English sunny days: rare but so beautiful

Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston

In many ways we are blessed living in the central south of the UK. We don’t have the wet weather of the west, the drier cold weather of the east or the wet and cold weather of the north. We aren’t far from the coast or a wonderful forest. Employment is generally good. And the road and rail infrastructure means it’s easy to reach other areas when we want to. But the traffic at this time of year! Everything that makes this a good place to live, also makes it a good place to come on holiday. It’s not unusual in our house that we decide not to travel out on a sunny day, just because we know it will be so busy. Part of the problem of course is that when we take weekdays off – when the traffic is quieter - we often use that time to go on holiday in other areas ourselves, so becoming a traffic problem in someone else’s lovely area of the world! What we’ve found in the past is that if a good day or two is forecast during the week in this area, we move heaven and earth to free our diaries. Because if you can make the most of it, it’s honestly hard to beat Hampshire and Wiltshire. There’s so much to see and do, you don’t need to pack much more than a picnic blanket, and the costs are minimal. It’s just that those good days are a bit scarce, but there will be some this summer I promise. Until the autumn.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes My Sunday morning began like any other. Settled into my favourite chair with my brew, a slice of freshly buttered toast and two episodes of Broadchurch on catch-up, I was just about to take my first sip of tea when in walked Sarah, closely followed by Hannah and Emily. Sarah, wearing a benevolent, concerned expression on her face gently relieved me of my steaming mug, sat me down and said, “Tom, What we are about to say is said out of love and concern, nothing else.” Then I realised what was happening, it was a family intervention! But an intervention about what? Was my customary Friday night pint of mild down the Paraffin Lamp getting out of hand? Was my chocolate habit becoming a cause for concern? What could it be? I decided to confront the issue head on. “Listen, if anyone is wondering why all the cream eggs keep disappearing, I want you all to know that from now on I promise to share the value pack with everyone else.” A confused silence descended. The three women in my life all stared at each other. Chocolate Eggs it seemed, were not the issue. Sarah pressed on. “We are gathered here today Tom 8

to tell you that, well, you are a bit of a scruff.” “A what?” Next to pipe up was Hannah. “Yes Dad, look at that jumper, look at those jeans?” “What’s wrong with them?” “Dad, who wears hiking socks, walking shoes and a snood to the gym?” “Yes Tom, the girls are embarrassed. Their friends are talking about you. You need a new wardrobe, urgently”, said Sarah. “Well ok, I’ll go through my stuff and - “ “Too late, we’ve done it for you.” Then Sarah, much to my dismay, produced a black bin liner full of my precious old clothes. Sweatshirts, jeans and - horror of horrors - my Bruce Springsteen 2005 tour t-shirt. “Not the Boss! Please?” “No Tom, this lot is off to the charity shop in the precinct. Now, grab your coat and let’s go shopping! Err, on second thoughts, leave the coat, let’s just go.” In the vast outlet clothes store I wandered aimlessly around, fingering the rails without a clue what I was doing. Eventually I held up a pair of jeans with the very pleasing price tag of £24.99.

“Sarah, what about these?” Sarah examined my choice. “You haven’t just grabbed the cheapest have you?” “Not at all.” “Right put them back and go try on these.” I examined the pair picked by Sarah. To my untrained eye, they looked identical to the jeans I’d just chosen. Identical that is, except for the price. Sarah’s were fifty pounds dearer. “Why would I pay seventy-five pounds for something I can get for-twenty five, I just don’t…” Grabbing the seat of the expensive jeans, Sarah pointed to a yellow logo stitched onto the rear pocket. “Look! That’s why. They are designer.” “So, they sew a little squiggle onto the pocket and they charge you treble the price? Are you being serious?” The look from Sarah told me that yes, she was indeed being deadly serious. She picked out another pair from the rack, handed both of them over and pointed in the direction of the changing rooms. I sloped away to the curtained-off area where a glum-faced child handed me an orange circle on which was printed a number two. I battled with the first pair for

what seemed like an age. Eventually I gave up, deciding that in the words of my Auntie Joyce they “Wouldn’t go near me.” The second pair I actually managed to heave myself into. And a more uncomfortable pair of pants I couldn’t imagine. Baggy round the crotch and barely covering the posterior, I assumed that this particular “Designer” - in his hurry to stitch on the magic money squiggle, had stamped them with the wrong size. Outside, I informed Sarah of the manufacturer’s error. Sarah, shaking her head in defeat, flung back at me the cheap pair I had originally chosen. I tried them on right there in the store. Of course, they fitted perfectly. Eye rolls from Sarah, a triumphant beam from her husband. The next day Sarah arrived home from work to find me wearing the new jeans and another, different purchase. “Tom! What are you doing wearing that tatty old Bruce Springsteen T-shirt? I thought I gave that thing away?” “It’s very simple darling, yesterday afternoon, decided to go to the charity shop and do my bit for cancer research...”

RECIPE

Summer Pudding Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour, plus overnight chilling time This is a classic summer British dessert made with just a few simple ingredients. Make the day before serving to allow plenty of time for the sweet berry juices to soften the bread. Serve with softly whipped cream, Greek style yoghurt or tangy crème fraiche.

Ingredients: • 275g small strawberries, hulled and halved • 275g raspberries • 175g blueberries • 100g black or red currants, removed from stalks • 175g caster sugar • 10 large slices medium-sliced white bread (preferably one day old) • 1 whole strawberry, to decorate

TIP Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape. 14

1. Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.

2. Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways.

3. Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps.

4. Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary.

5. Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice.

6. To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.

Mould, Damp or Salt on the walls? Almost every homeowner at some time in their life experiences damp problems. Mildew, efflorescence (salts on the surface of the wall) and blistering plaster means it needs treating as soon as possible and the plaster replacing with a “breathable” alternative. BKM Mannesmann UK ltd has a simple but technologically advanced treatment system for rising and penetrative damp. The process protects, inside or outside walls of all construction types and materials. The technology is developed from extensive experience in Germany and is now available in your area. The BKM product ‘pico-coats’ all the pores in the material, sealing out water, but allows it to dry naturally. A microscopic polymer creates a complete hydrophobic barrier in all types of brick and stone-work, masonry, cement and different lime renders even where moisture is at 100%. BKM also has an external breathable wall protection application, which seals all types of ender, salt impregnated brick-work, lime based paints and render-with a Guarantee for 25 yrs. Untreated

GARDENING

The Grass Can Be Greener by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com With summer well under way, gardens will need more water than the rain is giving them, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a good-looking and productive garden? If possible, wait until the autumn to plant out trees, shrubs and climbers – it will be far harder for them to establish properly now and they are more likely to suffer serious setbacks. However, if you can’t avoid planting, improve the soil texture by digging and forking in plenty of garden compost, well-rotted manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better equipped to retain moisture – sandy soil will then hold water more effectively whilst clay soil is less likely to crack. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants,

and means you will spend far less time watering later on. It is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth which are now available. If the soil is well watered before the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep moisture in the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Mulching will also help to keep down weeds. In drier areas of your garden, try to use drought tolerant plants. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now. Make the most of any rainfall by fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory

20

or garage, and divert the rain straight into one or more water butts. You can also fit a water diverter to the downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly. Unless there’s no alternative, always water in the evening or extremely early in the morning, which drastically reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, and means that there is far less chance of foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight. Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a light drizzling of water and return a few minutes later - you will find that the water penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. Excessive watering on a very dry surface is likely to lead to a lot of run off and wastage.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Salisbury East

Village area & manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Money-Saving Ideas For The Heart Of The Home A kitchen is the heart of the home. It's a room that's used more than almost any other. But there are times when a kitchen doesn't fulfil your needs. Some can be dated, others might be poorly designed and, in extreme cases, they are complete writeoffs.

Major home improvement projects always seem daunting; but there’s far less upheaval with a Dream Doors kitchen makeover. For a door changeover they are usually in and out in one day, and for a facelift, including new worktop, sink and tap, they will probably need an extra day.

In most properties the kitchen is well laid out and has been designed with the 'work triangle' in mind. Many people find that while the kitchen in their home is perfectly practical, it has become tired and in need of a lift. And that's where local supplier Dream Doors has the solution.

The company's name, however, is a misnomer, as Dream Doors supplies much more than just the doors. So when a kitchen is beyond refurbishment or the layout doesn't work and the only option is to start afresh, Dream Doors can supply and install a brand new kitchen.
