Christingle in Stockbridge Help make vulnerable children’s voices heard this Christmas In the UK there are almost 4 million children and young people dealing with hardship, abuse and neglect which are ruining childhoods and future prospects.

Stockbridge Christmas, St. Peter’s Church and Stockbridge Primary & Pre-School are inviting the local community to help bring hope to some of the UK’s most vulnerable children by supporting their Christingle celebration in aid of The Children’s Society. This unique Christmas service will be held at St Peter’s Church on 2nd December 2016 at 5.30pm and is open to everyone. Any money raised will go towards providing life-changing support for vulnerable children and young people and to make sure their voices are heard. It is hoped that many local children and their parents will mark the beginning of Christmas in support of this famous charity.

Christingle is a tradition that has been taking place for almost half a century and involves lighting a candle in a decorated orange which symbolises different aspects of the Christian story. Candles will be handed out to all children at the school so that they can make their very own Christingle and bring it to the service. There will be an opportunity

for local residents to help in the making of them as well. You are welcomed to tea and a mince pie from 4.30pm onwards and help in their production. With around one million people attending each year, the Christingle fundraising events play a key role in supporting The Children’s Society’s vital work to help some of this country’s most vulnerable children. This year, the charity is aiming to raise £1.2 million and all funds raised will be crucial to its work. Emma Jefferies, Headteacher at the School said: “We are really looking forward to our first Christingle. It’s so important for our children to understand the lives of other children around the world and this worthy cause helps us achieve this.” Matthew Reed, Chief Executive of The Children’s Society, said: “We’re delighted that Stockbridge Christmas, the Church and School are organising a Christingle service and we’re truly grateful for their support.

We all know that 31st December and 1st January are simply dates in a calendar and, in the bigger picture, both days are likely to be identical. Still, they do act as a marker, highlighting what we have and haven’t achieved in the previous year and what we intend to do in the following year. Health based resolutions are always at the top of the ‘most popular’ lists – give up smoking, drink less alcohol, lose weight. And a new one – cut down on screen time: particularly social media, but also TV. So far, so boring. Far more fun is the type of resolution that has you doing things: going on holiday, spending more time with friends and family, start a new hobby or improve your home. Yet, as any serial procrastinator will attest, the first list is much easier to get underway. You are already smoking/drinking/eating too much so all that’s needed is to do less of it. For the proactive stuff, before you know it, it’s spring and you realise you have missed out on the good holiday deal and the kitchen still needs doing. It often helps (well at least it has helped me) to understand why you procrastinate. For me, it’s because I’m an analytical thinker and want to look at all the options before making a decision. For an emotional thinker it might be because they’ve fallen in love with the unaffordable or impractical option and nothing else matches up. I don’t have an answer. But a good start is a book called ‘How to get things done (without trying too hard)’ by Richard Templar. Written in around 100 very short ‘lessons’ even someone with the shortest attention span can manage to read it. You have to get round to buying the book first though!

And Another Thing...

Tom and the christmas lights

by Tom Hughes

The crisp December air vaporised my breath as I skidded across the drive, shaking the last of the table salt onto the flags as I went. Suddenly I was blinded by a terrible seasonal apparition. Mrs Murphy, my neighbour from over the road, had flicked on her Christmas lights. I staggered back as spots danced before my eyes. The strain on my pupils (not to mention the National Grid) was all too apparent as Mrs Murphy’s much-extended semidetached hummed into life. Reindeer, gnomes and, bizarrely, a festive ET, blazed out across The Avenue - Yuletide beacons for any passing sleighs or low-flying aircraft.

Tripping into the house I stamped my feet on the bristles. “Disneyland is back on again.” Sarah glanced through the porch door. “Well I think it’s lovely. She goes to so much trouble and it makes me feel so Christmassy. Speaking of decorations isn’t about time you made your annual pilgrimage?”

The loft ladders gave their familiar groan as I eased myself up into the eaves. The dusty boxes that we’d taken down from the last loft ten years ago sat impassively - inured to the passage of time. After much scratching and cursing (which sadist invented fibreglass?) I managed to locate our box of decorations. Sarah regarded them. “Tom, they are pathetic. If we put those up, Mrs Murphy’s effort will put us to shame.” “This isn’t a competition dear. Don’t worry - Santa comes down all the chimneys, even the poorly 6

decorated ones.”

“Just for that, you can sort this lot out.” Whereupon the Gordian knot, otherwise known as tangled fairy lights, was handed to me by Sarah.

“Well it’s your own fault for stuffing them back in like that last January!” This way and that I wrestled with the blasted cord until finally I managed to straighten them out. Eventually the plastic Christmas tree was wonkily placed in the porch and decorated with baubles, dusty Santas and the lights. More out of hope than expectation, I plugged them in. “Right ready? By the way, before I switch these on, is it too late to call one of the Spice Girls?”

“Tom, stop messing about and flick the switch.” Phiszzz. The lights glowed, then popped, then…nothing. “Right! That’s it - go and find some decent decorations!”

I stared at the rows of glittery kitsch in the temporary pop-up Christmas shop. Which illuminated Santa should I purchase? They all looked equally gaudy. Haplessly, I asked a swarthy-looking gentleman sat at the till. He was head down with his eyes glued to a smart phone, so I cleared my throat to attract his attention. “This one, or this one?” I asked. The plastic beaming Santas smiled blindly at the opposite wall. The assistant stared at me blankly then went back to Angry Birds. I bought both. Back home, Sarah grabbed both my Santas, went outside and nailed them violently to the wall. And so the big day, as it always does, came around. The Christmas dinner was almost ready. As the

whole brood chatted happily, I strained to listen to Her Majesty the Queen on the telly while Sarah’s famous bread sauce bubbled on the hob. Then out of the window I noticed that Mrs Murphy’s house was in total darkness. Ignoring Sarah’s complaints about ruining my new slippers, I tip-toed across the road and tapped on the window. Eventually Mrs Murphy appeared. “Are you OK?” I asked hopefully. “No, Mr Hughes, I’m waiting for the emergency electrician but it might be hours yet. My daughter is in London with her boyfriend but...” Mrs Murphy’s tears suddenly began to well up. “Oh Mr Hughes, Christmas isn’t the same since Henry passed away.” “So you’re on your own in this dark cold house?”

“I’m going to put my camper stove on to warm up some soup.”

“On Christmas Day? Mrs Murphy - grab your coat.”

And so, for the first time ever, Mrs Murphy crossed our threshold and sat down with us for Christmas dinner. Outside the elves and Santas were in darkness, but inside our house the warmth of our toast to Mrs Murphy (sat imperiously on her emergency chair) gave her a smile bright enough to illuminate any seasonal table. Merry Christmas Everybody!

HIGH SPEED BROADBAND FOR VILLAGES IN THE TEST VALLEY AND THE DUN VALLEY

Future Proofing for your home, your family and your business Would you like faster broadband? Many local properties have limited and often no access to high speed broadband now or in the foreseeable future. A group of residents across a number of your villages are working with Virgin Media to trial a ‘demand driven’ rural pilot scheme. Virgin Media have created a ‘virtual town’, which is comprised of 4000 premises across 12 villages, and they plan to put fibre optic cable into each home and business, provided that demand is demonstrated. In order to make this project go live, 1200 of the 4,000 premises need to have registered their interest by Christmas 2016. If residents can prove there is a real demand for this amazing service, then Virgin Media plan to start building the network in April 2017. We aim to be the most technically accessible villages, across Hampshire and Wiltshire, to live and work in. Even if you are satisfied with your current service, registering helps your neighbours and neighbouring villages who haven’t been so lucky to obtain the same level of service that 95% of the population in the UK now take for granted. Please register your interest at: www.virginmedia.com/cablemystreet. You are not personally committing to anything - just giving your name, address and email – and expressing an interest in knowing more about the scheme. Join now and get all our communities up to speed for the twenty first century. Visit our facebook page to find out more, “like” us, and help spread the word. www.facebook.com/tvneed4speed 8

What you may have access to today – Broadband via Fibre to the Cabinet • It only works if you are within 1km from the cabinet • The speed reduces significantly per metre away from the cabinet, made worse by deteriorating copper wiring • The cabinet itself may not have the capacity to serve all the properties in a village • Fibre to cabinet is not future proof with respect to speed or predicted data usage What Fibre to the Home offers you: • Average speeds of 155Mbit/s at peak periods with up to 200Mbit/s off peak • Ability to support speed increases for the next 30+ years • Highly competitive pricing and services • The opportunity to work from home and to use the internet 24 x 7 without interruptions • The opportunity to make telephone calls over the internet rather than using a landline • An investment in the future saleability of your home • Opportunity for those who are elderly or need regular care to stay in their own home by using advances in telemedicine and telehealth

Do you want faster Broadband? VIRGIN MEDIA PLAN TO PUT FIBRE OPTIC CABLE STRAIGHT INTO YOUR HOME AND BUSINESS Register your interest online today www.virginmedia.com/cablemystreet

It takes less than 5 minutes to do, with no commitment.

• A ‘virtual town’ has been created in the Test Valley which includes 12 villages* in the local area, totalling 4,000 premises. • Data usage is increasing by 50% every 18 months. • The current broadband network will not support the speeds you will need in 5 years’ time. • 200Mbps over fibre optic cable. No need for copper cables. • 1200 of 4000 premises in the area need to be registered by Christmas if the project is to go ahead. • House sales and prices are increasingly impacted by broadband speeds.

Bon AppÉTIt!

By Cecile

I LOVE WINCHESTER. I do hate parking there, it’s a logistical nightmare … but once I manage to park then I love going there for a fabulous shopping experience, a casual stroll along the river, a look around the imposing Cathedral and best of all … for food and drinks! Which brings me to the best news EVER. The quaint King Alfred pub and rooms at 11 Saxon Road is being fully refurbished and is due to have reopened by the end of October! I simply cannot wait to see the changes that Jayne from the Little Pub Group has in store for her new venue. She has turned many Winchester pubs around, including the now fabulous Green Man at 53 Southgate Street, the fun Mucky Duck at 84 High Street, St James Tavern at 3 Romsey Road and Corner House on Grove Road. Expect quirky, vintage and shabby chic furnishings, a cosy atmosphere, mouth-watering menus, a cool beer selection and fab wine list, friendly staff and The Westgate superb rooms.

Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere 10

The King Alfred Talking about new management, the Westgate pub with rooms at 2 Romsey Road has also been refurbished, but this time by the City Pub Company, which also owns trendy Alfie’s at 157 High Street. I was amazed at the transformation. It is now much bigger than it used to be and so beautifully decorated. I love going there for a pint, so say hi to James from me, as he will help you chose a refreshing beer amongst his great selection of real ales – from local micro-breweries including Itchen Valley, Flowerpots and Winchester-based Red Cat – to drink alongside their new winter menu. Hold on, there is more … James made me swear to secrecy, but he’s in the middle of outsourcing 15 different styles of whiskies and gins … but sssshhhh, you didn’t hear it from me, ok?!

TREAT SOMEONE TO THE ULTIMATE WINE EXPERIENCE! The perfect gift for wine lovers -

Recipe

Pepper and turkey stuffed sweet potatoes

Serves 4

A quick and easy vegetarian dish full of Indian flavour. If you don’t have all Readybasmati in 1 hour the spices just use 1-2 tbsp medium curry paste. Serve with boiled 15 minutes rice or warmed naan breads, if liked.

This is a tasty and healthy post-Christmas day family supper and a great way to use up leftover roast turkey. • 4 medium-sized sweet potatoes, scrubbed • 2tbsp olive oil • 1 red onion, peeled and chopped • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and sliced • 225g cooked turkey breast, diced • 1 x 230g tub fresh tomato salsa • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 100g Cheddar cheese, grated • Chopped avocado, lime wedges and freshly chopped parsley, to serve 14

1. Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Prick the potatoes all over with a fork and place on a baking tray. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until tender.

2. Just before the potatoes are ready, heat half the oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for 6-7 minutes until tender, adding the garlic after 5 minutes. Add the peppers and turkey and fry for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in 2 tbsp of the tomato salsa and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

3. Halve the baked sweet potatoes and roughly mash up the flesh with a fork. Season lightly and drizzle over half the remaining oil, then pile the turkey and pepper mixture on top of the halves. Scatter over the cheese and drizzle over the rest of the oil. Return to the oven for 10-12 minutes until the cheese has melted. 4. Serve with chopped avocado and lime wedges and sprinkled with freshly chopped parsley. Spoon the rest of the salsa into a small bowl and serve on the side.

TIP

For a vegetarian version replace the turkey with halved chestnut mushrooms or diced aubergine or courgette and use vegetarian Cheddar cheese.

GEORGE SKEATES FUN RUN In the summer of 1985, international side-car cross passenger George Skeates was paralysed from the waist down while competing. He was treated at the spinal injuries unit in Odstock, Salisbury. Stockbridge based fan Mike Crossman organised a one-off Fun Run the following January 1986, to raise funds to help self-employed George with his young family. No event was run in 1987/8 after Mike was himself taken ill with a heart attack but with two exceptions, the event has been held every year since. Funds were subsequently diverted to support the INSPIRE Foundation, the Salisbury based charity for the rehabilitation of those with spinal injuries and after Mike's death from heart disease in 1994, funds were also diverted to support Wessex Heartbeat, also locally based in Southampton. The event is held in January, as that is traditionally the motocross off season, although nowadays the majority of participants nothing to do with motorbikes. The event is orientated towards fun and offers a choice of two cross country routes; 1 tough, mostly cross-country circuit of 8 miles and 1 moderate road / off road mix of about 3 miles. Participants run, jog walk or they ride mountain bikes. The next event is Sunday 08 January 2017. Sponsorship is welcomed. Contact 'jebcrossman@gmail.com for information'

ALEX LEWIS TO SWITCH ON LIGHTS Stockbridge will be hosting their annual pre-Christmas Edwardian themed evening to mark the Advent season on the 2nd December between 5pm and 10pm. There will be many festivities and entertainment along a twinkling High Street including Suffolk punches pulling Santa’s sleigh to carry people up and down the High Street to Santa’s Grotto at the Owl & Pussy Cat and to a magical Christingle service at St. Peters where the courageous Alex Lewis accompanied by the Middle Wallop Military Wives Choir will switch on the Christmas lights. To support this event many of the shops will be staying open late offering wine and mince pies, the Stockbridge Country Market will be in the Town Hall, the famous award-winning Robinson’s bangers will be on sale “under the arch”, roast chestnuts, candy floss, Twistina the amazing balloon lady, live music and carol singing - all to celebrate the inclusive meaning of Christmas, pick up that special Christmas gift and have an early evening out for all the family. The lights will be switched on by the inspirational Alex Lewis. In 2013 Alex Lewis, from Stockbridge, collapsed and was rushed to Winchester ICU. His only symptom leading up to this was a common cold. Within a few hours his vital organs were being supported mechanically, his blood forced around his body with nora-adrenalin and his chances of survival; “less than 5%.” Alex, 35 who has a partner and a 4 year old son, had contracted Strep A – usually nothing more than a sore throat. But, for Alex it took a menacing turn into Strep A Toxic Shock Syndrome, a very rare and devastating infection. After 7 days in ICU Alex beat the odds to survive but appallingly Alex lost each of his limbs along with a large section of his face to Necrotising Fasciitis, a rampant bacterial infection that requires urgent amputation to stop it spreading. In spite of all this, over the last two years Alex has made incredible progress and today is campaigning for improved support and equipment for amputees. He is able to walk again with the aid of specialist equipment, much of which is not available to him through the NHS. Over the course of his lifetime Alex will need over £1m for proper prosthetics and equipment which he will be required to fund himself. www. alex-lewis.co.uk/ Search for Stockbridge Christmas on Facebook for the latest news. 18

Gardening

gardening gifts

By Pippa Greenwood

It is not that long until Christmas now, and if you’ve any gardening friends it is so easy to get them a present they’ll really enjoy and find useful. Any good local garden centre will have plenty of potential gifts in a wide range of prices, sizes and shapes to suit anybody from the complete novice to the most experienced gardener. Alternatively, take a look on the internet and get some gorgeous gardening gifts delivered right to your door. Houseplants make brilliant presents, so why not choose a couple of really good-looking ones? At this time of year there are plenty, such as the indoor cyclamens and azaleas or a flamboyant poinsettia or a gorgeous Christmas cactus, which look fantastic whilst in flower - but don’t forget that lots of the foliage houseplants look great, too. Make sure that you keep the plants at their best by placing them in a suitable position before you give them away. Outdoor plants are also an ideal choice, but make sure that you know that the plant you are choosing will go to a suitable home. There is no use buying a lime-hating plant such as a Pieris, rhododendron, Camellia or azalea for somebody if they garden on chalk - although a supply of ericaceous compost and a good sized pot could also be a present from someone else if you plan carefully.

A lovingly created pot of winter flowering bedding plants, perhaps under-planted with a few small 20

bulbs such as crocus or miniature daffodils, will make a lovely instant garden impact present for anyone. Despite the huge quantities of Christmas paraphernalia in garden centres now, any half decent centre will still have a good range of winter bedding plants and winter interest plants available. Anyone with an interest in growing vegetables would enjoy one of the many gardening books on the subject, or perhaps a ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher Card, which lets them select the vegetables they’d like to grow from the range I offer at www.pippagreenwood.com. Then, in the spring, we send them garden-ready plants accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails from me.

Most gardeners love to encourage birds into the garden, so how about a bird box or feeder or maybe even some bird food? Bird feeding equipment and supplies take up plenty of space in garden centres,

so you’ll be spoilt for choice.

SameDay

Gardeners love practical things so a good hoe like my favourite, the SpeedHoe, will always be welcome, or how about some Micromesh-covered or polythene-covered EasyTunnels, perfect for protecting crops throughout the growing season next year? A raised bed kit is a great gift idea, too, allowing people to grow vegetables when their own soil isn’t ideal. Some kits have the option to add crop covers made from fine mesh (to keep pests out) or polythene (to protect from the worst of the weather and provide off-season warmth).

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items, including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, pull-out EasyTunnels, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher cards, signed books and lots more besides.

GOLF GTI CLUBSPORT S WHAT IS IT? It’s the fastest front-wheel-drive car around the Nürburgring, a stripped-out hardcore celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI and a limited edition collector’s piece all in one. The Golf GTI Clubsport S is the result of asking engineers to do what they can to cement the GTI’s name in the hot hatch pantheon.

WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? Lifting the Golf ’s bonnet will reveal the same two-litre, turbocharged petrol you’ll find elsewhere in the Golf range – notably the Golf GTI and Golf R. In this application it’s been tuned up slightly, producing 306hp – broadly similar to the Golf R’s output but with a different exhaust system freeing up a couple of horsepower.

That’s paired with the six-speed manual gearbox for weight purposes, as the extra few kilos of the dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) would work against the weight-saving nature of the Clubsport S. WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE? The GTI Clubsport S is a top-specification Golf and it comes with the appropriate bells and whistles. The infotainment system is Volkswagen’s Discover Navigation with a 6.5-inch colour screen - but you can upgrade to the Discover Pro for £1,325, which adds a larger screen and DAB radio. You’re missing 24

By James Baggott

one or two things – not least of which are the rear seats, replaced with a faux strut brace and cargo net. Cruise control is absent, unusually, leading to an oddly sparse suede steering wheel. WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? It drives exactly as you’d expect the car that set the fastest front-wheel-drive lap of the Nürburgring ever to drive. It’s really very savage in a straight line, barking through the exhausts with every upshift, and scrubs off speed no less impressively. The sticky Michelin Pilot Cup tyres offer huge amounts of grip, too.

On the mixed and drying roads we used, the Clubsport S exhibited a little torque steer if you gave the car some stick, but far less than you might expect. Otherwise, it’s a very neutral car to drive on the road.

WHAT DOES THE PRESS THINK? AutoExpress reckons that the Clubsport S has ‘even more involvement and surprising refinement’, while Autocar thinks that it’s ‘by a nose, the very best fast Golf you can buy’. WHAT DO WE THINK? It seems odd to turn a car with such broad credentials into a two-seater sports car, especially as the rear compartment trim is still present, but you can’t really ignore the way it drives.

The Golf R might be a safer bet for all-weather performance, but the Clubsport S makes a great case for itself on dry roads and doesn’t feel as wrung out as other front-wheel-drive offerings of similar power outputs.

Losing the rear seats makes the Clubsport S a bit of a tough sell when silhouette rivals retain the family usability and two-seat competitors are commonly less expensive, but as all of the UK’s allocation of 150 have already been sold, it’s almost a moot point. TARGET BUYERS The performance car enthusiast who loves the Golf but wants a sports car.

It’s been another exciting year at Dovetail Framing, which is celebrating its second birthday. Run by Jonathan Birch from Awbridge, the business has grown from a few local customers in the Romsey area to dozens of clients in an area measuring over ten miles across. Dovetail Framing offers convenience and the ability to make choices with reference to home décor and surroundings. Jonathan visits customers, including professional artists, in their homes, offices or studios, ensuring they choose the perfect presentation. Frames are then hand finished and delivered once completed. Consultations are without obligation, and no extra charge is made for this service. The service has been warmly received, with one customer describing the service as ‘beyond perfect’. Recognition also came in September when Dovetail Framing became a finalist in the Test Valley Business Awards, being highly commended in the ‘Small Business of the Year’ category. Jonathan has also recently been awarded a national scholarship, enabling him to develop specialist skills. Jonathan continues to develop the business, and now provides a weekly framing session on the second floor of Rum’s Eg Gallery in Bell Street in Romsey between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesdays. Customers have access to the usual wide range of samples, and still enjoy free home delivery for completed work. Jonathan remains enthusiastic about the future . “I have enjoyed working with all my customers over the last twelve months and look forward to meeting more in the coming year. Call me on 01794 341274 or visit www.dovetailframing.co.uk and I’ll be delighted to help” 31

Short Story

christmas is crafty By Jackie Brewster “We’re doing Christmas differently this year,” Carol announced, carrying in huge shopping bags. “Roger, stop what you’re doing and give me a hand with this tree.” Jonty wagged his tail. He knew all about Christmas, because it happened once every seven years. Roger would set up a tree in the lounge and then climb the creaky loft ladder for the box of decorations. The pair of them would coo over the little snowmen decorations made from cotton wool and toilet roll tubes, the doily angels, and the crepe paper snowflakes that they would stick to the patio doors. Carol would get nostalgic and ask Roger to pour her a sherry and put on a Slade CD. And Jonty would lie under the coffee table, waiting patiently for a mince pie to fall on the floor. “I’ve been to this stall called Christmas is Crafty,” Carol said, unpacking the contents of her bags. “It’s inspired me.” “I like Christmas just the way it is,” Roger said, but judging from the smells coming 32

from Carol’s shopping Jonty wondered whether Christmas had been vastly improved. “Look at all the adorable new decorations I’ve bought,” Carol said. “Everything is handmade.” “All the stuff before was handmade, by the children,” said Roger. “The kids are all grown up now Roger; it’s time to move on,” Carol said, opening a box of dried clementines which had been studded with cloves and tied with sticks of cinnamon. “These things are handmade but better, you know, professional.” Jonty game them an appreciative sniff. “Honestly Jonty, get your nose out and give me some space,” Carol said. “Look at these Roger, good enough to eat?” Jonty’s ears pricked up. Carol showed them a box of gingerbread men delicately decorated with raisin buttons. Then she unravelled a raffia rope threaded with colourful popcorn, and a dozen huge pine cones sprayed with silver and gold.

“The theme is Rustic Cottage,” Carol said. “You’ve got to have a theme.” “I thought we already had a theme,” Roger said glumly. “Do stop sulking,” Carol said. “You decorate the tree, while I do a spot of stencilling on the patio doors.” Jonty settled into his place beneath the coffee table. Roger hung the new decorations in silence, while Carol sprayed the glass on the patio doors so that it looked like snow had drifted up the panes. Jonty waited for the sherry and Slade but they never came, in fact Carol went up to bed early, leaving Roger to lock up. Though Jonty regretted his lack of mince pie, he reminded himself that Christmas was different this year, so he waited in his basket until he heard sounds of snoring from the

bedroom above. Then he padded into the lounge, a firm plan already in his mind. First he licked the snow off the patio doors. It tasted pleasantly of soap. Next a well-aimed leap from the back of the sofa brought the fir tree down. He then crunched his way through the gingerbread men and the clementines. They smelled better than they tasted. The raffia strings of popcorn proved interesting; he found there was no stopping once he’d begun, and it was necessary to eat the whole chain right to the end. Then he chased the pine cones across the floor. Finally, tired and queasy, he chewed them all up as well, just for fun. Feeling thankful for Carol, he dozed amid the wreckage of this wonderful new type of Christmas. Then he thanked Roger for kindly leaving the lounge door open; something that Roger had never once, in all Jonty’s days, done before.

ADVERTORIAL

Mould, Damp or Salt on the Walls? Almost every homeowner at some time in their lives, experiences damp problems. Mildew, efflorescence (salts on the surface of the wall) and blistering plaster, means it needs treating as soon as possible and the plaster replacing with a “breathable” alternative. BKM Mannesmann UK ltd has a simple but technologically advanced treatment system for rising and penetrative damp. The process protects inside or outside walls of all construction types and materials.

The technology is developed from extensive experience in Germany and is now available in your area. The BKM product microscopically coats all the pores in the material, creating a hydrophobic barrier in all types of brick, stone-work, masonry, cement and lime render. It can be “gravity-fed” or pressure infused into the walls, dependent upon the condition of the wall. BKM also has an external breathable wall protection application, which seals all types of render, salt impregnated brickwork. Lime based paints and render can also be protected under

the 25-year Guarantee. Christian Franceschi, Regional Director for BKM Mannesmann UK ltd, says, “Thanks to this publication, there are many people in Hampshire & Wiltshire who have recently installed our system and are extremely Christian Franceschi, Regional Director satisfied with BKM Mannesmann Uk ltd the results” FOR YOUR FREE survey, contact Christian email: c.franceschi@bkmmannesmann.com or call him on: 01962 940 005 www.bkm-mannesmann.com
