Editor’s Letter
do you have something to tell me? We have a monthly get-together to exchange ideas about what we are going to put into each of our magazines. Advertising will always be in of course – your support of the businesses is what pays for everything else. Our preference is always anything local and particularly events. But the area to which we distribute this edition is very rural and without the potential audience that a town has there’s always going to be less happening. This little map shows you where we cover (we use the Post Office for delivery so every home in this area
receives a copy). So each month I look at the what’s on listings have to decide ‘too far to travel? Or worth it’. I’m guessing that while you have the benefit of living in beautiful rural surroundings, travelling to other areas is one of the downsides that you have to accept. So I’ll include events in Winchester, Romsey, Salisbury and Andover when I can find them. But can I ask a favour? If you know of anything happening near where you live – a country fair, a village market, a local play type of thing – send in the details to editorial@ discovermagazines.co.uk. That’ll make the magazine interesting and useful for the recipients and – let’s be honest – make my life just a little bit easier! Thank you.

Short Story
lost and found
By Jackie Brewster
“A gentleman’s come in with a lost and found card for the window.” Carly was new to the job at the village newsagent, and felt as though she was constantly interrupting poor Frances with questions. “What should I say to him?” “Is he wearing a flat cap covered in badges?” Frances looked up from a pile of invoices.
“I’m sure someone must have claimed it by now,” Mr Pemrose said, turning cheerfully to Carly. “Can you find it, dear?”
The gentleman in question was stood at the counter holding a crisp white postcard. He smiled at the sight of Frances.
Carly pulled each card out of its slot and read the descriptions. There were lost cats and bus passes, found cats and bus passes, and every now and then she recognised Mr Pemrose’s neat handwriting. These found things were strange. He’d found a cherry tree in full bloom in February, a double rainbow over the moor and the song of a thrush at midnight. Who could possibly have lost these things she wondered.
“I’m intrigued to hear what you’ve found this week, Mr Pemrose,” she said warmly.
Finally, she found a fading card about a field of candyfloss.
“I’m glad you asked,” he winked. “I found a cloud of starlings over Kirk’s Farm that looked, for a moment, like the ribbon on a birthday present.”
“Would you like the old card back?” she asked, slipping the new card into the vacant slot.
“Yes,” Carly said. “It keeps slipping over his eyes.” “That’s Mr Pemrose.” Frances took off her glasses and pushed back her chair. “I’ll be right there.”
“How wonderful,” Frances said taking the card from him. “Carly would you mind putting this in the window so that passers-by can see it?” Greatly puzzled, Carly took the neatly written card, and squeezed herself between the crisp boxes and the window to reach the lost and found display. “I’m afraid there are no spaces left. Are there any old cards that could be taken down?” “I’m sure there’s a few,” Frances said. “What do you think Mr Pemrose, shall we make some space?” “Oh yes.” The man chuckled as the hat again slipped over his eyes. “Maybe the one about the full moon that rolled up Copper Hill can go?” 6
“Perhaps,” Frances said, “but has that snowy field you found that looked like candyfloss now been returned to its rightful owner?”
“You keep it,” he said, adjusting his hat while opening the door. With a ring of its bell he left. Carly dusted down her jeans. “Well I don’t know what he’s found,” she said, “but I strongly suspect he’s lost his marbles.” “Mr Pemrose is perfectly sane,” Frances laughed. “But why does he do it?” Carly asked. “No one has lost a flock of starlings, because they don’t belong to anyone, so how can he say that he’s found one?” “Because a year ago Mr Pemrose saw a card posted in our window which said ‘LOST – MY SENSE OF WONDER’,” Frances said. “Ever since then he’s been trying to reunite them with it.”

“Weren’t you concerned for the person who posted it?” Carly worried.
“I can’t remember,” Frances frowned. “A lost umbrella maybe; nothing to lose any sleep over.”
“Oh, no,” Frances laughed, “the card didn’t originally say that; condensation had made the ink run.”
“Does Mr Pemrose know?” Carly asked.
“So what did it really say?” Carly asked.
“If he does it hasn’t stopped him,” Frances smiled. “Besides, everyone likes to read his cards. We all mislay our sense of wonder occasionally.” 7

RHUBARB and Almond tart
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes plus chilling time
A delicious tart with a layer of tangy roasted rhubarb topped with a sweet almond frangipane. Serve warm or cold with crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream. • Flour, for dusting • 300g ready-made shortcrust pastry • 250g rhubarb, trimmed and chopped • 175g caster sugar • 3 tbsp orange juice • 150g unsalted butter, melted • 125g ground almonds • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 medium eggs, beaten • Icing sugar, for dusting 10
1. Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas Mark 6. Lightly
dust a work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness. Use to line a 23cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, place the rhubarb, 25g of the caster sugar and the orange juice in a shallow roasting tin. Roast in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until just tender, turning once. Leave to cool.
3. Trim off the excess pastry from around the edge of the chilled
pastry case and prick the base all over with a fork. Line the case with baking paper and baking beans and bake blind for 10 minutes. Remove the beans and lining and bake for a further 5 minutes until pale golden.
4. Strain the rhubarb from the roasting juices and spoon into the pastry case. Beat together the melted butter, remaining caster sugar, ground almonds, vanilla extract and eggs in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Gently spread over the rhubarb.
5. Bake the tart for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden and just set. Serve warm or cold dusted with icing sugar. See tip for serving suggestion.

Discovering Britain: the Shell Heritage Art Collection Iconic images of the British landscape, including some local scenes, go on show at the National Trust’s Mottisfont House this later this year.
Invoking a spirit of escape and adventure, posters commissioned by Shell from the 1920s – 1950s featured historic landmarks and inspiring scenes of British countryside, brought vividly to life by artists such as Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland, Rex Whistler and Vanessa Bell.
The Shell Heritage Art Collection is one of the most Edna Clarke Hall - Lavenham, courtesy of the Shell Heritage Art Collection important collections of commercial art in Britain, spanning years of advertising campaigns. Mottisfont’s exhibition focuses on the early twentieth-century period, when Shell’s advertising was driven by ideas of travel and discovery, featuring the slogans ‘See Britain First’ and ‘Visit Britain’s Landmarks’. Exquisite artwork depicting quirky and interesting places encouraged drivers to get on the road and explore the British Isles. Other material commissioned by Shell, including wall charts, film and travel guides, will also be on show. This is a new and unique exhibition, on loan from the Shell Heritage Art Collection based at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu. The exhibition will take place between the 6th May and 2nd July.

I LOVE GIN. And apparently, I’m not the only one... Fetch the ice and tonic – the gin industry in the UK is indeed booming, with 49 distilleries opening in 2016 alone, and £400 million spent on buying gin bottles. The trend for small batch gin is still on the increase this year with new gin lists popping up in restaurants, pubs and bars all over the county, Winchester leading the way of course! But do you know which gin you actually prefer? And why? The Hampshire Wine School offers an education, in a fun and relaxed way at the Winchester Wessex Hotel, on how gin is created, and how to make THE perfect Gin & Tonic by comparing 5 styles of gin, 3 premium tonics and 5 types of botanicals. A real mouth-watering and eyeopening experience for £32.50pp. Do not miss out on Winchester’s forthcoming House of Gin Festival either, which is returning to Winchester GuildHall on Saturday 27th May, 5pm-10pm, in association with Winchester Distillery and East Imperial tonic and mixers. The Festival will have three Gin bars showcasing a wide selection of small batch and Award Winning Gins. Producers shall also run masterclasses on how their gin is distilled, offer tastings and an opportunity to purchase bottles at a discounted rate. Copperhead Gin, Nordes gin, Marylebone Gin, Liverpool Gin,

Nginiuos Gin, Brennen & Brown Gin, 6 o’clock Gin, Burleighs Gin and Elephant Gin to name a few will be presented on the day. Tickets on sale for £8.03 at EventBrite.co.uk. My favourite gin of the moment is Pinkster Gin, as it makes a refreshingly different G&T, with a delicate raspberry flavour appealing both to seasoned gin drinkers and recent converts. It even won ‘Overall Best Contemporary Gin’ at The Gin Guide Awards 2017! So, how about this wonderful ‘Je T’Aime’ pink cocktail for the one you love. … • 37.5ml Pinkster Gin
• 15ml Chambord liqueur (or raspberry equivalent) • 50ml Pineapple juice

Mompesson House now open for the 2017 season The National Trust team at Mompesson House in Salisbury’s Cathedral Close opened its doors for the 2017 season on the 11 March with a new exhibition and shop.
Emma James, Visitor Experience Officer said ‘this year’s exhibition is called New Beginnings: The story of the National Trust at Mompesson House. We’re celebrating the 40th anniversary of the redecorating, furnishing and opening of Mompesson to visitors. ‘In 1975 the National Trust inherited an empty house following the death of the last resident Denis Martineau. Over the next two years the National Trust refashioned the house as it might have been in its Georgian heyday. We’ve found lots of wonderful photographs and documents in our archives which we’re looking forward to sharing with visitors. ‘The house was furnished with loans and bequests of furniture, paintings and objects from individuals, museums and other National Trust properties. We’re showcasing some of the items which are still in the house today and displaying some rarely seen objects too, including some of the Turnbull collection of eighteenth-century drinking glasses.
‘We’re also very excited that our new shop in the Studio in the courtyard is now open. The shop has a 1960s theme, inspired by Denis Martineau’s interior decoration which has been preserved and there are a range of gifts for you and your home. Mompesson House is a homely and welcoming eighteenth-century townhouse in the heart of

outdoor relaxation When you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. So, concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes.
early evening.
Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax?
Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium which grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke.
Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’. If you have an arch, arbour, pergola or even a spare bit of fence then train a honeysuckle over it. Its delicately coloured flowers and fabulous perfume will cheer you up and you can even enjoy it in the 32
A sowing of night-scented stock will produce plants that are perfect for early evening relaxation, as this is when the flowers open and produce wafts of really sweet scent. If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume.
Artemisia abrotanum has soft grey-green leaves that will make you want to touch it, which releases a lovely aroma. The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so grow this in a sunny spot with free-
draining soil, perhaps to edge a border. It not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell. Grasses and bamboos work well too; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently is one of the most relaxing sounds I know, and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form

wonderfully rounded and quite irresistible clumps of foliage. When it comes to choosing flowers, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. Green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so include plenty of plants with good foliage, and, in shady areas, a miniature grotto-like patch planted up with ferns is wonderful. And finally, before you rush off to the garden centre to buy some of these truly magical ingredients, just a reminder that water in a garden always helps to relax you. Whether it’s a small pond or perhaps a bubble fountain, position it where you can hear that sound of moving water or enjoy watching the wildlife as it comes to feed and drink - and before you know it, you will find that you want to move the whole of your life into your garden. UK’s Largest History Festival 26 June to 2 July The Chalke Valley History Festival has been held annually since 2011 and boasts of being the largest history festival in the UK. It began 2011 on a small scale and has now grown to be a week of talks, discussions, debates, as well as extensive and immersive living history and an historic air display. This year it moves to a new site in Broad Chalke (SP5 5DP).
“The aim is to excite, enthral and entertain. An understanding of the past is essential,” says Co-Founder James Heneage. “Without that, it is impossible to make sense of the present or prepare for the future.” All proceeds from the festival have, since 2012, been directed to the Chalke Valley History Trust, which promotes the understanding of history to all ages, but especially children. Since 2013, the festival has also incorporated the History Festival for Schools. cvhf.org.uk.
