Discover May 2012
Hello I have been publishing this magazine for nearly six years now. It was originally called The North Southampton Directory and only reached 8,000 homes which soon turned into The Southampton Directory when it expanded to cover 45, 000 homes as far as Hythe in the west and Botley in the east. Bigger isn’t always best though. This is a local community magazine and to keep it local with local advertisers and local information I’ve re-organised the distribution so there are now three separate editions of Discover southampton (onto that in a minute); Totton, central (this one) and Bitterne. By focussing a magazine on each area I can provide a more local magazine. I know there’s plenty happening in Southampton that I don’t know about. If I’m not informed or I can’t find it on the internet because I wouldn’t know to look for it I can’t print it! School fairs, church fetes, local drama groups, charity events and so much more; this is your chance to promote any activity free of charge and share news, views and what’s on with your community. If you email me on melanie@discovermagazines.co.uk with a picture or logo and text I will happily try to find space to feature it. Why Discover?
“Help, I’m not psychic!”
I renamed The Southampton Directory because I’ve increased the number of titles I publish and decided to rebrand them all under the same banner. Within the Discover Magazines group we have Discover Southampton, Discover Hedge End, Discover Chandlers Ford, Discover Meon Valley and the newest addition, Discover Romsey. So despite being the largest publisher in this area with a print run of 98,000 copies, each title is still local and focused on your community. and I’d like to keep it that way as the change has been somewhat challenging! Welcome to new readers in Nursling and Rownhams. I hope you enjoy receiving the magazine every other month and if you know anyone who would like to be a distributor please let me know. Until July, then... and good luck to all our youngsters sitting exams in May and June. Best wishes,

Patrick lichfield : The Polaroids a stunning exhibition of photographs by Patrick Lichfield is being displayed at Mottisfont from the 19th May to the 1st July, offering a unique insight into his glamorous world. It presents fascinating montages of the Polaroids he took on every shoot, on display for the first time. It also presents a striking group of Lichfield’s iconic photographs of the royal, the rich and the famous, including a young Bob Geldof, Sir John Gielgud and Joanna Lumley. Particularly striking – and timely in this Diamond Jubilee year – is Lichfield’s double portrait of HRH The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Lichfield started out in the 1960s as a photographer’s assistant on £3 a week, but over the next four decades he gained international renown, contributing numerous now-famous photographs to
newspapers, prestigious magazines and private collections. Though he was the 5th Earl of Lichfield and cousin to the Queen, in his professional life he was known simply as Patrick Lichfield. Over the years – 1971 to 2004 - Lichfield produced thousands of Polaroids – preparatory ‘snaps’ of enormous interest and insight into his sitters. Lichfield once said, “Polaroids tell us so much of that moment in time, and my own diaries – if ever I wrote them – would contain dozens of them.” Now visitors can gaze into his dazzling world and enjoy this unique record of his illustrious career.

CHARITY OF THE MONTH
WhaT is roTarY? Our members are men and women of all ages who are business and professional people or community leaders, keen to utilise their skills and resources to help others. In Great Britain and Ireland alone, there are more than 55,000 Rotarians in 1,850 clubs. Each member enjoys the opportunity to give something back to communities near and far, learn new skills, network with other business people and have a huge amount of fun. Rotary runs countless humanitarian projects locally, nationally and internationally, and also partners with many charities worldwide. By combining their skills and resources, our members are able to make a real contribution to the lives of others. Members volunteer their time to serve their local communities, through activities such as supporting community events and running projects to promote the achievements of young people. Clubs also raise thousands of pounds for community projects and local charities.
Because Rotary is found in 200 countries and geographical regions, we are in the unique position to be able to reach people in need all over the world, from running life-changing projects in developing countries to making an immediate response to disaster-hit regions. Within the local community rotary club of southampton carries out a range of different activities with the aim of helping to improve the quality of life. Projects include: Kids Out day – an annual day out for disadvantaged children; youth projects (such as young Musician) – encouraging young people’s talents; Christmas Collections; Solent Gardeners Fayre; Theatre trip for the elderly; Support for local schools – e.g literacy support in a homework club; Shoe boxes – to be sent abroad to children at Christmas. Internationally Rotary’s major project is polio eradication, so far Great Britain and Ireland clubs have donated £10.5 million to related initiatives.
