Although it isn’t obvious from the cover, behind the scenes at Discover Meon Valley there has been a big change. Until September the magazine was run by Adrian Bird. However, Adrian had decided during the summer that he wanted to pursue some other business interests and had looked for a new owner. Offering a successful, well established and very popular community magazine, it didn’t take too long to find someone, and that is me. My name is Tania Houston and I’m the new editor of Discover Meon Valley. This is not a new ‘job’ to me though because I’ve been publishing a very similar publication in Chandlers Ford for over seven years, so I was fortunate to be able to hit the ground running – albeit any takeover will inevitably meet a few hurdles along the way. I’m not doing this by myself though, I’m glad to say. The other picture above is of Melanie Tinson who is the first contact for any advertising and distribution enquiries. Again Melanie also runs a magazine, The Southampton Directory, which is delivered to homes in Botley and Hedge End all the way over to Totton. Although Melanie and I are the main people in the business, we also have a great support team with Heather our designer, Kevin (my husband) who helps out generally and does the hard work of dropping off the boxes to the distributors, and of course the distributors themselves. One of the features that has always been really popular in other areas is that of local history. If you have lived in this area for many years and can remember things being different we would really love to hear from you. Or maybe you just have some old photos – it would be so wonderful to be able to share these with other Meon Valley residents. Until next month Tania Houston, Editor.

Buy Beauty

For Less

As the country well and truly feels the financial pinch of the recession, there’s a lot of pressure on us to be careful with our money, to spend it wisely and to adapt to a less indulgent lifestyle. So buying those designer labelled beauty products - complete with very large price tags - can become difficult to justify for those of us on a weekly budget. Yes, it’s hard to fight the allure of the brand and the promises that come with it, not to mention the sublime packaging and determined sales pitch from the assistant. We all have a tendency to think that if it’s designer and expensive, then it’s guaranteed to make our skin more youthful, our lips look fuller and our lashes appear longer. We reassure ourselves that the expense is, of course, worthwhile but in reality, are there other products that can transform us from plain to gorgeous, for half the cost? Is a healthy glow, flawless skin, luscious lashes and perfect pout only available if you buy into expensive top brands or is there an effective value for money alternative? Well, thanks to the new trend in budget beauty, a superb range of affordably priced buys are emerging. They might not be quite as exciting and glamorous as designer alternatives, but they do offer surprising results at pleasing prices. The once uninteresting ‘value’ ranges have been overhauled and replaced with ones that

are far more likely to grab our attention and make us realise that these products can stand up well against the competition. After all, what makes a beauty product great is what it can do for you, not the name on the container. With supermarkets like Tesco leading the way with unbelievably cheap prices on cosmetics, these budget buys provide a great way for us to try out different or fashion-forward make-up looks, that we usually wouldn’t want to invest a lot of money in. The cheap price tag makes experimenting fun, and a few pounds lost in an unsuitable lipstick is easy to live with, unlike the hefty credit card bill from the beauty counter of a top brand. And it isn’t just cosmetics that are available at bargain prices. Everyday essentials are great value too. If you love relaxing with expensive bath and body products then you won’t be ...Continued on page 10

disappointed. The Body Shop - although slightly more expensive than some of the really cheap budget buys - is always the best for sumptuous, sweet smelling ranges that are perfect for pampering, cater for all needs and rival any designer fragrance. More than ever before valuefor-money products can even be found in your favourite clothing store. Next have a fabulous range of items that are fashion inspired and affordably priced, so you can finish a trendy new look perfectly.

Their vast range of varnishes bring nails up-todate, at a price that allows you to try out every colour in the range. Although it is hard to deny that a lipstick clad with an iconic designer logo looks so much more sophisticated in any handbag than a budget alternative, when on the lips the two look equally effective. And of course, with what you save on a designer lipstick, you can invest in expanding your make-up bag, finding a new look that really suits you and a satisfaction in knowing that, even with all the new purchases, you are still saving money. by Helen Jane Taylor

The Latest on Gel Nail Lacquer from Mark your calendars, mani-maniacs. This November, OPI is launching a new soak-off gel called OPI GelColor. A faster-curing, thinner formula than OPI Axxium Soak-Off Gel, it comes in bottles with brush applicators like polish, and cures under light emitting diodes (LED) like those used in your TV remote control. Sure OPI GelColor sounds a lot like CND Shellac, a gel/ polish hybrid, but GelColor isn’t a hybrid, it’s gel. It's 28 shades will include neutrals, brights, darks, sheer and shimmer and Baytree Beauty Salon can't wait to get them in! Baytree Beauty have been using the OPI Axxium Soak Off Gel Lacquer with great results for over 2years. This Gel is aimed at the customer who requires strength and protection for their natural nails with long lasting colour. New OPI GelColor is simply a solution to long lasting colour, but may not offer clients the strength their nails need. These OPI gel Lacquers are great for any

occasion that demands long lasting colour with simple between service maintenance. Your OPI trained nail technicians will advise you on which Gel treatment should suit you. These Gel Lacquers will soak off in as little as 15 minutes. Professional removal is recommended before home kits are purchased as picking off Gel lacquer will damage and weaken your natural nails. For nearly 20 years, OPI has led the nail polish colour revolution with their fantastic range. Now, OPI leads the Gel nail polish revolution with the Axxium and Gelcolor Soak Off Lacquers. These gel nail lacquers go on like a nail polish, are instantly solid dry giving results that are nothing short of brilliant! chicken dhansak

This warming curry is perfect for a chilly Autumn evening. It’s a fairly mild dish, but if you prefer something a little hotter, add a chopped red or green chilli pepper to the minced onion mixture. The ingredients needed are...

1

Place the onion, garlic and ginger in a food processor or blender and whizz for a few seconds until finely minced.

2

Heat the oil in a large, deep frying pan and fry the minced onion mixture for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute.

3

Cut the chicken fillets into large chunks and add to the frying pan. Cook over a medium heat until no longer pink. Stir in the red lentils and stock or water. Cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally for 30-35 minutes until the chicken and lentils are tender.

4

2 large tomatoes, roughly chopped

Add the tomatoes and simmer uncovered for a further 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the tomatoes are soft. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve with boiled basmati rice and onion and cucumber relish. Garnish with fried onions.

October It’s October, and we’re well into the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Out in the fields and woods the 12-bores are banging ceaselessly as luckless pheasants tumble from the sky, while happy country landowners gleefully trouser the improbable quantities of cash people are prepared to pay for a spot of shooting these days. (You aren’t even able to keep what you kill: that goes off to Tesco, where it looks decidedly un-baronial all shrinkwrapped on its plastic tray). Actually, I like the idea of game better than the taste. I used to inhabit a bucolic dream world where everything was wood smoke and Vaughan Williams, and horsey girls looking awkward in their evening gowns at the Hunt Ball. Pheasant and venison were all part of the fantasy; but most game is a swine to cook. Being fat-free may sound virtuous, but in the hands of a tyro (like me) it usually means impossible to chew. In my younger days I used to pot the odd hare, but it’s strong stuff and actually only my Dad really liked it. Then I met a girl from Leeds and stopped wearing corduroy. The gun went back to the shop and it’s, oh, 30 years since I killed anything. The bucolic haze hasn’t entirely ebbed from my daydreaming, though, but nowadays the autumnal whiff of cordite has been succeeded by a richer, sweeter, aroma: that of apples. The apple harvest starts in July with the earliest varieties and goes on until November, but October is the big month and yes: I’ve become a cider nut. Actually, I’ve been a cider nut for quite some time: in the late ‘90s I edited the Campaign for Real Ale’s Good Cider Guide, ran a quarterly called The Cider Press, and briefly even ran my own cider shop in a farmyard where I made my own cider and sold a range of about 40 farm ciders from plastic barrels. Didn’t do too badly, either, although eventually I had to find a proper job. By cider, though, I don’t mean the fizzy factory-made

stuff that pretends to be a lot more authentic than it actually is. Made from frozen concentrate, much of it imported; watered down; sterile-filtered; pasteurised; artificially carbonated – well, millions of people like it, so I must be wrong; but to me cider is a vintage product made from 100% apple juice (or pear juice, in which it’s properly called perry), allowed to ferment slowly over the winter until it stops fizzing, and served in its natural form without being filtered, pasteurised, and carbonated. It’s a very different drink from Magner’s, believe me. One thing people find strange is that it’s still (not flat) rather than fizzy; they’re also intrigued by the incredible range of flavours that come from the different blends of cider apples favoured by each maker. I generally work behind the cider bar at the annual CAMRA beer festivals in St Neots and St Ives, and my experience is that novice drinkers are a bit shocked by their first taste of the real stuff, but that nearly all of them come back for more, try a taster of every different cider we have (normally seven or eight), and go home wishing they could find farmhouse cider in their own locals and supermarkets. You can’t, of course. Some of the ciders you find on the high street are better than others, but even reputable independent makers have had to carbonate and tone down their products to take account of the popular taste for fizz; and genuine farmhouse ciders are too “niche” (horrible word!) for the mainstream retailers. But perhaps it’s a good thing that you can’t: the very elusiveness of real cider, unless you’re lucky enough to live in the west, is a strong part of its mystique. And being the snob that I am, of course, I’d probably stop drinking it if just anybody could get hold of it. by Ted Bruning

DISCOVER AUTUmn ACTIVITY

Mists and mellow

fruitfulness

The end of summer is unmistakably upon us. Cooler, greyer, darker earlier. Heavy dew in the morning. Autumn beckons. The departure of summer can be depressing, but autumn has much to offer. The landscape is beautiful, especially in the more rural areas of the Meon Valley, and with the extra good fortune of having the New Forest on our doorstep, which can be ablaze with yellow, gold and red. Autumn is, of course, the time of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Late blackberries, chestnuts, mushrooms, hazelnuts, rosehips – and sloes (which will make gin in time for Christmas). Fungi are mainly autumnal. In woodlands and forests, you can find a wonderful variety of mushrooms, toadstools, earth balls, puffballs and bracket fungi. But even with experience and modern field guides, identifying them can be tricky and time-consuming. Mycologists (botanists who specialise in fungi) use scientific names as a matter of routine. English names have been coined for some of the better known mushrooms and toadstools: Shaggy Caps (also known as Lawyer’s Wigs), Parasols, the Oyster Mushroom, the Beefsteak Mushroom, the Penny Bun – to say nothing of the Death Cap and the Destroying Angel. In truth, I’ve seldom heard these allegedly popular names used. There are thousands of different species of mushroom and toadstool. A few are edible and delicious. A few are poisonous, some fatal. The great majority lie somewhere in between: not very nice, but not harmful either. If you want to experiment with some of the edible species, there are plenty of books available to help you identify them. But remember that the only really safe way is to identify with certainty anything you’re going to eat. Disregard all those old saws about blackening sixpences or being nibbled by rabbits. Some of the deadliest species can be eaten with impunity by other mammals. I’ve tried a dozen or so species over the years, but for my money there’s little to beat the traditional mushroom family, Agaricus. There’s a variety of closely related species in the family, but the one to watch out for is the so-called Yellow Stainer (Agaricus xanthodermus). Looking like a horse mushroom, this species immediately turns bright yellow when cut or

bruised. It won’t kill you, but it can make you very sick. The family Amanita contains the deadliest of all species, the Death Cap (Amanita phalloides). The tiniest quantity can bring death in appalling agony There is also has the all-white Destroying Angel (Amanita virosa) and that toadstool beloved of elves and goblins, the Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria), with its red cap and white spots. One way to be sure of avoiding these most deadly of toadstools is never to eat anything whose gills are white. But, again, there is only one sensible rule: if you don’t know with certainty what it is, don’t eat it. Perhaps the safest and most environmentally friendly way to enjoy autumn’s fungal feast is to photograph it. Then you can spend as long as you like poring over books trying to decide what you’ve seen. The book I use most is a photographic guide, ‘Mushrooms’ by Roger Phillips (Macmillan Reference, 2006). Of course, you don’t have to struggle to identify fungi. You can always just enjoy their strange beauty. by Stephen Harvey

What Mum Always Said I had jumped in the bath; I was lying in repose, When I noticed a spot on the end of my nose, It was big, it was shiny, so bulbous and red, And it didn’t comply with what Mum always said, She said “When you’re older, your spots disappear, You’ll be left with a skin that’s so perfectly clear”, But I’m now forty eight so that’s clearly not true, As the spot on my nose is now spoiling my view, I’m feeling concerned as this seems to suggest That Mum got it wrong and she doesn’t Know Best ‘Cos if she was right, in the things that she said Then why have I spots growing out of my head? ©Jan Jack’s Perfect Verse 2011 www.perfectverse.co.uk
