023 8026 6388 Hello and Welcome You will probably know that the Olympic torch is coming to Winchester on the 11th July and to Southampton on the 14th July. Being rather cynical, I couldn’t initially see what the fuss is about. But I’ve changed my mind. You see, it’s not just about seeing a flame being carried; the real opportunity is to cheer on the local people who have been chosen to carry the torch, several of whom are from Romsey. When I was researching the details of the route, I went to the London 2012 website where it listed the torch bearers and a little bit of information about them (www. london2012.com/torch-relay/torchbearers). The stories are in equal part inspiring and humbling in that there are so many people out there who seem to achieve so much more than the average person. Sometimes the individuals have personal challenges to deal with and yet still manage to contribute to society and to all around them; and sometimes the torch bearer is just an ordinary person who has devoted so much of their time to help others. Every one of them looks to be deserving of this recognition and honour so I wish them the very best for their day and – please – could someone just switch off the rain for a few hours. It’s a rather packed magazine this month so I’ve had to drop the recycling table. However all the information we include in the magazine, and any late entries of local news or events are all included on our community website: www.DiscoverRomsey. co.uk. Please do keep sending in your community contributions (and suggestions) as we have plenty of space there and can update it almost straight away. DISCOVER HERITAGE
HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE Hurst Castle There is possibly no better time of year to bring to your attention the ancient fort of Hurst Castle than during July and August. The short open ferry ride from Keyhaven to the entrance of the castle is a delight for any age, particularly if you are able to do it on a warm summer’s day. Hurst Castle is one of Henry VIII's Device Forts, built at the end of a long shingle barrier beach at the west end of the Solent to guard the approaches to Portsmouth. Hurst Castle was sited at the narrow entrance to the Solent where the ebb and flow of the tides creates strong currents, putting wouldbe invaders at its mercy. Also known as a Henrician Castle, Hurst was built as part of Henry's chain of coastal defences to protect England during the turbulent times of his reign. In was completed in 1544. Charles I was imprisoned here in 1648 before being taken to London to his trial and execution. During the Napoleonic wars the castle was modernised and in 1870 the enormous armoured wings were constructed. During World War II, Hurst was manned with coastal gun batteries and searchlights. At over a third of a mile long and covering seven acres, Hurst Castle is the
largest coastal fort in the world. The end of the spit is only three-quarters of a mile from the Isle of Wight and the views from the top of the centre keep are spectacular. There are many exhibits and exhibitions as well as old cannons in the grassy centre which children are free to climb on. Friendly dogs on leads are welcome. Visiting there. www.hurstcastle.co.uk Daily from April – September, 10.30 am to 5.30 pm. October Daily – 10.30 am to 4.00 pm Nov to March – weekends only 10.30 am to 4.00 pm. Entry – Adult £4.20 : Child £2.50 : Senior £3.70 (season tickets available) There is a small café in the castle grounds for refreshments or take a picnic to have in the grounds or on the beach outside. To really enhance your visit there is an excellent audio guide which you can download onto a portable music player (e.g. an ipod). It costs just £2 with the proceeds going to the uptake of the fort. hurstcastle.bandcamp.com Ferries: Returns - Adults £5.50; Child £3.00 Singles - Adult £3.50; Child £2.00 First ferry 10am from Keyhaven. Last boat 5:30pm from Hurst. It runs approximately every 20 minutes but more frequently at busy times. The ferry can be taken both ways or park at either Keyhaven or Milfordon-Sea and walk along the shingle beach to or from your starting point (around 2.5 miles). Images with thanks to Lewis Clarke

Do you have some spare time on your hands? Looking for a way to keep those brain cells active? Or know a friend who may be interested ... The Romsey NCT has vacancies on the committee: Secretary (involves taking minutes of meetings - usually held once a month) and Holiday Tots co-ordinator. In the past our Holiday Tots (activities for 0-5 year olds) held during the school holidays have always been well attended. However, as this post is vacant we may not be provide this service in future holidays. This is a great role for an individual or a group of individuals who have a bit of time on their hands, but want a discrete activity to organise. You only need to commit as much time as you want to and the committee can guide you. We would also love to start a weekly Bumps and Babies group but the current committee does not have the capacity to take on additional activities (some members are undertaking more than one role to ensure we can still provide a service to our parents in the Romsey area). If you are interested in joining our committee and filling any of these vacancies, please contact us on enquiries@ romseynct.hampshire.org.uk

Are You Wearing The Wrong Size Bra? Are the shoulder straps digging into your shoulders? Is the back of your bra riding up? Are your breasts bulging out of the cup? Does your bra move when you raise your arms? Is your bra so old it’s losing its elasticity and support? Do you suffer from neck, shoulders and backache? If any of your answers were YES then please read on. It is really important that you have your bra fitting checked regularly - ideally by a bra fitting specialist and at least once a year. You will not remain the same bra size throughout your life. Weight loss, pregnancy, breast-feeding, a new exercise regime, your monthly cycle, contraceptive pill and HRT can all change the shape and size of your breasts as well as your general size.

The effect of the wrong size bra is that it will not provide enough support for your breasts meaning your muscles have to do all the work. The British Chiropractic Association have warned that wearing the wrong bra size could lead to many problems, including back pain, restricted breathing, abrasions, breast pain and poor posture. An ill-fitting bra will almost certainly cause back pain as you get older due to the adverse effects on the shoulders and chest. However the right fitting will mean improved posture, minimised back pain, uplifted breasts and even an improved body shape. by Abbey Chiropractic Clinic

Richard and Valerie Bowyer know their antiques. They have recently returned to this area after over 35 years running an antiques shop where they exported antiques all over the world. But Richard’s original skill – before buying and selling – was restoration, having been involved in that business since the age of 17. He knows his skill is both unusual and sought after. “I have a highly equipped workshop and that takes years to build up. I have clients ask for furniture restoration, repairs, polishing and waxing and that takes a range of tools as well as a lot of experience”. But he tells us it’s not just antiques he’s asked to do. “I receive requests to work on more modern pieces such as Ercol as well as older furniture”. Offering a collection and delivery service, Richard and Valerie expect to travel to their clients so that they can advise on the best treatment for those important heirlooms.

St Swithun’s Day “St. Swithun’s day, if thou dost rain, For forty days it will remain; St. Swithun’s day, if thou be fair, For forty days ‘twill rain na mair.” St Swithun’s Day falls on 15th July and this poem, or the gist of it, has been well known since Elizabethan times. St Swithun, sometimes spelled Swithin, was born around 800AD, and became a monk, then Prior of the Winchester monastery before being made Bishop of Winchester in 852AD. He is now also the Patron Saint of the city. Known for his kindness and piety he was much loved by his flock and whenever he gave an official banquet, he would invite the poor, rather than the rich. He accomplished a number of good works, with records of that era revealing he built many new churches and repaired and restored old ones. He was also a tutor to King Aethelwulf of Wessex and his son Alfred, who later became one of the most celebrated Kings of Britain, Alfred the Great, so Swithun was obviously a very well respected and learned man. Swithun also built a bridge on the east side of Winchester where one of his miracles is said to have taken place. Apparently he restored a basket of eggs belonging to an old woman which had been broken by the workmen. Before his death, Swithun requested that he be buried in a humble grave outside the old cathedral, under the “rain of heaven”, where his grave would also be walked upon. So when he died on 2nd July 862 he was buried under the church pathway according to his wishes, much to the disgust of the clergy, who thought the Bishop should have an exalted tomb within the confines of the Cathedral. In 971AD, Swithun was canonised and on 15th July of that year the monks of Winchester decided to move

Icon of St Swithun in Winchester Cathedral his remains to a magnificent shrine inside the cathedral. Legend has it that on this day there was an enormous rainstorm, breaking a long period of dry weather and this heavy rain continued for a further forty days. Naturally, the monks took this as a sign of ‘divine displeasure’ and left the body where it was for the time being. However the myth detailed in the poem has no basis in reality. According to the records kept by the Meteorological Office since 1861, this prediction has been debunked every single year. There have been just four years where the prediction came close to fruition. In 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1995 St Swithun’s Day was dry and fine in southern England, as were the following 38 days. We’ve suffered enough with rainy weather already in 2012 so let’s hope this year the poem will come true for the good weather rather than the bad.

DISCOVER A PROVERBIAL LIFE...
A Proverbial Life... Nothing ventured, nothing gained A Star Is Born
I have decided that I’m going to be famous. I’m going to be a celeb! I’ll be talked about in gossip columns, ‘papped’ on holiday in Marbella, employed to promote the latest ‘must have’ items, and generally adored by millions. I’ll wear my sunglasses indoors, carry a giant handbag and clutch a bottle of water wherever I go. I may even have my own website where, for a small subscription fee, my fans will be provided with an exclusive insight into my life, philosophy and forthcoming appearances. I’ll definitely Twitter every aspect of my daily existence, and I’ll probably enter into Twitter wars with fellow celebs - I’m looking forward to this. I will, of course, release a fitness DVD. I’m already practising my cover shot poses. For the ‘Before’ I’ll be make-up free, sad faced, slouching and pale as dishwater. In the ‘After’ shot, I’ll be transformed into a smiling, tanned, toned, glamour puss. However, you may have to wait a couple of years for the DVD as I haven’t yet employed a personal trainer (and I still have Haagen Dazs ice cream and toffee cheesecake in the freezer). I’m going to have a spot of Botox in the frown lines between my eyes, and just the teeniest bit of filler injected into my top lip. I’ve booked a spray tan and am considering waist length hair extensions. I may even have my belly button pierced...though this may also have to wait until after the personal trainer has ‘finished’ with me. However, I’m definitely going to have at least one tattoo. No anchors, skulls or loving tributes to my parents but something classy, mysterious, profound and uplifting. It has to be in Latin and fairly short as I’m not good with needles. I’m considering ‘Nosce te ipsum’ (Google it!) at the nape of my neck. Thus, when my hair extensions are swept atop my head

the world will be able to see what a cultured, educated person I am; for there, hidden under my luscious locks, is the ‘real’ me. Or perhaps I should have something in Greek? If I’ve time I may write the first instalment of my autobiography. I’m not quite sure about this yet as there are some aspects of my life that I’d prefer to remain private (the drunken rendition of The Teddy Bear’s Picnic – the shame of it). Nonetheless, I’m willing to provide a frank, honest and open account of my life that will inspire, uplift and leave my fans awestruck at my fortitude in the face of life’s adversities (as long as I have full and final editorial control). I’ll have an agent and a publicist to make bookings, deal with press enquiries and field intrusions into my private life. They will also advise on how best to maximise the opportunities that my celebrity status will present. Oh, and I’d just love to have a Personal Assistant. I’d be the nicest celebrity that they’d ever assisted. I’d make them cups of coffee, feed them cake, fuss over them and tell them to put their feet up if they looked tired... and it would be nice to have someone to chat to in the limo on airport runs. I haven’t quite decided exactly how I’m going to become a celebrity but it will probably involve reality TV. Britain’s Got Talent is likely my best bet; I just have to work out what my particular talent is. I think I may send off for the application forms soon. Don’t forget to vote for me – my celebrity depends on you! by A. O’Brien

DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story Bernard's Unlikely Catch Bernard has been fishing on the canal bank since before breakfast. The grey cloud and drizzle have slowly burnt off, and the sun is now peeping shyly from behind fluffy clouds. Early on, the occasional dog walker strolled past and nodded to him. But if anyone lingered too long, or looked as though they wanted to chat, he would pull his cap down and hunch over his fishing pole. Bernard prefers the peace and quiet. He casts another handful of wriggling maggots into the dull water, but the perch aren’t nibbling today and his keep-net has been empty all morning. In the distance he hears the rattle of a bicycle. He glances along the towpath and sees a young woman peddling towards him. She’s riding an old fashioned butcher’s bike with a basket on the front. In it, a flowery shopping bag bounces up and down, as she awkwardly veers along the bumpy path. “Yes it’s a lovely bike, Marjorie, reconditioned,” she declares loudly. Bernard frowns. There appears to be no sign of Marjorie. He then notices the sunlight glinting off a silver object in her ear. “Daft thing’s talking on the phone and not looking where she’s going,” Bernard thinks.
Just as she’s about to pass him, a mallard takes flight, quacking in a flurry of alarm. It skims the top of her head and disappears over the hedgerow. The woman cries out and swerves, the front wheel of her bike leaving the narrow path with a jolt and veering towards the canal. With complaining brakes she comes to an abrupt stop. Bernard thinks she’s had a lucky escape, but then in dreadful slow motion, the woman and her bike begin to topple sideways. She puts her foot down to stop herself but beneath it is only water. As she falls the woman lets out a long squeal, then both woman and bike slap straight into the canal. Bernard wipes the drops of cold water from his face and stares dumbstruck at the water. A couple of bubbles break the surface and then the woman bursts up, gasping and flapping her arms about wildly. “You can stand up,” Bernard says gruffly. “It’s not deep.” She struggles to her feet, apparently unhurt, but with grimy rivers flowing down her hair and face. She tries to steady herself and makes a grab for the fishing pole. Bernard carefully moves it out of her reach, as after all these things cost money. Then, feeling
more charitable he rises to his feet, and reaches out, offering her his hand. Unsteadily she slips on the slimy canal bottom, flails, then manages to take the outstretched hand. Bernard drags her and the heavy bike out, both scummy with mud and bedraggled in duck weed. The woman sits down squelching on the grass next to Bernard, then spits in a most unladylike fashion into the water. “Well, that was a surprise.” She gasps. She begins to wring the water out of her hair, then freezes as though stung. “My mobile!” She drags her sodden bag out of the bicycle basket, water pouring from it like a sieve. Bernard doesn’t fancy the mobile’s chances, but says nothing. She opens the bag, thrusts her hand inside and then without warning she screams and throws the bag into the air. Bernard is bewildered. He stares at the woman as she points at the bag, opening and closing her mouth. Gingerly, he picks the bag up and looks inside. There, thrashing and twisting, is a beautiful perch. “Well, that’s one way to catch ‘em.” He chuckles. by Jackie Brewster
