Editor’s Letter
you are lucky people I have to admit that I’m a bit of a Rightmove addict which seriously unnerves my husband when I’m alerted to a dream home newly on the market; especially when it’s in two of my favourite places, Wickham or Bishops Waltham. So, I was green with envy when I spent the afternoon with my ex-neighbour and close friend who has just moved into Wickham’s village centre. Despite the drizzle, the stallholders of A Taste of Wickham Festival were cheerful and the sight of so many friendly greetings between residents, shopkeepers and business owners confirmed to me that this is a true community and a very desirable place to live indeed. I bought a leg of goat (never tried it before) from Devese Farm, a bottle of local brew Old Dick (for my father called Richard!), homemade jams and a gorgeous patchwork quilt for only £25 from the Vintage shop in Warwick Lane – I could hardly make it back to the car! Old Dick Ale is named after Dick Olding who brewed this beer in Southwick
Brewhouse from 1906 to 1957, retiring at the ripe old age of 81. He died soon after, taking his recipes with him, but Suthwyk Ales who brew it now are sure that ‘Old Dick’ would approve of their recipe and appreciate this way of being remembered. Discover Magazines is about connecting our readers with what’s available to them in their community, especially the local businesses who we hope you support. We bring you a bit of light reading, What’s On listing, interesting articles, recipes, puzzles and importantly our advertisers that make Discover possible. If you want to promote details of a club, event or non-profit making organisation you’re involved in we’d be delighted to share it with our 12,200 readers. As soon as we saw that the musical was available for amateur groups, we jumped at the chance. It’s always been a favourite of mine and it’s perfect for Soberton Players and for our audience.”

lions serve up a fine result The Meon Valley Lions Club has presented the Rainbow Centre in Fareham with a £1,000 donation, following their involvement with a highly successful Family Fun Day. The Lions volunteered to deliver the barbeque catering at the centre’s annual Fun-Day event, and sold hundreds of sausages and burgers to raise this grand sum. The Rainbow Centre has been operating for 26 years in Fareham and relies heavily on donations to deliver its Conductive Education programmes for children and adults, from all over Hampshire. The special programmes encourage children and adults to improve mobility and movement in the face of disability caused by cerebral palsy, adult-stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease or similar. 14
Jessica, Amy (Assistant Conductor), Matilda, Lion Roy, Lion Lamar, Skyla, Lion Sheila, Bea (Conductor) and Frankie
Jess Greenwood, Event Fundraiser at the Rainbow Centre said, “Catering for large numbers at the annual fun day is always a challenge, but the Lions’ BBQ food was great quality. They were also very well organised and catered for the large number of visitors with ease.”

wheels
With the New Forest, quiet roads, South Downs National Park and the Isle of Wight on our doorstep the area is a haven for keen cyclists and ideal for family outings on two wheels instead of four. Discover takes a look at cycling in the Solent area.
The Benefits of Buying Local It’s possible to spend thousands of pounds on a road or mountain bike so getting it right is important. If you are unsure what to buy then speaking to a knowledgable retailer will be worth it. Even if you know what you want, discussing it with a person equally as passionate about bikes as you are makes the purchase an enjoyable experience. However fit you are or fast you go, being fitted for the right frame is invaluable. A bike fit takes a few hours using specialist equipment. A good fit will prevent lower back pain and improve your speed as you are more aerodynamic, also correct pedal positions means greater power. Online pricing is tough to ignore as is the convenience of home delivery but many stores will price match and deliver for free. And not forgetting that dealing with faulty goods or returns can be a challenge online. A Healthy Start Like opting for the stairs instead of the lift, why not cycle instead of jumping in the car? Riding a bike is fun, healthy and a low-impact form of exercise but be sure the frame is the right geometry to avoid lower back pain.
To encourage frequent use, store it somewhere easy to access; avoid struggling to get it out of a cluttered garage or crammed shed! If you’d like to cycle to work ask your company about Cyclescheme worth up to £1,000 of equipment. You pay a monthly ‘salary sacrifice’ to effectively ‘hire’ the bike and kit, over a 12 month period after which you can purchase the bike when the scheme ends, saving between 25% to 39%. Electric Bikes If you like the idea of cycling but dread the thought of struggling up those hills consider an electric bike with battery power when you need it. The options range from ones with a small motor to assist the rider’s pedal-power, to the more powerful e-bikes which are closer to moped-style functionality. All, however, retain the ability to be pedalled by the rider and are therefore not classed as electric motorcycles. They use rechargeable batteries and the lighter bikes can travel up to 20 mph.
Dare to jump at your nearest BMX track! BMX racing made its debut in the 2008 Beijing games. It is now the turn of BMX Freestyle Park now confirmed as a sport in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. BMX Racing involves sprint races across off-road single-lap race tracks whereas in BMX Freestyle Park the competitors are awarded points based on stunts performed throughout the course. Will we be cheering on a local Olympian in 2020? In 2013 Knightwood Leisure Centre, in Chandlers Ford opened its ÂŁ100,000 purpose built dirt track now home of the Knightwood BMX Club. The Club welcomes riders of all ages and abilities to its training sessions every Saturday from 10am to 1pm and gate practice sessions every Thursday evening 5.30pm to 7.30pm (April until October). JOY OVER BIRTH OF ENDANGERED FOAL Staff at Marwell Zoo are celebrating the birth of a critically endangered African wild ass – giving a huge boost to one of the rarest animals in the world. Nine year old Nadifa and foal are said to be happy and healthy. This is the ass’ second foal to be born at Marwell after she gave birth to a female foal in 2013. Firsttime dad Lars arrived from Safari de Peaugres in France in April last year. The birth of the foal is a huge boost to a species that has been on the critically endangered list since 1996, with estimates suggesting that there could be around 600 left in the wild today. Animal Collection Manager Ian Goodwin said: “We are one of only three collections in the UK holding
a breeding herd of African wild ass, which makes its arrival so important. We are all really proud to see this wonderful new addition doing so well.” The wild population of the African wild ass is based in the harsh and remote lands of Eritrea or Ethiopia. It is unknown whether there are any left in Somalia. Marwell has always been key in the conservation of this special breed and the first-ever British born African wild ass was born at Marwell in 1996.

Technology Gardening
TECH FOR THE NEW TERM
The best solutions for students and schoolwork It’s that time of year again: schools, colleges and universities are readying for a new term and parents are running around trying to get everything their children need. Increasingly that includes technology, whether that’s a basic laptop for younger children’s homework or an all-rounder for studying, social media and streaming video at home or in student accommodation. It’s worth thinking about streaming video if your children are staying away from home, because you can get almost all the TV you want for free, entirely legally, via the internet and most catch-up TV apps (BBC Iplayer does need a licence). There’s no need for a pricey Sky or Virgin contract, just a decent broadband service. If video is going to be a key thing, make sure whatever you buy has a good-sized screen or buy a Chromecast, which enables you to stream video from your computer to a TV. The best all-rounder is a Windows 10 laptop, and you’ll find lots of really good bargains from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Asus around the £400 mark. 1
There’s another option: tablets such as the iPad. Previously we’ve said they aren’t really ideal for serious work but that’s changed with the arrival of the iPad Pro, which is a genuine alternative to a powerful laptop. It’s pricey though (from £619) with another £159 for a keyboard cover or £99 for the Apple Pencil (£99). 26
In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have a phone, give Apple a miss unless you’re really fond of their products or don’t care about the cost: Lenovo’s P2 and 2 the Moto G5 are both brilliant Android smartphones and cost less than £150 SIM-free. And if they need an e-reader, Amazon’s all-conquering Kindle remains the one to get - but you don’t need to buy the top-end Kindle Voyage (£169): the basic Kindle is just £59.99 and does the job perfectly well.
It’s worth checking your insurance policies too, especially if your children will be moving out for college or university. Your home insurance might already cover your children’s gadgets when they’re away from home, but don’t assume that’s the case - and if they do, check the excesses, which might be higher than the cost of repairing or replacing a gadget. The same applies to any contents insurance you may take out for your children’s accommodation. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money.co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly. We’d particularly recommend insurance that covers you for accidental damage: if something can be dropped, smashed or accidentally covered in liquid, it probably will be. Main Image- iPad Pro 10.5” £619. 1. Google Chromecast £30-£69. 2. Lenovo P2, around £300.

SOLENT WRECK PROJECT ENSURED LEGACY WITH LOTTERY AWARD As the first dive season on the wreck site of HMS Invincible in the Solent draws to a close this year, it has been announced the project has received initial Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) support to create a three-year programme to bring the excitement of the operation from the seabed to a much wider audience. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, ‘Diving Deep - The HMS Invincible 1744’ Project is a partnership with The Maritime Archaeology Sea Trust (MAST), The National Museum of the Royal Navy and Bournemouth University to archaeologically excavate, record, conserve and display the remains of the shipwreck Invincible, wrecked in 1758 in the Solent. Considered by many to be one of the most significant warships ever built, Invincible was built by the French in 1744 and captured by the British on the 3 May 1747.
School Flute Choir Wins national competition Hampshire Flute Choir wowed the judges at the first ever ‘Flutewise’ national competition, beating off stiff competition from three other fi nalists to scoop the top prize of £300 in the school age category. The judging panel deemed the 13 strong Choir to be the best in the country, which included celebrated professional fl autists Gareth McLearnon and Ana Pucihar, as well as renowned composer/pianist Blaž Pucihar. Conducted by fl ute teacher Carrie Hensel, the Choir’s winning performances were: ‘Th e Dolphin’ by Blaž Pucihar, and ‘Walk Like Th is!’ by Ian Clarke. Hampshire Flute Choir rehearses every other Saturday 10.30am to 12.30pm term time at Henry Beaufort School, Winchester. The HMS Invincible 1744 team. By Mike Pitts
A major exhibition will be hosted by both Chatham and Portsmouth Historic Dockyards and once the National Museum’s Centre for Discovery is opened in 2020. Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director General of The National Museum of the Royal Navy said: “We have a handful of artefacts on show already from Invincible and cannot wait to preserve and display as many as 500 more.”

a computer’s dream Honda has fitted an automatic DCT gearbox to its Africa Twin endurance machine. James Baggott reports on life with the 998cc continent crosser. Honda’s Africa Twin has gained a cult following – and rightly so. It’s a do-it-all enduro bike that’s not only comfortable, but incredibly capable too. We’ve been riding the firm’s latest model with the revolutionary automatic DCT transmission for a few months now and soon discovered it’s a staple commuting tool. Now, if like me, you’re already a fan of endurostyle bikes, the seating position and handling characteristics will be very familiar. The relatively small screen does cause a bit of buffeting, but the sit-up-and-beg style riding position works brilliantly in town. I’ve ridden the 998cc parallel twin cylinder machine to London and back to the South Coast six times now and found that the seat does get a little uncomfortable after an hour or so. At 6’4’’ I am just a little too big for the Honda, my legs are slightly too folded on the pegs and the wind buffeting makes my back ache on long motorway journeys. 30
However, that said, when the stop-start traffic bites, the Africa Twin makes for a brilliant gap-finding tool. The light steering and automatic gearbox in ‘sport’ setting transforms it into a scooter-like commuter, darting for gaps. The test bike has the optional hard luggage fitted – both top box and panniers at a cost of £920. Sounds pricey, but they’re impressively capacious and able to swallow most of the bike kit you’ll need to get into town. They do make the Africa Twin rather wide though, so you have to be cautious when slipping through gaps in the traffic. On the road, the Honda handles neutrally. I have noticed some disconcerting feelings when leaning over hard, just enough to make you question the available grip for a nanosecond, however that could be down to the tyres. I’ve also noticed the standard forks on the front dip considerably under braking – if you’re used to BMW’s telelever setup on the GS, this bike’s main rival, it takes some getting used to. The engine develops 94bhp and 98Nm of torque è

which feels perfectly punchy enough. There are times under hard acceleration when a little more grunt could come in handy, but these are rare. The real talking point is the DCT automatic gearbox though. For those of you unfamiliar with the setup, the Africa Twin in this guise has no gear pedal and the lever for the clutch isn’t for the clutch at all – instead it operates a handbrake, and is positioned sensibly far enough away that you won’t end up pulling it unintentionally. That’s handy because you’ll certainly be grabbing for the clutch the first few times you slow down. However, once you’ve got used to the fact the bike does all the ‘hard work’, you’ll soon be enjoying the break your left arm and foot get. As a hardened biker I never thought it would be something I’d enjoy riding quite as much as I do. There are a few niggles though. I’ve found the fuel tank a little on the small side. At just 18.8 litres it’s not nearly enough for a bike capable of long distances, and frustratingly won’t get me the 160 mile round trip to London and back without refuelling. I’ve also found the centre stand a little precarious. It’s hard to get your motorcycle boot-
clad foot between the frame and stand to push it down sturdily enough. That might have something to do with my big feet and correspondingly large boots, but it’s still annoying. Those minor gripes aside, I’m finding the Africa Twin to be a brilliant companion. Its combination of solid build quality and capability in a variety of circumstances makes it the perfect bike to tackle our congested roads in pretty much all weathers. And if you’re doubting that automatic transmission – give it a try, you might just like it as much as me.

country parks among the best globally
Five local country parks are among the best in the world after being awarded Green Flags.
The international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that Lepe, Manor Farm, Queen Elizabeth, Royal Victoria and Staunton country parks boast the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained, and have excellent visitor facilities. Councillor Andrew Gibson said: ‘We’re delighted that our popular country parks have once again been recognised as world class open spaces for residents to enjoy. Green Flag Awards are hard earned and are only given to the best green spaces across the globe. Our staff, volunteers and partners are rightly proud of this excellent their achievement.”
Over the next four years, we will be improving a range of country park facilities in Hampshire. The work includes providing new and improved visitor centres, cafés, play equipment, trails and parking, as well as enhancing the unique habitats, heritage and breath-taking scenery found at the five country parks. 33
staying connected to loved ones Losing someone close to you is never easy – but even more so when it is your mum or dad who passes away. Your parents are hugely important figures in your life and the loss of such a source of love, wisdom, experience and support can knock you for six. For those struggling to deal with grief, it can help to have the physical focus of a place where they feel close to their loved one, and this is a phenomenon that the team at Portchester Memorial Gardens has seen repeatedly. Explains Claire from Wickham: “I miss my mum so much since she passed away three years ago, and it’s especially hard on her birthday and Mothers’ Day. It really helps to visit her plot, place flowers on her memorial and take a few moments in these
beautiful surroundings to feel that she’s still an important part of the family.” Memorials can be placed in a variety of themed areas which have been cultivated to offer yearround beauty within tranquil grounds – including the Garden of Peace with its restful ponds, and the Hill of Roses, flooded with summer scent and colour. The sympathetic team at the family-run Portchester Memorial Gardens are experienced in helping families lay their loved ones’ ashes to rest, so to discuss your requirements, call 01329 828250.
A Place of Peace, a Garden to Remember
Lay your loved one’s ashes to rest in your chosen plot in a beautiful, family-owned garden, complete with personalised memorial. Sympathetic staff will help you find the perfect final resting place in this award-winning, tranquil setting, from the reflective Garden of Peace or fragrant Hill of Roses to the sheltered Garden of the Sea or Summerhouse View vistas. “A massive thank you – you have made such a sad time easier to manage, knowing that my beloved is surrounded by such beauty and is taken good care of.” CH, Southsea

head to the western cape this winter South Africa has always been seen as a longhaul destination and consequently requires at least two weeks out of your annual holiday allowance, that is until recently. Now, more and more tour operators are offering it as a short break destination, and whilst 3 nights would be pushing it, you can see why it is possible to put together a stay of between 4 and 7 nights without feeling the need for another holiday upon your return. With the flying time of around 11 hours and the time difference never more than 1 hour from the UK, this means you shouldn’t find yourself suffering form jetlag. There more airlines now offering a premium economy cabin or extra leg room for a supplement, you can now travel in relative comfort and at an affordable price. The two South African cities that can be reached easily are Johannesburg and Cape Town, whilst the first is known more as a centre of business and gateway to the country, the latter is very much a centre of tourism in its own right. Cape Town is the heartbeat of the Western Cape, this young vibrant city is not shy to walk the line between tradition and innovation offering something for everyone from history and culture to the excitement of parasailing and abseiling down the side of Cape Town’s great Icon ‘Table Mountain’ this is a city that you will want to return to. Not to be missed is Robben Island, this island is best known as the place where Nelson
Mandela and scores of other political visitors were imprisoned, it can be a very humbling and inspiring day out. If you are looking to stretch your stay to a full week, you would be wise to hire a car for a few days and head out into the winelands of the Stellenbosch, Paarl and Frannschoek before moving onto the coast and Hermanus, home to possibly the best land based viewing point for a spot of whale watching on the entire planet, especially so from July to October. All in all, the Western Cape makes for a great winter destination and whether you are planning to visit for a few days or a few weeks, your first port of call for the best in planning and advice should always be Amity Travel Private Client. 12 Manor Court, Barnes Wallis Road Segensworth East, FAREHAM PO15 5TH

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company
policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Meon Valley
area and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Houseplants go home Most houseplants need to be just that, plants in houses, but come the summer it usually gives them a real boost to get the higher natural light levels, refreshing (relatively warm) rainfall and seriously fresh air. But now that September is here it is time to bring them indoors – colder nights will cause damage, especially to some of the more tender varieties. Before bringing them in, check your plants over. Use a sharp pair of scissors to remove dead, damaged or dying leaves, cutting back neatly into clean, healthy growth. Next inspect the stems, foliage and any flowers for pests and diseases - it always pays to bring houseplants in totally clean. Look out for white powdery mildew deposits, often accompanied by a bit of leaf yellowing, and check for greyish fuzzy fungal patches caused by the notorious Botrytis or grey mould. Also look for pests like scale insects - tiny brownish elliptical insects which feed beneath 40
leaves or on soft stems, often producing copious quantities of sticky, sugary honeydew - or aphids, which may be found clustered on the more tender, newer growth. These must be dealt with before the plants go indoors, as once inside the pests will flourish in the warmer, more protected conditions, and will soon multiply and may even spread. Most problems like these, if caught early, can be dealt with by using scissors or secateurs to snip off infected areas, or by some careful picking off by hand. If you find scale insects, aphids or fluffy patches of mealy bug, there is a brilliant environmentally-friendly biocontrol that is also safe for you and your pets. For more information, visit www.pippagreenwood.com/products/protectyour-crops.
Next, inspect the pots, including the surface of the compost and beneath the base and rim of the pot itself. If you can, and as long as the plant won’t be damaged in the process, gently ease it out of its pot and check the root ball - this is the perfect place for stowaways like vine weevils, slugs and snails.
Not the sort of house guests you or your plants would appreciate, I’m sure.
When the check over is complete, gently scrape away the uppermost surface of the compost and replace with the same quantity of fresh, similar compost, wipe down the sides of the pot and take your plants inside, taking care not to put them anywhere which is too hot, too dry or too draughty for their liking. Once your old favourites are safely re-installed in their old positions and are free from unwanted guests, you may like to treat yourself to a new houseplant or two. There are some wonderful (and good value) houseplants readily available in garden centres and supermarkets now - how about a marvellously elegant moth orchid (Phalaenopsis)? I treated myself to a couple this summer and I know that even with my sometimes erratic care they should keep on performing for years to come!marvellously elegant moth orchid (Phalaenopsis)? designing a dressing room The Modernist architect Le Corbusier (a man who knew a thing or two about designing buildings) advised readers of his collected essays: “Never undress in your bedroom. It is not a clean thing to do and makes the room horribly untidy.” Clearly, this was a man who was strongly in favour of separate dressing rooms. Move on almost 100 years or so and, while most of us don’t really feel that it’s unhygienic to take our clothes off in the bedroom, many of us do yearn for the luxury of a dressing room, a dedicated place in which to store clothes in good order, leaving the bedroom as a comfortable, tranquil place uncluttered by bulky wardrobes and chests of drawers. When space allows, this could be an immensely useful, functional space, as large and luxurious as you like, containing not just clothes storage but also room for a dressing table, seating and plenty of mirrors. When space is restricted, perhaps in an apartment or older property, you may find that it is more efficient to turn a small room, part of a large landing or one end of a bathroom or the master bedroom into a dressing area packed with carefully designed storage. How big should a dressing room be? The most effective way to work it out is simply to get out your tape and measure everything that you’re planning to put in the room, then draw up plans and elevations of where and how they’ll fit. Most people opt for a combination of hanging space and drawers. 44
Think of rails for full, half and three-quarter-length hanging, deep, shallow and compartmentalised drawers, and useful fittings such as tie holders, pull-out shelves, boxes, trouser hangers and laundry bins. The hard-to-reach top parts of the space are ideal for infrequently used items, and shoes can be kept in racks or on trees at the bottom. To turn your space from a walk-in wardrobe to a full-on dressing room, leave enough space for a dressing table with a good mirror and drawers for cosmetics, hair styling kit and so on. A full-length mirror is essential, and for drying hair you’ll need a plug socket nearby. There are three ways to fit out the space: find a carpenter or joiner to make you an utterly bespoke room; commission a fitted-furniture specialist and choose from one of their ranges; or use off-theshelf elements, readily available from DIY sheds or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. The latter option, though undeniably the cheapest, has the disadvantage of being less flexible and, because all the parts will be made to standard measurements, may not make the best use of your
space, particularly if it is awkwardly shaped.
It is important to get the lighting right in a dressing room. Wall fittings, dangling pendants and floor lamps may be in the way, so inset ceiling spotlights are often the best option. Ensure that you have enough to light the room brightly, particularly if your finishes are dark. And if you decide to screen off your clothes with doors, fit sensor-operated lights that switch on when you open the doors. While the organisation of storage is essentially utilitarian, there is always an element of aesthetics, too. Even plain, open-fronted storage comes in a choice of finishes, while bespoke versions could incorporate exotic woods, leather or wicker. In an ideal world, you would match the style of the dressing room to that of your bedroom, picking out colours, finishes and details such as drawer handles and light switches to blend seamlessly from one room to the other. The name central to heating
Whether your Aga or boiler is fuelled by oil , natural gas, LPG (bottled) or solid fuel. It is very important that you optimise the equipment to its full potential.
Harpers are a fourth generation heating company. As such, they understand the correct way to address any problems you may have. In 1993 Harpers produced a ‘Guide to Heating and Hot Water Installations’. This was later updated in 2009, to encompass different approaches to heating and hot water, with comparisons to, air source heat pump, and renewable heat incentives.
The guide was written, so that the homeowner could understand what they required from their heating and hot water system and the correct way it should be approached. Nobody wants a sales person in their home, who does a single sheet of paper ‘estimate’ for heating,
saying on it, “you are having 12 radiators, a combi boiler and a time clock for ‘x’ amount”, (what specification and to what standards). You need a comprehensive quotation.

breast cancer awareness Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women in the UK. Thankfully, it’s also one of the most treatable, with 87% of women now surviving for at least five years after diagnosis. The earlier you catch it, the more treatable it is. So put down this magazine and cop a feel! It’s best to check your breasts and armpits regularly for any changes. You’re not just looking for lumps – other symptoms include discharge, pain and a change in appearance, such as dimpled skin. Most changes turn out to be nothing, but do book yourself in for a check-up if you find anything, just to be sure.
50
And now on to the fun stuff… From mugs to mints, there are loads of charity products out for Breast Cancer Awareness Month this year. Do read the pack to see how much is being donated though, as in some cases it’s less than 5%. Neal’s Yard Remedies is donating £1 for every Organic Roll on Deodorant (£8) bought in October. Rich in skin-loving essential oils and natural ingredients, the deodorants are very refreshing, smell divine and protect from odour for up to 24 hours. Donations are going to The Haven, a national charity offering support to people affected by breast cancer. Elemis is a long-term supporter of breast cancer charities. This year the beauty brand has released a limited edition Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. The cream has won numerous awards and has been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and leave skin feeling firmer. It’s one of Elemis’s bestselling products – one Pro-Collagen Marine Cream is sold every nine seconds! The limited edition jar is being sold for £99. While the price seems steep, the normal 100ml jar is £140, so you’ll save £41, as well as helping to support Breast Cancer Care. Elemis has pledged to donate £25,000 from sales.
In the market for some new hair styling products? Heated styling company ghd has raised more than £10 million for breast cancer charities over the last 13 years. This year they’ve launched the ghd Pink Blush Collection. The range includes a limited edition Platinum Styler (£165), Air Hairdryer (£99) and Paddle Brush (£20), with £2 to £10 being donated to Breast Cancer Now from each sale. Estée Lauder has been supporting breast cancer charities for several years, raising more than $65 million globally. Several of the Estee Lauder companies are releasing limited edition products in support of breast cancer research this year, including Bobbi Brown. The Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzing Powder Set includes a flattering pink cheek powder and a mini face brush. The set costs £35, with 20% of the sale price going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Jo Malone London is donating £5 from the sale of every Red Roses 100ml Cologne (£88) sold throughout the month of October. Beloved by celebs such as Sophie Dahl, Red Roses is inspired by seven different roses and has notes of violet, citrus and honey. It’s a lovely fresh fragrance and really conjures up images of summer By Kate Duggan evenings in the garden. 51
