Once again we have a selection of half day workshops alongside our usual full day and multiple day workshops. Half day workshops are held the day before a full day workshop, usually on a related topic. Students can book in for a half day, a full day or both the half day and full day workshops together in order to gain a better understanding of the particular topic or technique.
**Students attending a half day PLUS a subsequent full day workshop will receive a free lunch from Cwtch Cafe at the full day workshop - worth £15 pp**
Title: Simple Landscape in pastels

Learn how to create your own simple landscape scene in soft pastels. Including tips for composition, creating distance and focus and different methods for working with soft pastels. Suitable for all abilities but aimed at beginners or those new to the medium.

In this exciting mixed media workshop students will be experimenting with the balance between abstract and realism with an expressive representation of the ever popular seed head, using a combination of watercolours as well as other medium and some unusual tools for application! In this workshop students will be experimenting with watercolour and inks to create an expressive portrait of a ring tailed lemur. Ali will be looking at ways of creating life and energy in the painting through the method of application. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Revealing Layers - abstract workshop

Creating an abstract painting in Acrylic. We will build up layers of gestural paint that will reveal and conceal. Starting with a vibrant background to a calming mid ground and finally bringing the composition together with the foreground. Suitable for all abilities.

Within this full day acrylic painting workshop, you will have the opportunity to experiment with colour, composition, brush strokes and texture. A path in the landscape can create a great sense of perspective and depth within a composition. We will look at how contrast in a painting can bring it to life and how harmonious colour can add to this. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Winter Trees in watercolour

Spend a day learning how to draw and paint winter trees. Winter trees come in many guises, solitary hedgerow giants, copses and ivy clad oldies. We shall take a look at how sketch them and how to paint a winter tree scene in watercolour. Suitable for all abilities.

In this class we will create a Harbour scene depicted at sunrise. Starting with a quick sketch to plan our composition and tonal arrangement, we will then take this sketch and work it up to a finished pastel painting together. We will look at composition, colour choice, mark making and how to simplify complicated subject matter to maximum effect. Suitable for all abilities.

Date: Saturday 21st Oct ‘23 Cost: £75 pp Time: 10.00 - 16.00 This full day course will concentrate on encouraging a bolder approach to pastel painting. We will discover how being more daring with our mark making, colour choices and compositions will help us to push our pastel painting beyond the purely representational approach to the medium. This course will be suitable for all abilities.
Title: Autumnal Still Life in acrylics

We will learn to construct an interesting arrangement and how to develop this into a finished composition. Along the way we shall be developing a deeper understanding of how to mix and use those difficult natural browns and golds without the painting becoming heavy and how to organise colours and tones in order to explain form and depth. This workshop will be all about creating “Low angle, strong sunlight” one of the most important skills in terms of creating tonal dynamics. Students will also learn how to optimize the full range of colour and tonal effects for maximum impact. Date: Saturday 18th Nov ‘23 Cost: £90 pp Time: 10.00 - 16.00 Catherine will demonstrate watercolour’s fantastic ability to create soft veils of colour that resemble water. Practice wet-in-wet painting techniques. Drop running pigment and watch it mix on the page to form deep foliage. Use ‘lifting-off’ techniques to create subtle reflections. Suitable for all abilities.

Looking at the theory of creating ‘notan’ (or tonal value) studies and why it is an important tool for artists to explore different arrangements of light and dark elements within a composition before beginning a painting. Focusing on practical ways to create strong designs. We will do some simple loose sketches from photographs before transferring onto canvas in oils or acrylics. Suitable for all abilities.

Take your pick from the selection of seasonal flowers. We will then look at arranging and lighting the flowers with different coloured backgrounds, creating interesting and unusual compositions and colour relationships. We will create a simple tonal sketch on the canvas, before applying the paint in a dynamic way: focusing on colour, brushwork and composition. Suitable for all abilities.

In this workshop students will be learning how to create energy and movement to produce an animated animal study using the vibrant colours of acrylic inks. In this workshop students will be experimenting with a range of mixed media to create a delicate yet lively study of garden birds. Ali will introduce tips and techniques for depicting these fragile yet hardy birds including methods for creating subtle background effects and tips for applying line and colour in a way that describes the nature of these creatures. In this workshop students will be using watercolour and collage to create an expressive painting of beautiful golden Daffodils. Ali will demonstrate step by step how to create an expressive composition of flowers with a vignette style background before adding carefully selected collage to enhance the painting and bring it to the next level.
