Getting Things Done
Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston
A few years ago I bought a book called Getting Things Done by David Allen. I read a bit of it, but the irony of not having finished it isn’t lost on me. Chapter 1 should have been “How to get to the end of this book”. But even though like most people I manage to do most that I need to, I find it hard to drive myself to finish every last outstanding task. That is, if it’s a little job – say, paying a bill – I’ll do it there and then. But anything like stopping a mobile phone contract or a Sky subscription is really painful and time-consuming. I’ve just tried to change a phone from a contract to a payand-go arrangement and it was a full 45 minutes, with me repeatedly saying “no thank you, I don’t want a new contract, I just want pay-and-go”. It’s exhausting. And buying something…we have so much choice, I find myself bamboozled by the options, and stymied by indecision. However, as much as I dislike pushing myself to ‘get things done’, once the call has been made or the item purchase, there’s a great sense of satisfaction. Procrastination fills your headspace, and frankly there so much already in there, I can’t afford to keep anything more. I read an excellent and amusing article online recently, which talked about why we procrastinate, and importantly what to do about it. The author openly acknowledges he is a procrastinator himself, so he certainly wasn’t being smug about it. You can read this yourself at http://tiny.cc/postponing.

The Puppini Sisters at The Concorde Club To tie in with the release of a brand new album next year The Puppini Sisters announce ‘The Highlife Tour’ which will visit venues across the UK, including The Concorde Club on the 18th March. In the eight years since their inception, The Puppini Sisters (Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins and Emma Smith) have received accolades from fans as disparate as Prince Charles and Cyndi Lauper, have been awarded Gold and Multi-Platinum discs, have performed on iconic stages all over the world and have collaborated with “banging” Electro-Swing groups as well as traditional orchestras. Their new album, which was funded completely by a Pledge campaign will combine their own arrangements of classics from the Thirties to the Fifties, jazzy reinventions of pop hits, and selfpenned original songs and is sure to thrill fans old and new. The Puppini Sisters 2016 tour is one not to be missed!

BEAUTY
Gifts for Mother’s Day By Kate Duggan
Treat mum this Mother’s Day, with a luxurious beauty gift that she’d probably never dream of buying for herself.
Clarins’ make-up palettes are some of the best on the market in my opinion, and their latest offering is no exception. The Natural Glow Eye Shadow Palette, £33, features five very wearable shades, from light beige to warm brown, all housed in an attractive rosegold coloured compact. They’re easy to apply, and the palette is perfect for keeping in a handbag to transform a natural day time look into night time glam. Get it quick though; it’s a limited edition, and if previous incarnations are anything to go by, it’s likely to sell out pretty fast. If you’re looking to earn some serious brownie points, perfume is the way to go. Connock 8
London‘s Kukui is brimming with floral notes, including gardenia, Moroccan rose, white jasmine and calla lily, but it’s given a grown-up, oriental twist with notes of sandalwood, vetiver, white amber and warm vanilla. The result is a truly gorgeous fragrance, and the bottle looks rather lovely sat out on display as well. There’s a very good chance this could become her new favourite scent. At £75 for 100ml, it’s not cheap, but consider it partpayment for all that teenage angst she had to deal with. Buying a treat for a mum-to-be? Neal’s Yard Remedies Mothers range has been specially formulated to nurture women during pregnancy. The range
includes a balm, massage oil and bath oil. The balm and massage oil can help to prevent stretch marks, while the bath oil aids relaxation and a restful night’s sleep, as well as softening skin. (It also smells rather lovely too.) Prices start from £15, so the range is great value, as a little goes a long way and each bottle is packed with high quality, natural ingredients, such as lavender oil, neroli and mandarin essential oils. The Eco Chic Body Lotion and Shower Gel gift set by Green Energy Organics is ideal if you’re on a budget this Mother’s Day. Priced at £14.95, this is luxury on a shoestring. Not only are the shower gel and lotion packed with skin friendly oils, such as avocado and jojoba, but they smell divine, with notes of blackcurrant, rose, myrrh, jasmine, tonka bean, vanilla, and white musk. They’re also very gentle, as they don’t contain any dyes, sodium lauryl sulphate or parabens. Available from millabaci.com Dashing out last minute to buy a gift? Head to Marks and Spencer and check out their Pure Relaxing range. Team the body wash, body lotion and hand & nail cream with either the candle or diffuser to create an at-home spa experience. Products are scented with lavender, geranium and other oils to help mum relax, unwind and de-stress. Throw in a glass of prosecco and some music, and there’s little doubt you’ll be seen as the favourite child. Prices start from £6.

TRAVEL
New Zealand A very personal experience Stunning scenery, miles of beautiful coastline, helicopters over glaciers, eerie fjords, wineries, sulphurous geysers, the list seems almost endless. All of this is what attracts so many people to New Zealand, but what is it that makes so many return to take another look? Amity Travel believes it is down to the hospitality of the locals. New Zealand has been Amity Travel’s top destination in recent years, even outselling its nearest neighbour and tourism rival Australia. Amongst the feedback received is just how friendly, down to earth and helpful the New Zealanders are. The quietly confident, no nonsense, can-do attitude allows them to go that extra mile in making sure your holiday of a lifetime is a wonderful memory that lasts forever. Amity Travel specialise in tailoring holidays to your own personal needs and they understand what makes their clients come back and say “WOW! We can’t wait to go again”. Part of that is down to the choice of accommodation offered, from boutique B&B’s, eco lodges and farmhouses, right through to elite private homes. The one thing they have in common is that you will be staying with local people with local knowledge and all keen to pass it on in order to make your stay just that little bit different and special. The locals have even been known to take clients out on a guided tour just for the sheer enjoyment of showing them around. 12
Because for New Zealanders, making clients feel special is all about the service and scenery rather than gold taps, private spas and flat screen TV’s, it means they can cater for all budgets. Amity can offer B&Bs with views to die for, from as little as £70 a night for 2 person including breakfast, (http://www. beaconpoint.co.nz/) right through to the highly exclusive such as The Eagles Nest (www.eaglesnest. co.nz) where the top villa for 8 persons is a mere £9500 a night in high season. The majority of clients enjoy a good mixture of accommodation with one or two self catering options thrown in along the way such as Birchwood Cottages at Te Anau (www. birchwoodcottages.co.nz) or the wonderfully named Lemonade Farm at the Able Tasman (www. lemonadefarm.co.nz). Everyone should be able to spoil themselves while on holiday and there are plenty of opportunities in New Zealand to do just that. Food is a big part of New Zealand life; with so many wineries dotted around the country the opportunity to have a champagne picnic seems to arise just about everywhere, from the top of mountains to sailing through the fjords. One of the most unusual eateries has to be Nins Bin at Kaikoura, a caravan perched along the shore where you can choose your own lobster and crayfish before sitting down to enjoy your meal, whilst spotting seals. Seafood is always going
to be a winner and one of the best can be found at Moeraki, halfway between Dunedin and Christchurch. Fleurs Place at the Old Jetty looks nothing more than a shack but is reputed to offer some of the best seafood in New Zealand with such winners as Oyster Pie and Shellfish Hot Pot. With so many gastronomic opportunities along your holiday, a spot of exercise never goes amiss and what better way than a guided walk along the Milford Track which incorporates a cruise along Lake Te Anau or the Routeburn track taking in the spectacular Routeburn Falls near Queenstown. It was once said that New Zealand was closed for business. That is definitely not the case anymore, so if you are looking at a holiday in New Zealand, where better to start than talking with the travel experts at Amity World Travel. 12 Manor Court, Barnes Wallis Road Segensworth East, Fareham PO15 5TH T: 01489 579975 E: holidays@amitytravel.co.uk W: www.amityleisuretravel.co.uk

INTERVIEW
Duran Duran Duran Duran returned to the music scene in 2015, with the single ‘Pressure Off’ and the album ‘Paper Gods’. The Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache caught up with bassist John Taylor and talked collaborations, mature touring and Glastonbury. I hear you’re a fan of The Breeze? I have found myself listening a lot and you guys are almost always playing something I like listening to. Well this interview is going to go very well! <laughs> We have been loving playing ‘Pressure Off’. I watched the behind the scenes video and it’s great to see the musical brilliance of Duran Duran, Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers working together. It really is quite something! Yeah. We worked a lot with Nile in the eighties and it wasn’t until working with him on this song that we really appreciated what he brings to the room – and as a bass player, you just don’t get to play with musicians like him that often. And Mark’s a very different kind of guy – he’s like watching all the time. It was a great experience and nice to have something on the album that married the old eighties sounding Duran with the 14
contemporary Duran. It’s sort of been updated into 2015 on the album. That’s the job. You can’t just throw the baby out. You’ve got to hold onto the classic aspects but you’ve got to let in enough new energy so it sounds fresh and interesting. Otherwise you’ll just be preaching to the converted. With every album you do, you’ve got the opportunity to open things out a little bit. What ended up defining this album was the amount of featured artists we’ve got on it. And that’s not usual for you? Not at all. We like to think of ourselves as a closed shop – that’s what bands do - “we’re a gang, we’re all inclusive”. You look at the culture and what’s going on in music over the last few years and it’s all about features. You’ve got EDM and hip hop and they’re all about features. By the end of this album, we’d have anybody on it! Anybody. Come! Come! Play on our record! So you’re taking this album out on the road. Are you still up for this? Are you ready to tour? After spending two years in the studio, we’re like “get us on tour!”. You’ve got these two different experiences that make up doing what we do. There’s the introspective studio work where it’s like a ‘man cave’ and the touring balances it out. I wouldn’t want to only be a
touring musician but I wouldn’t just want to be a studio musician either. Is it going to be a bit more different for you guys? A bit more civilised? We’re very civilised! I know what you’re getting at though. You just don’t have the energy to party like you used to. Now the energy just goes into making the show as great as it can be. We’re very relaxed professionals and when you’re married and you’ve got families, it’s not like it was when you were in your twenties. But I would hope so too! I wouldn’t want to be me now doing what I was doing then – it would be pretty sad. We’ll see you at Glastonbury 2016, right? It’s got to be, right? On the main stage! That would be good wouldn’t it? Why has this not happened? I don’t know. I’ve never had the opportunity to do the ‘hard sell’ but I’m sure one day we’ll get there. I’d better get down there and do the shmooze!

Top Tyre Care Tips Iain Betson goes tyre kicking Having just forked out £450 for three tyres on the car - no it’s not a Reliant Robin; fate being what it is I fully expect the fourth one to go pop in the near future - right now I am in a zone of “tyre care awareness”. Sad I know, but if it saves me having to replace tyres on a regular basis then so be it. So here are some nuggets of tyre wisdom I’ve learnt and pass to you: 1. Use the correct pressures, and change them depending upon your load (increase for heavy use, reduce for everyday journeys). Doing this will improve stability, save fuel and prolong the tyre’s life. 2. Tread wear: check the tread wear indicators – raised areas at the base of the grooves of the tread. If the tread is level with
the indicator you have only 1.6mm of tread left. Under that and it’s a fine and three points per illegal tyre. 3. Putting nitrogen instead of air in the tyre increases its life and saves fuel as it lessens the rolling resistance by dispersing heat more effectively. 4. Avoid those kerbs: hitting them will damage the tyre side wall, with a cut or bulge raising the risk of a blowout. 5. Potholes: do your best to avoid them safely. Hitting these will damage the tyre and, quite possibly, the wheel too, especially if you have “run-flat” tyres as they have very little give in the sidewall, meaning the wheel takes more punishment. A replacement wheel is a lot more expensive than a tyre. 6. If your car has traction control, changing just one tyre can make the system behave oddly as it receives conflicting information from the different tread depths, and thus grip, on the tyres. In some cases it will even inhibit the car’s performance as it attempts to keep the car safe from what it perceives is a dangerous condition.

MOTORING
Best Small Cars by Rebecca Chaplin
VW Polo
If you don’t need to transport your worldly goods with you every time you get in your car you don’t necessarily need a big vehicle. If most of your journeys are made around town and don’t include major motorway mileage, then you may want to consider one of the latest city cars. These won’t cost you the earth to buy or to run, are great to drive and the latest crop are stylish and comfortable for everyday use. Here we’ve picked five of our favourites.
Ford Fiesta - Price: From £9,995 The Fiesta has been the best-selling car in the UK for more months than we can remember – and that’s not without good reason. The latest small Ford has plenty to offer with a well-laid out cabin, fantastic handling that makes even trips to the supermarket exciting and a superb choice of specification.
VW Polo - Price: From £11,100 The VW Polo has an enviable reputation for being a bit of a tough guy – and in the city you need a vehicle that can withstand a few bumps and scrapes. The Polo is solid both inside and out with functional layout and built-to-last materials. Although it’s at the higher end of our price scale, VW’s wellrespected residual values and reliability make it a worthy investment.
Honda Jazz - Price: From £11,695 The Honda Jazz might not be everyone’s first choice in the small car sector – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a look. The Japanese car firm’s reputation for reliability is up there with the best in the world. Couple that with some funky looks, spacious interior and competitive pricing and it may be worth taking a trip to your local Honda dealer to try one out.
Dacia Sandero - Price: From £5,995 Some of you have probably spent more on a holiday than it costs to buy this brand new car – but don’t let this bargain basement price tag put you off. The Dacia Sandero, loved by James May of Top Gear fame, is the real deal, combining back to basics interior and no thrills styling with a functional engine and practical lay out. The fact you’ll get change from £6,000 makes it even more tempting.
Vauxhall Corsa - Price: From £8,995 The Corsa is soon to be replaced by an all-new model which means there are bargains to be had on the current model. A firm favourite with new drivers and pensioners alike, the Corsa might play second fiddle to Ford’s Fiesta in the sales charts, but it’s still worth a look. It’s stylish, has an impressive array of engines to pick from and is packed with plenty of features too. 22

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Meon Valley area and Justin is finding that his approach is
a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done
work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

And Another Thing... Tom and the boastful brother in law by Tom Hughes My Dearly Beloved’s glance at the clock did not bode well. “Tom, isn’t it time you were in bed?”
“I see you’ve upgraded your kitchen, Sis.”
“Can I finish my hot chocolate first please, Mother?”
I opened my trap to have a mini boast all of my own, but was too slow out of the boasting blocks.
“Well Tom, it’s nearly ten. You have to be at the airport at five.” “Yes I know and then we’ve got to endure a whole week of it.” “A whole week of what?” “Your Kevin’s boasting.” In 1991, Sarah’s spotty brother emigrated to Canada, where he grew up, married and made his fortune. Standing bleary-eyed in the airport multi-storey, I’d only just heaved Kevin’s matching luggage into the boot when it started. “Hey Tommy, are you still driving this old heap? I change my auto every two years, on the advice of my tax planner.” “Really Kevin? How fascinating!” The drive home (apart from some quite severe boasting about his trip to Dubai) was fairly uneventful. Sarah greeted her brother warmly and once safely ensconced in the kitchen he finally - to everyone’s relief - stopped boasting about Dubai but started boasting about his house. 30
“Yes, we changed it last year, didn’t we Tom?”
“It’s a pity this place isn’t big enough for an island. You see back home I have this huge island,” “I bet it’s not as big as Richard Branson’s.” “What’s that Tommy?” A kick to the shin from Sarah was my first warning of the day. Then it was time for lunch. Back in the Mondeo we headed into town as Kevin thankfully left his island paradise behind and moved neatly onto his next subject - Kevin Junior” “Now that my boy is at Yale doing law, we have so many adjustments to make. OK $40,000 a year isn’t cheap, but when you have a gifted child, what can you do? How’s your Evan doing, Tommy?” This was my cue for some desperate parental Top Trumping. “Well funnily enough, he’s just taken his bar exams.”
Another kick from Sarah. “Well what do you know? Maybe one day they’ll lock horns in front of a judge?” “You never know Kevin, they just might.” Then Kevin spotted a generic tax-dodging coffee emporium. “Hey, let’s jump in here and grab a skinny latte. A taste from home!” We had only just taken our seats when we were greeted by Evan, wearing a company polo shirt and a wide smile. “Hi Uncle Kev! We’ve all missed you! Hi Dad, I forgot to mention - I moved branches last week!” Evan disappeared then returned with our order as I waited for the inquisition. “Tom, I thought you said…” “What? Oh Evan? Yeah. He’s qualified now. He’s a Barista.” “A barrister? “Yeah, like I say, he’s taken his bar exam and now he’s a Barista.” “A…barrister?” “Yeah, I just told you (now mumbling into my creamy hot chocolate) a…brrstrr.”
We sipped in silence. I waited for a kick from Sarah. But none came. The week slipped by until it was time to say goodbye to Kevin. Back in the airport car park I heaved his matching luggage out of the boot. Through the grey drizzle we both looked out across at the retail park in the distance. “You see, in Canada, we have none of this constant awful weather - the summers are hot and the winters are snowy and cold, they’re perfect, I…” His voice trailed off. Wondering what was the matter, I caught his eye and blow me if the old chap wasn’t blubbering! “Kev, are you ok?”
BATHROOM SHOWROOM OPEN:
Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm Saturday 9am - 4pm
“I miss England Tommy, and I miss my boy. You know something Tom, you’re a lucky guy.” Driving back through the roadworks and the pouring rain I pulled onto the drive to see Sarah arguing with the man from the water board who was about to start digging up the pavement. Well, I thought to myself, Kevin could keep his island and his money; after all, there’s no place like home… Follow Tom @groomsdaybook groomsdaybook.com

Help I Haven’t Got A Will! One of the most important documents you will sign is your will and making a will should not be overlooked or avoided. Why use a solicitor? Using an unregulated and uninsured will writer may result in a badly drafted will, with hidden charges, poor tax planning, estates being subject to the rigid rules of intestacy and vulnerable beneficiaries at risk of financial abuse, loss of benefits or without adequate provision from their parents’ estate. Solicitors are regulated and act in accordance with their professional rules. You need to know what to expect when using the services of a solicitor which
is why we will provide you with accurate information about what we will do for you and how much you will pay for our services. Our fees must be agreed with you before any work is carried out on your behalf. At Driver Belcher Solicitors we have a specialist team who are highly qualified in the preparation of wills and all other aspects of your personal legal affairs. Why should I make a Will? • you decide who benefits from your money and possessions after your death • you avoid the Rules of Intestacy • you choose who you want to administer your estate i.e. your Executors • you can avoid family arguments
and expense by making everything clear • you can maximise any reliefs from Inheritance Tax that are available to you • peace of mind What should I do if I already have a Will? You ought to review your will every three to five years. Simple changes like a change of address do not mean you have to rewrite your will. Significant events for example getting married, starting a family or inheriting money ought to prompt you to review or rewrite your will.

Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club DO YOU KNOW how Bishop’s Waltham Rotary distributes the funds that it raises? Last month I drew to your attention that a portion of the funds raised goes towards the eradication of polio in the world. Every year, we organise the annual town Carnival, which is attended by thousands of locals and raises around £12,000 for local charities. So this month I would like to focus on these charities. FIRSTLY, in the community: The BW Gateway Club is a cause which we have supported for many years. They meet twice a month, providing support for adults with learning disabilities and to help provide activities which they would probably not otherwise receive. Over the past few years we've also supported all the local Lunch Clubs, the Community Responders, the Bishop's Waltham Minibus and the BW swimming pool. We contributed to the Community Defibrillator, Citizen’s Advice, Waltham Chase Pre School, Swanmore film project, Upham Pond & the Flamingo Cricket Club. We've also donated to County/ 38

Trash to Treasures in Romsey Abbey From 23 February to 19 March, Transition Town Romsey are staging this event at Romsey Abbey to challenge the way we look at ‘waste’, and show how everyday waste materials can be recycled and up-cycled to make beautiful and useful objects. On display will be examples of recycled objects from a number of countries, along with information about how people around the world make a living from other people’s waste. Free workshops will be run by local community artists and organisations; here’s what’s confirmed so far (open to schools and groups on weekdays). You will be able to make jewellery out of junk, paper crafts from old books, new clothing from
old and decorative objects from plastic bags. Bring an old item of clothing or other object, such as a bag, to up-cycle at ‘Trash Fashion’or bring your old plastic bags to make decorative objects at ‘Plastic Fantastic’. Or just turn up and join in the fun as everything can be provided. www.transitiontownromsey.co.uk, or contact Pamela@shadow26.plus.com

GARDENING
Vertical Cover With Climbers by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Blue Clematis
Take a look at the boundaries of your garden; are they rather uninteresting, drab or perhaps even downright boring? It is time to start thinking about doing some vertical gardening - don’t just concentrate on beds, borders and beautiful containers, but think about all those upright surfaces just itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs. If you have several vertical surfaces then so much the better.
A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants. Start by taking a look at the surface you have to offer, get a rough idea of the size of the area to be covered, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive. Check your soil type too – discover whether it is sandy and free-draining, sticky and full of clay or somewhere in between as the plant you choose must be suited to the site. Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and then go from strength to strength as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole. Don’t forget that most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, then consider erecting some sort of support system on which you can grow your climbers. If you have a long stretch of wall you can break up its monotony by planting up with several
42
different plants. If you grow a wide range of plants and only allow them to reach the height of the first floor, it will make a tall, narrow building seem somewhat broader. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or self-clinging plants such as ivies are ideal for this situation, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting. Climbers are best planted in open ground, as they tend to have sizeable root systems. However, you can grow them in containers if you get really stuck, but make sure that you re-pot regularly and that you have enough space to ultimately use a really good sized container such as a half barrel. You will need to use a loam-based potting compost and add extra grit to ensure that the compost continues to drain freely. It is also essential to place a really deep layer of crocks at the base of the container so that the drainage holes are loosely covered and will not become clogged by the compost. I always add some controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, as this will help to ensure that plants get
adequately fed at least for the first few months. If you plant the container up using a triangular or V-shaped trellis panel inserted at the back surface, this will give the plant an initial support and it can then climb up this before moving on to your wall or fence. You will, of course, need to tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about. Once you have decided where to plant the climber, dig a really good sized planting hole, making sure that it is at least 18 inches (45 cm) away from the wall or fence. This may sound like a long way, but it ensures that the plant receives adequate moisture and does not suffer any adverse effects from the proximity of the nearby wall. Incorporate plenty of planting compost, well rotted manure or garden compost,
and then once you have soaked the root ball of the plant you can place it in the hole. Ideally you should position it at a 45 degree angle, so that it is already leaning towards the wall. Once you have checked that the levels are right you can spread the root system out and plant in the normal way. If your climber is already attached to some sort of support system, such as bamboo canes, it helps if you gently untie the stems from any central stake and then choose the best looking shoots and train these towards your new support system. You can use the existing bamboo canes to help it on its way. It is essential to keep climbers really well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall. Any good garden centre will have a range of plants available, but here are some suggestions for
some of those tricky sites: Vigorous climbers for a quick effect: Actinidia chinensis Akebia quinata Clematis montana Vitis coignetiae Climbers for clay soils: Campsis Celastrus scandens Clematis Ivies Golden hop Climbing hydrangea Honeysuckles (most) Vitis coignetiae Climbers for an alkaline or chalky soil: Actinidia kolomikta Akebia quinata Clematis Ivies Climbing hydrangea Jasminum officinale Honeysuckles Trachelospermum jasminoides Wisteria

South Coast Theatre To Become First Fully Sustainable Green Theatre In Europe. Award winning Titchfield Festival Theatre based in St Margarets Lane Titchfield nr Fareham are to become the first fully sustainable ‘green’ theatre in Europe. After a series of funding initiatives the company have managed to raise £500,000 which will cover a large part of the works required. Most of this is in loan monies with little or no grant funding. Titchfield Festival Theatre is the most prolific producing amateur theatre in the country and operates from 3 sites. Their main 200 seat theatre in leafy St Margarets Lane on the edge of Titchfield village is housed in a 1960’s warehouse. It has a leaky roof, no heating and costs a fortune to run. The ‘green’ refurbishment will see a 200kw bio mass boiler, supplied by Harvest Renewables; provide heat through a central heating system installed by local company IDC. Patrons will now no longer have to have blankets to keep warm during productions and actors will not have to watch their breath freeze as they speak. This first phase will be followed closely in January 2016 by phase 2, with a new insulated roof replacing the leaky cement based roof. This will have a 92kw solar panel installation placed on it. The solar panels, some of which are aero voltaic panels, will supply electricity which will more than cover the theatre’s needs and will generate a small income. The state of the art, aero voltaic technology uses the heat 46
generated from under the panels to enter the building and will keep the wardrobe and props area at a constant ambient temperature. Phase 2 will also see a large horseshow mezzanine installed round the current seating block. This new area will allow the main house to be walled off and new, and much needed community and rehearsal space to be created. All the walls will be sound proofed and insulated. Phase 3 planned for later in 2016 will see a waste water and rainwater harvesting system installed and much needed disability access built in. The total refurbishment will cost in excess of £700,000 and will eventually mean Titchfield will have a zero carbon rated theatre. Theatre Director Kevin Fraser commented. ‘’ This is a major move forward for Titchfield and the South Coast and has taken over 18 months to plan and put into place. It is sad that most of the work is being completed using finance raised through loan funding; and grant funding bodies such as the Ashden Trust,
the Arts Council and Fareham Borough Council who all talk the talk when it comes to sustainable initiatives cannot seem to release any grant funding to help us. Talk is easy, actions speak much louder than words and through our own initiative Titchfield will have a theatre to take us into the 2020’s which they can be proud of.’’ For more information contact Kevin Fraser on 07830 285571/01329 556156 Website info http:// titchfieldfestivaltheatre.org/green/
