25th Anniversary

Students and alumni reflect on valued Jefferson traditions

Anna Burke

Class of 2011

“When I think back on my four years of TJ, I’ll think of homecoming pep rallies, screaming at the top of my lungs and dancing to Thriller. I’ll think of JLC mornings spent cramming for tests, lattes in hand. I’ll remember the late nights, but also the kids on gchat who made them almost fun. I’ll think of sponge wars on J-Day and rushing to get the last samosa. The unique traditions at TJ are what make this place so fun — J-Day, homecoming pep rallies, and even those JLC mornings. The little things, like the quizzes in the bathroom stalls and the paintings on the ceiling tile, make every day just a little bit brighter.” photo by Bart Bachman

Class of 2004

“The most memorable thing about Jefferson is the students — they are what make TJ so special. I graduated seven years ago, and even after meeting talented peers at Princeton and in Teach for America, I still consider the people I met in high school to be of the highest caliber, both of mind and heart. I helped get Off-Campus Lunch passed as SGA president, so that was a memorable policy victory for me. So sad it got canceled, but I now understand the adults’ perspective on time and safety. Even though it’s silly and superficial, I was really proud to be crowned “Mrs. Jefferson” at Homecoming my senior year. It felt more meaningful than just

being called Homecoming Queen — it felt like my peers had voted me to be the representative of all the best parts of TJ. TJ Drama will always hold a special place in my heart. From circle to disc to cast parties and performance nights, TJ drama was and hopefully still is rich with traditions. Keep the faith! I played tennis all four years and was captain my senior year. Sports taught me resilience, leadership, hard work, and teamwork.”

Connor Barrett

Class of 2011 “The first thing I noticed about TJ was how much trust the students receive. The teachers really view us as mature young adults and with that we get more freephoto by Eugenia Yim dom like no bells and one school lunch period. I hope that never changes in the future. Additionally we get to bond with not only our class through Lock-In, Sophmore Sizzle and Junior Campout but also the whole school through BigSibs, sports and Homecoming. I’m excited to see what the future holds for TJ but also hope that these treasured traditions survive the new renovations.”

Class of 1995 “Homecoming is so huge now. It wasn’t nearly as big a deal as when I was a student. We had Homecoming spirit days, but not a lot of kids participated, and there were a lot fewer photo by Tahmina Achekzai events. The change took place entirely between when I left as a student in 1995 and when I came back as a football coach in 2003. I would love to know how it happened, since there are many situations in life where it is desirable to change the culture of a large group of people, and the cultural change that happened here could be a great model.”

Class of 2001

“Homecoming week was a special time just as it is now. I think as students we put more time into the floats and less time into the musical extravaganzas, but the overall feeling of the week was very similar. One major difference was that there was a spirit hall competition, in which each class went all out decorating a hallway. The decorations stayed up all week, so the ambience at school was very festive. Also, the entire school crammed into the gym for one pep rally, rather than splitting it into two sessions. When I was a freshman, we signed up for 8th period once a month in TA by bubbling in our activity choices on a scantron Front page design sheet. The Intranet came online around my junior year. I can say by senior Jeffrey Fu I know some of the people who invented the Intranet, which is kind of cool.”

Lessons I’ve learned from my time at Jefferson by Alla Herman Class of 2011 President When I first started writing this, I thought I would go through our four years at TJ or start out with a quote. This is probably what you expect from me. You are right. I will probably include a quote and mention something from each year in some way that seems like every one of the articles written in every senior issue. However, I will also tell you a story. A story of extreme courage, bravery, and cunning wits. Not quite, but hopefully I will be able to sum up what TJ has taught us (or at least me)! We learned a lot of things over the past four years. We learned how to speed read Sparknotes, finish problem sets right before class and use having no bells to our advantage. The most valuable things we learned had nothing to do with academics. I can still remember my first day at TJ. I thought I was the coolest thing to walk into this school. (Fact: all freshman girls think they are the best thing that has ever happened to TJ). I sat down in class next to one of the biggest nerds I had ever seen. I immediately judged my classmate for his looks and intelligence. It turns out this person became one of the absolute coolest, funniest and most influential people I have met in my life. This classmate has forever changed the way I treat people — I learned that everyone can bring something to the

table no matter how different from you they are. I was probably supposed to learn about biology freshman year. Instead I learned my first lesson: never disregard someone based on first impressions. As I learned from a recent episode of Modern Family, “Everybody’s got their stuff.” It is safe to say we have a huge variety of people in our class. We have drama kids, musicians, mathematicians, and those who never come to class. But it is completely true. Everyone’s got their stuff. If you haven’t found your “stuff” yet, don’t worry. Whatever your thing is, own it. Be the best at it. Do everything you can to learn more about it. Don’t ever give up something because of what other people think. Your friends will support you no matter what. I think sophomore year is the year of personal discovery at TJ. That year I found my “stuff,” and I am so glad my friends encouraged me to do something about it. Lesson two: Go for it! You will receive unconditional support. Junior year was an experience. It was an experience everyone should go through to realize the best thing TJ taught me. TJ students need to learn to be less perfect and make more mistakes. Make them now when you can learn from them. Sleep the night before a test and don’t study for it. Drop an AP course to get a fine arts credit. You will feel so much better. High school is not a race! It is a journey, and every time your car breaks down, you just want to hurry up and get to the

end. Don’t do this! Give yourself a break. Lesson three: you don’t have to be perfect. Life is less fun that way. Since our freshman year, we have been told that TJ is number one. We were winners! But we didn’t do anything. I always tried to figure out why we were winners. Standing with our class in the bleachers exploding when we won homecoming spirit week and the homecoming game this year, I felt like we were finally responsible for all the photo by Eugenia Yim wins we hear about at TJ. It really didn’t matter that we were winners before, because we never earned it until senior year. The last lesson I learned at TJ: Earning a win is more important than winning. Yes, TJ was a learning experience. We are all ready for college, med school, law school, whatever. But we are ready for other things that take precedence over any education. We are ready to go out there and face LIFE. Congratulations TJHSST Class of 2011, and good luck!

by Michelle Gahagan SGA President I started my Monday morning by being told, “Sometimes I forget how weird you are.” Exactly what a person wants to hear, right? Well, no, but I can only help thinking about how I’ll be remembered once I’m starting my Monday mornings elsewhere. Maybe that’s how people will remember me in ten years. And maybe photo by Bart Bachman I’m okay with being remembered that way. I don’t think anyone wants to be forgotten and I personally don’t want to forget. But how could I? How can I forget the girl who ate Five Guys with me before countless basketball games? The gym teacher that made me do a lap around the track on crutches? The guy that made pancakes with me during sophomore HUM? My freshman Spring Formal date? That guy that bought me my first lottery ticket? The girl who, after four years of getting to know me, is just now realizing how weird I can be? I won’t forget these people and I can only hope that they will

never forget me. We could have these anecdotes and memories for the rest our lives. Some of them might be purposefully blocked out (please let me forget the amounts of Abercrombie & Fitch clothing I bought as a freshman). But some are special and I desperately want to keep a tight grip on them. I never want to forget what it feels like to stand in the middle of the gym at a homecoming pep rally. It’s loud, the vuvuzelas are blaring, and about seven different freshmen hit me with backpacks. But it’s our school. It’s a huge group of kids dressed up like cowboys. It’s a swirl of numbers being chanted around me. And I’m standing in the middle with a microphone. I don’t want to forget that. As it was so eloquently put by a former TJ senior, “TJ is breaking up with us!” After a four-year commitment to this school, it’s leaving us. The nerve. Next year, TJ will open its senior lounge doors to a new cast of boisterous foosball players. But we knew it was coming. We’re one of thousands of TJ’s exflames. We should have known it would end the same for us. But some of us still hoped. We told the juniors on our sports teams that we’d come back to see their Senior Night. We’ve vowed to visit for Homecoming in hopes that 2013 will crush 2012. Unfortunately we have to face the reality that we must say goodbye and that next year TJ will be with a new class. So we move on. Four years here and it all culminates with a few wobbly high-heeled steps I’ll take across a stage. Not gonna lie, it’s pretty anticlimactic. I’m not saying that I expect confetti cannons and a cascade of doves but come on. Four years.

TJ truly did not value our relationship. If there’s one thing I hope everyone takes from this school, it’s a love to excel in a humble manner and a remarkable generosity. Of course we’ve all seen and had moments of bragging but for the most part, we’ve celebrated eachother‘s accomplishments. As for generosity, it’s simple to see. We raised over $1000 for Reston Interfaith at I-Nite in under an hour. We collected a record amount of cans for Homecoming. We raised money for Japan, sent school supplies to Tuscaloosa, and collected a mass of Toys for Tots. I’ll end this with a story. I never looked forward to physical fitness testing. I can’t do pushups, I wheeze like I have tuberculosis during the mile, and I always mess up my neck during the sit-ups. The only thing I can really do well is the trunk lift. But freshman year, one specific test really messed me up – the flexed arm hang. The flexed arm hang is really more about how well you can grip a bar than actual physical endurance. But I don’t have a good standing on either of those. I lasted for a good 15 seconds and then decided to just jump down from the bar. Genius. I broke my foot. About 2 weeks into school and I was the girl on crutches. There’s really no point to this story other than me addressing anyone that did physical fitness testing after my incident. You didn’t hang from your arms, did you? You’re welcome. That’s the mark I leave on this school and I cannot tell you how proud I am. To the Class of 2011 – best of luck. To all other classes – try to be as cool as us.

Jefferson may be leaving us, but our mark will remain

Letters from present and past principals Dear Class of 2011— You’ve worked so hard to get through TJ. Homecoming costumes, skits, musical X, Inight dance rehearsals, baked goods preparing, Facebook wall posts, signage for senior nights on the athletic fields, ping pong/videogame/foosball duels in the senior lounge, texting when you are not supposed to be texting, and the Philly Cheesesteak Challenge – these are serious hours of commitment! I will always appreciate the fun you put into your life to balance the intense workload you have faced in your studies, as well as your extraordinary commitment to service. I will remember the care and thoughtfulness you provided to Sebastian Hamilton and his family during his most difficult time. Your memories of him will never be forgotten. I’ll never forget performing with you in I-night as you embraced our many different cultures, and also launched service week to help the needy. Your leadership was impressive as you discussed Brave New World with underclassman outside on our lawn. You paved the way to illustrate grades are not as important as meaningful dialogue. You have contributed many new ideas towards our renovation plans for the benefit of future students. TJ will be greener and will provide more informal learning spaces, thanks to your recommendations. Your compassion towards our Japanese

visitors from Chiben was extraordinary as they faced tragedy back home. You were able to provide comfort and started raising funds at a time when it was needed most. Your care to elementary students has been exceptional, showing your passion for learning and patience to nurture their curiosity. Study buddies, special science expos, designing, mentoring, teaching, and more. It is inspirational to watch how you have served as role models to inspire future TJ students. Our Jefferson Society is strongest ever, welcoming visitors to our school and also extending involvement with other 8th period cultural groups. I have witnessed countless tours conducted in a different world language, showing your appreciation for global citizenship. Your research gives me hope. Your willingness to explore new ideas while managing risk of failure will keep you ahead in the future. I have confidence you will offer unique solutions that address some very difficult challenges we face in humanity today. TJ is better off as a result of your commitment, leadership, and compassion. I hope you will carry the TJ spirit with you on your next adventure, and also remember to bring back lessons learned to guide future TJ generations. Go colonials! Yours truly, Evan Glazer Principal, TJHSST

To the TJ Class of 2011, It is an honor for me to congratulate you on the eve of your graduation from this magnificent high school. How special to be graduating during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the founding of The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology! I am sure you have been reflecting on your four years at TJ --- remembering the thrill of acceptance, how old the seniors seemed when you arrived, and how hard you have worked. Now that you have made this journey, you probably regret there will be no more 8th periods, down time in the Aud Lob, or amazing Homecoming Week pep rallies. Most of all, you will miss your incredible friends and teachers. In your new role as graduates you will convey to others what it means to be a TJ student. It is a brand that you can proudly claim for years to come. As you do so, you will be an ambassador for this school and for this special way of educating young people. May you wear this honor with grace and humility. As I reflect on my six years as the principal of TJ, I feel great pride in the many accomplishments of both students

and faculty. I celebrate the creativity of the faculty in forging interdisciplinary collaborations between the sciences and humanities. I celebrate the students’ triumphs in both the arts and the sciences. But most of all I remember the collective pride of giving service to our community and to the wider world through the tutoring younger students, assisting the handicapped and the elderly, sending relief packages to the victims of natural disasters, and using science in service to others. What better gift to the world than a school full of well-educated students with heart! How terrific to be a part of a school that for 25 years has demonstrated the possibilities of learning and human potential! We all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us and must expand TJ’s legacy of learning and service. You have helped to create TJ’s legacy which will serve those who follow you. May you use what you have learned to make this world a better place for all. My congratulations and best wishes to each member of the Class of 2011, Elizabeth V. Lodal TJHSST Principal, 2000 - 2006

In Memory of Sebastian

Thomas Jefferson affords all of its students amazing opportunities. For academics there is nowhere better and for clubs and activities nowhere is more diverse. But what has affected me most during my time at TJ is the community. I will never forget walking into Gym 1 on September 29, 2009. While everyone else was dressed up for the Homecoming spirit day the entire junior section was dressed in black. At that moment, I couldn’t think of a better way to immortalize the life of one of the class of 2011’s own. Sebastian Hamilton had passed away on September 26 after a long fight against cancer. Sebastian Hamilton was most frequently described as heroic in the weeks following his passing and it is truly a fitting word. Strong, steadfast, humble, courageous, and honorable, Sebastian possessed all of these. For the one year I was privileged to know him I never heard him complain once about his situation; when we talked, I’m pretty sure I complained more than he did. Whenever I needed a hand, or someone to listen, or even if I had needed a shoulder to cry on I know Sebastian would have been there. Sebastian’s selflessness extended to every area of his life. One time, my brother and I were taking down a dead tree in our yard. Sebastian was waiting for his mother to pick him up after we had finished filming an English project. Without even being asked he stepped in and helped us lower it safely to the ground. As the Thomas Jefferson class of 2011 goes our separate ways, let us not forget what we leave behind. Let us carry Sebastian’s legacy with us, that we might all become better people for it. This is not goodbye, this is until we meet again. Photo courtesy of Trish Hamilton
