Hello and Welcome Well, the last flickers of the Indian summer have finally faded, and bright October days can be chilly, so it’s time to put the shorts and sandals away for a few months and dig out the winter clothes. Shouldn’t need to buy anything new: I have plenty of stuff left over from previous years. Which is handy as times are tight, and the more I waste on clothes means the less is available to waste on wine. Anyway, who needs to spend a fortune on a new wardrobe every season? Reviewing the clothes I was wearing last season however, shows some to be looking, well, rather ‘last season’. I’m no slave to fashion, but having bought on impulse because that coat was in the sale, now proves to be a costly error. It was in the sale because by winter 2012 it looks slightly ridiculous rather than cutting edge trendy. So that’s a new coat then. Trousers then, I can’t go wrong there. Well, how I gloated when by the end of the summer I had actually managed to shift a few surplus pounds. Pride comes before a fall though, and
falling is exactly what my trousers are doing now. A quick check of the basics…gloves: only one matching pair, but gardening gloves don’t really count do they. Hats? The cat didn’t sit on the mat, it sat on the hat. Eugh. Shoes - surely there’s some reuse there? Yes! Not letting in water yet and a little tatty but some polish will fix that. But then my 17 year old daughter says “I don’t mean to be rude, but you’re not wearing those out are you?” (Why does she always say that - rude is exactly what she meant to be). Hang on – that’s new gloves, hat, coat, trousers and shoes. This October’s clothes-shop is beginning to look expensive. Think I’ll stay indoors until the January sales... Tania

Lockerley Walk
Walk Distance 4.2 miles Historical Notes Butts Green is probably the site where local archers practised their art in the sixteenth century. In 1512, King Henry VIII passed an act encouraging the use of the longbow and this was confirmed in 1541 by act of parliament. The act ensured that “Every man being the King’s subject, not lame, decrepid (sic) or maimed nor having any other legal cause or impediment and being within the age of 60 years was to exercise regularly with the longbow and every father was to provide his male children between the ages of 7 and 17 years with bows and arrows”. At the age of 17, every young man was required to have his own bow, being trained from a young age at the Butts. The field on your left after passing under the railway arch at the start of the walk was the site of a WW II army camp. Lockerley Hall was built by Francis Dalgety in 1879, but is now owned by the Van Geests. •

The village of Lockerley lies some 5 miles north west of Romsey. On entering the village from the direction of Romsey, turn right at Lockerley Garage and park on the roadside adjacent to the village hall. Walk along the roadside, with the village hall on your left and Butts Green on your right. At the last house on the left, turn left onto a signed footpath. Cross the footbridge over the River Dun. Ignore the footpath merging from the right. Continue straight on under the railway bridge then cross a small wooden bridge over a ditch. Walk to the right of a stile to enter the National Trust Mottisfont Estate. At a ‘T’ junction of paths, turn right then immediately left onto a signed footpath across the centre of a field heading towards woodland. Cross the footbridge spanning a ditch to enter the woodland and immediately turn right along a wide earthen path. The path initially runs parallel to the field boundary then bears left climbing steadily uphill. At a ‘T’ junction at the top of the rise, Cadbury Farm buildings are on your right. the signed footpath. Ignore the footpaths branching left and right, go straight ahead following the yellow way marker. The path descends gently to a footbridge over a ditch. Cross the track beyond the bridge and continue straight ahead along the signed footpath. On reaching a field boundary, cross the stile into the field and turn left. Walk along the fence-line then cross a stile into second field. Cross this field diagonally right keeping a small clump of trees within the field to your left. The path is indistinct. Head for the far corner of the field adjacent to two oaks growing close together in the fence-line. With Lockerley Hall in the mid-distance on the right, cross a stile into the field beyond. Head diagonally left towards some conifer trees at the left hand edge of a spinney. Go through a metal kissing gate and into the spinney following the fence-line on your right. Cross the footbridge over a brook discharging from the lake on your right. Pass through a kissing gate into a field. Continue straight ahead across the field towards the left hand corner of a copse. Cross the stile into the copse. Follow the path through the woodland keeping the field boundary to your left. Emerge into a field and head diagonally ...Continued on page 8

Walk through the pub car park and emerge onto the road. Turn left from the pub along the road for approximately 50 yards. Cross the road onto a signed bridleway on the right, adjacent to the East Tytherley village boundary sign. Continue straight ahead keeping the field boundary on your right. At the top corner of the field, at a crossing of tracks, turn left across a stile. Bear diagonally left along a grass track. Eventually, walk through a wooden barrier to emerge onto a lane. into Top Green. Bear left at the fork in the road. Walk along the road to the far corner of the green. As the road turns back to the right, turn left onto a track. Follow the track down to a metal gate. Walk to the left of this gate and walk across Critchell’s Green heading for a pair of metal gates on the other side of the green. On reaching the gates, turn left across a stile in the hedgerow and into a field. The path is indistinct, but walk diagonally right heading for the far end of a cultivated beech hedge. Cross a stile and follow the right hand fence line back to the main road. Emerge by Lockerley Garage. Walk across the road to Butts Green and your car.
Thanks to local resident Mrs J Brace for this walk. We were pleased to donate to her requested charity for this feature. If you have anything you’d like to contribute you could raise money for your charity of choice too. Send to tania@discovermagazines.co.uk.

1st Floor Gallery Keith Newton, one of the first framers to qualify as Fine Art Trade Guild Commended, celebrates 30 years as a Picture Framer this year, making 1st Floor Gallery one of the oldest independent traders in Romsey. The gallery has recently been refurbished and over 500 picture frame mouldings are now displayed. The upstairs gallery has a light and airy feel, showing a varied selection of prints, limited editions and originals. 1st Floor Gallery is marking the anniversary with a major exhibition of work by Barry Peckham R.O.I, S.E.A, A.R.S.M.A and Wendy Jelbert S.W.A. The exhibition, “Our Beautiful Test Valley” runs from 26th October to 10th November and will show over 50 new works, with the Test Valley as the central theme. Barry Peckham was born and lives in the New Forest. Full membership of the R.O.I, puts him within a group of Britain’s finest contemporary artists, highlighted by the fact that he received the ROI award for best oil painting. Membership of the Equestrian Society, where he won the Cuneo medal, and associate membership of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, illustrates that he is doing all the right things. Confident brushstrokes, hazy backgrounds and a powerful sky, combined with an understanding of horse movement and anatomy are characteristic of Barry’s work.

Southampton. She has written many books, featured in art videos and writes articles for 'Leisure Painter' magazine. Wendy has won various prizes throughout her career, including 'Best Exhibit' at the S.W.A. Her work is constantly evolving and she likes to experiment, giving freedom and originality to her paintings. She works in mixed media, often using acrylic, pastel, pen and ink, and gouache, in one piece to achieve the desired effect.

Sir Harold Hillier Gardens In the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year, the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is celebrating the completion of its redesigned Centenary Board which is set to become one of the Gardens most iconic features. At an impressive 250 metres long it is believed to be the longest Double Border in the country and possibly Europe. Head of Collections at The Gardens David Jewell said: “This is one of our most ambitious projects which will help lead the Gardens into the next 25 to 50 years. As well as traditional perennial and woody plantings for the summer there are plenty of surprises including many newon-the-scene plants. We hope the plant combinations will inspire our visitors and provide thought provoking ideas for their own gardens”. “This project has been five years in the planning and taken two years of dedicated work by landscape designers Julia Fogg Associates and The Gardens’ horticultural team plus many of the Gardens’ 150 volunteers.” With over 30,000 plants, the border will provide an extravaganza of colour, textures and shapes. Starting with spring bulbs and hellebores followed by an encyclopaedia of summer flowering perennials such as lupins, peonies, irises and geraniums, autumn- flowering asters and a

range of grasses. A key element of the new design, for the first time, is the stunning white granite paving which provides a front edge detail to the beds. Importantly it also allows visitors to enjoy the border all year round and in all weather conditions. Walking on the paving in winter, while enjoying the soft grass centre during summer time strolls. Together with the wonderful annual Art in the Garden displays which run to the 30th October, a trip to the Gardens makes for a wonderful day out. www3.hants.gov.uk/hilliergardens.

DISCOVER LIFE BEGINS
Life Begins Don’t let your dream cottage turn into a nightmare It’s the stuff of Daily Mail competitions. It’s the fantasy that drives the holiday cottage industry: when once a year we satisfy our desire for rural living by renting our own dream cottage. But what happens when – like newly retired couple Gary and Linda Speed from Basingstoke - you decide to live the dream? Gary and Linda wanted to buy a spacious, detached cottage in the West Country with offstreet parking, original features and countryside views. Having around £300,000 in the bank, they were confident that they would find their perfect home. However, they were initially dismayed to find that while house prices may have slumped in recent years, the market for period properties in popular areas remains surprisingly buoyant. The couple eventually found a reasonably-priced cottage that ticked all the right boxes. Located in a quiet village outside a popular Dorset tourist town, the attractive stone-built, thatched property had no central heating and lacked a modern kitchen and bathroom, but it did have a large garden all the period features they wanted. “We knew that it needed updating,” says Linda. “But it was absolutely beautiful and we couldn’t understand why someone else hadn’t already snapped it up.” However, as the various surveys and building reports they had commissioned began to pile up, the true cost of the renovation was revealed. The stonework needed re-pointing, the electrical wiring had decayed and the damaged thatch would cost thousands to replace, so Gary and Linda reluctantly pulled out. They had incurred costs along the way – solicitors’ fees plus the cost of the surveys and reports – but they had avoided the nightmare of a ‘money pit’ purchase by taking
16
c a l l D i s c o v e r M a g a z i n e s o n 02 3 8 02 6 6 3 8 8
professional advice early on. If Gary and Linda’s dreams didn’t match up to reality, they were not alone. In a recent survey by AA Home Emergency Response, 2,005 people were questioned about their ideal home. 28% of respondents fantasised about a owning a property in a rural location, with a large, open-plan kitchen/diner and living area featuring high on their ‘must-have’ list. 48% of the sample wanted sea views while slightly more than half prioritised views of mountains or open fields. As anyone familiar with the British countryside will know, rather than enjoying expansive views, many village dwellings face directly onto a busy road. A large kitchen/diner is also a rare find – particularly if the cottage is Grade II listed and the local authority does not permit structural alterations. In fact the competition for properties that ‘have it all’ is so intense that in sought-after areas you will need to spend £500,000 plus if you want a property with good internal space that enjoys excellent countryside or seaside views. Buyers on a more modest budget will inevitably have to compromise. After their experience in Dorset, Gary and Linda seriously considered giving up their dream of a West Country home, but during a weekend trip to Somerset a ‘For Sale’ sign caught their eye. Their final purchase was a small, terraced town house that faced directly onto the street - a far cry from the ‘roses round the door’ cottage with a large garden they had originally envisaged. As Linda explains: “We knew we had to compromise on our dream, but in the end it didn’t really feel like a compromise. It was different, but we loved the village and somehow the chemistry was right.” by Claudia Leaf

DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story What’s In A Name? Wally put his tools away in the van and then went back into the house to collect the bag of off-cuts and rubbish. Some carpet fitters would have left it for the householder to deal with, but that was not his way. The lady paid him by cheque for the work, saying how pleased she was with the fine job he had done. As he climbed back into his van, it once again crossed his mind that tomorrow was his 65th birthday and the day on which he would be retiring. Thank goodness he had organised a pension all those years ago. He and Mary would be reasonably well provided for and should never be broke. All the way home, a journey of just under half an hour, thoughts of his long and active working life filled his mind. He remembered that he had first watched a carpet being fitted when he was only ten years old and had marvelled at what he saw. He was totally enthralled and decided there and then to take up that profession when he left school. Having achieved only average grades at school, he was extremely pleased to secure a job with a carpet company at the age of 16 in a local firm. Starting as a general assistant, within a few years Wally had graduated to being a fully-fledged fitter. He had stayed with that outfit for just four more years before starting his own one man company. He had always thoroughly enjoyed the job; the process of first cutting and fixing the edging strips, fitting the underlay and finally putting down the carpet itself, stretching and trimming it to be a perfect fit. The sense of achievement when he stood back and eyed up a finished job had never
left him. Astounding! Arriving home, he completely unloaded the van, all his tools and everything to do with the carpet business, and put them away in the garden shed. The empty van reversed into the garage and the offcuts he’d collected earlier were put to one side to taken to the dump in due course. “Don’t suppose I’ll ever need you again, old dear. Wonder if I can sell you and make a few quid”, Wally said aloud as he patted the bonnet of his old red Ford Transit. He went indoors, exchanged greetings and had a cuddle with his wife Mary, who put the kettle on to make a cup of tea. While she was doing that, he changed out of his work clothes for what he sincerely hoped was the very last time. OK, it was not unlikely that he might do some fitting for friends now and again, but not for a living. When the tea was made he sat down in the kitchen to drink it. He patted Mary’s hand and asked, “are we all packed then, sweetheart?” She, with a mouthful of tea and biscuits, merely nodded and smiled. They would be taking a long flight to South Africa in a couple of days to visit their son and his family. It would be their first flight anywhere and they were both a bit apprehensive. He breathed out, sat back, relaxed and, as he did so, reflected for the umpteenth time that his parents may well have been under some psychic influence when he was born. Perhaps they’d predicted what he would do with his life when, at the age of eight months, they had had him christened in the local church and thus he had become, would you believe, Walter Wall! by Eric Godley

Local Volunteers Needed
For Life Experiences is a not-for-profit organisation based at our Fishing Lakes in Ampfield. We run educational courses and tuition using angling and outdoor pursuits to engage people who would not normally access the outdoor environment including adults, families and young people form deprived inner city areas. Running the centre and fishing lakes is a rewarding and time consuming job and we are in desperate need of some local volunteers to help with the general maintenance around the lakes on a weekly basis. Ideally we are looking for a group of half a dozen nice, local people who could be left to their own devices to carry out gardening, pruning, grass cutting and general work around our lovely lakes. The site is a beautiful one and hopefully those who get involved will feel like they are contributing to a good cause. We are a small, friendly and busy enterprise and need a dedicated group to help with the work. There will always be tea, coffee, tools and a smile waiting for those who are helping out and we would like to build up a regular group who can take ownership of the tasks rather than different groups every week. HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE This morning I went to see Florence Nightingale’s burial place at the tiny church of St Margaret of Antioch in the village of Wellow in Hampshire. When Florence, a national heroine, died at the age of 90, her relatives were offered a state funeral in Westminster Abbey. They declined, preferring the parish church of her home. My interest in Florence Nightingale was triggered by the book Spike Island by Philip Hoare. The book is an extraordinarily detailed account of the construction and subsequent operation of the grandiose Royal Military Hospital at Netley, beside Southampton Water. The intention was that the hospital should be w w w. d i s c o v e r m e o n v a l l e y.c o .u k
grander than any such establishment before it, a symbol of national pride. Unfortunately, it was also a symbol of architectural vanity at the expense of functional efficiency. Many aspects of the building’s design were so poor from a clinical viewpoint that they would work against rather than for the recovery of the patients. From her experience at Scutari in the Crimean war, Florence could see many flaws in the proposed design of the Netley hospital. She took an opportunity to describe her misgivings to Queen Victoria herself and subsequently to figures in the government of the day and their advisers. At one point she set off from her home in Embley Park to nearby Broadlands to ...Continued on page 26

tell Lord Palmerston in person of her concerns. As a result, Palmerston wrote to his Secretary of State, “It seems to me that all consideration of what would best tend to the comfort and recovery of the patients has been sacrificed to the vanity of the architect…Pray therefore stop all progress in the work until the matter can be duly considered.” This intervention by a woman came a hundred years before feminism and fifty before the suffragettes. The Florence Nightingale of popular myth is a ministering angel patrolling the wards in the barrack hospital at Scutari. The reality was a woman who had been appointed to the post of Superintendent of Nursing in the hospital at Scutari. She became a national hero for her tireless efforts to improve the standard of nursing care of the sick and wounded. The church of St Margaret of Antioch lies down the narrowest of country lanes, well away from the main residences and limited facilities of the village of Wellow. The church is generally described as being in East Wellow, but there is no administrative distinction between East and West Wellow, which are both within the one parish boundary, so the distinction between them is more or less confined to the OS map and popular parlance. The church itself is very small and quite plain. It has some faded and flaking wall paintings, said by Pevsner to be probably early C13. Inevitably, there is a good deal of Florence Nightingale memorabilia. At the west end, screen panels display various items relating to Florence, including a model of a fair-haired
young woman holding a lantern, who bears no resemblance to Florence. In the nave, on the south side, a window sill is given over to photographs of her, along with a wreath, its predecessor donated by an American Florence Nightingale society. There is also a memorial tablet set into the south wall. Viewed from the south porch, the Nightingale family’s white marble memorial shines conspicuously among the lichened headstones of their less august neighbours. Three sides of the memorial commemorate her parents and her elder sister Parthenope. Florence hated any form of publicity and longed for anonymity, which explains the brevity of the fourth side of the memorial, inscribed simply “F. N. – Born 12 May 1820 – Died 13 August 1910”. But her wish for anonymity was doomed. People from all over the globe still make a pilgrimage to this simple country churchyard to pay homage to her.
