RESPONSE OF VARYING WITHIN-ROW SPACING ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOBACCO MALE STERILE HYBRID VARIETY PVH-2299 DANIEL ABEBE & MESFIN SHIFERAW Research and Quality Assurance Department, National Tobacco Enterprise (Ethiopia) S.CO, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

ABSTRACT A study was conducted at Shewa Robit tobacco leaf development farm experimental site during cropping season, which is between 2015 and 2016 to identify the optimum level of plant population on growth and yieldof tobacco male sterile hybrid variety PVH2299. Field experiment using male sterile hybrid variety PVH2299 were conducted in wet and dry seasons. The treatments consisted of four intra-rows: 50, 55, 60 and 65 cm. the experiment design was completely randomized block design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were collected on plant height, weight fresh leaf yield, number of leaves and leaf size (length × width). The result reveled that intra row spacing influenced on growth and yield of tobacco. Intra row spaces 65 cm (12,821 plants per ha) resulted in the highest fresh green leaves (1.50 kg plant), followed by 60 cm (13889

height (1.36cm per plant) recorded on narrow intra row spaces (50 cm). KEYWORDS: Robit, Tobacco Variety & Tobacco Yield Received: Feb 25, 2020; Accepted: Mar 17, 2020; Published: Apr 13, 2020; Paper Id.: IJBRDJUN20201

INTRODUCTION Tobacco crop is a source of income for out growers Shewa Robit areas. This is because of out growers supported access to extension, credit, input and regularly revised price of purchased tobacco leaf by national tobacco enterprises. Organizing farmers day is an important forum where farmers openly discuss their problem and argue about elements they are dissatisfied with and during each farmer’s days, model farmers award one of the important approaches to encourage farmers to produce more (Abebe and Tadesse, unpublished data). However, the factors important for production of tobacco included; resistance variety, plant spacing, time of irrigation, disease, pests and others improved agricultural input in the management of the crop. Plant spacing greatly influences growth and yield of tobacco. This is because correct spacing is important uniform distribution of light between plants. Some work have been done by Svotwa et al., 2002 on different spacing on yield and quality of tobacco, wider spacing for in tobacco higher yield and quality leaves of tobacco. The optimum intra-row spacing should be determined in every ecological condition such as soil nutrient, variety and climate differences. Conclusively, there is need to evaluate agronomic practices for the new released hybrid tobacco variety male sterility named PVH2299, and there is also need to evaluate proper spatial arrangements for these highly yielding varieties and come up with proper high yielding spatial arrangements or yield improvement. Therefore, this research trial was undertaken to evaluate to optimize this factor for a newly approved tobacco hybrid variety male sterility PVH2299 under the agro-climatic conditions of Robit.
