Avid outdoor adventure seekers and fast friends, Mark and Sally Ann Chapline had each found their way to Denver through fond childhood vacation memories and a love of the outdoors, but were brought together by a unique family connection. Mark, a 4th generation Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley, joined his father’s Kansas City based team following graduate school, with the ability to live and work in Denver. Sally Ann, now a real estate agent with Compass, sought out Colorado as a place to create new experiences for herself in a familiar, yet exciting place.

Although they made it to Colorado separate of each other, Mark and Sally Ann had some family history guiding them. Their mothers, Sally and Elise, were roommates in college and bridesmaids in each other’s weddings... they had vacationed together before they started their families and remained “Christmas card friends” over the years. Sally Ann’s move out west from Atlanta prompted a stop-over at the Chapline’s home in Lake Lotawana. Sally Ann noted Mark’s childhood pictures lining the walls of the home and when she was given his information as a point of contact for her in Denver, she reached out.

Mark remembers Sally Ann’s initial message and how they easily fell into conversation via messages on social media and texts. Their shared love of Denver living with its outdoor diversions and an invitation to join a kickball league from Mark to Sally Ann brought them closer together. They enjoyed other activities like skiing, camping, hiking, and concert going, often running into one another. “At that point, we hadn’t been prioritizing time for each other, but we always enjoyed each other’s company,” says Mark. It was due to these repeated run-ins that Mark decided to lean into the relationship.

“I asked Sally Ann to a John Mayer concert that was actually a double date,” recalls Mark, “but I’m not sure she saw it that way, yet.” Sally Ann thought they were just going with a group of friends, and she remembers the concert fondly. They now chuckle while recounting how they had “five first dates” before things settled into a more serious relationship. “We wanted to make sure we were both ready for each other,” says Mark.

After the first few years of dating, avidly traveling and socializing together, pandemic lockdown occurred. They quickly made life changes that allowed them to work and live out of the Chapline family’s home in Lake Lotawana. This time together truly cemented their relationship and allowed them to have unprecedented time together. Self-professed leaders, connectors and socialites, they leaned into each other and their relationship when social opportunities were scant.

“Sally Ann’s energy is so positive – people just want to be around her,” Mark states. “She is trustworthy and warm.” He values her ability to have remained positive through lockdown and to find ways to engage in the world as they were able. Similarly, Sally Ann is thankful for that cherished time together and Mark’s ability to make the most of an interesting time in the world, always acting in kindness and patience. He can “take the time to sit down and really focus on a task,” which is exactly what he did when he decided to take their relationship to the next level and propose.

“My grandfather got my grandmother’s ring from TIVOL and my father, Robert, did the same,” Mark says, “TIVOL is the name we think of when we think of special pieces and jewelry.” The multigenerational link to TIVOL led him to make a special trip back to Kansas City and into the Hawthorne Plaza TIVOL, where he met with a seasoned sales professional. “Heather helped me through the whole process,” Mark recalls. “She was an ally in the selection process, and she kept me on track.”

With the TIVOL team’s guidance and the family blessing, Mark began to build Sally Ann’s ring. He wanted something classic and stylish that fit Sally Ann’s warm personality. Sally Ann opted not to be involved in the process, as she wanted to be surprised: “I love a 3-stone ring. I’m 5’11”, and I didn’t want it to be swallowed up by me!” With her preferences in mind, Mark created the perfect 3-stone ring with a 1.70tcw center stone and 0.5tcw side stones in a platinum mounting.

After the ring was chosen, Mark planned a proposal in Crested Butte, Colorado, one of Sally Ann’s favorite places and where they previously made their dating relationship official. In a mountain valley, surrounded by yellow wildflowers (her favorite color), Mark asked Sally Ann to marry him. She was elated and they celebrated with family and friends, who had traveled out to Colorado to surprise her. After a few days of celebration, they immediately began making plans for a Vero Beach, Florida wedding during the summer of 2022.

At their wedding ceremony, Sally Ann placed a men’s 6mm band in 18K yellow gold on Mark’s finger. Inside the band was a coiled texture, which his grandfather had in his wedding ring. In turn, Mark placed a 1.05tcw diamond and platinum anniversary band with 0.30tcw fancy yellow diamonds on each end next to Sally Ann’s engagement ring. The touch of yellow is an ode to her mother and grandmother, and a reminder of the importance of family and tradition in their daily lives.

As they approach their first anniversary, they value their relationship more than ever and delight in shared adventures. Their pup, Louie, a 1-year-old Portuguese Water Dog, is a lively addition to their home. Mark reflects on the last year as a time for “embracing the adventure of life” and Sally Ann encourages them to make time to create and work through a bucket list of travel opportunities and adventures.

They travel back to Kansas City regularly to visit family and friends. They remain connected to and love Kansas City for the community, character and deep pride in shared values and traditions. The TIVOL team looks forward to their visits and the opportunity to clean and service their special pieces now and for many years to come!
