What a wonderful time was had by all in June for the Diamond Jubilee. I thought the weekend was fabulous (if you turn a blind eye to the weather) and a real boost to our spirits and national pride. It was actually delightful to be able to celebrate something just for itself with no commercial or charitable angle. Mel and I are personal supporters of charity, and business supporters of commercial efforts, but sometimes it’s just nice to have fun for fun’s sake. But here’s the other extreme: I was doing some research this month for the ‘what’s on’ listings for July and August. I had originally considered mentioning the big sporting event taking place in London this year. Do I mean ‘The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games’? Yes I do, but the brand protection around the event is so fierce that I’m terrified of getting it wrong. In print I have to use the exact approved phrasing and be absolutely sure that we do nothing which in any way implies we – or any of our advertisers – are linked with the event. A friend in Wales, where the torch procession has already passed through, said that his college age son and friends were told to cover up their t-shirts for fear that some photographs or TV footage might show the t-shirt brands thus upsetting sponsors of ‘the 2012 Games’. Don’t expect to see any pubs advertising that they are televising the event; not allowed. Or anybody using any play on words either – a village committee were told they couldn’t use the term Olympicnic. So enjoy ‘the event’ on the television or in the press with their huge legal departments, because we don’t have that, so when it comes to talking about it in here, I’m going to run a mile (groan, forgive the pun). It’s a shame though. I understand the need for funding, but the money aspect – in my opinion – completely overshadows what The 2012 Games are about. I thought it was a celebration of individual and team sporting excellence. But right now it feels like it’s all about the money. Working from your Garden With the rise in fuel costs, and the need to work longer hours, many companies can see the advantage of allowing their staff to work from home at least part-time. Equally the advent of fast broadband has enabled many thousands of people to start up their own business without renting an office. However, this arrangement can also have its drawbacks particularly that of sharing your working space with your family. Their noise is likely to disrupt you, and your paperwork, computer equipment and other office paraphernalia doesn’t create a homely environment for them. The solution is to have a dedicated space and

the traditional option is to build an extension or convert a garage. This can be expensive and time-consuming though, particularly the planning process and negotiating with mortgage companies to raise the funding. Target Building have another option for you: a garden building, constructed from structurally graded treated timber. Well insulated to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer, the double glazed windows give maximum natural light. Fitted out with lighting, power points, telephone and broadband connections, you have all the convenience of being home based, yet in a proper office environment free from distractions. Business owner Gary Caws told us “Most people don’t realise that construction of this type of building can fall within Permitted Development Rights, therefore removing the need for planning permission. Garden buildings are attractive and they add value to your property and can also be used as a summer house or play room.” For your custom garden building call Gary Caws for a no obligation survey and quote on 01329 835539 or 07580 291179 or email gary.caws@ btconnect.com.

DISCOVER A PROVERBIAL LIFE...

A Proverbial Life... Nothing ventured, nothing gained A Star Is Born

I have decided that I’m going to be famous. I’m going to be a celeb! I’ll be talked about in gossip columns, ‘papped’ on holiday in Marbella, employed to promote the latest ‘must have’ items, and generally adored by millions. I’ll wear my sunglasses indoors, carry a giant handbag and clutch a bottle of water wherever I go. I may even have my own website where, for a small subscription fee, my fans will be provided with an exclusive insight into my life, philosophy and forthcoming appearances. I’ll definitely Twitter every aspect of my daily existence, and I’ll probably enter into Twitter wars with fellow celebs - I’m looking forward to this. I will, of course, release a fitness DVD. I’m already practising my cover shot poses. For the ‘Before’ I’ll be make-up free, sad faced, slouching and pale as dishwater. In the ‘After’ shot, I’ll be transformed into a smiling, tanned, toned, glamour puss. However, you may have to wait a couple of years for the DVD as I haven’t yet employed a personal trainer (and I still have Haagen Dazs ice cream and toffee cheesecake in the freezer). I’m going to have a spot of Botox in the frown lines between my eyes, and just the teeniest bit of filler injected into my top lip. I’ve booked a spray tan and am considering waist length hair extensions. I may even have my belly button pierced...though this may also have to wait until after the personal trainer has ‘finished’ with me. However, I’m definitely going to have at least one tattoo. No anchors, skulls or loving tributes to my parents but something classy, mysterious, profound and uplifting. It has to be in Latin and fairly short as I’m not good with needles. I’m considering ‘Nosce te ipsum’ (Google it!) at the nape of my neck. Thus, when my hair extensions are swept atop my head

the world will be able to see what a cultured, educated person I am; for there, hidden under my luscious locks, is the ‘real’ me. Or perhaps I should have something in Greek? If I’ve time I may write the first instalment of my autobiography. I’m not quite sure about this yet as there are some aspects of my life that I’d prefer to remain private (the drunken rendition of The Teddy Bear’s Picnic – the shame of it). Nonetheless, I’m willing to provide a frank, honest and open account of my life that will inspire, uplift and leave my fans awestruck at my fortitude in the face of life’s adversities (as long as I have full and final editorial control). I’ll have an agent and a publicist to make bookings, deal with press enquiries and field intrusions into my private life. They will also advise on how best to maximise the opportunities that my celebrity status will present. Oh, and I’d just love to have a Personal Assistant. I’d be the nicest celebrity that they’d ever assisted. I’d make them cups of coffee, feed them cake, fuss over them and tell them to put their feet up if they looked tired... and it would be nice to have someone to chat to in the limo on airport runs. I haven’t quite decided exactly how I’m going to become a celebrity but it will probably involve reality TV. Britain’s Got Talent is likely my best bet; I just have to work out what my particular talent is. I think I may send off for the application forms soon. Don’t forget to vote for me – my celebrity depends on you! by A. O’Brien

St Swithun’s Day “St. Swithun’s day, if thou dost rain, For forty days it will remain; St. Swithun’s day, if thou be fair, For forty days ‘twill rain na mair.” St Swithun’s Day falls on 15th July and this poem, or the gist of it, has been well known since Elizabethan times. St Swithun, sometimes spelled Swithin, was born around 800AD, and became a monk, then Prior of the Winchester monastery before being made Bishop of Winchester in 852AD. He is now also the Patron Saint of the city. Known for his kindness and piety he was much loved by his flock and whenever he gave an official banquet, he would invite the poor, rather than the rich. He accomplished a number of good works, with records of that era revealing he built many new churches and repaired and restored old ones. He was also a tutor to King Aethelwulf of Wessex and his son Alfred, who later became one of the most celebrated Kings of Britain, Alfred the Great, so Swithun was obviously a very well respected and learned man. Swithun also built a bridge on the east side of Winchester where one of his miracles is said to have taken place. Apparently he restored a basket of eggs belonging to an old woman which had been broken by the workmen. Before his death, Swithun requested that he be buried in a humble grave outside the old cathedral, under the “rain of heaven”, where his grave would also be walked upon. So when he died on 2nd July 862 he was buried under the church pathway according to his wishes, much to the disgust of the clergy, who thought the Bishop should have an exalted tomb within the confines of the Cathedral. In 971AD, Swithun was canonised and on 15th July of that year the monks of Winchester decided to move

Icon of St Swithun in Winchester Cathedral his remains to a magnificent shrine inside the cathedral. Legend has it that on this day there was an enormous rainstorm, breaking a long period of dry weather and this heavy rain continued for a further forty days. Naturally, the monks took this as a sign of ‘divine displeasure’ and left the body where it was for the time being. However the myth detailed in the poem has no basis in reality. According to the records kept by the Meteorological Office since 1861, this prediction has been debunked every single year. There have been just four years where the prediction came close to fruition. In 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1995 St Swithun’s Day was dry and fine in southern England, as were the following 38 days. We’ve suffered enough with rainy weather already in 2012 so let’s hope this year the poem will come true for the good weather rather than the bad.

July

Americans – aren’t they a mad bunch, though? They come across like hysterical babies, screaming uncontrollably if they don’t get exactly what they want exactly when they want it, and threatening all kinds of horrible vengeance on anyone who might deny or even delay their instant gratification. Unfortunately, though, you can’t just ignore them as you might a real baby, because they’re big, powerful, and extremely heavily armed. Of course, they can’t really be the way they’re portrayed in our media, because if they were they’d all have killed each other by now. And anyway, I’ve met quite a few Americans and some of them are almost civilised. But that would be far too boring to show on TV or in newspapers. So, hysterical babies it is, then.

18

c a l l D i s c o v e r M a g a z i n e s o n 014 8 9 6 6 0 02 2

One thing babies can do is eat. And like babies, Americans are world-class eaters. They eat 28% of the food the world produces even though they only make up 5% of the world’s population. So let’s help them celebrate Independence Day on 4th July by eating American. July is pretty hot in the USA so Independence Day tends to be an outdoor event. The USA is challenged for the title of World’s Top Barbecue Nation only by South Africa and Australia, with which it shares reliable summer weather, high per capita income, and a gargantuan appetite for protein. So, this 4th July take the wire brush to the barbecue, fire up the charcoal (or gas), and throw on a steak. Or sausages. Or ribs. Or burgers. Or a piece of chicken which you can microwave first if you’re nervous. But before you cook it, make it truly American by slathering it with the following simple barbecue sauce. Fry finely chopped onions on a medium heat until golden brown. Add minced garlic and chopped and seeded chillis (optional) and fry for another minute. Add tomato puree, Worcester sauce, vinegar, salt and pepper, and either some jam or jelly (redcurrant or apricot) or, if you’re not using chillis, some sweet chilli sauce. Fry on a medium heat for another 10 minutes and you’ll end up with a sauce that’s full of complex flavours – sweet, sour, hot and deep. Use some of the sauce as a marinade and some for pouring over, but keep them separate to avoid cross-contamination. The crowning glory of your American barbecue is gumbo. The heart of gumbo is a roux made deep and dark by long cooking, so in a heavy-bottomed saucepan heat some oil, then add an equal quantity of sifted flour (you don’t want lumps) and stir for 10-15 minutes or until it darkens. Add chopped onion, green pepper, celery, minced garlic and thick slices of smoked sausage. Cook for 5 minutes, season, and add file powder (dried sassafras leaves) if you can find it, dried sage if you can’t. Add bay leaves and a litre of chicken stock, bring to the boil, then turn it down and simmer for approximately 30 minutes. Add a skinned, boned, and shredded roast chicken (cooked the day before) and king prawns (optional) and simmer slowly for another hour, topping up with stock if necessary (a gumbo is a soup, not a stew, so it needs to be liquid). Serve with brown rice. And to drink? Californian wine, of course, but also a genuine imported American beer. Not Budweiser or Coors because they are now brewed in Britain: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is, I think, the most widely available import – and it’s delicious! by Ted Bruning

DISCOVER SHORT STORY

Short Story Bernard's Unlikely Catch Bernard has been fishing on the canal bank since before breakfast. The grey cloud and drizzle have slowly burnt off, and the sun is now peeping shyly from behind fluffy clouds. Early on, the occasional dog walker strolled past and nodded to him. But if anyone lingered too long, or looked as though they wanted to chat, he would pull his cap down and hunch over his fishing pole. Bernard prefers the peace and quiet. He casts another handful of wriggling maggots into the dull water, but the perch aren’t nibbling today and his keep-net has been empty all morning. In the distance he hears the rattle of a bicycle. He glances along the towpath and sees a young woman peddling towards him. She’s riding an old fashioned butcher’s bike with a basket on the front. In it, a flowery shopping bag bounces up and down, as she awkwardly veers along the bumpy path. “Yes it’s a lovely bike, Marjorie, reconditioned,” she declares loudly. Bernard frowns. There appears to be no sign of Marjorie. He then notices the sunlight glinting off a silver object in her ear. “Daft thing’s talking on the phone and not looking where she’s going,” Bernard thinks.

Just as she’s about to pass him, a mallard takes flight, quacking in a flurry of alarm. It skims the top of her head and disappears over the hedgerow. The woman cries out and swerves, the front wheel of her bike leaving the narrow path with a jolt and veering towards the canal. With complaining brakes she comes to an abrupt stop. Bernard thinks she’s had a lucky escape, but then in dreadful slow motion, the woman and her bike begin to topple sideways. She puts her foot down to stop herself but beneath it is only water. As she falls the woman lets out a long squeal, then both woman and bike slap straight into the canal. Bernard wipes the drops of cold water from his face and stares dumbstruck at the water. A couple of bubbles break the surface and then the woman bursts up, gasping and flapping her arms about wildly. “You can stand up,” Bernard says gruffly. “It’s not deep.” She struggles to her feet, apparently unhurt, but with grimy rivers flowing down her hair and face. She tries to steady herself and makes a grab for the fishing pole. Bernard carefully moves it out of her reach, as after all these things cost money. Then, feeling

more charitable he rises to his feet, and reaches out, offering her his hand. Unsteadily she slips on the slimy canal bottom, flails, then manages to take the outstretched hand. Bernard drags her and the heavy bike out, both scummy with mud and bedraggled in duck weed. The woman sits down squelching on the grass next to Bernard, then spits in a most unladylike fashion into the water. “Well, that was a surprise.” She gasps. She begins to wring the water out of her hair, then freezes as though stung. “My mobile!” She drags her sodden bag out of the bicycle basket, water pouring from it like a sieve. Bernard doesn’t fancy the mobile’s chances, but says nothing. She opens the bag, thrusts her hand inside and then without warning she screams and throws the bag into the air. Bernard is bewildered. He stares at the woman as she points at the bag, opening and closing her mouth. Gingerly, he picks the bag up and looks inside. There, thrashing and twisting, is a beautiful perch. “Well, that’s one way to catch ‘em.” He chuckles. by Jackie Brewster

DISCOVER HERITAGE

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE Hurst Castle There is possibly no better time of year to bring to your attention the ancient fort of Hurst Castle than during July and August. The short open ferry ride from Keyhaven to the entrance of the castle is a delight for any age, particularly if you are able to do it on a warm summer’s day. Hurst Castle is one of Henry VIII's Device Forts, built at the end of a long shingle barrier beach at the west end of the Solent to guard the approaches to Portsmouth. Hurst Castle was sited at the narrow entrance to the Solent where the ebb and flow of the tides creates strong currents, putting wouldbe invaders at its mercy. Also known as a Henrician Castle, Hurst was built as part of Henry's chain of coastal defences to protect England during the turbulent times of his reign. In was completed in 1544. Charles I was imprisoned here in 1648 before being taken to London to his trial and execution. During the Napoleonic wars the castle was modernised and in 1870 the enormous armoured wings were constructed. During World War II, Hurst was manned with coastal gun batteries and searchlights. At over a third of a mile long and covering seven acres, Hurst Castle is the

largest coastal fort in the world. The end of the spit is only three-quarters of a mile from the Isle of Wight and the views from the top of the centre keep are spectacular. There are many exhibits and exhibitions as well as old cannons in the grassy centre which children are free to climb on. Friendly dogs on leads are welcome. Visiting there. www.hurstcastle.co.uk Daily from April – September, 10.30 am to 5.30 pm. October Daily – 10.30 am to 4.00 pm Nov to March – weekends only 10.30 am to 4.00 pm. Entry – Adult £4.20 : Child £2.50 : Senior £3.70 (season tickets available) There is a small café in the castle grounds for refreshments or take a picnic to have in the grounds or on the beach outside. To really enhance your visit there is an excellent audio guide which you can download onto a portable music player (e.g. an ipod). It costs just £2 with the proceeds going to the uptake of the fort. hurstcastle.bandcamp.com Ferries: Returns - Adults £5.50; Child £3.00 Singles - Adult £3.50; Child £2.00 First ferry 10am from Keyhaven. Last boat 5:30pm from Hurst. It runs approximately every 20 minutes but more frequently at busy times. The ferry can be taken both ways or park at either Keyhaven or Milfordon-Sea and walk along the shingle beach to or from your starting point (around 2.5 miles). Images with thanks to Lewis Clarke

Business Profile:

Bowyer's of Abbotts Ann Richard and Valerie Bowyer know their antiques. They have recently returned to this area after over 35 years running an antiques shop where they exported antiques all over the world. But Richard’s original skill – before buying and selling – was restoration, having been involved in that business since the age of 17. He knows his skill is both unusual and sought after. “I have a highly equipped workshop and that takes years to build up. I have clients ask for furniture restoration, repairs, polishing and waxing and that takes a range of tools as well as a lot of experience”. But he tells us it’s not just antiques he’s asked to do. “I receive requests to work on more modern pieces such as Ercol as well as older furniture”. Offering a collection and delivery service, Richard and Valerie expect to travel to their clients so that they can advise on the best treatment for those important heirlooms.

DISCOVER HOME

Working from home Office Politics If there’s one thing I thought I’d never miss, it’s office politics. All that bitching and bellyaching and backbiting. I was a victim of it myself, which is why I’m now working from home. The truth is, I was never any good at it. I didn’t understand how it worked, nor why anybody should choose to indulge in it. As far as I was concerned, you did your work, you went home, you got paid; and everybody else did pretty much the same. I was always too honest, or (if truth be told) too slow in the wits to realise that life wasn’t like that. Take character assassination. I know how it’s done now. You have to pick the right moments – in casual conversation (preferably out of the office rather than in the middle of a meeting) to sow the seeds of doubt about a colleague’s performance. You have to dress it up right: damning with faint praise is far more effective than outright condemnation. You have to build up to it, to insinuate yourself with the right people, to create the image of the positive, helpful, sympathetic workmate rather than the envious, hate-filled sac of venom you actually are. I was always too polite, though. I believed that if you

34

can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. Then there’s empire-building. Personally, being bone idle, I couldn’t believe that anybody would actually want more responsibility. Come five, my jacket was off the back of the chair and I was down the pub. If anybody was fool enough to want to take over some of my remit, more fool them. Then one day I woke up to find I didn’t have any remit left. So here I am, working from home. Well, perhaps I wasn’t as stupid as all that. I vaguely perceived that there were people who wanted to increase their influence at the expense of mine, and on the rare occasions when I managed to pull one over on them I was mightily pleased with myself. But I was no Iago. I wasn’t subtle enough, or persistent enough. I couldn’t be bothered to worm my way into the inner circle. By the time I walked out of the office door for the last time and entered the wonderful world of working from home I was heartily glad to be free of office politics and never dreamt I’d miss it. But after all, it’s human contact of a sort, even if they’re humans you really want to drop breeze-

c a l l D i s c o v e r M a g a z i n e s o n 014 8 9 6 6 0 02 2

blocks on from the top of a very tall building. It keeps you sharp. And besides, I think I’d be much better at it now. I could be good at being the boss’s blue-eyed boy if I put my mind to it. So I’m going to practise, although as a one-man band it might not be easy. I’m going to network surreptitiously with myself so I can blacken my reputation behind my back. I’m going to use my good standing with myself to gain ownership of my department’s operations. I’m going to claim the credit for all my successes while shifting the blame onto myself for all my shortcomings. I’m going to withhold vital information from myself and finally, albeit reluctantly, I’m going to have to let myself go. Then I’m going to have to replace myself with someone who’s more of a team player, someone who shares the company’s focus, someone who’s more directed towards common goals. Myself. by Ted Bruning

It can be a place to share this discomfort and feel less isolated with difficult feelings, or a place to understand possible causes, and with that understanding make choices to change patterns and make different decisions. Mint Kitchens

and Carpentry

Spending money on your kitchen is one of the best investments you can make. If you are going to stay in your home then you’ll have the pleasure of living and eating in this key family room; if you are planning to move, a beautiful kitchen not only adds value to your property but will also make it easier to sell. However, it’s not pocket money to have a refit or even a light makeover, so it’s important that you choose the right person for the job. Bishop’s Waltham businessman Rob Harding, owner of Mint Kitchens and fully qualified carpenter and joiner, has 19 years of achieving excellent results every time. A kitchen renovation might just mean a change of worksurfaces and a new sink. Or it might be ‘the works’ with units, tiling, flooring and

38

c a l l D i s c o v e r M a g a z i n e s o n 014 8 9 6 6 0 02 2

appliances all being replaced. Some clients have seen a kitchen in a major store that they like, but otherwise Rob can supply leading brand named kitchens at discounted rates. Through use of a clever software program, Rob will produce 3D graphic images showing the proposed design from different angles. This is a real help to both him and his clients as amendments are of course much easier to implement before you start than after. By building his own team of tried and tested independent trades, Rob is confident that everyone in his team is able to deliver quality work, on time and within budget. But it isn’t always complete kitchens. Rob said “I like the big projects of course, but fitting flooring, laying decking and other small carpentry works add variety to my job, so I’m just as happy when asked to do that too”. Whatever your requirement for work in the home, get some advice from an expert: call Rob at Mint Kitchens.
