In just two hours, on the night of September 12th, 1977, 11 inches of rain poured down on an already soaked ground turning the typically calm Brush Creek into a raging torrent, washing away everything in its path. The damage was devastating. Trees, cars, debris of varying shapes and sizes, and piles of mud carried by the storm waters were deposited at the Country Club Plaza downstream. Estimates crested 100 million dollars in damage, incomparable to the twenty-five people who lost their lives in the storm’s wake.

When the flood waters receded, it was all hands on deck at TIVOL. Side by side, we were on hands and knees sifting through mud, glass, and broken cases in search of jewelry, documents, and other important items that might have survived. I vividly remember finding an old-fashioned credit card machine in our store that belonged to Bennett Schneider’s, a lovely book and stationary store that was a block away.

We were so grateful to the Red Cross and Lamar’s Donuts who set up stations to feed Plaza employees during those long days picking up the pieces from what could have been the end of business for us all. Since that awful wet night, TIVOL, the Country Club Plaza, and Kansas City as a whole, haven’t just recov ered…we’ve thrived. Resiliency means coming back from loss; taking a hit, but getting back on your feet.

TIVOL salutes the Country Club Plaza, and Kansas City, for overcoming immense adversity, rebuilding, and improving our beloved hometown landmark. Sometimes, the most beautiful objects that are right in front of us are taken for granted because we have them and see them every day. Kansas City has a rare jewel under our noses in the heart of downtown. Built in the 1930’s, Municipal Auditorium is a classic example of Art Deco architecture, and one of the most iconic and beautiful buildings in KC.

On December 1, 1935, Municipal Auditorium opened as a multi-purpose treasure in downtown Kansas City. It features four unique special event venues, The Music Hall, Little Theater, Arena and Exhibition Hall. It emphasizes curving forms and long, horizontal lines with exquisite art deco examples throughout and is regarded as one of the most important architectural works in the United States. Almost 90 years after welcoming its first guests, Municipal Auditorium hosts music groups, artists, sporting events, and confer ences for the influential citizens who select the space for their important moments. This issue of our TIVOL magazine highlights the stunning space and we hope you enjoy a glimpse inside in each page featuring models with beautiful TIVOL jewelry posing against this magnificent backdrop.

As we were putting together different ideas for this issue of our magazine, I was so excited landing on different spot lights of legacy and resilience surrounding our community, clients, and TIVOL. My brain started to swirl on great ideas of what I would write for Hunter’s Club! I can write about our family and different struggles we have had and overcom ing them through the years. Or I can write about the lasting legacy of jewelry and gemstones leave within a family and through the generations. How about writing about the formation of gemstones over thousands or millions of years and the resilience it takes to withstand the elements?! I was so excited at the many possibilities...but alas, our marketing department is insistent I write more about watches. Don’t you all want to experience the breadth of my knowledge? I am more than just a watch brain! Unfortunately, my opinion lost to the unwavering stance of a few others.

One of the most impressive aspects to me about luxury timepieces is that, properly cared for, they too can last gener ations. We often have clients purchase a watch to wear at the birth of their child, knowing that they will one day pass it down to them. Each scuff, scratch and ding that ends up on a watch tells the story of where it has been! And when the time comes to have a timepiece properly serviced, the story continues, and the life of that watch is extended.

The process of servicing a watch is incredibly thorough. Disassembly, cleaning, replacement of parts, lubrication, refin ishing, quality control. Every single timepiece, whether serviced in house in our state-of-the-art watch service center, or by the respective brand, is intensely scrutinized to achieve the highest level of timekeeping possible. It is only through this care and attention to detail that a timepiece can survive generations.

Next time you are purchasing a fine timepiece from TIVOL, think of all the hands that have touched the interior move ment, case and bracelet, in order to bring it into your life. Think of the story it tells through its natural wear. Think of the future servicing to prolong its legacy through the generations. It takes a team of scientists, technicians, designers, and artisans to craft these unique micro machines.

Watchmaker certification requires thousands of hours of study that includes benchtime and theory. From there, new makers begin in entry-level positions and work their way up to become master watchmakers years later. Watchmakers are skilled, technical craftsmen who are devoted to highly detailed complication in timepieces. The creation of a time piece is a true art form that requires a steadiness of hand and years of dedication. Therein lies the complexity of time…

Those who wish to travel back in time need only step inside the beautiful halls of Municipal Audi torium for a glimpse of what life was like in 1935. The masterful architecture, vibrant works of art, and thoughtful detailing throughout each square foot of the space pay tribute to the thousands of people who worked to construct the building that has since played host to the countless memories made together with strangers, friends, and loved ones. It is, afterall, the moments we share that give our lives meaning and inspire us to build a future that will withstand the test of time.

What arose in the aftermath of a fire that destroyed Kansas City’s first convention hall protected more than 2,000 families from the financial heat of the Great Depression by providing employment for Municipal construction in 1934. Its grand opening on December 1st of the following year signified the resilience, grit, and determination of Kansas City and its people. Each room of the multi-functional space houses the collective stories of the visitors who’ve spent time inside. If the walls could talk, what would they share?

Would they recount the air of hope felt by those who clung to the words of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the keynote speaker for the building’s dedication inside arena in October 1936? Or would they reminisce about the absolute excitement felt by screaming fans when Elvis played in May 1956? Perhaps they would share the feeling of wonder experienced by the sweet children who saw Barney come to life on stage or when fans delighted in the beautiful friendship of Elphie and Glenda when Wicked toured the Midwest. A look into the significant spaces, meaningful moments, and records of resilience that transformed lives and shaped Kansas City into the vibrant community it is today.

What started as a river port settlement in the mid-nineteenth century has since been the backdrop for countless mem ories, stories of hope, of loss, of change, of growth, and of a love for a town by the millions of people who have been lucky enough to call this place home. Officially named after the merger between Westport and the City of Kansas in 1889, Kansas City’s transformation over the last 133 years has made it one of the most wonderful places in the Mid west. You’re invited to explore the events, edifices, and elements that breathe life into our home, the place we know and love. This is Kansas City through the years.

MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM

Part of the ten-year plan that fostered tremendous growth in the city, Municipal Auditorium opened its doors in the mid-1930s as a multi-functional facility. Its ornate architecture, artful imagery, and art-deco inspired lines have stood out as one of the most well built structures of its time. Inside its hallowed walls are the stories of men, women, and children whose collective memories have left them captivated, in awe, and inspired by the vibrant entertainment-arts that have been on display inside.

FUN FACT: Although there are no deaths on record inside, Municipal’s Music Hall is claimed to be one of the most haunted places in Missouri. Patrons claim to witness apparitions wearing clothings from the building’s earliest performance era walking the halls around performance time. Perhaps they’re there to bear witness to one final performance?

UNION STATION

After a flood destroyed the original train station in the West Bottoms, Kansas City decided to relocate and rebuild. From that venture, Union Station first opened its doors in 1914 and has served as a historic hub since. Home to world class Science City Museum and the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium, Union Station offers a variety of activities and options to visitors of all ages.

FUN FACT: The Union Station Massacre, an attempted rescue of John Nash by fellow gangsters in June 1933, exposed the deeply seeded criminal un derbelly that existed during the Pendergast era in Kansas City. Although the mission was unsuccessful, it remains one of KC’s most notorious moments.

CITY MARKET

What began as a trading post and small market commerce site in the mid-1800s has become one of the city’s oldest operational open-air centers. Its vibrant history and eclectic mix of merchants have wel comed a variety of interesting folks in the near century and a half since it first opened.

FUN FACT: Jackson County’s original court house was just a stone’s throw from City Market until the 1930’s. Notorious robber and gang leader Jesse James was known to frequent City Market. One has to wonder if James wished he’d had his day in court instead of losing his life to Robert Ford, a member of his own gang, seeking reward money in 1882.

COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA

Planned by J.C. Nichols, the Coun try Club Plaza was the first planned suburban shopping district in the United States. Designed in Moor ish Revival Style, the architecture echoes and includes elements from Seville, Spain. Guests can see elements from its intricate design throughout the space. TIVOL’s flag ship store, located on the southeast side of the Country Club Plaza, opened in 1951.

FUN FACT: The Country Club Plaza cele brates 100 years in 2023, making it one of the oldest and most treasured shopping centers in the United States.

THE JAZZ DISTRICT

18th & Vine is not only known for its vibrant culture and delicious foodie fare, it’s also home to the iconic jazz era of Kansas City’s heart. Notable musicians began their careers in Kansas City, paving the way for musicians to make a name for them selves in the following decades. 18th & Vine isn’t just a significant space for the history of jazz, the neighborhood is also home to many of Kansas City’s most promi nent black owned businesses.

FUN FACT: Although deeply rooted in historic significance, the 18th & Vine District wasn’t added to the list of historic registries until 1991.

CENTRAL LIBRARY

In 1897, twenty-four years after being founded, the Kansas City Public Library (KCPL) opened its third location at 9th and Locust in downtown KC. The building, which was constructed over the course of three years from a $200,000 bond proposal, was a major step in providing literacy to locals. KCPL became a free resource for citizens just one year later.

FUN FACT: The main library, which was built to be modern and innovative in the late 1800s, is now a historic landmark treasured by the community.

WARD PARKWAY

As part of the Country Club District in the early 20th century, Ward Parkway is iconic to Kansas City. Centered along the parkway, in the median, are ornate sculp tures that were hand-picked by J.C. Nichols from Europe. The Country Club District, which was built between 1906 and 1950, was the nation’s largest planned community in the United States.

FUN FACT: Abhorrent restrictive cove nants in the earliest documents for the development placed limits on the deeds limiting homeowners to specific racial and religious parameters for the transfer of ownership. The Supreme Court overturned these deed restrictions in 1948 and further limited prejudice with the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

THE MISSOURI RIVER

Part of the Lewis and Clark Expedi tion of 1804, “Big Muddy” is North America’s second longest river and, arguably, the reason Kansas City ex ists today. The Missouri River begins its journey in Western Montana, flowing across, over, and down 2,341 miles before flowing into its gateway to the East, just north of St. Louis.

FUN FACT: The Missouri river, alone, stands as the 2nd largest in the United States. As part of the Mississippi river system, however, it comes in first. Proof that we’re made stron ger when we join together.

KANSAS CITY ZOO

Lions, Tigers, and Bears - Oh, my!

The Kansas City Zoo first opened its gates in December 1909 as a way to connect people to the nat ural world around them. After a slow start over the first forty years in business, the Zoo began incor porating family friendly elements in the 1940s that have since been enjoyed by children of all ages.

FUN FACT: The Kansas City Zoo has since been recognized as a top zoological park, combining education and preserving life. It is enjoyed by thousands of patrons each year.

TRUMAN LIBRARY

Remodeled in 2021, the Truman Presidential Library and Museum pays tribute to the midwestern native whose roots were planted in the heart of Independence, MO. Harry Truman’s rise to influence began during the Pendergast era in Kansas City as he climbed the ladder of significance that ultimately landed him the highest office in the land, President of the United States.

FUN FACT: Harry Truman worked as a teenager inside a local ice cream and soda shop that remains operational to date in downtown on the Indepen dence Square.

NEGRO LEAGUES BASEBALL MUSEUM

Privately funded with a building near 18th & Vine, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum was founded in 1990 as a way to pay tribute to the incredible players who overcame adversity during periods of racial di vide. Honoring some of the world’s most incredible players, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum high lights the history of the sport and the significance cultural prejudice played in the early 1900s.

FUN FACT: The first Colored Championship was played in 1903, just three years before legendary ball player Satchel Page was born.

WORLDS OF FUN

Designed in an effort to allow guests to travel the world in a day - from the comfort of Kansas CityWorlds of Fun first opened up for guests in 1973. To commemorate the opening of its very own theme park, Kansas City built a colorful water tower that now serves as an icon of the town.

FUN FACT: Sports fans who enjoy the thrilling rides and exciting entertainment available inside the theme park will be delighted to learn that Worlds of Fun was started by none other than sports icon and Kansas City Chiefs' founder Lamar Hunt.

LOOSE PARK

The third largest in KC, Loose Park was once home to Kansas City Country Club, a space designated for residents of the city’s Country Club District. After relocating the golf course to Mission Hills in 1925, the land was purchased by Ella Loose who transitioned it into a park to honor her husband, Jacob, in 1926.

FUN FACT: The land was once occupied by Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. Markers from the period can be found throughout the park.

NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art opened its doors on December 11, 1933 and has since been home to beautiful exhibits and works of art spanning human history around the globe. Development of the museum spanned over twenty years and serves as a timeless reminder of how we are all connected.

FUN FACT: The Shuttlecocks, which first arrived at Sculpture Park in 1994, created controversy, due to their size and appearance, in the community. Now, nearly three decades later, they are seen as iconic Kansas City, treasured by all as a permanent fixture on the museum lawn.

DOWNTOWN AIRPORT

Nearly 700 acres of land sep arates downtown Kansas City from the communities that make up KC’s northland (Riverside, North Kansas City, and Parkville). What was once a massive hub for travel, the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport is now home to private jets, small commercial cargo options, and the National Airline Museum - which houses many of TWA’s old artifacts.

FUN FACT: The downtown airport was dedicated in 1927 by Charles Lindber gh…long before the largest airplane was ever conceived - the Airbus a380which seats over 850 passengers. 1920’s aircraft typically seated fewer than twenty passengers.

KANSAS CITY POWER AND LIGHT BUILDING

Perhaps one of the most notable in downtown, the Kansas City Power and Light building was one of the town’s first skyscrapers. The massive 36-story building was built, in part, to provide much needed employ ment for a struggling economy. Completed in 1931, the building was an iconic symbol of Art Deco architecture and remains an exam ple of resilience.

FUN FACT: Lights from the peak of the building, nearly 100 feet into the air, could be seen glowing like jewels for miles around.

JACKSON COUNTY COURTHOUSE

Jackson County’s original court house was located at 2nd and Main until it was destroyed by a tornado in 1886. The new court house relocated south, until Kan sas City’s populace outgrew the space and construction on a new building began. The Art Deco style courthouse was dedicated in 1934 and still stand today.

FUN FACT: The Courthouse was built at the instruction of Tom Pendergast, who stabilized the city's development and in frastructure. The lighter side of his legacy highlights how his decisions helped save Kansas City from the damaging impacts of the Great Depression by providing much needed employment and resources for those struggling to survive.

LIBERTY MEMORIAL

Built as a symbol of strength and sacrifice, the Liberty Memorial opened in 1926 and stands to honor the fallen of World War I. A climb atop the tower provides 360 degrees of stunning Missouri and Kansas skyline stretching miles from the centrally located structure.

FUN FACT: The National World War I Museum hosts their annual “Taps at the Tower” each summer, an emotionally charged experience that calls guests to pause and reflect on the significance and impact war has on us all.

NATIONAL WORLD WAR I MUSEUM

Officially recognized by Congress in 2004, the National World War I Museum highlights The Great War, a pivotal period in history. Although the United States did not enter the war until it was nearly over, it remains one of the most signifi cant periods in American history.

FUN FACT: Poppies underneath the clear bridge between the entrance and the museum symbolize the millions of lives lost during the war and project hope for a better future for the world.

The BBQ Capital of the World has been lovingly nicknamed through the years. From Paris of the Plains to Cowtown, the city is known for bringing life and vibrancy to the Midwest. For most of us, the nickname "home" best describes how important KC truly is… the love of its people, the collective resilience, and the unwavering commitment to community make Kansas City such a special spot on the map.

POWER OF WATER:

As light rain started to fall on September 12, 1977, in Kansas City, the Country Club Plaza was alight with energy as customers stopped by the store to share well-wishes to TIVOL’s matriarch, Mollie Tivol, and her granddaughter, Cathy Tivol. The pair were lucky enough to share a birthday and the family planned to gather for a celebratory dinner that evening. None of them suspected that rainstorms would soon overtake Brush Creek and lead to catastrophic flooding in the area the following day.

The rainfall raised the level of Brush Creek to the edge of its retaining wall at the border of the Country Club Plaza. The downpour increased just before 8pm that evening, growing concern for many of the local tenants: flooding was imminent. “I remember leaving my birthday dinner to come and check on the store,” says Cathy, “it was not good.” The area was overwhelmed with a total of 16 inches of rainwater, leading to a swell as high as 15 feet, rushing water 20mph in some areas, and causing catastrophic water damage throughout the local homes and businesses.

The next day, September 13, 1977, Patrick Switlik and his father, both jewelers at TIVOL, arrived at the store to assess the damage and begin clean-up. The floodwater had receded enough for them to enter through the front door – “the waterline at the door was 5 feet high, up to my shoulder,” recalls Patrick. He remembers being unable to get to his jew eler’s bench because water remained at the top of the stairwell to their basement-level shop. “It took two days to pump the water out of the basement,” he states, and when they could safely enter the space, the real work began.

The cinderblock walls that had partitioned off each tenant’s space had filled with water and had either fallen over or been washed aside. “You could walk the city block through the basement of the stores,” Patrick remembers. Although waterlogged, TIVOL’s vault remained intact, protecting each client’s personal items and much of the store’s inventory. The sediment left by the recessed water would take the next six weeks to filter out of the space and comb through for salvageable items. “It was like nothing I’d ever seen before - or since,” says Patrick.

In the coming weeks, the community came together to help each other. Cathy recollects finding a credit card machine that had floated into TIVOL’s basement from a nearby book and stationary store and returning it to them. She and Patrick remember long hours of clean-up throughout the entire store with a goal to re-open for the holidays. Cathy reminisces how local food merchants supplied breakfast items, boxed lunches and snacks. “It was heartwarming to see businesses, including the Salvation Army, pitching in to keep us well-fed.”

On the 45th anniversary of this life-altering event, we are reminded of the resiliency of our store and its community. We hold those in our hearts who experienced unimaginable loss due to the flooding and remain forever grateful for the people who have assisted, supported, and encouraged us along the way.

CULTIVATING A legacy of kindness

On Christmas Eve 2020, I sat for breakfast adjacent to a man inside a street corner cafe at River Market. That morning was significant for me. Coming off the heels of splitting up with my (now) ex-husband, it was our first attempt at giving one another space during the holidays with our daughter. The season was hard on all of us - closing out a year that transformed our world and shifted our focus inward. It was a time in our lives that inspired reflection, encouraged us to discover the things that were most important, and forced us to face hard truths. I knew, leading into that morning, that I wanted to pour some love and ener gy into the world. Despite the personal challenges I’d experienced in the months prior, if I’d learned just one thing from all of it, it was that we all faced monsters and were united together in our humanity. In the weeks leading up to this particular morning, I’d been collecting things…

Bags, blankets, small toiletries, hand warmers, masks, gloves, scarves, and gift cards to carefully assemble for distribution among the most displaced citizens in Kansas City Christmas Eve morning. River Market was the first stop that day. The frigid morning temperatures made their way into my bones and inspired me to take a reprieve inside that small cafe on the corner for a hot cup of coffee and some warm eats. The man at the table adjacent to me was old. Not the kind of old that you get from natural aging through the years but, rather, the old that stems from the unfairness of the world. Even though my experiences in trav eling had taught me not to create narratives for people based on external factors, there was something about Adjacent Man’s energy and presence that hinted at the long, hard journey that had led him into that day.

I decided to quietly pay for his breakfast, handing the server enough cash to cover the bill. Even if my original assessment of him wasn’t accurate, the meal was a secret gift that I wanted to give to the stranger in the cafe. Realizing that his ticket had been taken care of, Adjacent Man demanded the opportunity to offer thanks to the responsible table. This pivotal moment is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

This adjacent stranger started to speak about his life. He described his makeshift home, on a ledge between two buildings, and the critters who came to life each night while he attempted to sleep. He told me about the nifty tricks he used to survive cold nights, finding a way into the emergency room of a nearby hospital for evaluation. He shared that he was dismissed at 5:00 that morning by the hospital staff and had made his way back “home” where he’d managed to collect just enough money for breakfast. These details about his life were presented as simple facts - nothing more, nothing less - and they were the least striking thing about my conversation with him that day.

He told me of his past, of the family he once had. He shared the simple joys experienced throughout each day and of his goals for the future. Only a few years prior, he had accepted his fate as the old, homeless man whose story contin ued on the streets, on the edges of Kansas City. Many questions swirled through my mind as he spoke - like why didn’t the man just find a place inside a shelter - filtered through my lens of comfort. Rather than shift the conversation to fill the void of details in my brain, I offered this man the space he needed to tell his story. Within the safety of that space, he began to outline his short term life goals. He said he wanted to live to see Christmas morning.

He told me that if he was able to make it to Christmas morning, he would set his sights on New Year’s Eve. If he could make it to the close of the year, he would be satisfied with his life. Seven days of life lived…A simple goal for most, yet so seemingly insurmountable in his eyes. Our conversation ended with casual wishes extended for a Merry Christmas. With each visit back to the area in the months that followed I looked for Adjacent Man but never saw him again.

We carry with us the stories, moments, and acts of resilience that define us. These are the things that shape our thoughts, words, and actions and shift our perception of the world around us. All too often, this perception is filtered through the lens of our own understanding, limited by the fact that we are just one of the nearly eight billion in our collective human race. How frequently do we encounter those adjacent to our own lives, the people who exist in the spaces of our community? These are the moments that have inspired me in my own humanity and have led me to intentionally seek out the same in my interactions with the world. It’s what led me to TIVOL.

It has been a lifetime since TIVOL first opened its doors in downtown Kansas City. The world has a new population now and so much has changed. Yet somehow, so much has remained the same. TIVOL’s legacy was founded on the values of kindness, generosity, honesty, and respect for others. This people-first approach is a large part of the success of the company - but it only offers a glimpse into what truly makes it special - TIVOL’s unwavering love for others, evidenced by the wonderful people who’ve chosen to call this space home.

Kwiat and Tivol: A RESILIENT RELATIONSHIP

In 1907, Sam Kwiat opened a diamond shop in downtown New York City. In 1910, Charles Tivol opened a jewelry shop in downtown Kansas City. Two recent immigrants, driven by a dream, rewarded by hard work, and renowned for their integrity and expertise. Their families would go on to create a fruitful working partnership that has lasted for more than 50 years.

Sam Kwiat and his son, David, perfected the art and science of diamond cutting. They knew that although a diamond’s color and clarity are important, but nothing is more critical than cut. A diamond only releases its full brilliance when it is cut to the most exacting specifications. Every angle must be perfect, the proportions just right. And, because a Kwiat diamond is cut to its widest possible diameter, it looks bigger than other diamonds of the same carat weight.

Following in their grandfather’s and great-grandfather’s footsteps, Kwiat continues to maintain the world’s strictest stan dards for diamond cuts — criteria that surpass even those of the GIA. Together again, TIVOL welcomed treasured clients and friends for an evening of food, laughter, and fun to showcase Robert Procop’s stunning new collaboration with Brooke Shields: Luminous. Ignited by a shared passion for the celes tial skies, the long-time friends worked to create a collection that celebrates the connectedness of the sun, stars, plan ets, and inhabitants that live beneath them all. Hosted in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s beautiful Rozelle Court, TIVOL’s event featured the artfully designed jewelry, and an opportunity to mingle with the designer, Robert Procop.

Their second collaboration, Brooke and Robert’s Luminous collection is dedicated to helping improve the lives and futures of women. The two partnered with Women in Need (WIN) of New York, the city’s largest provider of support services and shelter to women and their families. Proceeds from the line will provide funding and resources to those most in need, making each piece unique in its aesthetic, value and significance. The enchanting evening honored the mission behind the collaboration, while gathering together friends, colleagues, and community members - and it was…Luminous.

The morning alarm chimes, waking me from my peaceful slumber at 4:45am. I get up, get ready, and head to the gym for that 5:15am class that feels simultaneously too early and oh-so-good. It was nearing Valentine’s Day in 2015, and Kacie McDonnell was reporting on a Galentine’s Day package for a local television network. The piece featured TIVOL on the Country Club Plaza, Gary Pener, Store Manager, and company Vice President, Hunter Tivol McGrath, were involved in the production. As a sports enthusiast and local reporter, she was well-known to the TIVOL staff through her career, connections and personal history with the store. Gary and Hunter, ever the matchmakers for jewelry and timepieces with their clients, decided to try their hands at matchmaking.

The two discussed introducing Kacie to their friend and client, Eric Hosmer. Kacie remembers the moment Gary and Hunter approached her: “I thought what are they throwing at me?” Nevertheless, she agreed to meet this baseball player client of theirs – a nice guy from Miami who had been playing for the Kansas City Royals since 2011. Kacie remembers loosely engaging with Eric over the course of the next few months, as they kept missing opportunities to meet. The night before opening day 2015, Eric called and sent her tickets to the next day’s game. She attended and the two fell into an easy relationship.

“We are big cheerleaders for each other – my dreams are his and his are mine,” Kacie states. The two grounded each other in the coming months as the Royals advanced to the 2015 post season and won The World Series. “Where Kacie goes, champagne flows,” according to Eric. They enjoyed every moment together over the next few years: celebrating career successes, traveling and finding themselves most at home with each other, their families and their friends. “We enjoy blending our friend groups, connecting the people we love and watching their relationships with each other grow,” Kacie explains.

It seems only fitting that in August 2020, Eric reached out to Kacie’s sister, Isabelle, and Gary at TIVOL for their help with an engagement ring for Kacie. “I’m like Nancy Drew, so the fact that I didn’t figure it out is a tarnish on my resume,” Kacie chuckles. Eric, Gary and Isabelle took time to carefully source the ring of Kacie’s dreams: a 5.55 carat emerald cut diamond set with a pair of tapered baguettes in a yellow gold mounting. Meanwhile, Eric planned a proposal during his birthday dinner at the Versace Mansion that October.

“Eric was acting weird the whole night,” Kacie recalls of their time at the Versace Mansion. He was holding her hand strangely and not acting himself. He eventually twirled her around, planted on one knee and stated, “It’s time for you to be a Hosmer!” Kacie was thrilled and shocked, “I never thought he would propose in public!” She delightedly agreed, and the two began to plan their lives together.

Due to baseball season, their options for a wedding date were limited. In Kacie’s family, tradition calls for the hosting of celebratory occasions around holidays. The thought being that people generally have extra time off of work and more time to spend together enjoying each other. At a friend’s recommendation, they visited The Breakers in Palm Beach, about an hour from their home. They immediately loved the event space and moved forward with wedding plans, Ka cie embracing her role as a ”Breaker’s Bride.”

They were married at The Breakers on New Year’s Eve 2021 surrounded by their close friends and family. They ex changed yellow gold and diamond bands: hers an eternity band with twelve emerald cut diamonds set east to west in a yellow gold mounting and his an 8.5mm diamond and yellow gold beveled edge band. The celebration began on Wednesday and culminated with the wedding that Friday night, leaving everyone the weekend to recover and travel home. “It was three days and nights that we will never, ever forget,” Kacie reminisces. The largest table at the wedding was full of Kansas City Royals alumni – a testament to the bonds the couple have made and maintained during their years together.

The connections they create are easily cultivated beyond the baseball field, outside the camera lens and in their every day lives. “We feel so comfortable with Gary,” Kacie declares, “the staff at TIVOL sets the bar and continues to raise it. It doesn’t stop with the purchase: it is a relationship and it's ongoing.” Kacie shares that her family has had an old time piece restored with TIVOL’s watch shop and her ring is cleaned and checked regularly by their jewelers. She remains appreciative of everyone who has provided support to her and Eric over the years, and it is clear in their interactions with Gary and the TIVOL staff. “Our son will be getting his engagement ring from TIVOL when it is time!”

Over the last year, the Hosmers have encountered many firsts as a married couple. Kacie surprised Eric with a onesie that reads, “It is time for you to be a dad”, echoing his line from the night he asked her to marry him. As they welcomed their first child this fall, Kacie curates a home in Boston and Eric settles into a rhythm with his new team, the Boston Red Sox. The TIVOL team looks forward to welcoming the newest Hosmer into our stores, and we remain grateful for friend ship, trust and the reminder that TIVOL’s greatest treasures are its clients.

i'll have a gimlet

Those who knew him best remember THE CARD. Carefully presented, at the time of his order, to bartenders and servers at restaurants and events. Harold Tivol's recipe card outlined the five basic ingredients that made up his favorite drink. Scotch, dry vermouth, bitters, two olives, and ice. "I'll have a gimlet," he'd say.

There are seven core spirits that go into making any one of the thousands of variations of cocktails enjoyed across each continent of the world. And yet, for most of us, there is typically one tried and true recipe we just know we'll enjoy... no matter what. For Harold Tivol, that was a Dry Rob Roy with a splash of bitters and two olives, on the rocks. That was his gimlet.

WHY CALL IT A GIMLET?

A traditional gimlet, made with a liberal amount of lime juice mixed with gin, first entered the alcohol scene in the late 1920s. By then, there were already dozens of iconic drinks and count less variations to please just about any post-pro hibition palet. So why, exactly, did Harold refer to his recipe - made with scotch - a gimlet?

You'd really have to "know your onions" in order to understand the colloquial language that inspired Harold Tivol to request a drink that pierced the tongue and penetrated the taste buds with each sip.

Gimlets, in 1920s slang, are known to have a piercing or penetrating quality.

Adding just a couple of ingredients to a Dry Rob Roy, which was made popular in 1894 New York City, elevated the existing beverage and turned into a go-to drink that became the iconic staple of Harold Tivol's cocktail hour.

2 chopped hearts romaine

tsp dried oregano leaves

cloves chopped garlic

tsp granulated sugar

tsp red wine vinegar

c extra virgin olive oil

lb blue cheese crumbles drained mandarin oranges* peeled & chopped granny smith apple* chopped caramelized pecans* diced avocado*

CATHY'S FAVORITE roasted chicken

An exceptional take from the Standard Grill NYC's classic million dollar chicken recipe.

INGREDIENTS:

3.5 lb whole chicken olive oil

1 bay leaf

5 sprigs of fresh thyme ground black pepper kosher salt

4 garlic cloves (slightly smashed)

2 lemons

2 slices 3/4in thick sourdough

1 cup creme fraiche

1 tbsp finely grated shallots

1 tsp aleppo pepper maldon salt flakes (for garnish) optional butcher twine

INSTRUCTIONS:

24-Hour Prep:

• Liberally season the interior & exterior of the chicken with salt and pepper

• Fill the interior cavity with 1 lemon, 1 bay leaf, 5 sprigs of fresh thyme

• Refrigerate for 24 hours

• Optional - truss chicken with butcher twine

Creme Fraiche Glaze:

• Zest and juice up to 1 lemon (to taste)

• Combine 1 cup creme fraiche, 1 tbsp finely grated shallots, 1 tsp aleppo pepper

• Whisk together

Cooking Instructions:

• Allow chicken to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes

• Preheat oven to 450 degrees

• Lightly coat pan with olive oil

• Place sourdough bread in the center of the pan, underneath chicken

• Drizzle olive oil onto chicken

• Bake 60-minutes, basting every 12-15 minutes with pan drippings

• With pastry brush, slather chicken with glaze, cook for 10 minutes

Pro-Tip: Use a cast iron skillet to elevate this dish from exceptional to exquisite.

• Repeat the glazing process, cook for an additional 10 minutes

• Let chicken rest for 10 minutes before carving

• Garnish with lemon wedges and maldon salt flakes

CATHY'S BANANAS FOSTER bread pudding

A nod to Emeril Lagasse, who crafts the best bread pudding Cathy has ever tasted.

INGREDIENTS:

6 firm (ripe) bananas, peeled & cut into 3/4" slices

4 large eggs (lightly beaten)

1/2 cup dark rum

6 cups day old french bread (no crust), cut in 1/2" cubes

3/4 cup granulated sugar

9 tbsp unsalted butter

3 1/2 cups heavy cream

1 1/2 cups brown sugar (packed light)

3/4 tsp vanilla extract

2 tbsp water with 1/2 tsp fresh lemon juice pinch of salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cooking Instructions:

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees

• Butter 1 tbsp sides & bottoms of 10"x14" baking dish, set aside

• Melt 8 tbsp butter in a large skillet, stir in 1 cup brown sugar and 3/4 tsp cinnamon until sugar dissolves (approx, 2 min)

• Add bananas, turning until both sides are soft and brown (approx 3 min)

• Remove from heat to carefully add rum

• Ignite rum with match and return to heat

• Shake pan until flame dissipates

• Remove from heat to let cool

• Whisk together eggs, 1/2 cup brown sugar, cream, milk, and vanilla in large bowl

• Add cooled banana mixture and bread

• Pour into prepared dish and bake for 50 minutes (this recipe is easy to overcook, be sure to keep a watchful eye on your dish while it bakes)

• Cool on wire rack for 20 minutes

Serve bread pudding topped with vanilla ice cream or softly whipped cream. Drizzle with optional homemade caramel sauce and enjoy immediately.

Pro-Tip: Emeril's recipe calls for 1/4 c of banana liqueur to be added into the bananas before the rum. Feel free to try it!

• Combine sugar, water and lemon juice mixture in a medium heavy saucepan

• Cook over medium to high heat, stirring constantly until sugar dissolves

• Carefully whisk in cream

• Remove from heat

• Add 2 tbsp milk at a time until you each desired consistency

Emma here, TIVOL’s self-proclaimed Chief Happiness Officer. You may have seen me over on the (insta)gram, helping out on the sales floor, or by the TIVOL Doggie Bar out front (the best spot in the city for some fresh ice water on the plaza). I can usually be found roaming around, greeting friends, and keeping a watchful eye on our beloved store. My size and, let’s face it, adorableness, give me access to all of the things happening behind the scenes at TIVOL that you don’t get to see just stepping foot inside the doors, so I thought I’d bring you “the tea” (aka the scoop) on what really goes on here throughout any given day.

Speaking of tea time… you don’t happen to have any doggie biscuits with you that you’d be willing to share, do you?

When I was a new puppy, my birth-mamma explained the importance of doghood to my brothers, sisters, and me. She said that dogs often serve as the best friends to the families that we join. She told us that we would each get human parents who would adore us and a family, to play with and love on. I think she might have underestimated the size of my TIVOL pack - which stands at almost 70 work-family members. Each person plays an important role, just like I do, to help keep our TIVOL family strong…and I am lucky enough to love each of them every single day.

Mornings usually start out early for my daily debrief with the marketing team. They’ve got the best treats and are usu ally willing to share. The team has been hosting a lot of closed-door meetings over the last couple of months that they claim are to work on the magazine… but I’m pretty sure they’re just eating chips and looking at pictures.

Ward, TIVOL’s Inventory Manager, keeps trying to get in there for sneak peeks at the earliest images from the fall photo shoot they did over in Municipal Auditorium, but the marketing team won’t let him in the room when the pictures are out. I tried to offer up a trade exchanging images for a doggie treat but all he had was Diet Mountain Dew…his loss.

After visiting Ward’s office, I pop over to check in on the inventory team. They’re usually pretty busy tracking and filling daily orders from the sales floor and online. I used to think that our store did most of their business with the people who came inside but I’ve learned that it’s so much more than that. Beautiful watches and timeless jewelry leave the TIVOL stores each day and make their way to homes across the country - and all over the world - to be loved for gener ations by new families. In a lot of ways, these pieces are like puppies… treasured by the people who waited with utter excitement for them to arrive.

Afterwards, I head down the hall to check in on the fellas over in the jew elry shop where the guys stay focused on ensuring the tiniest details are perfect for every piece that comes their way. The room is full of tiny trea sures, trinkets, and gadgets that create masterpieces, mend significant treasures, and restore family heirlooms back to full glory. The colorful jewelers each have their own backgrounds and vibrant stories which only add to the magic that takes place inside their shop.

Once I’m ready to head back to Earth for a few minutes, I venture up stairs to say hello to my friends in the back office. They’re always busy helping to place orders, pull inventory, and ensure that the store is running smoothly. I follow one of my back office friends, who’s here from Cristo Rey, hoping he will stop to play some ball with me but he has a lot to do so I decide to greet customers instead - and to say hello to my mom (Cathy Tivol) for a few minutes because I know she misses me.

As the day passes, I realize that I’m late for a very important meeting with the stuffed lobster and owl who found their way to my makeshift bed downstairs. Before that, though, I need to stop in and check up on the guys in the watch shop. TIVOL’s service department is one of the best in the nation, and it’s up to me to keep these guys on their toes. This team stays almost as busy as I do! Their time is spent piecing together the thousands of complications and movements that go into each timepiece that comes in and out of the store.

Meeting time is spent dreaming up new adventures for my Tivol family, reminiscing about the incredible stories that have taken place inside the walls of the stores, and wondering why they won’t put a second dog treat station downstairs just for me. I decide to make one last pit stop be fore heading home, this time over to the finance department to discuss my salary with TIVOL’s President, Brian. I keep trying to negotiate biscuits in exchange for my time but they insist that the unconditional love, snuggles, and belly rubs from the people who work here are payment enough.

At the end of the day, they’re probably right. You could never know all that goes into a single day here at TIVOL - so I’m glad that I shared it with you - and I wouldn’t want to have it any other way. I’m honored to be TIVOL’s Chief Happiness Officer. I used to think that that title meant that I was the one bringing the happiness but the joy, laughter, and love that exist within the walls of our stores help me to realize that it’s sometimes the other way around.
