Tiny Steps

Location: Majorna, Gothenburg, Sweden Status: Completed Master’s Thesis Project (individual work) Discourse: small intervention design, landscape architecture for children, child friendly city, biophilic approach

The thesis explores small intervention design using biophilic approach as the tool to create child-friendly city in the urban element scale. The thesis combines the research and design methods where some participatory method, dialogues, surveys, and workshops are conducted. The intention of the thesis is to propose a process where there are combination of regulation-planning and design proposal to create a better city for children. The site is located in a heritage area of Gothenburg that is Majorna where there is a high population of children and large number of schools but faces the challenges where the area is developed more for cars than for human - based on the dialogues and surveys. The thesis addresses challenges of urbanization today and the disconnected relationship between human and nature as an impact of the car and gadget-dependant generation. The design aims to enhance relationship between children and nature through walking experience in their daily life by stimulating interaction with nature. This idea also aims to create ripple effect by introducing nature at the young age, children’s awareness of environmental and social sustainability starts earlier in their childhood, in hopes to create a sustainable future for all.

REN - A Circular Consolidation Center in Frihamnen

Location: Gothenburg, Sweden Client: Ă„lvstranden Utveckling Partners: GXN/3XN Architects, Chalmers University of Technology Status: First Prize, Sustainable Building Competition

More than just a city’s logistic center, this project is challenging the issue in a bigger context which includes urbanization, densification, and environmental issues (air and water pollution, lack of green space in an urban context). This proposal introduces innovative nature-based solutions while at the same time injecting social and innovation aspects by providing home and working spaces for the inhabitants in Gothenburg both existing and upcoming. The design proposal won for its comprehensive approach in the design process and choices. The proposal succeeded to solve the complex problem within an an urban context - by adding open green spaces and place to live and work - to the building scale by applying small scale sustainable strategies such as rain water catchment and filtration system using hydroponics, and food waste processing for producing nutrition for plants. Team : Alberta Maria Titis Rum Kuntari (IDN), Gheorghe Maleca (ROU), Marie Breysse (FRA), Joel Montgomery-Claesson (SWE), Nils Claesson (SWE).

Energy Efficient Office at Gullbergsvass

Location: Gothenburg, Sweden Jury: Kjellgren Kaminsky Architects, Solkompaniet, RISE, Chalmers University of Technology Status: Second Prize, Student Challenge - Building Design Lab

The challenge is to propose a facade transformation of an existing office building to achieve better building performance with the main focus on the energy efficiency. The specific challenge is to integrate solar shading with photovoltaic cells in the facade. As this building is located in the waterfront area with prominent heritage and has a high-quality existing brick facade, the concept of the design is using a subtle and delicate transformation to its strong identity. The design shows two types of transformation on the first to 4th floor and the top floor. For the bottom floors, glass cassettes are integrated with the PV sheets, while on the top facade we propose a glass facade with brick-sized PV which is installed with gradient following the sun radiation. In order to reach efficient building performance, simulations using IDA-ICE, DIVA and Ladybug were conducted as the tools for reach the optimized design. Then, the result of the simulation is translated into design using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper script. The design won the second prize based on this motivation by the jury : “A professionally visualized solution with excellent aesthetical qualities where the two different, yet coherent parts of the shading, activate the building’s expression in an intriguing way.” Team : Alberta Maria Titis Rum Kuntari (IDN), Gheorghe Maleca (ROU), Joel MontgomeryClaesson (SWE), Nils Claesson (SWE).

Environmental Study Center

Location: Yogyakarta, Indonesia Client: Universitas Sanata Dharma Yogyakarta, Indonesia Status: approved, on hold for construction

This Environment Study Center is a public facility to learn and discover nature through direct observation. The site of this building is an open space with tall teak trees planted inside. The concept of this environmental study center is to provide a space which allows the users to see, feel, hear, breathe, smell, and discover nature directly. The shape of the building is inspired by the tall teak trees which have straight, thin, and strong tree trunks. The design is also using natural lights and fresh air. This design is also using a tropical architecture concept in Indonesia which is called “Rumah Panggung” - translated as “Stage House”. It is a building concept which is light, airy, and suitable for Indonesia’s humid climate with high average temperature. The design also does not block the connection between nature to nature and nature to human. Natural local materials are used, such as red clay bricks, clay roof, and recycled teak wood for the interior. Team : Alberta Maria Titis Rum Kuntari, FX. Eddy Arinto, M.Arch (IDN)
