01489 660022 This month’s edition of Discover Meon Valley has a special focus on an event which is overwhelmingly tragic, yet a source of fascination which has lasted 100 years. I am talking of course of the sinking of RMS Titanic on the 15th April 1912. She sailed from Southampton and four out of every five crew members were from the city and surrounding towns, so we can only imagine what a devastating effect the events of that night must have had on the communities in the area. In commemoration, Southampton is hosting a whole program of events from entertaining to reflective. On pages 10 and 11 we have a feature on what it is that makes Titanic such an enduring source of interest and on pages 30 and 43 we have listed many of the events that you can take part in during April. We have had some super feedback from the Meon Valley residents since expanding our distribution at the start of the year. It’s exciting to hear of the local activities taking place over the next few months, the first of which is the Wickham Beer Festival on Saturday 14th April. Discover Meon Valley are sponsoring a barrel of beer, which my eager husband initially interpreted as an obligation to drinks its contents. I set him straight – we just have our name on it, and the cost goes towards the fund-raising efforts – but he was still enthused enough to put the date in the family diary.A little further ahead, but don’t forget to put the Bishop’s Waltham Festival in your own diaries on the 11th to the 27th May (www. bishopswalthamfestival.co.uk). Counselling with Julie Chivers: We have all lost something. Hopefully for most of us it is generally a case of losing our car keys, or the TV Licence or maybe the remote control. And how frustrating! But it is generally manageable, and the items are generally found or at least replaceable. However, loss can have life changing consequences for some of us. Frustration gives way to intolerable pain, feelings of devastation, unsettlement, hopelessness and loneliness, just for starters. This loss leaves us with feelings that are much more unmanageable, and often there is just no replacing what we have lost. Losing loved ones who have died, or losing loved ones to an illness such as dementia is devastating. Losing a pet who has been our soul mate and confidant is heart breaking.

Losing a job is frightening. Grief and mourning are natural processes following such loss, but this can be a lonely journey. There is no fixed time frame for this process and everyone we have for support have their own lives, and so they should, but the fact the world carries on can feel so unfair - and that is where counselling can help. As a counsellor I can sit alongside during this journey, providing somewhere to talk about the feelings and fear, until a less painful future becomes clearer. Titanic: Read all About it

It is now 100 years since RMS Titanic disappeared beneath the waves of the Atlantic. Yet public fascination with the story is as strong as ever. Why should this be? Even as you flick through the pages of this magazines, that familiar image catches your eye; the stately lines of that fourfunnelled ocean liner and that single evocative word…Titanic. It’s not as if there is any shortage, unfortunately, of shipwrecks, before or after this catastrophe. Titanic was not even the ‘largest’ ship in the world really. This title had already gone to the first of her sister ships, the lesser-known Olympic, which had made its maiden voyage on 14 June 1911. Their dimensions were the same, with a length of 882 feet 9 inches and a beam of 92 feet 6 inches. But the Titanic’s displacement tonnage was the greater as a result of internal changes to the original design, so she succeeded her sister on a technicality. The third and last ship in the ‘Olympic class’, Britannic, was 21 feet longer. This ship struck a German mine in the Aegean Sea on 21st November 1916 and sank in an almost identical fashion to the Titanic, going down bow first as the forward compartments flooded. Watertight doors should have prevented this happening, but film of the wreck, shot in 2004, shows that the doors had been left wide open, probably to provide relief from the scorching heat. Britannic had been designed for

service in the somewhat cooler climes of the North Atlantic but had been requisitioned by the Admiralty for use as a hospital ship. At the time of the collision she was bound for the Greek island of Kea to collect 3,000 casualties so mercifully there were no passengers on board. There were, however, 30 fatalities, caused when two prematurely-launched lifeboats were sucked into the blades of a propeller. One of the survivors of the wrecked lifeboats was nurse Violet Jessop. This lady had also survived the Titanic’s sinking and been on board the Olympic when it collided with the cruiser HMS Hawke on 20 September 1911. I don’t know what became of her after the sinking of Britannic but I think if I’d had anything to do with it I would have banned her from further travel with the White Star Line. Revenge for Britannic was exacted on 18th May 1918, when Captain Hays, while commanding the first (and last remaining) of the three ships, Olympic, succeeded in ramming and sinking a U-boat, the only recorded case of a merchant ship sinking an enemy warship during World War I. In 1933 Olympic collided with the Nantucket Lightship, killing seven of the lightship’s crew; yet

DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE none of these events is so indelibly written into history as the fate of RMS Titanic. No doubt the fact that the Titanic sank on her maiden voyage, coupled with the ballyhoo of that occasion, the huge loss of life and the subsequent shock waves which reverberated around the world served as a foundation for the ongoing intrigue. Another factor could be the White Star Line’s official description of the ships’ construction, which concluded ‘… practically making the vessel unsinkable.’ These five words were seized upon, edited, embellished and misquoted a thousand times after the sinking, giving the impression of it being a challenge to the Almighty; the very name of the ship an arrogant suggestion of a rival god. This angle was exploited in the James Cameron film Titanic, when Rose’s fiancee, Cal, declares “God Himself could not sink this ship”. Preoccupation with the disaster was immediate, with the first of many films portraying the catastrophic events of that night, In Nacht und Eis, being released in Germany that same year. It has also been the subject of dozens of books, articles and songs, an example of how this selfperpetuating fascination feeds upon itself to become something other than the sum of its parts, a separate entity. There is Titanic the ship – the wreck – the historical event. And there is Titanic the phenomenon. Long after the wreck is nothing more than a stain on the floor of the ocean this legend will live on, a nebulous memorial to the 1,517 men, women and children who perished in the freezing waters of the Atlantic on the 15th April 1912. But what would those victims have thought of this remembrance? Would they feel it a fitting tribute? Or do their ghosts look down with disdain, or disgust, at the morbid vultures picking over the heartbreaking remains of their lives. In conclusion it has to be said that there is no conclusion; as memories die they are replaced with memories of memories. And stories of stories. But probably not another film; how could anything follow the 1997 blockbuster? This film has grossed in excess of $2 billion, making the production cost of $200 million seem insignificant in comparison – a drop in the ocean. By Patrick Cousins

Third class passengers were locked below deck There was no attempt to keep third class passengers from getting into the lifeboats, or to divide potential survivors by class in any way. The reason relatively few ‘steerage’ passengers survived was partly due to being so far from the deck, and partly because many didn’t speak English and wouldn’t have understood the evacuation instructions.

The high number of casualties was due to insufficient lifeboats Whilst it’s true that there were only enough lifeboat spaces for around one third of the passengers, not all the lifeboats were launched. Panic and interference from passengers coupled with not enough skilled manpower, meant time ran out anyway and the last two lifeboats floated off the sinking ship. Indeed the first lifeboat that was launched had a capacity of 50 people but had just 12 passengers onboard.

Community Responders are called to 999 calls where the ability to reach a patient quickly and administer basic lifesaving support until the Ambulance Paramedic arrives is vital. Typically this is where someone has suffered a cardiac arrest, a stroke or some other life-threatening medical emergency. RMS Titanic

Southampton Remembers

At 11.40pm on the 14th April 1912 RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic, near Newfoundland. At 12.20am on the 15th April the crew was given the order to send away women and children in the ship’s lifeboats. Titanic sank at 2.20am on the 15th April. Of the 1523 people who lost their lives 549 came from Southampton. The disaster, which made headlines across the world, had a devastating effect on the people of the city. 100 years after the tragic sinking of the White Star liner RMS Titanic, the city recognises our unique link to the tragedy. The disaster struck at the heart of Southampton as hundreds of city residents went down with the fated vessel. Events across the city give you the chance to connect with the voices of the past that echo through history, telling the story of that disastrous night.

Easter It’s been a long road from the glory of Jesus Christ’s death resurrection – the central miracle of the Christian faith – to gorging on chocolate. And it’s a road that those of a philosophical bent might liken to the descent of Western civilisation into gluttonous consumerism. But leaving such considerations aside, how did it happen? Let’s start with the word itself, Easter. We have it on the word of the Venerable Bede, writing in the very early 8th century, that “Eostre” is derived from “Eostremonath”, the month in which pagan Saxons celebrated the festival of the goddess Eostre. It’s a simple explanation, and one with which with which scholars of philology have had endless fun ever since – some even denying that there ever was a goddess Eostre and that Bede (uncharacteristically) made the whole thing up. But “eostre” is cognate with “öster”, the German for east, and is therefore associated with sunrise and hence spring, so Bede’s explanation at least has context on its side. Indeed the feast is only called “Easter” in Germanic countries: in France it’s called “Pâques”, a variation on the Jewish spring festival Pesach, and other Latin countries use names of the same derivation. Fascinating stuff, but it doesn’t get us much closer to the chocolate. And the answer is eggs. Eggs have been associated with spring since... well, since birds started laying them in spring. There are Persian wall-paintings of eggs being given as gifts from 2,500 years ago; the tradition survived the country’s conversion to Islam

and persists to this day. In Egypt, another Islamic country, there is a seasonal tradition of egg decorating of unknown antiquity; in eastern Orthodox countries they paint eggs red (for Christ’s blood) and green (for returning spring); in England and North-Western Europe there is a tradition of rolling coloured eggs down hills at Eastertime, echoing the rolling away of the stone from the Holy Sepulchre; in America the White House puts on an annual display of decorated eggs from every state of the union, and favoured children (how are they selected?) are invited to a spot of egg-rolling on the White House lawn. Egg decoration seems to have evolved into making eggs out of solid chocolate in France or Germany in the early 19th century, and the first Easter egg in England came from Cadbury’s in 1842. These eggs can hardly have been for the mass market since the chocolate of the time was very expensive and also very bitter. Finer, less harsh, and less expensive chocolate was made possible by more sophisticated processing equipment in the later 19th century, and Cadbury’s produced its first hollow egg (filled with sweets) in 1875. The first milk chocolate Easter egg followed exactly 30 years later and... well, what more do we need to know? Except that Easter eggs sell for a far higher price per gram than the slab chocolate of which they’re made, and as they’ll keep almost indefinitely any left unsold can simply go into cold store until next year – at which time next year’s prices can be charged for last year’s stock. As I said, it’s all a very long way from the Mount of Olives! Well, that’s just about it for Easter – except that I forgot Easter bunnies. Well, springtime, fertility, rabbits, breeding, etcetera... need I say more? Oh, and Easter bonnets. Sorry, no idea. By Ted Bruning

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE Strange Pub Names in Southern Hampshire The Red Lion is said to be the commonest pub name in England. Hard on its heels are the Royal Oak, the White Hart and the Rose and Crown. But what of those strange pub names, some of them unique, that you encounter from time to time? We have our fair share in southern Hampshire. Bitterne and Sholing offer the Humble Plumb and the Spike Islander. My visit to the Humble Plumb in Commercial Street in Bitterne revealed a spick-and-span and friendly pub. Originally the pub in Commercial Street was The Commercial Inn but that was demolished and a few years later the new pub was built a little further along the road by a local building company. They had a competition to name it and settled on the Humble Plumb because of their own

humble beginnings although why ‘Plumb’ rather than plumber is unknown. The Spike Islander, in Sholing, refers to an early nickname for the Sholing area, Spike Island. There are various, disputed explanations for the nickname. One refers to the spiky gorse that once covered the area; another refers to the settlements of gypsies (‘pikeys’) around Woolston, Weston and Netley; yet another suggests the name is derived from the spike shaped peninsula formed by the rivers Itchen and Hamble. No Red Lions or White Harts for the village of Horton Heath, which seems to be making a speciality of unusual names. The pub known for many years as the Rising Sun at some point became the Lapstone, possibly the only pub in England with that name. The dip in which the pub lies has long been known as Lapstone Bottom. According to my dictionaries, a lapstone is a stone held in a cobbler’s lap when beating leather to make shoes. But the pub’s sign suggests that the name refers to a tree stump on which cattle stood to drink from a stream. Only a mile or so down the road from the Lapstone is a pub called the Brigadier Gerard, once the Old New Inn. Readers of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will know that Brigadier Gerard was a comic character in a series of adventure stories. But the pub is named after the famous and much loved racehorse of the early 1970s. Brigadier Gerard won 17 of his 18 races, always ridden by Joe Mercer.

DISCOVER HERITAGE The Flower Pots in Cheriton, near Alresford, is, I believe, the only pub with that name, though there is a Flower Pot (singular) in Hounslow. The pub was once a farmhouse and home to the head gardener of nearby Avington Park. This is said to be the origin of its name. It is a very traditional and popular pub, much appreciated by those who remember what pubs used to be like and prefer them that way. No piped music or big screens here, just good beer and genuinely home-prepared food. One of the most interesting of all our local pub names is the Trusty Servant in the village of Minstead in the New Forest. Its sign depicts a composite creature with a pig’s snout, an ass’s ears, stag’s feet, what look like fire irons in his left hand, and bearing a sword and shield. The picture appears to have its origins in a painting in Winchester College, but apparently there are similar, and earlier, depictions of the same creature elsewhere in Europe. There used to be a board beneath the sign bearing this rhyme: A Trusty Servant's portrait would you see, This emblematic figure well survey. A porker's snout not nice in diet shows; A padlock shut, no secret he'll disclose; Patient the ass his master’s wrath will bear; Swiftness in errand, the stag's feet declare; Laden his left hand, apt to labour saith; The vest his neatness, open hand his faith; Girt with his sword, his shield upon his arm, Himself and master he'll protect from harm. A little explanation may help. The rhyme catalogues the virtues of the perfect servant. The pig’s snout shows that he is not a fussy eater, but willing to consume his master’s leftovers. His ass’s ears show his patience when beaten by his master, while his stag’s feet indicate how fast he will run on his master’s business. Other characteristics are mentioned in the rhyme. The prize for the most unlikely conjunction of pub name and location must surely go to the long gone Sociable Plover pub in the

Paulsgrove area of Portsmouth. The Sociable Plover is an internationally endangered wading bird of west Asia that has made only a few appearances in Britain and just one in Hampshire. In October 1986 one appeared for a few days in the Titchfield Haven area before moving on for a couple of weeks to HMS Daedalus airfield at Lee-on-Solent. What made someone decide to name a pub in Paulsgrove after this rare and handsome bird? We may never know. But you certainly couldn’t make it up. by Stephen Harvey

Working from home Spring is here at last, and with it comes the end of a dreadful dilemma that has been plaguing me since November – whether to turn on the central heating or not? Our new house is a dreadful wind-tunnel. An icy blast rips straight through it from the illfitting front door to the catflap in the kitchen. The dining room that serves as my office is right in the middle of the house and man! Is it cold! The fact that the ancient wooden sash windows are more gap than glass doesn’t help, but as the house is listed and in a conservation area they can’t be replaced. The central heating comes on at 6.30am, the boiler coming alive with a rattle and a roar that served the entire household as an alarm-clock until we got used to it. By 7am the house is toasty – almost too toasty, in fact. Then one by one the family emerges, blinking and bleary, breakfasts, and departs for whatever quotidian joys await. Leaving me and my dilemma. The heating is timed to go off at 9.30, and within a few moments the house has gone polar again. I could just turn it on again, but it seems wasteful to heat the whole house when I’m sitting on my tod in a single room. On the other hand I could go round turning off all the radiators in the rooms that aren’t being used, but it takes forever and anyway, I no longer particularly want to go into my teenage son’s room. I’m sure some of the old washing that’s strewn about the place is alive and could well be dangerous. Besides, then I’d have to do the same tour again and turn all the radiators on when the heating shudders back into life at 4.30. Could I be bothered? I most certainly could not! The alternative is to make do with a single bar of the ancient electric fire in the dining room. This does the job all right – on one side of me, which gets char-grilled, while the other remains deep frozen. But here’s the dilemma (and it’s one that we middle-class liberals get genuinely handwringing about, so don’t laugh): which alternative is the less destructive to Lifeboat Earth? Is it the

carbon-rich fumes wheezing into the atmosphere from the flue of the gas boiler, or is it whatever eco-outrages are perpetrated in order to squirt a trickle of current into the electric fire? I really don’t know, and it’s doing my head in. On a more prosaic note, I don’t know which alternative is the more expensive, either. A manlier man than me could probably read the meters and sort the data to make meaningful comparisons. But for me and the bills it’s out of sight, out of mind. There is, of course, a politically correct option, which would be to insulate the house properly. But how do you insulate a 17th-century cottage without ripping out the entire interior and, effectively, starting from scratch? Cavity wall insulation? Don’t make me laugh! The windows we’ve already dealt with. As for loft insulation – well, the loft is the attic bedroom, my son’s sinister eyrie. If you tried to clad the sloping ceiling with insulating foam and then put up the necessary plasterboard the headroom would be reduced still further and the poor boy would have to bend double to get in. And anyway, even if there are grants available towards the cost I have a feeling that persuading the landlord to make any additional investment that might be necessary would be about as easy as converting Iran to Wesleyan Methodism. So there’s only one thing for it. Before next winter comes, I’ll have to buy a jumper. by Ted Bruning

One man, two wheels, 8000 disadvantaged youngsters With the Olympics just around the corner we can look forward to our own athletes taking part in the challenge, hopefully winning medals on ‘home turf’. But the event is more than just an intensive two weeks of challenges; the aim is to inspire people to take up sports and to find new athletic talent for future years. For those that do have a talent though it’s an expensive job to make their way to the top, and undoubtedly many parents will have to make their own sacrifices to help achieve that goal. But what about the talent that goes unnoticed? With no monetary support, no access to facilities or ability to travel to the big events, those from a less affluent background could easily be overlooked. The William Wates Memorial Trust (WWMT) is a grants giving registered charity set up in 1998 with a mission to help disadvantaged young people fulfil their potential, and stay away from a life of crime, using the mediums of sports, arts and education. The Trust exists to celebrate the life of William Wates (1977- 1996) who was tragically killed when travelling in South America. His family set up the trust to shine some light into the lives of young people who have not had the advantages that Will enjoyed and reflects where Will’s interests would have been if he was alive today. Since 1998 the Trust has donated just over £1M and helped over 8,000 disadvantaged young people fulfil their potential. The WWMT have set up a team of people called Tour de Force to cycle the route of The Tour de France. This will be an epic challenge for everyone who takes part, whether they are cycling one, two or twenty stages. All the cyclists will go above and beyond their personal limits, requiring herculean levels of stamina, mental strength and humour. They will battle through adversity in the form of sleep deprivation, awful weather, aching bodies and km after km of challenging terrain! Meon Valley business owner Glen Belcher who is Managing Director at Avalon Financial Associates Ltd is one of these team members. He tells us a bit about what he’s going to be doing, and why. “It is something I passionately believe in and I have been involved for a number of years in local communities supporting youngsters through the medium of sport. So in July 2012 I will be completing my own Olympic event, completing the last 5 stages of the Tour De France. This will be painful enough but some colleagues are

completing the whole tour, over 2,000 miles in three weeks. I’m appealing to residents in the Meon Valley to support me in my endeavours. Help us mad fools and I mean mad. I came off my bike in January and dislocated my collarbone, but in true Olympic /Tour De France spirit I was back training two weeks later. Please help me and my colleagues to help others by looking at the web sites and donating no matter how small an amount. Every penny raised will go to supporting this fantastic cause.
