023 8026 6388 Hello and Welcome This is the first edition of Discover Romsey you will have received through your door, so you may think this is a new publication. Well it is…sort of. This magazine was formerly called The Romsey Directory and some of you will remember Diane who ran that publication. Diane has moved onto pastures new, and together with my business partner Melanie we’ve taken over and given the magazine a makeover, a name change and an extended distribution. As we already run several other magazines (Chandlers Ford, Southampton, Totton, Hedge End and Meon Valley) we have many years’ experience between us, bringing local news, information, advertiser listings and general interest features to communities. Because we’ve revamped our distribution however, some of you will be seeing this magazine for the first time. Although we’ve worked hard to include lists of local events and groups (towards the back) and useful numbers too, I’m sure there is more out there. For all low cost, charity or free events we are happy to include the details completely without charge. We are however dependent on this being sent to us so why not get some free publicity for your group and send the details in. We’d also love to include more local interest pieces.. Do you have any walks you could write up for us (happy to donate to a charity of your choice to reward your efforts). What about memories of the area in days gone by? Or photographs – it’d be wonderful to be able to show them to both old and new residents. Do you know anybody doing voluntary work or helping those less fortunate in some way? Send it in and together we can deliver a magazine that the area can call its own. Tania PS: Of course using our advertisers is also much appreciated as without them we have no magazine. Needless to say, more advertisers are very welcome!

D-Day Commemorate or Celebrate?
Wednesday 6th June is the 68th anniversary of D-Day, which means very few of the 350,000 Allied soldiers and sailors (and I don’t know how many airmen) who took part are still with us to commemorate one of the most momentous battles of World War II. D-Day, it seems, hasn’t been celebrated as it should. The focus of Britain’s military commemoration has always been Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, when we mourn the dead of both world wars, as we should. But D-Day was a different battle and should be marked in a different way. The courage of the 200,000 naval and 160,000 army personnel who set out for Normandy on that stormy Tuesday is worth celebrating for itself. They faced 59 German divisions, approaching 700,000 men, who had spent four years digging themselves in and converting every beach on the French seaboard into a death-trap of landmines, barbed wire, tank traps, machine guns and artillery. To the soldiers, Operation Neptune must have seemed like an enormous gamble on their life. Of course, the odds weren’t as long as seemed. Those 59 German divisions were scattered over France, Belgium, and the Netherlands and the prolonged bombing of their communication lines made rallying quickly impossible. German high command was expecting an invasion to be launched in the obvious place, the Pas de Calais. A huge army remained there long after it was clear that the Normandy landings were no mere diversion. Many of the thin cordons of troops along the Norman coast were conscripted Poles and Russians, never trusted by the Germans (rightly, as most of them deserted quickly and many Poles turned up at Arnhem on the Allied side). The German forces had been rendered negligible by a long campaign of attrition and thanks to Hitler’s paranoia and indecision, command of the ground forces was divided and virtually paralysed. For their part, the Allied commanders enjoyed

overwhelming air and naval superiority. They had gained valuable experience of amphibious operations in North Africa and Italy, and had dedicated two years to planning and reconnaissance. They had the attacker’s advantage, concentrating their armies, while forcing the defenders to disperse theirs. Eisenhower, Montgomery and the rest had good reason to feel nervous, but confident. It can’t have seemed like that to the men in the landing craft, though. Their prospects of victory as an army might have been better than fair, but so were their personal prospects of injury or death. In the event, the mainly British, American, and Canadian invaders fared surprisingly well. The next two months were an arduous slogging match, but “only” 4,400 Allied lives were claimed out of 150,000 – 4,400 too many, but at 3%, rather better than the Somme. Indeed to a soldier of the Red Army, with memories of Stalingrad and Kharkov (the largest tank-battle in history), D-Day must have seemed not much more than a skirmish. But D-Day is important for more than just its scale and what it achieved towards the downfall of Nazi Germany. D-Day should stand as a beacon for democracy against totalitarianism. Totalitarian regimes may appear strong, but they are hollow. Willing confederations of free men and women uniting their energy, intelligence and courage towards a common goal are always stronger than a people that only obey orders. Tuesday 6th June 1944 proved that, and we should celebrate the day not with the wreaths and silences of Remembrance Sunday but with fireworks and a joyous chorale. We could call it Democracy Day. by Ted Bruning

DISCOVER MOTORING
Nissan Juke R at Goodwood
I must admit if I had a nice long drive in front of my house, like Lord March, I wouldn’t get much work done. The temptation to hoon up and down and scare the milkman in anything with an engine would just be too great to resist. Unfortunately, I don’t have that problem, so an invite to apply some rubber to the Goodwood estate’s well wheel-trodden hill climb is always welcome. My invite came for the media day for Goodwood’s 2012 motoring events – the Festival of Speed and the Revival. The day is a chance for Lord March to ramp up the excitement surrounding the two events and a good opportunity for the media to get behind the wheel of some new metal from the supporting manufacturers. Fortunately I was looking forward to one helluva ride. Nissan had offered a last minute spin up the hill in one of only two Juke Rs in the world. For those of you that aren’t in the know, this is basically the love child of a Juke / GT-R one night stand – and the right genes made it across into the sibling. Under the matt black Juke bodywork is the running gear and engine from the GT-R. The 3.8-litre, 485bhp twin turbo charged engine has been squeezed into the Juke’s bodywork, the four-wheel drive carried across and it has the performance to match. Foot to the floor and 60mph arrives in around three seconds. The mad project was conceived as a marketing exercise by Nissan GB’s former MD Paul Willcox who, when he took up his new post in Europe,
gave it the green light. Costing £250,000 each, the pair were designed and built in the UK by RML – one left-hand and one right-hand drive. The latter is for exclusive use in the UK. So what’s it like to drive? Well, the 1.16-mile Lord March drive was never going to be long enough to get a real feel for this amazing car, but first impressions were staggering. The Juke R handles all that power remarkably well, transferring it into forward thrust with no drama, much like the bigger GT-R does. There was just enough time to savour the whoosh of the turbos on the start straight as the hay bales and trees quickly melted into a summery soup of colour. The first corner is a tight right hander and an overzealous prod on the cold brakes soon made me realise I could have carried 20mph more through the bend. In front of the house, I managed five seconds-ish of full throttle madness and the Juke R’s turn of pace staggered – 120mph was indicated on the digital readout (my passenger reliably informed me). Flint wall safely passed without grazes, the final section of the run allowed a little more confidence. It was soon clear that although hand-built, the Juke R is a very competent and polished piece of kit. It reminds me of a Renault 5 GT Turbo – but turned all the way up to 11. It’s just a shame these two marketing models are all we’re ever likely to see. There’s very little chance we’ll ever get a production run model. The cost and build time would make it very difficult to justify – especially when a GT-R can be had for circa £70k. Still, as drives up garden paths go, this Nissan-powered excursion will be remembered as a very special one. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Keeping
Physically & Mentally Agile
Keeping your body and mind stimulated will help you to get so much more out of your later years The changes to life that retirement brings can be quite a shock, even if you have been looking forward to it. Losing the focus of going to work each day can be hard and it is easy to slip into a sedentary lifestyle. But research shows that those who keep active both physically and mentally enjoy a healthier later life. So what can you do? The benefits of activity Regular exercise has a huge number of benefits: it strengthens your muscles, aiding mobility and reducing the risk of falls and conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and osteoporosis (brittle bones). It also helps to reduce the risk of other conditions, such as diabetes and stroke. It improves coordination and balance and encourages a healthy appetite, regular bowel movements and means you are more likely to sleep well at night. It also stimulates the brain, so that you’re less likely to suffer from stress or depression. Small amounts of regular exercise or activity is better for you than a big burst of energy one day and then nothing for the rest of the week. And exercise doesn’t have to mean going to the gym - there is plenty you can do at home and while you’re out and about to keep active. At home you can tackle the garden - just a little weeding or pruning is using your muscles and keeping them flexible; and even housework is great for strengthening muscles. Try an exercise DVD at home - and ask a friend to join you to make it more fun. Walk as much as you can each day - to the local shops or library and take up

some social activities that will encourage you to meet other people as well as exercise, such as dance or arts & craft classes; or keep fit for the over 50s. And, if you have lots of energy, you could even try Zumba, which is fast-paced and fun. All these activities will keep your muscles moving and supple. Age UK (formerly Age Concern) has a nationwide programme, Fit as a Fiddle, which supports people over 50 with physical activity, healthy eating and mental wellbeing. Find out more at www.fitasafiddle. org.uk Keeping mentally stimulated Studies show that the more you use your brain the more mentally active you’ll remain. As well as slowing down memory loss (although you’re still likely to forget things!), you can also reduce the chances of conditions such as Alzheimer’s. As with physical exercise, keeping mentally active can also help to reduce stress and depression. There are many activities that can help to keep your brain mentally agile. At home you can tackle crossword puzzles, Sudoku or chess. Maybe now is the time to start reading all those books you never had time for when you were working? It is also possible to ‘train’ your mind by using trigger words to jog your memory. Using sticky notes on the fridge will help to remind you of what you need to do that day. Joining groups with common interests will encourage you to meet and interact with new people as well as keeping your mind occupied. Try bingo; learn a new language or how to use a computer; or enrol on a cookery course. Your local council or library will have information on classes and activities for older people - just take your pick! www.ageuk.org.uk

DISCOVER HERITAGE
HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE The Supercar Made in Eastleigh ‘Supercar’ and ‘Eastleigh’ are words that don’t naturally seem to belong in the same sentence. The Lord Nelson class locomotives made in Eastleigh – of course. The supercar made in Maranello – indeed. But supercar and Eastleigh? Some mistake surely? No, no mistake. In 1960 John Gordon and Jim Keeble showed a prototype called the Gordon GT at that year’s Geneva Motor Show. Reviewing the prototype in October 1960, Autocar

magazine wrote, “This journal looks back on the most electrifying vehicle that it has ever tested.” But it would be another three years before their masterpiece came into production in a hangar at Eastleigh airport. Three years of struggling with all the difficulties that can beset a small team trying to produce an enormously ambitious new car on a miniscule budget. Their car, renamed the Gordon-Keeble, was heralded by a full-page advertisement in the 13

March 1964 issue of Autocar magazine. The advertisement took the form of a questionnaire. Some of the questions posed by the advert were: Do you like driving really fast? Do you like to have a car which all eyes admire? Do you like, on occasion, to amble along any old how in top gear? Do you like, on occasion, to make full use of a superb four-speed gearbox and go like a scalded cat? And Can you beg, borrow or steal £2,800? The car was a full four-seater with a decent sized boot. It
DISCOVER HERITAGE was powered by a 5.4-litre V8 engine, the one used in the Chevrolet Corvette, mounted in a space-frame chassis, and clothed in a stunningly beautiful fibreglass body. The body design was the work of a new recruit to Bertone’s famous automotive styling studio in Turin, a young lad called Giorgetto Giugiaro. Car enthusiasts will have heard of him! It was only his second design assignment for Bertone. Half a century later, the young Giugiaro’s design still looks simply stunning and attracts admiration wherever the car is seen. As well as looking great, the car’s performance was electrifying (0-60 in about 6 seconds) and it handled well. The first production car was assembled in late 1963 and shown to the press at London’s Savoy hotel in December of that year. It was now called the GordonKeeble GK1. Every production car was tested by engineer Jim Keeble himself on a circuit of Hampshire roads that included Winchester, Sutton Scotney and the old Winchester by-pass. In his invaluable history of the GordonKeeble, author Charles
Giles tells us that “any car which would not exceed an indicated 140 mph would be rejected and returned to the factory for further attention.” In an attempt to undercut better known makes, the car was initially priced at £2,798, a figure that Jim Keeble always thought was too low. The price was later increased to £3,626-11s-3d, but it was still too low, and the company was soon in trouble financially. Component supply problems followed and the company went into receivership in 1965. The GordonKeeble’s emblem is a tortoise, which has always prompted curiosity. The accepted explanation is that during a publicity photo shoot a tortoise walked across in front of the car. Someone picked the creature up and
placed it on the bonnet of the car, whereupon the tortoise urinated, stripping some of the paintwork. The owners must have felt the incident to be an omen. In July 2010, I went to Eastleigh’s central recreation ground to see a group of Gordon-Keeble cars parade at the end of a 100-mile rally run by the Gordon-Keeble Owners’ Club. The event was part of a celebration of 100 years flying from Eastleigh airport, where the cars were assembled. Of the 100 cars produced, about 90 still survive, largely thanks to that rust-free fibreglass body. They still look fabulous. Most, of course, are in expensively exquisite condition. But it is not a car for today’s petrol prices. The Autocar road test returned a figure of 14.5 mpg overall. Those wonderful Lord Nelson class locomotives may yet enjoy a Second Coming. by Stephen Harvey

DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story Bernard's Unlikely Catch Bernard has been fishing on the canal bank since before breakfast. The grey cloud and drizzle have slowly burnt off, and the sun is now peeping shyly from behind fluffy clouds. Early on, the occasional dog walker strolled past and nodded to him. But if anyone lingered too long, or looked as though they wanted to chat, he would pull his cap down and hunch over his fishing pole. Bernard prefers the peace and quiet. He casts another handful of wriggling maggots into the dull water, but the perch aren’t nibbling today and his keep-net has been empty all morning. In the distance he hears the rattle of a bicycle. He glances along the towpath and sees a young woman peddling towards him. She’s riding an old fashioned butcher’s bike with a basket on the front. In it, a flowery shopping bag bounces up and down, as she awkwardly veers along the bumpy path. “Yes it’s a lovely bike, Marjorie, reconditioned,” she declares loudly. Bernard frowns. There appears to be no sign of Marjorie. He then notices the sunlight glinting off a silver object in her ear. “Daft thing’s talking on the phone and not looking where she’s going,” Bernard thinks.
Just as she’s about to pass him, a mallard takes flight, quacking in a flurry of alarm. It skims the top of her head and disappears over the hedgerow. The woman cries out and swerves, the front wheel of her bike leaving the narrow path with a jolt and veering towards the canal. With complaining brakes she comes to an abrupt stop. Bernard thinks she’s had a lucky escape, but then in dreadful slow motion, the woman and her bike begin to topple sideways. She puts her foot down to stop herself but beneath it is only water. As she falls the woman lets out a long squeal, then both woman and bike slap straight into the canal. Bernard wipes the drops of cold water from his face and stares dumbstruck at the water. A couple of bubbles break the surface and then the woman bursts up, gasping and flapping her arms about wildly. “You can stand up,” Bernard says gruffly. “It’s not deep.” She struggles to her feet, apparently unhurt, but with grimy rivers flowing down her hair and face. She tries to steady herself and makes a grab for the fishing pole. Bernard carefully moves it out of her reach, as after all these things cost money. Then, feeling
more charitable he rises to his feet, and reaches out, offering her his hand. Unsteadily she slips on the slimy canal bottom, flails, then manages to take the outstretched hand. Bernard drags her and the heavy bike out, both scummy with mud and bedraggled in duck weed. The woman sits down squelching on the grass next to Bernard, then spits in a most unladylike fashion into the water. “Well, that was a surprise.” She gasps. She begins to wring the water out of her hair, then freezes as though stung. “My mobile!” She drags her sodden bag out of the bicycle basket, water pouring from it like a sieve. Bernard doesn’t fancy the mobile’s chances, but says nothing. She opens the bag, thrusts her hand inside and then without warning she screams and throws the bag into the air. Bernard is bewildered. He stares at the woman as she points at the bag, opening and closing her mouth. Gingerly, he picks the bag up and looks inside. There, thrashing and twisting, is a beautiful perch. “Well, that’s one way to catch ‘em.” He chuckles. by Jackie Brewster

Is Your Wallet A Pain In The Back? Are you a man who carries a fat wallet in their back pocket and sit on it all day either when driving or at the office? If you are, then please take note. Men who sit down all day with their wallets in their back trouser pocket risk damaging key nerves in their lower back. This condition is medically known as piriformis syndrome, or more popularly known as fat-wallet syndrome or hip-pocket syndrome. The wallet pressing on the nerves can give rise to sciatica, which triggers this condition. This can lead to pain or numbness down the leg, ankle or foot. Walking and lying down can become painful. Some people can only find relief when they are standing still. Furthermore,

keeping your wallet in your back pocket is not good for the health of your lower back and can affect your spinal alignment. Unconsciously you may raise your hip to ease the discomfort on the side you carry your wallet, which will end up with spinal misalignment. The simple solution is to remove the wallet from your back pocket and carry it elsewhere, like your jacket pocket or front pocket instead. Using an ultra-thin wallet may be helpful and finally removing all unnecessary items from the wallet will be most beneficial. This simple change may be enough to stop the pain in mild cases. Others, however, will require expert treatment. by Abbey Chiropractic Clinic

THE ROMSEY SPORTS FAIR 29 July Romsey Sports Centre This event held at Romsey Sports Centre, promotes the array of sports clubs in and around Romsey, offering a great day out for those interested in being more active, more often. 100 YEARS OF TUDOR HOUSE 29 July, 10am to 5pm Tudor House & Garden, Southampton Tudor House first opened its doors as a public museum in 1912. To celebrate, entrance will be the 1912 price of just 6p per person! The Southampton Archaeology Team will be offering a range of activities. Please bring any finds you have found for identification. (We are not able to carry out valuations).
