What damages your Roof? -by TJR Construction Keeping you safe and warm from the elements is a job that your roof does well and it takes a beating in the process from wind, rain, heat, snow and what not. TJR Construction knows this all too well since they have been dealing with roofs for over two decades. Professionals with vast knowledge in roofing and siding, they pride themselves on their work ethics and eye for details. The company stresses that roof damage can be attributed to various factors and the list is quite exhaustive. The most common types of damage are cracks, damage caused by heat, wind and hail, drainage system, blistering and loss of granules. Toby Richard of TJR construction, Pennsylvania says that although the extent of damage depends on the type of material used but the most common reason is lack of maintenance. Regular inspection can detect damage at the earliest and save a lot of money and hassle. Cracks appear in wood, asphalt or tile shingles for different reasons. For wood shingles age is the major reason for cracks and this damages the felt underneath thus causing leaks in the attic. Most damage resulting from hail is external and repairable and does not compromise the structural integrity of the building. However shingles may need replacement especially wood and asphalt ones. High wind from 50 to 70 miles an hour can cause roof damage. The wind pushes up the underside and manages to loosen the fasteners and causes damage every time there is a moderate to high wind. TJR Constructions LLC points out that prolonged exposure to heat causes shingle to crack and causes the water sealant to collapse and this in turn might damage the shingle. It is necessary to check the water sealant on a regular basis. Any type of roof has gutters, downspouts etc. to collect water and take it away from the roof. The gutter needs to be clean and free of any blockage for safe passage of the water otherwise stagnant water will cause damage. Granule loss is natural as the roof ages but early loss means a defect and it exposes the shingles to the elements and causes damage. Lastly, TJR construction points out that blistering or bubbling up of the asphalt occurs with age. Open blisters cause the felt lining to dry and crack and shortens the lifespan of the roof.
