At almost 100 years old, Esplanade is the iconic hotel with more than just few stories to tell. The Esplanade opened its doors with a grand gala ceremony on April 22, 1925. This amazing Hotel is one of a kind and is by far the best known and most luxurious hotel in Zagreb and the region. Its timeless elegance, sophistication and charm, which back in 1925 attracted passengers of the famous Orient Express, today is considered an elite venue and cultural historic landmark of Zagreb. Known as the temple of comfort and cuisine, during the last 100 years it positively kept up with contemporary trends, while equally fostering the harmony of tradition and the past.

EXCLUSIVELY BUILT FOR THE ORIENT EXPRESS PASSENGERS

In the early 20th century two of the most well-known hotels of the time became far too small for the increasing number of passengers who arrived in Zagreb stepping off the famous Orient Express. In order to meet the changing needs of the city, the

construction development of a new luxurious hotel imposed itself as a priority. The hotel was to be built on a vast open field (Spanish: Esplanade) close to the railway station - once, the only link with Europe and the rest of the world - which was one of the stops of the prestigious Orient Express en-route between Paris-VeniceIstanbul.

In 1917 an international tender was announced which attracted numerous excellent architects of the time. The success came to a German, Otto Rehnig, whose original plans were reworked by Dionis Sunko, who today is considered the architect of this masterpiece of architecture of the “Belle Époque”. The construction of the largest hotel in Zagreb took place over a mere 26 months. The opening ceremony, on 22 April 1925, drew over 200 distinguished guests, including Mayor Heinzel of Zagreb. Journalists wrote words predicting a bright future on an international level, and among the first guests of the hotel was a Mr. Glück (German for happiness), which was an indication that this prediction was to become true. And so it was!

CENTRE OF ZAGREB'S SOCIAL SCENE

The hotel was luxurious, sophisticated, and extremely comfortable, equipped with the latest advances of modern science. There were two hundred rooms available with running hot and cold water, one hundred bathrooms, a phone in every room, numerous apartments, salons, and restaurants with excellent cuisine and a magnificent ballroom decorated with iconic columns and sculptures. The impact that the Esplanade had back then upon the social life of the city is best evidenced by recent common opinion that “once you step inside, the experience is worth mentioning to your grandchildren”. It is not surprising that many generations have spoken in awe of the elegant and magical areas of the hotel.

This “most fashionably appointed hotel of Central Europe” attracted many famous personalities. Various diplomats and world statesmen have stepped through the doors of the Esplanade such as Queen Elizabeth II, Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Richard Nixon, Josephine Baker, Charles Lindbergh and Orson Welles. Recent names include Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, U2, R.E.M, Robbie Williams, Joe Cocker, Sting, Lenny Kravitz, José Carreras, Chris Rea, Sade, Shakira and Maestro Ennio Morricone, not to mention stars of film and TV including Courtney Thorne-Smith, Orlando Bloom, Armand Assante, Hugh Laurie, Rami Malek and a host of others.

Famous sentence of the writer Miroslav Krleža who once said that the ‘Oleander terrace is the border between Balkans and Europe’ best describes the perception of the Esplanade Hotel as one of the most prestigious places in Zagreb and region.

GOLDEN BOOK OF WORLD’S FAMOUS GUESTS

This “most fashionably appointed hotel of Central Europe” attracted many famous personalities. Various diplomats and world statesmen have stepped through the doors of the Esplanade such as Queen Elizabeth II, Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Richard Nixon, Josephine Baker, Charles Lindbergh and Orson Welles. Recent names include Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, U2, R.E.M, Robbie Williams, Joe Cocker, Sting, Lenny Kravitz, José Carreras, Chris Rea, Sade, Shakira and Maestro Ennio Morricone, not to mention stars of film and TV including Courtney Thorne-Smith, Orlando Bloom, Armand Assante, Hugh Laurie, Rami Malek and a host of others. The hotel has often been home to many athletes and sports personalities who have stayed in Zagreb: from David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pep Guardiola to endless famous basketball, handball and football teams. Politicians, diplomats and royalty are frequent hotel guests. First Lady of the United States and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Prince Albert II of Monaco, Princess Anne, Emir of Qatar, Japanese Prince and Princess Akishino, Swedish King Carl Gustaf XVI and Queen Silvia, the Danish Queen Margareta II and Prince Henrik, King Charles and many others. The hotel has also hosted famous Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho, renowned photographer Peter Lindbergh, violinist Julian Rachlin, British artists Gilbert & George, designer Karim Rashid, DJ David Guetta, music producer Dave Clark, musician Maksim Mrvica and many others. These are just some of the distinguished guests who signed the Espla-

nade guestbook and of course, certain celebrities, statesmen, and politicians chose to pass through the hotel incognito.

RETURNING TO ITS ORIGINAL GLORY

In 2002, the Esplanade entered a new phase as the hotel closed its doors followed by a complete renovation. Zagreb experts responsible for shaping the hotel and an architecture design company based in London, called MKV Design, led by award-winning interior designer Maria Vafiadis, had a mission to renovate the hotel and return it to its original glory. Finding original designs and photographs greatly assisted the redesigning of the hotel which finally found the right balance between the Neoclassical and Art Deco style of the existing building and the introduction of modern elements appropriate to a luxury hotel at the beginning of the 21st century. Following two years of extensive restoration and demanding work, the Esplanade Hotel reopen within the familiar splendour and new image. Once again, the Esplanade has regained the title as the centre of the social life of the city, as the hotel has become a favourite meeting place for business people, celebrities, journalists and all those who admire exceptional service and luxurious surroundings.

Dear Readers,

A warm welcome to our autumn / winter edition.

ESTATE & INVESTMENTS

We certainly are living in interesting times. Especially after the recent elections in The USA. The cautionary image of our future, laid out by author Robert Orwell, in his book titled 1984, demonstrates the ability of governments to alter reality and manipulate facts to suit their narrative. By doing so, they introduce ‘alternative facts’ and indulge in ‘doublethink’, attempting thus psychological control of reality through words – perhaps the book was ahead of its time. As stated in the book, “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past”.

We are busily preparing our celebratory 40th edition of The Collection to be released next spring. A milestone only achievable thanks to the support of our advertisers and you, our readers.

This is also the time of year to reflect on the tourism scene in the region in 2024, especially focussing on Croatia and Montenegro which rely inordinately on this fragile industry. Croatia can rest on their laurels at the end of a very successful season. The country can be optimistic also with (finally) exciting new projects underway, such as Marina Resort Cavtat, the first Marriott in Croatia in Opatija, the new Wyndham Grand Novi Vinodolski and many more. The Isolano Cres - Autograph Collection, Pullman Zagreb, Keight Hotel Opatija, and Curio Collection by Hilton were just also opened this season. While my Croatian friends envy the prevalence of international luxury hotel brands in Montenegro, they excel with boutique hotels. From Dubrovnik and Korčula to Hvar, Dugi Otok, and Istria, their boutique properties set a gold standard. A special mention goes to Impresia, a collection of Croatian hotels offering distinct and memorable experiences. Names like Vila Nai 3.3, Maslina Resort, Palace Elisabeth, Lešić Dimitri, Meneghetti, San Canzian, Alhambra, and Ikador deserve applause. In Montenegro, the 2024 tourist season was lacklustre - prices soared, and services fell short of five-star standards. The hardware is there (brands etc), but the software (infrastructure, airports, services) will take considerable time to catch up. Add - ing to the challenges, the increase in VAT on tourism services to 15% is expected to negatively impact the coming season. On a positive note, projects like Horizon at Luštica Bay and Synchro Yards in Porto Montenegro may rekindle investor confidence. Porto Montenegro is poised to become the region’s most

fashionable destination next summer, with several renowned fashion brands making their debut. Meanwhile, Kolašin has the potential to become a new star on Southeast Europe’s tourism map, provided collaboration with the government is strengthened.

We are particularly delighted that small family run businesses like Casa Del Mare Hospitality Group and Forza Hotels are thriving. They’re not just excelling locally but are also prepar - ing to compete in the EU market – we wish them all the best! Serbia has seen modest improvements in its investment climate, thanks to macroeconomic reforms and fiscal discipline. Foreign investment is a government priority, and they’re delivering, especially with the anticipation of EXPO 2027, a project with costs exceeding $2 billion, including ancillary developments like hotels, restaurants and a National stadium. A shining star in Serbia’s hospitality market is The St. Regis Belgrade, occupying the first 11 floors of the iconic Kula Belgrade tower within the Belgrade Waterfront. With 119 rooms, a signature restaurant, a St. Regis Bar, a patisserie, a spa, and more, it brings a new level of luxury to the region. Looking ahead, The Bristol Belgrade is set to open in early 2025, blending rich heritage with contemporary luxury - its Library promises to be a cultural gem. Meanwhile, Belgrade’s real estate market is booming, with prices climbing steadily. All eyes are now on the upcoming Marina Dorćol development.

Albania is buzzing with foreign direct investment, but the absence of luxury brands remains notable. Hopefully, lessons from neighbouring countries will inspire a well-planned tourism strategy. Tirana, however, stands out as a food paradiseevery meal is a delight for the senses.

Slovenia, the green heart of Europe, dazzles with its culinary magic, exceptional wines, and stunning hiking trails. When visiting Slovenia, consider these gems: Chalet Sofija and Boutique Hotel Milka in Kranjska Gora, Vila Planinka in Kranj, the glamping resort Chateau Ramšak near Maribor, Hotel Grad Otočec in Novo Mesto, Kempinski Portorož, or InterContinental Ljubljana in the capital. A. Milan Sudar: I completely agree that both architectural design and atmosphere are essential for any property to stand out, particularly for Square Nine. When it comes to the atmosphere, it is people and the impeccable service they provide which makes a place unique. A sleek, sumptuous design of Square Nine Hotel creates a place of contrast and balance where culture and people come together, and that makes it matchless in many ways, not only in this part of the world but even further. You may think I’m being subjective when it comes to praising our hotel, but our guests’ experiences, their outstanding comments and the fact they keep coming back, as well as numerous accolades we have received to date, are a true testimony of the quality of product we have created and introduced to Belgrade luxury hotel scene.

Q. The lobby is often described as the beating heart of Square Nine, with a warmth that feels like a living room. Could you tell us more about the design and ambiance of the lobby and the experience it creates for your guests?

A. Our lobby is designed to feel like a huge living room where everyone can find their own tranquillity. Every piece of furniture is unique, carefully chosen and placed in our lobby area. A well-praised Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld has done an amaz-

ing job with hotel interior originally and hotel management has continued to carefully maintain it. The Lobby offers a true sense of history, with each hand-picked piece of furniture, from Poul Kjaerholm’s 1956 armchairs to Arne Vodder’s bar chairs, adding depth and character to the space. Focused on iconic pieces from the finest American and Scandinavian designers, beautiful examples can be found also throughout the hotel.

Q. With original mid-century furnishings, Pratesi linens, cashmere blankets, and Diptyque toiletries, Square Nine offers a truly elevated experience. How do these carefully selected details contribute to the hotel’s unique atmosphere?

A. These luxury and carefully selected details are part of the much bigger story the hotel portrays. Beautiful mid-century furnishings and iconic pieces from the finest American and Scandinavian designers are recognized and admired by the guests. When you look at the hotel, you have this wonderful, dynamic and creative building in the center of the city, with one-of-a-kind interior design and superb, personalized service. All these components together create a luxury experience. In my humble opinion, one doesn’t exclude the other.

Q. Impeccable service is a hallmark of the hotel. Can you share some of the ways in which the staff at Square Nine provide attentive, personalized service to meet the needs of today’s luxury travellers?

A. I love when we start talking about service. Service is a big word, and when you add word impeccable it spices things up. I always ask myself what it is that people really want and expect from a hotel such as Square Nine and what we can do to do better and distinguish ourselves from competitors. The concept of service has changed a lot over the past 25 years, which is how long I have worked in hotel industry. The key word that comes to my mind

when we talk about service today is consistency. What works on Mondays, must work the same way every other day. On the other hand, I think of impeccable service as something beyond consistency. That person who goes a step further and delivers personalized service with meticulous attention to detail that touches the guest, creates memories and makes their stay extra special, for me that person has done an impeccable service. It may sound very simple, but in reality, it’s complicated.

Q. The hotel’s restaurants are known for their fine food and attention to detail. Could you share more about the latest menu and any standout dishes or ingredients that reflect Square Nine’s culinary philosophy? And could you suggest one or two favourite dishes that are a must-try for guests?

A. I can proudly present two of our restaurants, The Square and Ebisu, both Michelin recommended. The Square, part of the Best restaurants in Gault Millau guide and JRE association, is situated on the ground floor, just behind the busy Knez Mihajlova Street. Impeccable service, refined ambience and a selection of international fine wines and spirits compliment The Square’s expertly rendered modern European cuisine and a la carte fine dining created by Chef David Šimunić. The Square features sublime Mediterranean garden Piazzetta with serene ambience which adds to a perfect al fresco dining experience.

And as soon as you exit the elevator on the seventh floor of the Square Nine hotel, you immediately step into Ebisu, an intimate and elegant Japanese restaurant where you can enjoy fine views of the city centre. The menu, created by Chef Ryo Suehiro, features a famous Omakase menu, where his creativity and knowledge in connecting the flavours really stand out.

Both restaurants are famous for the quality, usage of locally sourced, organic ingredients. At The Square we change our menu twice a year to keep in line with the seasonal offer of ingredients.

If I need to choose my personal standout dishes, I would go for risotto with wild garlic, Šopska salad and Zucchini moussaka from The Square menu, and the selection of Nigiri, Sea-bass aburi and Japanese hamburger steak from the Ebisu menu.

Q. Square Nine has become a sought-after venue for some of Belgrade’s most important events, including the popular New Year's Matinee. What event spaces does the hotel offer, and how does the team approach hosting high-profile gatherings?

A. Distinguished by its peerless design, elegant atmosphere, excellent food and wine, polished service and attention to detail, Square Nine is Belgrade’s most sophisticated setting for weddings, special occasions, private parties, corporate events and of course a popular New Year’s Matinee. We have started organizing New Year’s Matinee 12 years ago and it has since become a trademark of Square Nine, with incredible food and wine, early afternoon performances, class and elegance loved by so many of our guests and visitors to Belgrade.

When it comes to MICE, Square Nine’s attentive staff, with years of experience, take care of every detail and create unforgettable events of every kind. We bring bespoke personalized service and smart venues, and our clients keep coming back to us, which means we must be doing a good job. Over past three years, we have organized so many cocktails, weddings and dinners in our restaurants that people still talk about to this date. MAGICAL FESTIVE SEASON

While Portonovi may be quieter in winter, it has plenty to offer, especially during the festive season. The resort transforms into a magical place. It is recognized as a destination with one of the biggest New Year trees in the region and the most beautiful decorations at every corner - perfect photo opportunities.

The previous two festive seasons in the resort delighted guests and visitors, leaving them eagerly expecting this year's events. The festive season in Portonovi Resort will begin on December 7, with the New Year Tree Lighting Ceremony, along with performances of children’s choirs and special guests.

From December 21 to January 8, the visitors will enjoy the Portonovi Festive Market, which will be open from 4 PM to 11 PM on weekdays and 11 AM to 11 PM on weekends and holidays. The visitors will have the opportunity to taste the diverse offers of food and beverage - from delicious burgers to mulled wine, hot chocolate, and pancakes. On December 31, the market will work from 11 AM to 6 PM.

Portonovi is famous for the best concerts, so at this year’s festive market opening, there will be a SHOW TIME concert by Big Band, and during the rest of the season, bands Remake, Perpetuum Mobile, Milky Wave, Low Voltage, and Emil Fetahović Band will perform as well as DJs Lucky Dee, Adnanovski, Danilo Radusinović, Shar, DJ Baćko, and a DJ Session with DJs Lucky Dee, Perrot, and a saxophonist. As part of the festive season, on January 8, the talented Džejla Ramović will perform, and January 8 is for the concert of the regional star Petar Grašo. Entrance to all concerts is free of charge.

Kids’ events are an important part of the Portonovi Festive Season. The children will explore the magical Bubble House, filled with bubbles and interactive fun, and the inflatable Jumping Joy castle will surely delight them. Also, on January 6 in Marina Square, the youngest will have the opportunity to meet their favorite mascots.

The platform’s debut in December 2022 gathered over 750 participants in Zagreb, who validated the platform’s mission and set Game Changer on an inspiring path. Only a few months later, in May 2023, Zagreb hosted the first Game Changer Festival, a three-day event drawing more than 1,100 attendees eager to explore technology’s transformative potential. This festival marked the beginning of Game Changer’s influential Awards, designed to honour the most innovative tech companies and visionary individuals making strides in the tech world. Through panels, workshops, and presentations, the festival introduced attendees to groundbreaking technologies in digital design, gaming, and even the role of NFTs in fashion. This format has since evolved, becoming a staple of Game Changer’s mission to bridge the gap between advanced tech and real-world applications that appeal to everyone - from CEOs to students.

EXPANDING ACROSS BORDERS: SUCCESS IN LJUBLJANA AND MONTENEGRO

With its initial success firmly established, Game Changer expanded its reach. The platform introduced a new excitement to Slovenia in December 2023, hosting its first event in Ljubljana, focusing on e-commerce and fintech. Set within the stunning Museum of Modern Art, the event attracted over 450 visitors, who enjoyed dynamic discussions from 30 industry experts across two stages. The event also embraced the holiday season, featuring an Advent market with local delicacies, creating a warm and memorable environment where technology and tradition intertwine.

In July 2024, Game Changer introduced its summer tech festival in Tivat, Montenegro. In three days, this event attracted representatives of Montenegro’s growing tech scene, bringing together leaders, developers, and innovators in Web3, AI, and Travel Tech. This event also included a unique digital art exhibition showcasing pieces from Montenegro’s burgeoning talent, which blended nature with technology in a way that resonated with attendees. The grand gala held at the peak of the Lovćen cable car route was a highlight, gathering over 250 influential figures from the corporate and tech sectors. This gala embodied the elegance and ambition defining Game Changer’s commitment to innovation.

Dear readers, clients and friends

Thank you for being among the first to experience our inaugural Fashion Edition, powered by The Collection Magazine.

It is an honour to introduce myself and share the vision, goals, and values behind this project.

After years abroad - studying Fine Art in the Netherlands, Film in London, and working in the creative industry - I returned to Montenegro to create The Collection Fashion edition.

This is a curated regional fashion guide and a platform working with talent and businesses in fashion, design, beauty and art.

Our values are rooted in storytelling, innovation, valuable imagery, and meaningful connections.

We prioritize engagement over consumption, and creativity over mere product promotion.

My literature teacher often spoke of the importance of returning home to give back to the environment that you grew up in. For me that is Montenegro, whose allure I see exemplified by the story of my father.

After a thriving career as a producer for Paramount Pictures, in the heat of Hollywood’s glam and glits, he accidentally discovered Montenegro and never left again.

The following pages are designed as an Editor’s Diary - a personal glimpse into The Collection Fashion conceptual and visual narrative.

I cannot wait to share with you all the exciting projects we are working on and inviting you to be part of.

WELCOME

This editorial is my first handshake to you. A suitcase or purse is an intimate space, like stepping into someone’s bedroom. My mother and I lived apart, and every time she landed at the airport, I would dive into her purse.

It was my favourite ritual, shaping my sense of style, taste in fragrances, and even little habits like carrying a specific type of gum, throat candy, and believing a red wallet brings luck.

I won’t reveal everything at once. As we get to know each other, the items will become more personal— a shared journey of discovery.

THE DESIGNER WHO SOLD

ZINA: Both of us share the experience of living and studying abroad. It strongly influences creatives, shaping style and values. This experience taught me to value artistic quality in everything-marketing, design, or beyond.

For example, a high-quality perfume becomes more than just a scented liquid; it transforms into an extension of identity, lifestyle, and personal style when paired with an interesting story and artistic value. What are your thoughts on the importance of artistry in fashion?

IGOR: We indeed share a similar path. Returning home after years abroad is both a shock and a responsibility-it demands adapting to and reconciling different values.

Fashion is inherently creative and artistic. Creativity keeps it intriguing, while artistry pushes boundaries. Historically, fashion has always drawn from fine art. To me, it merges sculpture, painting, and functionality. Ethics and responsibility are crucial. Research and continual learning are essential, as no one is born knowing everything.

ZINA: How does this reflect in your atelier?

IGOR: Currently, our focus is on entering the Italian market, participating twice in Milan Fashion Week this year. We also presented our Resort collection in a meadow in Zlatibor to highlight ecological issues. Fashion, especially post-COVID, increasingly values sustainability as an ethical responsibility. It’s vital to listen rather than blindly follow trends. A dress should enhance the person wearing it, not overpower themotherwise, it becomes a “toxic friend.”

- The strength of a brand lies in its longevity, and young creatives need tools to turn their ideas into reality.

ZINA: There’s a growing synergy between fashion and interior design, even among fast fashion brands. My first association is Bauhaus. What’s your take?

IGOR: Fashion reflects societal trends, and during COVID, as we stayed home, interior aesthetics gained prominence. Fashion traditionally focuses outwardly, but this shift toward inner manifestations is refreshing.

ZINA: Trends are integral to defining eras, but their pace today is dizzying. Aside from the Industrial Revolution, what accelerated this change?

IGOR: The 1990s, under Anna Wintour at Vogue. Christian Lacroix meeting denim transformed fashion, leading to the rapid trend cycles we see today. This creates ecological issues and overconsumption. Post-COVID, the industry is slowly valuing craftsmanship, longevity, and continuity-principles championed by Armani, the “gray-haired titan of Olympus.

ZINA: Higher education abroad offers more opportunities, but access remains a luxury. Are there regional institutions that could bridge this gap?

IGOR: We have exceptional individuals rather than institutions. Many succeed abroad but are misunderstood locally. Our vast heritage is underutilized. For example, Montenegro’s traditional costumes offer extraordinary potential for craftsmanship.

Art must be rebellious-not destructively, but creatively-to push boundaries. Our atelier supports young apprentices, celebrating their unique, poetic perspectives.

ZINA: How can we support young talent?

IGOR: Platforms, not events, are key. A platform should provide practical experience with textiles, from idea to market placement.

ZINA: Balancing artistic and commercial value can be challenging. How do you find the golden middle ground?

Q. The Collection Magazine: Wellness is a fundamental aspect of Technogym's identity. Could you share how this philosophy resonates with you on a personal level?

A. Nerio Alessandri: In 1993 in a sector dominated by the stereotypes of fitness and body building we launched a new lifestyle: wellness which includes regular physical exercise, healthy nutrition and a positive mental approach. Wellness has its roots deep in the Italian culture starting from the ancient Roman saying of “mens sana in corpore sano” (healthy mind in healthy body). Being an Italian, I embrace this culture and lifestyle in every moment of my life.

Q. Technogym is renowned for integrating exceptional design with functionality in its products. How does this focus on aesthetic design influence your strategic decisions and product development? Over the past decade, wellness has become a significant trend. How has this surge in wellness consciousness influenced your strategies and innovations at Technogym?

A. If fitness is just functional and it means to look good, wellness is instead a holistic lifestyle and means feeling good. The emotional component is very important. Working out in a harmonious and attractive environment certainly improves the approach to the fitness experience. That is why our equipment is not only highly innovative and high-performance, but also beautiful to look at, because design and aesthetics are essential.

Q. With the growing buzz around Artificial Intelligence, how do you envision integrating AI into Technogym’s offerings? What impact could this have on user experience and product development?

A. Innovation has always been the engine that drives Technogym's growth. Over the years, we've grown from a product company into an electronics company, then a digital company, into a media company and into the development of on-demand training content. Artificial intelligence is a technology we've been using for years, and it allows us through the Technogym App and our entire connected ecosystem to personalise the training experience to the needs, goals and passions of each individual.

Q. Looking ahead, what new trends do you see emerging in the fitness and wellness industry? How is Technogym preparing to meet these future demands?

A. Today, health is more than ever the number one priority for people. There is an increased awareness of the benefit of physical exercise among the population. People are more informed, but also at an institutional level governments and local authorities are understanding that investing in health and prevention is a great tool to reduce healthcare costs that will be unsustainable going forward since the population will get older and older. The future is all about personalization and consumers have evolved. They are more and more informed and demanding, they expect a personalized experience tailor made on their needs and they want to connect with communities sharing their interests and passions. Bringing Fibre-Reinforced Ceramics

To Watch Cases And Forward To New Applications In Space

In a joint development project, IWC Schaffhausen and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have developed the first watch cases made from a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material. Fibre-reinforced ceramics combine the hardness and scratch-resistance of conventional ceramic with the benefits of fibre composite materials, like high damage tolerance and extreme resistance to temperature shocks. The knowledge gained from this engineering collaboration helped DLR to further improve their smaller scale fibre-reinforced ceramic components for satellite propulsion systems. At an event at the DLR site in Stuttgart, representatives from the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer and the renowned research institution shared exclusive insights into their collaboration.

Since the 1980s, IWC Schaffhausen has acquired a comprehensive expertise in advanced materials. One area of focus is ceramic. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer was a pioneer in the use of this hard, scratch-resistant material when it introduced the first wristwatch with a black zirconium oxide case in 1986. Since then, IWC has continuously innovated in the field. Important milestones included watch cases made of brown silicon nitride ceramic, black boron carbide ceramic, various coloured ceramics, and recently, a luminous ceramic called Ceralume®. In 2013, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer and the renowned German Aerospace Center research institution (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) embarked on an engineer-

ing collaboration to jointly develop the first watch cases made of a ceramic matrix composite (CMC).

Fibre-reinforced ceramic is a relatively new class of materials. It combines the advantages of conventional ceramics, like hardness and wear resistance, with additional benefits such as a very high tolerance to damage. As the material is also extremely resistant to thermal shocks, DLR had already used it for making larger rocket components and thermal protection systems for reusable space vehicles. However, the researchers were looking to adapt and practice their innovative short fibre pressing technology to make smaller and near net shape CMC parts, and a watch case was the perfect candidate for this endeavour. In close collaboration with IWC Schaffhausen’s engineering division, XPL, the researchers at the DLR Institute of Structures and Design in Stuttgart engineered a new manufacturing process to manufacture the first IWC watch cases made of fibre reinforced ceramic. The collaboration turned out to be a success for both partners: IWC Schaffhausen was able to add CMC to its growing portfolio of advanced case materials, and, thanks to the expertise it gained working with small-scale CMC components, DLR was able to open up into new applications for space.

A HIGHLY COMPLEX MANUFACTURING PROCESS

The starting point for producing a CMC watch case is a conventional carbon fibre-reinforced polymer. Carbon fibres are cut up, infiltrated with a resin, pressed in a mould and baked. To make a preform in the approximate shape of the watch case, DLR employed and adapted its innovative short-fibre pressing technology. In a high temperature process called pyrolysis, lasting up to several days, the polymer matrix is subsequently converted to a carbon matrix. This results in a porous carbon fibre-reinforced carbon material. In the next step called siliconisation, silicon crystals are placed on top of the component, before it is heated in an oven. The silicon is pulled into the cavities and chemically reacts with the carbon, creating a new matrix consisting of silicon carbide ceramic. From this stage onward, the case has a hardness value of about 2400 Vickers and can only be machined using diamond tools.

INSIGHTS INTO A SUCCESSFUL ENGINEERING COLLABORATION

To share insights into this successful development project, IWC Schaffhausen and DLR organised an event at the DLR’s Institute of Structures and Design in Stuttgart. Presentations by representatives from IWC and DLR explored the complex manufacturing process for CMC watch cases, while also highlighting the significance of engineering collaborations and the transfer of technology from research to new applications in different industries. The presentations were followed by a tour of DLR’s research facilities, where visitors could take a closer look at the different steps in the CMC manufacturing process. IWC also showcased the Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63 (Ref. IW506201). A BRIDGE BETWEEN TRADITION AND DIGITALISATION:

For over 75 years, the E-Class has set the standard for midrange luxury saloons. In 2023, Mercedes-Benz will open a new chapter for the business saloon: the new E-Class points the way in the transition from the combustion engine to electric drive. At the same time, its new electronics architecture allows a comprehensive digital user experience. The first saloon models of the 214 series will arrive at the European sales partners in autumn 2023.

CLASSIC PROPORTIONS AND SPECIAL CHARACTER LINES IN THE EXTERIOR DESIGN

The new E-Class has the proportions of a classic threebox saloon: the short front overhang and long bonnet are followed by a greenhouse which is set well back. The "cabbackward" design is rounded off by the well-proportioned rear overhang.

A black panel-like surface connects the radiator grille with the headlamps.. The three-dimensionally designed radiator grille is either progressive or classic, depending on the equipment line. The new E-Class has high-performance LED headlamps as standard. As an optional extra, DIGITAL LIGHT is available without and with a projection function. All headlamp variants offer a distinctive day and night design. As a typical feature of the brand, the daytime running lights take the shape of an eyebrow. Powerdomes accentuate the bonnet.

The side view shows off the harmonious proportions and the distinctive "cab-backward" design to particularly good effect. The flush-fitting door handles familiar from the luxury MercedesBenz models are available as an option. The two separate character lines on the side emphasise the car's sporty character.

Highlights at the rear include the two-section LED lights with a new contour and special design: the star motif in both light units provides a special day and night design.

MBUX SUPERSCREEN AS A HIGHLIGHT OF THE INTERIOR DESIGN

The dashboard makes for the digital experience in the interior. If the E-Class is equipped with the optional front passenger screen, the large glass surface of the MBUX Superscreen extends to the central display. Visually detached from this is the driver's display in the driver's field of vision. The models without a passenger display feature a large trim element that extends to the centre. Visually detached, the central display appears to float above the concave surface of this trim element.

The front section of the instrument panel is illuminated by the light strip of the Active Ambient Lighting. This runs in a wide arc from the windscreen, past the A-pillars and into the doors. This creates a generous feeling of space. An apparently free-floating control array in the upper section of the door panels matches the look of the glass surfaces of the screens.

The door centre panel merges seamlessly into the armrest with a concave sweep. The front section here is designed as a metallic high-tech element. It serves as a grab and closing handle, and incorporates the switches for the power windows. Another highlight is the free-floating control array incorporating the door opener and the controls for the seat functions.

The contours of the seat surface and backrest flow elegantly from the inside to the outside, and appear to float above the base of the seat thanks to their layer design. Indented vertical lines follow the outer contour, widening out towards the top.

favourites in its segment. The driver enjoys five millimetres more headroom than in the preceding model. The rear passengers particularly benefit from the two centimetre longer wheelbase: Kneeroom and maximum legroom are increased by 10 and 17 millimetres, respectively. The increase in elbow width in the rear is even greater: it is now 1519 millimetres. This is an increase by 25 millimetres, and almost S-class level. The luggage capacity is up to 540 litres.

HALF OF THE ENGINE VARIANTS ARE PLUG-IN HYBRIDS

Thanks to systematic electrification and intelligent downsizing, the new E-Class sets new standards in efficiency. Half of all the models will be fourth-generation plug-in hybrids. The model range already achieves this high proportion at market launch. Three of the six E-Class versions combine the advantages of a vehicle with combustion engine with those of an electric car.

The combustion engines are four and six-cylinder units from the current modular Mercedes-Benz engine family FAME (Family of Modular Engines). Accordingly, the engine range plays a major role in the flexibility of the international production network, with needs-based electrification.

The new E-Class is available with the Technology package as an option. This includes the all-round AIRMATIC air suspension system with ADS+ continuously adjustable damping and rearaxle steering. The AIRMATIC suspension with air springs and adaptive ADS+ dampers responds very sensitively. Level control is another feature of AIRMATIC. It keeps the ground clearance constant irrespective of the vehicle load, but also makes changes when needed.

The new E-Class is especially agile and stable with the optional rear-axle steering and the accompanying, more direct steering ratio at the front axle. The steering angle at the rear axle is 4.5 degrees. This reduces the turning circle by up to 90 centimetres.

IMPRESSIVE, IMMERSIVE ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE

Music, games and streaming content can be experienced with almost all the senses in the E-Class . Thanks to digital innovations in the interior, the E-Class is now more intelligent, achieving a new dimension of personalisation and interaction. At the same time, the electronic architecture is more software-driven and less hardware-driven.

THE DIGITAL VEHICLE KEY IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE IPHONE AND APPLE® WATCH

With the Digital Vehicle Key, the E-Class can be started and locked simply by the driver carrying a compatible device with them. Key sharing is also possible: various digital channels can be used to invite family members or friends to use the E-Class. In doing so, the vehicle owner can assign different rights, granting only access to the vehicle or also allowing it to be driven. The vehicle can recognise several users at once, and the Digital Vehicle Key can be shared by up to 16 persons.

NEW THIRD-PARTY APPS PLUS SELFIE AND VIDEO CAMERA

The software experts at Mercedes-Benz have developed a new compatibility layer that allows the installation of third-party apps. The following apps are available on the central display on the launch of the E-Class : the entertainment platform "TikTok", the game "Angry Birds", the collaborative application "Webex" and the office application "Zoom", as well as the browser "Vivaldi". In addition, the ZYNC entertainment portal (optionally) offers video streaming, on-demand content, interactive experiences, local video programmes, sports, news, games and much more on the central and passenger displays, via one user interface.

LOCALISATION AND THE EVOLVING GLOBAL LUXURY LANDSCAPE

Luxury retail store opening slowed in 2024. The only market type to buck this trend was in mixed use resorts. With new openings on a par with that seen the previous year meant its share of new openings globally increased to 8%, highlighting the continued strategy by a number of luxury brands to get closer to where their customers live and play. The confluence of luxury retail is expected to be the prime driver openings in the coming years.

Over the last eight years of tracking and analysing luxury store expansion globally, Savills has seen the customer become absolutely central when it comes to real estate strategy. Not just in terms of the store and brand experience but also in terms of the geography of new stores, evident in a greater focus on ‘local’ market fundamentals and that of specific opportunities.

RESORT MARKETS MAINTAINED THEIR APPEAL TO EXPANSIVE LUXURY BRANDS IN 2023

The continued appetite from brands to get close to where their customers live and play meant resort markets was the only market type not to see a slowing in new openings.

Nearly all market types saw a slowing in new store activity in 2023. This was most pronounced for Global Alpha Cities with new store activity down 14% year-on-year, albeit much of this is down to availability constraints in European Alpha cities rather than reflecting a change in strategy by luxury brands. Domesticfocused markets, largely in China, also saw activity slow.

In terms of the geography of these resort markets, European destinations accounted for a sizeable 26% share. But it was China that dominated with significant activity on Hainan Island,

And while there are headwinds facing the global luxury retail market, these will likely prove cyclical, reflecting a normalisation in spend. Perspective is needed as there has been no material change to the fundamentals driving luxury spend; forecasts still point to average annual growth of between 4% to 8% by 2030 (Bain & Company). Likewise, store expansion slowed last year on the back of a sharp acceleration post-pandemic. However, this was not universal across all markets.

The greater focus on the customer did mean we saw resort market expansion continue last year as brands looked to gain greater exposure in locations where their customers live and play. This does come with its challenges, namely the limited access to appropriate real estate. We delve into how luxury hotel expansion may help to mitigate some of these availability pressures and what it could mean for luxury retail spend.

In our region, we are seeing this trend clearly with luxury retail offerings prevalent in places such as Porto Montenegro, Belgrade Waterfront and elsewhere.

The challenge of resort market expansion, however, is access to appropriate real estate. In the case of Europe, this challenge may be resolved, to a certain extent, by new luxury hotel development in resort markets that encompass ancillary retail space.

This broadening footprint of ultra-luxury hotels holds several benefits for expansive luxury retail brands looking at these markets; the first is bringing more wealthy travellers into these markets, the second is their potential to deliver retail space as part of the wider hotel development into what are often highly constrained markets from a retail perspective or in some cases have no existing high-quality retail offer. A prime example of a city missing the 'software' of appealing shopping for HNWI is undoubtedly Dubrovnik, which has completely missed the mark in this area.

Whether it’s winter sports or a beach holiday, having access to a breadth of retail offerings remains a key priority for holidaymakers. In Europe’s wealthy ski and summer hotspots, luxury retail in particular has capitalised from this trend by venturing further into our leisure time.

Luxury store openings in resort markets doubled between 2022 and 2023; almost four times the average global rate pre-pandemic. Designer brands including Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Burberry, Bvlgari and Zimmerman have joined the major brands of LVMH, Richemont and Armani, in strategically choosing leisure destinations to connect with their target audience.

The dominance of the big luxury groups continued with the majority taking a more selective approach to store expansion.

The big three groups (LVMH, Richemont, Kering) continued to dominate new store openings globally in 2023, with them ac-

counting for 39% of all new openings, up on their 32% share in 2019. OTB continued to move up the ranking driven by recent brand acquisitions and investments. Their recently quoted aspirations to list by Q1 2025 is no doubt also shaping this acceleration in new store activity.

This increase is a factor of both brand demand and increased supply as luxury resorts and hotels increasingly look to maximise their real estate by creating retail opportunities on campus to satisfy their guests’ needs.

Locating and aligning with the resort markets also allows brands to expand their ranges and product offerings – a great example being the Armani Neve range which was backed by a pop-up property strategy covering European resorts including Courchevel, St. Moritz, Crans-Montana and Megève.

It’s not just about retail pop-ups. Savills research into alpine destinations reveals that Aspen, Colorado, has the highest number of permanent luxury stores, with nine major brands from Ralph Lauren to Van Cleef & Arpels, Dior and Louis Vuitton. Over the pandemic, luxury retailers that once looked to the alpine destinations for seasonal pop-ups started progressively committing to larger, long-term brick-and-mortar spaces; new entrants include Balenciaga and Overland Sheepskin Co.

Looking ahead, leisure travel is still in growth mode. Brands that are tapping into the high levels of footfall while carefully aligning themselves to the seasonal and cultural context of ski and summer hubs, inevitably strengthen their identities on the international stage.

LOCALISATION OF LUXURY: THE KEY TRENDS RISING APPEAL OF LUXURY RESORTS

Luxury travel had a global market value of US$1.2 trillion in 2021, with forecasts suggesting this could increase by 7.6% per annum by 2030 (Deloitte, Future of Luxury Travel 2023). This rate of growth would be at the upper end of that forecast for spending on personal luxury goods, demonstrating the evolution in wider luxury spending trends and the desire of brands to capitalise on these. From a store perspective, this has historically meant a focus on cities with large international tourist arrivals such as London, Paris and Hong Kong. This will continue to be the case; however, sun and ski resorts markets are moving up the agenda, supported in part by the growing footprint of ultra-luxury hotels in resort markets. New openings by jewellery brands were up 30%, albeit reflecting growth off a low base.
