DIV I FCS
There’s a COMMON RECIPE for success that teams strive for when they reach the FCS playoffs. It doesn’t matter what conference one comes from, how much experience one has or sometimes even the type of offense run by a team. Everyone wants to control the line of scrimmage with their run game.

Baylor wide receiver Terrance Williams and South Carolina defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney headline the 2012 AFCA FBS COACHES’ ALL-AMERICA TEAM announced today by the American Football Coaches Association. The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best - the coaches themselves. Williams leads the nation in total receiving yards with 1,693, and averages 153.91 yards per game.

T THE HEART OF SPORTS HISTORY FOR ALMOST A CENTURY, no other company has been as influential and intimately involved in shaping the game of American football as Wilson.
A
THE PROCESS OF THE PIGSKIN The first footballs created were made of natural materials, such as an inflated pig bladder inside a leather cover, hence the nickname “pigskin.” The first Wilson football, called the A-5, was manufactured in 1916. In 1925, Wilson made its first football to inflate with a valve, which was the first ball that could be thrown in a wobble-free spiral, according to the Wilson Football Museum. In 1955, Wilson opened the football factory in Ada, Ohio, to ensure that Wilson footballs would not only be American-made, but the highest quality footballs ever produced. Wilson footballs are made of hides from cows located in Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska. It takes approximately three days from the time the cowhide arrives in Ada to its final production as a football. During this time, the cowhide is cut into the proper size and shape, the leather is “cured” to give it a natural brown color, and the Wilson “W” is stamped. The four pieces of the ball are then hand-stitched together and stretched to the proper size. WILSON TODAY Today, the world leader in football continues to produce all of its leather balls in America in the world’s only dedicated football factory. Wilson produces more than 7
4,000 footballs a day and more than 700,000 a year. And, in a world driven by technology and machines, it might surprise you to find out that all Wilson footballs are still made by hand. Wilson is taking customization to the next level by allowing select institutions to fully modify their footballs. Each team has control over its game ball to choose its exclusive technologies, including accurate control laces (ACLs) and sewn on stripes. ACLs are made of pebbled composite leather and provide 174 percent more grip than traditional laces. Sewn-on composite stripes, WE Horween Leather (makers of the finest quality leather) and full color options also are all customizable features. All the latest, fully customizable Wilson footballs can be seen on the field at Auburn, Louisville, Northwestern University, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Utah and Wisconsin. In addition to NCAA Football, Wilson is the official football of the NFL – every throw, every kick, every touchdown and every point in every NFL game has been with a Wilson football. The Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, American Youth Football and several high school associations also use Wilson footballs. “We never stop improving our technologies or innovating our products. We won’t stop tapping into the fore-
sight of legendary players and coaches like Brian Kelly or Urban Meyer who help us create truly game changing footballs,” said Kevin Murphy, general manager, American football, Wilson. SOURCES Livestrong.com Wilson.com

FOR THE HOLIDAYS: TOUCH FOOTBALL RULES WITH THE HOLIDAYS officially upon us, families and friends are beginning to gather in the backyard to play friendly games of pigskin. If your annual Turkey Bowl tends to get competitive, rivalries may become heated. It’s important to nail down the rules of touch football before you start playing to avoid any grudges or ill-will when your team crushes the opposition.
9
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TOUCH AND TACKLE FOOTBALL When playing with family members around the holidays, you probably don’t want to enforce the rules of tackle football. Instead, opt for the “two-hand touch” method. A player is down when a defensive player places two hands on the ball carrier. One-hand tackles are generally not accepted — that’s way too easy! Because the two-hand touch makes tackling easier, most touch football teams use passing plays only. For this reason, every player is deemed an eligible receiver as long as he or she is past the line of scrimmage — no backwards passes are allowed. With most plays being passes, touch football usually implements a “two completion” rule, where a team earns a first down by getting two consecutive completions. In some variations, first downs are eliminated altogether and the teams switch possession only when a turnover occurs. If your touch football players are less experienced, you will likely defer to this method as more interceptions are thrown. Since teams are likely using makeshift fields in backyards, neighborhood cul-desacs or vacant lots, touch football fields are usually not regulation length and generally don’t have goal posts. As is the case, field goals are eliminated — if your team does not make a first down the other team gains possession. Extra points after a touchdown also can be eliminated or swapped with two-point conversion plays. With field goals and extra points out of the picture, kicking is generally not part of the game. Amateur kickers are usually wildly inaccurate, and to avoid any broken windows it’s a good idea to avoid kick-offs.
Instead, have each team start on the 20yard line or at a fifth of the field length if you are not using a 100-yard field. Below are other rule variations that can be implemented to keep your game of touch football fun and fair: — If there is an odd number of players, designate someone to be the “alltime quarterback.” This player will pass the ball for both teams. — Instead of keeping a time clock, have a predetermined number of touchdowns (or points if you are using twopoint conversion plays) that must be reached for a team to win. — To keep play time fair, require that every player must touch the ball once before any other player gets to touch it again. If you are not using an alltime quarterback, be sure to rotate who gets to play QB as well.
— Require that no player can score twice in a row. This will keep the game family friendly and will let everyone have a chance to score a touchdown. — Rushers must wait four “Mississippi” seconds before trying to tag the quarterback. This rule is touch football’s version of an offensive line. Now that you have the rules down, get out there and have some fun! Drill of the week Playing LINEBACKER is a heavy responsibility. There are many simple ways a linebacker can train to increase speed and strength. Jumping rope and quick ladder drills are ways to increase agility needed to react to an offensive play. Having strong upper chest, neck and shoulder areas, as well as a powerful lower body, will provide the strength to tackle a charging running back. Focus on strengthening these areas in order to become a great linebacker.
