Senior campus leaders share parting words Find yourself, be yourself, love yourself, treat yo self

We’re ready for a journey that has only just begun

by Anant Das SGA President My fellow 2015 comrades, To say the least, we’ve had a unique life experience. We’re among the youngest in the world to remember tragedies such as 9/11 or the paraphernalia of the 90s. Likewise, we were the last to experience a normal year of the original TJHSST and were part of the social-media boom in Jefferson culture. In four years I’ve soaked in too many lessons to share, but I hope I can instill one lesson in all of you. Find yourself. In our time at Jefferson, we’ve learned a lot about ourselves, and we’ll continue to do so in college. Discover what makes you happy and what makes you tick. Figure out what relaxes you and what make you tense. And test your limits – you’ll realize you’re capable of more than you would have guessed. You don’t have to do this alone. Help really is there for those who are brave enough to ask for it. Be yourself. Surround yourself with those whose company you enjoy. Do what makes you happy and take on challenges with the mindset that you can conquer them (because you can! You are part of the H15TORY-making class, after all.) Express yourself in whatever way is most liberating. Love yourself. Embrace failures with open arms and learn from them. Realize it’s okay to say the word “no.” Covet the things that bring you joy. Don’t compare yourself to others – realize your own gifts and opportunities. There is no greater “revenge” than finding self-happiness. You do you. Treat yo self. Eat a Häagen-Dazs ice-cream bar. Binge watch “Modern Family.” Explore nature. Take a break – let your mind and body relax. That doesn’t always mean doing something super fun. Crazy internships and trips are fun, but are both physically and mentally tiring. We have worked so hard, so we really deserve to give ourselves a real break, at least one more time before we rush off to the greatness that waits for us. Respect yourself, respect others, and remember, you once cheered on 70 freshmen line-dancing for eight minutes. So never be afraid to stand out and never be ashamed to reach out a hand. From the heart, Anant Das

by Danial Hussain Class of 2015 President To my classmates: As we celebrate the plethora of resolve, honor and talent that is the TJ Class of 2015, it is important to recognize that our journeys have just begun. Life is a race – until now, we have only been preparing to run. After pulling all-nighters before quarter exams and physics finals, we are more than ready for late nights at our future offices. Homecoming spirit weeks and I-Nite performances have prepared us to try new things and push our limits. College applications and interviews have got us started on writing resumes. We’ve tied our laces, stretched and run our warm ups. But now the real race is about to begin. We’ve all lined up at the starting line. When the pistol goes off, some of us will sprint, while some of us will trip right out of the starting gate. Sometimes you will follow others as they guide you, and sometimes you’ll find yourself alone. Your path will unite, separate and maybe reunite you with family and friends along the way. You may choose to take a detour. You might hit a dead-end. But remember to stop for a breath along the way and smell the roses, see the sunrise and roll down the hills. Take the confidence that TJ has given you and make your own track, choose your own pace. Help someone else move forward whenever you can. When you look back at life, after crossing the finish line, you’ll see all that you’ve done. The road may not be clear to you now, but as Commissioner Gordon once said, “you’re going to make a difference. A lot of times it won’t be huge. It won’t be visible even. But it will matter just the same.” Life is a race where the only competitor is yourself. It won’t be easy, but you’ll have to keep moving because the future isn’t promised to any of us. Take advantage of all your potential and pursue your passions because in one form or another, success awaits.

I-Nite: A surprising opportunity for personal growth

Interdisciplinary passions: Learning without sacrifice

by Azman Garcha and Rhea Sharma Namaste Vice President and Secretary In freshmen year, both of us were somewhat unsure of joining Namaste or even doing I-Nite. There was a lot of hype surrounding it, so we decided to take the plunge. We never expected that one day, we would be the ones leading that crowd of dancers on stage, let alone that we would be the officers who helped plan the entire event. On a personal level, I-Nite and Namaste have given us a venue for lots of individual development: gaining crucial leadership skills, bonding with our fellow dancers, learning how to manage the huge administrative task that I-Nite is (especially at GMU) and just having fun expressing ourselves through dance. At the same time, being a part of I-Nite has been special to us because of what it represents as a whole about TJ. For all the fun we had, what made it best was how the TJ community was photo by Ellen Kan so supportive and enthusiastic about us expressing our South Asian heritage, especially when people from other cultural backgrounds participated in the Namaste dances. This aspect always brings smiles to our faces, because it’s a very unique and accepting environment that we never planned to sign up for when we decided to attend a school for science and technology.

by Pooja Chandrashekar Founder of ProjectCSGIRLS Something that’s really important to me is being able to intertwine all of my passions so that I can pursue everything that I’m interested in without sacrificing one for the other. In high school, there is often this pressure to find a very narrow niche and try to excel in it, but it’s much more exciting and enriching to try and integrate things from seemingly disparate fields. I love the idea of interdisciplinary learning, and it’s a principle I’ve applied throughout my high school career, whether it be conducting research at the nexus of different scientific areas, starting a nonprofit, ProjectCSGIRLS, as a way to bring together tech, social impact and education, or writing narratives to bring important social issues to light. I think there’s a real beauty and power in bringing together ideas to make something innovative and disruptive. Inevitaphoto by Ellen Kan bly at some point you will be presented with a choice between two or more of your passions or interests. But instead of choosing one over the other, try and bring them together. You might just end up with something so creative and interesting that it’s more uniquely you than you ever imagined!

Model UN: Embracing flexibility and individuality

Relay: A lesson in perseverance and the unexpected

by Sreya Atluri TJMUN Secretary-General TJ has shown me how persevere against obstacles and take those experiences to better myself as a person and member of the community. As Secretary-General of TJMUN, I was in charge of several tasks, from addressing the renovation issues that led us to relocate our annual conference, to working with sponsors, delegates, staff and administration to host one of the largest high school conferences in the Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. area, to building community spirit with a club of over 200 members. In the process, I’ve realized that while things may not go exactly according to plan, embracing flexibility can often lead to more successful outcomes, with fantastic photo by Ellen Kan memories made along the way. I’ve also learned the importance of appreciating individuality, the spirit of freedom and passion – it allows for innovation and expression of unique ideas. The passion, energy and spirit embodied by the TJ community is what drives me – working with individuals who care about the community and who desire to create change is an awe-inspiring feeling. Together, we are more than the sum of our parts, and we can make a difference. Every moment of my journey has been worth it because I’ve had the opportunity to interact with some of the most talented, dedicated and amazing individuals I know and make memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you so much, TJ!

by Sarah Falls and Aleesha Toteja Relay for Life Coordinators After four years of Relay for Life, we’ve learned that it’s okay if things don’t go the way you expect them to go. Relay has taught us that it’s not feasible to plan everything down to the smallest detail. Even though perfection is something we all strive for, it is extremely hard to achieve. In planning an event of such large scale, it’s inevitable that something will go awry. But it’s during times like these when everyone comes together to create something beautiful. Sometimes, the things you don’t plan for end up being the best things. photo courtesy of Sarah Falls This year was especially tough because of the restrictions put into effect by the school, county and country. Due to new nutrition guidelines, we had look beyond in-school bake sales to find an alternate source of fundraising. With our school under renovation, we also had to find a new venue to host our event. All of these added responsibilities made planning the Relay all the more complicated. However, with the help of our committee and the amazing support and dedication of the TJ community, we were able to pull off a wonderful event and raise upwards for $45,000 for cancer research!

Student speakers offer grad speech exercepts

Q: When you think of the Class of 2015, what adjectives come to mind? A: Smart, musical, dedicated, caring. Q: What distinguished the Class of 2015 from the classes before it? A: The TEDx theme was a perfect one to describe this class: Prevail. They had a rough start their freshman year and were mistakenly labeled as dumb by their peers. That’s far from the truth. I’ve seen this class work very hard to meet the academic demands and achieve beyond the accomplishments of those students ahead of them. In college admissions, the Class of 2015 outperformed the Class of 2014 with acceptance yield in each of the big three: U.Va., Virginia Tech and William and Mary. Q: What was your most difficult moment in dealing with the Class of 2015? A: Maintaining hope the Class of 2015 will make it out of Spring 2012. Parents, teachers and students were focusing on what was wrong, while our greatest need was to focus on how we can work together to make it right. I give a lot of credit to the teachers who offered extra tutoring support and to Anant Das for maintaining a positive attitude as a student leader. Q: What was your most memorable moment in dealing with the Class of 2015? A: I’ve had several memorable moments with our graduating seniors. However, I think the most memorable one will be at graduation when I have a chance to offer publicly personal reflections on what has made this class so special.

Q: What parting words do you have for the Class of 2015 as we graduate? A: The journey to success is rarely an autonomous ride. Make sure you thank the people who helped you along the way, especially the difference makers.

Q: When you think of the Class of 2015, what adjectives come to mind? A: Spirited. Enthusiastic. Brave. Intelligent. Groovy. Energetic. Polysyllabic. Heroic. Thoughtful. Eloquent. Ambulatory. Resilient. Maddening. Lovable. Hygienic. Serious. Wacky. Squirrelly. Individualistic. Communal. Remarkable. Squirrelly. Unruly. Rambunctious. Barbaric. Talented. Endoskeletal. Fun-loving. Future-bound. Challenge-seeking. Word-compounding. Electrically-neutral. Nearly-graduated. Q: What distinguished the Class of 2015 from the classes before it? A: One of the most significant factors distinguishing the Class of 2015 from all other classes before (and since) is the year of their scheduled graduation. In fact, 2015 is the first class in the entire history of TJ whose graduation year has been evenly divisible by 31. I expect several decades will pass before this feat is repeated. Q: What was your most difficult moment in dealing with the Class of 2015? A: Honestly, I think the most difficult moment will be next fall when school starts and all the faces I’ve grown used to seeing over the last four years are gone. I’ve only been at TJ for five years now, so I really don’t even remember what it’s like to not have “my” class around. Q: What was your most memorable moment in dealing with the Class of 2015? A: There have been so many. The homecomings have all been incredible—especially the upsets our freshman and sophomore years—but for me, I don’t think anything will ever compare to the Senior MEX and my lightsaber duel with Darth Vader. I spent three weeks obsessed with building the perfect pair of lightsabers, and it all paid off in those two performances. My wife said I was giddy when I got home that evening. Q: What parting words do you have for the Class of 2015 as we graduate? A: When you settle in as a freshman, you’ll realize that in college you have far more freedom than you’re used to. Cherish every moment of that, because it won’t happen again. Take the opportunity to explore your passions. Remember that money is a means to an end, not an end in itself. Don’t be afraid to change your mind about what you want to major in, what kind of job you want to have, or what you want to do with your life.

NEWTON NAGIRIMADUGU “Don’t get stuck in the waiting place. It feels like throughout high school, time and time again I’ve been stuck in the waiting place. Waiting for the ‘one.’ Waiting for the phone to ring. Waiting for the weekend. Waiting for the future. Waiting for college. Waiting for a response. Waiting to get better. Waiting for the medicine to start working. Waiting for the feelings to fade. If I could give you one piece of advice, it’d be to stop waiting.”

Jonathan Osborne Q: When you think of the Class of 2015, what adjectives come to mind? A: Smart, creative, funny, dedicated, outSAGEouse. Q: What distinguished the Class of 2015 from the classes before it? A: Spirit and passion for Homecoming, willingness to get things DONE, and very willing to help others out. Q: What was your most difficult moment in dealing with the Class of 2015? A: Prom this year was a huge hassle, but the prom committee was able to pull everything together to make the event a huge success, thanks to Charlene Franke, Aleesha Toteja and Nan Baker. Q: What was your most memorable moment in dealing with the Class of 2015? A: The freshman lock-in was a tremendous event, and the last lock-in at TJ for the last three years. It was a huge success, and a lot of fun. Q: What parting words do you have for the Class of 2015 as we graduate? A: I hope you have learned a lot at TJ and that we have prepared you well for college. Have fun in college, but make sure you don’t lose track of what you are doing there. Find something you like to do, that you are good at, and that will allow you to make a living. Do not spend too much money on college. Plan well over the next few years, as you are planning for your whole life. Get something important and useful out of the classes you take.

Preview: Keynote Speaker This year’s keynote speaker will be Alexandra Petri, a columnist and blogger for The Washington Post. The young journalist graduated in 2010 from Harvard College, where she wrote for the Harvard Crimson. After first interning at the Post, Petri landed a job there as editorial-page editor Fred Hiatt’s comic blogger and occasional editorialist, according to an article published in the July 2011 issue of The Washingtonian. The Washingtonian also names Petri as “the Post’s go-to writer for laughs,” while Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Barry hails her as “the funniest person in Washington.” Petri covers a variety of subjects in the ComPost blog, which offers “a lighter take on the news and opinions of the day.” Her recent topics of conversation include Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign, Krispy Kreme donuts and “A Clickbait History of the World.” Petri also recently published a book, “A Field Guide to Awkward Silences,” on June 2.

The beauty of joining I’ve been watching STEM and journalism you for four years

Journalism teaches necessary life skills

by Ellen Kan Print Editor-in-Chief So many things become beautiful when you really look. I’ve tried to live by this philosophy since I first read it in Lauren Oliver’s “Before I Fall.” When I started writing for tjTODAY my freshman year, I did my looking, both figuratively (as I sifted through interview notes, searching for quotes that felt right) and literally (through my camera’s viewfinder). After four years, I love what I’ve found. I chose TJ because of its unique STEM focus, but tjTODAY has taught me the domains of STEM and humanities don’t have to be mutually exclusive. My world is filled with ink-stained pinkies and quote confirmations, but also free-body diagrams and triple integrals, solubility guidelines and star systems. Journalism doesn’t dimin-

by Lindsay Williams Online Editor-in-Chief To many TJ students, journalism is an “easy” class. Of course, it’s not as technical as any of Dr. Osborne or Dr. Dell’s classes. But it teaches life skills that are diamonds in the rough world of high school classes. These lessons won’t fit on a course description or syllabus, but they are the most important of my high school experience. Journalism almost models a real job, because we have an actual product. As mentioned in the One Book I didn’t read, “Drive,” the motivation has to be intrinsic for this “job,” because ultimately, staff members are responsible for their own work, and they know that the quality of work will be judged by someone who

ish my appreciation for STEM – instead, it enhances it. Together, these skills give me a universal toolbox that can be adapted to innumerable applications in life. The fresh perspective of journalism ensures that I am uniquely equipped to not only tackle the complexities of STEM, but also to communicate discovery and innovation, to bridge the gap between the informed and the ignorant, the passionate and the passive. Writing for tjTODAY has truly expanded my horizons, showing me the beauty that comes from positively impacting my community – and across multiple disciplines, too. Thanks to journalism, I’m ready to take on challenges far beyond the written word.

by Sandy Cho Online Editor-in-Chief For the past four years, I’ve been watching you guys from a distance. Chasing you down in hallways for an interview. Sneaking into classrooms to listen to you talk flawlessly. Peeking over heads to capture your perfect Bhangra form at International Night (I-Nite). To be honest, the Class of 2015 had accomplished way too much for me that I couldn’t officially become a stalker, but I truly enjoyed watching you through tjTODAY. Despite the lows, working for the paper has been a valuable experience. After four years of writing, photographing and designing, I am so thankful to everyone. In particular, to Ms. Harris, thank you for being the best adviser

I’ve ever had. Your creativity and calming presence really got my creative juices going, and I designed things I never imagined I was capable of doing before. To the past and current staff, thank you for the laughs and jokes. I’ll always remember the reign of Big Sandra. To the administration, thank you for all the support. We are truly lucky. And most importantly, thank you to all of you for reading our paper, providing feedback on our work and being the greatest class ever. It’s always been my pleasure to watch you, the Class of 2015, at its best. I hope to continue watching you in the future.

is a peer instead of an authority. This led to a determination to work together in the face of adversity, a desire to lead successfully and a soul search of my own creativity and innovation. As I get ready to leave tjTODAY behind, I have come to realize how valuable the experiences have been - both during class time and during the countless hours spent at home, in eighth period - and at worknights and how much I will miss these moments. I can’t thank the staff and Ms. Harris and Mrs. Seavey enough for shaping my time at TJ. As I continue to college and beyond, I know that the memories I have will help me both remember TJ fondly and have a unique perspective in college.

What I took away from journalism

The less noticed art of the newspaper

Second sem: Taylor Swift jam out sessions

by Stav Nachum News Editor When I think about leaving, I don’t think immediately of what I’m leaving behind, but what I’m leaving with. The newspaper room and family has really grown on me over the last couple years. Here I typed on the outdated school computers. Ate way too much Chinese food and Bon-Chon chicken. Blasted the best indie songs I could find on Spotify. Here, too, I headlined. Wrote columns about how to pull an all-nighter and the legacy of Robin Williams. Edited stories with a vibrant purple pen. Here, I produced writing I felt proud of, and I read writing I felt blessed by. In my three years as a part of tjTODAY, it has

by Alexis Williams Design Editor Most people join an elective because it’s what they are passionate about. I joined journalism because my sister forced me to and my mom wanted me to get involved. And yet, I have never once regretted the decision to take journalism. Through all of the late nights, work weeks and stress, I have found a passion in journalism. It’s not a passion for reporting the process of hunting out and finding the truth, or even for writing (I tend to make my articles as quote-based as possible so I have put in less of my own words). Instead, I have fallen in love with the art that is less often noticed in a newspaper: the art of drawing readers in and making them

by Eduard Danalache and Carolyn Chheath Staff Reporters It was the start of second semester, and we found ourselves in a class of three people. Starting Journalism 1 in second semester put us in a precarious situation. Unlike the other Journalism students, each of whom had at least a semester of journalism experience, it was safe to say we had no idea what we were doing. After Ms. Harris’s onemonth bootcamp of article writing, design and photography, we were set free into the world of tjTODAY. From outrageous Geosystems stickies to a movie we saw the weekend before, we were quick to begin writing our opinions on happenings around TJ. Our first major piece was the infographic on those pesky carpenter bees

served as my family, my purpose, my passion and the bane of my existence—often all at once. In each stressful bout of time right before an issue came out, I remember staying up late into the night and forging ahead on articles and designs. I remember creating the friendships that can only be forged by working together tirelessly weeks at a time. And I remember feeling as if these friendships were ending each time we bid the seniors farewell with bittersweet goodbyes. So now that it is my turn to leave the journalism room one last time, I have no doubt that these memories will be leaving with me.

stay, of making pages and words beautiful to look at, of using both color and black and white. Page design is more technical than one would expect. As a beginning designer, I often base my designs on those that have already been used in magazines in order to become familiar with dominance, points of entry, and other aspects that I had never even heard of before I started journalism. Nevertheless, once I finish a page, it always feels distinctly my own, and that is an amazing feeling. I will never regret the decision and sacrifices for journalism because it helped me fine that passion, even if it isn’t exactly what I expected.

buzzing around the trailers. We may have accidentally called them bumblebees for a couple of days before Dr. Glazer told us we were wrong. Oops. But journalism quickly became part of our daily lives. We interviewed people in the hallway between classes and stayed after school to watch baseball games in the light rain. We weaved around Taiko drummers to get the perfect shot after spending 10 minutes finding the perfect camera-lens combination. We stayed up late talking to people for our podcast, and editing the material together for another hour after we were done. Even though we had just started Journalism, it was a lot of work. Luckily, we had the journalism family to jam to Taylor Swfit music together.

The Cave: Home for Our four year journey Threshies everywhere as Jefferson yerds

Our final curtain call has finally arrived

by Threshold Seniors

by Teknos Seniors

The Cave was one of the first parts of the old TJ lost to the renovation. Everything in that room occupied a special space in club members’ minds: a bloody hand hanging out of the ceiling tiles, an eccentric pillow collection decorating the comfortable chairs and couches, a wall adorned with reading recommendations scrawled on sticky notes. The back corner was lined with a sacred group of shelves stuffed with old versions of Threshold. In the fall, we’d cram into the cave to have heated disputes over which pieces to accept: “This image is so unique!” “Don’t you just

love the way he describes a hike through Yosemite?” “This rhyme scheme needs a lot of work.” Despite its name, “The Cave” had a spacious window to the old courtyard, from which light would stream in. Beginning with the soft rays of the late summer sun, enduring the scant brightness of the winter solstice, we’d labor away, eager to produce our beautiful magazine but also primed for any piece that the Jefferson community could throw at us. The Cave was the one spot where we could share our bizarre story ideas, our repressed creativity and, most importantly, our love of literature.

by Techniques Seniors How can we sum up four years of yearbook in just a few words? Yearbook certainly wasn’t easy. We spent class time, eighth periods, lunches, summers, weekends and countless hours at obscene times of the night toiling away. We sent thousands of emails, texts, chats and made hundreds of Google Docs. We ate excessive amounts of pizza, croissants and nutella in the yearbook room, but we burnt it all off running around to get interviews. Despite all this, we are yerds. We love yearbook. We loved creating something beautiful from a blank page and working with each other to create the most exquisite four books we possibly could.

The entire journey was surreal, from the moment when all we had was one phrase, to opening the first box of books, screaming because we finally had the product of all our late nights and hard work. Thank you so much to the best yearbook staff in the world, the most talented photographers, the always helpful Herff Jones representative Ms. Kara Peterson and the most hardworking, passionate, hilarious and kind-hearted adviser in the universe, Ms. Erinn Harris. And finally, thanks to you, the TJ community. We got to collect thousands of your stories, thoughts, and memories over the course of four years, and we got to show everyone what truly made TJ worth it.

Class of 2015, we’ve finally arrived at the final curtain call. The finale is near. The end of our high school careers marks a time for celebration, but from our past experiences here at TJHSST, we all know that reflection and nostalgia is a common recourse that we can all relate once in a while, whether it be through old pictures, Facebook posts,or screenshots of embarrassing SnapChats. lol. lmao. For us, having read papers and articles, opinions and facts, delivered directly from the minds of TJ students year after year, we’ve come to understand that it’s not just science that’s fostered on the hallow grounds of

Our class is driven, motivated and willing to act on our beliefs, our interests and our convictions. That’s what makes TJ’s Class of 2015, us, winners. No matter how many mistakes we’ve made, whether it be on a physics quiz or failing to sign up for eighth periods on Iodine, because we’ve always managed to work our way forward in the long run – pushing through difficulties with those who care for us and who we care for – we can say with confidence that we’ve succeeded as a class.

Prom Committee creates monumental night for seniors by Mei Baek and Uzma Rentia Staff Reporters The expansive columns held both an famous building in Washington, D.C., the National Building Museum, and the Class of 2015 prom. The location was a perfect match for the theme of this year’s prom: “A Night at the Museum.” The event was both uplifting and saddening, representing the end of an era as well as the beginning of another. For a select group of people this night also represented something else: almost a year’s worth of planning and work successfully being executed. “As the co-chair, I was one of the primary students responsible for the entire event, and spent hours communicating with the different companies we worked with, as well as working with our class sponsors and members of our class council,” senior Charlene Franke, one of the co-chairs of the Prom Committee (PromComm) said. The remaining members of PromComm were seniors Sanjoli Agarwal, Swathi Balakrishnan, Mona Bugaighis, Anant Das, Tahia Emran, Sarah Falls, Conrad Gehrki, Sravani Korupolu, Monique Mezher, Anugya Mittal, Shreya Punya, Morgan Sizemore, Sage Teasley, Aleesha Toteja and Helen Zhang. Unlike previous years, the Class of 2015’s prom was planned solely by seniors. Past graduating classes worked in conjunction with the respective junior class council to better prepare them for their own prom. This

year, however, juniors were given little responsibility. “The only thing the juniors did was set up decorations on the day of the event, since we couldn’t be there because of dinner, pictures, etc.” Toteja, Franke’s fellow cochair, said. “We met with them earlier in the week to show them how to set up the centerpieces and explain to them how the event would be.” Despite having fewer people planning, the night was a success overall. “Our expectations for prom this year were pretty high because of all the work we put into this event,” Toteja said. “Thankfully we were able to meet and surpass our expectations.”

28 retiring teachers

Writing their

Next Chapter

Retiring teachers discuss plans for the future “I’m going to work on problems I haven’t had time to work on, things that I find to be fun, which are physics and engineering problems.” -Michael Walker

“My husband and I will be moving to Hawaii because my husband was stationed there with the Navy. I want to learn to sail and scuba dive and surf.” -Valerie Palmer “I’m about to be reborn as a 70-year old unemployed man. The general advice is to never look back, because the two lives are not comparable.” -Michael Stueben Other teachers leaving: Mary Ann Donohue Jenny Lee Teri Davis Barbara Wood Daryl Jones Mary Kate Lewis Emily Orser

“My family and I are going to move to the Oregon coast, buy a house in cash, live off my wife’s military retirement and I’m going to work part time at a community college, teaching when I want to.” -Philip Ero

“I’m going to take a little time just to relax, and then I’ll probably do some substitute teaching next year, and my goal is to try and eventually get into college coaching track and field.” -Jeffrey James Every year, teachers come and go from Jefferson, and this year is no exception. Some teachers who will either be retiring from FCPS or will just not work at Jefferson any more have already talked to their students about the issue. However, on June 1, principal Evan Glazer released the full list of teachers retiring from FCPS after the 2014-15 school. Some teachers, like biology teacher Barbara Wood, will be retiring before the school year ends, while others, such as Computer Systems Research Lab director and technology teacher Michael Stueben, won’t be retiring until the end of the school year. Many students, current and past, are saddened by their leaving, yet the teachers understand that this is for the better. “I had 30 years put in, and I also taught 4 years up in New York, so I just felt it was time to move on and try something different.” said physi-

cal education teacher Jeff James. Many teachers that are leaving will be missed by their students, who have been working with them for years. “My opinion on Dr. Wood leaving is so many feeling of sadness. There are no words, but maybe depressing. She’s an amazing teacher and TJ will be losing one of its best,” said freshman Nira Harikrishnan, current student of Dr. Wood. At the end of the year, the Fairfax and Jefferson faculty will hold ceremonies for retiring and leaving teachers, one of which is typically held on the last day of the student school year. “The teachers who put in a career, we spend more time reflecting on their impact,” Dr. Glazer said of the end-of-year faculty luncheon. “The teachers who are leaving, we acknowledge that they’re leaving, and we applaud and thank them.”
