to visit his divorced parents. As an adult, Reich pondered what would have happened to him, a young Jewish boy, during that same period in Europe; as Reich safely traveled by train to his family, European trains were simultaneously deporting Jewish children to concentration camps. Spurred by this concept, he composed Different Trains in 1988, a work for string quartet and sampled recorded voices. The work was awarded the 1989 Grammy for the Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Created by Caravaggio in 2016, Different Trains sets Reich’s score to an archival film montage that lends new depths and insights to the original musical composition. Both the music and videos are beautifully composed; Reich’s score is fragmented and modern, while Caravaggio’s editing swiftly leads the audience through the work. Installed in three screens mimicking the three-part structure of the music, the film has a cut-up, collage-like quality. The first movement, “America—Before the War,” includes images of wonder, idyllic countryside and city skylines seen flitting through passenger windows. The second movement stands in stark contrast; “Europe—During
the War” shows footage of Jewish people forced aboard Nazi deportation trains. The third movement connects the moods of the first two: “After the War” is hopeful, but cautiously so. Now part of the Museum’s permanent collection, Different Trains has received widespread acclaim and was featured in a special presentation at the Museo Bilbao in 2017. “The exhibition will feature a reflection space, which will contain information about the installation, transcripts of the voices heard in the melodies, and resources and additional reading about the Holocaust for audiences of different ages,” said Dr. Lauren Applebaum, curator of the exhibition. In conjunction with TMA’s presentation of Different Trains visitors will also have the opportunity to view Bearing Witness: The Voices of Our Survivors, which will be presented in the Little Theater twice daily. This documentary unites the oldest and youngest generations of the Jewish community in Toledo. In the film, six Holocaust survivors from five different countries share their experiences with teens in their own extraordinary voices. Different Trains continued on page 5

An important reminder of one of the greatest tragedies in human history, Different Trains, a large-scale video installation spanning nearly 25 feet, will occupy the Toledo Museum of Art’s Canaday Galley from Feb. 9 to May 5, 2019. The profoundly moving work about the Holocaust is both historically important and aesthetically impressive. The 29-minute film will run on a continuous loop and features the 1988 musical score by American composter Steve Reich, recorded by the Kronos Quartet and visually reinterpreted by Spanish filmmaker Beatriz Caravaggio. “This is part of the Museum’s effort to expand our collection’s new media offerings,” said Dr. Halona Norton-Westbrook, director of curatorial affairs. “This acquisition also aligns with TMA’s philosophy of collecting singular masterpieces. Different Trains is enthralling in every aspect – cinematography, musical score, and story.” Reich’s 1988 score is a beautiful and emotionally charged rumination on the train journeys of his youth and of the horrific deportation trains of the Holocaust. As a child, from 1939 to 1942, Reich made numerous cross-country train trips from New York to Los Angeles

Toledo Jewish Community Foundation C R E AT I N G A JEWISH LEGACY
WHY NOW? When nothing is certain, the one thing we’ve been able to count on is the gift of our Jewish heritage. Our nurturing community. A sense of belonging. Core principles and traditions that have given our lives meaning and purpose. Now those very gifts are facing their own future of uncertainty. It’s crucial that we, the leaders of today, pave the way for our leaders of tomorrow. A legacy gift is a demonstration of your belief in the continuity of Jewish life for generations to come. By leaving financial resources to Jewish causes you care deeply about, you can ensure future generations have an opportunity to embrace our heritage.
LEGACY GIVING
HOW IT WORKS With a little planning, you can make the gift of a lifetime by creating a legacy gift. You can make sure your generous support of our Jewish community’s charitable causes lasts for generations by establishing an endowment fund, empowering you to continue the work of your heart and ensure that the traditions and institutions that mean so much to you will exist well into the future. The term “legacy gift” covers a wide range of options. All can help you make a meaningful gift to the future of our Jewish community. Wills and Living Trusts In your will or living trust, you can make a gift of a specific asset, a stated amount or a percentage of your residual estate. Life Insurance You can make a gift of your life insurance policy to Federation/Foundation or name Federation/Foundation as the beneficiary. IRA Charitable Rollover If you are eligible, distributing IRA assets directly to the Federation for an annual campaign gift or the Foundation for a PACE gift or Designated Fund are ways to make an impactful gift and decrease the tax burden on your family.
When you create a Jewish legacy, you take an important step toward strengthening Jewish life for generations to come. Planning your gift now will help ensure your grandchildren can enjoy the same rich traditions and closeness of community that have given your life so much meaning and purpose.
The future starts with you.
Jewish Federation & Foundation For information about legacy giving, please contact Arleen R. Levine, Director, Toledo Jewish Community Foundation at 419-724-0355 or arleen@jewishtoledo.org

Jewish Community Relations Council A message from Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo regarding anti- Jewish Historical Society Update Semitic propaganda found in Toledo Lynn B Jacobs, Director, TJHS Director During the past year, you have contributed hundreds of interesting communirecently ty and family stories and photos of Toledo Jewish history. Our collaboration with On January 13, 2019, Jewish Federation became aware of anti-Semitic flyers that were placed in a few Little Free Libraries in two Toledo neighborhoods and at the Toledo Museum of Art. The hateful language and caricatures contained in the flyers are deplorable. Federation was immediately in communication with local law enforcement. We consider this occurrence in Toledo, and others like it all over the United States, as reprehensible. We condemn this hateful act and trust the rest of Toledo will join us. We have decided not to include photos of the flyers for the following reasons: The organization responsible for the flyers operates a website as an internet "trolling" tool used by white supremacist and neo-nazi groups to grow their exposure. They target children through designated children's spaces, such as the local Little Free Libraries, to plant their hateful content in order to stir up reactions from concerned community members who are trying to protect their children and stand by the Jewish community. Unfortunately, white supremacist and neo-nazi groups are counting on the well-intentioned community members to take pictures of the anti-Semitic content (which includes the website name and address in bold letters), post the photos on social media, and watch it gain traction as others share it across platforms. We very much appreciate community members informing us about the incident and standing by us. Facebook and other social media platforms are excellent tools for informing and educating people about anti-Semitism but we do not want to spread the hateful content further and give the white supremacists and neo-nazis what they want - exposure. We obviously hope this is an isolated incident and will not be repeated but we respectfully ask anyone taking and sharing photos of this or future propaganda to send the photos to the police. And, if posting on social media, please cover up the organization's name and website address so there is no credit given to the organization or its followers.
Racist graffiti and harrasment at GM Toledo plant
Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo Jewish Community Relations Council supports General Motors and the United Auto Workers in seeking an end to the racist and anti-Semitic graffiti and harassment that is affecting the security of employees at the Toledo plant. Workers have complained that addressing the situation within the plant is long overdue and we support the efforts to put an end to the hostile work environment.

the Toledo Lucas County Public Library has made possible the permanent preservation of precious bygone memories of our cherished ancestors and both daily and special events in their lives. Although the library’s main branch is closed at this time for renovation, its genealogy and local history department is still staffed and available to assist you. Simply call 419-259-5233 and ask to speak to Jill Clever, manager. She can help you access our digitized records on the Toledo Jewish History link on the library’s website, toledolibrary.org. You may also contact me to loan or contribute your hard copy records and photos to help tell the story of Jewish Toledo. Please note that the library makes the decision of whether to accept these records depending on factors such as items already present in the library’s collection and technical or legal concerns such as copyright issues. Something to look forward to this summer is the 39th Annual International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies Conference. The conference will be hosted at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Cleveland from July 28 to August 2 and is open to the public. As the conference is within easy driving distance, it presents us all with a special opportunity to attend the meeting and instructional seminars conducted by world famous genealogists. Last year’s conference in Warsaw, Poland, greeted 700 attendees from around the world. The Cleveland gathering will bring together amateur family researchers, academics, professional genealogists, historians, and others from around the globe who cherish the heritage and future of the Jewish people. Beginning instruction in genealogy will be offered. The planning committee for the conference is headed by Ken Bravo, Cleveland genealogist, who so generously shared his expertise with us last year at our joint society meeting with the Toledo Library at McMaster Hall. Some of our readers attended and were greatly impressed by Bravo’s expertise and passion for discovering our Jewish roots. By telephone, Bravo said the committee is in the early planning stages, but assured me that details of the summer conference will soon be forthcoming. He is now accepting submissions for expert speakers who wish to participate in 1-hour lectures, 30 minute presentations, and panel discussions. Draw a Jewish star on your calendar and plan to attend any or all of the events of the conference. Look for further details in your March Toledo Jewish News, including the curriculum and costs. This is an extraordinary opportunity for northwest Ohioans interested in our personal and community Jewish heritage to attend the premier meeting of international Jewish genealogy. I’m excited to have the chance to be able to offer-and hopefully share-this once-in-a-lifetime Jewish learning opportunity with you. Thank you for reading our articles and supporting TJHS activities. May 2019 bring renewed health and vitality to you and those you love.

Experience a Memorable Overnight Jewish Initiative Apply today at www.jewishtoledo.org/emoji
In 2016, Experience a Memorable Overnight Jewish Initiative (EMOJI) was established by Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo and Toledo Jewish Community Foundation. Funded by Foundation’s Long-term Community Needs Fund, the EMOJI program was created to make attending Jewish summer camp an option for all Toledo Jewish community children. EMOJI allows Jewish children in the Toledo area to attend Jewish summer camp FREE OF CHARGE for first-time campers, or at a very reduced cost for children who are returning to a Jewish camp. Attendance at Jewish summer camp has been shown to strengthen participants’ connection to their Jewish identity. As a result, they are more likely to value their Jewish heritage, support Jewish causes, and take on leadership roles within their Jewish communities as adults. So, you're probably wondering...how does this work? To be eligible for the EMOJI program, the child must live in the greater Toledo area and be in second through tenth grade. The child’s immediate family must also be current donors in good standing to Federation’s Annual Campaign. What do you need to do to be accepted? Have more questions? Contact Hallie Freed at hallie@Jewishtoledo.org or 419-724-0362 or fill out the EMOJI application online at www.jewishtoledo.org/emoji The future of our Jewish community lies within our children. Federation and Foundation hope to connect you and your children to pivotal Jewish camp experiences that will help create positive and lasting memories for the rest of your lives.

Eric Kripke to receive hometown honors, give talk at Peristyle Submitted by Harley Kripke
Eric Kripke will visit Toledo in mid-March for a weekend of hometown hospitality and to be honored for his creativity and success in television and film. On Friday, March 15, he and his brother, Matt Kripke, will be inducted into the Sylvania South-
view High School Hall of Fame. On Saturday, March 16, Eric will speak at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle at 1 p.m. in A Conversation with Eric Kripke. Admission is free and open to the public. During the program, Eric will show clips from some of his shows and will be interviewed by Haley Taylor of WGTE. Eric is the son of Larry and Joanie Kripke and brother to Matt and Dana. He knew what he wanted to do in life since he was a youngster. Eric graduated from Sylvania Southview High School in 1992 and went to University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television, where he graduated in 1996. His success in television and film since he graduated from USC has been amazing. Eric is the creator, executive producer, and showrunner of Amazon's upcoming series The Boys,
based on the award-winning comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Neal Moritz serve as executive producers on the project. The pilot episode is directed by 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg. Eric will direct the show’s season one finale. He also served as co-creator, executive producer, and co-showrunner of the NBC time-travel adventure series Timeless along with Shawn Ryan. His previous credits include creator, executive producer, and showrunner of NBC's hit drama Revolution, produced by JJ Abrams, and the long-running CW series Supernatural, now in its 14th season. Supernatural is the longest running show on the CW and one of the longest running scripted television series of all time.
Eric also wrote and executive produced the WB series Tarzan. In addition to his work in television, Eric produced and wrote the screenplay for The House With A Clock In Its Walls, based on the classic children's novel by John Bellairs and starring Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Kyle MacLachlan, and Owen Vaccaro. He also wrote and co-produced Boogeyman, which won the box office in its opening weekend. In 2016, Eric made his comic book debut, teaming with veteran artists John Higgins and Glen Fabry to create the original series Jacked for Vertigo Comics. All are invited to celebrate Eric’s return to his family roots in Toledo and attend A Conversation with Eric Kripke on Saturday, March 16, at 1 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.
Toledo BBYO reflects on 2018, welcomes 2019 By Sam Federman Happy New Year from Toledo BBYO! After ringing out 2018 with style, BSN and B’not Shalom are ready to get a jump start on 2019. In December, we took a trip to Camp Wise in Chardon for Kallah, a convention coordinated largely by Toledo’s own Abigail Berk from B’not Shalom. The theme of the convention was Kehillah, community. The weekend was full of fun and engaging activities focusing on positivity and mindfulness and strength of community. This year, we look forward to greeting even more Jewish teens and engaging them in meaning-
ful experiences, both at home and in the wider region. I would like to remind Toledo parents that here in Toledo, we take $100 off the $150 cost of a 5-year BBYO membership for every teen. In other words, that’s only $10 a year for five years of BBYO. On top of that, we offer several scholarships to teens looking to attend summer programs such as Chapter Leadership Training Conference or March of the Living. If you have any questions about these programs or BBYO in general, please feel free to email sam@jewishtoledo.org.
Intrafaith Blood Drive November's Intrafaith Blood Drive at Temple Shomer Emunim was the most successful blood drive we have sponsored in five years. Of the 18 walk-ins, nine were from Temple, eight were from Congregation B'nai Israel, and one was from McCord Christian Church. Adding to our success was one new donor and four donors who donated double reds. Not only did we make our goal, we went beyond it. Alice Applebaum and I thank our terrific volunteers Sandy Gronke, Sue Hirsch, Janet Rogolsky, Ricky, Rudy, Kyle, and Abby Schwartz, Judy Weinberg, and Sue Wilson. Kathy Sperling was kind enough to bake a delicious cake, which was enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to Lynn Nusbaum and Temple staff for all their terrific assistance and a delicious lunch. It has been said, "Whoever saves one life, it is as though they have saved the entire world." A lot of lives were saved on that Sunday. The 30th Anniversary of the Interfaith Blood Drive at Grace Lutheran Church will be Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23, 2019. Please put these important dates on your calendar and plan to donate.

YJT Goes to the Movies Shalom Bollywood Saturday, February 23 at 7 p.m. Lourdes University – Franciscan Theatre – 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania $7 per person 76 minutes, English and Hindi with English subtitles Full of unexpected delights, Shalom Bollywood tells of the Jewish stars that dominated early Indian cinema. When the world’s largest film industry began, it was frowned upon for Hindu and Muslim women to appear on screen. So, their roles were played by members of India’s Jewish community, Baghdadi and Bene Israel descendants who faced no taboos about performing in public. From the silent era through Bollywood’s golden age, Indian cinema icons share their highs and lows and how their careers pushed the boundaries of Indian-Jewish culture. Interviews plus rare archival footage and retrostyle music and animation revive the all-singing,
all-dancing, cheeky feel of a Bollywood production. RSVP to Hallie Freed at hallie@jewishtoledo.org or 419-724-0362

Men's duplicate bridge relocating For many years, Allan Miller and Dave Shall have organized a men’s Duplicate Bridge game on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. hosted by a rotation of players in their homes. As of this month, Steve Moskowitz and Bobby Kripke are assuming their duties. They will begin on February 12 and play every Tuesday at the Sekach building on the Federation campus at 7 p.m. If you are interested in playing men’s Duplicate Bridge and joining in on the game, please e-mail us at robert.kripke@gmail.com and mosko1950@yahoo.com. Experienced players only, please. The game has a minimal cost and is an opportunity to be with your friends and test your bridge skills. Refreshments and snacks are provided. We ask that whoever wishes to play to e-mail Bobby and Steve a week in advance so we can plan how many tables we need to have set up. We currently have between 4-8 tables depending on the snowbirds and we would like to see this game grow. Thanks, and a happy, healthy new year to all!
Congregation B’Nai Israel Adult Education Series – Jewish Lives, Jewish Learning Each year, as part of Congregation B’nai Israel’s adult education series, Cantor Ivor Lichterman of B’nai Israel offers a special, inspiring presentation in honor of Shabbat Shira - The Sabbath of Song. This special shabbat which is devoted to Jewish music, takes place each year when the Torah portion B’shalach is read, Exodus 13: 7 – 17: 16. The Shabbat is so designated since that Torah portion B’shalach includes Shirat Hayam – The Song of the Sea, also known as The Song of Moses, Exodus chapter 15. The Torah records that our Biblical ancestors sang this song immediately upon escaping from Egyptian slavery with the Egyptians in hot pursuit, after the sea miraculously parted and facilitated their safe crossing to freedom. This year’s presentation, The Golden Era of Yiddish Music will take place on Sunday February 10th at 10:30 AM in the main sanctuary at CBI. Cantor Lichterman will speak on and perform some of the greatest folk and art songs of that period. He will also show videos of the great performers of that genre of Jewish music, and he will address the current revival that Yiddish music and theater are enjoying. The program is free and open to the entire public. Refreshments will be provided. There will be an opportunity for questions before the program concludes at 12 PM. This presentation is being offered as part of CBI’s popular monthly adult education series – Jewish Lives, Jewish Learning which is chaired by Jeff Bauer. For enquiries contact the synagogue office at 419-517-8400.

Esther Dena Goldstein will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah at Temple Shomer Emunim on Saturday, March 9, 2019. Esther is the daughter of Marshall and Jodie Goldstein and sister to Alex and Sam. Proud grandparents are Bill and Marge Goldstein of Toledo and Leonard Saltzer of Cleveland. Esther is a seventh-grader at Toledo Early College. She is part of the photography club Capture the Change this year. In addition, Esther currently attends Goldman Union Camp Institute during the summer and while there she enjoys Israeli dancing and swimming. Also, she enjoys singing, cooking, and hanging out with her friends. For Esther’s mitzvah project she decided to volunteer at Ronald McDonald House and collect paper products to donate. Esther is looking forward to celebrating her Bat Mitzvah with her family and friends. Danielle Elyse Mallin will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Congregation B’nai Israel. Danielle is the daughter of Michael and Gabrielle Mallin and granddaughter of Morton and Roberta Mallin of West Chester, Ohio, and Sandra Herman of Naples, Florida. She is a loving sister to Samantha and Baylee. Danni is a seventh-grader at Timberstone Junior High School where she is an A-student and member of the school band playing trumpet. In her free time, Danni enjoys drawing, painting, crafting, and spending time with her friends. For her mitzvah project, Danni has chosen to spend her own money to create art kits for sick children at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital. She also plans to have guests at her Bat Mitzvah reception write notes of encouragement to include with the art kits on cards that she designed. Her inspiration for this project came from the experiences of two cousins who survived cancer. Danni is very excited to finally have Bat Mitzvah after almost a year of studying and to reunite with her out-of-town family and friends who will come from near and far to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah.
