of an investigation in 1981 after a train carrying the Queen and Prince Philip collided with a large log which had been placed on the track after police and a pilot train had passed along the route. The retired officer, Mr McHardy, who claims to have interviewed suspects including IRA sympathisers says the Australian government issued a suppression order to avoid embarrassment. There has so far been no comment from Buckingham Palace on the validity of these claims. True or false I doubt that the Queen loses much sleep over these stories. She has, over the past eight decades, proved herself indomitable. It was the Queen’s consort, HRH Prince Philip,

DISCOVER HOME

Working from home I am a media person. I’ve been a journalist, author, and occasional broadcaster since 1976. In those 35 years I’ve reported on everything from Parish Councils to Parliament. I’ve written everything from news in brief paragraphs to books, under headlines ranging from “spate of bicycle thefts rocks village” to “the Art Nouveau riches of Rennes”. I’ve edited newspapers and magazines. I’ve been a regular columnist on Radio 4’s Home Truths (I actually met Peelie himself once) and I’ve even done a bit of TV. Yup, I’m a media person all right. Or at least, I thought I was. Then digital media came along and now I’m beginning to wonder. Working in the media used to be simple. You wrote news stories about things that had happened, or you wrote longer pieces about things you thought people might be interested in. Then, if you were on radio or TV, you read out what you’d written. Even when computers first came along they didn’t change things much: you just wrote on a screen instead of on an unwieldy sandwich of copy-paper and carbons. It was much easier to do the necessary rewrites on screen than on paper, too. So, a boon all round. I started losing the plot when mobile phones came along. At first they too were great. Mobile phones meant a desk head could keep track of the reporting team whatever pub they were in; and for the reporter there was no frantic search for a working phone box near the magistrates’ court or council chamber. The rot started with texting. I never bothered to learn how to text: I rang people; if they didn’t answer I left a message and they rang back. So although I have been shown how to do it I’ve forgotten what I was shown. No big deal. I don’t miss it. But then unlike many people I rarely need a mobile for work. I’m a wee bit deskbound – a dismissive term used in my trade of lazy hacks who prefer to use the phone rather than getting out and meeting people. The landline, obsolete though it may be, is perfectly adequate – and

16

w w w. d i s c o v e r m e o n v a l l e y.c o.u k

actually, I rather resent those business contacts of mine who have forsaken the landline altogether since calls to mobiles cost more. As for the Blackberry – it’s nothing more than a laptop for a squirrel! The problem for me isn’t just getting my head round this dazzling piece of technology: it’s getting my fingers to hit one key at a time. So yes, I do have a mobile: it’s a £10 pay-as-you go dead basic Nokia, and it lives in the glove compartment of my car and is used only for telling appointments I’m going to be late, asking for directions to my meeting, or calling the RAC. Facebook, though – that’s another matter. I saw Facebook as a way of marketing my e-book (Lager: The Story of the World’s favourite Beer, £3.34 on Kindle or £2.95 at www.authorsonline.co.uk – a brilliant read even if you’re not interested in lager and the ideal gift!). Since I eagerly started my page I’ve accrued 300+ friends, four of whom have bought the book so far. Friends? Huh. I know there are ways of marketing one’s wares through Facebook, it’s just that as I slip further and further down the digital food-chain I find it harder and harder to work out how to use such media. I guess that’s why teenagers were invented, of which I fortunately possess two. by Ted Bruning

Pretty Perfect Despite the prevalence of flat pack, massmanufactured furniture in many homes, Simon Pretty’s hand-made traditional furniture business is thriving, proving that there is still a demand for quality, heritage furniture which can be handed down through the generations. Simon is a traditionally trained cabinet maker. He studied his craft at college gaining a City & Guilds qualification in cabinet-making and then going on to earn an HND in furniture design. College qualifications are an excellent start of course but Simon himself says that one of his best experiences was taking a three year apprenticeship at The Barnsley Workshop in Petersfield. As testament to the skills he learnt during his time there – in total, five years – Simon was awarded two Guild Marks. This is a highly prestigious award of which only a few are given out each year.

After a three year employment in Bermuda making furniture and also undertaking restoration and joinery work, Simon returned to the UK in 2008, just as the downturn in the economy was taking hold. But, confident that there would always be a market for quality furniture, Simon set up his own workshop in 2009 and his business has gone from strength to strength since. Simon told us “I am a designer as well as a cabinet-maker, but I am happy to produce pieces which closely replicate a design a client may have seen elsewhere. I use solid native timber wherever possible, and I have recently found a supplier who can provide locally sourced timber. I love the beauty of natural wood and fortunately so do my clients”. So whether it’s a piece of standalone furniture for your home or a space that needs a custom fitted solution, look no further: call Simon Pretty on 0779 226 3041. c o n t a c t u s @ d i s c o v e r m e o n v a l l e y.c o .u k

DISCOVER SHORT STORY

Short Story A letter from the Queen “You know, when I was your age I received a letter from the Queen.” Ellen announced to her son in a transparent attempt to impress him. Charlie looked up from the book he was reading; his beautiful eyes were alight. “Wow! Why did the Queen send you a letter?” Ellen squeezed into the armchair next to him. “I drew a picture of the Queen and sent it to her. So she sent me a thank you letter.” “This Queen?” he asked, “this actual Queen we have now?” Charlie let this news sink in for a moment and then asked, “do you think if I drew a picture the Queen would send me a letter as well?” Ellen smiled, “why not Charlie? It’s worth a try isn’t it?” She enjoyed the quiet hour he spent at the dining table, drawing his picture in deep concentration. Once he had finished he proudly presented it to her. “What do you think Mum? I think she’ll like it.” “It’s lovely,” she agreed. “I think any reigning monarch would be delighted with a drawing of themselves fighting a dalek, armed with just a sceptre and a corgi.” “It’s not a sceptre, it’s a sonic screwdriver,” he said, rifling through her purse for the stamps. The next morning on their way to school Charlie posted his picture. After much deliberation he had addressed it to ‘Her Royal Highness the Queen, care of Buckingham Palace, or Balmoral, if she’s on holiday’. Ellen popped round to see her parents on the way back. Her mum was folding a pile of laundry. “Mum do you remember that letter I had from the Queen?” Her mum chuckled. “That old thing. It took your Dad forever to decide how the Queen would sign her name.” Ellen’s jaw dropped. “Dad? You mean it was really from Dad?” Her mum looked surprised. “Don’t you remember? We’d just exchanged contracts on Sandmere Drive and I suggested you draw a picture for the Queen to keep you quiet while we did the packing.” A memory came back to Ellen of drawing a picture at the little breakfast bar in their first house, surrounded by

22

piles of newspaper and tea chests. Her Mum patted her hand. “Did you never wonder how the Queen knew your change of address?” Ellen let out a heavy sigh and slumped onto the pile of clean washing. “In that case, do you think Dad would mind writing another for me?” The following week Charlie never once mentioned the letter from the Queen, but Ellen noticed that he was always first into the hallway every time he heard the postman clicking open the garden gate. Then one day, she heard the clatter of the letterbox followed by a little cry of delight. She sighed with relief, and mouthed the words “Thank you Dad”. Charlie came skipping through to the kitchen. “I’ve got post.” His face was beaming. “What is it?” she said, knowing full well. He held up a brown manila envelope. “I don’t know what this is, but it looks like Granddad’s writing.” Ellen’s heart sank. Clearly her son was much smarter than she had been at his age. “But look at this!” he added. Charlie held up another envelope. It was crisp and white with Charlie’s name clearly typed on the front. He placed it in Ellen’s hands with a look of awe on his face. She turned it over. Where it was sealed, embossed in gold, were the lion and the unicorn of the royal coat of arms. by Jackie Brewster

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE The Supercar Made in Eastleigh ‘Supercar’ and ‘Eastleigh’ are words that don’t naturally seem to belong in the same sentence. The Lord Nelson class locomotives made in Eastleigh – of course. The supercar made in Maranello – indeed. But supercar and Eastleigh? Some mistake surely? No, no mistake. In 1960 John Gordon and Jim Keeble showed a prototype called the Gordon GT at that year’s Geneva Motor Show. Reviewing the prototype in October 1960, Autocar

magazine wrote, “This journal looks back on the most electrifying vehicle that it has ever tested.” But it would be another three years before their masterpiece came into production in a hangar at Eastleigh airport. Three years of struggling with all the difficulties that can beset a small team trying to produce an enormously ambitious new car on a miniscule budget. Their car, renamed the Gordon-Keeble, was heralded by a full-page advertisement in the 13

March 1964 issue of Autocar magazine. The advertisement took the form of a questionnaire. Some of the questions posed by the advert were: Do you like driving really fast? Do you like to have a car which all eyes admire? Do you like, on occasion, to amble along any old how in top gear? Do you like, on occasion, to make full use of a superb four-speed gearbox and go like a scalded cat? And Can you beg, borrow or steal £2,800? The car was a full four-seater with a decent sized boot. It

was powered by a 5.4-litre V8 engine, the one used in the Chevrolet Corvette, mounted in a space-frame chassis, and clothed in a stunningly beautiful fibreglass body. The body design was the work of a new recruit to Bertone’s famous automotive styling studio in Turin, a young lad called Giorgetto Giugiaro. Car enthusiasts will have heard of him! It was only his second design assignment for Bertone. Half a century later, the young Giugiaro’s design still looks simply stunning and attracts admiration wherever the car is seen. As well as looking great, the car’s performance was electrifying (0-60 in about 6 seconds) and it handled well. The first production car was assembled in late 1963 and shown to the press at London’s Savoy hotel in December of that year. It was now called the GordonKeeble GK1. Every production car was tested by engineer Jim Keeble himself on a circuit of Hampshire roads that included Winchester, Sutton Scotney and the old Winchester by-pass. In his invaluable history of the GordonKeeble, author Charles

30

w w w. d i s c o v e r m e o n v a l l e y.c o.u k

Giles tells us that “any car which would not exceed an indicated 140 mph would be rejected and returned to the factory for further attention.” In an attempt to undercut better known makes, the car was initially priced at £2,798, a figure that Jim Keeble always thought was too low. The price was later increased to £3,626-11s-3d, but it was still too low, and the company was soon in trouble financially. Component supply problems followed and the company went into receivership in 1965. The GordonKeeble’s emblem is a tortoise, which has always prompted curiosity. The accepted explanation is that during a publicity photo shoot a tortoise walked across in front of the car. Someone picked the creature up and

placed it on the bonnet of the car, whereupon the tortoise urinated, stripping some of the paintwork. The owners must have felt the incident to be an omen. In July 2010, I went to Eastleigh’s central recreation ground to see a group of Gordon-Keeble cars parade at the end of a 100-mile rally run by the Gordon-Keeble Owners’ Club. The event was part of a celebration of 100 years flying from Eastleigh airport, where the cars were assembled. Of the 100 cars produced, about 90 still survive, largely thanks to that rust-free fibreglass body. They still look fabulous. Most, of course, are in expensively exquisite condition. But it is not a car for today’s petrol prices. The Autocar road test returned a figure of 14.5 mpg overall. Those wonderful Lord Nelson class locomotives may yet enjoy a Second Coming. by Stephen Harvey

Volunteers needed for Meon Valley Community Responders

Community Responders are called to 999 calls where the ability to reach a patient quickly and administer basic lifesaving support until the Ambulance Paramedic arrives is vital. Typically this is where someone has suffered a cardiac arrest, a stroke or some other life-threatening medical emergency. This is especially needed in rural areas where an ambulance cannot always reach the scene straight away. We work alongside South Central Ambulance service and need volunteers to join us.
