Design Build Door Pulls AIA:
ATLANTA+GEORGIA HEADQUARTERS
DESIGN NARRATIVE Paying respect to the materials on AIA Atlanta’s new entry wall, unfinished cold rolled steel and quarter sawn white oak constitute the majority of these architectural objects. The aesthetics of the wall are further reflected in the tectonics of construction by exposing all structural connections. Various opportunities for human interaction are explored. There are multiple areas that can act as a pull. These areas are comprised of either steel or wood and occur at various levels vertically. The decision to pull away and expose the lower portion of the hardwood component portrays the duality of two different materials acting together, yet functioning separately. Each material allows for different experiences within the same object. The steel which is man made, cold to the touch and extremely rigid, serves as the pragmatic structural component and integrates a secondary “left hand” door pull option on the back side of the unit. The hardwood, a natural material, warm, colorful and patterned with a porous grain, was chosen for its resilience, rigidity and beauty. This wood component is intentionally imbedded with shallow dato cuts along the front, side and back. These dato’s occur only in the area of the wood that will be touched the most often. This will result in a haptic quality that elevates the user’s experience with the pull and tactually separates it from the steel counterpart. Finally, brass occurs at locations specific to the connection of the wooden pull and the steel body. The material is both structural and symbolic. A tectonic and visual bridge between the wood and steel, the hand and the object. 1. First 2. Second 3. Third 4. Final
