Wednesday, November 8 at 12 Noon High Noon –The Hollywood Blacklist and the Making of an American Classic By Glenn Frankel Congregation B’nai Israel 6525 Sylvania Avenue $13: Luncheon & author presentation $30: Luncheon, author presentation and book Starring screen legend Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly in her first major movie role, High Noon is one of the best-loved and most enduring films of Hollywood’s Golden Age. It won four Academy Awards, including a best actor prize for Cooper, and became a cultural touchstone, celebrating integrity, courage and rugged individualism in the face of overwhelming odds. Yet what has been largely forgotten is that High Noon was made during the height of the Hollywood blacklist. Using newly available archival materials and interviews, Frankel tells the backstory of the making of a great American Western. Ultimately, HIGH NOON is about a small group of talented artists and the various ways each of them responded when their creative partnership was confronted by the machinery of political repression.

Ambitious Caprice dreams of opening her own hat shop, which clashes with the expectations of her Sicilian-born parents. Brilliant Ada secretly takes college classes despite the disapproval of her Russian Jewish father. Stunning Maria could marry anyone yet guards her heart to avoid the fate of her Italian Catholic mother, broken down by an alcoholic husband. And shy Thea is torn between asserting herself and embracing an antiquated Jewish tradition. The friends face family clashes and romantic entanglements, career struggles and cultural prejudice. But through their unfailing bond, forged through their weekly gathering, they’ll draw strength – and the courage to transform their immigrant stories into the American lives of their dreams.

Chapter • Five Triple Threat: A musical piano savant, amazing improvisational commedian and singer Thursday, November 16 BLACK boychik: The hilarious true story of a fat, mixed–race Jew crack addict who somehow becomes a comedian. Go Figure. By Sarge 7:30 p.m. – Doors open at

7:15 p.m. The Toledo Glass Pavilion, 2444 Monroe St. $15: dessert reception and author presentation $30: reception, presentation and book Parking: Free parking provided in Lot 6 only. Parking vouchers to be distributed during check-in at the start of the event. Bus Service: Park at the Jewish Federation Campus. Bus departs at 6:30 p.m. Bus seating is on a first come first served basis and by reservation only. Born in 1961 to an Orthodox Jewish woman and a black man, Sarge was adopted by a white Jewish couple from Long Island. As a young child Sarge began to show creative talent including piano virtuosity. But as a young adult, he battled an internal conflict about his heritage and found alcohol and drugs as a way of coping with his confusion. Ultimately, he found himself homeless and addicted on the streets of Manhattan. Getting clean and sober in 1990 would be the turning point in his life. It led to Sarge pursuing his life-long dream of getting into show business and becoming a comedian when he experienced a meteoric rise through the ranks in the ultra-competitive stand-up comedy business. He went on to blend his professional comedic chops with his knowledge of addiction and become the only nationally known entertainer to work as a counselor in rehabs with young people struggling with addiction. His birth, and then rebirth will have you laughing uproariously and then shedding a tear. A journey that is hilarious, uncanny, and truly inspiring.

Fall Festival of the Arts draws local artists, admirers together By Emily Gordon

Both art makers and art fans gathered October 8 at Temple Shomer Emunim for a full day of autumn-themed fun among family and friends. The 2nd Annual Fall Festival of the Arts featured 32 local artists of various mediums who presented and sold their work to more than 400 festivalgoers. While many were returning artists, 12 enjoyed participating in the festival for the first time. Julie Pentelnik was one of those artists, offering several types of Judaic art, from original paintings and fully illuminated ketubahs to menorahs. The artist taught herself how to create ketubahs, starting with her own, which she finished the day of her wedding. Providing Jewish couples and families with modern Judaica is Pentelnik’s goal, she said. “My art allows people to have Judaica in their homes but with a more contemporary feeling. It’s not the old-fashioned stuff many of us remember,” she said. “People want the newer feel. It’s a contemporary way to connect with our Jewish heritage.” Pentelnik was happy to see so many art lovers in the Toledo Jewish community turn out for the festival, she said. “I love meeting so many wonderful couples. It’s neat to meet all these different people through the art I do,” Pentelnik said. Jane Petitjean agrees. The artist, who exhibited upcycled purses, original paintings and prints, jewelry, and other types of colorful creations in her booth, grew up in western Michigan but moved to Toledo 20 years ago and “loves it here,” she said. “At home, the Jewish community was just too small and it was dif-

ficult to be very involved. Here it’s small, but it’s so active. I love the Jewish community we have in Toledo,” Petitjean said.

She enjoyed talking to fellow artist Sharon Frankel during the festival, with whom she was Bat Mitzvahed and traveled to Israel, and talking with visitors to her booth. “It’s nice to be among your peers talking about the past and the future. And I love the crowd. This festival has a very fun crowd,” Petitjean said. Participating in the Fall Festival of the Arts gives her energy and inspiration when she gets back to the studio, she said. “This city is so full of art and the community is very encouraging of the arts. To have this festival in the Jewish community is even better, because most of my art is Jewish,” Petitjean said. “Judaism is such a big part of my life. It’s hard for it not to come out into my art.” Glass artist Adam Goldberg thinks similarly. The co-owner of Gathered Glassblowing Studio said he participates in the Fall Festival of the Arts because of its supportive and friendly Jewish vibe. “This is the only art festival I participate in, and that’s because I like being around everyone in this community and meeting new community members,” Goldberg said. “It’s also nice to see so many Jewish artists working in this area.”

More about Gathered: Gathering is the first step. We use molten glass to create blown, hot sculpted, or cast glass pieces. Blending classic and new techniques, we make an effort to design art objects or installations that harken tradition while still being all-together new. Art glass has been a major part of Toledo's narrative since 1962, the beginning of the American Studio Glass Movement.

...because childhood only happens once We have a lifetime to consume and accumulate facts. However, there is a small window of opportunity, developmentally speaking, to learn trust in oneself and others, confidence, selfesteem, interpersonal skills, respect, playfulness, love for learning, and most of all, the joy of unconditional love given to and recieved by others. At Gan Yeladim Preschool, your child will grow in ways that are unquantifiable, but have lifelong positive effects. Make the right choice, because childhood only happens once.

Arts continued from page 4

Along with their fellow artists, Goldberg, Pentelnik, and Petitjean each donated a piece of their artwork toward an auction benefitting the Victory Center, a nonprofit dedicated to helping provide non-medical, supportive services to cancer patients for free. In total, $600 was raised for the Victory Center during the festival. In addition to the indoor festivities, families took advantage of unseasonably warm weather to purchase lunch from Chicago kosher food truck Milt’s BBQ for the Perplexed and eat together picnic-style on the grass. Both vegetarian and meat fares were a big hit, as demonstrated by the long lines at Milt’s and exclamations of satisfaction. The food truck sold out of its delicious dishes by the end of the festival. Children enjoyed playing and learning at Kids

Korner, sponsored by PJ Library® and the Gary and Andrea Delman Family Foundation, which included bounce houses, pumpkin decorating, and a pumpkin carving demonstration by Jackie O’Lantern. Many attendees agreed that Hallie Freed, director of the Department of Jewish Programs, and the Fall Festival of the Arts committee and volunteers built upon the first “excellent” art festival for an even better experience for everyone involved the second time around, said volunteer and attendee Fagie Benstein. “This year’s art festival was yet another fabulous event that brought our community together. Truly, the artists, the warmth, the excitement, the turn out…it’s the best,” she said. This year’s Fall Festival of the Arts would not have been as successful without the help of committee members and several helping hands, Freed

said. “Thank you to the festival committee: Gabi Mallin, Alix Greenblatt, Dawn Goldstein, Renee Jacobson, Beth Silver, Stephanie Shaulskiy, and Sharon Lapitsky,” she said. “Thank you also to all of the volunteers who helped make the artists feel at home and make the festival run smoothly: Gina Black, Julie Szyskowski, Dara Musher-Eizenman, Liz Witter, Sue Hochberg, Laurie Gross, David Berland, Becky McQueen, Raizel Shemtov, Emily Gordon, Fagie Benstein, Joel Marcovitch, Judy Weinberg, Emily Harel, Devorah Shulamit, Nancy Newbery, Mark Greenblatt, and Max Greenblatt.” Freed also expressed gratitude to the festival’s sponsors. “Thank you Huntington, Buckeye Telesystem, PJ Library®, and the Gary and Andrea Delman Family Foundation.”
