When my birthday approaches, as it did recently, I hold back from buying myself anything for at least 6 weeks before the day. Then part of my treat afterwards is to go out and treat myself to something new. So, I went to a shop recently that was having a sale and chose two items for myself which totalled £49. While queuing I saw the most gorgeous handbag costing £50. My daughter was really encouraging me to buy it (mainly because she would borrow it I think), but I didn’t feel I could justify it – I do have plenty of handbags. However when I went to pay for the first two items, the assistant told me they’d both been reduced so the total was now just £20. I was relating this tale to my husband afterwards and explained how, now I’d saved £30 on the first two items, I could have the handbag because £50 minus the extra £29 I’d saved is only £21 and the handbag was easily worth £21. He did try to argue the point. I heard him say something about “you didn’t have £30 more to spend” and “the handbag was not £21, it was still £50 which is a lot for a handbag”. But I was using the ‘woman’s logic’ method of arithmetic so I know my sums are right. Ladies: practice this maths method before you go to the summer sales. Men: don’t waste your breath debating the point, you’ve lost, and never more so than when it comes to handbags and shoes. Happy shopping! DIS COV ER H E RI TAG E
HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE A Breath of Fresh Air No one could accuse our English weather of being predictable. After six weeks of rain and wintry cold, it changed overnight in late May to Mediterranean sunshine only to revert to rain and wind a week or so later. However, trapped indoors by the cold, wet spring, when we do have a few good days, many of us are now eager to be out in the fresh air . So this month I’m going to suggest a couple of places to catch up with the great outdoors. A high spot First, a Hampshire high spot – Old Winchester Hill. Its name is misleading, because it isn’t in or near Winchester. It’s beside the Meon Valley about 2 miles SE of Warnford. It’s a National Nature Reserve of 156 acres, managed by Natural England. At its summit, Old Winchester Hill is 646 feet high. At the top there’s an Iron Age hill fort and some Bronze Age burial barrows that date to about 4,000 BC. It’s a great place for bucketfuls of fresh air and good – though in places steep – walking. It’s also possible to enjoy a gentler and almost completely level walk on ancient turf (so kind to the feet) if you stay beside the main bridleway. The views in all directions from the summit of the hill amply repay the effort of getting there. The reserve’s unspoiled chalk downland is a good place for birds, butterflies and wildflowers, especially orchids. Fly, Bee, and Frog Orchids all occur. Green Woodpeckers favour the many anthills,
6
c a l l D i s c o v e r M a g a z i n e s o n 014 8 9 6 6 0 02 2
and Kestrels hang in the updraughts of the hill, seeking voles. Many other birds may be seen. The reserve (OS grid reference SU643205) is signposted and reached by a narrow lane that leaves the A32 at Warnford, almost opposite the George and Falcon pub. The reserve is open to the public free of charge. It has no facilities other than a car park and an information hut. In addition to the main car park, there is a three-bay parking and viewing area for disabled people about ¼ mile south of the main car park. A further ¼ mile south is an entrance to a car park for limited-mobility visitors. This allows an Easy Access trail to be followed for about a third of a mile. The trail has several resting places and viewing points. In order to pass through a locked gate to reach the disabled parking area, a RADAR key is necessary (http://www.radar-shop.org.uk/). http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/conservation/ designatedareas/nnr/1006115.aspx Back to sea level My other suggestion could hardly be more different – Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve at Hill Head, near Fareham. The reserve, which is at sea level, consists mainly of a series of shallow lakes near the mouth of the river Meon at Hill Head. Six quite widely dispersed viewing hides provide good views not only of birds but if you are lucky of other wildlife, including fox and roe deer. ‘Darters Dip’ has been created to attract dragonflies. The walks between the hides provide fresh air and exercise. The
s
DIS COV ER H E RI TAG E reserve is child- (but not dog-) friendly. A family ticket (two adults, two children) costs £9.50. If you have them, take binoculars. Avocets are among the birds you can hope to see. There is a modern reception centre that includes a well-stocked gift and book shop, toilet facilities, and a café serving snacks and light meals. Entry to the visitor centre and café is free, and some of the reserve is overlooked from a public viewing area near the sea front, where parking is also free. The seafront road has excellent views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Yacht races are often taking place. It is a popular spot at weekends. Just across the road from the visitor centre is Hill Head harbour, a picturesque yacht basin. When the tide is in, a flotilla of ducks awaits food expectantly, but you are asked not to feed bread, which is not good for them. The visitor centre sells small bags of an appropriate seed for feeding to the ducks. The road here is busy and close by, so do be careful with young children. Visitor Centre and Reserve, Cliff Road, Hill Head, Fareham, Hampshire PO14 3JT
Tel 01329 662145. http://www3.hants.gov.uk/ countryside/titchfield.htm Nearby pubs include the Osborne Arms at Hill Head, with marvellous views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, and the Crofton in Crofton Road, Stubbington. The Crofton belies its 1960s estate pub exterior. Inside it is a spacious and popular pub serving a good variety of food. But wherever you go and whatever the weather, enjoy it. There’s nothing like fresh air and gentle exercise for improving the outlook.

What a
Marwellous Life!
John Knowles has always had both a love, and a fascination for animals. During his childhood this fascination never went further than stick insects, rabbits and a Scottish terrier. Nobody, including John Knowles, could have seen where his life was to take him which was to become the founder of Marwell Zoo (now called Marwell Wildlife). His was not a privileged upbringing by any means. John left school at 16, went to Agricultural College and decided that farming was to be his future. Having left college, luck - which he feels has played quite an important part in his life - was with him when a small farm with 127 acres and no house came on the market which he purchased with his father’s help. Involvement with poultry production eventually grew into a large business, the sale of part of which allowed him to purchase the 414 acre Marwell Hall Estate. This considerable investment was no flight of fancy on the part of a man who was by this time quite wealthy. Indeed the only reason for the purchase was to build a Zoo to satisfy what had, for John Knowles, become an overriding passion; to help save endangered species. It’s easy for people with vision and determination, who are in themselves quite humble beings, to attribute their success to luck but in the case of John Knowles, it is obvious in reading his life story that luck actually played only a small part in the success of Marwell Zoo; the main ‘player’ was undoubtedly Knowles himself. John’s autobiography makes for a fascinating read whether your interest is local history, animals or personal achievement stories.

No Win - No Fee*

Have you or a relative paid Nursing Home fees in the last eight years? “There’s nothing more distressing after losing a parent than finding out that their savings did not need to be spent on their care home fees. The system has let many people down very badly indeed.” This is the view of Jonathan Anderson, an experienced Will and Trust Specialist and founder of www. Recovernursinghomefees.com. Jonathan is currently progressing dozens of compensation assessments in the south of England where the lack of standardised criteria used in assessing who pays Nursing Home fees has potentially left families tens of thousands of pounds worse off. “Unfortunately differences in assessment between different UK Health Authorities has created a postcode lottery in whether the
www.recovernursinghomefees.com Primary Care Trust (PCT) or individuals have had to pay for care” Jonathan explained. “The Government has acknowledged that this has been unfair and have set aside a billion pounds in compensation.“ Compensation claims are open to anyone who was/is paying for residential care from April 2004 but there are deadlines to register cases, the earliest of which is September 2012. “If you think that the fee assessment was not properly handled then it’s imperative to start the ball rolling now” Jonathan told us. “Our no win no fee policy means there is absolutely no barrier to anyone starting the process.” Once a case is accepted, a home visit prepares all the paperwork and all cases are submitted with an expert medical report produced by Senior Medical Practioners with experience of elderly care. “Compensation is not going to bring back a relative who has sadly passed away but helping to recover a financial legacy that was lost due to poor PCT practices is very important for the families left behind.”

DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE
Crop Circles Mischief Makers or Aliens? As summer draws to a close, this is the best time to go out and see what delights the Andy Goldsworthys of the skies have left us to marvel at this year. Actually, crop circles “appear” around the world throughout spring, summer, and autumn – whenever and wherever there’s a standing crop. But with a fair chance of decent weather and the kids on holiday and needing some diversion, August may be the right month to go and see one, perhaps as part of a day out in the country which might include a pub lunch and a couple of hours in a traffic jam on the A303 (because an awful lot of crop circles “appear” in the Stonehenge area). I say “appear” in quotation marks because of course the contentiousness about them is how they’re made, or more especially who or what they’re made by: freak weather, outer space visitors or human pranksters. Crop circles have been reported sporadically since the 17th century, and the first investigation of their cause, in Surrey in 1880, put them down to “cyclonic wind action”, extraterrestrials having not yet been thought of. From the 1970s, though, they were reported more and more often, attracting more media attention and more theories about their origin. I needn’t go into detail, but by 1991 there was a large body of opinion that they were the work of UFOs or their occupants. Unfortunately for the UFO theorists, in that year a couple of blokes called Doug Brewer and Dave Chorley claimed to have made most if not all of them using nothing more sophisticated than a plank and a length of rope, and were more than happy to be filmed doing so. Since then there have been crop circle
14
c a l l D i s c o v e r M a g a z i n e s o n 014 8 9 6 6 0 02 2
competitions and manufacturers including Nike have used their logos rendered as crop circles in advertising. There’s even a group called Circlemakers that specialises in creating ever more intricate patterns and, like Doug and Dave, is happy to be filmed doing it. But it takes more than a video of a couple of guys with a plank and a length of rope to convince the UFO theorists and although I don’t wish to be disrespectful of sincerely-held views it always seems a bit strange to me to favour a theory you can’t prove over an alternative that can be demonstrated, filmed, and repeated on demand. The UFO theorists – who, given their refusal to believe the evidence of their own eyes, ought to be called the “sceptics” in this case – can point to lots of oddities and anomalies that suggest that Doug, Dave and their successors didn’t create all of the crop circles in the world; but then, we don’t know who painted all of the paintings in the world, but that’s no reason to suggest that extraterrestrials did. I raise the subject of paintings deliberately, because I don’t really care whether it was a couple of blokes or alien astronauts: my point is, crop circles are beautiful and they serve no practical purpose - to me that makes them art. Anyway, believe what you want to believe. But if you’re having one of those Dunkirk-spirit makethe-best-of-the-recession “holidays at home” this summer, just Google one of the million or so regularly-updated websites devoted to the subject, choose a crop circle near you, and visit it. You’ll love it. Who needs art galleries? by Ted Bruning

The Life List Why It’s Great Getting Older
1. There’s less going on in your life now, so it doesn’t really matter if you forget things. There’s always someone who buys you notepads at Christmas anyhow. 2. As there’s not much going on in your life, even little things to look forward to can make a huge difference to your day. Things like staying up late – till after 10pm – or the repeat of a film you think you used to like, although you can’t remember what it’s about now or how it ends. 3. You have enough experience to realise that the small stuff doesn’t matter in the long run, now that you’re down to a long crawl.

DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story The Battenberg Relay The sugar on the last slice of Battenberg cake twinkled in the afternoon sun. Kevin licked his lips and glanced round. On the patio, Dad was distracted trying to find a picture on the portable TV so that he, Uncle Mick and Granddad could watch the men’s 400 metre relay. As Kevin reached up to take the cake, his mum appeared from nowhere and slapped the back of his hand. “Hands off, Auntie Ivy wants that,” she said. With silver tongs she lifted the slice of yellow and pink sponge wrapped in marzipan and placed it carefully on a tea plate. “But she’s had two pieces already,” Kevin whined. “You shouldn’t be counting. I can’t trust you with this, where’s Francis?” Francis was about to help himself to a fistful of crisps. Mum thrust the plate into his hand and pointed him in the direction of Ivy. Auntie Ivy was sprawled asleep on a lounger at the far end of the garden. Francis sullenly took the plate and, as Mum turned her back, he winked at Kevin and gave the cake a long wet lick. Grinning, Francis set off across the lawn. Cousin Hannah intercepted him waving a Swing Ball bat. “Play a game with me Francis, Robin’s rubbish.” Little Robin threw down his bat and stuck out his bottom lip. “I didn’t want to play anyway.” “Take this to Auntie Ivy for me then.” Francis handed the tea plate to Robin, and picked up the bat. Wiping his nose on the back of his hand, Robin walked unsteadily in Ivy’s direction. A curious wasp circled the plate, upon which Robin panicked and tripped over the hosepipe sending him and the cake sprawling across a pile of grass cuttings. Cousin Lucy, witnessing the fall, came running over. “It’s for Auntie Ivy,” Robin sobbed. “And I’ve ruined it.” “Never mind, go and find your mum, I’ll take it to Ivy.” Lucy said turning the cake over to the clean side. Meanwhile, Michael from next door, who was only

there because he was hoping to see Lucy, was sitting on the bench swing wearing shades and sipping from a can of Top Deck. He beckoned her over. She grinned and squeezed in next to him, still clutching the plate. Robin’s wasp however, was still in pursuit and now found itself unable to choose between the cake and Michael’s drink. Making an error of judgement it landed with a buzz on Michael’s top lip. Michael, losing the cool he had spent all afternoon creating, sprayed a shower of pop all over himself, Lucy and the cake. Mortified, they both ran off in opposite directions to find napkins. Kevin had been sat by the garden wall squashing red spider mites and watching the progress of the Battenberg cake, now abandoned on the chair. With a furtive look round, he picked it up and inspected it. No one was looking. The cake was all his for the taking. The sponge was covered in dried grass, a fine mist of pop and a swirl of lick and he realised to his dismay that he no longer wanted it. “Auntie Ivy,” he called holding the plate out to her. She opened one eye. “Kevin, is that my cake? You took your time,” she said, awkwardly pushing herself upright. She didn’t even glance at the cake as she picked it up and swallowed it in one huge mouthful. At that moment, with almost uncanny coincidence, there was an explosion of cheers from the crowd sat around the portable TV, making Kevin jump out of his guilty skin. by Jackie Brewster

DISCOVER GEOCACHING
Geocaching The GPS Treasure Hunt
Fancy a fun-filled activity all the family can enjoy? Then give Geocaching a try. “Why don’t you switch off your TV set and go and do something less boring instead?” was the irritatingly catchy theme-tune from popular children’s television show “Why Don’t You?” Nowadays, “TV” would have to be replaced with Games-console/Laptop/Mobile phone or the latest must-have electronic gadget we can’t live without. But there is a way to convince the whole family out of the house with an electronic device whilst enjoying a good walk or bike ride in the countryside: Geocaching. This involves tracking down hidden items, or caches, with a GPS device and recording your find. You log-on to the Internet to find the coordinates of the cache, and then use your eyes to locate its exact whereabouts – like a good oldfashioned treasure hunt. Look online and you’ll find videos of cleverly hidden caches – inside sawn-up logs in forests, stuck-up pipes by rivers and even stuffed in plastic bricks as part of the wall of a disused building. They’re usually made up of a logbook sealed in a plastic box or ammocase, along with small trinkets to keep or swap for something of similar value, and are always found outdoors. And if you’re really lucky, you might come across a “trackable” – a numbered coin or dogtag that’s moved from cache to cache. Each time it is moved, its serial number is logged on-line so it can be tracked. Bought online for a couple of pounds, some have been known to travel more than 10,000 miles over 3 continents. Geocaching started in the US after early GPSenthusiast Dave Ulmer planted a bucket filled
28
c a l l D i s c o v e r M a g a z i n e s o n 014 8 9 6 6 0 02 2
with videos, books, software and a slingshot, together with a logbook and pencil, in woods near his house. After posting the coordinates online on May 3rd 2000, his package was found twice within two days after word spread rapidly among the online community. The official Geocaching website launched in September 2000 with the coordinates for 75 caches across the world listed on it. The craze soon took-off and today there are over 1.3m caches hidden in over 100 countries across the globe, with 5 million registered users. And it’s really simple to start Geocaching – just create a free membership on www.geocaching. com, type in your postcode to find caches near you, invest in a GPS device or mobile phone with GPS capability and that’s it, you’re ready. Most GPS devices take you within 6-20 feet of the object so be prepared to spend a while looking for the cache when you arrive there - this is the bit that the kids always love the best. And remember to always respect the countryside where the cache is found – don’t leave litter or damage the environment. So for a fantastic family day out that doesn’t cost a fortune, often set in stunning countryside, why don’t you give Geocaching a go? It’s certainly less boring than watching TV. Be careful of Muggles near a cache though – Muggles are non-geocachers who are sometimes near caches, such as people innocently walking their dog. Cachers try not to reveal what they’re doing to Muggles! by Trevor Arnold

DISCOVER HOME
Working from home Debt Collecting I should be rolling in it, really. Well, not rolling in it exactly, but firmly in the black. Things have been looking up recently. I’ve been working consistently, nothing spectacular, but making new contacts and firing off bits and pieces here and there. So why do I have a dose of the butterflies whenever I approach the checkout? Why should I have to fear those dreaded words “card declined”? Cashflow! That’s the thing every self-employed person has to watch out for. It seems impossibly long ago that I could simply take for granted that at the same time every month a chit would land on my desk confirming that the money was in the bank. My wife never even used to bother opening hers: she has a drawer full of pristine little blueedged window envelopes, and sometimes I would rip a few open and remind myself what it was like to be paid regularly. But life’s not like that anymore. We have, perforce, become our own accounts departments and if we were any good at accounts we would have become accountants in the first place. Me, I’m a freelance journalist who failed his maths ‘O’ level three times. I have, in 20 years of selfemployment, learnt how to keep my books tolerably tidy and (sometimes) up to date.
34
The skill I have failed to master is the invoice chasing. Most of my clients pay on time, and I hope yours do too, but what I’ve found (and maybe you have too) is that the worst payers are the very biggest clients and the very smallest. The smallest ones are just a nuisance. I’ve been owed £36 by my smallest client since November. I have some sympathy for him: he’s focused, like me, on doing what he does to earn money and my invoice is hardly a priority. He forgets it, and as I’ve already spent about £36 in phone calls I’ve stopped chasing him. I won’t work for him again, but he probably doesn’t care. I’m certainly not taking him to small claims court for £36. The biggest ones, though, can be a real problem. I used to write beer reviews for the website of a big supermarket chain for a ridiculously inflated sum. On paper it looked terrific – but they were dreadful payers. First I had to go through the bureaucratic rigmarole of registering as a supplier for which I had to provide enough financial details to satisfy a con-man. Then I had to submit my invoices in a particular format and at a particular time, then I had to wait 90 days and then they didn’t pay me. Now this was serious money: late payment threatened my
c a l l D i s c o v e r M a g a z i n e s o n 014 8 9 6 6 0 02 2
direct debits. I used to console myself that no-one in the history of the world would ever have said that what they really, really wanted to do with their lives was become a cog in a supermarket chain accounts department, and that working life for the people processing my invoice was a permanent Friday afternoon where everybody wanted to be somewhere else and everything was somebody else’s job. I used to spend hours on the phone, quoting my supplier number and invoice details frantically at anyone who could be induced to interrupt the bland hell of the hold music. Eventually somebody would wearily tell me to resubmit the invoice and wait another 90 days. I had the last laugh, though. Not once but twice, the repeat invoice and the original invoice were both paid. I never told. by Ted Bruning

Alresford Agricultural Show – A Great Day Out The 104th Alresford Agricultural Show will take place on 1st September 2012 in the magnificent surroundings of Tichborne Park, Hampshire. Many shows claim to be ‘country’ shows, but very few can match the Alresford Show when it comes to being an authentic reflection of life in the Hampshire farming world. If you’ve always yearned to get close to a modern hi-tech £100,000 tractor, you’ll find plenty here. It’s not all modern though, as there will be a display of vintage machinery too. The link between farming and horses goes back
thousands of years, and equine affairs have always featured strongly at the Alresford Show with heavy horses, Iberian horses, show hunters, classes for children and the Diamond Jubilee Fancy Dress. The range of other livestock you’ll find is just as large and varied, ranging from the traditional cattle pigs and sheep, to bees, goats and alpacas. The popular horticultural tent will have fabulous displays of roses, dahlias and chrysanthemums. Other events include running with the beagles, climbing the spider mountain and Alresford Rugby Club’s displays.
photographer Charles
Cuthbert
The Craft Tent will be bursting with ceramics, lace making, jewellery and sculpture. And a visit to the Produce tent to sample Hampshire’s finest cheeses, cider, wines and cakes is a must. Tickets are very modestly priced at £13 for adults, £9 for senior citizens – accompanied under 15’s are free. See details above of how to buy and how to get an early booking discount.
