Editor’s Letter

ALWAYS LOOK OF THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE I don’t believe everything I read in the newspapers, unless it suits me of course. My favourites are a glass of red wine a day protects the heart, beer is good for the brain, and The Daily Telegraph listed 10 reasons why chocolate is good for you. So when I read an article this morning reporting that optimistic women are less vulnerable to deadly diseases I decided that this would be my new year’s resolution; more positivity, more “glass full” and fewer complaints. However, later the same day I read on the BBC news app that England’s chief medical officer has called on baby boomers, those aged 50 to 70 to keep working to stay healthy. So now working is good for you, too! And did you know that owning a dog

(didn’t say walking a dog…) can add 10 years to your life? As I drink wine, beer, eat chocolate, plan to work till I’m at least 65 (because I enjoy it) and I have a dog I think I’m pretty “optimistic” about my longevity! This issue is a “New Year” special; if your resolution is to “make it happen” then don’t hesitate to call any of our advertisers and get the ball rolling!

Happy New Year!

REALISTIC RESOLUTIONS FOR A HAPPIER, HEALTHIER NEW YEAR New Year resolutions sound like a great idea: a fresh year and a fresh start. So why do they often fail? Setting Yourself Up for Failure At New Year, festive goodwill and New Year enthusiasm can entice us into making a multitude of overly ambitious resolutions, setting ourselves up to fail and often, give up completely on our goals. So let’s turn three popular, doomed-tofailure aspirations into realistic resolutions. MORE EXERCISE Your Resolution: I’ll go to Pilates, do my dance DVD and walk two miles every week! You didn’t manage any of these things every week last year - ask yourself why. Identify activities you enjoy and can most easily fit in. A Better Resolution: I’ll do at least an hour’s exercise every week. Weather too bad for walking? Missed Pilates? Resolve to do your exercise DVD instead. Anything else is a bonus. Better to do some exercise consistently than none. 6

LESS ALCOHOL Your Resolution: “I won’t drink on weekdays/at home/EVER AGAIN!” Recent research shows that even alcohol intake under the recommended limits of 2-3 units daily and 14 units per week increases your risk of many serious conditions, including dementia and some cancers, so reducing your intake is great – but tough if you’re a regular drinker. A Better Resolution: Think about when and where you drink alcohol, and reduce your intake gradually. Try: Matching every alcoholic drink with a soft drink, or buying a large soft drink later in the evening to last until home time. Finding other ways to relax if you always have a drink on returning from work (or make it a Friday-only treat). Feeling you ‘need’ a drink is a warning sign; consider if you need to make changes in your work life. è

On alternate nights, swap that wine with dinner or beer with friends for low-alcohol or non-alcoholic versions. NO SMOKING Your Resolution: “I smoke 30 a day, but I’m quitting for good at New Year!” It’s probably quicker to list conditions not aggravated or caused by smoking than to list those that are, and accepting you’re addicted to nicotine can be hard. But that twitchiness you feel – the need for a cigarette to ‘calm your nerves’ - is nicotine withdrawal, which can occur very quickly. This can make smoking hard to kick, particularly for moderate or heavy smokers. While a few successfully go ‘cold turkey’, gradually reducing your nicotine intake is the most reliable and angstfree method. A Better Resolution: Try the options below and keep going until you find a strategy that works.

You can also buy nicotine replacement products; experiment and see what works best for you. If you don’t already, make yourself smoke outside; it takes more effort. Toxins from your cigarette linger in the air (second-hand smoke) and settle on surfaces, where they’re re-released (third-hand smoke), so you’ll be improving the health of housemates and visitors too. Smoke to a timed schedule and gradually increase the time between cigarettes. Even if you smoke 25 a day and only drop one daily cigarette per fortnight, you’ll still be a non-smoker in under a year. Keep nicotine but eliminate cigarette toxins like cyanide and arsenic by swapping to e-cigarettes or vaporisers. ‘Resolution’ has an array of scientific and historical meanings, including ‘reduction to a simpler form’. So keep your resolutions simple – and realistic!

Visit your GP. They can prescribe some nicotine replacement products and refer you to counselling.

Mark Franklin talks to

THE SHIRES

The Shires are Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes. The Breeze’s Mark Franklin caught up with them to talk country music, influences and the surprising way they got together in the first place.

I’ve got to start off by congratulating you on two number one country albums – ‘My Universe’ being your most recent CD. Ben: Apparently this was the fastest selling country album of all time. It’s kind of a bit weird saying that because four years ago we hadn’t really met each other and here we are now with two albums under our belt – and doing this tour and seeing so many people singing along to every single song is just incredible. We’re having a great time.

When someone says to you, you’ve got the fastest selling country album of all time, how do you feel?

Crissie: It’s pretty amazing. It’s also crazy to think that we can use the word ‘country’ nowadays as it was kind of a dirty word for a long time. People if you mentioned it would be “oh, stetsons, rhinestones and cowboys” and it’s just not that any more. It’s so much more about what’s going on today. And in terms of heritage country artists, who do you look back on and think… genius. Crissie: Dolly (Parton). Dolly performing Glastonbury a few years ago was a really big turning point I think.

Because you used to sing her songs in pubs?

Crissie: I did! I was always singing her, Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes. They were the kind of leading ladies for me in country music. So in terms of the makeup of The Shires, it’s because you’re from two shires – Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, right? 10

Ben: Now just Bedfordshire because I moved! When we got together we said that we want to retain our Britishness and that’s where the name came from. And when we go out to the States, they love the fact that we’ve from the UK and that we are really proud of that. We wrote a song called ‘Made In England’ which just celebrates all the things we love about being British. It didn’t sound very good singing “made in Britain” so we changed it to ‘England’. We get a lot of stick for it in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland when we sing it! Both of you guys have had experience with the X Factor. Are you really glad that nothing really happened there because of where you are right now.

Crissie: Yeah it’s funny because if we didn’t go on that show, neither one of us would have met each other. It’s an entertainment show, it’s brilliant to watch, but it is hard work. We’re very grateful that we found each other and we get to do everything we want to do. So you’re two albums down now. Is it too early to be thinking about a third album?

Ben: No – you have to! Already started writing for it! Fans just want it straight away! <laughs>

NEW £4.8 MILLION HOSPITAL WARD Southampton Hospital Charity and The Murray Parish Trust are raising £2 million to fund the creation of a state of the art specialist Children’s Emergency and Trauma Department at University Hospital Southampton in the Summer 2018. The fundraising of £2 million will coincide with £2 million worth of match funding granted to the Hospital Trust from the Government as well as £800,000 allocated by the hospital, allowing us to make this critical ambition a reality. The overall £4.8 million cost of the development will create an innovative space for children to receive the very best care for emergency and trauma with all services housed in one place. This will not only enable a more streamlined, efficient and less anxiety-inducing experience for the child, but the larger modern build will ensure more children are seen at an even higher standard of care.

The much-needed department (which will treat children with medically unplanned instances across 9 areas) will create: • A large, dedicated children’s waiting room, reception and triage. • A bespoke children’s emergency X-ray, including a C-arm portable X-ray machine to allow manipulation of fractures. • A children’s procedural sedation room, eliminating the need for those needing sedation to be treated in the adult resuscitation room. • An acute assessment unit with 11 modern glass fronted bays with two isolation bays and a mental health safe room. • An observed treatment area with substantially more space located alongside the staff base. • A short stay unit with bays twice the size located just a corridor away from the acute assessment unit. In order for this to happen they need your support! To find out more or to make a donation, please contact the charity office: 023 8120 8881 or charity@uhs.nhs.uk

INTEREST RATES ARE LOW, SO WHAT ARE YOUR BEST OPTIONS FOR SAVING? With interest rates set to remain low for a while, it is worth considering what you could do with the spare cash you might now have. It is always a good idea to pay off your debts first, but there is also some benefit to starting a small nest-egg. From April 2016 everyone has a Personal Savings Allowance, which means that many people won’t need to pay tax on their savings (subject to a maximum limit). This broadening of your options means you could switch your current account to benefit from the credit interest offered by a different bank, or perhaps opt for a fixed-term ISA that removes the temptation to spend. 12

With each bank applying their own rules for eligibility, here are a few of the different accounts available at the time of writing. Bank current accounts It is not something that we are used to, but currently some banks are offering high credit interest rates on their current accounts. Most of these deals only last for a year, however, and are used to attract new customers, but many also offer cash back or a monetary incentive. Nationwide offers 5% AER fixed on their FlexDirect account for balances up to £2,500. This rate lasts for one year only and then drops to 1%, so you will need to be prepared to swap again if you want to get a higher rate after this. In order to be eligible for the account you have to pay in at least £1,000 per month. è

Regular savings accounts As the name suggests, these accounts require a regular payment in order to benefit from the higher interest rates. Again, some high interest rates are only available for a year as the banks use them as ‘loss leaders,’ assuming their new customer won’t be inclined to move once the rate falls.

that you have taken out in a tax year without it becoming part of the ISA limit.

First Direct offers 5% AER for one year, to customers holding a First Direct 1st Account. You are allowed to save between £25 and £300 per month, but if you miss one deposit your savings account will close and the balance will be placed into a low-interest account.

Atom Bank offers 1.4% AER for a one-year term, but you must open the account with their Android or iOS app, which won’t appeal to everybody. You can deposit between £50 and £100,000, and the interest is applied either monthly or annually.

Cash ISA Once the obvious choice to maximise your savings, a cash ISA can be a good place to start your nestegg if you don’t want to switch bank accounts or save a regular amount each month. The Coventry Building Society Easy Access ISA offers a rate of 1.1% AER. There is no limit on the number of withdrawals, and you can replace money

Fixed-rate accounts If you want to guarantee your rate of interest and are sure you won’t need the money for some time, a fixed-rate account could be a good option.

Savings accounts offer a guaranteed return on your money, which can grow surprisingly quickly, especially if the interest is applied monthly. Having some cash to one side gives you a degree of control to deal with unexpected life events such as redundancy, or simply the reassurance that you have a ‘cushion’ to fall back on. By Ann Haldon

IS YOUR PET OVERWEIGHT? Feeling the burden of overindulgence over the festive Season? It’s not just us humans that can make a fresh start in 2017 with weight loss and health goals. If you think your pet may be overweight your vet can help you manage your pet’s weight and help you get them on track to a healthier lifestyle… Common signs that your pet is overweight can include: • Ribs cannot be easily felt when running a hand along your pet’s side • Loss of an obvious waist line • Collar needs loosening • Bulging rump Feeding incorrect amounts of food and offering too many treats is the most common cause, but a weight problem can be successfully managed through diet and lifestyle changes. Combining a change of diet with increased exercise is the most effective way of achieving a healthy weight.

16

Heathside Vets recommend a prescription diet specially formulated for weight loss. These foods provide complete, balanced nutrition to keep your pet satisfied and healthy while losing weight. Van Cleef & Arpels So First

BEAUTY RESOLUTIONS

A new year is the perfect time to make a few changes to your beauty routine… It seems you can barely pick up a magazine without reading about another new skincare ‘miracle worker’, from skin softeners and beauty essences, to micellar water. Most of these are ‘nice to haves’ rather than essentials. If you are looking to up your skin care regime though, I’d recommend adding a serum. They’re more concentrated than a moisturiser, and designed to target specific concerns, from fine lines to blemishes. French brand Ekia’s Sérum Fermeté – Highly Active Firming Serum, is designed to tighten and lift skin. The ‘magic ingredient’, a tree extract called dragon’s blood sap, is said to help firm skin, smooth fine lines, increase moisture and aid skin renewal. My skin certainly felt tighter and more hydrated after using the serum. £48.99 from www.hollandandbarrett.com. 18

It’s easy to get stuck in a perfume rut. Rather than play it safe with your favourite scent, why not head to a local perfume shop and try a few new ones? Ideally, spritz a perfume on a card first. If you like the scent immediately, and still do after half an hour, then try it directly on your skin. Fragrance is designed to change over time, so don’t just spray, sniff and buy. Give it time to show you what it’s made of. Van Cleef & Arpels So First (from £32) is a nice one to try. Light, fresh and feminine, it’s bursting with floral notes, such as freesia and frangipani, with a warm base of vanilla and sandalwood. Many of us are guilty of splashing out on top of the range hair straighteners and styling products, then throwing whatever shampoo and conditioner is on offer in our basket. My top hair care recommendation is to go for a gentler, decent shampoo and conditioner. Personally, I avoid any that contain sodium lauryl sulphate, as I find it leaves my hair dry and brittle. è

Makeup bags and brushes can be a bit of a breeding ground for bacteria, and that can lead to spots and skin irritation. So if you haven’t given them a wash for a while, now’s the time. Clean brushes with a gentle hand wash or baby shampoo, pat them dry and then leave to air dry. Alternatively, if they’re looking a bit worse for wear, treat yourself to some new ones. The Nanshy range is a good choice. They’re made with premium synthetic fibres (so cruelty-free), assembled by hand and rigorously tested. They’re also lovely and soft and great for blending. Nanshy brushes start from £5.95 at www.myshowcase.com.

JASÖN do some great haircare products, priced from around £6.50 for a half-litre bottle that will last for ages. If you’re looking to treat yourself however, I can recommend Saach Organics Hair Strengthening Shampoo and Nourishment Conditioner. They’re packed with nourishing natural ingredients, such as almond oil, coconut milk and hibiscus, and leave my highlighted hair feeling soft and healthy. Prices start from £9.95 at www.saachorganics.com.

Parenting

FUSSY EATERS Ah, fussy eaters. Don’t you just love them? And don’t you just love those parents who gloatingly tell you that their child eats whatever they’re given, or goes to bed hungry? (Obviously these people have never been woken up at 3am by wails of, “I’m so hungry. Please can I have some porridge?”) Remember the days when your kids would eat most things, as long as it was blended with carrot? Or when you smiled smugly because your nine month old would happily chew on broccoli? It’s like they hit two and then develop taste buds that despise anything other than pasta, bread and sweets. Forget five a day, sometimes you wonder whether your child has eaten so much as a grapesized portion of fruit and veg all week. If you’re at your wits end trying to get them to eat some vegetables, these tips might just help. We know it’s winter, but there are few kids who’ll refuse ice-cream or lollies, even if it’s snowing outside. Try blending two small frozen bananas with a couple of handfuls of frozen raspberries or mixed fruit, and about a third of a cup of yoghurt. It makes a great ice-cream and uses up those bananas the kids have been turning their noses up at. Or, even simpler, buy a ready-made smoothie, pour it into lolly moulds and freeze. While too much fruit juice isn’t great for a child’s teeth, one glass is fine. Ideally, give it to them with a meal. Keep an eye out for mixed juices and smoothies too. (Some even have added multivitamins.) 20

Contrary to popular belief, not all kids like tomato-based sauces. Most do however. Cooked tomatoes are even healthier than raw, so try whizzing up a batch of sauce with a few hidden veggies. Cook a couple of cans worth of chopped tomatoes, along with some salad peppers, carrots, leek and any other vegetables you have languishing in the fridge. You can add a tiny bit of sugar if you want. Blend until smooth if your kids are particularly fussy, then use it as a pasta sauce, or add it to mince to make bolognaise, or cottage pie. Freeze what you don’t use – it’ll keep for months. You can also disguise veggies in other ways. Cauliflower mixes well with potato for example. Or try finely slicing a sweet potato, tossing it in olive oil and roasting it to make ‘intergalactic orange crisps’. (It’s all in the name.) Kids often prefer raw vegetables to cooked. You could offer them raw carrot, cucumber and salad pepper crudities as a side dish or snack. Some kids will surprise you by loving quite strong flavours. (Mine go mad for olives for example.) And strong flavours can be great for masking the taste of vegetables. So try pesto, garlic or mild curry. Children also like having some control. You could give them a list of five vegetables some days, and ask them to choose two for dinner. Or start a è

reward chart where they get a sticker for each type of vegetable they eat that week. And try setting out various raw veg with tortilla wraps and letting them make fajitas. Or doing the same with pizza bases. When all else fails, my fussy five year old will eat most things if I pretend it’s a fish that doesn’t want to be eaten, and he’s a shark. GROUPS WELCOME AT WARSASH ENVIRONMENTAL AREA More local groups have an opportunity to use the environmental area at Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy in Hampshire. The area is already frequently visited by local pre-schools and Scout groups. Headteacher Sara Willoughby, who opened it as the youngest teacher on the staff in 1990 says: “We would like to invite groups to come and use the area, which includes an environmental classroom that has some resources for ponddipping and identification charts.” A new addition to the sizeable area includes a storyteller’s chair for children to share stories and develop their confidence as they talk in front of the class. Sara adds: “I am always overwhelmed by the people who give up their Sunday morning to help with our Dig Days. They have made an amazing difference. We still have some areas that need to be developed with some hard-landscaping; this will be a big project and we are seeking funding for this.”

Members of the local Co-op store have already raised over £800 towards the development of the school’s environmental area. Each member is issued with a membership card and when buying Co-op own-brand food they can select a local charity to support. Hook-with-Warsash is the only school in the area to have struck this arrangement with the UK wide retailer. It means that 1 per cent of every purchase can go to the school. Nick Crofts, President of the Co-op Member Council, commented: “Co-ops are here to support their members and the communities they live in, and the money raised will provide much needed funding for Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy, which contributes to improving local life.” The school has received quotes for up to £10,000 to update the environmental area. Mrs Willoughby is keen to hear from any local businesses wishing to further support this project. She can be reached on: admin@hookwithwarsash.co.uk or tel. 01489 572393.

Recipe

SQUASH AND SPINACH LASAGNE If you fancy a meat-free supper this week then try this delicious filling vegetarian lasagne. Serve with a crisp green salad and crusty bread. Serves 4 • Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes

1 butternut squash, peeled and flesh diced 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 tsp dried oregano 3 tbsp olive oil 200g baby spinach leaves 250g pack fresh egg lasagne sheets 250g ricotta cheese 300g cottage cheese 150g ready-grated mozzarella cheese 25g pine nuts Green salad, to serve

1. Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Place the diced butternut squash, onion, garlic and oregano in a large roasting tin and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and toss to mix. Roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the squash is very tender. Cool for 10 minutes. 2. Transfer everything from the roasting tin (including any pan juices) to a food processor and process until smooth, adding a little hot water if needed to give the mixture a spreadable consistency. 3. Steam the spinach for 1-2 minutes until just wilted. Place the lasagne sheets in a large shallow heatproof dish and cover with boiling water. Leave for 3-4 minutes to soften then lift out of the water and drain on kitchen paper. Mix together the ricotta and cottage cheeses in a bowl along with half the mozzarella cheese. 4. Spread a third of the squash mixture in the base of a square medium-sized ovenproof dish. Top with a layer of wilted spinach followed by a layer of the cheese mixture and a layer of lasagne sheets, cutting them to fit if necessary. 5. Repeat the layers two more times, finishing with lasagne sheets and a thin layer of the remaining cheese mixture. Scatter over the rest of the mozzarella cheese and the pine nuts, and drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the cheese topping is golden and bubbling.

MULLED PEARS This is a lovely winter pudding that tastes just as delicious served warm or cold. Choose firm but ripe small pears, and use a vegetable peeler to scoop out the core from the base of each one. Serves 4 • Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling time 1. Pour the wine into a large pan and add the sugar, lemon rind, cinnamon stick and cloves. Heat gently, stirring occasionally until the sugar has dissolved. 2. Meanwhile, peel the pears, leaving the stalks on. Gently lower the pears into the hot liquid. Cover and simmer for 35-40 minutes until the pears are tender. 3. Remove the pears with a slotted spoon and set aside in a heatproof serving dish. Blend the arrowroot to a paste with 1tbsp cold water and stir into the poaching liquid. Simmer gently for a further 5 minutes, stirring, until syrupy. Remove the lemon rind and cloves from the syrup. 4. Pour the hot syrup over the pears and leave for 30 minutes. Serve the pears and syrup, warm or cold, with a dollop of whipped double cream or crème fraiche. 32

450ml red wine 150g caster sugar 1 pared strip of lemon rind 1 cinnamon stick 2 whole cloves 8 small Conference pears 2tsp arrowroot Softly whipped double cream or crème fraiche, to serve

BON APPÉTIT!

By Cecile

As a French sommelier, Marcel Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time”, has haunted me ever since I moved to England 23 years ago. At the heart of the book is the theme of involuntary memory, in which an experience such as a smell or a taste unexpectedly unlocks a past recollection. Every time I pass in front of a bakery, my heart stops and calls to mind my childhood in France. The taste of buttered croissants at breakfast, the feel of those crumbs on my lips, the smell of the rich, hot cocoa I religiously drank after school, the inviting glance at a pain au chocolat waiting on my plate, or the noise that fresh, crunchy baguettes made at dinner time. I will never forget.

Fabrice and Tanya Berthonneau and their typically French restaurant and café bar, ‘La Parisienne’ on Bell Street in Romsey SO51 8GY. I’m always lost for words and a little tearful when I savour a soupe à l’oignon or a roasted breast of duck there. The ambiance and the flavours bring me back to another time. Thank you to Luc for recently opening up the finest of cheese, cold meats and wine delicatessens on Latimer Street in Romsey SO51 8DF, adeptly named ‘Luc, Purveyor of Fine Foods’. A “fine épicerie” where fresh produce and great wine bottles await patiently to be picked up and satisfy your palate.

This is why I now need to thank a few of my compatriots, dotted around Hampshire, for providing me with the very best food experiences around, for making me salivate and remember once again that life is good. Thank you to Gilles Coupeau, the most talented of bakers for his fresh breads and incredible gâteaux. His ‘Boulangerie de Victor Hugo’ on the High Street in Southampton SO14 2NS is an Aladdin’s cave, full of mouth-watering pâtisseries and glorious home-made food.

Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere 34

I hope that these much-loved addresses of mine, will provide you with the same joyful experiences that a morsel of cake did for Proust. But for me, smells are perhaps even more evocative than tastes because – as any wine-buff will tell you – our noses are much more discriminating than our tongues. By Cecile

HELP FIGHT HUNGER IN HAMPSHIRE According to the World Health Organisation there are over 8 million people in the UK who struggle every day to know where their next meal is coming from. Yet at the same time the food and drink industry waste tonnes of perfectly good food every year. FareShare Southern Central operated by Southampton’s anti-poverty charity SCRATCH works with the food and drink industry and captures good quality surplus food which would otherwise go to waste and redistributes it to charities and community groups working with vulnerable people. Two main issues of our time are tackled - hunger and food waste. The work is only possible thanks to an army of volunteers who help us sort, pick, pack and deliver around 10 tonnes of food each week to over 150 charities throughout Hampshire and Dorset. These

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Locks Heath

area and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be
