Discover Bitterne

Page 1

Dear Residents The first edition of Discover Bitterne published in June was very well received both by advertisers and locals who kindly emailed me with information about their local club (see pgs 34-35) and items for What’s On (p6) plus I have now have a local writer, Ben Harris whose first article is about the lesser known facts about Southampton which I hope you find interesting (see p20). More from Ben in future issues! It can take time for residents who receive a free magazine to pick up on the value of a publication so I’ve repeated some of the local information but please let me have anything you feel is worth including by emailing me at melanie@discover magazines.co.uk. I research the What’s On for all the magazines I publish which covers Totton, Romsey, Southampton, Chandlers Ford and as far as Meon Valley so I hope you don’t mind me adding items that are outside of Bitterne but it’s a

editorial 4

shame not to include them when most events are no more than a short drive away. I’m running a feature this month on the National Garden Scheme (see p31) which highlights gardens open nearest to Bitterne in August and September. Like going to a new build show home other people’s gardens draw visitors out of curiosity as much as for inspiration (and for a scrummy cream tea at a few!) I hope the sun shines so we are all encouraged to get out and ‘discover’ so many local delights.

Do you pay Nursing Home Fees? “There is nothing distressing more after losing a parent than finding out that their savings did not need to be spent on their care home fees. The system has let many people down very badly indeed.” this is the view of Jonathan anderson, an experienced Will and trust Specialist and founder of www.recovernursinghomefees.com.

acknowledged that this has been unfair and have set aside a billion pounds in compensation.“ Compensation claims are open to anyone who was/is paying for residential care from April 2004 but there are deadlines to register cases, the earliest of which is September 2012. “If you think that the fee assessment was not properly handled then it’s imperative to start the ball rolling now” Jonathan told us. “Our no win no fee policy means there is absolutely no barrier to anyone starting the process.”

Jonathan is currently progressing dozens of compensation assessments in the south of England where the lack of standardised criteria used in assessing who pays Nursing Home fees has potentially left families tens of thousands of pounds worse off.

Once a case is accepted, a home visit prepares all the paperwork and all cases are submitted with an expert medical report produced by Senior Medical Practioners with experience of elderly care.

“Unfortunately differences in assessment between different UK Health Authorities has created a postcode lottery in whether the Primary Care Trust (PCT) or individuals have had to pay for care” Jonathan explained. “The Government has

“Compensation is not going to bring back a relative who has sadly passed away but helping to recover a financial legacy that was lost due to poor PCT practices is very important for the families left behind.” Editorial supplied by recovernursinghomefees.com

Are You Wearing

The Wrong Size Bra? are the shoulder straps digging into your shoulders? is the back of your bra riding up? are your breasts bulging out of the cup? does your bra move when you raise your arms? is your bra so old it’s losing its elasticity and support? do you suffer from neck, shoulders and backache? if any of your answers were yeS then please read on. It is really important that you have your bra fitting checked regularly ideally by a bra fitting specialist and at least once a year. You will not remain the same bra size throughout your life. Weight loss, pregnancy, breast-feeding, a new exercise regime, your monthly cycle, contraceptive pill and HRT can all change the shape and size of your breasts as well as your general size. The effect of the wrong size bra is that it will not provide enough support for your breasts meaning your muscles have to do all the work. The British Chiropractic Association have warned that wearing the wrong bra size could lead to many problems, including back pain, restricted breathing, abrasions, breast pain and poor posture. An ill-fitting bra will almost certainly cause back pain as you get older due to the adverse effects on the shoulders and chest. However the right fitting will mean improved posture, minimised back pain, uplifted breasts and even an improved body shape. Editorial supplied by City Chiropractic Clinic

Southampton Secrets Southampton has a rich and intriguing history, with many well-known claims to fame. among these is the famed story of the ill-fated titanic, which of course sunk on its maiden voyage a hundred years ago after leaving this city. indeed, the city was once the gateway to england; 80% of all visitors arriving in this country travelled through Southampton. the Spitfire was designed and built here; without this amazing flying machines’ presence during the battle of britain in World War ii, i would more than likely be writing this article in German! Our fine city has been sung about by the Beatles, written about by Shakespeare and has been on a wonderfully rich and varied historical journey through time. We have even spawned the odd celebrity here and there, although admittedly they are not all A-listers! These include the comedy legend Benny Hill, whose hit song Ernie (the fastest Milkman in the west) was based on his own milk round in nearby Eastleigh. Naturalist TV presenter Chris Packham, R&B singer Craig David, X-factor winner - Matt Cardle, Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, gardening expert Charlie Dimmock and the artist John Everett Millais all have roots within Southampton. However, we thought you might enjoy hearing a few of the lesser known but nonetheless fascinating (and in some cases rather pointless!) nuggets of trivia about Southampton. Starting with some rather interesting history from way back in 1415, when as a result of the so called Southampton Plot, three men were executed right in front of the town's Bargate for conspiring to murder King Henry V. The trial took place in what is now the Red Lion pub, and two of the men were subsequently beheaded the third suffered the gruesome torture of being hung, drawn and quartered. Just keep it mind next time you are walking through the Bargate! A few days later King Henry sailed to France to defeat the French in the battle of Agincourt. Sport, too, has some interesting points of note, in particular football. Of course, Southampton boasts

a fine team, whose history is reasonably well known, however, not so well known is that a Southampton based gentleman by the name of Charles William Miller travelled to Brazil and just so happened to take with him two soccer balls and a set of Hampshire FA rules in his suitcase, thus introducing the sport to the Brazilians. The rest is history! In addition to this, and perhaps equally as interesting, historians at nearby Beaulieu claim to have record of the oldest football match ever contested. It would appear that Southampton has had quite an effect on the beautiful game. Aside from the incredible maritime history of Southampton, we can also boast one of the most expensive water crossings in the world, the Isle of Wight Ferry. The Hover craft was designed and built in nearby Hythe by Sir Christopher Cockerell. There is also a ferry service between Hythe and Southampton that departs from the 4th longest pier in the world and the oldest working pier train. Southampton is not only next to the water, it is also above it, a hot water aquifer in fact, which feeds the only Geo Thermal power station in the UK, and supplies power to West Quay among other buildings. This contributes to it being one of the lowest carbon emitting cities in the country, despite holding the British national record June temperature, 35.6°C (96.1°F) since 1976. It's a little hard to believe with the June we have had this year! The Cenotaph in Whitehall, London was modelled on Southampton’s Cenotaph, so there will always be a small piece of Southampton in the capital city! Not only are we linked with London, but Southampton is also twinned with Le Havre in France, Rems-Murr-Kreis in Germany Kalisz and Trieste in Poland, Hampton in USA Quingdao in Chinan and finally Busan, South Korea. Hopefully there are one or two things here you never knew about our city, but if not then we have one left up our sleeve… and this one is perhaps the least useful fact of all - In 1955, Southampton was the first town to sample… Fish Fingers! by Ben Harris

A Community First Responder is a person trained as a minimum in basic life support and the use of a defibrillator, who attends a potentially lifethreatening emergency. This response may be by the statutory ambulance service or complementary to it. They use life-saving skills, such as the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED), to provide early and often vital intervention for patients suffering life-threatening emergencies in the immediate vicinity of where they live or work. Complete Cash Management Ltd Call Carolyn Hobbs - 07753 422596 www.completecashmanagement.co.uk All businesses have one thing in common; getting paid on time for sales. Simple you would think, but it can often provide the most challenges. With over 15 years experience in the debt recovery business, across a variety of industries, Complete Cash Management Limited could be your solution to this potential hazard. Just because your debtor might pay a bit slower, doesn’t mean you don’t want them as a customer, obtaining payment and maintaining your working relationship is our objective. Take a six month overdue debt of £1,000. Using legislation available, you can add late payment interest and/or costs to the amount owed. If you wish to use this it can substantially reduce or even cover your debt recovery costs. Late payment compensation would be £70 and interest would be £42, debt recovery fee would be £111. No recovery, no fee or hidden costs. From a single debt to an entire ledger, the service is bespoke. Complete Cash Management Limited helps improve cash-flow in more ways than debt recovery, though.
