Bursary Trust
Bursaries sit at the heart of our School and benefit our whole community. Bursaries are already a special feature of CLS. They enable bright boys to thrive regardless of family means, giving them the opportunity to mix with like‑minded contemporaries in an atmosphere of academic challenge and encouragement. They mean that boys from all walks of life have the privilege of growing up in a diverse and supportive community where success is the product of their own ability and endeavour, rather than where they come from. Our task now is to secure income streams for future bursaries and to broaden our offer so that more boys have access to the kind of education that will enhance the whole of their lives. Thank you in advance for your generosity

City of London School Bursary Trust An education at City of London School can be transformative. It unlocks potential, empowers and inspires. City of London School was founded on generosity: in 1442 John Carpenter left money in his will to educate four boys. The Act of Parliament which established the modern School in 1834 threw down the barriers to social and cultural inclusion by welcoming boys from all backgrounds and beliefs. We remain true to our founding principles to this day.
We have a proud tradition of offering full-fee, means-tested bursaries every year to bright boys from disadvantaged backgrounds. This contributes substantially to the School’s distinctive and inclusive ethos and we need to ensure its continued success.
The Issue
The Solution
Our funding relies on the continuing donations of corporate bodies, Livery Companies and individuals, including parents, alumni and staff. The Corporation of the City of London match funds a proportion of the money we raise.
We would like to create a flexible fund to enable the School to:
However, we have no endowment or money invested for the future, and currently we are only able to offer full-fee bursaries to 8 - 10% of our pupils.
• Offer partial bursaries to middle-income families
We would like to extend this opportunity to all boys who would thrive here, regardless of their financial means. We raise £1 million a year to fund the current bursary provision and we hope to double this it in ten years.
• Double the number of bursaries available
• Support bursary recipients with costs associated with attending CLS, such as music lessons, lunches and travel to and from School We would also like to invest funds over the long term to safeguard our bursary provision for future generations. This is an ambitious project, but we believe that with your support we will achieve our goal.

I joined City at the age “ofWhen ten, I was overwhelmed by the
scope of extra-curricular activities available to me. I embraced these opportunities with immediate enthusiasm and they have made me who I am today. For this, I will always be grateful to the Bursary Scheme.

This wealth of opportunities, “this environment of learning,
this atmosphere of acceptance: none of it is a given, and I am so very lucky to have experienced it all due to my place at City. Here, finally, was somewhere that not only allowed me to be myself, but never stopped encouraging it. That’s all a child can ask for, and I’m so glad I found it.
