Such astonishing works of art where hard rocks have been converted into instruments versifying seven notes of music, actually exist at Hampi, bearing a testimony to our splendid heritage. Situated in the southern state of Karnataka is a small town called Hospet (roughly 350 kms from Bengaluru). Nearly 12 km from Hospet lay remnants of the very famous legendary city of Hampi. If one wants to perceive how time evades through the solitude of a city that was once flourishing, buzzing with life and exhibited such grandeur to be even called “the eastern Rome” by western travelers—then a walk through the avenues of Hampi calls for it. The havelis, the houses, gateways, arches, temples, markets, water tanks, all lay scattered inside a 15-km radius as intact as they would have been in their past glory. Hampi is like a dream; forlorn when its splendour elapsed the slumber. Prospering on the banks of river Tungabhadra, Hampi was the capital city of the prosperous Vijayanagara Empire that was established in the year 1336 AD. It was ruled by the great king Krishnadevraya for the period ranging

One particularly captivating feature of Hampi is a neatly constructed haat (market place) that lines the avenue stretching on both sides of the Virupaksha Temple. Similarly small rock cut shops embellish a broad pathway leading to the Temple, making

it look like some locale set for the shooting of a period film. So well preserved are the shops that it really isn’t hard to imagine a picture complete with a busy street, a routine sombre crowd buying necessities from obliging shop-owners. Hampi in fact, has an aura of overhung nostalgia that makes it an ode to be remembered which even time fails to forget. Uniqueness of this erstwhile splendid city has prompted UNESCO to declare it a world Heritage site listed as the ‘group of monuments at Hampi’. Krishnadevraya was as devout a king as he was an admirer of art. He festooned Hampi with beautiful buildings, finely decorated prasadas, pompous faith invoking temples and mandapas adorned with deities depicting pauranik sequences in various postures. One of these several temples is Sri Vittal Swami mandir (dedicated to Lord Krishna). This temple’s backyard has a Rangashaala wherein stand the magical, musical pillars. The Rangashaala (meant for the dances devoted to the deity) comprises of three prasadas—two small and one fairly large. An interesting feature of these quadrilateral prasadas is that they look similar from every angle. They stand on numerous pillars or stambhas starting from the base till roof. Filling the

distance between the top and bottom kalashas of these stambhas are seven thin pillars encircling a central thicker one. Strike these thin pillars and they will sing. elegantly crafted chariots have stone horses, stone thrones and stone wheels which can actually move on their axis also carved out of stone. There remains a lot more to be said about the artistic remnants of this ancient city of Hampi. The bewildered eyes of an onlooker may often fail to record every bit of exquisite charm they are treated to. Be it the fantastic buildings soaked in their own melancholy siesta, the scenic serenity complimented by the rocky Tungabhadra banks, or the humble southern environs toning the finer sectors of the heartâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;everything seems to be just out of this world. To experience the loveliness of Hampi, one has to travel along the cloud covered waters of Tungabhadra; scale the splendid rocky hills of the Deccan plateau, explore the supremely erected temples, dwellings, markets, feel the charisma of this paradise co-constructed by man and nature and then admire our legacy. very day in this wonderful place starts with the famous “Bula”, a common Fijian greeting used when meeting friends and welcoming guests. Each time that happened, our transition from being their guests to becoming their friends took place. And it set the mood for our vacation to the country which is a stunning archipelago of 322 islands and 500 islets nestled between the South Pacific Ocean and the Koro Sea. Cultural Surprises Fiji is also a country of great cultural diversity and ancient traditions. It draws its culture from a unique blend of Melanesian and Polynesian tradition as well as the influences of European and Indian settlements, dating back to the early 19th century. Our first stop was to the Visitors Bureau for earning a ‘Fellowship of Kava Drinkers’ certificate by sampling the local brew called Kava. A common ceremonial drink, Kava is made from pepper tree root

Reputed to calm the day’s stresses and aid peaceful sleep, it was passed around our group in a tanoa, a large wooden bowl carved from Vesi hardwood. I thought it looked like muddy water and after drinking it, I felt lethargic, my tongue tingled and my head went fuzzy as its antidepressant ability got me into a tranquil state. And mind you, Kava is non alcoholic and Fijians consume it like we Indians drink tea or in social gatherings beer. I guess Kava could be responsible to a large extent for the perpetual smiles on Fijian faces and their state of happiness earning Fiji the nickname of the land of smiles. Shortly the effects of Kava wore off and we were back to our exploring selves, eager to take in as much of the local culture as we could. Pronounced ‘mehkay’ we loved the combination of dance and cyclic musical chanting which was the Fijian way of narrating stories of ancient gods or of war victories or everyday life. While women did fan dances, the men were aggressively strong with their spear or club dances transporting us into an era of battle and traditional war music in the form of the steady beating of sticks. It was both menacing and enjoyable. Meke is performed all over the country, with slight variations from region to region in dress, song and dance. Most hotels and resorts organise Fijian cultural nights, where a half hour of Meke and food cooked the traditional way of lovo is prepared. Lovo is an earth underground oven of hot rocks where the food is slow roasted to perfection. Food Lover’s Paradise Fijian cuisine is a delicious mix of influences, with Indian, Chinese and European dishes reinterpreted with a distinct South Pacific flavour. The food utilises Fiji produce of deep sea fish and reef fish, Nadi river clams, eggplant that grows everywhere, wild bananas, mushrooms and fresh herbs that grow all the year round. During our stay we sampled lobster bisque with shaved truffle, roast lamb and lemon tart, cappuccino of local freshwater clam in wild banana cream, blended coconut milk and lemon grass, opakapaka (deep sea snapper) with coconut sauce, wild tomatoes on a mousse of shrimp-flavoured salads made with ota which is a Fiji fern like the New Zealand pikopiko and fresh waloo and kokoda fish salads. Our favorite though was wrasse which is a deep-sea fish with fantastic flavour and texture fillet topped with crab meat resting on a sweet potato cake with island asparagus and a pawpaw and basil butter sauce presented in local pottery and palm wood. Fiji has bustling shopping strips boasting of a beautiful array of traditional handicrafts such as jewellery, war clubs, pottery, wood carvings, tribal masks, woven home wares like baskets and mats and tapa cloth. Fiji’s Indian influence is obvious in vivid displays of sarees and delicate jewellery while the tropical atmosphere ensures a lively selection of local sarongs and brightly colored shirts. And if you want to make your own kava once back home then the ingredients and the carved tanoa bowls are available throughout the countries shopping markets. Explore and Experience Each island of Fiji is unique and blessed by Mother Nature. South Sea Island is surrounded by crystal clear waters and coral reefs, where snorkeling or a ride beneath the waves in a semi-submersible vessel to see the tropical fish in the surrounding marine sanctuary can be enjoyed. Coral Coast located on the south western side of Viti Levu is a stretch of white sand fringed by tropical rainforest. The 60 k-m stretch of Queens Road is one of the most popular drives of the country while the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, a 650-hectare sand playground with dunes ranging from 20-60 metres in height, is great for sand boarding adventures. Fiji is renowned as ‘The Soft Coral Capital of the World’ and is also home to the ‘Great Astrolabe Reef’. We took the cave tour that started with a 35-minute drive into the picturesque Sigatoka Valley for viewing Fiji’s famous Salad Bowl. A customary kava

ceremony and picnic lunch was followed by a bamboo raft ferrying us across the river for the short walk to the Naihehe Caves. Natural features of these caves included sparkling stalactites, stalagmites, flow stones and underground springs. While the caves were clean and airy, their history of being the fortress to the last pagan tribes of Fiji was somewhat unnerving. Reminders in the form of the priest chamber and a ritual platform gave me goose bumps. In comparison, the Tivua Island day tour on board the ship ‘Ra Marama’ was pleasant. This historic Brigantine rig tall ship was built for the Governor General of Fiji in 1957. Tivua Island is surrounded by a circle of white sandy beach, popular with nesting turtles. For a more exclusive experience, the Castaway Island Day cruise on a luxury high speed catamaran is your chance to spend a day on the idyllic tropical island of Castaway. Only 15 passengers are allowed on the island per day. One can go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters or take a dip in the pool. At lunch a fabulous meal in the beach side restaurant can be relished. For an adreline rush, we decided to try mountain biking on stinger bicycles. These can be rented from the resort itself or arrangements can be made to have them transferred from the resort to the base starting point. The accessories provided include a helmet, water bottles, bike locks and what Fiji promises—lots of fun. And that is exactly what the bike ride delivered. Tradition says that when tourists leave a Fijian island by boat, they pluck a flower from their farewell lei and drop it in the sea. If the flower floats back to shore, you will return. As I was leaving, I wished with all my heart that the red hibiscus would happily head straight for the sandy beach I had just left. Sadly it didn’t but I had memories of Fiji that I would treasure and lots of “Bula” to keep me company for long.

She is also one of the most outstanding design geniuses in the country and the woman behind CASA PARADOX, the luxury interiors store. EDIDA identified and honoured her indigenous talent in the world interiors and applauded her for her latest collection called “Indophile” on an international stage. Owing her artistic values and passion for perfection to her parents she has made a prominent mark across the globe with her work. Meet RASEEL GUJRAL ANSAL as she talks about her personal living space and some tips for the season. 1. You come from a family soaked in talent and creativity, how easy or difficult was it to keep up to the name? My father is an artist and that is my heritage. I do not analyse or question it. I value it. My father during my childhood went from working on canvas to murals to metal sculpture, to architecture, and back to canvas, while my mother went from batik to ceramics to interior design. The whole house had an aura of creativity. They’ve been pretty big shoes to fill but I wanted to create my own identity and started my company Casa Paradox with my husband Navin Ansal. So here I am, designing dreams for my clients.

I remember landing in India with 24 kilos of personal belongings and nothing else, thinking to myself as the plane landed, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well this is it, I better make the best of everything that happens from here on.â&#x20AC;? Three and a half years, I am still loving it and now launching my own brand. India is an exciting place to be with everyone developing new markets and capturing the audience. I grew up being told Australia was ‘The lucky Country’ yet I come to India and feel that right now this is the lucky country. How big or small do you think is the ‘Luxury Client’ group in India? When I first arrived in India, I remember so many people telling me India is not ready for luxury and then I was told India won’t know the difference in quality. I stayed true to what I was sent here to do and never faltered in my goals. India is ready, the Indian market does know the difference between mediocre and luxury and can see quality. People want it and I think over time they will demand it. Have you seen it grow in terms of number of clients in the past few years? Three years ago when we arrived there was only several times every few months when I was flown outside Delhi for clients. Now it is a weekly affair. Does this mean the market is growing? No, I don’t think so. I think that the market is becoming aware and the brand is gaining momentum. So would you term yourself as a stylist for the elite? We aim at providing great service. It doesn’t matter if it is the industrialist in Chennai that wants his hair cut after dinner only on a Friday night or the actress in Mumbai who wants her style change done in her apartment as she is always harassed when she travels to the personal assistant who comes into the salon every eight weeks for a trim. We respect everyone the same. I always say—treat rich and powerful people like they are normal and treat normal people like they are rich and powerful, a good way to make people feel special I think. I love what I do and the people that are on this journey with

Client expectations, staff expectations are very different here. I really think that the fundamentals of what we do is the same in every part of the world. However, saying that to be successful and to have money and fame you have to put in years of hard work and dedication to build your skills. There is a saying “Rome was not built in one day.” It takes time to build the skills and knowledge and if you are persistent at it then eventually it pays off. I have made it to where I am through working consistently hard, putting in the best every day to every client and working for only five companies in my career, this has given me the best opportunities that life has to offer. You are on your way to establishing a brand new salon, tell us about it? The Rodanker brand is still in its infancy stage and whilst we are about to launch our flagship salon at The Claridges Surajkund, we are already operating out of the pre-existing space until we officially open in late Januaury/ early February 2012. The level of expertise that you have grown to expect in the surroundings which will leave you feeling as good as you look. We will not be open on every street corner or in every mall or complex throughout India. However we do have plans for growth but they will be done in time to ensure the brand and experience grows in line with each other. For me it is not about being everything for everyone, rather being providing a list of services that you can deliver in the most exceptional way. Would you be providing any special services that salons elsewhere do not provide?

Surely long term we will grow and possibly develop our brand back in Australia also but for now we are concentrating on India. Your personal favourite hair-care tip? The hair is the outfit you wear every day, does it match the rest of your wardrobe? If any of you have ever said, I need my hair long as it looks good when I wear a Sari, please think if you want to stand out and look amazing. Inspired by Sugar-craft artist Ron-Ben-Israel, Pavani Kaur, who has been baking since she was 11, started her own company, Firefly. Initially a candles and painting company, Firefly evolved into a design-oriented venture focusing on applied art and sugar-craft. Firefly gets massive orders every month for wedding cakes, which are almost always above 10 kg in weight and over four tiers high. The protocol is to get a clear idea of what the client wants in a cake and then adding a few creative elements. Pavani feels that the bakery industry in India is still lagging behind as compared to its International counterparts; however, the demand for fondant cakes for weddings is on an all time high, and will only get higher with time. “It will take a while before bakeries and their customers get out of their shells and embrace this drastic change in the cake and sugar craft industry.” Firefly has gained expertise in creating extremely delicate and realistic sugar flowers, and this is what people want on their wedding day. If given a chance to create something traditionally Indian, Pavani says she would go all out with gold embellishments and intricately piped details on cakes in shades of red and burgundy. Indian wedding cakes always require vibrant shades, where as a typical western cake in comparison is more quiet, elegant. One of Firefly’s most memorable creations was a five-tiered cake adorned with over 200 sugar flowers—which comes down to 1500 individually hand-crafted petals. It took 11 days to complete. Audi Delhi hosted a fashion presentation by acclaimed designer Vijay Arora at Audi Delhi Terminal. After the grand launch of Audi Delhi Terminal this year, Raghav Chandra, MD, Audi Delhi (Regent Garage Pvt. Ltd.) was delighted to present the designer’s journey from ‘Past to Present’. Vijay showcased his collection from Retrospective to Prospective along with recently launched Audi models Audi A7, Audi A8, Audi R8 and Audi RS5 on display. VIJAY ARORA, the label, is known for making timeless clothes. The designers behind the label, Vijay and Shobhna Arora have mastered the craft of Ek taar resham or single thread intricate hand embroideries, which are as painstaking as they are beautiful. So as not to take away from this beautiful tapestry, the silhouettes are kept clean and uncluttered. One of their most significant contributions to Indian fashion has been the woven Choga. After tremendous research, development, time and effort, the looms, which had got lost in the matrix of time, were set up in Benaras with the help of expert craftsmen. New pattern making techniques were used to execute placement weaving. Resurrecting the dead looms and recreating the apparel has been a very satisfying and fulfilling creative expression for the designers. The Artist

The Artist is a black and white, silent, romantic French film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dujardin and BĂŠrĂŠnice Bejo. The story takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising female actor, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. The film itself is a silent film. It has received wide praise from critics and many accolades. Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered, receiving a ten-minute standing ovation. The film has six Golden Globe nominations, the most of 2011. TLF loved it and if you are the one who absorbs the details of everything fine and gets nostalgic about the old world we left behind, you will love it too. .

The Help

The Help, a runaway hit, became a box office success with grossings of $201.9 million against its budget of $25 million. It is a 2011 comedy drama film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel of the same name. The film is an ensemble piece about a young white woman, Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, and her relationship with two black maids during Civil Rights era America in the early 1960s. Skeeter is a journalist who decides to write a controversial book from the point of view of the maids (known as the Help), exposing the racism they are faced with as they work for white families. Best Actor wins from the National Board of Review, the New York Film Critics Circle, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association prove The Help was as much as fan favorite as it is a critics’darling.

In this fanciful adventure, a lonely Parisian orphan (Asa Butterfield) who lives in a train station during the ‘30s makes friend with a precocious young girl (Chlöe Grace Moretz). Together, they uncover a life-changing secret about her godfather, a once famous film director. It is giving The Artist a serious competition in the run for the Best Movie at the Academy Awards. Reputed director Martin Scorsese has baffled the audience with his creative direction. This love letter to silent cinema is gorgeously photographed (in 3D, no less!) and deftly navigates a fine line between whimsical and haunting. Not surprisingly, it took home the National Board of Review’s Best Picture endorsement, in addition to Globe nods for Best Picture and Best Director.

The Descendants

Directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways), this family dramedy stars George Clooney as an absentee father who must raise his daughters (Amara Miller and Shailene Woodley, both in breakout roles) after his cheating wife (Patricia Hastie) suffers a coma-inducing accident. It is worth watching because George Clooney has out run his previous Academy Award winning performances. It’s this year’s The Kids Are All Right with emphasis on smart dialogue and nuanced performances; this indie has become a favourite with from critics. The movie has been nominated for many awards in Golden Globe and is definitely securing a space at the Oscars as well.

Extremely Loud Incredibly Close

Emotional fluency and literary pretense go hand in hand in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, an affecting, well acted tale of 9/11 trauma and a boy’s effort to piece things together after his father’s death. A self-conscious prestige project with weighty thematic elements, a tony literary pedigree and top-tier actors, director Stephen Daldry’s fourth film is dominated by the performance of a 13-year-old with no previous acting experience, Thomas Horn, who enables his character’s pinball intellect and inchoate emotions to pulse through every scene.

A 27-year-old (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his best friend (Seth Rogen) grapple with the former’s dating life in light of his cancer diagnosis. It is a comedy drama which has a way with making emotional moments not seemed contrived, but welcomed. This is actually the second cancer-movie Rogen has done (the other one being Funny People, costarring Adam Sandler). But unlike that more ham-fisted attempt at melancholic humor, 50/50 is truly a relaxed comedy with a heart and soul--based on the real-life travails of Rogen’s friend (and the film’s scripter) Will Reiser. After two surprise Golden Globe nominations--one of them for best comedy--this goofy musing on mortality is suddenly a viable Oscar movie .

Midnight in Paris

The plot is simple—magical occurrences in Paris prompt an American writer (Owen Wilson) to reconsider his relationship with his fiancée (Rachel McAdams). But the fact that it has been directed by Woody Allen, who is a regular in the run for Academy Awards, and has been directing drama like one never directed before makes it a must watch for seekers of romance. It’s a critical hit of 2011 that pulled in $143 million-making it Allen’s highest-grossing film ever. One Screen Actors Guild and four Golden Globe nominations could give the simple romantic film the push it needs-especially if it picks up a few wins.

A naive campaign manager (Ryan Gosling) for a presidential hopeful (George Clooney), navigates the seedy side of politics, while still trying to retain his ethics. It’s worth watching because of the superb performance by George Clooney and The Notebook stars Ryan Gosling. Clooney starred in, produced, directed, and co-wrote the screenplay for Ides (and got Golden Globe nominations for doing the latter three). The actors are eye candies so even if it is not in your taste it’ll be a visual treat.

What are some of your personal favourite recipes from Travelling Diva? It is very difficult to pick a favourite since I like all the recipes that are in there. I eat the eggplant salad all the time. The grilled halloumi is one of my favourite midnight snacks and I’m also very fond of the salad with pumpkin. Q5. Do you intend to launch another cookbook in the near future? I haven’t planned anything. I thought Italian Khana would be my last book, Travelling Diva just happened. I am a restaurateur first: TV shows and books follow later. However, I never say never. Q6.
