When I was about 20, someone I worked with at the time was celebrating his 40th birthday and said to me “as you get older, time really speeds up”. Of course, being barely out of my teens at the time and having only me, me, me to fill my days I couldn’t really appreciate that. But as we are now in the last two months of another year and as they flew by so quickly that I can hardly recall what happened between January and October, I understand exactly what he meant. Yes, it will soon be Christmas…2012. But let’s take a moment to cram in a little more fun before Christmas 2011 is upon is. The highlight of the season in this area is of course The Bishop’s Waltham Christmas Fayre on the 1st December. In the middle pages this month you’ll see details of what’s happening for the event and many of the shops and businesses that will remain open that evening. We all have to shop at Christmas so we might as well make an occasion of it, soak up the ambience and actually enjoy buying gifts for our friends and family, rather than just taking a perfunctory trip to a chain store. We have a super competition this month too (page 17). Marwell Zoo have donated 10 free tickets to Marwell Hall this Christmas to meet Santa, Mrs Claus and their elves. We’re not signing off for the year yet though – you can expect to receive your next magazine in the first week of December. If you have something to say or to tell us about, or you want to advertise, the deadline is the 25th November. Until next month Tania Houston, Editor.

Top 10 Tips for Improving

Fuel Efficiency We’ve all watched helplessly as the cost of fuel has rocketed over the last few years. Does anyone remember when it cost less than £1 per litre? Believe it or not, according to the AA, it was only a little more than two years ago in May 2009. Whilst we can’t do anything to beat the increases, there are ways we can minimise its impact. Here are our top 10 tips for improving fuel efficiency. 1. Check the internet. Sites like www.petrolprices.com are invaluable as they’ll not only tell you where to find the cheapest petrol near your postcode, they’ll also tell you the highest, lowest and average prices in your area. 2. Drive more efficiently. The experts tell us that it’s possible to cut 60% off your fuel bills just by driving more carefully. Don’t ‘warm up’ the engine, accelerate gradually (try to stay under 3000 revs), avoid sharp braking, drive in the correct gear and at your car’s optimum speed. Stay aware of your positioning and the road conditions ahead to avoid sudden movement. 3. Don’t fill your tank. Remember that fuel weighs a lot so find a balance between not having to go to the petrol station that often but not carrying a full tank either, rather aiming for between one half and three quarters. 4. Streamline your car. Again, weight is a huge factor in fuel efficiency. Don’t keep a buggy, golf clubs or other unnecessary items in the car. Take off roof racks which add wind resistance and force your engine to work harder. 5. Keep a regular eye on your tyre pressure. Check your car’s manual to find out what the levels should be and ensure they don’t dip lower than this. This will mean your car needs less oomph to keep it moving. 6. Turn off the air conditioning. Many cars have air conditioning on by default and it does use an incredible amount of fuel so make sure it’s turned off unless you really need it. Similarly, use your demisters and heated windscreens sparingly. However if it’s really hot do use your

air conditioning because driving with open windows causes drag and is even less cost effective. 7. Avoid super fuels. Unless you have a highly tuned performance car, the difference isn’t noticeable enough to warrant the extra cost. 8. Choose where you fill up. Again, check out www.petrolprices.com and plan ahead. Fill up at a supermarket station when you’re doing your regular shop, particularly if they have a petrol promotion running and if you have a loyalty card attached to the supermarket. Don’t be caught out with an empty tank when your only option is a motorway service station. 9. Combine short trips into one longer one. Cold starts are inefficient so plan ahead and try to do more than one errand when you go out. 10. Last but not least, turn the engine off if stuck in a jam. The general rule of thumb is if you think you’re going to be stationary for more than three minutes, it’s worth switching off. c o n t a c t u s @ d i s c o v e r m e o n v a l l e y.c o .u k

DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE

November According to my diary – and this seems rather improbable, so I double-checked – summertime only ended on 30th October both in Britain and the rest of Europe, which I suppose makes 1st November the second day of winter. Did you notice how much chillier it is all of a sudden? No, neither did I. But, more out of habit than for any practical reason, I lit the fire anyway. The habit goes back to my childhood. I grew up in an enormous draughty old house with nothing as newfangled as central heating but with an open fire in almost every room. (A couple of the bedrooms had gas fires but they were so ancient that daring to light them would have been a leap of faith too great to risk.) And I can tell you from a lot of personal experience that in practical terms at least, open fires are more trouble than they’re worth. Only the drawing room and parlour fires were lit regularly: cleaning the grates, bringing in the kindling and coal, and laying the fires was my chore every morning from the age of about eight. It wasn’t a big chore, but having to go out into the dark damp night to refill the coal-scuttles was a constant source of resentment. Bedrooms, thankfully, were unheated and freezing, since in those days we believed in warm beds in cold rooms: quilts, blankets, thick flannel pyjamas and, for the feeblest, hot water bottles supplied the place of radiators perfectly adequately. It wasn’t a big chore – certainly not as annoying as trying to wash up Sunday lunch with a hot water system that didn’t actually produce hot water; and I wouldn’t have minded it if the open fires had actually heated the rooms they were meant to heat. But they didn’t. The house was over 150 years old, and so were its doors and windows. All the fires did was suck the cold night air through the cracks and gaps in door and window frames

to create howling draughts. If you sat near enough to the fire your front would roast while your rear froze. The hearthrugs could actually be observed progressing worm-wise towards the fireplaces as the draught got underneath them. To add insult to injury, the fires also managed to deposit a fine layer of ash on every horizontal surface while covering the surrounding floors with a crunchy paving of coal dust. Not so bad on bare boards, but the ruin of any carpet. And yet I wouldn’t be without one. We don’t need one: our central heating works fine. We’re toasty, and the fire might only be lit on Christmas Day (which is also the only time of year when the old kitchen clock is wound). Because the point about a real fire is that it is beautiful. Not only does it cast a cheery glow throughout the whole room (whether your own sitting-room or, preferably, the bar of your favourite pub), it also repays close inspection. Flames writhe and flicker; sparks fly amid loud cracks and sputters; hissing jets flare from gas pockets within the coal; logs create intriguing caves of embers that change colour as you watch; and the blaze subsides to create a hypnotic pool into which you stare entranced exactly as your caveman ancestors did millennia ago. With all this going on, who needs TV? So, open fires are difficult to clean, time-consuming to lay and have to be regularly topped up with coal and wood. They’re not that efficient at actually warming the room, but they do make it dirty. Who cares though? It’s November – buy some logs now! by Ted Bruning

DISCOVER HOME

Working from home The curse of the washing I suppose the obvious thing to do is buy a tumble-dryer. But there’s no room for one in the kitchen, and since the utility room became my wife’s stained-glass workshop there’s no room for one in there either. And anyway, just as the occasional blizzard in Britain doesn’t justify investment in heavy-duty Scandinavian-style snow ploughs, so the frequency of occasions when we can’t hang the washing out doesn’t justify our laying out good money on yet more electrical equipment. But lord, lord, how much washing two teenagers generate! And it’s not the girl, either: it’s the boy. When I were a lad, 30 years ago and more, a pair of men’s jeans could go a month between washes. In fact bikers used to pride themselves on having freestanding jeans – you know, the kind that were so infused with motor oil, sweat, beer, and less easy-to-define substances that when you took them off at night (if you took them off at night) they’d amble off into the corner of the bedroom and stand there patiently by themselves until you needed them again. Punks seemed to buy their clothes off tramps. And as for the frequency with which hippies changed their undercrackers – well, best not to go there... But my 17-year-old seems to change his clothes every five minutes, and when he’s not changing his clothes he’s monopolising the shower. Not that I’ve got anything against hygiene, but you can take it too far. Anyway, as I’m the one who “works from home” (hah!), I get to put the wash in. And it’s become a daily chore. I do more washing than I used to do when they were babies. Mind you, that’s because the most important items in their wardrobes then were disposable. Now there’s an idea! Why has no-one come up with disposable clothes for teenagers? There’s a fortune to be made there. On

second thoughts, though, Primark and Matalan do pretty much that already. It’s not the washing I mind. It’s trying to get the wash dry on wet days, whether there’s a full-scale no-holds-barred polar blizzard going on, or whether it’s one of those drizzly days, less dramatic but equally hostile to drying, when the sky hasn’t so much opened as just not closed properly. We used to have the perfect indoor clothes dryer, the gift of an aunt and of 1960s vintage. It was a collapsible wooden rack with a fitted cover and a small electric heater underneath. Damp laundry got really toasty in there, and it did a reasonable job of warming up the conservatory too. But when the little heater died of old age the best replacement we could find was an electric clothes airing rack without even a fitted cover. My wife made one out of old sheets, but even with its cover on it doesn’t get warm enough to prove dough, let alone dry a wash. So it’s radiators. After every bad-weather wash, our radiators are so festooned with clothes that they look like the bunting at a church fete. They do the job, but if you leave the clothes on too long they go completely solid, like the biker’s jeans I was telling you about. I have to remember not to hang chewable items like knickers and socks where the dog can get them – she thinks they’re food – and then there’s the question of delicacy. When friends pop round for a cuppa, do you really want to treat them to an eyeful of your smalls? by Ted Bruning

Counselling with Julie Chivers (MBACP)

at Homewood Chiropractic Clinic

Counselling provides a unique, supportive relationship to explore reasons behind mental discomfort or distress. It can be a place to share this discomfort and feel less isolated with difficult feelings, or a place to understand possible causes, and with that understanding make choices to change patterns and make different decisions. Fully qualified, member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, which in particular governs the code of ethics I operate under. Counselling with Julie Chivers: Stress, as defined by Sue Gerhardt, author and psychotherapist, is about being overwhelmed and lacking sufficient resources to meet the demands being made of us. Some will argue that stress is a modern phenomena, but I am happy to bet that life as a cave dweller was punctuated with stress – enough warmth, enough food, and one or two larger than life predators. The key difference is possibly the nature, or the complexities of what can cause stress today. We still face perceived or actual predators (the boss, siblings, neighbours etc) and and we still have needs that must be met. Stress is a natural part of life and short bouts are generally of no particular concern. However, the real difficulty often occurs when the associated feelings – panic, anxiety, anger, exhaustion, altered appetite etc – are being experienced with no obvious cause.

Stress

Gemma (name changed) found herself overwhelmed with feelings of panic when her working environment changed to open plan offices. Although usually very confident, she initially felt that she would have to find another job. During counselling we were able to link these feelings with those she had when she was younger and shared a bedroom with two other sisters. She had experienced a lack of privacy, respect and regard for her possessions and the current day similarity of the environment triggered an unconscious fear which was stopping her from thinking how to approach the dilemma. Having explored how it was for her with her siblings and how she has approached adult life as a consequence, she was able to access the resources she had never learnt to use, in order to feel calmer and more in control. Elder Abuse Identifying abuse

Abuse of the elderly has been called a ‘hidden and often ignored problem in society’ and is a problem that affects half a million elderly. It can be defined as a single or repeated action against an elderly person which causes them harm or distress and is often carried out by someone the elderly person has some sort of connection with, such as a relative or carer. However, it can be difficult to identify abuse. In part, this may be because it is hard to face the fact that a relative or carer can treat an elderly person in such a way, but also because the person being abused may feel too embarrassed or ashamed to speak out, even when asked. The elderly can suffer abuse in different ways: • Physical abuse - such as manhandling or hitting • Psychological abuse - making them feel worthless or afraid •

Financial abuse – stealing, or pressurising to withdraw funds

Sexual abuse – there are thousands of reported cases each year

Neglect – they are not cared for in an acceptable way

Abuse can happen anywhere. According to one report, around 67% of abuse happens in the elderly person’s own home, 12% in nursing homes and 10% in residential care. It also occurs in other places, such as hospitals or a carer’s home.

Why abuse occurs

The abuser is usually well known to the person and may be a relative, care worker, social or health worker, neighbour, friend or someone they are caring for themselves. The strain of caring for an elder person, especially on a longterm basis, can lead people to act in ways that they shouldn’t, leading to a one-off attack,

30

w w w. d i s c o v e r m e o n v a l l e y.c o.u k

occasional or systematic attacks and deliberate acts of harm. These may be triggered by the break-down of the relationship or the carer’s inability to provide the level of care needed. In nursing homes or residential care, abuse can occur when staff are inadequately trained or supervised and have little management support or guidance.

What to do

Abuse stays hidden because people are afraid to speak out. But abuse has a profound effect on the quality of life. If you feel someone is suffering in some way, try to talk to them alone – it may take a few attempts to find out if there is a problem. Physical abuse may be more easily identifiable than psychological abuse or neglect, but trust your instincts.

Being Aware If the person you know is not acting in their usual way, seems fearful or has signs of physical abuse, gently enquire about how they are being treated. If the matter needs to be taken further, depending on the circumstances, talk to other relatives, the line manager or staff. Explain your concerns and that action needs to be taken. Never feel embarrassed about highlighting abuse. The earlier abuse is spotted, the less long-term harm can be carried out – always trust your instincts if you feel someone is not being treated in the way they should be.
