Reach Croatia with greater ease than ever

f you are coming to Croatia by car from an EU country, you can now forget about the traffic jams and long waits at the borders that were a common sight upon entering Croatia, especially in the summer months. They are now a thing of the past since Croatia entered Schengen at the beginning of the year and so eliminated its land borders with its European neighbors, Hungary and Slovenia, as well as its marine border with Italy, and Schengen has also opened up borders in airports. We hope it will motivate you to visit Croatian destinations even more often. What would you say to a weekend getaway to Istria or Kvarner, for example, or Zagorje or Slavonia? As of January 1, 2023, Croatia also entered the Eurozone. So the euro became the official currency in Croatia, which will make things much easier for many of you who visit Croatia from other countries of the Eurozone. Upon arriving, you won't have to look for exchange offices and pay conversion fees, and it will also be easier to compare the prices of products and services. Using the same currency makes it easier to travel, but also to spend, doesn't it? By finally connecting the south of Croatia with the rest of the country by road, as of 2022, the Pelješac Bridge has also made the trip easy for those traveling to the heavenly destinations in the far south of Croatia. There are plenty of novelties for an even greater travel experience.

Upon entering the Schengen Zone and introducing the euro as its official currency, this year Croatia awaits you with two novelties.

On the hunt for experiences T

ravel has finally come back, in the best possible way and style. Everyone is traveling everywhere. We travel on our own and in groups, and travel agencies are offering a selection of trips more abundant than ever before. All methods of transportation are being used to travel - cars, motorcycles, buses, trains, and planes, and this year cruise ships have also made it back to sea more than last year. We are taking the time to carefully choose our destinations and research them before we go (for which virtual platforms are of great assistance), we choose to reserve early and prefer to stay at sustainable, green destinations. We would rather choose accommodations in the peace and quiet of rural areas that are near popular travel destinations and try to avoid mass crowds (if possible). While traveling, we are more responsible, spend more, wind down in the benefits wellness centers have to offer, but are also relatively active, and are constantly on the lookout for new experiences. We appreciate culture but prefer destinations that also offer many options for an active holiday in untouched nature. While traveling, we seek all that is local and authentic, and are delighted to taste local food

and wine, and just like in previous years, nautical tourism has remained an absolute hit - we love to tighten the sails and sail through a heavenly archipelago. We have carefully put together the topics of the 30th issue of tipTravel magazine to match the trends that are leaving a significant mark on tourism in 2023. After the celebratory tenth anniversary of the publication of the magazine, we still believe that quality and success should be continuously confirmed, while also adapting to new trends and challenges the future holds. With the wind in our sails, we sail on to continue creating new, inspirational travel stories and bringing great recommendations for your next trips with new articles added to the issue all year long. We have wonderful months of travel ahead with long days and short nights - spend them in the best possible way, resting and traveling with your favorite people in destinations that will awaken all of your senses, fulfill your expectations, and where you will find not only experiences to remember, but also yourself. Keep on reading to find inspiration... Željka and Robert Kunštek

he region from Dubrovnik, the Dubrovnik Riviera, and the Neretva Valley all the way to the Pelješac Peninsula and the islands of Korčula, Mljet, and Lastovo is a true travel and nautical paradise. Those who have sailed to some parts or the entire area at least once know that the coast of the Croatian south, with its many islands and islets, is breathtaking and that it hides secret heavenly bays that you can have all to yourself. The sailors who have discovered that information often guard it as a bestkept secret. Besides fulfilling their nautical dreams in that rugged archipelago, while there they also love to discover the unique, diverse enogastronomy in the places they drop anchor. Are you also ready for such an adventure?

Dubrovnik, Cavtat, Slano, or Ploče? If you would like to be certain that you will get a bay all to yourself, go sailing during the preseason or post-season, or in late spring or early autumn. Not only will the crowds be smaller then, but the prices are also lower, the temperatures are more pleasant than in the hot summer months, and the sun, pleasant, warm sea, and good wind are guaranteed. If you head south, count on a calm, safe trip even if the weather isn't perfect since the archipelago is abundant in islands and islets with many bays sheltered from the wind, and safe anchorages, along with high-quality, well-equipped marinas. Sailing through the Croatian south also guarantees priceless views of natural beauty, majestic »

Along with the clean, warm seas, and natural beauty, the good winds are part of the reason sailors love the Adriatic. The mistral, which brings a light breeze on warm days is a favorite as it is perfect for sailing. lighthouses, and cultural attractions. Just imagine sailing beneath the impressive walls of Dubrovnik, world-class gems! Dubrovnik can be your starting point for your nautical adventure of the Croatian south, or, which is more popular among sailors, start off in Cavtat, a cute town where the megayachts of the world's jet set often drop anchor. You can also head out from Slano Bay, a travel destination in the Dubrovnik Riveria, which has a modern marina sheltered from all winds, or from Ploče, a town located near the Neretva River, its delta, and fertile valleys that are often called the Croatian California. Before you head out on a nautical adventure, spend some time in that valley, and sail through its gastronomic waters. The main stars of the spread in the Neretva Valley are eels and frogs. Although you can taste them in various ways, the most popular way of preparing them is in a brodetto. The menus in the Neretva Valley also include wetland birds (such as the Eurasian coot), along with other fish specialties, crabs, dishes prepared under the bell... Everything pairs beautifully with local Neretva wine.

tipTravelMagazine June 2023 - May 2024

If you sail out from Dubrovnik or Slano, start off by sailing to the Elaphiti islands. The archipelago of eight islands, five islets, and many reefs and rocks, immersed in the sea that is all shades of blue, is a true magnet for sailors. The three largest, and only inhabited islands of the archipelago, are Šipan, Lopud, and Koločep. Their main harbors are on the northwestern side of the islands, and they share the fact that their lush greenery hides many churches, monasteries, and summer estates of Dubrovnik's former elite. Steer your bow towards Pelješac, the peninsula of wine, oysters, surfers, world-class cultural attractions, and heavenly beaches and bays you will want to anchor in for a longer time. As a destination, Pelješac is still under the radar and always slightly off the welltravelled nautical routes, which is part of its additional charm. Lovište and Ston are known as the best-protected anchorages, but the eastern and southern coasts of the secondlargest Croatian peninsula are home to several smaller harbors. Before you head out to explore them, dock at the Ston marina and explore Ston, a small town with great cultural attractions. The remarkable Ston Wall and Ston Saltworks will impress you with their stories. The natural salt from the saltworks enhances many dishes in Ston's tavern and restaurants, and the queen of the table in Ston is - the oyster. And it's not just any oyster, but the one that the pickiest gourmets of the world have named the best in the world. The chefs there have an endless source of inspiration for its preparation, while shellfish harvesters say that oysters are tastiest when they are freshly picked from the sea, raw, and drizzled with just a few drops of lemon. They pair nicely with a glass of sparkling white wine from Pelješac. In Ston, you can also eat delicious mussels and, just like on all of Pelješac, various fish and seafood dishes enriched with a drizzle of precious extra virgin olive oil. The elaborate gastronomic story, in the sign of the sea, is also paired with an impressive enological selection that has made the peninsula famous worldwide. Since the beginning of time, the sunny slopes of Pelješac have been covered with vineyards (which you will sail by), mostly of the Plavac Mali sort. It covers a total of 90 percent of Pelješac's vineyards so red wines are the peninsula's trademark, and they pair best »

an island with many natural anchorages, and when you get hungry, enjoy the delicious seafood in one of the taverns or restaurants in Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ. Šipan is a well-known destination for gourmets in that part of the Adriatic. Lopud will delight you with sandy, white beaches and bays, of which Šunj is apparently the most beautiful. Sandy beaches are also a trademark of Koločep, an island that was once known as the home of the most famous coral diver in the Mediterranean. If you are an experienced diver, head out to the depths around Koločep and try to have a look at the beautiful coral gardens.

with blue fish, meat dishes, and hard cheeses. White grape sorts are more scarce but still superb - Maraština (Rukatac), Pošip, Grk, Malvasia Dubrovačka, Chardonnay. You will also eat well in Kobaš, a fishing settlement in the southwestern part of the peninsula, which is gladly visited by sailors and gourmets due to its great restaurants, each of which has a mooring. While in your nautical adventure around Pelješac don't miss out on Žuljana Bay, on the southern side of the island, as well as nearby Trstenik Bay, where you can also dock and drop anchor. Make sure to tie off in the marina in Orebić, a town of sailors and captains, and climb up to St. Ilija (961 m), the highest peak of Pelješac that offers one of the most beautiful views of the Mediterranean - the mountains and islands of central and southern Dalmatia. Sail through the Pelješac Channel and see why it is loved by sailors and surfers. The wind generally gets stronger there in the afternoon hours and will fill the sails as you glide down the channel. Viganj and Kučište, in the narrowest part of the windy Pelješac Channel, are the top destinations for all those who want to catch the best mistral wind in the Adriatic. Those places are also hosts of many sailing regattas and surfing championships.

In Korčula's bays On the other side of the Pelješac Channel is another attractive nautical and enogastronomical story that is a place to which all those who have visited it always return over and over. Korčula. It is unique in many ways. Find a mooring in the ACI marina in Korčula, near the old center of the city of Korčula, on the northeastern side of the island. Disembark the boat because to truly experience the island, you have to spend some time in Korčula, home to the famous traveler Marco Polo. Explore the old city center on the peninsula, surrounded by centuries-old stone walls and towers. Duck into the picturesque stone streets that are full of the aromas of various delicacies wafting from the city's restaurants - from Korčula pašticada and octopus cooked in its own juices to various fish and meat dishes, often accompanied by Žrnovski makaruni (local pasta) and enriched with superb, local olive oil. It will be hard to resist. In contrast to Pelješac, the wine story of Korčula is full of superb white wines made with indigenous sorts of grapes - Pošip, Rukatac, and Grk, while the red sort grown is Plavac Mali. Korčula is not only a nautical destination, but also a favorite gourmet destination »

among sailors. There are many fantastic restaurants in the city, amongst which is one with a prestigious Michelin star. Head back to the boat, gather your thoughts, tighten the sails, and head to one of the nearby bays and islands that offer not only untouched nature but also a safe harbor. The Kneže, Račišće, Vaja, and Samograd bays are on the radar of sailors, along with Pupnatska Luka, on the south coast, which is known as the most beautiful bay on the island. Other beautiful bays with turquoise shades of the sea on the same side of the island are the somewhat narrower bays of Žitna and Bačva. You can also look for a mooring at the harbor in Lumbarda, in a bay protected from all winds. Take a walk next to Grk vineyards to at least one of the two most famous beaches on that side of the island - Pržina and Bilin žal. Sail off to the islet of Badija with its Franciscan monastery and beach where deer walk freely, or to Vrnik, where there is a rock quarry from Roman Times. True hedonism awaits you on the islet of Vela Stupa, two nautical miles south of the city of Korčula. Along with a safe mooring, crystal clear sea, and pebble beach, there is also a restaurant there that offers fantastic gastronomical experiences. Continue sailing on to the other side of the island. Brna, a safe harbor on the south side of the island offer mooring possibilities, and Karbuni Bay is also protected from winds, and nearby there are also islets with hidden coves. On the same, south side of the island is attractive Prižba, where you can stop for some food in one of the restaurants before sailing on to the nearby islets. Keep on sailing towards the western side of the island where you will find Vela Luka in a deep, protected bay. Find a mooring in the new marina, delicious island specialties in one of the restaurants, and a trip to times past in Vela Spila. You can also drop anchor in the »

After sunrise the following morning head towards Mljet, Odyssey's island. It is the greenest Adriatic island, full of emerald bays, and the place where you can forget about mass tourism and hustle and bustle. Mljet has managed to retain its mystery and incredible beauty and is visited by those who want to relax in true natural beauty. There are no marinas on the island, but there are a dozen anchorages and moorings, while the island docks are mostly owned by the family-run restaurants there. The aroma of Mljet's delicacies wafts through the air most in Pomena, the place most visited by tourists on the northwestern part of the island. Pomena is a favorite amongst sailors for its safe harbor protected from all winds. You can tie up your boat on the mooring on the boardwalk in front of the only hotel on the island. Pomena is also a favorite destination due to its fantastic restaurants. Mljet makaruli (homemade pasta) with goat cheese, octopus, and potatoes roasted under the bell, and freshly caught fish with the must-have addition of olive oil are dishes that will win over your taste buds. oldest sea park in Croatia - Mljet National Park. A favorite destination for sailors on Mljet is the deep Polače Bay, surrounded by four islets. Sailboats, but also mega yachts, like to drop anchor there, and there are several excellent restaurants, ruins of Roman summer homes, Illyrian ruins, and medieval churches. The large bay in front of the town of Sobra, once the main harbor on the island, isn't especially popular among sailors due to its exposure to winds, but it is good to know that it is home to the only ferry dock on the island, along with the only gas station. In contrast to Sobra, sailors often drop by Prožurska Luka, while they adore Okuklje Bay, which is sheltered from all winds. There is also a great restaurant in the bay, which is a reason more to visit. The turquoise Podškolj Bay is attractive and hidden away, but isn't protected from winds. There is a restaurant in the bay with Mljet specialties. Enhance the experience and visit one of the sandy beaches on the island Limuni and Saplunara are the most popular.

It won't be easy to leave Mljet's bays, but it is worth turning the boat towards the island of Lastovo, another nautical delight. On the way, you will pass by Glavat, the easternmost islet of the Lastovo archipelago that is home to an old stone lighthouse, along with a lighthouse keeper, who takes care of the light that dominates the entire archipelago. You will also pass by the Vrhovnjaci islets, as well as the Lastovnjaci. They are all part of the Lastovo Islands Nature Park, which includes 46 islands, islets, reefs, and rocks that have resisted time, stress, and hustle and bustle, and attract selective sailors to the peace and true beauty of its many bays. Bravely sail through the Lastovo archipelago, and duck into the crystal clear bays occupied by the mega yachts of the jet set, Hollywood elite, aristocrats and royal families in the summer. The largest island in the archipelago is Lastovo, with bays that are a favorite among sailors. Jurjeva Luka is known to be the safest and the calmest, but you can also find a safe harbor in Malo Lago Bay on the north side of the island. On the same side is the popular Zaklopatica with fantastic restaurants that also offer free mooring for guests. Skrivena Luka (Portorosso) Bay on the south side of the island is also naturally protected, and at the entrance is Pt. Struga with a magnificent 19thcentury lighthouse of the same name. Lastovo is the southernmost inhabited island in Croatia (it has less than 800 inhabitants), and with 2700 hours of sun per year, it is one of the sunniest islands in the Adriatic.

has water and electrical connections. At the restaurant, you can taste traditional dishes prepared in the traditional way. Fish that is grilled or prepared under the bell, brodetto, or island lamb? You can't go wrong, whatever you choose. A safe mooring can also be found in Pasadur, a town located at the place where two beautiful bays (Velo and Malo Lago) meet. The marina there has 30 moorings, with connections for electricity and water, and is also home to the only hotel on the island. After an exciting day at sea, lounge on the deck and look up to the sky. The starriest sky you can possibly imagine will be right above you, and you will be able to see the Milky Way without a telescope. Yes, Lastovo has one of the darkest skies in Europe and rightfully bears the title of the "Island of Crystal Stars". Lastovo is also the island of fumar (unusually decorated chimneys), many churches, an abundant underwater world, but also hidden military tunnels and buildings since the army ran the island for years. Tourists and sailors love the tour that reveals secrets and interesting facts about the military history of the island. Lastovo is also an island of fantastic food. You can be sure that on that island out at sea, far away from the mainland, you will truly eat organic, local fruits and vegetables homegrown in a pure environment, and freshly-caught Adriatic fish. Try the grilled sardine and chickpeas with salted sardines, conger eel brodetto, and lamb, goat, and chicken roasted under the bell. Homemade olive oil and wine, of which Maraština and Plavac Mali are the most popular, will round off the gastro experience. Sailing through the Croatian south, which is rich in nautical assets, will definitely delight you with its colors, aromas, flavors... We wish you smooth sailing, and, of course, calm seas. 

Active vacation and enogastronomy

t's no secret that the island of Korčula is loved by those who like to spend their vacations actively, in a heavenly landscape in untouched nature, while discovering enticing local flavors. Many trails meander along the island from the city of Korčula and Lumbarda all the way to Smokvica, Blato, and Vela Luka, passing through olive groves, vineyards, and pine forests, alongside the sea, churches, towers, dry stone walls, and archeological sites, as they lead down to emerald coves and reveal panoramas that will be hard to leave behind. The trails are good for walking, but also for cycling, which can be done all year long. In the spring, the air will be filled with the scent of aromatic herbs, in the fall, it will lead you through ripe Pošip vineyards and fruitful olive canopies, while walking or riding along the sunny, Mediterranean island in the winter is also a special experience. The more than 400 km of cycling trails, which range from easier to more demanding, will fulfill the expectations of both adventurers and recreational athletes. Bikes and all the necessary equipment can be rented at one of the local agencies that also offer bike maintenance, bike transfers, and guided bike tours. On the island, you can also find bike and hike friendly accommodations, along with solarpowered bike maintenance sets that include reparation equipment and bike stands. »

You can also release adrenaline and endorphins (hormones of happiness) on Marco Polo's island in another way. Tighten the sails and explore the rugged coastline of the island with many bays and the Korčula archipelago with more than 80 islets, try wind sailing, SUP to your heart's desire, challenge yourself at climbing points, rent a kayak and row to enchanting bays, dive into the flourishing underwater world, or join the fishermen - sail out at dawn and cast a net... Of course, you can also always play tennis or soccer or try your hand at bocce, an old game typical in Dalmatia. You might not get the chance to play, but at least take the chance to watch a match or water polo, the most popular sport on the island. Round off your active vacation on Korčula by participating in a sports event. The Vela Luka Outdoors festival (mid-September), and the Marco Polo Challenge, a mid-level triathlon (April), are highly recommended.

When you get hungry after an active day, take a break in one of the island's restaurants, taverns, wineries, or olive oil tasting centers. You can choose between family-run, rustical taverns with a cozy vibe, all the way to restaurants with a prestigious Michelin star. Local, homegrown seasonal ingredients, fish and seafood, top-notch olive oil, superbquality wines, and aromatic herbs from the island are an endless source of inspiration for Korčula's chefs for the preparation of delicious, creative dishes. During your stay on Korčula try Žrnovski makaruni (local handmade pasta), which goes excellently with meat and fish sauces, pašticada with homemade gnocchi, seafood risotto, brodetto, popara (a casserole made with various kinds of fish), octopus roasted in its own juices... The dishes are further enriched with a drizzle of fantastic Korčula olive oil, and the gourmet experience is enhanced with superb white wines made with grapes indigenous to the island. Pošip, Grk, and Rukatac represent the white sorts, while Plavac Mali is the red wine produced locally. Make sure to also try Prošek, a dessert wine, and aromatic spirits made with herbs, carob, and roses. They pair beautifully with sweet delicacies - lumblija, cukarini, klašuni, lojenica, amareti, rožata, arancini, sugared almonds... Sweet, active, and full of new experiences... that's what you can expect from your vacation on enchanting Korčula. 

A

ccording to the best-known legend of the island, the one about Odysseus and Calypso, "...it was the most beautiful island of all seas and oceans...". You can judge for yourself whether it is truly the prettiest, but Mljet is definitely the greenest and most forested Croatian island. Most of the island is part of a national park, and the most famous part of the park are two natural phenomena - salt lakes, the Great Lake and Small Lake, connected with a shallow, narrow channel through which seawater flows during high and low tides. As if there wasn't enough beauty, there is another pearl immersed in the calm, southern part of Great Lake - the island of St. Mary, with a church and Benedictine monastery from the 12th century, which is the best-known motif of Mljet. The island's rugged coastline with its many turquoise coves and divine beaches, reachable peaks, and fairytale landscapes are reason enough to spend your holiday on Mljet actively. Walking and hiking will take you through the untouched nature of the island, next to many attractions, and all the way to

viewpoints that offer a view of the park, island, and surrounding archipelago. Veliki Grad, above Babino Polje, is the tallest peak of the island (514 m), and both Montokuc and Grabova Glava are known as attractive viewpoints. The many island peaks are connected by the 43 km-long Mljet hiking trail, and an especially interesting part is the one that leads from Sobra to Pomena. In the heart of the island, in the lowlands of Babino Polje, thematic trails of olives, sacral treasure, natural springs, and stone walls, the art of which is inscribed on UNESCO's list, meander. If you head down the Olive Trail, which connects the towns of Babino Polje and Maranovići, you will pass through olive groves with a view of the coastline and the open sea. The trail will take you to Odysseus' cave and the Duke's palace (Knežev dvor) with an ethno collection, next to chapels and churches (including the church of St. Blaise that dates back to the time of the Republic of Dubrovnik), old stone walls, beautiful coves, and medicinal herbs. Take the old Austrian Road, which is now an educational trail, above the town of Sobra and beneath Prožura... The trails are also great for riding a mountain bike, while it's better to choose the island's paved trails for family panorama rides. Bikes can be rented at several locations on the »

according to legend, after experiencing a shipwreck near Mljet, found shelter in that cave where he was seduced by the nymph Calypso. During good weather, it is possible to sail into the cave, or simply swim into it. Plan on visiting the cave in the summer, around noon, when the sun illuminates it most and an impressive spectrum of light appears in the sea. Incredibly beautiful natural beaches are another feature of the island. Pebbles, sand, rocks... Mljet has it all. You can find sandy paradise on the southeastern side of the island, and amazing hidden pebble beaches in the bays of Okuklje, Prožura, Sobra, Polače, Sutmiholjska, Garma...

Tour the best of the park accompanied by expert guides, as part of an organized excursion, while enjoying your favorite activity. You can choose from a hiking excursion, bike ride, SUPing on the lake, sea kayaking, and sports climbing. RIMAC NEVERA CRYPTO STAMP

Presenting postage stamps

Rimac Nevera crypto stamp The Croatian electric hypercar of the future - Rimac Nevera - is the motif of the third Croatian crypto stamp.

The crypto stamp can be ordered via the link:

24

tipTravelMagazine June 2023 - May 2024

S

ince 2020, the Croatian Post has been issuing crypto stamps that are envisioned as a perfect combination of analogue and digital. The first one we are presenting was the third to be issued, and it commemorates the Croatian hypercar of the future - the Rimac Nevera. It is a fully electric hypercar, with a maximum speed of 412 km/h, made to offer a level of performance that has yet to be seen. With 1914 HP and four electric engines, the Nevera can accelerate to 100 km/h in 1.85 seconds, and to 100 miles per hour in just 4.3 seconds. The incredible acceleration is retained during the entire cycle under full gas and reaches 300 km/h in 9.3 seconds. Yes, it is the fastest serial electric car in the world! The car has been completely designed, developed, and produced by the Rimac Automobili Company in Croatia, and proudly bears the Croatian name - Nevera (storm). The company says "Nevera is a quick, sudden, and mighty Mediterranean storm, extremely powerful and charged by lightning", and emphasizes that the hypercar shares not only the name of the

storm, but also its features. "Able to transform in a split second from a supple grand tourer to an all-out force of nature, Nevera is charged by lightning much like its namesake". The crypto stamp with the Nevera motif was issued on September 9, 2021, and it was designed by Ivana Vučić and Tomislav-Jurica Kaćunić, designers from Zagreb, while the photographer was Danijel Palčić. To faithfully transpose collecting into the digital world, crypto stamps are divided into different digital categories, emphasizing distinctiveness and exclusivity. The Rimac Nevera motif appears in five different categories: the golden, silver, bronze, grey, and blue-green Rimac Nevera, making for a total of 30000 copies. The block contains one stamp and is placed on a PVC base. This issue of the crypto stamp has been issued in collaboration with the Rimac Automobili Company and Croatian companies BitX and NodeFactory. 

P

erhaps you aren't aware of the fact that when you imagine a holiday on sunny, white beaches next to the turquoise sea, you are imagining a holiday in Brela. A favorite travel destination in central Dalmatia, located at the foot of Biokovo Mountain, stretched over seven kilometers of natural, white pebble beaches splashed by the crystal clear sea, is enchanting at first sight. Although all the beaches are attractive and lined with pine forests that offer refreshing shade in the summer, two beaches stand out from the rest - Punta Rata and Podrače. They have already charmed international media outlets, which have regularly awarded them high positions on lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The most beautiful view of Brela and part of the Makarska Riviera can be seen if you hike up to Šuplja Stina (Hollow Rock - the Eye of Biokovo), a natural phenomenon. The large hole in the rock, which is reminiscent of an eye, offers a view perfect for your profile photo on social media. In less than thirty minutes you can walk from Šuplja stina to the new, attractive hiker's shelter Pakline (852 m), which is reminiscent of a wagon from the Wild West. It is located on one of Biokovo's most beautiful trails, and it offers a view that you will surely remember for a long time. If you head towards the Pakline shelter from Brela, you will go down the old, never completed French (Napoleon) trail that dates back to the 19th century. interesting facts about that special road. The road is actually a gentle hiking trail and a viewpoint that offers an amazing view of the Makarska Riviera. Every year, dry stone wall construction workshops are held there. After that, head down to Brela, which offers a lot of options for recreation - in, on, and next to the sea. In the summer, there are free workouts next to the sea - this summer, they offer Pilates (every morning except on Sundays), and Nordic walking three times weekly along the seven-kilometer-long coastal walking trail. Brela is also a stage for many events. It's a special experience in the summer to spend the evening watching a good movie on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Yes, Punta Rata becomes a movie theater under the stars every Friday during July and August 2023. It is nurtured by the people of Sinj from a young age so nearly every city street and settlement has its own children's Alka. The most famous one is the Children's Alka of Vučkovići that is held in August in the settlement of Vučkovići, and the only children allowed to participate are boys under the age of ten whose last name is Vučković. The little alkar knights participate in the Alka on foot, the alka squires are older inhabitants from Vučkovići, and the Alka judging panel and commander are the eldest inhabitants. The little Alkars are called various nicknames: Wolf, Horned Viper, Bumblebee, Friar, the Apple of Grandpa's Eye... The unique Children's Alka of Vučkovići transformed from a local festival into a true attraction long ago, and attracts many tourists, just like the original Sinj Alka does in Sinj. 

Gladiator night (July 15, 2023), starts with a gladiator fight in the Salona amphitheater at 9 pm and continues with a fire show attended by Emperor Diocletian and Empress Priska. n the very heart of Dalmatia, in ancient Salona - present-day Solin, there will once again be the opportunity to go back to ancient times during three summer nights. At that time, gladiators, Emperor Diocletian and Empress Priska, ancient entertainers, and craftspeople can be seen on the streets of Solin, a city with arguably the best backdrop to show what life was like in ancient times. However, to completely enjoy the experience of going far back into history, come to Solin, Croatia's largest archeological park, a little earlier to explore it better. While on your walk, the must-see sites are Manastirine (an ancient Christian graveyard), Tusculum (the Archeological Museum with replicas of old artifacts), and the 2nd-century amphitheater. Also visit the cathedral grounds with two basilicas, a baptistery, and a spa, and continue on your walk to the Gašpina watermill on the Jadro River. You can even see how they grind grain there, just like they did in the 18th century. Follow the river and you will arrive at the Isle of Our Lady with the oldest Marian shrine in Croatia. Gather your thoughts next to the peaceful river, revitalize yourself with delicious dishes from one of the local

rka National Park includes the most beautiful portion of the Krka River course and the lower course of the Čikola River. The main phenomenon is travertine, created by carbonate deposits, which along the entire course of the river created seven enchanting waterfalls. The largest waterfall, and most abundant in water on the Krka River is Skradinski buk, which is also the longest travertine barrier in Europe. Two spiritual centers found their homes in the lake portions of the river course: the Franciscan monastery with the Church of Our Lady of Mercy on the islet of Visovac, a pearl of Croatian natural and cultural

heritage, and the monastery of the Holy Archangel in Carigradska draga, an important spiritual center of the Dalmatian Orthodox Eparchy. The National Park is also home to many endemic plant and animal species. Among the numerous caves and grottos within the Krka National Park is Oziđana pećina (cave), a prehistoric site above the Roški waterfall. Ruins of several medieval 14th century fortresses can also be found along the banks of the Krka River. The ruins of Burnum, a Roman military camp, are located just above the Manojlovac waterfall, the tallest waterfall on the Krka River.

The National Park is open to visitors all year long. There is a total of 47 km of walking trails and 388 km of cycling trails.

In spring 2022, the Krka National Park Public Institution opened the Krka Eco Campus in Puljane, a large educational visitor's center with reception facilities, as part of the large Unknown Krka - Hidden Treasures of the Upper and Middle Course of the Krka River project. The newly-renovated Krka Eco Campus in Puljane is designed for children, students, volunteers, researchers, or those visitors interested in getting to know more about the rich natural, cultural, and historical heritage of Krka NP in detail. It includes the Archeological Collection, which displays artifacts found in excavations in the area of the Burnum Roman military camp, the Temple of Nature, the Nature Collection that presents the rich natural heritage of the

protected area, the Laboratory of Nature, an educational center for primary-school children, an Outdoor school (amphitheater), an outdoor educational area, and the Volunteer Center, a research center with hostel-type accommodations and laboratories for researchers. Croatia has the largest charter fleet in the world with more than five thousand charter vessels, and it is the mostdesired destination for charter guests in international search engines for renting boats. According to the results of the 6th annual Tomas nautika survey "Attitudes and spending habits of sailors in Croatia in 2022" conducted by the Croatian Institute for Tourism, not only are there many sailors, but they are also highly-desired guests considering how much they spend during their stay in Croatia: 60 percent rent a yacht from a Croatian charter company, while 54 percent also hire a skipper, so charter tourism is one of the most profitable branches of tourism. At the EUSAIR conference on sustainable nautical tourism held in early July 2023 in Zagreb, the Croatian Minister of Tourism and Sport, Nikolina Brnjac, emphasized that the new Tourism Act would improve the promotion of investing in tourism, and for the first time a special framework of incentives for sustainable nautical tourism would be created. "Tourism projects with high added value, which include charter fleets, will be subsidized. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from tourism, the decarbonization of the tourist infrastructure and the green transition of the tourist fleet will be ensured. For the first time, it will be possible to use subsidies for charter fleets for the renewal or purchase of clean or zero-emission vehicles", she stated.

KORNATI NATIONAL PARK

Responsible, sustainable, and eco-friendly sailing is a trend, but also the duty of any serious sailor. and try to reduce waste, separate it, and use eco-friendly bags. If you pass by any plastic bags or bottles on the way, feel free to pick them up. True, it's not your trash, but nature will be grateful to you, as well as the bottlenose dolphins you might catch playing near your boat. We'd all love to enjoy that common occurrence in the waters of Kornati for a long time, wouldn't we? 

In order to stop 'wild and uncontrolled' anchoring, the plan for 2024 is to place eco-friendly buoys in all 19 bays that allow anchorage, after which there will be a total of 223 moorings in the park.

When the winds are good, turn off the engine, tighten the sails, and enjoy the silence that is only disturbed by the splashing of the waves against the boat and the call of a passing seagull. t's no secret that the post-season on the Croatian Adriatic is a favorite time amongst sailors. At that time, the temperatures are more pleasant, the sea is still warm, the winds are good, crowds have dwindled, prices are more affordable... But, where should you sail? There is a wide range of routes available from the northern to the southern Adriatic, but still, some locations are more attractive than others. What do you say to sailing though the densest cluster of islands in the Mediterranean, which is called "Croatian Heaven on Earth", and which is also a national park? There is no doubt that Kornati National Park will fulfill all your nautical expectations, but also so much more. The enchanting beauty of that island paradise, into which the locals continuously invest a lot in the protection of nature and biodiversity, will definitely inspire you to take up responsible and eco-friendly sailing. So, instead of just dropping anchor, choose to dock at one of the eco-friendly moorings, of which there are currently about a hundred in the park's attractive coves, and tie your boat (up to 16 m in length) to a buoy. In that way you will contribute to the protection and conservation of the Posidonia oceanica sea grass, endemic to the Mediterranean Sea and a strictly protected species that has an incredible important role in preserving biological diversity and producing oxygen. nique museums, an abundance of galleries, and theaters aren't the only reasons fans of culture and art should visit Zagreb. A thousand years of the city's history and culture are inscribed in the charming city streets and squares, in parks, and in gardens. Just a glance at the Classical and Art Nouveau building façades, churches, monuments, and art installations are evidence that Zagreb is an endless treasure of culture at every step.

As an epicenter of culture and art, the city is a stage for many cultural events all year long. One of the most attractive ones that harmoniously combines art, design, entertainment, and architecture rejuvenates locations on the Upper and Lower Town every year as spring starts. The Festival of Lights Zagreb (March), is a true light spectacle where creative light installations with playful animations and colorful buildings run the show. »

Artupunktura (autumn), an art platform that connects culture and tourism, and brings artwork, creative and design work, and products inspired by pop culture to the streets and squares of Zagreb is a true form of art and culture therapy in Zagreb. scene in this part of Europe. Besides art projects, the organizers and artists also prepare several workshops and programs that, just like the Croatian metropolis, pulsate to the beat of modern art. Art and creativity are also visible on Zagreb's streets, squares, and promenades, as well as in parks at the end of the year, during Advent in Zagreb. Yes, everyone impatiently looks forward to December in Zagreb, and the holiday magic of Zagreb's Advent won over the world long ago. Besides being awarded the title of the best Christmas Fair in Europe for three consecutive years, Advent in Zagreb has also been included on the prestigious list of the best Christmas markets in the world. The creatively decorated city, abundant offer of food and drinks, a traditional Christmas fair, numerous events for all generations, and plenty of music to evoke the Christmas spirit in the city are a tried-and-tested recipe for the perfect Advent in Zagreb. Up to 40 percent of all travel in the world is motivated by a cultural event, program, or incentive, and that is precisely the segment where Zagreb has a lot to offer - from its urban heritage and culturalhistoric entities to fantastic museums, galleries, and theaters, all the way to world-class cultural events. As a cultural metropolis, Zagreb continuously enriches its offer of cultural tourism and solidifies

During that time, Zagreb's streets, squares, parks, promenades, and buildings become a canvas for Croatian and foreign artists, whose creative works delight the people of Zagreb and their guests. Superb classics under an open sky - that's the easiest way to describe Zagreb Classic (June), an open air festival that is a true treat for fans of classical music. Over the course of a few days, renowned international and Croatian musicians and ensembles abandon their prestigious stages all over the world and move to one of the most beautiful squares in Zagreb, King Tomislav Square. There, under a starry sky, they perform the best classical music on a unique stage. You can attend the free concerts at the open-air music hall in sports or casual attire and find your place under the stars on the grass, surrounded with city lights, flower beds, and other fans of magnificent music.

A viewpoint opened in the TV tower on Sljeme As of late April 2023, Zagreb has another new attraction - the long-awaited viewpoint on the tower on Sljeme, one of the symbols of Zagreb, and the tallest point of the Croatian metropolis, has opened. The Sljeme 360 viewpoint is located at 1118 m a.s.l. in the Medvednica Nature Park on the OIV Sljeme tower from which television and radio signals are sent. It is a place that offers a spectacular panoramic view of the entire Medvednica Mountain, Zagreb and its surrounding area, Croatian Zagorje, and all the way to the Slovenian Alps. The viewpoint is located just 50 m from the upper station of the new, modern Sljeme Cable Car, and for now, the public can access just the open terrace that can be reached by elevator. By the end of the year, they plan on opening a rotating restaurant, and the owner of the concession has also announced a lot of other features: a museum to honor the greatest Croatian sports achievements, a museum of chocolate, a climbing wall (at the base of the tower)... On weekends and holidays, while the weather is nice and warm, several events will be held at the open viewpoint, such as falconry, the promotion of wine and ecofriendly products by local producers all the way to spontaneous gatherings and parties for hikers. The licensed travel guide at the viewpoint will be happy to show you where everything is and to help you with your orientation. The viewpoint's working hours coincide with the cable car's work hours, so the viewpoint is open from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM on workdays, and from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM on weekends. 

6th Elements: A fantastic example of gastronomic branding in Daruvar

Zagreb County Tourist Board promotional film won a prestigious award

In contrast to the famous movie Fifth Element, Daruvar's line of beer Peti element (Fifth Element) and the city of Daruvar's gastro brand project 6th Elements aren't sci-fi, but true reality. The city run by the element of water is known far and wide for its hot springs, health tourism, and for being a rehab and training destination for athletes. However, with its offer, Daruvar has stepped outside the box and positioned itself as a fantastic food and wine destination. So, the city is known for its superb wines and craft beer, and excellent gastronomy. Daruvar's restaurateurs gathered together and as part of the 6th Elements project have now brought together the best of what the destination has to offer to create special menus dedicated to the following themes: Foods to boost immunity, Foods for athletes, and Daruvar's pairings. So, next time you come to Daruvar, choose a dish, some of which are based on sage, garlic, ginger, honey, and horseradish to chase ailments away in the restaurant of your choice, and boost your natural immunity. Athletes are sure to choose one of the specially created dishes high in protein. Daruvar's pairings pair dishes made with fresh, local ingredients with certain Peti Element craft beers or Staročeško beer, or with Daruvar's wines, natural lemonade, or homemade yogurt. The 6th Elements project is run by the Daruvar-Papuk Tourist Board in collaboration with Gastronaut Club.

Representatives of the Zagreb County Tourist Board received an award for having one of the best tourism films at the 35th World Tourism Film Awards, held in Valencia (Spain), on November 22, 2023, organized by the Inter national Committee of Tourism Film Festivals (CIFFT). The "A Taste Above" promotional film won 4th place as Best Tourism Film in the category of tourism products. In order to even be nominated for the festival, the film also participated and won several awards at international tourism film festivals. You can watch the film by clicking here:

Don't spend too much time lounging in the sun because there's so much to explore near the beaches. Some of Kvarner's most beautiful paths and thematic trails lead to them, and on the way they reveal attractive viewpoints, cultural attractions, and natural phenomena. Discover that treasure while walking, running, or cycling. Make sure to also head towards the interior - many trails connect the coast with the untouched nature of the hinterland, passing by olive groves, vineyards, and aromatic Mediterranean herbs. Choose your own backdrop for recreation in magnificent nature - from Krk - the Golden Island, Rab - the Happy Island, Lošinj - the Island of Vitality, and Cres - the No Stress Island, all the way to aristocratic Opatija Riviera, the lively Crikvenica-Vinodol Riviera, and Rijeka, Croatia's largest harbor. To your route, add a walk on Opatija's Lungomare, Rijeka's Rječina promenade, meandering on the paths of the Mediterranean Love Labyrinth in Crikvenica, and hiking to the Plateau of the Moon on the island of Krk. Release some endorphins (happy hormones) on the Epario, Capo Fronte, and Frux trails on the island of Rab. On Lošinj, revitalize your body and soul on the Promenade of Vitality, and then get lost on the walking trails on Cres, an island that is like a large botanical garden. Explore Kvarner from top to bottom - from the air, land, and sea, all the way to the magnificent underwater world. Paragliding, parachuting, climbing, wakeboarding, diving, sailing, surfing, SUPing, waterskiing... Choose your favorite activity or accept the challenge and try something new. »

To start off, relax, because Kvarner's enchanting landscape of preserved and aromatic nature beckons you to unwind. The best backdrops for that are Kvarner's beaches. Sand, pebbles, or rocks, long, easily accessible, with plenty of facilities, or quiet and hidden in a bay you need to sail to. The selection is truly vast. They are all splashed by the clear, blue sea, and some of them also fly the blue flag that guarantees incredible cleanliness of the sea, beaches, and surrounding area. Although they are all amazingly beautiful, some of them stand out: St. John's Beach in Lubenice on the island of Cres, Paradise Beach in Lopar on the island of Rab, Vela Beach in Baška on the island of Krk, Zabodarski Beach on the island of Lošinj, Sipar Beach in Mošćenička Draga... If your four-legged friend will be joining you on your vacation, you will also find fantastic dog beaches in Kvarner, the most popular one being Podvorska in Crikvenica, which received the title of the best dog beach in the Adriatic.

Just 20 minutes away from the sea by car is an empire of centuries-old forests, impressive canyons, mysterious rivers, and lakes - Gorski Kotar. The more than 400 km of marked trails that connect the natural and cultural attractions beckon you to go hiking, walking, and cycling. Try your hand at rafting, climbing, or zip-lining, and test your limits in adrenaline parks. Row a kayak or canoe in fast mountain rivers, swim in a clear river or lake, experience the adventure of horseback riding in idyllic nature... Enjoy new experiences until you get hungry, and then a feast for your taste buds starts - inspired by nature, but also homegrown products from local farms. Dishes made with game are a hit there, as are frog's legs, trout, and dishes made with mushrooms, sauerkraut, and potatoes. Desserts made with blueberries, strawberries, apples, and elderberry will spoil your taste buds even more.

Top gourmet destinations Throughout Kvarner, follow restaurants and taverns that bear the Kvarner Gourmet and Kvarner Food trademarks as they guarantee superb gastronomic experiences. On the plates in the region, which is in the very top of Croatia's gourmet scene, the diversity of Kvarner's landscape is seen in the connection between the mountains and the sea. The chefs there find inspiration in fresh, local, seasonal ingredients to prepare their creative dishes, while respecting tradition, but also taking modern gastronomic trends into account. The king of the table in Kvarner is the tender and sweet shrimp, for which gourmets gladly flock to Kvarner, as they know it is famous as the most delicious shrimp in the world. On the islands and in the coastal region, the stars of the table are Mediterranean dishes made with oily fish, crabs, and shellfish, enhanced with liquid gold - superb olive oil, and seasoned with wild aromatic herbs - rosemary, bay leaf, sage, lavender... While on the islands, try island lamb, sheep and goat cheese, albumin cheese, and prosciutto, and while in restaurants throughout Kvarner, try the delicious octopus roasted under a bell, and handmade šurlice pasta. Juicy cherries and chestnuts from Lovran are a delicacy in their own right, just like desserts such as Rab cake, Frankopan cake, ice cream made from Žlahtina, and smokvenjak (fig cake). Kvarner's light, white Žlahtina wine will round off the gastronomic experience, and you can also raise a glass of Valomet, champagne that ages at the bottom of the sea. Once you discover them, you will return to diverse Kvarner again for the unique experiences it offers because - diversity is beautiful. 

ISTRIA

Truffles - Istria's hidden treasure The Ancient Romans called it Terra Magica, and today Istria is a magical land full of treasured stories. One of the best stories is that of truffles, precious underground mushrooms with an identifiable aroma and flavor, which are incredibly valued in the world of supreme cuisine. Truffles have found their favorite habitat in Istria in the Motovun Forest, in the Mirna River Valley, at a depth of 5 to 30 cm under the surface. The most famous inhabitant of the Motovun Forest was the white autumn Tuber Magnatum Pico truffle, the most prized and most expensive truffle in the world, so it's no wonder owners of renowned restaurants worldwide would love to have it in their kitchens. The largest white truffle in the world was found in Istria, which was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Istria is also home to several species of black truffles, which are available all year long. When the trained hunting dogs find them, and the truffles arrive in the hands of Istrian chefs, that is when their role begins - enhancing various creative dishes and giving them a special flavor. Whichever part of the Istrian peninsula you are in, try dishes enriched with Istria's most famous gourmet treat. Heading out on an organized truffle hunt, which requires some time, but also some patience, is a special experience.

n the slopes of the winegrowing hills in northwestern Istria and in the unique place where four types of soil - white, grey, black, and red - meet, there is a fairytale vista Brtonigla. The picturesque town, loved by gourmets and hedonists, has been on the international gourmet and enological scene for years. In Brtonigla, tradition, culture, gastronomy, and hospitality are strongly intertwined and deeply rooted, and the fertile land there has given generations of its hardworking citizens an abundance of heavenly fruits, which they have later transformed into extra virgin olive oil, superb wines, and enticing delicacies. Delicious fruit, tasty vegetables, fantastic cheeses... there are many things to delight your taste buds in Brtonigla. The town is also home to the most-awarded small hotel in Croatia, the leading organic winery in Istria, and restaurants recommended by prestigious international gastronomy guides - Michelin and Gault&Millau.

To create an even stronger bond between local farmers, hospitality workers, and tourists, the locals started a sustainable development project "L'ortolano", with the slogan "From our hands, from our land". The goal is to promote greater local production and consumption, while offering guests the unique experience of enjoying superb, authentic products. So, the next time you visit Brtonigla, look for restaurants, taverns, family farms, products, promotional materials, souvenirs, etc. that bear the "L'ortolano" brand, a guarantee of quality and product freshness. If you see the sign "0 kilometers" on a product, it's another reminder from the hosts that the product you are holding in your hand is local, or authentic. Once you are delighted by the flavors and authentic Istrian lifestyle, head out to explore the enchanting nature and area surrounding Brtonigla, and visit one of the many events held there. 

Papuk is the hiking mecca for the people of Daruvar, a picturesque spa town, built alongside hot springs. Petrov vrh (547 m a.s.l.), with its hiking cabin, is amongst the most visited peaks of Papuk, and it takes about 2.5 hours to reach it from Daruvar on a marked hiking trail. There are many hiking trails meandering through Western Papuk, including the one that leads to Vrani Kamen, the international dark sky park. It is a must-see destination for astronomers and astrophotographers, as well as for all those who want to enjoy watching and photographing the magical starry night sky. After an active day, treat yourself to some well-deserved hedonism. To start off, head out on a delicious enogastronomy journey and discover the irresistible flavors of local delicacies that are a common motive for people to visit the Bjelovar-Bilogora region. While in traditional wooden cabins and wine cellars of the Daruvar and Bjelovar wine

roads try superb sorts of wine - awardwinning Bilogora Graševina, a refreshing wine with a rich flavor, but also superb dry wines such as Rhine Riesling, Chardonnay, Traminac, and Sauvignon. Bilogora's wineries also produce excellent red wines, including Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Portugizac, and Frankovka. Local wines pair excellently with homemade cow, sheep, and goat cheeses. The locals prepare them according to old recipes and use them to prepare traditional dishes such as gibanica, buckwheat štrukli, and various pies. Another gastro hit is "prge", or cone-shaped cheese. Dishes made with game meat, smoked meat products, and delicious cakes made with home-grown apples, walnuts, and honey will seduce your taste buds. After a delicious lunch, rest in style, and in the area of therapeutic hot springs and mineral mud, relax with true wellness experiences. At the Daruvar spa, where Romans had a spa back in the 2nd century, you can find a wide selection of wellness programs, antistress health programs, and a wellnessspa oasis with a sauna, steam bath, jacuzzi, and offer of massages. If Roman emperors were able to revitalize their bodies and spirits there, while relaxing and truly enjoying themselves, there's no reason for you not to too. 

n the southern part of continental Croatia, in the Banovina-Pounje region, where nature created a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, and people, who have lived there harmoniously for centuries, have enriched it with their hard work, new attractive tourism stories are being developed presently. It is an area shaped by the Una and Sunja rivers, water springs, and forests that beckon you to go on a bike ride, take a walk, or hike through that hilly-mountainous landscape. Famous inhabitants of the forests there are chestnut trees, and the locals use the nuts to prepare various dishes, and there has been a festival held in honor of that delicious forest fruit for more than twenty years in the city of Hrvatska Kostajnica (which was named after the chestnut - "kesten") named Kestenijada (October 6-8, 2023), famous even beyond the borders of Croatia. At the three-day festival, for which it is truly worth making the trip to the town on an island in the middle of the Una River, there are plenty of treats:

including everything from gastronomy to entertainment. Performances by folk dance groups, concerts, old-fashioned games and old trades, various activities for all generations, and plenty of fun are all reasons to come. Although it is the most famous, the Kestenijada isn't the only event in the area. The international "Una Regata - Lađom niz Unom" regatta, Polenta festival, Fisherman's Night, Mardi Gras, Una Art Colony, and the Labor Day Cycling Festival are just some of the events with which the locals attract many tourists to their area. Whichever reason to visit the Banovina-Pounje area you choose, don't miss out on visiting at least some of the cultural sites of the area such as the medieval fortress of the Zrinski Old Town. Hike up to the top of Čukur Mountain and see Hrvatska Kostajnica and the Una Valley through a large, cracked photo lens. The "Broken Landscape" memorial was installed there in memory of Gordan Lederer, a photographer killed in the Homeland War, who took his last shots from that viewpoint. 

Active and full of experiences The uncelebrated corner of continental Croatia is a true paradise for fans of active vacations. Get your pulse racing in the idyllic surroundings of Podravina and Prigorje. One of the most beautiful ways to explore the area is accompanied by a noble companion - a horse. The more than 280 km of equestrian tourism trails, which are a continuation of the Bilogora Equestrian Trail, will reveal the cultural and enogastronomical treasure of that area on the way. Stop, explore, taste... The Drava River beckons you to have a completely different adventure. A canoe ride (down a 12 km-long canoe trail) reveals the beauty of the one of the best-preserved flows of the "European Amazon". The "Bike & Boat Podravina" circuit route combines a bike ride and a boat ride, while also revealing Podravina's enticing gastronomy and many interesting features. You can also sail down the Drava with a solar boat, or decide to take an exciting rafting adventure.

lthough nature treats us to unique views all year long, in autumn it creates especially inspirational landscapes. One of the most beautiful ways to enjoy that beauty is through active holidays, and great destinations for outdoor activities are Podravina and Prigorje. The mysterious pearls of continental Croatia attract a growing number of fans of nature, recreational athletes, and those looking for an adrenaline rush by offering a wide range of outdoor activities. Rafting, canoeing, boat rides, cycling, hiking, climbing, horseback riding, adrenaline quad rides, or just a light walk through the woods that relaxes your body and mind? Choose your favorite activity or a combination of them, but make sure to set aside enough time for active experiences outdoors.

From north to south, from east to west, December is full of magic in Croatian destinations. Despite the cold of December, Advent awakens the warmest feelings, gathers us around the table with those we love most, and the aromas and flavors of Christmas cookies, gingerbread, fritule, hot chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves take us back in time to our childhood, a time when we were carefree and believed in magic... For it to come alive for at least a month per year, in December, cities across Croatia transform into enchanting outdoor stages, every year they get more lavish and creative, and the content-filled diverse Advent programs, designed for all generations, are here to gather us, bring us closer to one another, evoke emotion, entertain us, and remind us of the importance of community.

ust 40 kilometers east of the Croatian capital is a charming town full of stories, many of which surround the three kinds of black gold that Ivanić-Grad is known for far and wide: delicious pumpkin seed oil, precious oil, and therapeutic naphthalene oil. While you can enjoy the view of fields full of pumpkins of various shapes and colors in the autumn months, oil and the only source of naphthalene in Europe are well-preserved underground treasures all year long. The many oil pumps

in the area, symbols of the industrial heritage of the city, bear witness to the existence of oil in the area, and the locals skillfully transform them into a tourist attraction. That is especially apparent during Advent, when the pumps are illuminated and they become milestones for runners at the unique 9 km long Black Gold Night Run, a road race that takes place at night. The race route passes through the city of Ivanić-Grad, and runs along the edge of the Žutica forest, and is symbolically held on December 9, 2023 (starting at 6:00 PM), during the celebration of the feast day of St. Barbara, the protector saint of miners, firefighters, and good death, connected to Advent traditions. Besides celebrating oil, one of their three black golds, with the race, the locals also use it to send a message about the importance of being active and having healthy habits, rightfully so - during the winter, when we most often hide away in our warm homes with an abundance of holiday treats. The night race is a great opportunity to combine running, in the unique ambiance of illuminated oil pumps, with delicious delicacies, since the runners are awaited with refreshments after the race at Advent in Ivanić. 

VARAŽDIN

The city where stories come true is the perfect place to experience the magic of the holidays.

I

f you'd like to experience true magic this Advent, head to Varaždin. The charming city in northwestern Croatia, which has been known as the place with the best quality of life in Croatia for a long time, will convincingly confirm its status of the most magical place in Croatia this Advent. To start off, look for magic in the enchanting courtyard of the Sermage palace, which to the delight of both the young and old, is transformed into Santa Claus' Magical City during Advent in Varaždin (December 1, 2023 - January 7, 2024). While there, the youngest visitors will whisper their wishes to Santa, and right next to his office, in Mrs. Claus' cottage, they can watch seasonal animated films, and participate in creative workshops while eating delicious cookies. You will also see elves who make sure everyone is having fun, and even the Grinch is in a good mood, so there's no reason to worry about him stealing Christmas. The Sweet Corner is sure to bring a smile to your face, and make sure to duck into the souvenir shop and search for plenty of charming photo spots to get the perfect holiday photo.

Santa Claus' Magical City is just one of eight enchanting locations that await you there. You will have them all at the palm of your hand at a height of 23 meters while riding the ferris wheel that offers an idyllic view of Varaždin decked out for the holidays. Advent magic will follow you as you stroll through the picturesque historical city center, and your walk will be even sweeter, warmer, and more pleasant with a cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine in hand. To warm up even more, visit Icy Magic and get an adrenaline rush on the ice rink with ice paths, and

the large ice slide. It is a favourite hot spot for families and friends, but also a place where you are sure to work up an appetite after ice skating and sliding. Satiate yourself with holiday delicacies whose delicious aromas wafting from the advent booths permeate the city. An abundance of great music, songs and dances, plenty of surprises, and a bountiful offer for holiday shopping are also an integral part of Advent. For New Year's Eve, the locals are preparing a spectacle on Korzo, along with the already-traditional New Year's race. To make sure this isn't all just a story, see for yourself - this Advent, visit Varaždin, a city where stories come true. 

Kuglof, linzers, vanilla cookies, poppy seed roll, walnut roll, fritule, kroštule, fig cake, arancini, sugared almonds, rožata, salenjaci, meringues... they are all treats without which the Christmas holidays in Croatia would be unimaginable. In the abundant array of treats, two traditional ones stand out - medenjaci and paprenjaci (honey cookies and gingerbread). The combination of spices is responsible for the irresistible aroma of the sweet honey cookies. Along with honey, medenjaci also have cloves and cinnamon, and honey cookie makers are also known to add saffron, nutmeg, lemon zest, as well as rum, brandy, or prošek. Honey is also the base of paprenjaci, a crispy cookie that owes its flavor to ground cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. If you are in Croatia during the holidays, make sure to taste the sweet flavors of the holidays. 

Besides Advent, great festivals, and various events, in winter in Croatia we also excitedly look forwards to experiencing idyllic snowy Gorski Kotar. The enchanting region with natural beauty in western Croatia, located just 30 kilometers from the sea, truly offers everything - preserved forests and mountains, mystical caves and canyons, mountain rivers, lakes, springs... and an idyllic winter that impresses even those who aren't great fans of the winter. Sledding runs wherever you go, ski slopes, the possibility of Nordic walking and ski running, plenty of ice rinks, tons of snowmen, enchanting landscapes, and joy await you in the forested kingdom. Take some time to visit the king - the Risnjak National Park, and Delnice, a town in the heart of Gorski Kotar where you can enjoy the snowy landscape and (of course, if there is snow) take a horse-drawn sleigh ride during Delnice's Advent fairytale. Gorski Kotar is definitely one of the most sought-after Croatian destinations for winter vacations, but also for New Years' celebrations, so those who love winter often reserve their accommodations there months in advance. 

1

The return of cruising

Over the past few years, the cruising industry, worth several billion dollars, was greatly affected by the pandemic. Cruising is also amongst the last segments of the travel industry to relaunch. While they were impatiently waiting for the moment cruise ships would once again sail the open seas, cruising companies took advantage of the break for consolidation, modernization, and to introduce novelties. Cruising is now returning bigger and better than before, and journeys are sold out far in advance. New ships, or floating cities, are being built, the offer is expanding... Once you choose the cruise to suit you, all you have to do is relax and enjoy the priceless experience offered by one of the least stressful and most attractive forms of a vacation.

An increase in virtual and augmented reality

After the world closed its borders and limited real-life travel during the pandemic, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) platforms gained popularity. Virtual trips were designed to help travelers feed their desire to explore the world, but from their couch so, thanks to VR platforms, it was possible to tour museums, global attractions such as Machu Picchu, or luxurious resorts in the Maldives without leaving the comfort of their own homes. Of course, such trips cannot replace the joys of really traveling through the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings that awaken in new destinations, but they are a decent replacement when you want to get a feeling of a place you're interested in while at home. Virtual tours are great when you want to tour a hotel room, facilities, or a resort before making a reservation. Travel agencies are using them more and more to promote excursions and show you what to expect on them so they can make it easy for you to choose and make a final decision.

Digital nomads becoming mainstream

©

Working remotely became the norm for many during the pandemic, and digital nomads became mainstream. After a lot of research that confirmed the increased productivity of employees working from home, companies continued to encourage employees to work remotely. Due to that trend, many employees have taken advantage of not having to be stuck in a certain location and they often travel even to the other side of the world, where they continue fulfilling their work commitments. Of course, with the difference of not only being served breakfast every morning, but they also spend their time before and after work enjoying plenty of benefits - wellness, swimming in a pool, nature walks, exploring new destinations and cultures... Hotels and restaurants are catering to that new wave of travelers more and more.

We spent most of 2020 and 2021 in front of television screens, and that has greatly influenced our choice of destinations we would like to visit. Interesting and attractive filming locations, which we admired on the small screens, are now at the top of our bucket lists, and we would love to visit the places where our favorite popular movies and shows were filmed. For example, fans of the legendary "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy can finally travel to New Zealand, and those who couldn't stop watching "Game of Thrones" can visit King's Landing - Dubrovnik (Croatia), and those who want to search for the Holy Grail like Indiana Jones in the movie "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" can head to Petra (Jordan).

Many wellness retreats offer a wider range of activities, and besides the usual treatments, they also offer, for example, foraging for food in the wild, such as various berries, mushrooms, plants, etc. They also offer meditation and forest bathing - a Japanese tradition (shinrin-yoku), which entails relaxing in nature, or walking through the forest where we completely immerse ourselves with nature, its sounds, aromas, flavors... 

ravel reports, blogs, web sites, social media... nowadays, there are a lot of ways and channels to tell the story of a destination and share experiences. Still, one of the most attractive ways of presenting a destination, with the aim of motivating you to visit, is a highquality tourism film. Representatives of tourism institutions worldwide know that well, along with all those in the business of tourism, so every year they try to create attractive videos with which in just a few minutes they want to intrigue and entice you to visit their destination and take advantage of the tourism services or products they offer. The importance of tourism films for the promotion of destinations, but also the mentioned tourism services

and products, is also confirmed by the many festivals of tourism films all over the world where they not only show, but also hand out awards for the best tourism films and audio-visual productions that promote tourism in various aspects (travel destinations - cities, regions, countries; adventure tourism, nautical tourism, congress tourism, hotels and resorts, sports tourism...). Their goal is to get as a high a position as possible on the lists of the International Committee of Tourism Film Festivals, CIFFT, with headquarters in Vienna, to fight for the CIFFT Grand Prix that is awarded annually to the best tourism film in the world at the "Festival of Festivals". Croatia also has its own well-known festival of tourism films, Zagreb TourFilm Festival.

It is a true challenge for the members of the judging panel to decide which tourism film deserves the title of the best amongst the wide selection of films. We saw that for ourselves while we watched many films that competed for the attention of tourists worldwide while we were preparing for this article. Here is a list of just a few that caught our eye...

No Joy in Life is Small

©

The main focus of the new tourism campaign of the Spanish region of Andalusia is the endless source of emotion. With Antonio Banderas as narrator, and the motto of "No Joy in Life is Small", the narration takes place through music and dance, that is, a musical that takes place throughout Andalusia. The creators of the film describe it as a sort of answer to the current events in the world - a time of constant change after the effects of the pandemic, with the need for hope and optimism. Attractive, elegant, unforgettable... perhaps those words best describe this video that was awarded first place in 2022 in the "Regional" category on the CIFFT, International Committee of Tourism Film Festivals, website.

No Drama. The Swiss tourism ambassador, tennis player Roger Federer, appears in the awardwinning humorous film by the country's National Tourism Board. Legendary Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro also plays a part in the short film, as Federer tries to convince him to join in and be part of a promotional film about Switzerland. In order to convince him, he sends him a short, idyllic film about his country. However, De Niro declines the invitation with the explanation that Switzerland is "too perfect, with kind people, charming towns, and green valleys", but that there is absolutely no drama (which he focuses on in his acting). At the end, De Niro tells him to call Tom Hanks.

The phenomenon of the midnight sun A small sailboat with red sails sailing among the floating icebergs in the large Disko Bay off the west coast of Greenland was photographed during the season of the midnight sun. Yes, that's exactly what it looks like when the sun doesn't drop below the horizon and tirelessly, 24 hours a day, illuminates the sky above the largest island in the world. The natural phenomenon can be experienced during the summer months in areas north of the Arctic Circle, and south of the Antarctic Circle. The duration of the time the sun doesn't set depends on the geographic position of the location. Besides on Greenland, the midnight sun (or polar day) can be seen in the Arctic Circle in Alaska and Iceland, as well as in northern parts of Canada, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, along with parts of Russia. The opposite phenomenon is when the sun doesn't rise at all, which is called polar night. 

Salar de Uyuni The South American country of Bolivia is home to the largest salt lake in the world, Salar de Uyuni, which stretches out over a total of ten thousand square kilometers. Nowadays, the photogenic lake, which was formed after a prehistoric lake dried up, attracts tourists and photographers from all over the world. Thanks to its thick salt crust and incredibly flat surface, during the drought season (May-November) the lake becomes a trail for unforgettable jeep drive tours. The tours will also take you to the center of the lake where there are several islands, the peaks of long-dormant volcanoes. On one of them you can even see giant cactuses, which is a truly impressive sight. Early birds will manage to get fantastic photos of the lake since sunrise offers a priceless view of the lake (like in the photo). The rainy season (December-March) presents another attractive side of the lake. The layer of water on the flat, white surface of the lake then turns into the largest mirror in the world, which then reflects the sky. That is another sight to be eternalized by a camera, just like in November - when flocks of pink flamingoes walk on the lake. 

..................

In 2021, with the aim of making tourism the initiator of rural development, the World Tourism Organization launched the "Best Tourism Villages" initiative. More than 70 villages in nearly 40 countries worldwide have been named the best tourism village to date. Besides being evaluated as excellent examples of rural tourism destinations, the villages that were awarded the title of the best nurture innovation and sustainability in all forms - economic, social, and environmental. An additional 40 villages were chosen to participate in the Upgrade Program, which includes expert mentoring and the possibility for networking. Applications for the Best Tourism Villages 2023 initiative are open until June 23, and the winners will be announced in late 2023.
