'the only good cage is an empty cage' will be proved right by paying a visit to the Glacier National Park, the Bob Marshall and Swan wilderness areas, which are brimming with wildlife in its natural niche. You cannot understand hospitality unless you have stayed at the historic hotels, classic inns and lodges in Montana. Here are a few properties, a stay at which will be cherished for years to come.

Charley Montana B& B, Glendive The Charley Montana B&B resides within the historic walls of the Krug Mansion, a stately 8000 sq. ft. home built in 1907 for millionaire stockman Charles Krug. This iconic property features ten-feet high ceilings with seven nine-feet high oak pocket doors, authentic wood carvings in oak and mahogany, a butler’s pantry and the antique bank vault door.

Grand Union Hotel, Fort Benton Built in 1882 - seven years before Montana became a state - the Grand Union is Montana’s

oldest operating hotel. Perched on the banks of the Missouri river along the storied path of Lewis and Clark’s exploratory travels, the hotel was built at the height of Fort Benton’s prosperity during the steamboat era.The hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Pollard, Red Lodge The Pollard, built in 1893, is reputed for having served Buffalo Bill Cody, Calamity Jane and Harry Longabaugh a.k.a The Sundance Kid. Guns have been banned in the hotel since the time Harry Longabaugh got arrested.

Fort Peck Hotel, Fort Peck This classic, wooden hotel, built in the 1930s, helped house Army Corps of Engineer employees working on the nearby Fort Peck Dam. During the New Deal years, 10,000 plus workers swarmed to the northeast corner of Montana to work on what is still the largest hydraulically filled dam in the USA. The Fort Peck Hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places.

(including Teddy Roosevelt – who came to hunt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Warren Harding) as well as celebrities and wealthy ranchers.

Izaak Walton Inn, Essex The Izaak Walton Inn, completed in November of 1939 for $40,000, was initially intended for the use of railroad service personnel. Additionally, it was built to serve as an entrance to Glacier National Park between the East and West Glacier. These plans were postponed due to WWII and never materialized after the war. All that remained was the “Inn Between,” a nickname that has endured. Since then, the Izaak Walton Inn – with its distinct Tudor-style exterior – has found its own niche, surrounded by a million acres of wildlife-rich wilderness. Lodging and dining are the elements that constitute a large part of a traveller’s experience. Don't forget to try out the fingerlicking-good dishes. To make the trip complete, dig your fingers into the yummy and delicious Huckleberry Pie. Book your tickets as this place as soon as possible because it's typical of the West, where all good things are wild and free.

Check-in

Goa Marriott Resort & Spa By Rupali Dean

Breathtaking sea views and glorious sunsets make Goa Marriott Resort & Spa the ideal destination for a stay in the land of Sun & Sand

Location At the edge of Miramar Beach overlooking the Arabian Sea and five minutes away from bustling Panaji, the capital city of Goa, rich in its history and cultural heritage, Goa Marriott Resort & Spa offers an exclusive sanctuary. As I stepped into the lobby, it revealed a world full of wonders within – a buzzing reception area with hip young people hopping about dynamically. The air of tranquillity set in, my check-in was done in a jiffy and I was led to my room.

Rooms & Suites One hundred and eighty keys open the doors to the luxury rooms and suites; I walked into my Bay View Suite and was greeted by a panoramic view of the picturesque waterfront. My room was spacious and filled with daylight. The interiors echoed my need to lay back and rest so that I could later resume my day in style and comfort. Adorned in warm creamy tones with plush, comfortable interiors, my room featured top class amenities. What I really loved the most was the iron, the ironing board and the writing desk. My bathroom was replete with a deep sunken bath, a double glass vanity basin, a private lavatory and a large walk-in wardrobe- all in all a haven of luxury!

Food & Beverage Each meal experience was top drawer and offered a great variety in both food and the dining experience. For most meals my popular haunt was AZ.U.R, a transition lounge where the ambience, food and service styles change as the day progresses from breakfast to dinner, though the fling with fun continues. The Waterfront Terrace & Bar is a 24x7 poolside restaurant offering an eclectic menu, whose indoors are meant for those who like to take it easy. For my afternoon tea I would sit at the Lobby Lounge, enjoying the sunset with my cuppa. Evenings were well spent at the Pool Bar, overlooking the infinity pool. The bartender was ever ready to whip up a cocktail or pour me a glass of whatever I fancied. The exhaustive bar menu and wine list didn’t let

me down.On the last night I had my meal at Wan Hao; the charm of this space is created by contemporising elements of the East that add a unique sense of individuality that shines through the private booths and the traditional oriental courtyard.

Simply Grills, which is open only for dinner during the season, is an absolute must try, and if that’s not enough, you can try your luck at the slot machines at the Casino Carnival. The bar and on-site casino offers wine, liquor and light snacks to help you fully enjoy your time.

She has studied domestic design from University of Arts, London and specialized in Chair designing from the Danish Skole of Design, Copenhagen. Aarti’s strong design sensibility articulates her international exposure and innate love for Indian art and culture. She explains, “My journey started with a deep desire of expression- of myself, of the craft and the inherent nature of the elements I wanted to work with. My first project was to manifest a close understanding of the Coronation Chair from the Ming Dynasty.I found myself in the company of two enthusiastic carpenters working out the modest garage in my parent’s

home. Two thousand dollars got us the necessary hand tools. One surface planer saw the manifestation of our interpretation of The Ming Dynasty’s Coronation Chair. I daresay I had found and lived my dream.” She adds, “The story started with chairs, soon my clients wanted accompaniments; and I was designing tables, beds, consoles and more. Clients value good designs and quality. They look for reliability and commitment. The biggest accomplishment for any designer is the trust that their clients place in them”. The brand’s latest collection titled ‘Utsav’, inspired by Vatsyayana’s Kamasutra, is pure sensuality with a touch of opulence. It includes a King size bed, complimented with a love seat, a lotus table and a mirror, bed side tables, chairs and console celebrating harmony and contrasts that defines the characteristics of both men and women through the infusion of elaborate yet complex materials, colours and textures in every single design piece. The collection is a blend of ‘classic meets contemporary’ based on the belief that the passage of time has had little impact on the sanctity of love and the connection between two people. The intricacy of the designs and bold contours marry well together to give a complete picture. In Aarti’s words, “Drawing inspiration from the ancient text, my collection showcases the merging of two distinct personalities. Two opposing characteristics blend to give a holistic picture and at the same time retain their individuality”. She ends by saying, “My designs are contemporary yet inspired by the royalty and magnificence that take us back to the bygone era. While the classic elements in the individually handcrafted furniture pieces are inspired by ancient Indian forms, the usage of rich fabrics and modern materials gives it a very timeless feel”.

What’s on offer?

The menu is extremely creative and well balance between vegetarian and non vegetarian. It is a refreshing treat for all those who crave good food with a difference. The faux yogurt sphere served as an amuse bouche (a small appetite tickler) was one of my favourites; delicate and wobbly, it popped like a balloon in my mouth to reveal a juicy Matha like centre – intense and tasty papdi c h a a t . bouche, wild rice sev puri on the go is I think the most highly Instagramed dish in India. It’s served in a pretty rickshaw and happily it tastes absolutely delicious too. The wild mushroom chai and deconstructed pav bhaji stokes your appetite for more. I guess it’s all about applying science to cooking in order to enhance the dining experience. The mains rarely disappointed either. The crowning glory was the Laal Maas; the flesh was cooked sous-vide style, and fairly melted in waves on the tongue. The khasta kachori grits with the special mathani mirch just enhanced the taste. I’d suggest you share your desserts as they're all gratifying, running the gamut from jalebi caviar served with rabri (I’d say the tastiest molecules ever) or the liquid nitrogen chilled chocolate. However, my vote goes all and all out for the Ghevar Cheese Cake! It is meltin-your-mouth tender and decadent to the core. The molecular inspired cocktails like the curry patta and star anise martinis are a must try. All in all, the food is excellent and everything is executed with panache. All this with service that is so warm and attentive that it can be described as nothing short of remarkable.

Bonne Bouche: a slice of Italy! By Indrani Thakurata

Pastas, pizzas and heavenly tiramisu- Bonne Bouche is much more than that. It isn’t difficult to locate Bonne Bouche. In the middle of the bustling Defence Colony market, Bonne Bouche sits pretty just next to Barista. As you approach the restaurant, a man greets you with a broad smile, instantly putting you at ease, increasing your appetite for food and hospitality. The decor is peaceful in white and blue, giving it a comfortable homestyle Italian restaurant feel. The comfortable wooden chairs were apparently contoured and re-contoured endlessly till they looked effortlessly casual. The pretty cane basket with dried flowers hangs on the walls at erratic angles, adds to the decor.

club sandwich, bacon guacamole grilled cheese sandwich etc. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They were able to answer my food related queries and helped me choose the best dish for me, listening to my preferences and then making reccomendations. If you drool for Italian food, check this out.

I started my meal with a smoked chicken with mixed greens in mustard and mayo dressing salad.

There are two floors above the restaurant, one of which is a pub and the other the terrace, which is ideal for a lazy evening with hookah and friends. Bonne Bouche serves a major portion of their menu straight from the Italian wood fired oven. I started my meal with a smoked chicken with mixed greens in mustard and mayo dressing salad. It was delicious, succulent, and left me wanting more. For my main course, I tried grilled lamb chops with BBQ sauce and chicken breast with morel mushroom sauce. The portion was satisfying and for a change, I liked the BBQ sauce. After relishing the main course, it was time for some dessert. I must confess: the Tiramisu served at Bonne Bouche was one of the best I have ever had in Delhi. It is hard to get authentic Italian in Delhi, but Bonne Bouche is as close as it gets. The menu truly embodies the global spirit that is authentic Italian and French in nature. Among Starters you can choose from the tomato bruschetta, Bonne Bouche mezze platter, vegetable quiche, foie gras, morel mushroom croutons etc. Panini / Foccacia and multi grain sandwiches are a must to try, because that gives you the option of choosing from toasted capreses grilled sandwiches, corn and spinach grilled cheese sandwich, the Bonne Bouche

A view from the mountain top

As you lie on the sun deck, the face of Mt. Kanchenjunga stands tall in front of you, its face covered with a snowy veil. Whether you’re in a suite with a traditional Sikkimese theme or in one with the British Raj theme, you’ll wake up to views of the peak. At mealtime, spoil yourself with Sikkimese cuisine and savour a range of international and fine wines to go with it. But what got us curious were the Menlha (The Medicinal Buddha) spa and Dottho bath house where Buddhist meditation is practiced. There’s also an amphitheatre on the premise and a small theatre where the filmmaker owner of the resort, Ugyen Chopel, houses his private film collection. Adding fun to cold evenings is the bonfire pit, and then head to Basecamp (the 24-hour coffee joint) with a rustic, mountaineering basecamp feel, for a cuppa of hot tea and call it a day. Relive the glory hidden in your soul by visiting the palace resorts reflecting true opulence and regality.

T

he word Maharaja conjures up the image of a turbaned, bejewelled ruler, fabulously wealthy and powerful. The past was a period of timeless elegance. It was a royal romance of jewels and opulence; luxury and style made-to-order for the Maharajas! Be it a 1000-year old carpet, ancient Rajasthani miniature paintings or crystal chandeliers- the past was a period of immense style. The walls were ornate and used as a canvas for artistic flair. Jewellery had intricate designs. It was a period of highs for ornamental style- from the bazubands (armlets) to sarpech (turban ornaments). The potraits of Indian royalty reflect grandeur, power and their wealth. When being photographed, Indian Maharajas wanted to showcase their style and strength.

Food on the other hand was an art. The kitchens of royal India were nothing but lavish. Global cuisines were often experimented with local herbs. Beneath the crystal chandelier on the dining table, there would be a spread of unusual dishes! There was a great competition between chefs, who tried to surprise the royalts by serving stuffed wild boar! Chefs liked to stun their guests and were often sent abroad for culinary training. Tiaras in turbans, diamond-studded brocaded coats, gold tongue-scrapers, platinum brooches, authentic dishes, architectural masterpieces: Indian royalty's rich legacy inspires lovers of luxury even today. It is said that in the past people were born royal and nowadays royalty comes from what you do. So get in the mood of visiting the best palace resorts of the country to experience royal luxury.

Luxury Gone Wrong By Shrutika Nagpal

Inside story of brands going off the track

L

uxury lives through brands that we spend time, money and adoration on. Many of us aspire to be patrons of stores that epitomise the best of living and crave an inside look into the workings of these multi-billion dollar entities. It’s therefore quite a change to see these brands humanised by the revelation of a couple of mistakes they make. The following is a compilation of some of the silly mistakes, epic blunders and completely unintentional disasters that rock the luxury industry from time to timesometimes because someone atop the social ladder did something wrong, and sometimes because everyone else did. Here are a few instances of luxury gone wrong:

Misunderstanding consumers

Firstly, despite the smaller purchaser pool for most luxury brands, not all customers are the same. Just as other brands segment their customers and use customised tools to appeal to different tastes, luxury businesses need to do the same. For example, the individual who buys a 2 Crore Rupee car behaves differently to the one who buys a 1 Crore Rupee car, and both are different to the one who buys a 40 Lakh car. The first two vehicles will still probably sell well in tough economic times, but aspirational purchasers who might have gone for the entry-level supercar may in fact be struggling. So do not be generic: understand that different segments exist, even amongst luxury buyers.

they want to be treated not only as individuals but as VIPs.They want to be remembered not by their purchases, but by their interests.

Highest form of flattery

For some of the biggest names in Luxury branding, the biggest problem they face in countries like India and China is the abundance of counterfeit products. Travelling

Do not be generic: understand that different segments exist, even amongst luxury buyers

Secondly, as a rule, luxury customers are willing to give their personal details as long as they can see value to them as individuals with properly targeted offers and events, knowing that it is secure, and assuming that it will be shared all sections of the brand so that the sales, communications and aftersales teams will not all be pestering them for data separately. Issues arise when brands do not understand what they are trying to do with data, collect the wrong data or fail to integrate it within the organization. No other segment has such high levels of expectation:

on the Metro or going to any traditionally overcrowded market in the big cities of Delhi, you will find yourself swarmed by Louis Vuitton bags, Aviator shades, Burberry jackets and Prada shoes- or at least that is what it will look like. The market for counterfeit brands in India has been growing steadily over the years. People who aspire to belong to the exclusive community that these brands make you a part of sometimes resort to the purchase of fakes, simply because they don’t have the money to pay for the real thing. The highest form of flattery may be imitation, but for the owners of these multi billion dollar brands, it’s a pain. Big brands often claim that they lose millions in sales because people buy cheap impostors instead of their real products, not realising that when an individual owns a fake for a long enough time and develops a fondness for it, the individual might actually start to get frustrated of the stitches falling apart and begin saving up to buy the real thing!

A still from Titanic

Future marketing predictions aside, this ever growing market of knock off products is ever expanding and is now becoming a habit for a lot of us. The other group of people who are customers to these cheats are those who never intended to buy a copy. For them, it’s the rude shock upon discovering a missing label or a torn inside pouch that is the real wrong, but a wrong nonetheless.

After sales joy, if any

Too many luxury brands still focus on sales – and not on what comes next. In fact, the postsales relationship is one of the most critical elements of luxury customer relationship management: if someone has just spent 80 lakh on a car, or 25 lakh on a watch, they will not be impressed by a template letter saying “thank you for buying it.” When a customer is paying that much money to your brand for a product, the least you can do is package the gift nicely, maybe throw in some complimentary goodbye gifts (ever heard of mint-scented clothes?) or even someone to check in on them a week after their purchase to see if everything is good back at their castle. Brands must ensure that customers know that, for example, their marvelous new watch will need servicing in 12 months, and then keep them in the loop during the maintenance process so they know you care about their experience. Plus, any complaints need to be handled swiftly and effectively – because if left to fester, the emotional attachment between customer and product can turn to bitterness and that can undo your patron’s intentions to revisit your store.

Nouveau riche

We all remember the lovable yet slightly obnoxious Molly Brown from Titanic- the

woman who was condescended upon by the other high fashion ladies for being too “un lady like”. They referred to her as being one of those “New Money” types, who hadn’t yet learned how to live like the rich The Nouveau Riche refers to the people who have come into money at a late stage in their life and have thus not acquired the ways and words of those at the top of the social ladder. It is a term that is often used colloquially for people who buy expensive things and have opulent houses but don’t know when to stop with the richness. Their clothes will be too garish, their accessories too flashy, their shoes too over-the-top and their houses far too crammed with –albeit- costly treasures. These are the people who are toeing the line between 'having a luxury product and owning it'. They don’t carry it off well enough and sometimes end up looking like they’re trying too hard. Today we meet people who wear any kind of luxury symbol without "looking" luxury. They only look rich. Luxury involves exclusiveness, almost uniqueness, not because it is addressed to a few people, because it's special.

The dire misuse of social media The main issue here for luxury brands is the openness, accessibility and lack of control they have with social media. However, approached in the right spirit, it can work brilliantly for them. After all, many affluent individuals have at least one social networking profile, usually Facebook, and

Today we meet people who wear any kind of luxury symbol without "looking" luxury TLF Magazine December, 2013

there are other networks such as aSmallWorld solely devoted to high net worth individuals. Luxury brands derive huge value from the story behind the product, the materials, the production, the design – all of which can be communicated through social media. The conversations are going on regardless, so it is essential that brands are involved and provide a channel for this communication. That said, however, there are a number of brands who don’t get it right even when they try. A visit to the websites of the following brands would leave you a little befuddled as to what just happened. Givenchy might make more than EU 81m in annual revenue if it allowed users to navigate around its website without the need for night vision cameras. Black text against a dark grey background isn't cool or classy, just illegible. Then is the slow madness of Dom Perignon. I could have opened a bottle of sparkling wine before this website sprang into life. When it did I couldn’t make sense of it. Up, down, left, right… eyes everywhere. It makes the Facebook Timeline seem ever so linear. Bentley kind of surprised me too but left me giggling so it wasn’t that bad. On your first visit to its website, Bentley shows you a great big ad of some kind or other, and then leaves you staring at some wild flowers. You must search for the ‘skip to home’ button, located in the bottom corner, to proceed to its homepage. Found the cars!

ndia’s relationship with luxury can be dated back to the era of customised Rolls Royce coaches for hunting trips for Nizams who used fist-sized diamonds as paperweights. These days it may be more about prospective yacht buyers, helicopters and private jets but India’s spenders have not lost their royal roots. With the most high class brands reaching out to customers all over India, it is not a surprise that they are responding with renewed enthusiasm. We list below five of the biggest brands in India, who stand out not because they have the most sales or the most fan following, but because they have a product that appeals to the hearts and minds of Indian consumers- making them fall in love with the brand because of the thought behind their most desired product. These are India’s favourite luxury brands and what we love most about them:

1 Louis Vuitton When the rich travel, they want everything to be à la mode- even their luggage. From dainty handbags to sturdy suitcases, flashing the LV logo is a must. The bags are styled with different materials, sequins, suede, florals and denim. The most popular product amongst Indian luxury buyers are the mid-sized handbags. They are the perfect blend of style and utility for those who work at top positions in large organisations, are Page 3 mothers with an agenda or rich youths whose fingers itch to buy all the pretty things they see. It allows them the glitz and glamour of carrying an LV bag without compromising on the need to carry the essentials. Louis Vuitton has unexpected designs that combine its signature emblematic monogram canvas, natural cowhide leather and coloured calf leather. Louis Vuitton enriches this Monogram collection of contemporary handbags with the Pallas, which is very well suited to the needs of the Indian luxury buyer. This versatile everyday bag

After it emerged from the trenches, indelibly linked to adventure and romance, it began attracting a new wearer: the author, the statesman, the private eye. It's the coat that Dustin Hoffman brought to celebrate a promotion in "Kramer vs. Kramer".

3 Versace The world of the Italian designer Gianni Versace is reflected in the brand logo: the Medusa-head symbol that is ornamented in a typically Greek fashion. The choice was made deliberately. Medusa does not only epitomise beauty, Greek art and philosophy, but also has a fatal fascination attributed to her. Her beauty was spellbinding as it was, sending shockwaves in the hearts of those who laid eyes upon her. There are two collections of Versace jewellery that are namesakes of the brand's iconic symbol, consisting of rings, chains and earrings- the Medusa and the Medusa Baguette. All hail the Medusa collection, that storms in with its perfection to present to us with Championship styled rings with varying versions of Medusa carved into the table-setting. The hoops are no plebeians either- there are smoothed curves and intricately carved out shapes to choose from. The necklaces, available in white and yellow gold cable chains, build suspense for the pendant. In the picture we see the face of Medusa carved out in yellow gold, surrounded by studded diamonds. The most popular ring is a white gold 18 karat ring that is contrasted with a black onyx base and Baguette cut diamonds. The second collection is called the Medusa Baguette. It focuses on white silver and diamond studded jewellery. The ring we see is a white gold 18 karat. It is a delicate addition to any outfit. The most striking item of this collection features a white gold face of Medusa placed in the heart of a blue sapphire ring that burns jealousy into the eyes of the beholder. is inspired by Greek mythology, more specifically the Goddess of wisdom, arts and craft: Pallas Athena. Aside from its feminine design and rich functionalities, Pallas offers a strong signature in colorful supple calf leather revealing secured compartments. Its distinctive shape, generous size and subtle folds make it a functional and chic bag, great for a day in the city or for business. Pallas features natural cowhide Toron leather handles and an adjustable and removable Monogram canvas shoulder strap. The bag has a double zip and two magnetic closures with a discreetly embossed Louis Vuitton Paris signature on the calf leather. Shiny brass metallic hardware, microfiber lining, and two interior pockets finish the whole look. Pallas comes in four colors- Aurore, Quetsche, Havane and Safron.

2 Burberry The Burberry Trench Coat is irreplaceable. Come winters and everyone pulls out this iconic piece of clothing that announces the arrival of the season. The Burberry trench coat is arguably the most famous luxury product in the entire Asia Pacific region. This refined item of luxury is crafted in protective cotton gabardine. Set-in sleeves and a belted waist give a structured feminine silhouette. As an ode to the original Burberry Trench Coat, heritage features include a gun

While the Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane combines these two guarantors of absolute precision, it adds a third enhancement, this time based on the suppression of isochronism. Its fusée-chain transmission system guarantees constant force, resulting in rigorously stable amplitude throughout the running period.
