EXPLORE THE WONDERS OF SCIENCE Winchester Science Festival will open its doors on 28th to 30th of July, to show off the best of Hampshire and World science with talks from internationally renowned scientists such as Prof. Lucy Green, Dr Sadie Jones (Univ of Southampton), Prof. Clare Grey (Univ. of Cambridge), Carrie Anne Philbin of RaspberryPi.
The youngest speaker, eighteen year old Amy Mather, will talk about how you can use science, technology, engineering and maths fused with creativity to make your future. Amy was honoured with the European Commission’s first European Digital Girl of the Year Award at the age of 13. The festival, which starts at 10am and is organised by the Winchester Science Foundation. There will be the chance to hear about the latest findings from the deepest reaches of space to the most recent developments in prosthetics. From children to grandparents, there will be fun activities that everyone can take part in.
William Vine, Festival Director, said: “Hampshire is one of the UK’s leading counties for scientific research and science industry, and we hope to see lots of Hampshire residents at the Discovery Centre. It’s a perfect chance to learn about the research taking place in Hampshire and the South East.” In addition to talks throughout the three days, there will be a range of hands-on activities and exhibitions in and around the Winchester Discovery Centre. The Winchester Science Centre team will be on hand with experiments and activities along with Southampton University Science Roadshow, Mini Professors and TechAgeKids More information at www.winchesterscifest.org.
Blissfields IT’S GOING TO
6-8 July, Winchester
Several of the Discover team went to this one last year and loved it. Blissfields has become a little gem on the festival circuit and whilst it’s never going to be a Reading, Glastonbury or Isle of Wight sized event, it has pulled loads of established names in the past such as Bastille and Mumford and Sons. An illicit journey to the Hidden Hedge at night – a party in its own right - is a must to sample the bohemian delights of fire dancers, acrobats and trapeze artists. A wonderful festival experience on a smaller scale. Headliners are not the famous chart-toppers (and the reasonable ticket prices reflect this) but be assured there are some outstanding acts to see. BE A HOT ONE The Cheese & Chilli Festival are bringing their fantastic food fayre to Winchester on the 19th and 20th August. Clearly the event title gives away the theme: expect both in abundance from over 70 trade stands. Plenty more on show though with a stunt team, falconry, a range of beers and plenty of other activities for the children. And – if you think you are tough enough – you could take part in a chilli eating competition! The festival will be situated at North Walls, SO23 8DJ and is open each day from 10am to 5pm. www.cheeseandchillifestival.com

Editor’s Letter
are you talking to me? I’m sure I mentioned in a previous editor’s letter that I broke my arm 18 months ago. It never fixed itself properly so I have recently had an operation which means I am in a sling for the next four weeks. Typing with one hand is frustratingly slow, so I purchased some professional voice recognition software. In many ways I have been very impressed. It quickly learns words like Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford, but there are some errors which are infuriating. For example how often do you use ‘their’? Rarely, but that’s the word which always seems to appear instead of ‘there’.
As we all do when something annoys us, I found myself shouting at the screen. The microphone was still on and it was funny seeing my anger appear as a sentence in an email! Mind you, even that was wrong, spelling out “you stupid lovely software”. It looks like we are stuck with keyboards for some time to come. I always enjoy putting together our summer editions, as there are so many interesting events to go to. It doesn’t always have to cost a fortune. We have two really useful features this month, one on free or low cost days out, and one on things to do on the water. Together with a highlights of bigger events and the usual what’s on listing, it’ll be a great summer! Thank you.

Gardening
SAFE JOURNEY Now that the weather is really summery, everyone is rushing to their local garden centres, garden shows and nurseries to stock up on new plants for the garden. However, don’t forget to ensure that the plants you buy have a good chance of surviving, not only once they get home, but also during the journey there; it is worth taking a few very sensible precautions. Don’t take something home the day you buy it if it is too large to fit in your car. However slowly you drive, if the plant is sticking out of a sunroof or window the foliage is going to be scorched and damaged, and it is possible that a stem may be broken. Almost all garden centres now offer delivery and this is usually free of charge within a reasonable radius, so take advantage of this service. If the plant does fit in your car then remember to wrap the root ball in a black bin liner or a box, to prevent the back of your car becoming full of compost, grit etc.
Always use the garden centre as the last port of call before travelling home, as in hot weather temperatures increase quickly in a closed car, even with the windows or sunroof open. Under these conditions the plants can soon be boiled alive, literally! Plants in the boot should be safer for a slightly longer period of time, but you should travel straight home once you have made your purchases. If you are determined to take something home that protrudes slightly from your car, then it is essential that you wrap up anything which is sticking out really well to prevent leaf scorch and damage. Make sure that it is tied down extremely well so that it can’t blow off on the way home. Remember 12
that anything protruding from your car could potentially cause a driving hazard to other road users, so be sensible. Even on a short journey home, plants which are exposed to exaggerated heat inside a car or the scorching effect of sunlight travelling through the car glazing can be seriously damaged, so cover them up with something to decrease the risk. It is worth taking a few old newspapers with you when you go to the garden centre, as these make perfect temporary tents. Remember that most plants prefer fairly constant conditions, so try not to put them through too many changes in a short space of time. Ideally, take them from one area in the garden centre to somewhere similar in your garden, and keep any travelling during hot weather to a minimum. If they look at all damaged from their journey then give them a week or two to recuperate in dappled shade in a protected position in your garden.
And don’t forget that when you plant anything new in your garden, if the weather is at all dry it is worth waiting until the evening or at least late afternoon before planting. Make sure that everything is kept well watered, as this will increase the chances of the plants establishing without too By Pippa Greenwood much distress. Pairing Asian food and wine can be tricky. But it needn’t be ... It’s about understanding elements in wine such as acidity, tannin, body and intensity of flavours, and elements in food such as bitterness, saltiness and sweetness. Furthermore, there are many problem elements linked to Asian food, such as chilli, sour agents (eg: tamarind, green mango), umami (eg: soy sauce), dark spices (eg: cardamom, cinnamon, star anise, cumin, turmeric). My pairing workshop will give you all the tools you will ever need to mix and match and spend the most enjoyable of nights in with a take-away or out at a restaurant.
But where do I go to put my theories into practice? Manow of course! Manow (meaning ‘lime’ in Thai and situated at 72-74 St George’s Street in Winchester) is a family-run Thai restaurant specialising in cuisine from the Far East. Shah, being the most welcoming of owners, boasts a mouth-watering menu and extensive drinks list. Start your culinary journey with a G&T (the Black Tomato Gin served with fresh basil, black pepper and Burma East Imperial Tonic is my favourite and a lovely twist on a Bloody Mary!). As far as food is concerned, here are a few pairings I would like you to try there or at home: • Chicken Satay £6.95: Grilled chicken served with a Satay peanut sauce and cucumber relish, with a Gewurztraminer wine from Alsace • Lime and Chilli Steamed Sea Bass £15.50: Sea

bass with garlic, coriander in chilli and lime sauce, with a Sauvignon Blanc wine from the Loire Valley
• Ginger Stir Fry Chicken £9.25 Beef £10.25 Duck £11.50 King Prawn £10.50: Sautéed fresh ginger, black fungus mushrooms with chilli, with a chilled Beaujolais wine • Beef in Oyster Sauce £11.50: Beef with vegetables and spring onions in oyster sauce, with an oaked Chardonnay or a young Cabernet Sauvignon if you prefer a red wine. • Cashew Nut Chicken £10.50 Duck £12.95: Stir-fried with cashew nuts, onions and peppers with fiery dry chili, with an off-dry Chenin Blanc or a sweet wine such as a late harvest Muscat to help cool your taste buds down! Finish the whole experience with Shah’s speciality: his pink Gin & Tonic lemon sorbet dessert … from the photo, you can see that I’m about to die and go to Heaven! Your turn to have fun with food and wine. Enjoy!

There are many attractions in the area which will come to mind when planning what to do during the summer. However some need a little more thought, especially if you are watching your budget. All these are low cost or free days out. Imagine you are a millionaire: Northington Grange is the foremost example of the Greek Revival style in England, built between 1804 and 1809. It is free, and a great place for imagining yourself as Lord or Lady of the Manor. This is a lovely picnic spot too. www.englishheritage.co.uk and search for Northington. Imagine you are an art critic: The grounds of Hillier Gardens (near Romsey) make an interesting walk at any time of the year, but in the summer they have an annual exhibition of Art in the Garden. www.hilliergardens.org.uk Imagine you are a child: With a signal box and station and a dual track running through tunnels, over and under bridges, round curves and changing gradients the miniature railway provides a fun ride for children and adults. Imagine you are a wildlife expert: Enjoy a date with nature at the Reptile Centre, with fun activities for the whole family. Quiz trail and ‘making’ activities for children. Come and see 26
the ‘live’ video of birds on their nests as well as the reptiles and amphibians. For more information 0300 067 4601. There is no charge for this event. Just turn up between 10.30am and 4pm. New Forest Reptile Centre, SO43 7GR Wed 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Aug. www.forestry.gov.uk and search for the centre For more nature trails look no further than the Wildlife and Butterfly Walk at Southampton Common. Learn about all the species of butterflies and moths that are in the UK. The walks start just inside the main gates at the end of Cemetery Road where parking is available. The walks and events are all free but any donations would be much appreciated. Bookings - 07538 888 655. Imagine you are on holiday: The land in the New Forest is quite unlike anywhere else in the county and once you are in there it feels like you are on holiday. You can take a long walk or to see more take bikes with you. Take a picnic and drinking water. Imagine you are a golf professional: If you’ve never played the game and wouldn’t dream of going onto a main course you can still have the chance to swing a club. Go down to the mini golf at Andrews East Park, Southampton, it is around £2.50 per person and it is an 18 hole course. For more information call 02380 833000.

A world without wires The best way to get wireless Wi-Fi at home or on the go If you go out and about this year, you’re in for a happy surprise: You don’t need to be travelling far from home to get free Wi-Fi. Many UK and Irish towns and cities have free Wi-Fi schemes and most casual eating and coffee chains usually offer some form of free internet access. Just watch what you’re signing up for: such public-spirited provision is often there in order to capture valuable marketing data, so keep a close eye on any tick-boxes you’re expected to complete. It’s also a good idea to use a virtual private networking (VPN) service such as Tunnelbear (www.tunnelbear.com) or Windscribe (www.windscribe.com) to keep your connection private if you intend to use public Wi-Fi services. You never know who’s looking in.

If you’re staying at home and just want to get better reception around the house or in the garden, there are several ways to make your Wi-Fi work harder. The first, cheapest and simplest
2
thing to do to improve your Wi-Fi connection is to move the router: ideally it should be higher than your furniture and obstacles such as radiators, which are hard for the radio waves to pass through. If your wireless router is getting on a bit it’s probably stuck with older, slow Wi-Fi technology, so if you can stretch to an 802.11ac wireless router you’ll notice a huge difference in speed and range - provided of course your laptop, tablet or smartphone has the same Wi-Fi support. If the speed is fine but the signal just doesn’t go far enough, a Wi-Fi extender may be just the trick: it connects to the network and throws the signal further, so for example you might extend your home Wi-Fi network to the garden or patio. It isn’t expensive or difficult, either: good Wi-Fi extenders are available for less than £40 and take seconds to set up. 1. Netgear Nighthawk 802.11ac router. 2. Wi-Fi dongle to upgrade PC’s wireless. 3. D-Link Wi-Fi extender.

Caring for older people in the heat of summer
We all like to make the most of the sunshine in the summer, whether that’s by going for walks, picnics in the park or sitting in the garden with a glass of Pimms. At care homes such as The Fernes in Fareham and Challoner House in Eastleigh, the story is the same, with residents and their guests keen to spend as much time as possible out on the terrace or in the garden. Staff at these homes have seen first-hand the benefits of spending time outside for older people but also know the importance of supporting individuals to keep cool while they enjoy the sunshine and fresh air or take part in outdoor activities. Catherine Bezer, General Manager at The Fernes Care Home in Fareham, said: “Whether in a care home or elsewhere, it’s vital that older people take care in extremely hot temperatures and cover up well when spending time outside.

“It’s essential to keep hydrated with plenty of water or diluted fruit juice and buying a stash of ice lollies to store in the freezer is a good idea too.” Allison Sweetman, General Manager at Challoner House in Eastleigh said: “A good tip for the summertime is to avoid strenuous activities and limit things like housework and gardening to when it’s cool, like early morning or evenings. “At Challoner House, residents love to spend time relaxing in the sunshine with a cool drink and there are some very keen gardeners who help keep everything looking great. As long as you take the right precautions, there is no better way to relax!” You can read more about Challoner House and The Fernes at www.barchester.com or why not pay them a visit to take a look at their beautiful outdoor spaces and enjoy a cool drink and a chat with friendly staff.

health & exercise Everyone has read articles or watched programmes on their Tv about the benefits of exercise and a healthy balanced diet. Exercise can take many forms, it’s not all red-faced sweaty people pumping iron or pounding the treadmill down the gym. There are many different things you can do to help keep you and your heart in good shape, and it needn’t hit you hard in the pocket. The secret to a lasting exercise regime is to first find something you like doing, you are far more likely to stick to if you enjoy it, it’s all too easy to go full steam ahead with an exercise programme that you don’t really like and that will increase the chances of you giving up. Of course, the exercise needs to be backed up with a sensible diet, nobody is saying only eat vegetables and salads all the time, but a good rule of thumb is ‘everything in moderation’. By all means, have treats and takeaways, just remember in between those naughty moments try to eat a balanced diet consisting of the five food groups. For more information about nutrition and exercise consult your doctor who will be able to advise you more.

Funds for Computer Café A new computer café has opened in Kings Somborne to help residents who wish to learn more about using computers, laptops and tablets.
With the support of a Councillor Community Grant from Test Valley Borough Council, a group of five volunteers have helped 22 people to use technology during the scheme’s first two months. Participants have benefited from personalised support on topics such as online shopping, creating documents and using email.
Councillor Tony Ward, said: “It’s great to see so many residents making use of the new facility.”
Residents are invited to bring their own devices or make use of the small number of laptops available at the sessions. People wishing to volunteer to help at the sessions are also invited to attend if they have basic IT knowledge. 35

PADDLEBOARDING IN A PICANTO To prove just how practical its new city car can be, Kia challenged James Baggott to tackle the Italian coast on a paddleboard. It’s all too easy to pigeonhole cars like the Kia Picanto as city centre shopping carts, fit for nothing more than a quick trip to the supermarket. While it might be true that the Korean car firm’s baby has traditionally been bought by grandparents and students, it’s an image the brand is desperately hoping it can shed. This is the third generation of Kia’s second bestselling UK car and with it comes more aggressive looks, a sharper driving style and clever technology aimed at helping it appeal to a far broader spectrum of buyers.
That’s why I find myself on a paddle-boarding adventure in Italy: to prove the new Picanto’s versatility, Kia has invited us to the Toscana coastline, crammed two blow-up paddleboards, wet suits and a picnic in the back of one of their latest city cars and pointed us towards the coast. Costing from just £9,450, the Picanto now boasts more passenger and luggage space but with no overall increase in size over the previous model. Inside there’s a 25 per cent increase in luggage space, topping 255 litres with the rear seats up and 1,010 litres with them down. That extra carrying capacity certainly comes in
40
handy. The two giant paddleboards, overnight bags for two and accessories are easily swallowed in the boot, with space left over.
There’s a choice of engines in the new model. Our test vehicle – in ‘2’ specification – features the 1.0 litre 66bhp unit. But there’s also a 1.25 litre 83bhp option and a 1.0 litre turbocharged option. Even the lowest output unit gets the city car to 60mph in 13.8 seconds and gives a top speed of 100mph, while sipping fuel at a miserly 64.2mpg rate on the combined cycle. Crossing the rich, lush green vine-covered Italian countryside near Grosseto as we attempt to find the beach, the Picanto’s light steering and peppy engine impresses, as does its ability to soak up potholes you’d fear would otherwise swallow it. As we approach the beach, the asphalt crumbles away and the Picanto skips between giant holes littering the sand-covered track to the water. After an hour’s paddleboarding followed by some impromptu surfing, there’s time to play with the kit while drying off in the supportive front seats of the Kia. It’s functional not flashy inside, and despite the smaller screen for the multimedia system on this mid-range ‘2’, it still works well with your phone, streaming Spotify perfectly. There’s air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, heated door mirrors and a leather trimmed steering wheel; that’s on top of the standard options, which include remote central locking, USB and AUX ports, electronic stability control and automatic emergency braking.
Kia has certainly moved its Picanto on in leaps and bounds from its predecessor. On the road it’s sharper to drive, quieter and more sporty than
Andov
ever before. Its new technology – which on higher specification models even includes Apple CarPlay The Repair Specialists and Android Auto – is impressive, while it’s a comfortable car to spend time Andover in. What’s more, it’s always satisfying to know that even though it’s a car unlikely to shed that blue rinse stereotype, if you are a more adventurous owner it can cope admirably with all the kit you’ll need to By James Baggott escape city life.
