2018 Children’s Benefit Gala Goes a Little Bit Country ETM honored country music executive and CMA Foundation Chairman Joe Galante. Country music legend Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn hosted the evening with performances by Randy Owen of ALABAMA, The Warren Brothers and ETM partner school students. Education Through Music celebrated its annual Children’s Benefit Gala on June 25th at Cipriani 42nd Street, honoring music industry executive, Joe Galante, for his remarkable impact on music education in New York City and at a national level. Galante told the packed room, “Our goal is to make sure that in this country every child gets access to quality music education.” The event helped to ensure that more children do get access, raising $800,000 to support ETM’s growing roster of schools and students. Kix Brooks, of CMA-award winning duo Brooks & Dunn, served as the event’s host and spoke on the importance of Continued on page 2

music education. The night featured performances by ETM partner school ensembles, including a choir from P.S. 154 in Queens, joined by NBC’s The Voice contestant and ETM alumnus Brandon Brown, and an orchestra of students and alumni from M.S. 180 in the Bronx. These alumni continue to practice and play music even after having graduated from their ETM partner middle school. Mr. Brown spoke to the audience about his ETM experience, explaining how a quality music program has the ability to change students’ lives. “Music gave me something to look forward to when going to school,” Brown continued. Referring to his fellow alumni, he noted, “The lessons we learned in music class stick with us forever.” ETM partner school students performed the song, “If There Was No Music,” written by country music songwriter and Grammy Award winner Liz Rose. ETM Festival Expands to Three Days at Lehman College For the first time, the ETM Festival occurred over a three-day period. Over 1,700 students performed at the Lehman Center for Performing Arts in the Bronx to celebrate their musical achievements over the past year. It was ETM’s largest festival to date, including nine orchestras, eight choirs and 14 bands from partner elementary and middle schools in Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. The three-day event featured performances by orchestras on June 12th, bands on June 13th and choirs on June 14th. The attendees could feel the students’ excitement as they prepared to take the stage. Between performances, students enthusiastically raised their hands to answer music themed trivia
questions. The Festival was a wonderful opportunity to witness the impact that music education has on students, transforming them into confident musicians. Sanaya and Yasiris, students at P.S. 103 in the Bronx, were grateful for the opportunity to perform at Lehman College. “It was my first time performing in front of more than 35 people,” said, Sanaya, adding, “I would have never done this without my music teacher and ETM.” “Thanks to ETM and Mr. Dolberry, I have learned so much about music,” remarked Yasiris. Following each performance, an ETM Festival medal was presented by Goldman Sachs and Apple employee volunteers to each student for their hard work and musical

accomplishments. Each music director received a trophy to celebrate their school’s musical victories. “We are excited to celebrate the accomplishments of our students at our 6th annual ETM Festival which showcases our partner school students’ outstanding musical achievements,” says ETM Executive Director Katherine Damkohler. “It is so gratifying to witness the growth of these students who have worked diligently to learn their instruments and repertoire. The Festival gives students the opportunity to showcase all their hard work for a crowd of supporters from their communities.”
