Quarterly news from Education Through Music
A Blueprint for Teacher Success In his statement on the importance of teacher preparation programs this October, U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King stated, “As an educator, I know that one of the strongest in-school influences on students is the teacher in front of the classroom.” Quality music education requires teachers who are not only musically talented, but are dedicated and can engage students in the overall learning process. To foster an accomplished workforce, Education Through Music provides teachers with the support and skills necessary to better serve students and advance their careers. “Strengthening music teachers’ skills is a priority for ETM and a key to our program’s success,” said Peter Pauliks, Director of Programs. “We believe every child deserves access to high-quality music education, and at its core are qualified and well-trained music teachers.” MENTORING One way ETM is cultivating teachers’ talents is through personalized mentorship. This year, ETM hired eight new music teacher mentors to guide music teachers
in refining teaching skills, achieving professional goals and overcoming classroom challenges. Erin Giacinto and Ulises Solano, two seasoned ETM music teachers, joined the staff with in-depth knowledge of ETM’s comprehensive curriculum. By hiring teachers who have firsthand experience teaching under its program, ETM is able to better support its teachers’ growth. “Being a teacher with ETM has been such an amazing experience because of the support and professional development provided,” said Giacinto. “One of the biggest sup-
ports that helped me grow exponentially as a teacher was my mentor. It has been very exciting for me to transition into being a mentor for our teachers and to give them the same invaluable support that I received in my teaching.” PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ETM furthers its ongoing support by providing music teachers with a series of professional development sessions to keep them current on instructional approaches. This past summer, ETM held two large-scale Continued on page 2

ETM Academy, ETM’s largest conference held during late August, featured experts who provided fundamental insights on creating inclusive music classrooms for all students. The training’s keynote speaker, national autism expert Dr. Alice Hammel, presented teachers with the necessary skills to build classrooms that support students of all ability levels. The workshop explored why differences in cognition and communication affect students with special needs, as well as how teachers can support students with autism spectrum disorder while catering to all students. Other session topics included recognizing social structures in the classroom, music pedagogy, student engagement and rehearsal strategies. Along with its music teachers, ETM reached out to teachers across New York City for its first Orff Schulwerk course, providing them with an additional teaching technique that further extends students’ creativity beyond the classroom. Ryan McTernan, ETM music teacher, says professional development courses like ETM Academy and the Orff Schulwerk training have helped him grow as a teacher. “I worked for two years developing a music program at a school in NYC. A Principal’s Perspective: A New Beginning at P.S. 51
P.S. 51 Principal Dr. Min Hong reads with students.
Dr. Min Hong, principal of P.S. 51 in the Bronx, began partnering with ETM after she learned about ETM’s programs from an existing partner school principal. “When this principal shared stories about the program and its impact on her school,”
Dr. Hong explained, “I immediately sensed a connection to ETM’s program. I realized that ETM is naturally aligned with the academic, social and emotional mission and beliefs of my school. I partner with ETM because of their dedication to urban educa-
ETM partner school P.S. 48 in the Bronx has bragging rights, thanks to the Recording Academy and Grammy Foundation. Music Teacher Melissa Salguero is one of 25 national semifinalists for the Grammy Educator Award. The Award was created to recognize “current educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education.” Through music, Melissa teaches life skills such as teamwork, humility, leadership and respect. Her mission is to make students into lifelong music lovers so that they become community members who appreciate music and support the arts. The 25 semifinalists come from 25 cities in 16 states. More than
4,500 teachers were nominated for the award. Ten finalists will be announced in December. One winner will be flown to Los Angeles to be recognized during Grammy Week, and will attend the 59th Grammy Awards Ceremony and receive a
tion, quality instruction and the belief that all children deserve to succeed. Why wouldn’t any principal want all this for their students? It is one of the best gifts I can offer my students.” Dr. Hong has been impressed by the way the music program is already impacting her school. “Now there is a sense of deep appreciation for music in the school. The structure for music lessons are always aligned to the standards. Music classes are promoting a high level of student engagement and interest.” Dr. Hong revealed the impact the program has had on her, too. “The most fulfilling part of being a part of ETM is that I have found colleagues, such as other ETM principals, who are my thought partners in this important journey of educating the children of New York City.”
P.S. 48 Music Teacher Named Grammy Educator Award Semifinalist $10,000 honorarium. Newest Music Technology Lab Unveiled at M.S. 529 in the Bronx
City Council Member Andy King, One World Middle School Principal Patricia Wynne and student ambassadors unveil the new music technology lab.
Education Through Music, in partnership with One World Middle School M.S. 529 in the Bronx, opened a new, state-of-the-art music technology lab on October 6, 2016. This is the fourth Music Technology Lab established at an ETM partner school in the last five years. ETM partner school technology labs
“This lab continues our commitment to ensure that each student has the best educational experience possible.” feature the latest music-making equipment, allowing students to learn, explore and create music in a project-based learning environment while honing basic music skills. “Nearly all kids listen to music outside of school – it is everywhere. Through these technology labs, students become the music makers, not just music listeners. They are able
to satisfy national and local curricular requirements, while relating it to their own life experiences,” comments Peter Pauliks, Director of Programs for Education Through Music. At the M.S. 529 ribbon cutting ceremony, guests were invited to take part in a hands-on demonstration led by Pauliks to test the lab’s capabilities and understand how technology in the classroom enhances music learning and creativity. Participants interacted with the following components at each of the 32 workstations: • 27-inch Apple iMac computer • Korg M50-61 note MIDI keyboard • Saffire Pro40 audio interface by Focusrite • Yamaha electric/acoustic guitar • Peripole tenor ukulele • Shure SM58 microphone “One World Middle School is thrilled to have this state-of-the-art classroom to inspire student learning through both technology and music,” said Patricia Wynne, M.S. 529 principal. “This lab continues our commitment to ensure that each student
has the best educational experience possible.” Wynne was joined at the event by City Council Member Andy King; Paul King, Executive Director of the Office of Arts and Special Projects for the NYC Department of Education; Barbara Murray, Director of Music for the NYC Department of Education; M.S. 529 student ambassadors, and ETM Board members and guests. “Through music and art, we find the next Picasso,” said Andy King. “Through music and art, we find the great mind that decides that they want to find a cure for something that we can’t figure out today. So, I’m just so grateful to be a part of whatever I can do to find and place some funding that will help children develop and be stronger adults.” The lab was made possible by government funding to the school.
