2015 Education Through Music

‘ Dear Friends, Tonight we are grateful and honored to have you here as we celebrate our success in bringing music education to thousands of students in New York City. Education Through Music (ETM) is proud to work towards a future where every child has access to quality music education, a goal we could not pursue without your generous support. We believe that every child deserves to have the magic of music in their lives. Music education goes far beyond mere teaching of the technical skills or providing an after-school program. ETM strongly believes that music education has the ability to radically improve academic achievement, students’ motivation to learn and explore, and it has an exceptional ability to increase self-confidence and foster creativity. We would also like to express our gratitude to our long-time supporter and ETM board member Katherine D. Elliott. Ms. Elliott has a long-standing commitment to the arts and education and her work as a board member has been invaluable. On behalf of the board and staff of Education Through Music, we thank you for joining us in support of the over 20,000 students in the schools we serve.

Jim Papoulis This year, Education Through Music commissioned the piece, “Music Makes Me,” by composer Jim Papoulis. His inspiration for this song came from ETM’s mission to use music as a catalyst to help children succeed in school and in life. Jim Papoulis composes in many genres and is known for work that combines contemporary, classical, and world sounds. He has made significant contributions to choral music by revitalizing the choral repertoire with songs whose roots are classical and world, with voicing that incorporates lead vocalists with choirs, vocal percussion, and world rhythms. His choral work often is sung from the perspective of the singer, and is constantly inspired by the work he does through the Foundation for Small Voices. He firmly believes that music can heal, educate, celebrate, and empower the lives of children. Through the Foundation for Small Voices, he has conducted songwriting workshops with choirs from the United States, China, Japan, Tanzania, Mexico, Kenya, Dominican Republic, Haiti, England, Norway, Canada, France, Ireland, Bosnia, Jordan, Australia, Dubai, and Greece. He has worked with choirs and ensembles on all continents and from all walks of life, and has also worked with: Aretha Franklin, Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Beyonce, the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, London Boys Choir, London Symphony, Beijing Children’s Choir, Faith Hill, Natalie Cole, Snoop Dogg, Kronos String Quartet, Tokyo String Quartet, Moscow Philharmonic, Portland Symphony, and New World Symphony. His music has recently been featured at: the Beijing Olympics; Give Us Hope, on permanent exhibit at the 911 Museum in New York; 911 Anniversary Concerts throughout the world, including New York, Moscow, Tokyo, Beijing, London, Oslo, Paris, Shanghai, Rio, Rome, Salzburg, St. Petersburg, Dubai, and Delhi; the 2008 Presidential Inauguaration; the Pope’s nationally televised visit to Yankee Stadium; and the World Cup South Africa, 2010.

Peter Cincotti Peter Cincotti, singer-songwriter-pianist and native New Yorker, began playing piano at the age of three. While in high school, he regularly performed in clubs throughout Manhattan and by the age of 18 was being called “one of the most promising singer-pianists of the next generation” by the New York Times. In 2003, Cincotti’s debut album, produced by the legendary Phil Ramone, reached #1 on the Billboard jazz charts, making Cincotti the youngest artist ever to do so. This led to acclaimed performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, Paris’ Le’ Olympia, The Montreux Festival (where he won an award in their renown piano competition), London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, and many other prestigious venues around the world. Cincotti made his acting debut in the Kevin Spacey film Beyond the Sea, and also contributed to the film’s soundtrack. He then made a cameo appearance in the blockbuster film Spider-Man 2, and soon after became the face of Ermenegildo Zegna, promoting their 2004/2005 fashion campaign. His original song “December Boys” was featured in the Australian film of the same title, starring Daniel Radcliffe. In 2006, Cincotti teamed up with 14-time Grammy Award winner, David Foster, to record his first album of all original material for Warner Brothers Records entitled “East Of Angel Town.” His single, “Goodbye Philadelphia,” took the airwaves by storm reaching the Top Ten on radio playlists throughout Europe, and in the Spring of 2009, Cincotti brought the album to the United States by joining the artist Seal on his sold out American tour. Cincotti currently appears as himself in season three of the award-winning Netflix series, House of Cards, singing a duet with the President himself, Kevin Spacey. In April of 2015, he performed with Sting and Annie Lennox at the Old Vic Theater Gala in a tribute to Mr. Spacey.
