omid djalili SCHMUCK FOR A NIGHT Omid Djalili might now be known to millions for his roles in Hollywood blockbusters and West End appearances, but he started his career in fringe theatre, moving on to the theatres of Central and Eastern Europe in the early ’90s, and then the alternative comedy circuit. But, it’s still live on stage doing stand-up where he’s at his best. Ben Williams asks him: The new show’s called ‘Schmuck for a Night’. Why Schmuck? I like the word ‘schmuck’. It means ‘fool’ or buffoon. You have to be a schmuck to do comedy in today’s climate. I’m embracing the schmuck in me to take on the big issues of our day. Plus, it’s a word that ends with ‘uck’ which can only be a good thing. I found the show mellower than your other tours. Is that fair to say? I’ve become less frenetic. I used to dance every two minutes in between the stand up. I can’t even remember why. It was mentioned to me that when I danced audiences were laughing at me not with me. So it was either stop dancing or ban my manager from the gigs. You touch on Brexit, ISIS and Trump in the show. Will the show change while you’re on the road? Well, I think the show will change even while I’m on stage. It’ll be so current sometimes audiences won’t laugh until they get home and turn on the TV.
Omid Djalili appears at the Salisbury City Hall on the 4th March 2017. 01722 434 434

We all know that 31st December and 1st January are simply dates in a calendar and, in the bigger picture, both days are likely to be identical. Still, they do act as a marker, highlighting what we have and haven’t achieved in the previous year and what we intend to do in the following year. Health based resolutions are always at the top of the ‘most popular’ lists – give up smoking, drink less alcohol, lose weight. And a new one – cut down on screen time: particularly social media, but also TV. So far, so boring. Far more fun is the type of resolution that has you doing things: going on holiday, spending more time with friends and family, start a new hobby or improve your home. Yet, as any serial procrastinator will attest, the first list is much easier to get underway. You are already smoking/drinking/eating too much so all that’s needed is to do less of it. For the proactive stuff, before you know it, it’s spring and you realise you have missed out on the good holiday deal and the kitchen still needs doing. It often helps (well at least it has helped me) to understand why you procrastinate. For me, it’s because I’m an analytical thinker and want to look at all the options before making a decision. For an emotional thinker it might be because they’ve fallen in love with the unaffordable or impractical option and nothing else matches up. I don’t have an answer. But a good start is a book called ‘How to get things done (without trying too hard)’ by Richard Templar. Written in around 100 very short ‘lessons’ even someone with the shortest attention span can manage to read it. You have to get round to buying the book first though!

Sowing the Seeds at Stonehenge National Trust volunteers and staff are sowing seeds by hand in the Stonehenge Landscape in one of Europe’s largest grassland reversion projects. Keith Steggall, National Trust Area Ranger says: “The locally sourced seeds will help to restore the chalk grassland landscape our ancestors would have known at the time of Stonehenge. In recent years the land was farmed to grow crops, but by harvesting and sowing the seeds and working with our tenant farmers to manage the land through grazing, we are succeeding in both protecting the historic monuments and bringing back the grassland landscape.” Since the grassland reversion project started, there have beensome major improvements. These include

the first sighting of an Adonis Blue butterfly in 2008, the establishment of a grassland species Sainfoin and the sound of Skylarks registered in large numbers in 2002. Keith continues: “The chalk grassland landscape took thousands of years to develop and so it will take decades for it to completely recover and so we will continue to graze the land and bring in more seeds. We’ve managed to attract many species of insects, birds and mammals including key species such as the Marbled White Butterfly, Brown Hare and birds such as the Skylark and Meadow Pipit and things are only going to improve over time.”

Gardening
Fighting the Frosts With frost, rain and perhaps even some snow, at this time of year our gardens can be in for quite a battering. Although most of your garden plants are probably fairly frost resistant, what can you do to minimise the damage to those which are not so hardy? It’s time to get outside and take some precautions. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to freezing or frosting, and thin-walled containers pose the greatest threat. Where possible, plunge your pots by digging a hole in the soil and placing the plant in its pot into the hole. If it is too heavy to move then wrap it well in several layers of bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains, using lengths of hessian to create a more appealing outermost layer if the container is in a very prominent position. If very harsh weather is forecast or a spell of mild weather has promoted some soft, new growth, drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. Alternatively, consider Easy Fleece Jackets: they come in three sizes and have a draw-string and toggle so that you can easily insert the plant and then secure it – find out more on my website www. pippagreenwood.com/products/protect-your-crops. 8
A double fleece layer can be used on plants in beds and borders too, or to protect slightly tender wall shrubs. Much larger plants can be protected with a home-made ‘cage’ – wrap a framework of four stakes or sturdy canes with netting or chicken wire, then fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth, so continue to water these, especially if they are in a sheltered spot or the weather has been dry. A deep mulch applied to the soil or compost surface before the ground freezes will help to keep water available. Although most fruit trees - like apples and pears, cherries and plums - are hardy, they are also prone to damage. The main risk is to newly opened blossom, though the buds themselves may be damaged too, with late frosts being the most
harmful. If you are planting new fruit plants, it really pays to buy from a specialist nursery and to get late-flowering varieties, as they are less likely to be flowering when there is still a risk of frost. Finally, use fleece to cover any seeds already sown out of doors. A double layer of well-anchored fleece or a fleece-covered pull-out EasyTunnel is quick and easy to install, and will help to provide protection and that bit of extra warmth for germinating seeds and seedlings. If you are planning on sowing any early varieties of crops such as broad beans or lettuce, then I’d also suggest that you cover the soil before you sow. A layer of well-anchored polythene will keep off excess rain and allow a little warmth to build up, so when you sow the seeds they won’t suffer from excess sogginess and won’t get such a cold shock. Rex Whistler: More than Murals Mottisfont House Exhibition A major exhibition of work by one of Britain’s most exceptional 20th-century artists, Rex Whistler, goes on display at the home of his final great artwork.
Running from the 14th January to the 23rd April at Mottisfont House, Romsey, Rex Whistler: More than Murals explores the talents of this extraordinary artist – creator of Mottisfont’s stunning trompe l’oeil wall paintings. Over seventy items will be on display in Mottisfont’s gallery. Some of Whistler’s best-known works will be on show, including his oil studies of Lady Caroline Paget, with whom he had a difficult and complicated love affair.
Lady Caroline Paget, Lady Duff (1913 -1973) © National Trust Images
He was a precocious talent, drawing with incredible skill from an early age, shown in juvenilia which will be displayed alongside his later works. As a young man, he was much sought after socially as a witty, elegant character, moving in bohemian circles.
His artistic career lasted only until his tragic death in the Second World War in 1944, but he has left a legacy of extraordinarily varied work. Mottisfont’s exhibition touches on all aspects of his creative output, demonstrating his artistic development and powerful imagination, with touches of humour.

BON APPÉTIT!
By Cecile
As a French sommelier, Marcel Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time”, has haunted me ever since I moved to England 23 years ago. At the heart of the book is the theme of involuntary memory, in which an experience such as a smell or a taste unexpectedly unlocks a past recollection. Every time I pass in front of a bakery, my heart stops and calls to mind my childhood in France. The taste of buttered croissants at breakfast, the feel of those crumbs on my lips, the smell of the rich, hot cocoa I religiously drank after school, the inviting glance at a pain au chocolat waiting on my plate, or the noise that fresh, crunchy baguettes made at dinner time. I will never forget.
Fabrice and Tanya Berthonneau and their typically French restaurant and café bar, ‘La Parisienne’ on Bell Street in Romsey SO51 8GY. I’m always lost for words and a little tearful when I savour a soupe à l’oignon or a roasted breast of duck there. The ambiance and the flavours bring me back to another time. Thank you to Luc for recently opening up the finest of cheese, cold meats and wine delicatessens on Latimer Street in Romsey SO51 8DF, adeptly named ‘Luc, Purveyor of Fine Foods’. A “fine épicerie” where fresh produce and great wine bottles await patiently to be picked up and satisfy your palate.
This is why I now need to thank a few of my compatriots, dotted around Hampshire, for providing me with the very best food experiences around, for making me salivate and remember once again that life is good. Thank you to Gilles Coupeau, the most talented of bakers for his fresh breads and incredible gâteaux. His ‘Boulangerie de Victor Hugo’ on the High Street in Southampton SO14 2NS is an Aladdin’s cave, full of mouth-watering pâtisseries and glorious home-made food.
Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere 12
I hope that these much-loved addresses of mine, will provide you with the same joyful experiences that a morsel of cake did for Proust. But for me, smells are perhaps even more evocative than tastes because – as any wine-buff will tell you – our noses are much more discriminating than our tongues. By Cecile

SALISBURY LADIES – Recruiting All Levels! If you still think rugby is just a sport for men, think again. Participation in Women’s rugby has doubled in the past 10 years and, of course, England Women are 15-a-side world champions. Keen to attract even more women to the game, Salisbury RFC in conjunction with England Rugby have launched their new Women and Girls’ programme ‘Pitch up and Play’, open to women of all abilities.
Women are encouraged to play to their strengths whether they’re fast, agile, tall or strong. The key focus is encouraging women into the sport with inclusive, enjoyable and informative sessions, whether they’re brand new to rugby, a sofa supporter or a returning player. Currently Salisbury has a great girls team but they are looking to encourage more ladies to come along. Geoff Wilman has produced some great results with an eager group of girls – some of whom have secured places at county level recently. The ladies train on a Tuesday night from 6.30pm till 9.00pm and all are welcome. FOR SENIORS Social interaction with warm and friendly companion can be essential to anyone’s well-being. Doctors say a patient’s social needs are just as important to address as their medical conditions. As we age we often lose touch with others due to special circumstances that limit our ability to travel, drive a car or otherwise stay connected with family and friends.
Services we provide: • Conversation and company • Help to plan and arrange social activities • Help to carry on with hobbies • Help with taking care of everyday chores • Hospital visits and more... And Another Thing...
Tom’s New year resolution by Tom Hughes January - a new beginning, a new start. Sarah, my Dearly Beloved, plonked a cup of green tea in front of me and announced: “Tom I have decided that 2017 is the year of change. I have new dreams for this family. But before I go on, I want to hear all about your New Year’s resolutions.” Replacing my copy of Diesel Injectors for Dummies on the coffee table, my thoughts turned for the first time to the impending twelve months. “Well for starters, I am determined to avenge Nigel for his 4-0 whitewash on the pool table in the bar of the Old Paraffin Lamp. But of course that means more practice, so...” Apparently, my punishing training schedule on the threadbare green baize in the bar of our local was not the kind of resolution Sarah had in mind. A glossy tome was unceremoniously plonked into my lap. “Welcome to Whitefield Gardens, your new Johnson Ian Home. What on earth is this?”
“Come on, grab your coat - we’re going house hunting.”
Weaving the Mondeo around the exposed ironworks of an unadopted road, I eased my chariot into the visitor’s car park. Slaloming through a strange wrought iron maze, Sarah guided me into 22
an office adjoining a newly constructed house. “This is the show home, Tom, isn’t it lovely?”
“The architect hasn’t half gone to town on the study hasn’t he? I could fit three desks in here.” A middle aged lady wearing an azure blue suit, sporting Shirley Temple curls and a face the colour of burnt ochre rose from behind her desk and announced, “Sir, this isn’t an office, this is the garage.”
Wondering how easy it would be to smash the Mondeo through the double glazing, I followed Shirley Temple and Sarah through a white door into a white kitchen. I was about to step onto the shiny marble floor when our host span round and, holding up two blue plastic bags, requested that we put them on so as not to bring in any dirt into the show home. I dutifully complied and followed the two ladies towards the beautiful surroundings. As Sarah engaged Miss Temple in a conversation about light fittings, I decided to chip in with my twopenn’orth. “So how much is this pad anyway?” The two ladies turned to face me. Shirley Temple smirked, Sarah was appalled. “Tom, those blue covers are not for your head - take it off!” “Oh right, I wondered why I had two anyway.” “No, not on your hands, on your feet!”
Suitably protected, I popped my head into a cupboard under the stairs. “Someone’s left a toilet
in here.”
A stony-faced Miss Temple corrected me. “That’s the downstairs cloakroom, sir. And through here is the lounge.” I followed Sarah into a modern-day front parlour where I nestled into the soft furnishings. “This armchair is very generous, I bet with a squeeze we could both fit on here.” “Tom, that’s the sofa. By the way I love the wallpaper.”
Shirley Temple beamed. “Thank you! We’ve had the whole house dressed by our interiors team.” “When are they going to finish it off ? What about the rest of it?” “Tom - that is called a feature wall.”
Suitably chastised we adjourned upstairs to a collection of pokey rooms, most of which seemed to contain toilets. “Look Sarah, there’s another loo in here!”
“Tom, they are en-suites. I just love the way they’ve designed it all.” “Bit cramped though isn’t it? Imagine shoehorning
all our stuff into here?”
“Well that’s the whole point, isn’t it dear - we are going to have to declutter!”
Miss Temple, irked at my candid remarks, through the most insincere of smiles said, “Maybe, sir, our Heritage Range of homes has not been aimed at people...like you.” “Then who have they been aimed at? Lilliputians with weak bladders?”
On the way home (conducted mainly in silence), I detoured to our local DIY store in an effort to repair marital relations, where I allowed myself to be frogmarched into the home interiors section and vigorously schooled on the benefits of the ‘feature wall’. And that, dear reader, is the story of how your narrator became the owner of a) one wallpaper table, and b) one rather unwelcome New Year’s resolution…

Recipe
raspberry and Vanilla Panna Cotta
Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour plus overnight chilling
These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat! • 75g fresh raspberries, pureed • 1 sheet leaf gelatine PANNA COTTA • 600ml double cream • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips lemon rind • 50g caster sugar • 2 sheets leaf gelatine • Few drops pink food colouring TO SERVE • 2 ready-made chocolate brownies, halved horizontally • Fresh raspberries 28
1. To make the raspberry jelly hearts, line a small 6cm square
dish with cling film. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for 2-3 minutes. Heat the raspberry puree in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Remove the gelatine leaf from the water and stir into the hot puree until dissolved. Pour into the lined dish and leave to cool, then chill in the fridge until set.
2. When the jelly is set, use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to stamp out 4 heart shapes and place each one in the base of a small heart shaped ramekin dish (each about 150ml capacity).
3. To make the panna cotta, place the cream, vanilla extract,
lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat.
4. Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves as in step 1. Remove
from the water and stir into the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set.
5. To serve, cut and trim the halved brownies to make
four heart shapes the same size as the ramekins. Dip each ramekin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds to release the panna cotta then turn each one out onto a heartshaped brownie. Decorate with fresh raspberries.

ADVERTORIAL
Mould, Damp or Salt on the Walls? Almost every homeowner at some time in their lives, experiences damp problems. Mildew, efflorescence (salts on the surface of the wall) and blistering plaster, means it needs treating as soon as possible and the plaster replacing with a “breathable” alternative. BKM Mannesmann UK ltd has a simple but technologically advanced treatment system for rising and penetrative damp. The process protects inside or outside walls of all construction types and materials.
The technology is developed from extensive experience in Germany and is now available in your area. The BKM product microscopically coats all the pores in the material, creating a hydrophobic barrier in all types of brick, stone-work, masonry, cement and lime render. It can be “gravity-fed” or pressure infused into the walls, dependent upon the condition of the wall. BKM also has an external breathable wall protection application, which seals all types of render, salt impregnated brickwork. Lime based paints and render can also be protected under
the 25-year Guarantee. Christian Franceschi, Regional Director for BKM Mannesmann UK ltd, says, “Thanks to this publication, there are many people in Hampshire & Wiltshire who have recently installed our system and are extremely Christian Franceschi, Regional Director satisfied with BKM Mannesmann Uk ltd the results” FOR YOUR FREE survey, contact Christian email: c.franceschi@bkmmannesmann.com or call him on: 01962 940 005 www.bkm-mannesmann.com

Under Houston control Although the Salisbury East edition of the Discover Magazines is delivered by Royal Mail due to the rural nature of the area, over half of our 144,000 distribution is conducted by local people including in the Romsey and Winchester areas. Our deliveries don’t take all day every day though, and as our Distribution Manager Kevin Houston has recently taken delivery of a new van, he is branching out into other services. Kevin will consider most jobs but is specialising in ‘awkward’ deliveries. If it’s fragile, impossible to wrap and generally can’t be shipped or put in a car, Kevin and his team are ready to step in. And, with 30 years’ experience of motorbike riding, there’s nothing Kevin doesn’t know about handling a bike so that’s work he’s keen to take on. “I’m offering collection and delivery 32
for any size bike. Whether your bike needs a service, you’ve just bought or sold one, or you are going to track day, you can be sure of a safe and expert service.” You might think that hiring a van and using your own labour is cheaper. But the hassle and the stress of trying to drive a vehicle with which you are unfamiliar shouldn’t be underestimated. Kevin says “when I used to hire a van, I saw damaged vehicles all the time. Sometimes just a scrape, sometimes significant damage. It’s just not the same as driving a family car.” With the whopping excess on hire vans – often as high as £1200 – you really need to think twice. Whatever you need doing, there’s no cost for asking so just call or see the website for prices.
