These demonstrations have been held since then to warn people of the dangers of fire.

September greetings

from Sicily and Orlando By Natascha Shah

Old world charm juxtaposed with gamma exuberance, take a visit to these magical cities Sicily

September

Palazzo-dei-normanni

A city that oozes with Italy's dynamic history and deep rooted culture in its tiny flea markets, selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, fish and other sea food to home baked sweet treats, Italian breads and cheese and even umbrellas and under garments. Be it a traditional barber who doesn't fail to amaze with his technique (it really is an art!) or a good old place where you can get knives and blades sharpened, tiny eateries serving pipping hot pizzas— all run by families, sitting together—almost taking up all the space! The Italian warmth and family love abound in Palermo. Thanks to the place’s history of being passed from the Phoenicians, to the Carthaginians, to the Greeks, Romans, Saracen Arabs, Normans, Swabians, French and the Spanish, the city is full of architectural delights, varying in design—from museums, Arabian domes and flourishes of baroque splendour to the marvels of Arab-Norman architecture like the 12th-century Palazzo dei Normanni and San Giovanni degli Eremiti. Vucciria, Capo and Ballaro markets are one of the many street markets in Palermo, the latter two are where one can get a taste of city’s gastronomic brilliance. Try the Setteveli or the seven layer cake and a Frittola or a sandwich made with meat. There are many other meat specialities one must try, including Stigghiola or calf intestines. The pastas and gelatos are also a must try! September is a great time to visit and a smart thing is to avoid the snooty high end stays and go for a home stay or a B&B! Also try going for a day trip to Savoca, the hamlet where scenes from the Godfather were shot.

Situated on the North Coast of Sicily, Palermo enjoys a warm Mediterranean Climate, although the winters are a bit wet.

August

the Land of Lama By Swati Sharma

We travel in search of paradise, and if we are lucky some places help us find it inside us. The land of lamas, prayer beads, centuries old artworks and surreal beauty is much more than just being the road to heaven itself

I

t is no surprise that Leh/Ladakh is one of the most sought after destinations for travellers all around the world. So was it for me, and after years of procrastination I finally made it to the mystic land in September, 2013, and return after two months of reverie. Yes! I went ahead the old school way, I had seen pictures of the place, knew a couple of “touristy places and that was all that my knowledge was limited too. It was a conscious decision to not go through the loads of web pages and travel sites to know what I could and should do and eat. I was waiting for the paradise to slowly reveal itself to me, speak to me in its own sweet language. It started up in the air, when I saw the Karakoram and the Himalayan Range form the most amazing landscape I had ever seen. The Indus in all its glory, I had forgotten that rivers could be so stark green. My eyes were wide open, almost jumping out of the sockets and the best part was; it was just the beginning!

Breathing it all in

The first day was spent mostly sleeping and acclimatizing to the high altitude followed by two days just walking through the streets in utter astonishment of the place I was in. Could any place get more majestic than this? I had, most of my life loved the green mountains and till date could not get enough of them, but seeing the cold desert, the dry brown mountains with luminous hues of purple and green, the bluest sky and the most friendly salutation of Juley, which by the way comes in very handy for it means, hello, bye, thank you and welcome . I was more than overwhelmed. In the rut of fast moving city life we forget how nature never ceases to amaze and inspire us. I was just breathing it all in. No internet, no electricity, no phones People gathered for the religious Chamm dance

made it even better; I could even hear the voices in my head again. Then began my other journey; starting from a walk through the old city of Leh. An uphill climb to Leh Palace, a structure built by King Sengge in the 17th Century.A nine storey high structure made up of mud and wood, with an overview of Stok Kangri peak and Zangskar range and the whole town of Leh. A very interesting structure which has been restored by ASI (Archeological Survey of India), the museum too has a range of jewellery, utensils and thanka paintings almost 500 years old. A walk to Shanti Stupa was as the name describes a very peaceful one, the sunrise and the sunset are to die for which I devoured time and again. Any trip to Leh/ Ladakh is incomplete without the visit to the beautiful monasteries that envelope the state and if you have a keen interest in Buddhist philosophy, you will have your spiritual side awakened to a whole new meaning. Another place close by is the riverside village of Spituk, which has a very fascinating landscape, sitting next to the bluish green river can make you forget the notions of time and space, it is surrounded by dandelions and sea buckthorn which add to its charm.

Economical Delights

If you are a budget traveller like me you could have a lavish yet economical meal

at the multi cuisine Penguin Garden Café which offers free and healthy desert that can fall on your head (the place is adorned by ripe apricot trees). The café had become my favorite in no time. And if you want to try the authentic Tibetan and Kashmiri food then Summer Harvest is the place. Other places for a feisty meal were Gizmo and Jeevan

The Ladakh Festival is a seven day crash course in the lives of people and culture of Ladakh. Café on Changspa Road. But you have to try the authentic Ladakhi cusine and that can only be had with a Ladakhi family. I was lucky to be staying with one and devoured myself with the Ladakhi bread, skew (stew of potatoes, carrot and flour balls), mutton with phing(transparent rice noodles) , crispy bitter gourd and smelly but yum yak cheese. Ladakhi food is very simple and some may find it a little bland but that I think is the

beauty of it since most flavors come out rejoicing. The highlight for me was the old “chulha” used for cooking, studded with gems and by far the most practical thing to be used in cooking. Almost all families have a kitchen garden and cooking is done with fresh ingredients.

Making the most of Buddhist Architecture and Culture

In the days to come I visited the Thicksey Monastery, Shey Palace, Hemis Monastery, Lamayuru Monastery and Alchi Monastery. You may feel that each monastery is the same in terms of structure or art work and sculptures but each one is unique and you will take back something intangible with you. It is a wonder how these centuries old structures are standing tall, braving the historical invasions and natural calamities. While you gaze the brown mountains ,if you carefully examine you can see small little room, perfectly camouflaging the mountain.Monks are believed to have spent years meditating there, living only on the energy of the universe. While I was there, "The Ladakh Festival" was on, which was a seven day crash course in the lives of people and culture of Ladakh. The festival included almost all folk dance forms, live music played on trumpets, drums and shehnai and the famous Chamm Dance (Mask Dance) that is considered a religious

dance that only the lamas perform. I also had the opportunity to see some of the rare Thanka paintings as old as 12th century in an exhibition. If you are thinking there was no action- oh there was- the polo match. Men were clad in brocade tops and cotton breeches and every time there was a goal the drums would reverberate across the place. In the evenings everyday there was musical show with the palace lights embellishing the experience. The sounds of the drums will remain in your head for days together.

Itch for Adventure

Not only is Ladakh a place for spiritual learning but a place where you might learn almost all lessons to “how to pump the adrenaline rush”. In a months time (in which I went to see Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pehalgam et al) some of my friends had joined me and so then we all headed to the highest motorable pass in the world Khardung La at an elevation of 5,602 m (18,379 ft) high. Our agenda: cycle down to the town of Leh (40 km). You can get cycles on rent form Leh and a car to keep a tab. By far a must do, an exhilarating downhill, almost feeling that the snow covered mountains and you could sing a song together, in arms. Other adventures included a ride in a sports gypsy to Tso Pangong lake, sitting at the back with the wind whipping out the skin and the road shaking each part of the body. Totally worth it! The road trip back from Leh to Manali has been by far the most exhilirating, picturesque and mind blowing(literally) for me. We were a part of the Raid de Himalaya convoy making its way back after the race. Everyone must see this road and evrything it has to offer and trigger in you a special feeling of speechlessness.

Ladakhi Nuptials

Did I mention one of the reasons why I was in Ladakh for 2 months? Well, two of my close friends who happen to be Ladakhi were getting married and we were all very excited to see the wedding. Ladakhi weddings are very simple; our Punjabis would be embarrassed to see the simplicity of the special event and how much importance is given to community closeness rather than in which luxury car the groom comes in. However, it was a first of its kind wedding for me. Ladakh has a culture of ghar jamai. If there is just one daughter, instead of going to the boy’s family, the boy can come and stay with her family. Now that’s progressive I think. And so it happened that the girl’s families were the ones who went to boy’s and got him. Everyone was dressed in the ethnic dress called “kos”, while the drink served is chang ,a beer made up of barley. Food is a five course menu with a mix of vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes. You have to attend a Ladakhi wedding to see the difference.

Shopping

Most of the shopping can be done in Leh town. There are some authentic Tibetan artifacts markets, and if you have an eye for old mysterious one, Leh has a lot to offer. Yak wool shawls and Pashmina are also

TLF Magazine January, 2014

great but be sure you learn something about them before buying. Leh is also home to the finest organic jams, oils, soaps other wellness products, definitely a must. Gem stones, jewellery are also in large variety and so is the adventure gear that you can shop. Yes, it has something for everyone.

We munched on some Satay and Lebanese Mezze along with our cocktails and took in the sea-view, trust me it was awe-inspiring. In the evening I would walk in my local sarong along to the beach front restaurant ‘ Le Bourgeois’ for spectacular views and a mouth-watering taste sensation of arguably the finest food you can find in the Seychelles.

The resort offers an abundance of facilities to keep every member of the family occupied. To catch a glimpse of what lives under the sea, don a Snorkel and flippers and head out as the water is remarkably clear and the underwater flora and fauna before your masks turns into a kaleidoscope of brilliantly stunning colours. You can swim over hardly touched healthy young corals, discover big marbled groupers lurking in the shadows and even encounter turtles. Craving more thrills, go Scuba diving, a practically religious experience for divers. Le Meridien has its own fully-equipped PADI diving school staffed by professional instructors. A variety of other water sports is on offer, such as canoeing and sailing, and a large freshwater swimming pool. Beyond the island you could also go in for deep-sea fishing and excursions in close proximity of the Hotel. And yes the spa here creates the ideal setting for ‘balancing senses’ as out here it is indeed a work of art that is a total mind and body encounter. All in all it’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a holiday and wander the beach.

Maritime by San Lorenzo By Rupali Dean

Italian flavours travel to India with the opening of Maritime by San Lorenzo at Taj Lands’ End in Mumbai. This new premium Italian restaurant is designed to offer the most genuine Italian dining experience outside of an Italian home! Lowdown

For those who do not know San Lorenzo, it is an iconic Knightsbridge restaurant in West London, owned by Lorenzo Berni, which serves hearty Italian specialties, drawing inspiration from Lorenzo Berni’s family recipes. Alessandro Bechini and Marco Foroni, two San Lorenzo trained Italian chefs now spearhead Maritime at Taj Lands’ End in Mumbai while playing a pivotal role in ensuring the authenticity of the dishes. As the doors of this Italian Adventure open, one is overwhelmed with the majestic feel of vibrant colours and exotic fragrance of Italian home style food. What’s on offer?

The vibe is homey, comfort Italian chow like San Lorenzo’s signature dishes, from Risotto with prawns and courgettes to Tagliata of chicken breast with balsamic sauce

The wine list on offer is diverse and features 64 Italian wine labels. For those seeking a tasty tipple, the Prosecco Bar offers a variety of cocktails, from Kir Royals to fruity Bellini’s. Coming to the food, the meal at Maritime is a leisurely sequence of events, served in five courses – Antipasti, Primi, Secondi, Contorni and Dolce, to provide its patrons with the experience of an old world meal, in a beautiful space. The vibe is homey, comfort Italian chow like San Lorenzo’s signature dishes, from Risotto with prawns and courgettes to Tagliata of chicken breast with balsamic sauce. Consistent with Indian culinary habits, the menu features plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. The integrity of the ingredients, many of which come directly from Italy, follows through to desserts, with the famous homemade ice creams. In keeping with the spirit of Italian cooking, everything is fresh and the flavours are kept simple so they balance each other. Sometimes, simplicity can be the hardest thing. Chef Marco and Chef Alessandro take on an emotional approach to cooking. They almost take it as a responsibility and enjoy watching people eat. Italian food has been adulterated, and generally syncretised to a significant degree. It is therefore gratifying to dine on good, authentic Italian fare out here.

Great Eggspectations By Indrani Thakurata

The name itself raises expectations. Not only is it suggestive of the restaurant being different, but also with a fun twist. A franchise of the Canadian chain that has already made a mark in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto in Canada and South Portland and Ellicott City in the US, Eggspectation spreads out a creative international menu with an eclectic selection of fine fare, which includes many styles of Eggs alone, making the restaurant a one-ofits-kind. To keep the excitement going for the foodies, Eggspectation, the 24 hour resto café at Jaypee Group of Hotels, has re-worked on its menu, making it irresistible in terms of choices and taste. The delightful new menu with its expansive choice of savory appetizers, salads, beverages, desserts, will take you by surprise. “We offer world cuisine here, there’s everything in the menu, from Italian, American to Indian," says Chef S.Shyam. While going through the menu, I realized the work that has gone in even naming the dishes.eg; Uneggspected, Eggstravaganza, Eggsuberant, is praise worthy. With names like that, who will be able to resist them? Surely, not me! After settling in, I was quick to surrender myself to the chef, who decided the dishes on my behalf. I started with Perfectly Pink, a smoothie made up of Raspberry, strawberry and yoghurt, with a splash of cranberry juice and honey. It was a perfect beginning. While sipping the smoothie, I was savouring Salmon Crostini served with capers, red onions and cucumbers with cream cheese spread on toasted ciabatta slices. I have always been weary of smoked Salmon, but this preparation left me wanting for more. Before I could even finish eating Salmon Crostini, my table was full with South Western Sunrise and Mykonos Omelette, egg specials, that are a must try. Western Sunrise is an omelette filled with

The delightful new menu with its expansive choice of savory appetizers, salads, desserts, will surprise you cheddar, swiss and gruvere cheeses, sautéed peppers topped with strips of sliced avocado served with lyonnaise-style potatoes. You can just have this for a meal, which is filling, tasty and complete with fruits. Another version of

The Bad Boy Tenderloin Burger

the omelette, Mykonos Omelette, brings in the Mediterranean with cherry tomatoes, Feta cheese, diced red onions, oregano and black olives served with Lyonnaise-style potatoes, a must try. Apart from the above mentioned, I couldn’t resist the Tuscani burger, which I relished. Since most of the dishes were served with fruits, I gave desserts a miss. Food coupled with the serene ambience makes it a perfect eatery destination for a family dinner, lunch or a midnight snack. The range in the menu card definitely serves as its USP, a delightful 160 items and classic yet innovative range of beverages. The beverage bar offers a wide assortment of Italian coffees, including liqueur coffees and a range of smoothies. The new menu card in Eggspectations will give you a gastronomic rush that you will thoroughly enjoy the transformation of simple egg into something exotic or egsotic?

Taking your guests out to dinner and chatting with them over a few drinks is how the corporate head honchos do it. Picking out a fitting restaurant is often half the deal right, as it sets a perfect atmosphere, by not being too casual, while retaining a formal feel to it. But in a city as large and diverse as Mumbai, where there are new restaurants popping up and shutting down every week, it’s tough to keep a track of the good ones, not only in terms of the ambience, but also excellent food. Making your job a lot easier, we list a few such restaurants and bars which are perfect places to take a guest out to, with a fine balance of formal and friendly. December

By Indrani Thakurata

My long drawn plan finally came true. I wouldn’t say I have got the taste of Bangladesh, but a visit to Khulna has definitely opened a new perspective. This was one of the best holidays I have taken, and there are more reasons than one for it. My great grandfather would often shed tears while talking about his country where he spent his childhood, the bylanes, the paddy fields, his school and the local temple. In between the narration, he would get angry and sad at the same time; they had to leave everything behind and make home from scratch again. Undoubtedly, Bangladesh wasn’t completely alien when I visited it this time. I already had an image of Bangladesh in my mind. And needless to say, my visit aroused a lot of interest among my Bengali friends. Bengalis have a strange connection with this country. A country that has upheld a language and a culture that is so rich in art, literature and music. But I must admit, this wasn’t the best time to visit Bangladesh. Newspapers,

Indramohan sweet shop

radio and the television, every medium of communication was against any visit to Bangladesh, which is facing a political turmoil currently. Buses are being burnt, people are being killed, and stones are being pelted at any running public transport.

City, it is one of the important industrial and commercial areas of the country. And to simplify it further, Khulna is the gateway of Sundarban (home of Royal Bengal Tiger). Anybody who travels down to Khulna will not like to miss Sundarbans.

Many killed, far many casualties. But, nothing really deterred us from going to our neighbouring country. Afterall, it was my brother's wedding at Khulna. For Kolkattans, Khulna is the closest in terms of proximity. It is located in the southernwest area of Bangladesh and situated on the banks of the Rupsha and Bhairab River.

But we did! Only for our dear lives! “With an Indian passport, why are you travelling to Bangladesh at this time? After crossing the border, how will you reach the main city of Khulna?” exclaims the Border Security officer. I must admit, I was scared, and my husband, more scared. But brave-hearts don’t show signs of weakness. So, we acknowledged their concerns, and headed to the border--just a plain strip of road dividing the two countries, nothing dramatic that I had imagined, yet again.

Contrary to my knowledge, Khulna is the 3rd largest city in Bangladesh after Dhaka and Chittagong. Often referred to as an Industrial

But we let it pass, who will bother about money when your dear life is on the line? After reaching Bangladesh, we were in safe hands of a family friend who helped us in finding a taxi which took us to Khulna. We were lucky to find one, and reach safe. Khulna is like Kolkata, the streets, the street vendors and the hotels.

divide people and their hearts? They still thrive on bangle serials airing from Kolkata and Bollywood. As the driver who steered us through trouble admits “ We love Indian stars, cricketers and everything Indian. Just because you reside in a different land now doesn’t make you and i different. We have the same past.” I couldn’t have agreed more.

The wedding didn’t allow us to gorge on street food, but a special mention of the lemon tea is the least that I can do to acknowledge it’s outof-the-world taste. Apart from satisfying our ‘fishy’ (pun intended) appetite-- from king prawns, Rohu to Hilsa, we gorged on biryani, which is different - far tastier from the one that we have n Kolkata. A brief tour around the city---namely the schools, the temples and a sweet shop called Indramohan, which has been in the business since the British Raj, left us craving for more. I have always loved sweets, but never in my life have I exceeded three sweets in one go. But this time I did, I had 10 rasagullas in a go. Don’t know if that can be credited to Indramohan solely or my state of mind. I was happy, happy to be amongst people, food and greenery---happy to savour the simple things of life. Afterall, Bangladesh with its abject poverty scores the highest in the happiness index .And as far as the connect with people goes, when has a strip of land been able to

Four days, four hours away By Shrutika Nagpal

Tip In Point

Lansdowne is one of the quietest hill stations of India and has been popular since the Britishers inhabited our country. Lansdowne is unlike other hill stations as it is well connected with motorable roads but is still remote in its own way. As of now, it remains uncluttered and untainted by urbanisation and we can only hope it stays that way for at least a couple of years. Lansdowne got its name from Lord Lansdowne, who was the Viceroy of India during the period of 1888 to 1894. Presently, Lansdowne houses the command office of the Garhwal Rifles Division of the Indian Army. It is situated at an altitude of 1700 meters above sea level and is surrounded by thick oak and blue pine forests in the Pauri Garhwal district of the Uttarakhand state. Even though it was just a couple of months ago that I visited, a quick Google search shows me how much has changed in such a short period of time. At the time, there were only about four or five hotels in prominence and my family and I, after making a couple of calls, realised that the availability of hotel rooms wouldn’t be a problem even if we reached there and checked it out for ourselves. Now, however, it seems there is a well defined peak season when availability might be an issue. As for the right time to visit however,

The trip to Lansdowne was perfect for activity relaxation, history comfort and change Lansdowne still serves as an annual treat. The drive to Lansdowne was a succinct ride, a welcome surprise for those who are used to sleeping for hours on end in the back of a car as it traverses through the discomfort of the hills and god forsaken towns on the way. In a little under five hours, we drove straight onto the Kotdwar Pauri Road and I could literally

smell the difference in the air. The hills were all around us and the weather was calmingly pure. I knew I’d left the city behind in one breath. The cool breeze gave us slight goose bumps but the beauty all around was so unflinchingly perfect that I didn’t know what exactly my body was reacting to. As soon as the Army controlled area began, the change became even more pronounced. The roads became cleaner, the signage improved, the trees looked more evenly planted and the people on the streets were all in uniform. The first hotel we stayed at was Blue Pine Resort. When we walked in we were expecting it to be a continuation of the outside but we were quite disappointed. Though we stayed there for a whole night, I can safely say that the hotel must be avoided unless all others are booked. For starters, there was no signal on any of the mobile networks any of

my family members were using. We had to go to the reception and request to use their landline just to call home and give an update on our location. The food was average, but we weren’t expecting it to be anything more than hot anyway. The rooms were very regular and if we hadn’t brought our cards, board games and snacks along with us, we may have been driven to frustration before dawn even arrived. The hygiene was below par and we felt safe pouncing on the furniture only after a thorough round of dusting and cleaning. The next morning, armed with grouchy looks and renewed optimism, we dealt with the incompetent staff, paid our dues for the night and headed out, after devouring a breakfast we’d brought with us from home. Our next stop was at the GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited) Tourist Bungalow. There were just a couple of rooms on offer, each of which were separated only by a shared porch and a wall. It was perfect for us since we were five people, but the caretaker at the resort informed us that since some renovation was going on, we may face disturbances during the day. He told us that just a little further down the road was another hotel, also managed by GMVN, which allowed guests to stay in little huts that represented the highest point of the hill station and do some sightseeing as well. Little did we know that it was also a large chunk of heaven on Earth.

We reached the GMVN Tip n Top Huts in less than fifteen minutes and passed the Lansdowne market on the way. The drive up was phenomenal and we kept squeaking about how we must walk these roads once we’d checked in, which is exactly what we did. As promised, the resort had sets of huts for its guests- some of them were bright yellow in colour with green tops, some were shiny and wooden, and some were elevated and looked straight out of a fantasy tale. We took a pair of the first kind that overlooked the mountains and nice little attached garden. We parked our car in the open space where two more cars were parked and walked over to the reception. It was unattended- which was a problem we faced a couple of more times over our tripbut the man who finally did appear was very courteous and immediately sent someone to off load our luggage and checked us in with great haste. The two huts we stayed in were very warm inside, which was a very sudden change from chilly weather outside, and had a double bed, two bed side tables, a shared loo and a small closet, along with ample space for keeping luggage and two electrical points. In other words, we didn’t have any complaints. We sat on the plastic chairs in our little garden and pulled out our individual sources of

entertainment, all the while enjoying the all pervasive peace all around. The signal on our phones was intact so that was an additional bonus. The man from the reception turned up with five cups of tea for us along with some biscuits and a warm attitude that got us all chattering about the nearby army cantonment and the immaculate upkeep of the surrounding areas as a result of that. It was the second day of our trip, and we spent it walking around the property. We found an abandoned Jeep that stood nearby and promptly fetched our cameras and took a couple of pictures with it. By the early evening, we had also walked along the winding roads just outside the gates of the hotel, and journeyed up till a dead end where there was a climbable rock about twenty feet high. We took turns climbing to the top and took a couple of more pictures. After all, what is a holiday without proof? At about seven o clock we filed back to our garden and enjoyed the bonfire the man from the reception had kept ready for us. A couple of hours of shameless consumption of alcohol, snacks and humour later, we retired to our bedrooms for a few hours of comfortable sleep and sweet dreams. The next morning we awoke to an almost unnerving silence and met in the garden for

path from our room to a road that ran along the mountain side, parallel to the hotel, and walked along towards the local attraction called Tip In Top, which was rumoured to be the highest point of the hill station, and the selling point for the GMVN property we were staying at. We stood there for a while, looking in awe at the weather, which had now turned slightly cloudy and then ran back to our rooms as the cloud bursts and thunder broke out! We had just settled in when the rain started pouring down all around. Half an hour later however it had stopped and had instead been replaced by two beautiful rainbows that inspired some great photography and an invigorating jolt of energy.

our morning tea. We ordered some breakfast that consisted of warm and well cooked food. It was nothing too fancy, but eggs with bread and paranthas with butter were enough to hit the spot. We decided we needed to explore the town some more and thus got into the car and drove back the way we came. We walked around the nearby Lansdowne market for a little while. Other than a sufficient supply of everyday items, we found some little knick knacks that we picked up just for fun and took some pictures of fluffy dogs and pink cheeked children who turned up at some corners or the other. Both were too shy to pose for the camera so we had to suffice with untransferable memories. We then drove to a nearby lake called Bhulla Tal which offered the option of boating, a well maintained park replete with soda and chips stands, a bakery shop, and a few cages

with baby rabbits inside. The rabbits kept us busy for a while and we only stopped to go the lake and dip our feet into the water before going back up. The boats did call out to us but we resisted the temptation and instead walked around to discover the Lansdowne branch of Army Public School that sat atop a hill. We were told by some friendly passersby that the school was very active in annual functions and sports events, so we walked away wondering what it would be like to study in the hills. We reached back to our hotel by around seven in the evening and followed the same pattern as the previous night, except this time with a larger bonfire- or at least that’s what it seemed to be because of the larger bottles of everything else! The next morning, the last of our trip, fed and ready, we climbed down the connecting

At lunch time, we headed out to visit nearby churches. We were surprised by how beautiful and culturally sound the churches were. They had well maintained exteriors and inviting interiors. St Johns’ Church is a Roman Catholic Church situated on the Mall Road. It was previously a forest bungalow and was reopened in November of 1980. It is the only Church of Worship in Lansdowne. St Mary’s church, which had fallen into disuse after 1947, had been restored by the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre and offered some very meaningful pre independence photographs and audio visual displays of Regimental history and the role of the Garhwal Troops in our Independence. Last but not least, we headed to the Army part of town, and boy, it one hell of a battle leaving it behind! Our first stop was the Garhwal Rifles Regimental War Memorial, located at the Parade Ground. This war memorial was unveiled in the November of 1923 by Lord Rawlinson of Trent, the then Commander in Chief of India. Nearby was the Darban Singh Regimental Museum which is a motivational hall inaugurated in 1983 and named after Darban Singh Negi. It housed a rare collection of Garhwal Rifles and a motley of friendly officers who were kind enough to give us this entire trivia. We headed back to our hotel for a final night and awoke the next morning only to pay our dues at the uncharacteristically attended reception and leave almost immediately.

The trip to Lansdowne was the perfect combination of activity and relaxation, history and reality, comfort and change from the known. The town was friendly, beautiful and rich in culture and there was an irrepressible aura around the whole place that subtly yet strongly staked its claim to its own land, promising an indelible bond with the spirit of the Garhwalis mixed with evergreen warmth towards outsiders. The 5 Stars of 2014 By Shrutika Nagpal

For anyone who likes to be entertained, the thought of upcoming movies is always an exciting one. From sci fi thrillers to million dollar trilogies to comedies and dramas, 2014 has on offer a delightful assortment of cinematic masterpieces that we can tell are going to be great even before they get here. We’ve put together a list of movies that we think will be worth your attention, conversation and admiration, and we do hope you agree. This list is nowhere near exhaustive so keep your eyes, ears and wallets open to get the full impact of 2014’s Hollywood’s heat waves:

1. Transcendence Background: Transcendence is a 2014 American science fiction thriller that will mark the directorial debut of long-time cinematographer Wally Pfister. It was written by newcomer Jack Paglen and appeared on the 2012 Black List, a list of Hollywood's most anticipated unproduced screenplays. It is set to be released in theaters on April 18, 2014. Synopsis: Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is an artificial intelligence researcher who strives to create a machine that possesses sentience and collective intelligence, with the help of his wife Evelyn Caster (Rebecca Hall) and achieve their goal of Technological Singularity. Extremists who oppose technological advancement target him, but their actions just propel him more forcefully toward his goal. Caster also wants to become part of the new technology, though his wife and his best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany) question the wisdom of this drive. Caster's goal to acquire knowledge becomes one to acquire power, and he seems to be unstoppable. Why we’re so lustful: For starters, Johnny Depp never disappoints. He’s like the reclusive superstar whose every choice is gold and we’re the mouths thirsting for some lustre and sightings. The movie promises Depp being in control and powerful, and I for one cannot wait to follow him blindly. Lastly, the cast includes other biggies like Morgan Freeman, who is known for his deep, soothing voice and his incredible acting ability- from Dr Fox in the Batman trilogy to Ellis Boyd in The Shawshank Redemption to God in Bruce Almighty, and Rebecca

Hall, who was the lovably stubborn Vicky in Vicky Christina Barcelona, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe.

2. Maleficient

Background: Maleficent is an upcoming 2014 fantasy thriller film directed by Robert Stromberg and starring Angelina Jolie as the title character. The story focuses on the Sleeping Beauty story, but from the perspective of the villainous Maleficent. It is scheduled for release on May 30, 2014. Maleficent will be released in 3D and is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg, from a screenplay written by Linda Woolverton.

TLF Magazine January, 2014

Synopsis: A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom – and perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well.

Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way, Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell)- a competition that could change Panem forever.

Why we’re hoping to be the first ones to see it: Two words: Angelina Jolie. Not only is she the most spectacular looking woman in the world, with her inexplicably attractive face and sensuous body, she has done some of the wildest, most talked about roles in the history of Hollywood, from Gia, to Lisa Rowe in Girl Interrupted, to Lara Croft to Mrs Smith in Mr and Mrs Smith and a slew of other block buster roles that have been not only critically appreciated for their versatility and depth but also because of the large amounts of revenue they earn for everyone involved. Her co star, Elle Fanning, starred in her breakout role in 2011 as Alice Dainard in J. J. Abrams' scifi-drama blockbuster, Super 8. For this role she received overwhelming critical acclaim and was often cited as one of the film's best aspects. Put them both together and we might just get a sweet fruit as a result of a garden of wisdom being shared between mentor and mentee.

Why we’re searching every movie database with our mouths open: Though Hollywood has a bad habit of making its sequels slightly insulting to the first film in a series, The Hunger Games film series managed to avoid that stigma and delivered two blockbuster hits in two years, both of which broke box office records and gave us young stars like Jennifer Lawrence who

3. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Background: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is an upcoming 2014 science fiction adventure film directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Danny Strong and Peter Craig. It is the first of two cinematic parts based on the novel Mockingjay, the final book in The Hunger Games trilogy, written by Suzanne Collins, and the third installment in The Hunger Games film series. It is follows the first film in the series, The Hunger Games (which set records for opening day at $67.3 million and had the biggest opening weekend for a nonsequel film) and the second film in the series, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (which set the record for biggest opening weekend ever in the month of November and the sixthlargest opening of any film in North America at the time, with a total of $158.1 million). Synopsis: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins at Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger games along with fellow tribute

TLF Magazine January, 2014

39 have started a nationwide fan club just on the crutches of her wit, charm and talent. The last two films were visually and artistically superb, and gave critics very little to complain about. The popularity of The Hunger Games can be adequately explained by its engaging action, its peculiar protagonist, and its scarcity of romance, all of which come together to make not only one of the best read for teenagers in all of time, but a thrilling visual sequence for all those who enjoy films that leave just as much open for interpretation as they do for cinematic swallowing.

4. 22 Jump Street

Background: 22 Jump Street is an upcoming American comedy film produced by and starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum,

scripted by Michael Bacall and Oren Uziel, from a story by Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall, and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. It is the sequel to 2012's 21 Jump Street, based on the 1987 television series of the same name by Stephen J. Cannell and Patrick Hasburgh. The film is scheduled to be released on June 13, 2014, by Columbia Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Plot: After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don't have to just crack the case - they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them. Why we can’t wait to be in a fit of giggles: Who is Jonah Hill, you ask? Well, he’s best known for his roles in Superbad (2007), Knocked Up (2007), Funny People (2009), Get Him to the Greek (2010), Moneyball (2011), 21 Jump Street (2012), and This Is the End (2013), as well as for his voice role in How to Train Your Dragon (2010). Channing Tatum is almost as delicious to laugh with as he is to drool over when he’s shirtless so that’s just a tight little cherry on top. Who would have thought that a seemingly by-thenumbers remake of an 80s TV show would turn out to be one of the funniest films of 2012? Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs) clearly had a great time making this high school comedy thriller, and Channing Tatum showed off his knack for comic timing alongside Jonah Hill in an improv-heavy, good-natured hit. Can the same team of actors and filmmakers pull off the same trick twice with next year's sequel? I certainly hope so.

5. The Monuments Men

Background: The Monuments Men is an upcoming American comedy-drama film directed by George Clooney, written and

produced by Clooney and Grant Heslov, and starring Matt Damon, Clooney, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blanchett. Based on the book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel, the film will concern the story of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program, an Allied group, tasked with saving pieces of art and other culturally important items before their destruction by Hitler during World War II. The film was originally set to be released on December 18, 2013. A trailer was released on August 8, 2013. On October 24, 2013, it was announced that the film would be released on February 7, 2014 at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. Plot: Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as

TLF Magazine January, 2014

the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 - possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements. Why we’re blushing at the thought of the imminent stimulation: Have you seen the cast? Matt Damon, Clooney, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blanchett- unless you’re asexual or retarded, every bone in your body is excited to see just how bright this group of stars is going to shine when they come together for this upcoming movie. The story line deals with the Holocaust- a concept that every generation post the actual event has been irrevocably addicted to knowing more about, either because we still can’t believe it happened, or don’t want to let ourselves forget. Lastly, the combination of comedy and drama is always a welcome genre for all those who like to have something to think about and laugh at, all at the same time.

November

Snowfall in Suisse By Sonali Shah

Zürihorn with snow

Skiing, ice-skating, icy river-rafting and hot, hot fondue - the adventurous November looks like Switzerland’s most favoured month For everyone who has seen Yash Chopra’s films will know that Switzerland is one of the most visually appealing countries in the world. In winters though, the thick blanket of snow adds its special magic to the country’s stunning landscapes, proving that there’s no better time to visit Switzerland than in November. We pick three best destinations from the country, where you can make the most of the snowfall and indulge in adventurous activities. But before you begin to protest about how you’re clumsy in snow, rest assured that most activities are safe for beginners, and the intensity level can go up or down, depending on your comfort.

Zurich

Zurich is rumoured to be a big, typical city, but surrounding all the tall buildings is natural beauty - the cityscape is extremely pretty, with cobbled streets, towering church spires and lush parks. The city’s spotlight in November is cast on the Christmas markets, held across various spots. One of Europe’s largest indoor Christmas markets is held at Zurich’s main train station and the most popular one is in the Old Town. Several festively decorated market huts present a great opportunity for shopping and the gigantic Christmas tree inside the

train station makes for a great photo-op. Stroll around as the fragrant aromas of cinnamon and mulled wine work to draw you in to one of the chalets for dinner. To escape the cold rain, which has a habit of frequenting Zurich, look for the steamy Turkish Hamam at Münstergasse, close to the Old Town. Set off on a cruise on Lake Zurich on the Fondue Ship or just sit by one of the benches on the snowy banks of the lake for an unbelievable view. Fondue can also be enjoyed on the Fondue Tram that snakes around the city in the evenings.

Interlaken

Interlaken is verily, a tale of two cities. A winter in Interlaken is one of the best places in Europe to engage in outdoor winter sports, and the village is a great spot for skiing and snowboarding. If you relish a challenge though, try snowboarding – it’s a bit more difficult for learners. If relentless falling over dampens your mood, the views of the Alps will surely cheer you up. If you want to see as much of the region as possible but don’t want to spend too much time on public transport, consider renting eco-bikes for a day of sightseeing in and around the region

of Interlaken. Paragliding off grassy cliffs into the crisp winter air is also a great idea, affording views of the village and the rivers from the sky. You will typically land in the huge park where there’s a Yash Choprasigned plaque, announcing him as the Ambassador of Interlaken! If you’re not the outdoorsy type, go to Interlaken for the beauty of surrounding mountains and lakes. The lakes Thun and Brienze and the two main ones here. The village of Thun is decorated like a Christmas card in winters, with lights hanging off every store and across every street in the shapes of stars and snowflakes. Interlaken is one best spots in Switzerland to ski, snowboard, night sled, bungy jump, sky dive, and dog sled, but there’s also always the option of lounging in a heated indoor pool.

Zermatt

Zermatt is one place where urban folk would definitely love to go on a holiday – the whole village is a car-free zone! With the exception of a few electric taxis and buses, there are absolutely no cars allowed into the region, making it probably the freshest air you would breath in. It’s a typical Swiss mountain village, with quaint timber houses, and forms your base to go up to Gornergrat and Matterhorn glacier paradise. From these peaks, you can enjoy stark views of the Matterhorn, the mountain which is extremely dangerous and difficult to scale.

Zermatt, a few hours into the season's first snowfall

Thanks to Zermatt’s location, between three mountains, it’s blessed with nature’s best and is the ultimate destination for snow related adventurous activities – especially, skiing and snowboarding. It’s also the highest located skiing region, and hence, has the best snowclad slopes. It’s also from Zermatt, that you can cross the border over to Italy, while skiing! Snow-biking,tobogganing, snowshoetrekking and taking a hike down a soft, snowy trail are just a few activities for you to begin the fun snow adventure with. You can also rent a pair of ice-skates and take advantage of the public ice rink, where everyone is welcome.

The city’s spotlight in November is cast on the Christmas markets, held across various spots

Info box Getting there: Most other airlines reach Switzerland via a stopover in the Middle East, except Swiss, which flies non-stop. Accommodation: Youth Hostels in Switzerland are different than most hostels found in Europe, and are immaculately maintained, more like a hotel. From the Youth Hostel in Zermatt, the closest ski bus stop is less than a 5-min walk away, which is a boon when you have your skiing gear on. The one in Interlaken is a 2-min walk from the train station. The one in Zermatt though, is located a bus/tram ride away from the main areas of the city. Whose Couch is it Anyway? By Swati Sharma

TLF brings you the definitive guide to couch surfing, the dos and don’ts of this trend taking a toll on travellers worldwide. Picture this. You make a travel plan which is on a string budget. You exchange a number of mails with someone in your destination; look at pictures of his couch, his home and then make a decision. You arrive at the destination and head out for his place to stay. Question this. Do you know enough to stay there? Tricky, but important question, and 7 million members in 100,000 cities across the world, travellers of Couchsurfing.org do just that and vouch for it too. So much so that the trend that has been not only a hit in the US and UK but is now establishing grounds in Jordan, Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan too.

Building great momentum in metropolitans in India, it is very easy to find a host but not necessarily a good one TLF Magazine January, 2014

India too is not far behind in joining hands with this hospitality revolution and is becoming a favourite with the budget travellers. Not only has it become a way to save money but also meeting like minded people and share each other’s stories and passion for travel. Building great momentum in metropolitans in India, it is very easy to find a host but not necessarily a good one, of which most are males. Needless to say, independent women travelers get discouraged to avail the services. Adaptability is an essential traveller quality

and the best way to understand a place and its culture is through the people and staying with them. However, travellers all over the world, seasoned or amateurs need to be absolutely sure what exactly they are getting into when they opt for the “free” couch surfing experience. Frankly, just like any other social media portals the tendency to attract people is a mix of good and bad ones. So many websites relating to the trend and particularly the trend setters have left no loop holes, be it their policy, community guidelines or safety features. But considering both sides of the coin, there should be no room for confusion and that’s where we come in, to tighten the nuts and bolts.

Here is a list of essential Do’s and Don’ts Do’s ● Do your homework right: Be thorough in all the information you can extract from the host, full profile, photos and

recommendations from the past guests. Anyone who messages you without photos or tampered information, smell the fish! ● Verification: Location verification is utmost important, also verify the profile and the safety features and references. ● Leave no ambiguity: Make sure to provide enough information about yourself and your expectations from the visit, it has to be frank. ● Start in advance: Start searching for hosts at least two weeks in advance, to give yourself and the host to have enough time for the decision. ● Trust your instinct: Staying with a stranger is a big risk, make sure to exchange enough mails, video chatting is even better. Couchsurfing completely relies on trust. ● Use your common sense: If you are a single woman traveller, staying with a

45 family or another woman is common sense, however double check everything. ● Be a good surfer: Offer to cook, clean your mess, take gifts for them, help with the chores, show photographs and of course make friends. ● Thank Yous and Smiles: Be a good guest, say enough thank you and give more smiles. Remember, someone is letting you into his own space and you must respect that.

Don’ts ● Don’t hesitate in asking for tips: Brainstorm people that you know, or have met, that use CouchSurfing. Make sure you come up with a list of people who you know or have met in prior travels. ● Don’t Go Looking for a Date or getting laid: A lot of people have a misconception of couch surfing as couch sharing too, but it is best to just let it be at couch surfing. ● Don’t steal anything or misbehave: Stealing from your host is the worst, not only will it leave a bad impression on the host but you will be reviewed on the platform in very bad light. ● Don’t host close minded people: Couch surfing is more of interacting with like minded travelers, make sure beforehand your guest and you have some things in common. ● Overstay your welcome: Confirm the dates of your stay and in case you are gelling really well with your host , make sure to ask them if you can stay longer. Do not pile on. ● Don’t just sleep and run: People who accept couch surfers want to share their culture with you, and to learn about yours. Make sure you spend time with your hosts to make it worth their while. ● Make sure to observe the house rules: As a guest living for free please make sure to cross no boundaries in the household, understand its rules. Don’t come too late, ask before inviting any guests and keep the place clean or cook a meal for them. Other alternatives: Hospitality Club, Tripping, Be welcome and Global Freeloaders and Air B&B (not free, but cheaper than hostels and hotels.

All set to soar! Leisure + Living

By Vastavikta Tokas

They have just started their innings in the Hindi film industry. Like the rest, they too couldn't escape the Bollywood bug. They have not had a sensational debut, but they are definitely the most promising of the lot to look out for. We catch up with Taaha Shah, Sunny Leone and Siddhant Kapoor about love, life, career and travel. Read on.. With his undeniable sex appeal and charisma, Taaha Shah, made his debut in Luv ka the end produced under the Yash Raj Films youth banner – Yfilms, and since then, has never looked back. After his role of a dream boy in Dharma production’s Gippi, the dark horse has made a mark in tinseltown. Taaha talks to TLF about his coming movies, travel desires and plans for 2014. Was becoming an actor always an option? How did it happen? Being an actor was a dream I used to put myself to sleep with. It was hardly an option. I’m from a family of business people, engineers and doctors. I too was headed down the same path. Business was what I thought I had to pursue, so, I joined BBA in university. But, after experiencing that for two to three years I realised it was not for me. I felt happier being on the sets of my modeling shoots, which were something I got once in a blue moon. After the financial crisis in 2008 I decided business is not my cup of tea and I joined New York Film Academy. Now I’m living my dream. Tell us about your debut film. How was the experience? Luv Ka The End was an unforgettable experience. Being under YRF - the biggest banner in Asia, was nothing short of a dream come true. Every moment of involvement help me grow as a person and it will always be the foundation of my acting career. What are the things/projects you are looking forward to in 2014? I’m currently shooting a film titled Tina and Lolo. It’s an action thriller, and some other projects which I am thinking over, so, am unable to talk about them yet. I’ve really been looking forward to doing an action film and finally I’m getting to do one. Which is your favourite travel destination? I’ve not travelled as much to have chosen my favourite destination. But I’ve got a list such as Finland, Rome, Australia even Shanghai.

What will we find in Taaha Shah's travel satchel ? You are bound to find a lot of stuff. It depends on the duration of the travel plan. I normally take all my care products, such as moroccan oil and Johnson baby shampoo, body oil and moisturizer, etc. I never forget my laptop. I make sure all my medicines and certain eatables are present. I am actually quiet OCD like that. Since your childhood you’ve switched schools and businesses in different countries. How has this affected your personality ? It has made me adaptable and more accustomed to change, given me the courage to believe that no matter where, I will survive. It has also given me a vast experience of meeting, interacting and bonding with multicultural people. Business has taught me life skills such as listening and being a solution based thinker. It has taught me that, money is something that comes hard but goes easy. Due to all the changes and switching around I am the person I am today. One Indian city you would like to see on the culinary map? Why? I’m not a foody myself. But , I am quite fond of South Indian delicacies and so South India can be an option. One country you want to visit in 2014. Australia. I have a couple of friends there now and I know I will be having a brilliant time with them. It’s in the end of the world and that in itself is an attractive feature of that continent. The most romantic destination. Well personally, the most romantic place would be space. But since that isn’t feasible Switzerland tops the list. Which is your favourite party stop? Dubai is party hub. But, I love Mumbai too. I would love to experience parties in Vegas and also in Japan.
