DISCOVER MotorIng IT’S GOT
gadgets gizmos AND
A PLENTY WHAT GADGETS. What gizmos. Oh, and what a drive... You can have so much fun playing with the new Honda Civic that you can forget it's actually a very nice car to drive. But we'll get to that later. First... those gadgets. First of all, the dashboard. Drive like a madman with a leaden right foot, and the dash turns blue. Ease off a bit, and be a little more sensible, and it's a bluey-green colour. Drive like an eco-god, and, yes, it goes green. You can have such fun trying to keep the dash green. I always thought the lowest gear possible is always the most fuel efficient. No, it's not. But try it for yourself. There's also the little arrow beneath the speedo that says when you should change gear to keep the green colour glowing. But that's not all. I picked up the Civic ES 2.2 Diesel from from Hendy Honda Southampton invvvvv West Quay Road
(it's opposite Ikea, if you don't know it) and got caught in traffic. When the engine cut out at the first junction, I was ready to start cursing. My teenage daughter laughed. She's learning to drive, and the belief the old man had stalled a shiny new Civic was enough to have her in fits. I couldn't believe it. Surely I didn't stall the thing. Then the eco penny dropped. It was the auto stop-start function kicking in. Cruise to a stop anywhere, and the engine cuts out. When you put it in gear ready to pull away again, then the engine automatically fires up. Pride restored, I went on my merry way. Then I needed to reverse. On the dashboard, the radio details disappeared and in their place up popped the screen for the camera hidden away in the number plate on the back. reversing into a car parking spot has never been easier (even at Ikea - and you know what that is like...) The gadgets didn't stop there. There's cruise control and a speed limiter. There's the usual Bluetooth for the mobile phone. The stereo's great. So what about the drive? After you've finished playing with the gadgets and actually get to drive the thing, it's super. With the diesel you'll get around 65 miles to the gallon, as long as your dash stays green. There's plenty of zoom when you pull away, and going through the gears (just ignore the blue dashboard...) there's plenty of zip. Cruising on the motorway is a delight. Just one thing to beware. The Civic's like the Tardis. Smallish to look at on the outside and so spacious on the inside. It's easy to go a little faster than you imagine as the ride is so smooth and quiet. Any downsides? The split rear screen takes a little getting used to - but to be honest, when I first climbed into the car I thought I'd never get used to it, and 20 minutes later I'd forgotten it was an issue. I nearly bought a Civic a few years ago when we were looking for a family car. The wife persuaded me to go for something else. She does sometimes make good choices (well, she's got me, for a start). But boy was that car the wrong choice...
Editorial by Colin Channon Colin Channon is editor-in-chief of several weekly newspapers along the south coast, from Chichester to Worthing – and the papers are among the country’s biggest-selling weeklies in the country. He feels he has the perfect job – every now and again, he gets the chance to drive a posh new car for a weekend, hoping that taking it home will finally persuade his wife to smile and give in to his pitiful requests to acknowledge his mid-life crisis, and let him get a car that is newer, shinier and more exciting.

patrick lichfield : The Polaroids A stunning exhibition of photographs by Patrick Lichfield is being displayed at Mottisfont until the 1st July, offering a unique insight into his glamorous world. It presents fascinating montages of the Polaroids he took on every shoot, on display for the first time. It also presents a striking group of Lichfield’s iconic photographs of the royal, the rich and the famous, including a young Bob Geldof, Sir john Gielgud and joanna Lumley. Particularly striking – and timely in this Diamond jubilee year – is Lichfield’s double portrait of HRH The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Lichfield started out in the 1960s as a photographer’s assistant on £3 a week, but over the next four decades he gained international renown, contributing numerous now-famous photographs to newspapers, prestigious magazines and
private collections. Though he was the 5th Earl of Lichfield and cousin to the Queen, in his professional life he was known simply as Patrick Lichfield. Over the years – 1971 to 2004 - Lichfield produced thousands of Polaroids – preparatory ‘snaps’ of enormous interest and insight into his sitters. Lichfield once said, “Polaroids tell us so much of that moment in time, and my own diaries – if ever I wrote them – would contain dozens of them.” Now visitors can gaze into his dazzling world and enjoy this unique record of his illustrious career.
