Youngstown and Toledo teens are in the middle of their joint program with Israeli teens in Sulam Tsor. The Israeli students will be in the U.S. during the Israel Memorial and Independence Days observance. The teens’ participation in community events here in Toledo strengthens our partnership. Please join us, the Israeli students and our own Toledo teens for this meaningful holiday event.
THE URBAN SHÜK
A journey of artwork before and after Israel’s culture influenced a new style of urban art. This market-style exhibition provides a response to the spiritually-charged and creatively-influential experience of Israeli culture and art. The differences portrayed by news broadcasts and magazines were overshadowed by the family-like embrace and the camaraderie between American artists and Israeli artists. Join Toledo artist Mercé Culp for a trip to the city market, or “Urban Shük,” for a look at the creative marketplace of art, design and fashion. This project was made possible through the Artist in Residence Program (AIR) of Partnership2Gether (P2G) of the Western Galilee and Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo.

Jewish Family Service Friendly Visitor client testimonial: Sarnoff Mednick
Young philanthropists at work Stephanie Mahoney and her Congregation B’nai Israel fifth grade religious school students recently engaged in a creative way to raise money for the Jewish Family Service Food Bank when a lively game of Penny Wars resulted in $207! Stephanie and the
Rafi Berns
(front row) Aaron Schusterman, Alex Schusterman and Jordan Slutsky; (back row) Daniel Mahoney, Ella Richards, Jonah Musher-Eizenman, Stephanie Mahoney and Lucas Podolsky (not pictured: Haley Smith)
students brought over their funds and received a tour of the JFS Food Bank. In addition, the B’nai Israel third and fourth graders had a bake sale and raised $25 for the Food Bank. All of these students are aware of hunger in our community and worked together to help those in need. Rafi Berns, son of Allie and Dan Berns, donated money to the Food Bank as well. In discussing options for the family tzedakah, Rafi, age 5, said he wanted to "raise money for people who do not have shopping carts." Todah Rabah to these young philanthropists, their families and their teachers!
Originally from New York, Sarnoff Mednick moved to Toledo from Los Angeles last month to live with his son. Mr. Mednick, a widower, requested a Friendly Visitor to help break up his long, lonely days and to provide more companionship. Laura Kristoffersen, who recently joined the Jewish Family Service Friendly Visitor Program, visits with Sarnoff Mednick. "I'm looking forward to having stimulating conversations with Laura, as we do have a lot in common," he said. Laura graduated with a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from the University of Toledo. According to Laura, she joined the Friendly Visitor Program because she is interested in developing a relationship with an older adult in the community from whom she can learn and simply be friends. "I have a desire to help older adults live at home safely, but also with as high a quality of life as possible, and relationships are such an important part of that," she explained. Barbara Levison, Coordinator for the Friendly Visitor Program, was delighted to pair these two individuals. She said, "I believe they are going to have a great time getting to know each other and enhancing each other’s lives." If you would like to be a Friendly Visitor and brighten someone's life or if you know of someone in the Jewish community who could benefit from a Friendly Visitor, please contact Barbara at 419-724-0407 or barbara@JewishToledo.org.

Seniors visit Cleveland for transformative theater experience
In mid-March, about 30 local seniors traveled to Cleveland's Playhouse Square to see Not by Bread Alone, a moving and unforgettable performance. Direct from Israel, the production features 11 deaf-blind actors who take the audience on a magical tour of the districts of their inner world, the world of darkness, silence and bread. Monday, May 19 When Comedy Went to School 2013 | 83 minutes | English | Documentary/Comedy Why are there so many Jewish comedians? When Comedy Went to School answers this question with an entertaining portrait of this country's greatest generation of comics – the generation that includes the likes of Jerry Lewis, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason, Mort Sahl, and Jerry Stiller, all of whom make appearances in the film, telling jokes and telling their stories. The answer is also found in upstate New York's Catskill Mountains, aka the Borscht Belt, where Jewish immigrants transformed lush farmland into the 20th century's largest resort complex. Those Catskill hotels and bungalow colonies provided the setting for a remarkable group of young Jewish-American comedians to hone their craft and become worldwide legends. It was truly When Comedy Went to School.

Local News Religious school students stock JFS Food Bank In late March, fifth graders from Temple Shomer Emunim’s Sunday school made a grocery store visit to Giant Eagle for a special mission. They had $50 to buy breakfast, lunch and dinner for two people for a week. It was an amazing trip with a lot learned about shopping! Here is what the shoppers said they learned from their trip: Ellis Meyer: “The major difference there can be between brands.” Sam Goldstein: “To work as a team and look for the best brand. If you find something cheap, there is
always something less expensive.” Nina Liebes: “Looking for economical items that also have plentiful nutritional value.” Benny Golding: “I realized how limited you are when you are on a tight budget.” Sadie Pyle: “You can’t always get what you want.” Oscar Barchick: “Some other brands are a lot cheaper than the name brands.” After shopping, the items purchased were donated to the Jewish Family Service Food Bank, where the kids stocked the shelves and had a great discussion about their experience.

BITUSY
In early April, local USY young adults attended the Regional Convention, where they won four awards for their outstanding services, including best Kadima, best website, best joint USY/Kadima event and best fundraising event. The USY young adults tied for winning the most awards and was the only USY chapter to beat the SA/TO (Social Action/Tikun Olam) goal. Congratulations for a great job! BITUSY is sponsoring a donation drive of clothes in good and clean condition and is also asking the Jewish community to donate items that cannot be purchased with food stamps, such as diapers, laundry soap, hand soap, body soap, dental care, deodorant and toilet paper. The donation drive is taking place now and will last until June 1. Items may be dropped off at the B’nai Israel front office. Jewish Family Services and other local non-profit organizations will benefit from these donations.
May 3, 2014: Women to Celebrate Historic B’not Mitzvah and Trip to Israel Special Shabbat Service On May 3, 1979, 12 women were called to the Torah for a B’not Mitzvah ceremony. These women were achieving something not available to them as children, because the practice of Bat Mitzvah in a Conservative Synagogue was relatively new. Rabbi Perlmutter (z”l) taught the women and wrote, “These women represent a new spirit that enhances Jewish life.” Thirty-five years later, six members of the original class (Harriet Black, Sharon Marks, Rhoda Miller,
Marlene Remer, Merilyn Sanders and Doris Steinberg) will come together to participate in the Shabbat service. Sonia Maltinsky and Lois Miller, two members of the class were unable to attend, but send warm greetings. Last November, Ellen Federman, Kathryn Linver, Rhoda Miller, Suzie Rosenberg and Cathy Sperling toured Israel with a group sponsored by United Synagogue. In celebration of Yom Ha’Atzmaut and 66 years of Israeli history, these women will share their amazing trip as part of the service.
B'nai Israel Garden 2014 We look forward to season four of garden planting at Congregation B'nai Israel. Every year, there has been a steady increase of fresh produce that CBI has been able to give to the Jewish Family Service Food Bank. This effort has been achieved by a wonderful group of volunteers who tend the garden. Last year, we were moderately successful with our "Adopt a Plant" program, where several congregants raised vegetables at their homes and then donated them to the JFS Food Bank. To achieve greater success, more onsite volunteers and more home planters are needed. Those interested in joining us at the garden or growing vegetables at home, please contact Marty Kaback (chairperson) at 419-8262011 or bethandbmarty@earthlink.net, and we will be happy to introduce you to the mitzvah of gardening and giving to those in need.

Hadassah Hadassah May meeting to feature Cantor Amanda Winter
Please join the Toledo Chapter of Hadassah at the closing meeting on Thursday, May, 22 at 7 p.m. at the Vera & Leo Sekach Community Service Building. Our guest speaker will be Cantor Amanda Winter from Temple Shomer Emunim. Cantor Winter will be discussing the Women of the Wall celebrating 25 years of prayer, sisterhood and struggle. Women of the Wall, or Nashot Hakotel,
is a group of Jewish women from around the world who strive to achieve the right, as women, to wear prayer shawls, pray and read from the Torah collectively and out loud at the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem, Israel. Cantor Winter grew up in Roanoke ,Virginia as an active member of her Temple youth group, attending NFTY Kallot and URJ Kutz Camp. This camp is
where she learned what a cantor was and immediately knew it was the path for her. While earning her BA in Linguistics, with minors in music and Spanish, she returned to Kutz Camp as a counselor, renewing her desire to become a cantor. After earning her degree at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Amanda returned home to Virginia to work as a cantorial soloist, high school Spanish and music teacher, as well as a Jewish preschool teacher. Her love of working with people, particularly children, only continued
It is spring 2014. What a wonderful time for us! As the days lengthen and the breeze sweetens, Jews across the world will celebrate Yom Ha’Atzmaut 5774, the 66th Anniversary of the State of Israel. Every anniversary involving Israel is significant, so why does this particular moment in time mean so much to us? Anyone who was alive in 1948 can answer by sharing powerful memories of that spring, of the joy and the anguish which greeted the birth of the modern Jewish state. Anguish … for centuries we had been a wandering, defenseless people, depending on the whim of other nations for our very survival … and then, as we finally attained our independence, so many lives, both Jewish and non-Jewish, were lost in the struggle. And joy … for after centuries of yearning, our scattered people, led by a few ragtag pioneers, had reemerged as if overnight, a nation of strong, independent leaders. Through advances in agriculture, economics, science, medicine, education and technology, Israel has repeatedly proved itself to be a nation of leaders. In a region where politics tend to work against progress, Israel is a shining star. And friends, all modesty aside, some of the credit belongs to Hadassah … to you. By May 1948, you had already been hard at work for 35 years, helping people of all nations and creeds in the region. I cannot begin to list each Hadassah initiative, but some basic
brushstrokes may convey a rough sketch: • Innovations in health care: from mobile clinics in the 1920s to some of the most advanced medical technology in the world today. • Absorbing waves of olim fleeing persecution in Europe, Africa and Asia; providing them with the housing and vocational training they need to adjust to Israeli society. • Reclaiming and rebuilding the very land itself through our historic partnership with the Jewish National Fund. • Education, nurturing and training impoverished families, solders and youth at risk. This is quite a track record! However, the work is not yet complete. We have helped our State grow into a dynamic, thriving society. Now we have a new mission: to help guide that society in this new millennium. These are hard times for Israel. Sometimes it feels as if we will be pulled apart from the outside, and from within. Hadassah women know better. We pull together time and again, turning our diversity into unity. We have had the determination to bring refugees home to Israel by boat, train and airlift. We have built schools of health care and technology and hospitals, where ancient enemies learn to tend each other’s wounds. Today, we are watching an Israeli girl grow, her life sustained by the beat of a Palestinian boy’s heart. We are caring for the survivors of terrorism, seeing them rebuild their lives. Israel continues to be a land of miracles,
wonders created with the helping hands of ordinary people like you. For 102 years, Hadassah has been Israel’s partner in tending and nurturing all of the daughters and sons of our people. We have always been there. We will continue to be there. Life Membership Campaign Hadassah – Lock in for Life In honor of our Centennial Year, Hadassah continues to offer Life Membership and Associate enrollment for $212. The strength and support of Hadassah’s members and donors sustain the extraordinary work of Hadassah. As an incentive to enroll new Life Members, National will give internal Fundraising Goal Credit to the units for each new Life member and Associate enrolled. A very special welcome to the more than 50,000 women, men and children who showed their support for the extraordinary work of Hadassah by becoming new Life members and Associates. Na’amat A second chance The Timon NA' Amat Pioneer Women Vocational High Schools for Girls provides a second chance for its peripheral sector of Israel's society, one that is in many ways a last chance. For around this sector of people, a different life beckons: the world of the street: of drugs, of crime, of body and soul sold as the easy way out. For thousands of teen-age girls, life is bleak in a land
noted for its sunshine and optimistic residents. For thousands of young women on the brink of adulthood, the future holds no promise in a nation motivated by faith in tomorrow. For thousands of female adolescents, the world appears to be totally homogenous in a population characterized by its heterogeneity.
Hear the sounds of spring!
For thousands of future citizens, tomorrow has no relation to yesterday among a people imbued with a sense of continuity. Only one fact is certain: somewhere, somehow, in the most formative years of their lives, they have been left behind. In a society where status is measured in terms of skills, accomplishments, appearance and possessions, they have no place.
