Warwick Lane Shopping Arcade NOW OPEN See page 9 for details
Delivered by Royal Mail into the Meon Valley community
Hello and Welcome With the news full of negative reports in the retail sector, it’s great to see a bit of life in both Bishop’s Waltham and Wickham. Firstly in Wickham is a super new retail area called Warwick Lane. This is a series of shops offering quality baby wear, ladies clothing, vintage toys, party goods, children’s wear, gifts and even a coffee shop. See page 9 for some of the pictures and well worth calling in for a browse. And in Bishop’s Waltham a number of empty shops have now been taken over. With a ladies’ boutique, gifts, home accessories and footwear, they are a welcome addition to an already lively shopping area. On which subject Labels Ladies Dress Agency are having a pre-Christmas open evening on the 21st November – that’s in our diaries for definite. Another shop has been taken over by Plates PC, the IT support people. A little bit of background on the team and their services is on page 5. Nothing to do with shopping, but I must tell you about this: By the time you read this Melanie will have completed a charity 10 mile run in aid of Southampton Hospital’s Red & White Appeal. The appeal aims to raise £1.76 million to create a dedicated day treatment
unit for patients suffering from leukaemia and other blood disorders. She will no doubt still be hobbling around in recovery mode! Well done to her, it’s a great cause and no easy challenge to undertake. Her charity page is http://tinyurl. com/melsrun if you could spare a couple of pounds – both she and the patients for the hospital will be extremely grateful. And of course in November there is a big fundraising drive from many volunteers for the Royal British Legion as we approach Remembrance Day. What I notice is that when I hand over my money – even if it’s only a small amount – is that I’m the one that feels good about it. It actually lifts my spirits to know I’ve given to someone else. If you can afford it, try it for yourself! Tania

Plates PCs The old butcher’s shop in the centre of Bishops Waltham has recently been taken over by IT Specialists, Plates PC. Wez Hall is the managing director, and heart and soul of the company. From a young age Wez has always had the approach that to understand how something works, you must take it apart, assess it, fiddle and then rebuild it. This was not always popular, when relatives saw him taking apart expensive gadgets and gizmos they had chosen for him, but ideal in this industry. The perfectionist in him, has seen many a computer taken apart several times and rebuilt until he is satisfied, despite it being 2am! This approach is still with him in what is not only a business but a passion. For Wez, a typical day isn’t complete without a computer being dismantled, rebuilt and reinstalled. So you can understand why his wife is celebrating that this now takes place at the work premises and no longer at home. Wez took the plunge to open up a shop/ office within the local community to raise the profile of the company and to meet the growing demands of the business. Having a base situated in the heart of the village has been great for business and the response from the community has been amazing, and the general feeling from Wez and his customers, is that they should have opened the shop years ago. Plates PCs has over ten years IT experience,
the tekkie people Plates PCs are your essential specialist IT support with over 10 years established experience. We custom build, upgrade, service and refurbish all computers (both PC & Mac). Quality Clothing, Bargain Prices Labels Dress Agency is a specialist Boutique stocking a large selection of quality pre-owned Ladieswear, often unworn, and also stock handbags and fashion jewellery. The agency acts on behalf of customers who have good quality clothing and accessories which they wish to sell. Garments are accepted by appointment on a sale or return basis and are held for 45 days. An itemised receipt is issued detailing the customer reference number, all accepted items and the agreed collection date for any unsold items. The clothes are then displayed in their boutique where customers can browse at leisure. With new items arriving on a daily basis the stock is constantly changing. Desirable items sell very quickly, so if there is a particular item/brand which you are searching for you will need to let them have your details and they will let you know as soon as items/brands become available. So don’t break the bank to look fabulous for the Christmas Party. Go along to Labels and snap up something fabulous!

Is Solar Electricity Right for Me? For most homeowners, solar photovoltaics (PVs) are the most accessible form of renewable energy. They can be fitted easily to a building’s roof without significant disruption to the occupants inside and they quietly generate electricity whenever the sun shines. The Government-backed financial incentives available can also make them a very attractive investment. With the Government wanting to see one million PV installations under their Feed-in Tariff scheme by 2015, more installations are urgently needed. Paul Coe, Regional Director of EnergyMyWay in Southampton, answers some of the most common PV questions: Are the Government Incentives Still Available? Customers regularly tell me that they thought that the Government’s incentive scheme for photovoltaics was over. This isn’t the case. From 1 November, the Feed-in Tariff rate for domestic PV installations is 15.44p/unit of electricity you generate – regardless of whether you use the energy yourself or not. As well as the Feed-in Tariff, customers also benefit from savings on their electricity bills when they use the energy they generate, and receive an additional payment of 4.5p/unit for electricity that they export back to the national grid. For ease of administration, electricity companies will generally assume that you export half of the electricity you generate. When put together, these payments and savings can provide a rate of return on your investment of up to 12%. A return which is index-linked and tax free. Is My Roof Suitable? Another concern people have is whether their roof is suitable. Everyone knows a south facing roof is best, but good returns can also be achieved with east or west facing roofs. To install the largest domestic systems of 4kW, you need at least 17m² of roof facing the sun, but viable systems are possible with an area of about 10m² or above. In fact, we can use several roofs facing different directions – we recently installed a system with 5 panels facing east, 5 facing west and a further 5 facing south to achieve a 4kW system on one property in Southampton. Does My Home Qualify for the Payments? People have also heard that they need an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) at grade D or above, to access the best incentive payments. Those that have been in their property
14

since before 2007 probably don’t have one, so EnergyMyWay now offer a free EPC as part of our service. Grade D is the average energy performance of UK housing. If you are a little below this, adding solar will help you achieve the necessary level. If you are further below, then we would recommend that customers implement other energy saving measures before they consider PV. Measures such as loft and cavity wall insulation are very cost effective and pay for themselves in just a few years. Talk to the Experts EnergyMyWay have been providing customers with independent renewable energy advice and installations since 2008. In a recent survey, 99.7% of our customers said they would recommend EnergyMyWay to their friends, colleagues and family. With energy prices set to rise above inflation, and solar PV offering a better return than most savings accounts on the typical £5,000£7,000 investment in an installation, there has never been a better time to invest in renewable energy. DISCOVER LIFE BEGINS
Life Begins The Art of Downsizing Neither my husband nor I were intentional hoarders. It just happened that our family house was blessed – some might say, cursed – with handy storage spaces. Built-in cupboards, understairs spaces, a loft, a shed and even a garage all served to quietly absorb our superfluous items. Like the chains worn by Marley’s ghost in Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, we felt the weight of our past lives bearing down upon us every time we opened a cupboard door. It was time to downsize. We started by selling some of the smaller items on Ebay. This popular online auction site takes a relatively low commission of 10% (although you should be prepared to pay some associated listing fees). All you need is a good camera and a willingness to painstakingly write up each item for sale. Once it’s up on the site, you can expect a nailbiting wait for the bids to come in. Often an item will remain unsold all week and then someone will bid in the last few seconds. As the payment zooms into your PayPal account, be ready to despatch your item. You’ll need to ensure it’s well packed and sent within the timeframe you’ve indicated if you want to keep that essential 100% positive feedback score. We found online auction sites were great for selling small objects that could be easily posted, but larger items, such as pieces of furniture, proved harder to shift. You can list your piece for ‘collection only’ but more than once I’ve had to re-list a piece of furniture after the successful bidder developed a case of cold feet. If you haven’t the patience for online auctions, car boot sales can provide a useful alternative providing you’re prepared to let your treasured
18
c a l l D i s c o v e r M a g a z i n e s o n 02 3 8 02 6 6 3 8 8
possessions go for a fraction of their value. However, it’s not a good way to sell valuable jewellery, antiques or other high value items. When we wanted to sell a large, Georgian sideboard that had belonged to my mother, we took it to a local auction room. The idea of putting the piece in a live auction was exciting, but we were unprepared for the fees we would need to pay in addition to the auctioneer’s commission of 17.5%. We enjoyed the buzz of the auction and fortunately the piece exceeded its reserve, but the underlying costs – including transportation, photographic fee and VAT - made a significant dent in the ‘hammer price’ achieved. Live auction is still one of the best options for really valuable items, but you should think carefully about using this method to sell less expensive pieces. If, like us, you have odd bits of low value furniture to clear, you could contact a local dealer. You can save time by taking pictures along to the shop so the dealer can see exactly what you have to sell. The art of successful downsizing requires patience and ingenuity. Try to avoid employing a ‘one size fits all’ solution such as a house clearance service. It takes time to whittle down a lifetime of possessions, so it’s best to begin the process well before you put your house on the market. Of course, it’s sad to let go of the past, but it can also be liberating. We found it helped to take pictures of the things we really loved before sending them on their way. Tell yourself that you’ve enjoyed owning these items, but now it’s time to for them to become someone else’s treasured keepsake.

Argonaut Community Enterprises Argonaut is celebrating the end of its second year this September. Established by Stephen Dering and Gill Winstanley who are both deaf, Argonaut is a not for profit social firm that delivers cleaning, gardening, plumbing and electrical services to homes across South Hampshire. What makes Argonaut unique is that all the employees have a disability from deafness to learning disability to cerebral palsy. “Our staff value the real work opportunities that we are able to give them,” says Gill. “Many will be have been out of work for a long time and lack the confidence to do well in job interviews.” Gardener Richard has never worked since leaving college despite holding qualifications because of his learning disabilities and there was no support to find work. Yet he is part of the Argonaut’s Gardening team in demand in across Portsmouth, Southampton, Fareham and Meon Valley. Cleaner Julie from Hedge End was lacking in confidence and would not travel far from her home. “I started working at Argonaut in September 2011. My new job involved working

I learned to try and communicate in different ways so that customers can understand me.” “I was also not confident about going to new places by bus, train or even driving. Thanks to Argonaut I am beginning to feel more confident about getting around independently.” The more work that Argonaut can take on, the more local disabled people that will be able to benefit from the same opportunities that Jase and Catherine have had.

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE This morning I went to see Florence Nightingale’s burial place at the tiny church of St Margaret of Antioch in the village of Wellow in Hampshire. When Florence, a national heroine, died at the age of 90, her relatives were offered a state funeral in Westminster Abbey. They declined, preferring the parish church of her home. My interest in Florence Nightingale was triggered by the book Spike Island by Philip Hoare. The book is an extraordinarily detailed account of the construction and subsequent operation of the grandiose Royal Military Hospital at Netley, beside Southampton Water. The intention was that the hospital should be grander than any such establishment before it, a symbol of national pride. Unfortunately, it was also a symbol of architectural vanity at the expense of functional efficiency. Many aspects of the building’s design were so poor from a clinical viewpoint that they would work against rather than for the recovery of the patients. From her experience at Scutari in the Crimean war, Florence could see many flaws in the proposed design of the Netley hospital. She took an opportunity to describe her misgivings to Queen Victoria herself and subsequently to figures in the government of the day and their advisers. At one point she set off from her home in Embley Park to nearby Broadlands to tell Lord Palmerston in person of her concerns. As a result, Palmerston wrote to his Secretary of State, “It seems to me that all consideration of what would best tend to
the comfort and recovery of the patients has been sacrificed to the vanity of the architect… Pray therefore stop all progress in the work until the matter can be duly considered.” This intervention by a woman came a hundred years before feminism and fifty before the suffragettes. The Florence Nightingale of popular myth is a ministering angel patrolling the wards in the barrack hospital at Scutari. The reality was a woman who had been appointed to the post of Superintendent of Nursing in the hospital at Scutari. She became a national hero for her tireless efforts to improve the standard of nursing care of the sick and wounded. The church of St Margaret of Antioch lies down the narrowest of country lanes, well away from the main residences and limited facilities of the village of Wellow. The church is generally described as being in East Wellow, but there is no administrative distinction between East and West Wellow, which are both within the one parish boundary, so the distinction between them is more or less confined to the OS map and popular parlance. The church itself is very small and quite plain.

It has some faded and flaking wall paintings, said by Pevsner to be probably early C13. Inevitably, there is a good deal of Florence Nightingale memorabilia. At the west end, screen panels display various items relating to Florence, including a model of a fair-haired young woman holding a lantern, who bears no resemblance to Florence.
In the nave, on the south side, a window sill is given over to photographs of her, along with a wreath, its predecessor donated by an American Florence Nightingale society. There is also a memorial tablet set into the south wall. Viewed from the south porch, the Nightingale family’s white marble memorial shines conspicuously among the lichened headstones of their less august neighbours. Three sides of the memorial commemorate her parents and her elder sister Parthenope. Florence hated any form of publicity and longed for anonymity, which explains the brevity of the fourth side of the memorial, inscribed simply “F. N. – Born 12 May 1820 – Died 13 August 1910”. But her wish for anonymity was doomed. People from all over the globe still make a pilgrimage to this simple country churchyard to pay homage to her. by Stephen Harvey

DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story Mouse Town
by Jackie Brewster
Colette phoned Dinah for an autopsy on the break-up. “Chris said it wasn’t working”. “Men!” Colette declared with all the indignation of her 17 years. “Don’t suppose you’ll be going to the fair tonight then?” “No, I’m not really in the mood”. As Dinah hung up, the doorbell rang. Martin stood in the porch, grinning. “My Mum said you needed a chaperone, so here I am”. Dinah pulled on her coat, “I’ve just told Colette I wasn’t going”. “Because you know she thinks I’m a boring geek not to be seen dead with?” Dinah laughed. “How did you guess?” “Call it a man’s intuition”. Dinah and Martin had grown up together; she was used to his odd ways. “If it’s any consolation”, Martin ventured, “I thought you were too good for him”. She rolled her eyes. “Let’s just go”. The evening was crisp as they walked towards town. Family groups with weary children drifted past them, clutching cuddly toys and bags of candy floss. Once they reached the market square they were engulfed in a fog of diesel fumes and frying onions. Carousel horses cantered within inches of shop windows, music thumped from every stall, and above it all hung a Ferris wheel. Martin grabbed her elbow and shouted, “Which of the health and safety infringements should we tackle first?” They staggered from the Waltzers onto the Meteor, followed by the Kamikaze. Dinah laughed helplessly; the fair was spinning her cares away. Soon she was feeling queasy. “Let’s do something gentle”, she said. “I’m rubbish at hook a duck and I have a note from my Mum to excuse me from the ghost train”, Martin said. She giggled. Colette was wrong - Martin wasn’t boring, he was funny. She pointed at a side-show squeezed behind the chemist. “Mouse Town. What’s that?” They slipped through a curtain into a sawdust strewn room. Behind a wooden barrier was a model of a town with streets, houses, a church and even its own fairground. And all the villagers were represented by live mice.

“It stinks”, Dinah said. “Can they escape?” “No”, Martin smiled. “They don’t even know there is a world outside. Look at them - running about, wrapped up in their own little lives”. They moved slowly round the barrier until once more emerging through a curtain into the fairground. They walked towards the dodgems and spotted Chris and Colette at the back of the queue. Chris’s arm was draped casually over Colette’s shoulder. Hurt and angry Dinah strode towards them. Martin grabbed her arm. “No”, Martin pulled her away. “Let it go”. He steered her up the ramp towards the Big Wheel. Numbly she climbed into a cradle. “How could she do this to me? She’s supposed to be my best friend”, Dinah sobbed. The wheel began to turn and Martin patted his pockets helplessly for a tissue. The cradle rose until they were right at the top. “Look below Dinah”, Martin said, “It’s just like Mouse Town. They’re all scurrying about, not caring what they do or who they hurt”. Dinah looked down. She saw swarms of people. The rides now seemed tiny. Even the music was quieter from up here. “Now, look up”, Martin whispered. Above she saw a dome of twinkling stars. “Only we can see that”. She looked at Martin and saw his kind face, his worried smile. She saw something else there, something wonderful. She couldn’t believe she’d never noticed it before. She offered him her hand. Calmly and graciously he took it in his.

The Life List How to read between the lines Everyone wants to be a writer these days, especially on the internet. But don’t be fooled by the advertising - things aren’t always what they seem. 1. Increase your portfolio. Yes, increase it with unpaid work, showing a prospective employer how much you love to write for free. 2. This project is just for fun. Just as long as your idea of fun is unpaid labour. 3. We hope to have a budget in a few months’ time. And I hope to regrow a full head of hair. Meanwhile, back on planet Earth... 4. This won’t take much of your time. Or much of our money. 5. I can only pay you in warm fuzzies. Unless I can re-sell them, earn interest on them or melt them on toast, I’ll pass. But I do have some cold realities for sale. 6. Future potential. That’s all well and good, but meantime I have a current hunger. Build that time machine and let me know how it all works out. 7. What’s your lowest rate? What’s your lowest standard for content? Maybe they could go on a blind date together. 8. Competitive rate. So competitive that it’s only cost-effective if you live in Asia. 9. Rewriter wanted. Plagiarists wanted. 10. Thousands of writers can’t be wrong. Thousands of writers can’t be fed. © Derek Thompson “The pen is mightier than the sword and easier to carry in your trouser pocket.” www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com
