Now, in time for this iconic film’s 50th birthday, author Beverly Gray offers up a smart reading of the film itself as well as vivid, never-before-revealed details from behind the scenes of the production—including all the drama and decisionmaking of the cast and crew. For movie buffs and pop culture fanatics, Seduced by Mrs. Robinson brings to light The Graduate’s huge influence on the future of filmmaking.

When Nancy Balbirer learns her beloved 11-year-old beagle has kidney failure, she’s devastated. Her dog is terminal, her marriage is on life support, and Nancy is desperate to save them both. With humor and heart, Nancy Balbirer shares her story of relationships, loss, and canine friendship in this illuminating memoir about the lengths people will go to keep love alive…and the power of finally letting go.

A brutal crime. The ultimate cover-up. How do you solve a murder with no useable evidence? Private detective Nils Shapiro is focused on forgetting his ex-wife and keeping warm during another Minneapolis winter when a former colleague, Anders Ellegaard, calls with the impossible.

After a lifetime of marriage, Marcy Hammer is ready to get herself unhitched. But, Marcy finds herself planning her daughter’s wedding as she plans her own divorce. Trying to make everyone happy might prove to be impossible—because in the end, Marcy alone must make a choice between something old and something new.

No age requirement, just a desire to help elderly individuals recall pleasant memories by downloading some of their favorite songs onto an iPod Shuffle. Flexible hours. Nice working conditions. If you or a family member, friend, or classmate would like to perform a wonderful mitzvah, please contact Liz Witter at 419-7240406 or liz@JewishToledo.org.

Your old CDs can help seniors suffering from cognitive and physical impairments...

While the Food Pantry appreciates food donations, there is a greater need for personal care and paper products. Meijer Simply Give cards are not eligible for use on these items, so the Food Pantry depends on financial gifts or donations for personal care items. If you’d like to donate items to the Food Pantry, please consider choosing items from its wish list: • paper towels • facial tissues • diapers • feminine hygiene products • disposable razors • shampoo • soap (bar soap, dish soap,

liquid hand soap, and laundry soap) • toilet paper (preferably individual, pre-wrapped rolls)

Research has shown that a personalized playlist of songs can improve the mood of people with neurological diseases, boost the mood and cognitive skills of those suffering from a wide range of cognitive challenges, and more. We are in need of CD donations of Hungarian, Polish, Russian and Yiddish Music for clients who are a part of the JFS Music and Memory program, as these genres of music are difficult to find on iTunes. Are you a music lover? Are you tech savvy? Your skills are needed. The Music and Memory program is in need of volunteers to download music to iPods. In addition we appreciate any donation of used (or new) iPods, iPads, Speakers, Headphones, CDs (any genre), and iTunes gift cards. To donate, to learn more about volunteer opportunities, or to sign up for Music and Memory, contact Liz Witter at 419-724-0406, or liz@jewishtoledo.org

Please note that checks need to be post-marked by December 31, 2018 for a 2018 tax deduction.

Gift Policy Statement Regarding Donations of Stock Stock Payments Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo is happy to accept donations of stock as payment for pledges made to the Annual Campaign. Stock gifts need to be received by 12 p.m. (noon) on December 28, 2018 in order to sell before the market closes. Please note the brokerage firm may charge a transaction fee up to an amount of $100.00. It should be noted that our procedure is as follows for accepting stock: Whenever a gift of stock is made, the donor receives a confirmation in writing that the gift was made on that date. Normally upon consultation with financial professionals, this is the date used when valuing the gift for IRS tax purposes. After being notified that a gift of stock has been made, either from the donor or a stockbroker, the stock will then transfer into the Federation’s account and Federation will sell the stock. The net proceeds of the sale of stock will be applied against any outstanding pledges for the individual. The donor will be notified, in writing, what the net proceeds were. To expedite this process, it is extremely helpful if the donor, his/her stockbroker or financial advisor notifies Federation's Department of Finance verbally or through email when a gift of stock is made. By following this procedure, the timing between the gift being made and the sale of the stock is greatly reduced. Please contact Tina Stieben, CFO, at tina@JewishToledo.org or 419724-0371, or 419-346-5397 (cell) for further assistance. IRA Charitable Rollover Checks Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo is also happy to be able to accept IRA Charitable Rollover contributions to the Annual Campaign. Please contact Tina Stieben at 419-724-0371 or Arleen Levine 419-724-0355 if you are making provisions with your financial advisor to donate with an IRA Charitable Rollover check; this way we can ensure that the check is processed timely and that you receive the appropriate tax letter. For further information on the eligibility to contribute using your IRA Charitable Rollover, please consult your financial advisor. Personal Credit Card & Check Payment Deadlines Credit card payment information must be received at Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo by 12 Noon Friday, December 28, 2018 for 2018 tax purposes. As stated above, payments by check need only be postmarked December 31, 2018 for 2018 tax purposes, or you can make payments online at www.JewishToledo.org by midnight on December 31, 2018. Please note that our offices will be closed Tuesday, December 25, 2018 in observance of Christmas holiday. Genealogy at JLC By Stephanie Hinamon Genealogy is the study of family history and tracing lineages. Family history places members of a family in their proper contexts while describing their activities and the lives they lived. In her genealogy presentation Sept. 6, Irene Martin from the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library talked about different sources that help trace family lineage and where to find them. Sources are not always where you expect them to be and one should think outside the box when researching their family tree, according to Martin, a local history librarian. Attendees were given the opportunity to start their search in the library’s Mobile Technology Center, or Cyber Mobile as librarian Lauren Dilley likes to call it.

Author Lyn Julius is the co-founder of Harif, the UK Association of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa. Harif advocates for the rights of ex-refugees from Arab countries and Iran. The daughter of JewishIraqi refugees, Julius wrote “UPROOTED: How 3,000 Years of Jewish Civilisation in the Arab World Vanished Overnight” to shed light on the post-1948 exodus of more than 850,000 Jewish refugees from the Arab Middle East and North Africa (Mizrahi Jews) and its causes. Her book also assesses how well these Jews have integrated into Israel and

how their struggles have been politicized. It charts the growing clamor for recognition, redress, and memorialization for the refugees and explores how their cause can contribute to peace and reconciliation between Israel and the Muslim world. The Global Day of Jewish Learning is an annual, virtual joint Jewish learning opportunity presented by Partnership2Gether Western Galilee and The Jewish Agency For Israel. Temple welcomes cantor back home By Emily Gordon

Cantor Jennifer Roher may technically be Temple Shomer Emunim’s new part-time cantor, but to staff, clergy, and many congregants, she’s just newly come home. Cantor Roher has returned to Temple after eight years of working in Los Angeles. “It feels great being able to come back to a community that I’ve remained so close to. It’s always held a special place in my heart,” she said. Cantor Roher has deep roots in the congregation. Working as Temple’s cantor from 2005 to 2010 was her first job out of cantorial school, the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music of Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion. At Temple, she met her husband, Ryan Smith, from Canton, who was a congregant. “There are several members of the congregation today who take credit for setting me and my husband up,” Cantor Roher said with a laugh. They married and had their first child, Elijah. In 2010, the family left for Los Angeles, where Cantor Roher accepted an interim cantor posi-

tion that turned into a year, then two years, and so on. In 2013, the couple welcomed their second child, Gabriel. The family always knew they’d come back to Ohio someday, Cantor Roher said. They maintained close relationships to Temple and community members and have visited every year. Last year, Cantor Roher agreed to help Temple during its time without a cantor by visiting Jewish Toledo over weekends when there were b’nai mitzvahs. “That was a long commute,” she acknowledged. “I was officiating some services in LA, but it’s much easier to get someone to cover for you out there than it is here. And there were only a couple times where services overlapped, anyway. It was nice, I could meet the kids in advance and work with them.” When Smith was offered an assistant feature editor position at the Columbus Dispatch, the family decided to move back to Ohio, this time to Columbus. With a much shorter commute from Columbus to Sylvania than LA to Sylvania, Temple reached out to Cantor Roher about the possibility of her coming back on board in some capacity, she said. A part-time position for at least the next two years worked best for both parties, she said. Every other week, Cantor Roher arrives Tuesday and stays over for Wednesday. She then goes back to her family and returns to the area Friday through Sunday. “It was a very interesting process to take the calendar and figure out what my time here looks like. Why I think it works is the fact that we’re in the 21st century. There’s a lot you can do remotely through the technology we have to serve the community,” Cantor Roher said. “Even if I’m not physically present at Temple, I’m still here for whoever needs me. I’m still close enough that if

something should happen and the Rabbi needs to go out of town or needs me to visit people in the hospital, I can help out.” Her previous knowledge of the community and warm relationship with the congregation and Rabbi Sam Weinstein was a plus for everyone. “We are delighted to have Cantor Jen at the Temple again. She brings creativity to Temple programming, sincerity to our services, and devotion to the students she prepares for bar and bat mitzvah,” said Rabbi Weinstein. “Jen has tremendous energy and enthusiasm and manifests those qualities in everything that she does. She is warm and friendly, she is a comforting presence to our congregants in their time of need, and she has tremendous knowledge.” Cantor Roher will apply that knowledge to teaching Hebrew School students and b’nai mitzvah students, directing the High Holiday choir rehearsal and adult choir, and participating in board meetings. Her list of things to accomplish this year includes implementing more folk music and instruments in worship, an influence from her time on the west coast, establishing an intergenerational choir, and moving forward with a plan to create programming around the post-college to young families population of Jewish Toledo. “Having been able to go out and work in other communities, to grow and learn as a cantor, and come back and bring that knowledge and experience with me has been an amazing gift,” Cantor Roher said. Though the commute from Columbus to Sylvania is still a much longer one than most opt for, it’s worth it to Cantor Roher, she said. “This is a really special community. It’s full of wonderful people who really want the best for everyone and support everyone and work hard on a professional level,” she said. “It increases our happiness to be here. We are a Temple family.”

Perrysburg Musical Theatre to present ‘Parade’

Thomas I. Wisniewski, 1948-2018 • David J. Czerniak, Director

Visit us on the web www.jewishtoledo.org

Amid religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension, the stirring Tony Award-winning Parade explores the endurance of love and hope against all the odds. With a book by acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy) and a rousing, colorful and haunting score by Jason Robert Brown (Songs For a New World, The Last Five Years, Bridges of Madison County), Parade is a moving examination of the darkest corners of America's history. In 1913, Leo Frank, a Brooklynraised Jew living in Georgia, is put on trial for the murder of thirteen-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker under his employ. Already guilty in the eyes of

everyone around him, a sensationalist publisher and a janitor's false testimony seal Leo's fate. His only defenders are a governor with a conscience and, eventually, his assimilated Southern wife who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion. Daring, innovative and bold, Parade is filled with soaring music and a heartwrenching story, offering a moral lesson about the dangers of prejudice and ignorance that should not be forgotten. Groups looking for powerful, moving theatrical experiences will need to look no further than this unforgettable show. Audience members are encouraged to stay after the performance for a discussion about the play and its topics.

Chabad House of Greater Toledo celebrates grand reopening By Emily Gordon

Chabad House of Greater Toledo opened its new building on King Road to the public August 23 with a ribbon cutting, mezuzah ceremony, tours, and a light dinner. About 275 adults and 60 children were in attendance. “Just one year after we celebrated the groundbreaking and began construction, we are thrilled share with you our beautiful new center for Jewish life in Toledo,” said Rabbi Yossi Shemtov. “With tremendous gratitude to almighty G-d and our family, friends, and community, we are delighted to announce the grand opening of the brand-new Chabad House and Friendship Circle.” Speakers from the community touched on how instrumental Chabad and the Shemtov family

have been to Jewish Toledo’s interconnectedness in the past 30 years since the Shemtovs arrived and Chabad was established in Toledo. “Toledo can be a tough place for newcomers. ‘Who were these people? Why did they come here? What did they want from us?’ It turns out they only wanted something for us, hopeful to nurture a divine inner spark,” Michael Cooper said in his speech. “Yossi and Raizel never wavered. They accepted all of us and the Shemtovs earned our respect, appreciation, and admiration.” Cooper reflected on personal highlights of the past three decades for him and his family with Chabad and the Shemtovs, including Jewish education lessons with Rabbi Shemtov, retrofitting a trailer to serve as a

traveling sukkos with Levi Shemtov, and participating in Chabad’s Torah Factory and Shofar Factory. Cooper’s son Oliver is one of many Jewish Toledoans who have benefitted from early childhood programs and Camp Gan Israel with Morah Raizel Shemtov. Julie Fruchtman’s daughter, Sophia, was also one of her students. Fruchtman relayed in her speech how helpful Morah Raizel was to her and her daughter during a particularly difficult moment outside the classroom at Etz Chayim. “Almost every mother can remember the anguish of separation anxiety and how terrifying that first day can be, full of tears, caution, and uncertainty. And of course, I mean for the mother. I was a wreck,” Fruchtman said. “Once she peeled Sophia from my leg and steered her interest to the puzzle chest, she dried my tears and lovingly assured me that this was for the best, probably for both of us. She was right, it was.” The Shemtovs’ positive influence in the community has helped Jewish Toledo grow together and continue on, Fruchtman said. “One major commonality in every Jewish community is a sense of unity. Without that sense of unity, we would not be able to perpetuate

our morals and values through the lives of our children. For the past 30 years, Chabad has brought back that sense of unity in the Toledo Jewish community,” she said. “The backbone of the Chabad in Toledo is the Shemtov family. Wherever there is a need in our community, the Shemtovs step up and see to it that that need is filled. Our preschool, our Jewish day camp, Friendship Circle, adult education, resources for women, bringing Shabbat into our homes, and spiritual guidance are just some of the important things that are enriching our lives on a daily basis.” Jewish Toledo is fortunate to have Chabad, Cooper said. “You’ve done so much with so little. You’ve brought us closer together. You’ve enriched our lives,” Cooper said. “You started with next to nothing. Now look at this facility. It’s for a blessing. Baruch Hashem.”
