DISCOVER SOUTHAMPTON

Page 1

Dear Readers You may already know that the Olympic torch is coming to Southampton on 14th July. Being rather cynical, I couldn’t initially see what the fuss is about. But I’ve changed my mind. You see, it’s not just about seeing a flame being carried; the real opportunity is to cheer on the local people who have been chosen to carry the torch. When I Googled the details of the (page 4) the London 2012 website listed the torch bearers and a little bit of Our Torchbearers route information about them (www.london2012.com/torch-relay/torchbearers). We have Jim Dowdall, 86, Southampton eighteen and I’ve highlighted only three but all are equally worthy of the honour. Naomi Pike, 25, Southampton Hilary Corrick from Southampton. Hilary has worked tirelessly as a social worker for Bruce Elkins, 53, Totton many years and since retiring still works in social care as a consultant. A keen runner, Chris Goodwin, 41, Southampton she is an inspiration and a wonderful role model. Christopher Russell, 18, Romsey Heather lambert from Totton, a local foster carer and has dedicated her life to looking Freda Bussey, 61, Worthing after vulnerable children. Gill Rose, 43, Southampton Jim dowdall, 86 from Thornhill, who suffered a mini stroke at the age of 71 and part of Hilary Corrick, 68, Southampton his recovery was to challenge himself to run the London Marathon at 73. Since then, Ian Chalk, 47, Romsey he’s completed eight marathons, raising nearly £16,000 for a local cancer charity and Jim Whitmarsh, 52, Southampton has been awarded an MBE. Kyle Jones,11, Southampton Everyone’s stories are in equal part inspiring and humbling in that there are so many Theodore Oben, 42, Nairobi people out there who seem to achieve so much more than the average person. Chris Ogborne, 12, New Milton Sometimes the individuals have personal challenges to deal with and yet still manage Gus Mckechnie, 36, Southampton to contribute to society and to all around them; and sometimes the torch bearer is just Heather Lambert, 48, Totton an ordinary person who has devoted so much of their time to help others. Every one Kwesi James, 12, Portsmouth of them looks to be deserving of this recognition and honour so I wish them the very Roger Sherliker, 53, Southampton best for their day and – please – could someone just switch off the rain for a few hours! Mike Godwin, 51, Southampton To follow on this theme, if you know of a special person who deserves recognition, let me know and I’ll get their permission to feature them as a “local star”. As always, please send in details of local events, local charities and anything of interest you think others in your community would like to know about. Next issue: September 2012 Ps: if you are a business the website you want is www.discovermagazines.co.uk/advertising.

Do you pay Nursing Home Fees? “There is nothing distressing more after losing a parent than finding out that their savings did not need to be spent on their care home fees. The system has let many people down very badly indeed.” This is the view of Jonathan Anderson, an experienced Will and Trust Specialist and founder of www.recovernursinghomefees.com.

acknowledged that this has been unfair and have set aside a billion pounds in compensation.“ Compensation claims are open to anyone who was/is paying for residential care from April 2004 but there are deadlines to register cases, the earliest of which is September 2012. “If you think that the fee assessment was not properly handled then it’s imperative to start the ball rolling now” Jonathan told us. “Our no win no fee policy means there is absolutely no barrier to anyone starting the process.”

Jonathan is currently progressing dozens of compensation assessments in the south of England where the lack of standardised criteria used in assessing who pays Nursing Home fees has potentially left families tens of thousands of pounds worse off.

Once a case is accepted, a home visit prepares all the paperwork and all cases are submitted with an expert medical report produced by Senior Medical Practioners with experience of elderly care.

“Unfortunately differences in assessment between different UK Health Authorities has created a postcode lottery in whether the Primary Care Trust (PCT) or individuals have had to pay for care” Jonathan explained. “The Government has

“Compensation is not going to bring back a relative who has sadly passed away but helping to recover a financial legacy that was lost due to poor PCT practices is very important for the families left behind.” Editorial supplied by recovernursinghomefees.com

Are You Wearing

The Wrong Size Bra? Are the shoulder straps digging into your shoulders? Is the back of your bra riding up? Are your breasts bulging out of the cup? Does your bra move when you raise your arms? Is your bra so old it’s losing its elasticity and support? Do you suffer from neck, shoulders and backache? If any of your answers were YeS then please read on. It is really important that you have your bra fitting checked regularly ideally by a bra fitting specialist and at least once a year. You will not remain the same bra size throughout your life. Weight loss, pregnancy, breast-feeding, a new exercise regime, your monthly cycle, contraceptive pill and HRT can all change the shape and size of your breasts as well as your general size. The effect of the wrong size bra is that it will not provide enough support for your breasts meaning your muscles have to do all the work. The British Chiropractic Association have warned that wearing the wrong bra size could lead to many problems, including back pain, restricted breathing, abrasions, breast pain and poor posture. An ill-fitting bra will almost certainly cause back pain as you get older due to the adverse effects on the shoulders and chest. However the right fitting will mean improved posture, minimised back pain, uplifted breasts and even an improved body shape. Editorial supplied by City Chiropractic Clinic
