CAMPING IN COMFORT Before the arrival of our children 20 years ago, my husband and I used to have a small boat. Kevin would love to have another (boat that is, not child) but all the preparation and launching only to see the clouds roll in, puts me off. Still, we like the idea of being out for the day or a weekend and going to outdoor music events too, which often finds us in a field some distance from home. So, we pushed the boat out (ha!) and bought a second-hand campervan in January. Aside from the purchase price and the very reasonably priced insurance, I figured that a root around the back of the kitchen cupboard for pots and pans and my spend would be done. Hmm, wrong. The speedo wasn’t working; we knew that when
we bought it. Then it needed a service and a cambelt change, and some welding underneath. And some hoses for drainage from the sink had split. We weren’t planning a ‘proper’ holiday this summer, which is just as well really. Still, once the necessary but boring stuff was out the way, I took myself down to Viscount Caravans in West End (see page 9). I needed a top up of my Calor Gas bottle anyway, but they have a fantastic accessories shop with every gadget you could imagine. I had been browsing on various internet sites before I went but I was delighted to find that Viscount’s prices were consistently lower than those online. Even this early in the season, we’re loving the whole outdoor life. As well as the accessories, Viscount have a fantastic range of caravans and campervans (wish I’d gone there when I bought!) if you fancy making the most of summer 2017.

BMW M760Li xDrive Those of you hoping this was BMW’s M7 need to look away now. Although this may be the fastest BMW ever made, if you’re after a fire-breathing, full-blooded M car, the M760Li will leave you a little disappointed. BMW says that’s because this is a car for buyers with something of a split personality. One moment they may be keen on a country road assault so they can enjoy the glorious V12, the next they might want to kick back and relax in the massaging seats and just cruise along. Looks and image
The 7 Series has long been a luxury choice for the type of buyer who still enjoys driving, though – and the M760Li is the epitome of that. With several driving modes to choose from, sporty drivers are well catered for when its sport setting is active. With the comfort setting it’s mellower, more relaxed, it eases over bumps and floats along beautifully. The looks of the M760Li won’t be for everyone but inside is a wonderful place to spend time. For those who are chauffeured the back seats are arguably more comfortable than up front. There are multimedia screens to enjoy, cushioned headrests and massaging, reclining seat backs. 6
Space and practicality
The 7 Series does feel a little smaller in the rear than rivals from Mercedes and Audi, though. Up front the driving position is a little cosseting too, but it’s easy to get comfortable.
What’s under the bonnet?
BMW made a lot of noise about it being 30 years since they installed a V12 engine in their 7 Series at the launch. Since then, the 12-cylinder lump has doubled in power: the 2017 6.6-litre unit boasts a whopping 601bhp, a staggering 800Nm of torque and is capable of propelling it to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds. That gives it the impressive title of the fastest accelerating BMW ever made, but you’ll pay at the pumps; the M760Li will return 22.1mpg and emits 294g/km.
Behind the wheel
The BMW is a true Jekyll and Hyde car with distinct personalities behind the wheel. On the track it was incredibly swift and that V12 makes a pleasingly sound and, while there may be some body roll, it’s not too intrusive. It’s all helped by four-wheel drive that has a rear wheel drive bias when needed. The steering is a little light in the comfort setting, though, but flick it into sport and it’s far better.
Value for money
For £132,310, you do get some goodies thrown in. Lightweight 20-inch alloys, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Car Play are included, as is an Advanced Parking System, adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display, and massaging seats. There’s even rear-seat entertainment and a panoramic glass sunroof provided too. There’s also an extensive options list, including night vision and BMW laser headlights.
Verdict
The fact BMW perseveres with a V12 is a
ndover

revelation. With downsizing the current
01264 337711 buzzword, it seems hard to believe that a

manufacturer would launch a 6.6-litre petrol drinking lump. Although the market for it will be small, we’re still very glad it has. OK, so this might not be the M7 that many performance BMW fans crave, but it’s as close to it as we’re going to get. It’s great fun to drive, sumptuously luxurious and wonderfully relaxing when you want it to be - and all in, a very competent and exciting 7 Series indeed.

Iconic some local scenes, go on show at the National Trust’s Mottisfont House this later this year.
Invoking a spirit of escape and adventure, posters commissioned by Shell from the 1920s – 1950s featured historic landmarks and inspiring scenes of British countryside, brought vividly to life by artists such as Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland, Rex Whistler and Vanessa Bell. The Shell Heritage Art Collection is one of the most important collections of commercial art in Britain, spanning years of advertising campaigns. Mottisfont’s exhibition focuses on the early twentieth-century period, when Shell’s advertising was driven by ideas of travel and discovery, featuring the slogans ‘See Britain First’ and ‘Visit Britain’s Landmarks’. Exquisite artwork depicting quirky and interesting places encouraged drivers to get on the road and explore the British Isles. Other material commissioned by Shell, including wall charts, film and travel guides, will also be on show. This is a new and unique exhibition, on loan from the Shell Heritage Art Collection based at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu. The exhibition is now running until the 2nd July. 8

UK’s Largest History Festival
26 June to 2 July
The Chalke Valley History Festival has been held annually since 2011 and boasts of being the largest history festival in the UK. It began 2011 on a small scale and has now grown to be a week of talks, discussions, debates, as well as extensive and immersive living history and an historic air display. This year it moves to a new site in Broad Chalke (SP5 5DP). “The aim is to excite, enthral and entertain. An understanding of the past is essential,” says Co-Founder James Heneage. “Without that, it is impossible to make sense of the present or prepare for the future.” All proceeds from the festival have, since 2012, been directed to the Chalke Valley History Trust, which promotes the understanding of history to all ages, but especially children. Since 2013, the festival has also incorporated the History Festival for Schools. cvhf.org.uk. 13
Gardening
outdoor relaxation When you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. So, concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes. Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax? Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’. If you have an arch, arbour, pergola or even a 14
spare bit of fence then train a honeysuckle over it. Its delicately coloured flowers and fabulous perfume will cheer you up and you can even enjoy it in the early evening. A sowing of night-scented stock will produce plants that are perfect for early evening relaxation, as this is when the flowers open and produce wafts of really sweet scent. If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume. Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium which grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke. Artemisia abrotanum has soft grey-green leaves that will make you want to touch it, which
releases a lovely aroma. The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so grow this in a sunny spot with free-draining soil, perhaps to edge a border. It not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell. Grasses and bamboos work well too; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently is one of the most relaxing sounds I know, and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form wonderfully rounded and quite irresistible clumps of foliage. When it comes to choosing flowers, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. Green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so include plenty of
plants with good foliage, and, in shady areas, a miniature grotto-like patch planted up with ferns is wonderful. And finally, before you rush off to the garden centre to buy some of these truly magical ingredients, just a reminder that water in a garden always helps to relax you. Whether it’s a small pond or perhaps a bubble fountain, position it where you can hear that sound of moving water or enjoy watching the wildlife as it comes to feed and drink - and before you know it, you will find that you want to move the whole of your life into your garden.

BEE CREATIVE IN THE GARDEN The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and The Wildlife Trust have joined forces to urge gardeners to do more to help protect bumblebees and solitary bees, heroes of the pollinator world.
Gardeners can download a wild bee-friendly gardening guide. Wildlife events and a ‘Bee Creative’ photo competition will also be taking place from 1 April to 1 November 2017.
The Bee Creative in the Garden! call comes as bees are under increasing pressure largely due to loss of habitat. In the countryside, 97% of lowland meadow has already been lost and the dramatic decrease in suitable habitats isn’t just confined to rural areas.
Helen Bostock from the RHS said: “A healthy garden is buzzing with bees and other pollinators. By providing nesting sites and growing nectar and pollen rich flowers gardeners can and do support a wide variety of bumblebee and solitary bees.”
The network of 15 million gardens that once formed ‘green corridors’ for wildlife are disappearing at an alarming rate. The number of front gardens that have been paved over has tripled in a decade and over five million have no plants growing at all.
Ellie Brodie from The Wildlife Trusts, says: “Anyone can take action to help wild bees whether you have a wall for vertical planting, window box, or back garden. It’s easy to plant a bee haven.” The wild bee-friendly gardening guide, ‘Get your garden buzzing for bees’, is free to download at wildaboutgardensweek.org.uk.

Home Interiors
a home with character There’s more to interior style than eye-catching accessories. Consider introducing an appealing sense of charm and character with these interesting ideas. Is your home lacking in an indefinable something? Has it lost its period features? Would it benefit from some appealing detailing, the restoration of authenticity or some aids to functionality? Sometimes it is worth considering some more architectural alterations, which don’t necessarily have to cost a fortune. Here are a few suggestions. Improve your floors If you have original timber boards in good condition beneath your floor coverings, then sanding them back, staining and/or oiling them is a relatively straightforward procedure for a competent DIYer; alternatively, employ a professional. Boards in poor condition can be renovated to an extent, or consider replacing them with reclaimed boards that match the style of your home. Homes built between the late 19th century and the middle of the 20th often feature colourful, patterned geometric or encaustic tiles, generally along the hallway and garden path. Even if they are discoloured or damaged they should be repairable, and with the right specialist the results will be dramatic. Think about mouldings From skirting to ceiling roses, door surrounds to dados, mouldings contribute enormously to 20

the overall look of a home. Research carefully, to ensure they correspond in scale and design to the age and style of your architecture. Modern replicas are often available, but sometimes going to a specialist is necessary and this is not cheap. Ease of alteration depends on your circumstances but this is definitely a project to bear in mind when considering renovation work. What about woodwork? In living rooms lacking storage, build across the recesses either side of the fireplace, with cupboards below and display shelving above. The same goes for alcove shelving elsewhere, window seats, wardrobes and other forms of built-in joinery. Consider these additions carefully, so that they complement your home in terms of scale and detailing. And, plan to remove and replace completely inappropriate built-in storage or seating when possible.
Replacing poor quality or badly designed interior doors with beautiful ones is a major enhancement. In a period home you might seek out reclaimed examples or find well-made reproductions; also, decide whether to paint them or, conversely, strip them. Panelling can enhance a room or hallway and comes in a wide variety of styles, from Jacobean to contemporary, and is relatively easy to fit.
Get the lighting right You can improve inadequate or imbalanced built in lighting or out of character fittings: either discreetly with minimal downlighters in the ceiling, simple wall lights or versatile LED strips - or go for full-on drama with huge, eye-catching chandeliers. All in the details Small details like cupboard knobs, door and window furniture, light switches, plug sockets and even the humble pull cord can all make a difference. Cheap plastic light switches can be swapped for upmarket ones which are lovely to look at and pleasant to touch. The same goes for door and window furniture: think, for example, how different your front door would look with a gorgeous, matching set of letterbox, bell and numbers. By Katherine Sorrell

Lives, Loves and Stories: Remembering Jane Austen The 18th of July marks the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, yet the stories and characters she created are now more familiar and beloved than ever. Star-filled film and TV adaptions and literary spin-offs abound.
But how many of her novels’ characters and events were from Jane’s life? In his biography, her brother Henry called her character-creating ability “almost unlimited.” But he insisted it was purely creation. “She drew from nature; but, whatever may have been surmised to the contrary, never from individuals.” That may be true, and posthumous censorship of Jane’s letters has removed many potential clues to her influences. Yet some are still discernible.
A Modest Upbringing Jane was born on 16th December 1775 in Steventon in Hants, where her father was a rector. She was the seventh child of eight but had only one sister, Cassandra. While not an orphan herself, she knew the uncertain nature of their lives. Her father and his two sisters had been orphaned and taken in by relatives while her own cousin, Jane Cooper, was orphaned when still young and single.
Jane Cooper lost her mother to typhus in 1783, contracted when her mother and Mrs Austen collected the two Janes and Cassandra Austen, all suffering from typhus, from Southampton. They were being educated there by Mrs Cawley, another relative - yet it was only the 12-year-old Jane Cooper who wrote to the Austens, warning them their daughter Jane was seriously ill. After her mother’s death, Jane Cooper seems to have lived with the Austens for much of the time and was probably there permanently after her father’s death in 1792. It was then that she met and quickly became engaged to Thomas Williams, later Sir Thomas. This was a lucky outcome for an orphaned girl with little fortune. She may have 22
at least partially inspired the orphaned and unfortunate Jane Fairfax in Emma.
Mrs Goddard's ‘real, honest, old-fashioned boarding-school’ in Emma supposedly resembles the Abbey Boarding School in Reading that Jane attended, while Emma’s matchmaking habit may owe something to Mrs Lefroy, Jane’s older friend. She disapproved of her nephew Tom's courtship of Jane and tried to fix her up with the Reverend Samuel Blackall instead. Fortune, Scandal and Tragedy Jane knew all about women like the Bennett sisters in Pride and Prejudice, with no fortune to take to marriage; this was her reality too. She also knew something about scandalous elopement, a plot twist featured in the novel when Lydia Bennett elopes with the immoral Mr Wickham. The Austen’s distant Twistleton relatives had a son who eloped in 1788 with Charlotte Wattell, a fellow amateur actor.
Jane knew of ‘long’ and ‘uncertain’ engagements too, which feature in Persuasion. Due to lack of money, her sister Cassandra had been engaged to Thomas Fowle for around three years when he died serving as a military chaplain in San Domingo. Anne’s flirtations in Persuasion may have been inspired by Jane’s holiday romance in Lyme, although apparently, Jane’s suitor sadly died soon after. However, her only engagement, to Harris Bigg-Withers, was definitely uncertain. It lasted for just one day in December 1802 before she changed her mind. Sadly, whatever her true inspirations may have been, Jane died at just 41 with her novel Sanditon still unfinished, and many more stories still untold.

SERVES 8
RHUBARB and Almond tart
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes plus chilling time
A delicious tart with a layer of tangy roasted rhubarb topped with a sweet almond frangipane. Serve warm or cold with crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream. • Flour, for dusting • 300g ready-made shortcrust pastry • 250g rhubarb, trimmed and chopped • 175g caster sugar • 3 tbsp orange juice • 150g unsalted butter, melted • 125g ground almonds • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 medium eggs, beaten • Icing sugar, for dusting 24
1. Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas Mark 6. Lightly
dust a work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness. Use to line a 23cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, place the rhubarb, 25g of the caster sugar and the orange juice in a shallow roasting tin. Roast in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until just tender, turning once. Leave to cool.
3. Trim off the excess pastry from around the edge of the chilled
pastry case and prick the base all over with a fork. Line the case with baking paper and baking beans and bake blind for 10 minutes. Remove the beans and lining and bake for a further 5 minutes until pale golden.
4. Strain the rhubarb from the roasting juices and spoon into the pastry case. Beat together the melted butter, remaining caster sugar, ground almonds, vanilla extract and eggs in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Gently spread over the rhubarb.
5. Bake the tart for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden and just set. Serve warm or cold dusted with icing sugar. See tip for serving suggestion.

Short Story
isolated showers
By Jackie Brewster
Arlene pushed open the front door, glad to see that the house was still standing for when June returned from her holiday. Aunty June had asked her to pop round and water the broad beans while she was away. Arlene had dutifully given them a good soaking throughout the first week, but then the weather had turned gloriously warm. Thanks to a mixture of barbeques and white wine spritzers, she had completely forgotten about the beans. She prayed, for her sake, that they still had signs of life. June was perversely fond of her beans. Forcing open the back door, even from a distance Arlene could see she was saved. The beans were bushy, bursting with life, and the richest shade of green. Arlene silently thanked Reg from next door. To get a closer look she stepped over June’s outdoor bench press and shrieked. An unpleasant wetness rushed over her flip-flops and up her ankles. The entire garden was sitting under two inches of water. “I wondered when you’d be back.” Reg popped his head over the fence. “It’s had a real soaking, hasn’t it?” Arlene lifted each foot out of the sodden grass and grimaced. “What’s happened?” she asked. “Is it a burst main?” “Don’t you remember?” Reg said cheerfully. “Last week you left the hosepipe on, and it’s still going.” Arlene was suddenly aware of the garden tap fizzing away furiously, while still attached to the hosepipe that snaked its way down the garden. “Why didn’t you come round and turn it off ?” she asked furiously. “I thought she wanted it that way,” Reg said indignantly. “You thought June wanted to turn her back garden 26
into the Everglades?” Arlene asked exasperated. “I don’t know, do I?” Reg said. “I don’t like to interfere in women’s business.” A brown duck splashed across the lawn and pecked at the sodden grass. “That’s just the icing on the cake,” Arlene said. “You know how she hates ducks.” “Can’t stand them,” Reg nodded sagely. “After that one cost her the championship.” “Shoo birdy, shoo,” Arlene said. The duck ignored her. “Is she on a water meter?” Reg asked. “Probably,” Arlene said crossly. “This is on you Reg you should have turned the tap off.” “No chance.” Reg put his hands up. “I don’t get involved.” “What am I going to do?” Arlene whined. “This isn’t going to drain away in time, it’s not like I can pull out a plug.” “The sun will burn it off eventually,” Reg reasoned. “She’ll have the greenest garden on the street and then she’ll be happy.” “But what happens when she gets her water bill?” “Then I’d rather not be in your flip-flops,” Reg said pompously. “If I’m going down, I’m taking you with me.” Arlene gave him a withering look. “I’ll tell her you saw the hosepipe running and did nothing.” Reg went pale. “Can’t we just say we’ve had lots of rain?” he suggested. “Won’t she notice that everywhere else is dry?” “We’ll both say it was isolated showers.” “Agreed.” Just then they heard June’s taxi pulling up in the street outside. Arlene looked at Reg in alarm. “But what about the duck?”

HORRIS HILL SCHOOL Horris Hill School has a unique ethos which provides a rigorous and extensive academic, sporting, musical and artistic foundation. Success is delivered by achieving places and awards at the very best senior schools and by developing boys with impeccable manners, good humour and active brains! In the past academic year, awards to senior schools have included: Outstanding Talent at Harrow, Academic at Winchester, Eton and Radley, Music at St Edward’s Oxford, Sport at Millfield. The majority of 13+ leavers go onto Eton and Winchester, as well as Radley, Sherborne, Marlborough, St Edwards, Millfield amongst others. Recent 2017 successes have included the U13A rugby team winning the IAPS National Small Schools Sevens tournament (a brilliant win against some excellent opponents), the awards to senior schools that the top year have so far earned for Academic, Sport, Music, Drama and Outstanding Talent and the school placing fifth in the National Satips General Knowledge competition; The Senior Chess Team also won the Regional round of the U19 National Schools Chess Championship regional round against Radley College - a fantastic win against much older opponents. The school and its staff believe that the period from 7 - 13 years of age are the most critical in any boys' life. These are the years where the foundations of the men they can become are laid. At such a crucial stage in their cultural development, they believe that an all-boys’ school provides the optimal setting where pupils will exercise their intellectual inquisitiveness, free to explore all avenues, building self-confidence and awareness in a safe and encouraging environment. Plus those youngsters have 90 acres of grounds for sport, activities, den building, bushcraft and for letting off steam! A wide variety of sports and 28
extra-curricular activities is offered, so that every boy has the opportunity to develop interests away from the classroom. The main sports are rugby, football, cricket, hockey and tennis. The school also has its own golf course, train and modelling room, squash court and cross country course. For boys with green fingers, they have their very own kitchen garden, where they also have chickens and pigs! Horris Hill also offer Lamda for budding performers, judo, Mandarin, shooting, climbing and a hugely successful chess club. The relatively small size of the school allows every boy to play a full part in school life, through which he will learn how he can make a difference to his surroundings. Horris Hill promote personal qualities that allows the pupils to get the best from each other and their surroundings and they actively encourage the boys to take responsibility for themselves and each other. It is easy to forget that such a supportive, kind and confident culture is now something of a rarity. There is no doubting that the school has been busy, striving to achieve as much as possible, but each challenge has been met with enthusiasm and Horris Hill boys continue to be gracious no matter what the result.

THE BEAUTY OF A FRAME Place a picture on the wall and its look will take you to a good place or memory, whilst instantly lifting your spirit and soul making you content. Your picture is a sentimental companion, one that you can take anywhere, whether it is a children’s photo or artwork, a fantastic painting, a football shirt or even your lucky pair of shoes. An empty wall is like a blank canvas, no connection or identity, no focal points and no character. But in order for your picture to look its best, the frame should be carefully considered. A frame is a protective, decorative case for your treasured item to be displayed either on a wall or a table. The deco and style of your house may change in time but a picture frame will stand any fashion tendency still suiting the artwork perfectly. Before choosing the best framing option, there are two initial points to consider. Firstly, the frame has to be safe and stand the test of time; if it doesn’t, it will let your artwork - and yourself- down. Secondly, it has to be aesthetically pleasant to the eye of the beholder enhancing the general look of the piece of art. The most crucial aspect of the framing process is the application of the correct techniques. For those who are not familiar with Guild Commended Framer (GCF) standards, it is an accreditation that some professionals achieve after successfully passing a specific exam held by the Fine Art Trade Guild. This certificate assures high professional standards and expertise knowledge in framing at all stages with conservation techniques and museum grade. A qualified Guild Commended Framer is synonym of best practice and quality as they understand how to treat artworks of any age, condition and material helping you to achieve the best combination of rim, mount and glass to suit your pieces of art. At the 1st Floor Gallery Picture Framing they are artists themselves who will take part in the Hampshire Open Studios 2017 welcoming everyone to their exhibition this summer. Being so deeply connected to the art world, they truly understand every single aspect of the overall process from the first sketch to the frame.

I LOVE GIN. And apparently, I’m not the only one... Fetch the ice and tonic – the gin industry in the UK is indeed booming, with 49 distilleries opening in 2016 alone, and £400 million spent on buying gin bottles. The trend for small batch gin is still on the increase this year with new gin lists popping up in restaurants, pubs and bars all over the county, Winchester leading the way of course! But do you know which gin you actually prefer? And why? The Hampshire Wine School offers an education, in a fun and relaxed way at the Winchester Wessex Hotel, on how gin is created, and how to make THE perfect Gin & Tonic by comparing 5 styles of gin, 3 premium tonics and 5 types of botanicals. A real mouth-watering and eyeopening experience for £32.50pp. Do not miss out on Winchester’s forthcoming House of Gin Festival either, which is returning to Winchester GuildHall on Saturday 27th May, 5pm-10pm, in association with Winchester Distillery and East Imperial tonic and mixers. The Festival will have three Gin bars showcasing a wide selection of small batch and Award Winning Gins. Producers shall also run masterclasses on how their gin is distilled, offer tastings and an opportunity to purchase bottles at a discounted rate. Nginiuos Gin, Brennen & Brown Gin, 6 o’clock Gin, Burleighs Gin and Elephant Gin to name a few will be presented on the day. Tickets on sale for £8.03 at EventBrite.co.uk. My favourite gin of the moment is Pinkster Gin, as it makes a refreshingly different G&T, with a delicate raspberry flavour appealing both to seasoned gin drinkers and recent converts. It even won ‘Overall Best Contemporary Gin’ at The Gin Guide Awards 2017! So, how about this wonderful ‘Je T’Aime’ pink cocktail for the one you love. … • 37.5ml Pinkster Gin
