Wow, it’s already November!

Our time of reflection has passed and now we are approaching a time for giving - giving gifts, giving support, and giving thanks. On behalf of Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo and Toledo Jewish Community Foundation, thank you for your dedication to and continued support of the Toledo Jewish community.

It’s also the time to begin thinking about year-end planning. Please remember that Federation and Foundation are excellent resources as you make these important decisions.

A charitable gift of any size is important and makes a huge impact, but the choices you make about HOW to give to Federation’s Annual Campaign and other charities you care about may influence your own benefits.

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make an annual, tax-free gift from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) of up to $100,000 per year to the Federation.

Are you 70 ½ years old?

It may be advantageous to make distributions to charities directly from your IRA. Could you benefit from guaranteed income for life?

Consider a charitable gift annuity in the Foundation.

Do you have appreciated stock?

Transferring securities may be particularly beneficial, considering the tax advantages. These can be used for the Annual Campaign or a gift in the Foundation.

Jewish Family Service Volunteer Opportunities

The Patient Advocate program trains volunteers to accompany older adults to medical appointments.

Volunteers assist clients in preparing for the appointments by helping identify concerns or questions to discuss with their doctor. Volunteers transcribe the physician’s notes to ensure they are clearly understood by the client. The Music & Memory ℠ program provides customized playlists on iPods to seniors suffering from cognitive impairment and forms of dementia. Volunteers help serve the clients by downloading music and compiling customized playlists.

Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo is happy to accept donations of stock as payment for pledges made to the Annual Campaign. Stock gifts need to be received by 12 p.m. (noon) on December 28, 2018 in order to sell before the market closes. Please note the brokerage firm may charge a transaction fee up to an amount of $100.00.

It should be noted that our procedure is as follows for accepting stock: Whenever a gift of stock is made, the donor receives a confirmation in writing that the gift was made on that date. Normally upon consultation with financial professionals, this is the date used when valuing the gift for IRS tax purposes.

After being notified that a gift of stock has been made, either from the donor or a stockbroker, the stock will then transfer into the Federation’s account and Federation will sell the stock. The net proceeds of the sale of stock will be applied against any outstanding pledges for the individual.

The donor will be notified, in writing, what the net proceeds were.

To expedite this process, it is extremely helpful if the donor, his/her stockbroker or financial advisor notifies Federation's Department of Finance verbally or through email when a gift of stock is made. By following this procedure, the timing between the gift being made and the sale of the stock is greatly reduced.

Young Jewish Toledo wants to empower you to host a Shabbat dinner for your friends in your own space, be it an apartment, house, park, or Toledo pub. Our goal is to help you create a warm, intimate Shabbat experience on your own terms.

Please complete this form at least two weeks prior to the date you would like to host your Shabbat dinner. Hallie Freed will discuss with you the Shabbat experience that you are planning and provide you with some basic Shabbat supplies.

Want to order pizza? Perfect! Feel like having a potluck? Fabulous! You choose how formal or informal this experience will be for your guests. If needed, you will be reimbursed up to a maximum of $100 per Shabbat dinner (not including alcohol). Experience a Memorable Overnight Jewish Initiative (EMOJI) is designed to offer children between the ages of seven and 16 a Jewish camping experience FREE OF CHARGE for firsttime campers, or at a very reduced cost for children who are returning to a Jewish camp.

One of the most pivotal experiences a child can have in his or her life is attending a Jewish overnight summer camp. Studies show camping builds vitally important key development indicators in adolescence. Jewish camp builds a strong positive Jewish identity that lasts a lifetime, and graduates of camp are more likely to seek out leadership roles later in life.

The process is simple. Parents register their child(ren) for camp and apply for any applicable subsidies through the camp and through their temple (if affiliated).

Then, each applicant completes a community application for support from Federation and Foundation.

Concert to commemorate 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht

By Emily Gordon It has been 80 years since Kristallnacht, “the Night of Broken Glass,” shattered life for Jews in Germany and, eventually, all of Europe.

The two-day pogrom resulted in hundreds of synagogues in Germany and Austria destroyed or completely defaced, thousands of Jewish businesses and homes ransacked, and glass and furniture tossed into the streets.

Approximately 30,000 Jewish men were rounded up and sent to concentration camps during the pogram widely regarded by historians as the beginning of the Holocaust.

The 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht will be observed in Toledo on Nov. 18 with a free concert at Temple Shomer Emunim at 4 p.m.

Samuel Rosenbaum, Z”L, and Samuel Adler’s Kristallnacht cantata “Stars in the Dust” was commissioned by 22 American congregations to mark the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht in 1988, said Adler, world renowned composer and Jewish Toledoan, in his program notes.

“The work opens with a question as to how could this happen in a country that prided itself on tolerance, intelligence, and education in its past and present. The rest of the piece is an answer to how this transformation took place, and the terror it started throughout Europe resulting in the destruction of most Jewish communities on the continent,” Adler stated in his notes. “The ending of the work is a call for such events to never happen again and a call for vigilance for such events never to happen again.”

“Stars in the Dust” features Cantor Andrea Rae Markowicz, soprano; Christopher Scholl, tenor; Lance Ashmore, baritone; and Bowling Green State University Collegiate Chorale, Richard Schnipke, director, and Orchestra.

The performance will be conducted by Emily Freeman Brown, music director and conductor of the Bowling Green Philharmonia and Opera Theater and professor of conducting in the College of Musical Arts at BGSU. It will be narrated by Los Angeles actress Michelle Azar.

Conducting “Stars in the Dust” is a “very powerful experience” for Freeman Brown, as she is married to Adler and considers it his family and community’s legacy, she said.

“His personal family history very closely connects us to the piece. He was 10 years old during Kristallnacht and his father was the last cantor at the central synagogue in

Mannheim, Germany. He and his family left Germany soon after,” Freeman Brown said. “Sam considers coming to America as having saved their lives. He feels a debt to America and a need to commemorate Kristallnacht here.”

Although she conducts Adler’s works often, Freeman Brown has never conducted “Stars in the Dust” before, she said.

“We decided this was a good time to perform it, to mark the 80th anniversary. I was very interested in performing the the piece and doing so in Toledo. It seemed like the right time,” she said.

The couple agrees that observing anniversaries that examine the past are important to maintaining a peaceful culture for the future.

“We must commemorate these events with special emphasis on the fragility of any society and an awareness that only through involvement in our society and its constant improvement can we insure the stability of our future,” Adler said in his notes.

Freeman Brown hopes audience members will be inspired and have something to think about after the concert.

“Music has a way of speaking to our sensitive and deeper nature,” she said. “It speaks to our hearts in ways words don’t on their own. With so much noise out on social media, music has a way of speaking to society in a way that goes deeper.”

As the grandchild of Holocaust survivors Ruth and Philip Markowicz and having grown up in Toledo, performing the piece is special to Cantor Markowicz, too.

“I like to think of music as a collaborative medium. We all bring our unique gifts to a project to help create something greater than ourselves,” Cantor Markowicz said.

“Ten years ago, when I began the journey to become an ordained Cantor, I made this idea a part of my life's purpose - to utilize music as a collaboratory medium to help make meaning, to help connect people to their Judaism, their spirituality, their communities and the world around us. For me, being a part of commemorations like this is a duty, and a small way that I can do my part to make sure that the horrors of this dark period in our history are never forgotten.”

Cantor Markowicz considers the commemoration an exceptional opportunity for community members to learn about Kristallnacht and observe its anniversary.

“We are fortunate to have Dr. Samuel Adler, a witness to these events and a world-renowned composer, as a member of our community. His exquisite interpretation through music of his story to help memorialize the destruction of the Night of Broken Glass is poignant and moving and, I believe, an important work in helping to guide us to a more peaceful future as we learn from our past,” she said.

Freeman Brown is looking forward to having so many “stars” perform together.

“The forces we put together for this performance are all amongst our best players. It’ll be really special and a real highlight to get this quality of performing forces together for this event. We’re really happy to bring everyone up from Bowling Green to do it,” Freeman Brown said.

Obituary

Betty Linver

September 6, 1924 – September 30, 2018 tempered Betty Jean by her older brother - and a love of chocolate. She was graduated from high school at age 16, and in 1942, at age 18, she met Joe Linver, a handsome young Naval Officer from Detroit. She stole his heart, and they were married the next year. They remained madly in love for the next 70 years, until Joe's death in 2013.

Betty was Joe's anchor, with wonderful business sense, the practical one whose advice fueled Joe's success at the Linver-Kripke Division of the Wabash Scrap Material Company here in Toledo. They raised their family of four children here, with Betty running a tight ship while Joe spent long hours at the office. With her gift of gab and engaging personality, she helped Joe win over client after client. For 40 years, she and Joe were active participants in the Toledo Jewish community as members of Congregation B’nai Israel, and as supporters of numerous Jewish causes.

ing two miles every day until last year. She never slowed down her entire life, even as dementia took its toll the past few months. She never lost her intense love of family; she was so proud of all of them and their individual talents and successes. Her Jewish faith became even more important over time as well, becoming a Bat Mitzvah at age 75.

Betty leaves a unique legacy of kindness and toughness, wisdom and courage. She loved as deeply as she was loved by others. She was as beautiful within as she was the stunning redhead externally. Betty is survived by her sister, Shirley Gaines; her two sons, Michael Linver and Preston Linver, and their wives, Mina Jo and Debbi; her two daughters, Janet Anderson and Rochelle Davidson, and Janet's husband Sven; and her nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Betty was laid to rest next to her beloved Joe at Fairview Cemetery in Albuquerque on Wednesday, October 3. Donations in her memory can be made to Congregation B'nai Israel in Albuquerque or to Armada Hospice in Albuquerque.
